Magical win (2-1)

Roger Bogunyà

When the title looked like it was heading for Boca in the 92nd minute, up stepped Puyol and Eto'o, who turned the game around in three magical minutes; 180 seconds which gave FC Barcelona its 33rd Joan Gamper trophy.

Like all the greatest magicians, FC Barcelona saved the best trick for last. In an electrifying finish, the blaugranas managed to turn round a game that was quickly running away from them and already into added time. Up to that moment they had been unable to impose their style on the game and Boca were able to play the counter attack to perfection.

It was Puyol who hit the equaliser in the 92nd minute, cancelling out Viatri’s opening goal. It looked like the game would be a repeat of the 1-1 draw played out by the two teams in 2003 when the Gamper trophy was decided on penalties. However, Eto'o still had something to say and, in the 95th minute, he completed the comeback by scoring the winner for the home team.

Sergio – off the bar

The game started slowly with a lot of stops. FC Barcelona kept possession but Boca, well organised in defence, were the more comfortable side. But the Argentinians still looked to attack with passes into space for Palermo and Noir, but without any success.

The first half saw both teams apparently content to play safe. There was only one shot of conviction which saw Sergio’s long range effort beat Caranta but come back off the bar. There was a lack of understanding from the Barça players in an eleven which comprised only two players who started the game against Wisla – Márquez and Henry.

Same dynamic, same crossbar

The restart saw a number of changes with Guardiola bringing on four of the eleven subs allowed – Puyol, Abidal, Jeffren and Pedro. Boca were not to be outdone and made five substitutions of their own. However, the first few minutes of this half looked pretty much like the first. Boca even had a similar scoring chance with Viatri striking the same woodwork as Sergio. It was only the first warning.

Viatri puts Boca aheag

Guardiola made four more substitutions in the 62nd minute. He had to find the fluidity and understanding lacking in Barça’s game but the introduction of Xavi, Iniesta, Vázquez and Eto'o, which meant a change from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3, didn’t have the desired effect. The men from Buenos Aires, however, were getting closer and closer to Pinto’s goal until Viatri finally beat the Barça keeper in a one-on-one inside the area in the 72nd minute.

Improving with time

As can happen, the goal spurred Barça on and, though a goal down with only fifteen minutes remaining, they began to play their best football. Iniesta had three chances in five minutes to equalise but pulled his shots. Barça attacked down the wings with speed and played quick triangles. Their chances came and the crowd cheered them on.

Puyol and Eto'o turn the score around

The equaliser finally came from a corner in the 92nd minute when Puyol headed into the top corner. The best, however, was yet to come in a pulsating finish. Firstly, Cardozo had a one-on-one situation with Pinto, which the keeper saved.

The ensuing kick out from the keeper was the origin of the winning goal - Eto'o heading home a Xavi cross from the right. Two goals in three minutes and euphoria in the stands as FC Barcelona won their 33rd Gamper trophy.

Xavi: Ronaldinho paid price for lifestyle at Barca

MADRID, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Brazilian forward Ronaldinho paid the price for his off-field lifestyle at Barcelona, according to former team mate Xavi.

'Ronnie has always led the same sort of lifestyle,' the Spain midfielder told Marca in an interview published on Monday. 'He always told us: 'that's the way I am'.

'When you lead that sort of life you have to understand that when your level drops then the knives will be out. He is like that, he likes going out and enjoying life.

'He was full of life ever since he arrived and that's how he won two leagues and a Champions League.'

Despite his successes in his first three seasons at the club, Ronaldinho attracted heavy criticism when his performances dropped off and his fitness flagged.

Throughout last season there were reports that Barca wanted to sell him off and the 28-year-old finally moved to AC Milan for a fee up to 25 million euros ($37.27 million) in July.

'He has his own private life that should not be interfered with, but it is true that that private life also affects his sporting performances,' said Xavi.

'Ronie went from being an idol for all Barcelona fans to being jeered and criticised and that hurts anyone.'

Xavi said striker Samuel Eto'o, who has received a reprieve after being expected to leave the club in the close season, had learned from his mistakes.

'People think that he is unprofessional and a bad team mate as if he were some sort of time bomb waiting to explode in the dressing room, but he is nothing of the sort. He is an example of professionalism.

'He knows he has made a lot of mistakes, but he surprises me with the enthusiasm and sacrifice he makes in every game. He wants to be the best and he is.'

Xavi said discipline at the club had suffered in the latter stages of Frank Rijkaard's reign as coach, but said said that new boss Pep Guardiola had managed to get the players back into line.

'They are two very different coaches,' he said. 'Rijkaard believes in self-regulation but that is almost impossible in a team like Barcelona where the players earn a lot of money and win a lot of trophies.

'In all collective activities there has to be order and discipline and that is what Guardiola has imposed.... As a coach he knows what he wants and he has got some very clear ideas.'

Barca have been in impressive form in their pre-season matches and hold a comfortable 4-0 advantage after the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round match against Wisla Krakow.

Messi now in Barcelona with gold medal
24/08/08
www.fcbarcelona.cat

Messi has now returned to Barcelona after winning Olympic gold on Saturday in Beijing. The player, who had just arrived, went almost directly to the Nou Camp where he admitted that he was highly motivated to play again for Barça.

Leo Messi arrived at Barcelona airport this morning from Beijing. With his gold medal in his hand, the player went home to change and then went directly to the Now Camp to meet up with his team mates and start work.

Grateful

But first Messi spoke with the media and once again he thanked the club for allowing him to go to the Olympics in the first place: “I was only able to go thanks to them. I am grateful to the club, the president and the manager”.

Medal makes up for everything

gLeo Messi admitted that “the medal makes up for everything that has been said. And to return with a medal is even more perfect”.

The Argentinian also said that the gold medal allowed him “to continue growing. It gives me strength and a lot of joy for myself, my team mates and for Argentina”.

Barça on his mind

Once in Barcelona, Leo Messi is only interested in returning to work with his club. The young Argentinian is “highly motivated and happy with the squad, with the new players and the hope and excitement that is evident at the club”. He added that he “wants to be with the squad from the beginning”.

Nothing change! Dominate the game and loss. Two very glaring misses Bojan and Pique and several god chances missed.

I finally figured out why Henry not scoring anymore. It is the same thing that happened to Dwight & Andy Cole.

They all switched to Reebok, talk about ah shit boots  ;D
