Mark Clattenburg accused of racial slur during Chelsea v Manchester United

Chelsea have made a formal complaint to the football authorities about the referee Mark Clattenburg, whose handling of their 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United caused such controversy, alleging that he directed "inappropriate language" towards two of their players, with club officials briefing that one part of the allegation concerns language of a racist nature.

The west London club released a statement at eight o'clock, which brought a fresh twist to a tumultuous day. They did not reveal the identity of the players, although one of them is understood to have been the Nigeria international Mikel John Obi, a player that Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, felt had been lucky to avoid a red card from Clattenburg, in a game in which two Chelsea players, Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres, did receive them.

Roberto Di Matteo, the Chelsea manager, was furious at Clattenburg's decisions, in particular the one to give Torres a second yellow card for diving while the assistant referee allowed Javier Hernández's winning goal to stand, despite him having come back from an offside position. Di Matteo went to see Clattenburg after the match, flanked by some of his backroom staff, and he was aware at the time of the grievances of his players. Mikel is understood to have visited Clattenburg in his room.

"We have a lodged a complaint to the Premier League match delegate with regards to inappropriate language used by the referee and directed at two of our players in two separate incidents during today's match," said a Chelsea spokesman. "The match delegate will pass the complaint to the Football Association. We will make no further comment at this time."

Clattenburg was not reachable for comment after Chelsea's allegations but a statement from Professional Game Match Officials said it "is aware of the allegations and they are being treated with the utmost seriousness. Mark will co-operate fully and welcomes the opportunity for the facts to be established. No further comment will be made until matter has been properly investigated."

It is understood that the other Chelsea player who felt he was the victim of offensive language from Clattenburg was white and, therefore, it was assumed that there was no racial connotation to this flashpoint. But there was in the other one with Mikel and Chelsea are fully aware of the severity of the allegation, particularly in the wake of the John Terry-Anton Ferdinand racist slur saga.

Terry did not play here, as he served the second part of his four-match domestic ban from the FA for the racist abuse of Ferdinand, the QPR defender, but Rio Ferdinand did play for United. He was the subject of cat-calls, his every touch booed and, after Hernández's winner, he struck a defiant celebratory pose that appeared to enrage the crowd, leading to missiles being thrown.

This was after Chelsea had chosen to support the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign and Terry mentioned his club's "pride" at backing the campaign in his programme notes. Terry wore an anti-racism badge for the day. All of the Chelsea players wore Kick It Out T-shirts in the warm-up; the United winger, Ashley Young, was the only player who did not. It was unclear whether he was making a statement. There were ironic cheers from the United supporters when the on-pitch announcer read out the anti-discrimination message and, over 90 frenetic minutes, there was also rancour between the benches, Ferguson clashing with Di Matteo and members of the Chelsea staff after Torres's red card and at full-time.

Rio Ferdinand shook hands beforehand with Ashley Cole, who had given evidence in support of Terry at the Chelsea captain's magistrates court trial for abusing Anton. It felt as though a line had attempted to be drawn under one of the modern game's most destructive episodes, only for another controversy to erupt.

Clattenburg was miked up throughout the game and he could be heard by his assistants and the fourth official. Their conversations would not have been recorded but they could, in theory, be in a position to assist any inquiry.

Di Matteo was furious at his post-match press conference, although he focused only on Clattenburg's decisions in relation to the match. "Yes, I have been in to see him," Di Matteo said. "Surely, when he's going to watch the images he's going to realise that he made big mistakes.

"We are massively disappointed that these key decisions were wrong. It always seems to be in favour of the opposition. That's a massive disadvantage for us. I thought at 2-2, we looked like the team that were probably going to win the game. You don't want the referees to be a big influence in the game, you let the two teams play each other and play a good game, that's what everybody loves to watch."

One more thing....all this talk about a steward getting injured by missiles from the stands is not true. Missiles were raining down when Hernandez scored but the stewards weren't even on the field at that point. The stewards were sent out shortly after that (as normal - they usually create a ring around the field about 15 minutes before the end) but one of them slipped and injured himself. Everyone near him seemed pretty bemused.

This is the biggest load of  :bs: ever and shows how low Man United fans will go. Man United supporters can't even admit that the ref was  :bs:

No way Torres dive, you have to be crazy to suggest as much. Chicarito offside was easy, he came into the play from behind. The linesman stay even with one out of two things, the last defender or the ball. So if he was with the ball then he can see where Chicharito was. If he stayed with the last man, then he MUST see Chicharito rejoining the game from an offside position.

