Football / Welcome Sunderland Fans!
« on: January 03, 2007, 04:19:03 AM »
A hearty Welcome from socawarriors.net!!

I assure you, despite a few rotten eggs, which are common amongst any community, we're delighted to see Carlos pair up with Yorke at a top club such as Sunderland...

True, Sunderland have seen some rough times, but with all the necessary components in place now I'm sure Sunderland are going to make a real surge to the top!

So fly the trini flags in the glorious stadium of light and send down a shipment of Sunderland home kits for us to wear to every trini match.

and for the few negative posts that have popped up... ill leave you with the words of our very own, WestCoast:

"A Huge welcome to all the recent posters from the Sunderland FC.

One thing that all you lads have to Remember is that we have some of the worlds BEST CHESTERFIELD managers  ;D ;D right here on this site and they know what is best for Carlos, is just that they have not convinced Carlos of that yet   ;D ;D

it is going to be Great with Carlos playing in Sunderland."

Our new new years resolution...

Seeing Sunderland's stadium of light hosting Premiership games again as it deserves!

Cricket Anyone / Lara or Bradman??
« on: November 24, 2006, 02:17:37 PM »
0 to 100 before lunch ... for the first time in 30 years and only the second occasion in almost 70 years - Don Bradman's 334 in 1930 ... Lara's tally ranks only behind Bradman's ...should he exit undefeated ...hmm? pure class.

hes goin for the triple to surpass bradman for most triple centuries, ah class by himself above bradman :beermug:

Stewps... now you are trying to argue that Lara is a Class above Bradman... you on f**kin crack awa?

tell me how lara isnt above bradman? ??? by the way, bradman played when it was 6 day test matches, 7 balls in a over and 2 test series a year sometimes, compare that to the most studied batsman in the history or cricket, brian charles lara, in bradman's time, the opponent couldnt study how to get bradman out, they simply played it by ear....
[/b]

Lets have an open debate on this one.

Im quite interested to see who will rate who higher and for what reasons.

Full improved match report... No spelling errors...almost.

Southampton 2-0 Wolves
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his first goal for two months to set up victory for Southampton and send Wolves to their fourth straight away defeat.

Wright-Phillips collected Kenwyne Jones' knockdown and curled home from the edge of the area with the first decent shot at goal of the match.

Jones secured the points with a volley from 12 yards before Wolves keeper Matt Murray denied Rudi Skacel a third.

Wolves' best chance came when Karl Henry's free-kick flew just over.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Southampton boss George Burley on goalscorers Kenwyne Jones and Bradley Wright-Phillips:
"They are both young lads and if they continue to play like that it will be hard to drop them.

"Bradley started the season ever so well but his confidence has dipped in the last few weeks and we've worked hard in getting it back.

"Kenwyne is 22 and is in only his third year as a professional."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"That was the first game all season where we have not created anything.

"We kept trying to pass the ball through the middle rather than get it out wide.

"They had a back four that seemed to want the game more than we did. It was not good tonight. Once we went two goals down we seemed to have no chance."

This is simply...amazing.

This is the most intelligent thread TI has ever started, but I notice the Tobago love between he and TT ent change at all...

The major problem with any "Revolution" is assuring that whatever void is left by the evinced corrupt/evil/undemocratic power is not quickly or craftily occupied by another corrupt/evil/undemocratic power which has also the benefit of hindsight so as not to make the same mistakes and is thus harder to get rid of.

The other risk is that the destruction of the centralising force (albeit) corrupt will usher the régime into a centripetal power struggle launched by various competing forces seeking to all proclaim themselves as the successors to the old regime.

The question one has to ask is:

Is WARNER (1 man) the root of the problem or does it come from a culture of corruption/"despotism" propagated over several decades ?

Can the TTFF function cleanly with one "unclean" person at its head ?

Is an integral purge necessarily the best option at this stage ?

Can good come out of Nazareth? (i.e. are there any elements to the TTFF worth retaining in a future project for Trinidad and Tobago football administration and developpment ?

Have Warner and his cronies only been able to go as far as they have because of a lack of vigilance on the part of the major stakeholders in football, and principally on the part of the fans?

