Are coaches killing young athletes by making them specialise on one event so early in their career , As most athletes prefer the glamour event as the 100m , we seem to have a lot of athletes entered in these races and if they not making it they just quit. Not really knowing that they could of been a good 400m or a hurdler or 800m or 1500m . Instead of athletes finding out what distance or race they are good at they just go after the glamour events never really giving the others a try . What you guys think.

If I may chime in with a perspective from a similar sport. Our culture is geared towards sprinting. We know it takes less time. Even though the workout intensity may be three times that of a distance specialist, it seems to be a trade-off that we are more than happy to live with. Added to that the prestige that comes with being a top class sprinter over that of a distance athlete. Sprinting is more glamorous, hence more attractive for the athlete and to a lesser extent the coach. That being said, a responsible coach should always guide young athletes towards the distance side of training (at least in my sport) so as to develop a base for whatever type of athlete he or she may be later on.
Success will never take you by surprise.

I used to train with QRC under Thorne and I find that there are not enough FIELD coaches or clubs for that matter that specialize in that. Through training for field events i found out 800 was my favorite race then javelin 400 hurdles and I will even run a 4X400