So what's the deal?       :bs: :bs: :bs: :bs:

I will admit the ref make a brave call. He have balls of steal.

So basically alyuh Chelsea men saying the ref and linesman get paid off. But to be fair to the linesman, it had no way he could of seen if Hernandez was offside.

How could the linesman NOT have seen hernandez was offside, he was in line with (if not behind) the damned GK. Any more offside and he woulda be a ball boy.

All this happen in less than a second, unless the ref have xray vision and slow motion replay he aint seeing that.

Nah, nah, I doh care about the loss, as much as how it went down. If it was reversed I would have defenitely say we boss run something.  My take is that the FA, pay Terry back for Ferdinand. Look back and is the same thing that happened when Terry and Bridge had they thing and Bridge lined up against Terry. Chelsea went down in similar fashion.

Jed, I talkin' 'bout the linesman and you talkin' 'bout the ref....No matter what you tell me, the fact is, hernandez was always in an offside position once he had gotten himself past the goal line...the linesman who should have been in line with the last defender, should see that and be processing in his mind that Hernandez was ALWAYS offside until he got himself on the opposite side of the last defender and from your first pic, he failed to do that.  The flag should have gone up immediately.  Everything may happen one spit second at a time, but as the play unravels, you are processing things as you see them, too.

From the refs perspective Torres went down after a few steps when looked like defender was going to clear so I can understand why he thought he had dived in real time.

On the Offside it happened so fast and as I have said before its easy with lines on the pitch and stopping the play, however when the 1st shot went in there was a Chelsea player in the goal with the Manu one, the shot then came in very fast the linesman would of had to look where the ball rebounded to, waited for the shot then changed he line of vision, by the time he reacted to that Manu and Chelsea players were out of the goal and he was back onside, the only way he could of give offside if he was watching both positions at the same time, not possible.  The offside is nothing to do with the ref, but it was the wrong decision but nothing like the blatant ones we see week in week out.  Only way to get it right all the time is technology.

Very slippery slope with comments against ref, given what they likely put up with from the players every game.

To be fair to Clattenburg, being fouled by Johnny Evans has always been a bookable offence at Stamford Bridge....Drogba got a kung fu kick to the chest a couple of years ago and collected a yellow card for his troubles....so Torres definitely had to go :beermug:

Wrong, the players off the pitch would not matter. If Chicarito had stayed in the goal and the goal scored then it stands. You cannot use a player out of bounds to make an offside decision call. The lines should have been in line with the defense as soon as the ball cleared.

This call was a very simple call, nothing complicated about it.

Again, that's a cop out, the speed at which it happens and Petr Cech getting in the way. None have to do with the decision. We are talking about the lines man here not the ref. The linesman main function is to adjudicate OFFSIDE.

Where do you think he thought Chicharito came from?

These are the same guys that can average when a 40 yard ball was hit and when the strker breaks the back line.

Your club jumped tru hopes tuh support Terry when he was accused of racially abusing Ferdinand. Even was accused of altering statements by those who presided over the FA hearing. And come down soft on him; now all yuh have the gall tuh complain? Is alright for Terry tuh call a player a f@ckin black c**t right? Yuh still doh see the irony? Maybe the ref was just repeating tuh Mikel and Mata what he thought Mikel and Mata thought he had called them.

Hahaha

Wrong, the players off the pitch would not matter. If Chicarito had stayed in the goal and the goal scored then it stands. You cannot use a player out of bounds to make an offside decision call. The lines should have been in line with the defense as soon as the ball cleared.

This call was a very simple call, nothing complicated about it.

Players off the pitch don't matter only because they are not involved in the play, not because of their positioning.  If him being in the goal (off the pitch) means that he was not offside, then the minute he crossed the goal line back into play he was onside, because there were other Chelsea players on the goal line.

Instead, what Kev said is correct... he WAS in an offside position, but the ass't ref just missed it given how quickly everything went down and how many moving pieces he had to keep up with.

Yeah, because Anton Ferdinand is the only person involved.

So they taking up fire rage for Anton Ferdinand... okay  ::)

Because they have a man found guilty of using racial language at another player as their captain.  Definition of irony if you ask me.

The linesman in the Liverpool game had no excuse and he blew the call... shit happens, move on.

This is not like Rob Stiles giving Malouda a phantom penalty against Liverpool 5 yrs ago that ended up costing us the title... shit happens, move on.

That should keep Mango Chow occupied for a bit...

Ryan is the John Terry of this forum.. ie a total C&*T
