Football / Coach Leo completes first camp
« on: May 04, 2005, 10:59:35 PM »
Trinidad Express

National coach Leo Beenhakker concluded his first two-day live in training camp with a 27-man squad at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Tuesday.
Aided by his assistants Theo De Jong and Wim Rijsbergen as well as Lincoln Phillips, Michael Maurice, team sports therapist Zeph Nicholas and Wayne Lawson, Beenhakker conducted two further sessions at the Arima venue on Tuesday after starting off at the Hasely Crawford Stadium the previous day.
Beenhakker divided the players into two teams for a scrimmage on Tuesday and Anton Pierre struck home a bullet from the edge of the box while Arnold Dwarika also netted a double to help the “Greens” to a 3-2 win. Michael Celestine was the other scorer while Gary Glasgow and Pierre got the goals for the other side. Aurtis Seaton also showed promise and overall the players gave a solid account which Phillips also agreed with.
“We concluded our first camp and it was a very good one for me in terms of picking up the ins and outs of the players here and getting to know a bit better of what I have to work with,” Beenhakker said.
Midfielder Densill Theobald said he enjoyed the first set of sessions.
“I think all of us enjoyed it. So far he (Beenhakker) has us playing a nice brand of football and you could see for yourself that everyone was getting things done. We expected nothing less than real professionalism from them and that’s exactly how things have gone so far,” said the Caledonia Fire man.
Dutchman Beenhakker will cut the squad to 18 players for the next camp starting on Monday before the rest of the overseas-based pros begin arriving by mid-month.
Trinidad and Tobago will resume their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign against Panama on June 4 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, before travelling to Mexico for their June 8 encounter.

Crew acquire Cornell Glen from FC Dallas.

The Columbus Crew and FC Dallas completed a deal Tuesday that sends Trinidad & Tobago international forward Cornell Glen to Columbus in exchange for the Crew's natural second-round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and a 2005 Youth International slot. Glen will be classified as a Senior International. To make room for Glen on their roster, the Crew waived veteran forward Dante Washington.
"We are excited about the addition of Cornell Glen," said Columbus Crew head coach Greg Andrulis. "Cornell is one of the rising young stars in the CONCACAF region. He is a dynamic forward who can change a game. We look forward to having another quality forward on the team."
A native of Port of Spain, Trinidad, Glen joins his third MLS team since coming to MLS for the 2004 season. Last year he was a member of the MetroStars and saw action in 18 games for the club, scoring six goals and adding two assists. He was then shipped to FC Dallas in exchange for the 12th overall pick of the 2005 SuperDraft, which the Metros used to select 18-year-old defender Tim Ward. Glen never made an appearance for FC Dallas in league play.
Prior to joining the MetroStars, Glen played professionally in his native land with San Juan Jabloteh. He has also appeared for the Trinidad & Tobago national team, scoring many goals for his country.
The release of Washington ends the 34-year-old's third stint with the Crew. In nine MLS seasons Washington accumulated 52 goals and 29 assists in 161 games played, including 111 as a starter. He also scored five goals and added one assist in postseason play.
"I want to thank Dante for his tremendous professionalism and commitment to the Columbus Crew," said Andrulis. "He is a first class individual who has had a positive effect on our team and our community."
Brent Rahim to come home.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Scottish-based midfielder Brent Rahim is likely to return home next month to train with the National Senior team ahead of the next 2006 World Cup qualifier against Panama on June 4.
Rahim, who has been performing creditably for Falkirk Reserves, playing in a forward position as well, has not been given a break in the first team and is keen to either move on, or sort out a new contract at the Falkirk in time for the team’s entry to the Premiers League next season.
But aside from that, Rahim wants to at least give National coach Leo Beenhakker a chance at seeing him.
“It’s been a bit rough, but I think maybe I can come back and get some training under my belt with the new coach and try to at least earn a spot in the team again,” said Rahim, who last lined up for T&T in qualifying match against Mexico last year in Puebla.
Also carded to return home next month is Dundee United striker Collin Samuel, who has been getting some playing time in the first team. Bolton Wanderers’ Ricky Shakes is also expected back around the same time.
Meantime, current Connection player Atiba Charles is counting down the days before he returns for pre-season training with Oldham Athletic. He is also looking at options in Scotland.
Doubts over Latapy's role in T&T squad.
By: Ian Prescott.

