Abilene Wildcats’ Tyler Francis broke his personal 400 metres record on the second and final day of the 13th annual THA/Blink B Mobile Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, yesterday, taking gold in the event with a 47.80 seconds finish.

Francis, whose previous record stood at 47.88 dominated the event, leaving World 4m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon of Memphis Pioneers for a second placed finish. Gordon scraped into the final, finishing eighth overall. Behind Gordon (48.22) was Grenada’s Kemoy Henry (48.49). A day prior, Gordon also finished runner-up, but in his specialised 400m hurdles event.

In the Men’s 100m dash, Guyana’s Adam Harris (+1.3) placed first ahead of 17-year-old local Jonathan Farinha of Abilene Wildcats. Meanwhile, doing the double was T&T and Simplex athlete Kamaria Durant took a wind assisted gold in the 100m dash beating Alexis Love (11.82) of the USA and Point Fortin’s Aaliyah Telesford (11.92). It was Durant’s second win at the two-day event, following her 200m triumph on the first day.

Among the stand-out performers of the day was 14-year-old javelin thrower, Tyriq Horsford of Zenith, who dominated the Under-18 event, after throwing 62.21m in his best attempt, almost eight metres ahead of his nearest challenger and club mate, Vandel Joseph (54.47).

In the 1,500m event, Nichola Landeau or Air Bon Sonics, who finished runner-up in the 800m, took the more gruelling 1500m in 3:57.69, less than a second ahead of Cleveland Thomas from Guayana and T&T Defence Force’s Kendis Bullard.

Memphis dominates 2nd day of Falcon Games

Memphis Pioneers athletic club had a dominant day on Day 2 of the 13th annual Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on Sunday. Jeminise Parris would start the ball rolling when she emerged a comfortably winner of the Girl’s U-18 100-metre hurdles from Anya Akili of Zenith and Toco Titans’ Kermisha Serapio. Parris took command from the second hurdle and pulled away smoothly to win in 13.88 seconds. Akili returned a time of 14.91 and Serapio, 14.92.

Memphis also produced the winner of the Boy’s U-20 110-metre hurdles event as Rueben Walters delivered a stirring run in deep-stretch to stop the clock at 13.66 seconds. Aaron Lewis had to settle for silver in 14.01 and Christian Hood-Boyce, also of Memphis, third in 14.83.

Young Jesse Frederick kept the Memphis flag flying when he took control of the Boy’s U-18 400-metre event from the halfway stage to run out an easy winner in 50.36 seconds. Cougars’ David George took silver in 51.40 with bronze going to Jeremiah Hamilton of Mayaro in 51.44.

Memphis continued to dominate the one-lap events when Brandon Parris made a move 100 metres into the race and was never challenged in the Boy’s U-20 400-metres. Parris romped home in 48.04 seconds with the Abilene Wildcats pair of Ohdel James and Edwin Phillips second and third in 48.77 and 49.48, respectively.

And the youthful pair of Keone John and Travis Lewis would earn silver and bronze, respectively, in the Boy’s U-10 100m timed final . Cougars’ Kyrell Thomas bagged gold in 14.38 seconds. John clocked 14.44 and Lewis, 14.45.

Memphis also captured the Boy’s U-18 4 x 400m relay in three minutes, 33.77 seconds. Dovers took silver in 3:40.39 and Petrotrin Palo Seco, bronze, in 3:40.66.

In the Girl’s mixed U-16 4 x 400m relay, they had to settle for silver as Cougars secured gold in three minutes, 44.72 seconds. Memphis returned 3:50.00 and bronze went to Petrotrin Palo Seco in 3:50.17.

Away from the track, the club also earned precious metal as Clement Campbell disturbed the sand at 5.95 metres for silver in the Boy’s U-16 long jump. Gold went to Air Bon Sonics’ Josiah Edwards, who produced a best effort of 6.09m and while his clubmate Matthew Graham produced a 5.68m effort for bronze.

In other field events contested, Codrington Elite’s Nicholas Gordon captured the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.93 metres. He established the winning mark with his first attempt and after failing to improve on it with his next two attempts he opted to pass on his final three jumps. Gordon’s clubmate Carl Morgan took silver with a distance of 7.35m with Warriors’ Dwight Herbert collecting bronze with a best effort of 6.91m.

And national shot put record holder Akeem Stewart duly won his pet event. The Tobago Falcons athlete threw the ball 17.11 metres for gold with the Rebirth pair of Hezekiel Romeo and Quincy Wilson earning silver and bronze with throws of 16.96 and 16.23, respectively.

In some field event finals contested during the morning session, Safiya John of Zenith won the Girl’s U-14 high jump when she cleared the bar 1.45 metres on her second attempt. Point Fortin’s Antonia Sealy took silver with her best clearance of 1.38m and Ayeolah John of Petrotrin Palo Seco cleared 1.35m for bronze.

