'TORPEDO' READY
Thompson, Burns open 100m 'Worlds' campaign today
Saturday, August 15th 2009

READY TO RUN: Richard Thompson, left, and Marc Burns.

Richard Thompson is where he wants to be, going into today's opening round of the men's 100 metres, at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, here in Berlin, Germany.

The Trinidad and Tobago sprint star captured silver in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He clocked 9.89 seconds, while Jamaican gold medallist Usain Bolt got to the line in a world record 9.69. Bolt's best time this year is 9.79, but he's only second on the 2009 performance list, behind American Tyson Gay (9.77).

Thompson has not dived under ten seconds this season, and is 12th on the world list at 10.01 seconds.

"I haven't done anything so far for the year to give anyone hope that I will be a medallist. All eyes on Bolt, Gay, (Daniel) Bailey, and I sit right where I want to be, like last year, in the underdog position."

Though he has been flying under the radar this season, "Torpedo" Thompson is confident he can rise to the occasion and earn himself a lane in tomorrow's championship race.

"I'm satisfied with my preparations. I have done everything possible to put myself on the line in the final again. I believe that once I'm in the final I stand a very good chance of getting a medal.

"I have not allowed a damp season," he continued, "to affect my physical or mental approach to this meet. I'm faithful God will protect me and get me through this one."

Thompson is scheduled to face the starter at 6.43 this morning (TT time) in the tenth of 12 first round heats at the Olympic Stadium.

Marc Burns will be the first T&T athlete on show at the 2009 World Championships. He competes at 6.15 a.m. in heat six.

A finalist in the 100m at the last two editions of the meet, the 26-year-old sprinter would be hoping for a hat-trick of championship race appearances. His best run this season is 10.04 seconds. The clocking earned Burns third spot at the National Championships, behind Thompson (10.01) and Aaron Armstrong (10.03).

Emmanuel Callender is the third T&T representative in the men's 100m. For the first time in his career, he is appearing in an individual event at a global meet. But Callender will not be out of his depth when he settles into the blocks at 6.29 a.m. in heat number eight. He was part of the T&T sprint relay quartet that earned silver at the Beijing Olympics. And just last month, Callender captured the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championship 100m title in a personal best 10.08 seconds.

Team T&T manager Dexter Voisin expects all three T&T sprinters to perform with distinction here in Berlin.

"Richard is definitely one of the contenders. Marc consistently makes finals, and with less pressure on him this time would be looking for good things. And Callender's the newcomer - he's very hungry."

Bolt will run in heat nine (6.36 a.m. TT time), while Gay, the reigning champion, has been drawn in heat 11 (6.50 a.m.).

T&T's Jehue Gordon makes his World Championship debut today. Just 17, Gordon is the youngest competitor in the men's 400m hurdles. At 2.36 p.m. (TT time), he will do battle in heat three. T&T-born American Kerrron Clement opens the defence of his world title in the same heat, a race that also includes 2004 Olympic champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic and evergreen Jamaican Danny McFarlane.

"This is definitely an experience for Jehue," Voisin told the Express, yesterday. "He'll be looking for a personal best."

Gordon's fastest time over the barriers is 49.45 seconds - just two-hundredths of a second outside the national record.

Renny Quow is out to make a name for himself in track and field.

The junior world champion for Trinidad and Tobago has gone from ninth to fourth in the 400-meter world rankings this year and recently signed with adidas at age 21.

Now he would like to make an impression at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships that begin today in Berlin.

Quow, a Piper graduate who lives in Tamarac, has been coached by veteran local track and former Army coach Wayne Lewis since 2006, when he's not attending South Plains Junior College in Levelland, Texas.

At 18, he won a junior world title followed by indoor and outdoor junior national titles and a victory at the Millrose Games. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he was the youngest finalist at 20. He finished seventh in a career-best 44.81.

"I want to make my country proud," said Quow, the youngest of five sons and two sisters. "I am sure I will be nervous. It is a big stage."

Quow hopes to become the first non-American runner to break 44 seconds.

"I wasn't really that good until I reached the age of 16 and started traveling," Quow said. "I remember my dad telling me I could be a pretty good runner. When I switched from the 100 to 400 meters, I found my race."

Lewis, in remission from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer formed by malignant cells, will join Quow in Berlin. The two have been training at the new Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar.

"Every time he gets a break at school he comes down here, six weeks over Christmas, spring break and summers. Every chance he gets he is down here," Lewis said.

"He has been here since April competing in major meets in Jamaica, New York, Trinidad, Oslo, Norway and Rome and finished in the top three running against the likes of Jeremy Wariner and LaShawn Merritt of the U.S. and Chris Brown of the Bahamas. He is right on schedule. He's been getting quicker. He should do very well."

Nightmare you have &*%#$ goat mouth. Callandar would have had a good chance of making it through in any other heat except for the 3rd, but that heat 5 is pure madness. Everyman not named Bolt have to put the pedal right down to the floor in that race.

Richard got a lolipop heat, Burns will have to push in his heat, but he's still clearly in the top 3.

Multiple sub-10's to be expected.

aviator why i getting blame with goat mouth... ;D

i am not a track expert like you and ato, the little i know about track is through my brother when i use to follow the sport when he ran back in the days.  in 5 heats there will always be 1 or 2 heats that will produce fast times because the field is stacked in those races.

it will be good experience for callender regardless of his final placing.

Nah I think he will have to go under 10.05 to have a chance in hell. Bailey and Bolt have the first 2 spots. So is ah battle royal between himself, Williamson, Edwards and Martina who has gone sub-10 for the year already. The onle fastest loser spot will most likely come from this heat.