New national football coach Leo Beenhakker is due to return to Trinidad on Friday, from London, bringing with him two Dutch coaches as his assistants.
Beenhakker was on an assessment assignment last week, in Britain, where he looked at Trinidad and Tobago footballers playing in England, Wales and Scotland.
The 62-year-old Dutchman hoped to use the exercise to assess the quality of T&T's overseas professionals. He met with them and their club managers to decide on their suitability for the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Beenhakker begins his Trinidad and Tobago assignment with a 9 a.m. training session at the Larry Gomes Stadium, in Malabar, on Monday, with the senior national team, preparing for CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers against Panama on June 4 in Port-of-Spain and then against the powerful Mexicans in Monterrey on June 8.
Due to fly into Piarco on Friday with Beenhakker are Dutchmen Theo De Jonk and Whim Rhizerburg. That was confirmed yesterday by Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) technical director Lincoln "Tiger" Phillips, who was instrumental in securing Beenhakker's services after the sacking of Bertille St Clair on March 26.
Phillips said Beenhakker was adamant that because of the amount of work he had to do, the Dutchman wanted his own people involved.
No one in the T&T Football Federation could shed any light on the involvement of former national midfielder Russell Latapy, who the TTFF named last month as one of Beenhakker's assistants, along with Lebanon-based ex-national captain David Nakhid.
Latapy, an outstanding midfielder in his prime, has very little coaching experience. He is currently attached to the Falkirk Reserve Team in the Scottish First Division, where he and John O'Neill share coaching duties. Latapy is a member of Falkirk's first team, which recently won the First Division title under the guidance of John Hughes and his assistant Brian Rice, but only as a player.
Yesterday, new Trinidad and Tobago team manager Bruce Aanensen told the Express as far as he knew Beenhakker would be working with his own hand-picked staff of experienced coaches. He could not say whether Latapy had a role in the team except as a player.
"He (Beenhakker) felt he needed additional help and made it quite clear at a press conference that his aim was to use Nakhid (David) as a player. Beenhakker knew he had a lot of work to do, and not withstanding whether Latapy comes along or not, he still wanted to have two Dutch guys with him," Aanensen said.
Phillips, too, hinted that Latapy's role in Beenhakker's plans may be to join the team strictly as a player and not a coach.
"I am hearing so many things concerning Latapy," Phillips said, "and I hope it does not upset the team. I know for sure that Beenhakker wants to hit the ground running when he lands here. I suspect that he is going to split up the team among him and the Dutch guys, with one taking hold of the defence. He (Beenhakker) recognises that we do not have much organisation in defence."
Phillips added that he was familiar with one of Beenhakker's assistants, Whim Rhizerburg, having coached against his team in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He said Rhizerburg was a very good defensive coach.
Phillips, a renowned former national goalkeeper, said his job was to ensure that he gathered Trinidad and Tobago's best players, including Latapy and Nakhid, and so, give this country the best chance to qualify for the World Cup. "My intention is to bring back all our stars. If England and other countries do it, why can't we?" he asked.
Leo Beenhakker returns with big ambitions.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Leo Beenhakker is all set to return home on Friday to begin his duties with the Senior National Teeam ahead of next month’s 2006 World Cup Qualifier against Panama.
Beenhakker confirmed that he will have his first session with a the local squad on Monday at the Larry Gomes Stadium and he expressed a huge amount of enthusiasm over his first outing, saying also that he was able to put several arrangements in place over the last few weeks.
“Things have gone pretty well. Of course a lot of the process will take place in Trinidad but I have been able to get a lot of things sorted out here with the preparation of training programmes for the matches in June which for all of us is the main picture,” Beenhakker told TTFF Media from Holland on Tuesday.
“I was able to visit and see some of the players in England as well as get assessments on some of the others. I saw young Kenwyne Jones and Andre Boucard at Peterborough and my assistants saw the other guys at Wrexham. All in all I was pleased with the way things went and the main jobs starts back in Trinidad on Monday.
“We have prepared and when I return with the two assistants on Friday we will start the job with a  lot of ambition and passion and we will ensure that the players go about this with the same feeling and then all of the country will follow with us,” Beenhakker ended.
Beenhakker confirmed that he will contact former Dutch player Jan Wouters to get further information on the physical state of Glasgow Rangers defender Marvin Andrews before he considers him for National Team selection. He also mentioned that he should be in touch with Russell Latapy this week.
Josh Johnson inspires Jabloteh 4-1 win.
By: Nigel Simon.