Gold in the Boy’s U-18 discus went to Isaiah Greaves. The D’Abadie athlete registered his best effort of 38.52 metres on his fourth throw while Striders’ Daniel Nish, 38.43m, and Nkosi James of Tobago Falcons, 34.45m, took silver and bronze, respectively.

I am not sure if the Memphis Pioneers athletes Jeminise Parris (Girl’s U-18 100-metre hurdles) and Brandon Parris (Boy’s U-20 400-metres) are related but they both seems to be very bright and talented prospects for the future so I hope they are in good hands and I think we should keep an eye out for them to do well at senior level if they both keep improving.
I just did some checking up on Brandon Parris and apparently he is a Vincy who has been living and training in T&T so may be he is not related to Jeminise Parris but they have the same surname by coincidence.

Carifta athletes impress at 13th Falcon Games

Several of T&T’s Carifta Games hopefuls rounded into form ahead of next week’s Carifta Games in Martinique with personal best performances.

Reigning two-time Carifta gold medallist Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons) signalled she is ready for the region’s premier meet for young athletes with a personal best throw in the girls under-18 shot put and discus events.

On the first day of the 13th annual THA/Blink B Mobile Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Saturday, James improved her mark in the shot to 15.38 metres. Her previous best of 15.19 was recorded in a gold medal performance at the Secondary Schools Championships on March 18.

James, 16, returned to attain a new standard in the discus with a distance of 41.61 metres eclipsing the 40.24 achieved in winning the Tobago Schools title on February 12.

The Signal Hill Secondary School fifth former won the girls under-17 shot put titles at the 2012 and 2013 Carifta Games improving the record on each occasion and will be going for more gold in Maritnique.

Akidah Briggs (Toco Titans) produced her best mark ever in the girls under-18 javelin, winning with 38.86, (5cm) better than her previous best achieved at the Carifta trials on March 16.

Asha James (Zenith) took the runner up spot (35.61m). Briggs won bronze in the Carifta girls under-17 event in 2011 and silver in 2012. Both are TTO’s representatives in the event in Martinique. Briggs was also second on James in the shot put (14.18).

Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) improved his mark in the boys under-18 javelin with a third round effort of 62.21 to take the top spot. Horsford’ four legal efforts (56.63, 59.29, 62.21 and 57.40) were better than his club-mate Vondel Joseph who was second with 54.47.

Defending boys under-20 5000 metres champion Akeem Marshall (Toco Titans) lowered his pb to 15:52.67 when he finished second in the men’s run which took the field 12 and half times over the 400 metres track. Matthew Hagley (TTDF) took the top spot (15:48.65).

Akanni Hislop (Zenith) sped a new personal record in the boys under -18 100 metres sprint getting to the line in 10.76 (+0.1) with Carifta team-mate Joash Huggins (Dovers) in second (11.09).

In the heats Hislop was even quicker stopping the clock at 10.73(+2.8 ). World Junior and Youth semifinalist Reubin Walters equalled his pb in winning the boys under -20 110m hurdles.

The Memphis Pioneers cleared the ten barriers in 13.66 metres to match the mark he established in winning bronze at last year’s Carifta Games in the Bahamas. Aaron Lewis (Zenith) was second, also in a pb of 14.01. Walters and Lewis will represent TTO in boys under-20 110m and 400 hurdles in Martinique.

Another Memphis athlete Jeminise Parris took the girls under-18 100m hurdles in 13.88 seconds to match the personal best clocking she did at the Carifta trials on March 15.

On the first day the St Francois Girls College student secured the 400m hurdles and will seeking a similar double in Martinique.

Akoya Cummings (Neon Trackers) produced a strong finish to take the women’s 400m in a pb of 55.86 passing the American duo of Najah Floyd (56.00) and Chana Powel-Vinson (56.17) in the last 80m.

Defending Carifta boys under 20 400m Machel Cedenio (Simplex) skipped the meet while boys under 20 javelin hopeful Shaquille Waithe (Rebirth) is currently training in Cuba with Olympic men’s javelin champion Keshorn Walcott.

Fourteen-year-old sprint wonder Adell Colthrust (Southern Athletics) did not compete in an individual event.

Trinidad and Tobago will be represented by 68 athletes at this year's Carifta Games. The team will have its final meeting on Tuesday April 15 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 8am before heading out to Martinique on Thursday April 17.

The Carifta Games begin on Friday April 18 with the Opening Ceremony to be followed by three days of action from Saturday April 19 to Monday April 21.

The national contingent will be seeking to improve on its 20 medal haul at the 2013 edition in the Bahamas and better the record 40 medals won at the 2010 Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands.

Thanks for posting these races. The U-10 races are hilarious. At the start of a race, ah lil move from about lane 2 to lane 4. But it so nice to see the lil ones getting to run at the HCS. I like the enthusiam. A couple things. Why is a white chair near the track. Why does sand from the long jump pit always on the track. Can the have someone with a brom sweep it up? But 3 cheers for the meet.