My analysis of the situation is that Warner is using the old James (do your research people) formula of autocratism and authoritarianism in the football federation in an epoch which no longer calls for it. However, he has also added a singular dimension of corruption and lack of transparency to it that makes him that much more dangerous seeing the quantity of money and ressources put into play....It is up to us, to the players, the sponsors and the government to let him know that we are no longer capable of tolerating this. The question is, after having feasted of the fatted calf for so long, is it possible to ask him to band his belly? I doubt it. So he has to go
Warmonga in his blind devotion to his "daddy" has asked a pertinent question. Who will replace him? But the question is pertinent, not from a financial point of view, but from an ethical one. What is to stop us getting more of the same or worse than the old Jackula? This is where the TTFF's entire modus operandi needs to be examined...

TrinInfinites response...

Luton vs Stoke

Luton could be without Markus Heikkinen and Steve Robinson as both are struggling with ankle injuries.

But midfield duo Carlos Edwards and Lewis Emanuel should be fit in time.

Stoke defender Carl Hoefkens could miss the trip to Luton after he limped out of Belgium's Euro 2008 qualifier against Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

Carl Dickinson is the only fit full-back but manager Tony Pulis can add on-loan Cardiff midfielder Jeff Whitley straight into his squad.

West Indies name squad for tri-series

Kern De Freitas

August 5, 2006

Carlton Baugh gets the nod ahead of Denesh Ramdin.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has accepted the invitation from the Indian board (BCCI) to participate in the tri-nation series in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in September and selected a squad of 14 players. However, the WICB bypassed the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and issued match/tour contracts directly to selected players.

According to a WICB release yesterday, the decision was taken to directly invite players to the tour, after talks on Wednesday between board representative Deryck Murray and Dinanath Ramnarine, the WIPA president, and subsequent discussions between Ramnarine and Ken Gordon, the WICB president, "broke down in spite of our best efforts."

The release continued: "It has now become imperative that we act if we are to participate in this series because of the tight timelines between now and the September tournament".

The release also disclosed that offers to the players for the series ranged from a minimum of US$25,000 to a maximum of US $59,000 per player, with the "prospect of each player earning an additional 50 per cent on these fees if West Indies qualifies for the final".

The WICB also stated that these fees were "unprecedented" at 488% of the normal match fees, and "25 % of the net revenue to be paid to the WICB for the series." They said this was only made possible due to the "one-off nature of the series" and the board's commitment to "enhance earnings of players whenever practicable".

The WICB also claimed the WIPA's demands - ranging from US$40,000 to $US95,000 per player represented 40 per cent of the net revenue the WICB were due to receive, and almost double the premium on normal match fees. They said this was considered "unacceptable". The disagreements over match fees and contractual conditions stem back to November 2004.

The selected players have also been given until August 10 to accept the invitation, after which the WICB said that another team will be chosen to replace West Indies in the series, which also features India and Australia.

A noteworthy inclusion in the squad is Carlton Baugh, the wicketkeeper, who replaces Denesh Ramdin, despite an impressive performance in the recent Jamaica Test against India. Brian Lara, who apologised to Gordon for his comments on team selection, will continue to lead the squad. Fast bowler Fidel Edwards returns to the squad after missing the last three Tests against India due to a hamstring injury.

Squad Brian Lara (capt), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Runako Morton, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith, Carlton Baugh (wk), Corey Collymore, Fidel Edwards, Ian Bradshaw, Jerome Taylor, Marlon Samuels, Wavell Hinds.

Trinidad and Tobago secured a berth in the semi-finals of the Stanford 20/20 tournament with a comprehensive 46-run win against Barbados. In a match postponed by a day because of rain, T&T eased to victory as Barbados folded up for 96 chasing a target of 143. The Trinidad duo of Nicholas Ramjass, the left-arm spinner, and Keiron Pollard, the medium pacer, shared six wickets between them and skittled out the last five Barbados wickets for only 17 runs.

Earlier, Barbados sent Trinidad in to bat and the openers William Perkins and Mario Belcon got off to a good start, adding 69. However, they were pegged back by a double strike by West Indies fast bowler Ian Bradshaw, who got the important wickets of Perkins and Daren Ganga. With the score at 79 for 4, Shazam Babwah resurrected the innings with 25, taking his side to 142 for 9. Bradshaw was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Fidel Edwards chipped in with two.