Josh Johnson scored a second-half treble to lead CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh to a 4-1 hammering of United Petrotrin, the first win for the team in the T&T Professional Football League Senior Division, at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday.
The match also marked the return to Jabloteh of its former coach, Englishman Terry Fenwick, but his stay on the sidelines lasted just 42 minutes.
Fenwick, who led Jabloteh to the league title in 2002 before heading back to England, but re-engaged earlier this month, was ordered removed to the cover stands (from where he continued to give out instructions) after it was revealed to referee Phillip Jordan by fourth official Jagdesh Bimull that he (Fenwick) was not registered.
Jabloteh was made to labour through the first 45 minutes against a spirited Petrotrin team.
However, with the introduction of substitutes Noray and Kerry Baptiste for the out-of-sync Nigel Pierre and Jamaican Nicholas Addlery, Jabloteh looked a more determined team.
Within two minutes of the re-start, a feeble pass by Noray trickled its way through the legs of Petrotrin defender Beville Joseph, to Johnson inside the 18-yard box.
Johnson happily accepted the chance to put his team ahead, with Perry Martin stranded in goal.
Martin, one of five members of the national Futsal (Five-a-side football) team in the club’s line-up came up trumps to keep out another Jabloteh attack, this time a one-time volley from defender Charles Pollard from an Angus Eve free-kick.
From the ensuing corner, Johnson returned the favour to Noray, when he picked out his teammate with a pin-point corner from the right to him to head home for a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Three minutes later, Johnson got his second of the match and Jabloteh’s third, running onto a through ball from fellow midfielder Trent Noel, to beat the advancing Martin in the far corner.
The speedy Johnson, a former national youth team player, then put the match out of Petrotrin’s reach as he again slotted the ball home from less than three yards out, after Devon Mitchell another substitute had his shot parried down by Martin.
Kennedy Hinkson got a consolation goal for Petrotrin 15 minutes from full-time, when he beat Jabloteh custodian Daurance Williams on his near post, after a centre from the left by Kelvin Hernandez, managed to evade three Jabloteh defenders.
In three previous matches, Jabloteh had drawn with Defence Force (1-1) and Caledonia AIA Fire (0-0) and lost to table leaders W Connection 2-1.
Titus Elva fired in a 75th minute winner for Caledonia AIA/Fire to stun defending champions National Quarries North East Stars 1-0, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar for the second straight win of the season.
Elva had earlier saw two chances at goal kept out by NE Stars goalkeeper Trevor Nottingham in the 70th and 75th minute.
The win moved AIA/Fire up to second spot with seven points from four matches, five adrift of leaders W Connection. Today, W Connection, the 2001 champions, go in search of a fifth straight win when it meets Defence Force at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva from 5pm.

Yesterday’s PFL Senior Division result:

Caledonia AIA Fire 1 (Titus Elva 78th) vs North East Stars 0.

San Juan Jabloteh 4 (Josh Johnson 47th, 55th, 71st Kerry Noray 52nd) vs United Petrotrin 1 (Kennedy Hinkson 75th).

Today’s PFL Senior Division match:

W Connection vs Defence Force at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, 5pm.

Football / T&T’s Ince wants Lara to inspire struggling Crewe
« on: April 24, 2005, 09:14:22 AM »
Trinidad Guardian