Thanks for posting these races. The U-10 races are hilarious. At the start of a race, ah lil move from about lane 2 to lane 4. But it so nice to see the lil ones getting to run at the HCS. Yeah good points. The chair and the sand on the track apart from looking unprofessional could also be a danger to the performing athletes on the track. Lets hope they deal with things like that in the future. Professionalism and attention to detail matters if we also want our athletes to have a professional attitude and so always perform at their full potential.

REVIEW OF 2014 FALCON GAMES

Falcon Games owe big thanks to the athletes

The 13th annual Falcon Games have come to an end. I have been involved in the Games since its inception and have seen the two day meet grow to become a ‘teenager.’ My role was initially as an athlete who was suppose to compete but never could because I was a member of the Games’ organization. My relationship then evolved to that of a journalist. Quite naturally the highlight for me this year would be the provision of wireless internet service. I must commend the organizers as Falcon Games is one of the few meets (if not the only one) where internet has been provided for media.

Some of the positives are of course seeing children engage in positive, uplifting and healthy activities. However, some challenges continue to persist that are not unique to the Falcon Games but to track and field in general. I want to specially thank the athletes because without them the Hasely Crawford Stadium would have been EMPTY, EMPTY, EMPTY, a problem that track meets have been suffering from. As a journalist I did not receive a media invitation. I didn’t see many of my media colleagues at the Games and after doing enquiries I got reports that they did not receive a release or call or email from the organizers.

The Falcon Games are staged the week the before the annual Carifta Games and usually coincide with the closure of schools for the Easter vacation and yet the turn out was poor. I was waiting to get an email or release from the NAAA announcing that the Carifta team would be competing. But knowing the NAAA as I think I do the Falcon Games have nothing to do with them. Their interest is in NAAA events. I want to ask Mr. Serrette and this team, isn’t all of track and field their business? How hard it is to send out a release informing the media and the public of the event? National bodies of other sports do so when individual clubs and entities have their separate meet or tournament as what ever goes on in the sport fall under the national association. But wait, I almost forgot. When Trevor James was the Public Relations Officer, his meet, the Quantum Classic, was well advertised and promoted on the NAAA website.

I know I may be bias as I have been involved in the Games from the inception and I am Tobagonian. With that in mind I have made the point to Falcon Games director Durly Lucas some time ago that my loyalty lies in track and field and not in promotion on Falcons meet ahead of another. Yes I am committed to pushing any and everything Tobago but I think it would be selfish of me to want the best for Falcon Games and neglect other meets. Where am I going with this argument? Much more has to be done to lift the image and market the sport of track and field. What ever is being done now is either not effective or not enough.

The poor media turnout at the Falcon Games came as no surprise to me as the NAAA has developed a love for giving little regard or courtesy to the journalists. From the Development Meets in January little has been done to inform of upcoming meets. Results were made available three to four days after. When the results were posted on the association's website, reporters were suppose to know that. Then they had to decipher the results and get a story. Going to the meet was another issue as rarely would you get a greeting, farless a bottle of water.

The re-incarnated Public Relations Officer Peter Samuel started this leg of tenure quite well. He has been providing updates on Facebook and sending out emails. However, reports I have received are that when calls are made to him he rarely has answers nor can point reporters to where they can get info. Samuel and his NAAA colleagues seem to hold the view that reporters must show up when invited and when they are late or absent what they miss is their business. So all through the season precious little was done to woo reporters not recognizing that sports journalists have way more sports to cover than track and field. Some sports bodies have recognize the importance of coverage to their sports and spare no thought to keep the attention of the media and ensure their sport receive as must media play as is possible. The Swimming association is one example even though their officials work for free. Then you have the Triathlon association.

Mr. Serrette and his administration have talked about improving relations to the media. (Well they used to talk it because I don’t hear that talk anymore). It is time to get into action. The sport of track and field has been producing Olympic and World Champions. If the local body does not promote its athletes and achievements who else would?

This year’s Carifta Games in Martinique are upon us. I must commend Mr. Samuel on featuring the athletes and the coaches. Great start. Keep it up. I want to ask Samuel and the association if reports, updates or schedule of events will be provided to the media and to the public during the games. I mean you guys usually walk with a photographer and yet pictures appear only in one newspaper. I want to suggest to Mr. Samuel that he does not have to be in Martinique to provide updates and coverage of the meet. I am sure he is aware of the internet with facebook, twitter and email. There is the traditional mean of phone where calls and text message can be exchanged.

I am praying and continue to be optimistic that the profile of track and field will rise in T&T whether the NAAA wants that or not. The sport is bigger than any one of us.

By the way, let me apologize to Mr. Samuel as I somehow disrespected his high office. My sincerest apology. I will not let it happen again.