Barbados stumbled early, losing both openers by the fourth over, before Jason Haynes and Floyd Reifer got things going with a 28-run stand for the third wicket. However, they succumbed to some tight bowling and fielding, with Haynes edging a wide delivery to the wicketkeeper. Ramjass and Pollard then took over to dismiss Barbados cheaply, with the last seven batsmen failing to get into double figures.

Trinidad will meet Nevis in the semi-final on August 11.

Guyana 168 for 7 (Crandon 71, Lawson 3-29) beat Jamaica 163 for 6 (Hinds 44*, Deonarine 3-26) by three wickets

Guyana held their nerve in a tense encounter against Jamaica to reach the semi-finals of the Stanford 20/20 tournament with a three-wicket win. Requiring 38 with three wickets in hand, Imran Khan and Andre Percival guided Guyana home with an over to spare.

Jamaica opted to bat first in a match postponed from Friday due to rain, and posted a challenging 163 for 6, with contributions by Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and Wavell Hinds. Esuan Crandon led the reply with 71, an innings which contained 12 fours and a six. Guyana were going along well before Jermaine Lawson pegged them back with three quick wickets. Crandon kept his side in the game but Jamaica sensed an opportunity after his dismissal, with the score at 126 for 7. However, Khan and Percival played positively to take their side home

Guyana will meet Grenada in their semi-final on August 10.

Standford 20/20 Tournament

T&T confident of going all the way

T&T Express

August 1, 2006

Trinidad and Tobago, fresh from their quarter-final victory over Barbados in the Stanford 20/20 tournament on Saturday, face an intriguing Nevisian test in next week's second semi-finals, and manager Omar Khan and Daren Ganga are confident they can go all the way.

T&T suffered a middle order batting collapse after a strong start against the Bajans, but some tight bowling and outstanding fielding enabled them to restrict their arch rivals to 96 and earn a 46-run win.

Khan, though feels if the players continue to perform as a team, they can lift the inaugural Stanford 20/20 title. "That (winning) was our intention from the start," Khan told The Express after the team's return home on Sunday. "When we started the tournament, we discussed taking it one game at a time, and we have the intention of playing four games. We have played two and won. We have two more to play."

Khan, a former T&T player, also stressed that his team are not worried about their next opponents, despite Nevis' huge score of 213 against Antigua and Barbuda in their quarter-final. "We are not concerned about that because we know the bowling we have. We bowl to a plan, and we have the players to stick to that plan. The coach [former West Indies wicketkeeper] David Williams has done a tremendous job in working out who we have to bowl to what score."

Reflecting on their batting performance, Ganga acknowledged that his team made some mistakes, but stressed they would rectify that in time for the next match. "I think we were looking for too much boundaries in the period when we were supposed to turn over the strike and put away the bad balls," he said. "We also had two run outs at crucial times. But at the end of the day, we were able to get a victory, and I'm sure we're not going to make the same mistake twice."

Ganga was also optimistic that T&T could get the better of Nevis, saying the key is their performance in the field. "Basically we are going to ensure we play to our strengths," he said. "We were very good in the field. We did achieve the kind of total we wanted and we were able to defend it." Ganga also lauded youngsters William Perkins and Mario Belcon for the strong starts they gave the team in both matches, while also praising the other young players for their performances.

But looking ahead to the tests ahead, Khan felt the mental aspect of the game will be the most critical part of his team's campaign. "We have to continue playing intelligent cricket, very organised and planned cricket," he said. "So it's all about fast action game and you've got to keep thinking all the time and our intention is to outthink the opposition. We know we have batting from 1-11, we have very strong batting, and the guys made some mistakes, especially in the middle order, but we know they will come good [against Nevis]. If our batting comes good we know it will be hard to match any totals that we can make."

Hope among five Gills departures

Hope is the highest-profile of the five players released by the Gills
Gillingham boss Ronnie Jepson has released five players, including experienced defender Chris Hope.
Hope, 33, will be leaving Priestfield along with fellow defenders Richard Rose and Jonathan Wallis, and strikers Gavin Grant and Akwasi Fobi-Edusei.

