Football / On de topic of the name "Soca Warriors"...
« on: January 09, 2006, 08:43:53 AM »
since people want to change it to "soca chutney parang pow hornerman warriors" now...i will admit that i thought the name to be quite unoriginal back in the late 90s when the name first came out.

because jamaica call their team the "reggae boyz", it seem like we follow along the same vein. i get enough horrors from mih jamaican partners for dat..."inno following we".

i prefer "Strike Squad".

Football / Your Reflections on The Journey to Germany 2006

our place in the final round was expected after a favourable grouping in the semi -final round. thanks to bertie for getting us to the finals.

after that, i think i developed a high-blood pressure condition. so many "must win's" and 1 goal wins. at the same time, post the 0-0 tie with CR at home, we improved on a game by game basis. we represented well even in the US and Mexico. bahrain put up more of a challenge than expected but our destiny was ultimately fulfilled by a solid team effort. we are finally where we rightfully belong.

« on: October 31, 2005, 02:31:28 PM »
i was talking to partners this weekend who from africa but fanatically supporting club from england and spain like arsenal and real madrid when they never set foot in either country and have no ties to the clubs or where they from. i know it have some man here like that.

the only football teams i have an allegiance to is:

3. FIU (i went there)
4. miami fusion (now defunct. i used to live in miami for donkey yrs.)
5. my amateur current team in atlanta. i is play for them.

btw, the arsenal vs. chelsea graphic on de side is only because it was the only goal scoring animated gif i coulda find on google image search.

Football / MEX Squad for Last Two WCQ's

looking strong. a bit too strong.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Mexico, who have already booked a berth at next year's World Cup, called up Argentine-born striker Guillermo Franco on Thursday for their remaining two qualifiers while Cuauhtemoc Blanco was again overlooked.

The possibility of a call-up for Monterrey's Franco had re-ignited a fierce debate over the presence of foreign-born players in the squad.

Coach Ricardo La Volpe, himself an Argentine, has already caused controversy by selecting Brazilian-born forward Antonio Naelson for the squad, although he was left out on this occasion.

Guadalajara striker Adolfo Bautista, who has been unable to win a place in the squad recently, has been one of the most vociferous critics of La Volpe's policy.

Mexico made sure of a top-three finish in the final stage of the CONCACAF qualifying competition by beating Panama 5-0 last month.

They are level with the United States, also qualified, on 19 points from eight games.

The inspiration behind America's 27-match unbeaten run in domestic games, Blanco has not been picked since he pulled out of the Confederations Cup squad in June saying that he needed a holiday.

Blanco reacted angrily when he was left out of the qualifier at home to Costa Rica in August, saying that La Volpe did not have big enough trousers to pick him.

He later apologised for the comment.

Forward Jesus Arellano, who played in the 2002 World Cup, was given a recall by La Volpe, one day after scoring a hat-trick for Monterrey in a 3-1 win at Sinaloa.

A number of regulars, including Barcelona's Rafael Marquez and Bolton Wanderers forward Jared Borgetti, were rested.

Mexico host Guatemala on October 8 and visit Trinidad & Tobago four days later.

Goalkeepers: Oswaldo Sanchez (Guadalajara), Moises Munoz (Morelia)

Defenders: Mario Mendez (Toluca), Francisco Rodriguez (Guadalajara), Carlos Salcido (Guadalajara), Ricardo Osorio (Cruz Azul), Hugo Sanchez Guerrero (UANL), Oscar Rojas (America), Israel Lopez (Toluca)

Midfielders: Juan Pablo Rodriguez (UAG), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Gonzalo Pineda (UNAM), Jaime Lozano (UANL), Luis Ernesto Perez (Monterrey), Carlos Morales (UANL).

Forwards: Jesus Arellano (Monterrey), Rafael Marquez Lugo (Morelia), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara), Francisco Fonseca (Cruz Azul), Guillermo Franco (Monterrey)

Latapy doubt after plane delays
BBC Sport

Falkirk playmaker Russell Latapy could miss the visit of Rangers on Saturday after being delayed on a flight to Scotland from international duty.

But Rangers defender Marvin Andrews appears to have been able to find alternative transport after playing for Trinidad & Tobago in midweek.

Dundee goalkeeper Kelvin Jack and St Johnstone striker Jason Scotland are stranded in Miami with Latapy.

Saints boss Owen Coyle said: "It's unlikely that we'll have Jason back."

St Johnstone play Ross County on Saturday, while Jack was due to play for Dundee against Airdrie United.

Dundee manager Alan Kernaghan told BBC Sport: "We're trying to arrange a flight back for the keeper.

"But if he doesn't make it back to Scotland until Saturday morning then I will play Scott Murray in goal."

Kernaghan also confirmed that 17-year-old Jamie Kelly, who is still at school, would therefore be on the substitutes' bench.

Trinidad & Tobago recorded a 3-2 win over Guatemala, but the following 2-0 defeat by Costa Rica severely dented their hopes of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

Smoke had been detected in the cockpit of the players' Miami-bound plane shortly after take-off from San Jose airport and the captain made the decision to divert to Liberia.

There are reports that the captain struggled to control the aircraft at one point as it dipped low enough for the passengers to see Costa Rican terrain.

The players are now said to be awaiting transportation from Liberia to Miami.
