‘Bomber’ memorial tomorrow
T&T Guardian
The annual Richard “Bomber” Theodore memorial football will take place tomorrow at the Carenage Recreation Ground, Haig Street, Carenage from 4.30 pm. The day’s highlight will be a match between Defence Force Masters and a Richard Theodore XI led by his former national and Defence Force team-mate, Angus Eve. Among the players expected to participate are his former co-workers and national team-mates in Stephen James, Kerry Jamerson, Hutson Charles, Dexter Lee, Dexter Francis, Ross Russell, Anthony Rougier, Angus Eve, Dean Pacheco, Michael Mc Comie, Roger Henry, Kelvin Jones, Reynold Carrington and a few other guest players headed by St Lucian, Earl Jean.
A former standout national defender for both country and Defence Force, Theodore died at the age of 32 after a short illness in 2004. He was a member of the national team who created history in 1991 by qualifying for the Fifa Youth World Cup in Portugal, before a head injury ended his career prematurely in 1998. He suffered the injury when he fell from a tree near his home in Carenage during the St Peter’s Day celebrations and underwent emergency surgery to repair damage to his head and brain. Doctors fitted his skull with a plastic plate and he was later able to resume running and walking without any assistance. He then resumed full duties with the military nearly two years ago, until his untimely death.