But Welsh keeper Jason Brown, Trinidad and Tobago defender Ian Cox, and strikers Darren Byfield and Frannie Collin have been offered new deals.
Jepson is also hoping to re-sign Sheffield United striker Gary Mulligan.

Mulligan, 21, impressed the Gills during a 13-game loan spell between February and April, and is now in negotiations with Jepson.

Trinidad brush past Barbados tonight.

Not such a good batting performance... Dillion put on a good few runs near top the end.

only made a hundred and some...

managed to bowl them out for 90 some not sure who excelled most was asleep for most of the T&T game...

The Guyana Jamaica game was very Entertaining came right down to the wire...

Donovan Pagon couldnt dodge catching opurtunities... I believe he took 3 in the out feild in numerous different positions... Chris Gayle bowled well...

however a youngster from Guyana who tagged along with a very famous cricketing name (and appearantly a very common one considering we have a person with the same name playing for T&T)

Imran Khan... cooly lofted a mighty six off a straight drive accompanied by a good flurry of fours.

But the man of the night had to be Esuan Crandon...

The guyaneese all rounder I believe took a wicket or two and then continued to make 73 runs of 31 balls to basically single handedly pull his whole team out of a gigantic hole...

very entertaining stuff... and i do hope to see Crandon in the Windies team... very talented player... ive actually had the pleasure of bowling and facing him while at the oval and he is an ever improving player... quicker than you you'd think and a decent batsman.

Cricket Anyone / Mohummed vs Samuels
« on: June 27, 2006, 11:51:17 AM »
For me its Samuels... I love Dave he is a rare talent when it comes to bowling... a lot more expensive than Samuels but probably a more frequent wicket taker thus far... however Samuels creating a nice little bowling partnership with Gayle and with him you have a bowler who can bowl a spin ball 75-80mph which to me is a serious asset. Dwayne Bravo bowls around 75-80mph and ive faced him and it isnt fun atoool.

so to have a spinner do that is amazing... he is faster stronger and more agile in the field... Dave isnt bad but Samuels physical Superiority is obvious.

And his batting well... nuff said the man has plenty tallent... he has the talent to become a Sobers or a Headly... he has been very inconsistent but he has shown blushes of brilliance now and then most recently against India in the last test... 87... he took on one of the worlds top spin bowler in Harbajan and beat him around the place mercilessly ... hit him for four sixes i believe.

So again... for me atleast... Samuels edges past him quite definately in the end.

It has been strange... leading me to the darkest back alleys of Germany for a place to camp out for the night to Princess Diana's Althorp castle to stay a night for tea and cricket....

Through better and worse... I cried, I laughed, I cussed, but most of all I supported my warriors... and there are no words, no matter how complexly meaningfull they may be, can desrcibe how proud I still am with my team and even more so with simply being a Trini.

God bless us all.

Ganga is a doubtful selection becuase i do believe he is in the States after being invited tp play in some new 20twenty league/competition.

Shiv I believe is fit but im not 100% sure.

I think Gayle will come out on top, then Sarwan, then Lara and then Bravo followed closely by Shiv and Runako.

Cricket Anyone / Richardson lavishes praise on Lara

Attributes ODI success to his captaincy.

Richie Richardson, former West Indies captain, u-turned on his earlier criticism of Brian Lara's captaincy, attributing West Indies's success in the ODI series against India to his imaginative leadership. West Indies won nine out of their eleven home ODIs this season, which included a 5-0 drubbing of Zimbabwe and a 4-1 victory against India.

Richardson had earlier criticised Lara's appointment as captain for the third time in his career, saying that he lacked support from his players. Instead, he supported elevating vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan to the post, but was convinced the West Indies board reverted to Lara for the sake of getting instant results, with no long-term objective.

"A lot of people thought they should have annihilated Zimbabwe", Richardson told The Nation News. "It didn't happen. Maybe there was a concerted effort to try and do something different [against India], and have a different approach.

"I really don't know what transpired, but I believe Brian Lara had a part to play in that. Just the way he went about his job, especially in the field. He was there with a purpose."

Richardson also believed that Lara would have been spurred by negative comments, after Sir Vivian Richards also stated that his appointment was based on commercial considerations ahead of next year's World Cup. "Maybe something like that inspired Brian Lara. He is the sort of guy that if you criticise him, he's going to want to prove you wrong."