LONDON—T&T’s Soca Warriors goalkeeper Clayton Ince says he wishes he could call on batting star Brian Lara to inspire his English League One Crewe Alexandra side to avoid relegation.  Crewe is currently four from bottom of the tables with 47 points with three matches left in the season and still in danger of being relegated unless the matches are won.  Ince explained that Lara, the world record holder for the highest score in Tests and First Class cricket, had given the Warriors a pep talk to boost their spirits prior to their last match of the Concacaf World Cup qualifying final round.  “Before the last Trinidad game versus Costa Rica, Brian came into the dressing room and had a little chat with all the lads.  “We had a bad result in the previous game so Brian tried to get us going. He told us how the West Indies were very low after the series whitewash by England. “But they picked themselves up and went to England to and won the ICC Trophy by beating England in the final. He inspired us and hopefully we can draw on some of that Crewe.  “I would love Lara to come to Gresty Road to give a talk but he is a bit busy at the moment,” Ince said.  Crewe has had a wretched run of form since the beginning of the year and has not won a match since New Year’s Day when the team beat Leeds 2-0.  Crewe will face the high-flying Ipswich on April 30 and struggling Coventry City in its final match of the season on May 8. Beenhakker to talk with Latapy this weekend.
By: Lasana Liburd.

It is a long shot but Trinidad and Tobago international defender Marvin "Dog" Andrews could be an unlikely saviour for Glasgow Rangers in the "Old Firm" derby this weekend despite refusing surgery on his left knee. Andrews trained without a leg brace this week for the first time since he aggravated his cruciate ligament injury in a reserve match two weeks ago.
And Rangers manager Alex McLeish, whose team trail leaders and defending champions Celtic by two points, acknowledged that Andrews might play in the decisive Scotland Premier League fixture against their bitter city rivals. "I would still say it's a long shot he would play this weekend," McLeish told the Ranger website.
"He still has to show he's suffering no pain or reaction from it. At the same time there's a fitness issue as well because he has been out for three weeks so we have to consider these elements.
"But if Marvin looks the part this week we will consider him."
If Andrews plays against Celtic, it could cap an extraordinary battle against modern science.  The powerful 1.85 metre defender injured his cruciate ligament on March 13 during a fixture against Dundee but refused a club order to operate. Although he did not speak to the media due to a club gag order, Rangers revealed that Andrews trusted God to heal him without surgery.
McLeish publicly urged Andrews to take the club doctor's advice, warned him he would not be entitled to compensation if his injury worsened and allegedly considered disciplinary action against the Christian. However, McLeish might pray for a miracle this week as he contemplates the aerial threat Celtic pose this weekend with giant strikers John Hartson and Chris Sutton.
The Rangers manager, a former Scottish World Cup defender, told the Trinidad Express that Andrews is the best player he ever saw in the air and would love to put his faith in the player on Sunday-once he is declared fit.
An Andrews outing would be a bonus for new Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker who will be in Scotland this weekend. Beenhakker told the Scottish Mail that he plans to visit Scotland this weekend to talk to former Trinidad and Tobago football captain Russell Latapy at Falkirk.
The experienced Dutch coach is keen to discuss Latapy's future role with the national squad, although he remains adamant that the Falkirk player/coach would not be allowed to shuttle between Scotland and Trinidad and Tobago as a member of his technical staff.

Football / madness between AC Milan and Inter
« on: April 12, 2005, 02:37:36 PM »
85 mins
Latest news: Officials are 'hoping' to resume the match in ten minutes or so. But how can they guarantee that Dida isn't going to get pelted by more flares and missiles? It seems ludicrous to continue in such an environment.

84 mins
The whole incident seems to have been sparked by the referee's decision to disallow Cambiasso's headed goal, at the end right in front of the Inter fans.

83 mins
I'm not sure how UEFA are going to deal with this; apparently the pitch is being cleared ahead of a possible resumption, although how the players' safety can be guaranteed under these circumstances is beyond me.

82 mins
It has been a clear attempt from the Inter fans to force the abandonment of this match. Certainly, I doubt whether the game will resume this evening.

81 mins
Still the flares and water bottles are thrown on to the pitch, though most of the fans from the area have left the stadium. The Inter players are now leaving the pitch also, though even they are not being spared the abuse and missiles.

80 mins
It has been a truly disgraceful showing by the Inter fans. For the last ten minutes they have hijaced this match. Inter are going to face a massive punishment from UEFA for this.

80 mins
The tunnel has now been extended out on to the field and the Milan players have sprinted, under a hail of missiles, to the safety of the dressing room.

79 mins
Dida is being treated with ice, though he seems to be okay. He was lucky to have been hit on the shoulder and not on the top of the head. He was almost too brave; he should have left the penalty area as soon as the bottles started reigning down.

78 mins
The air is thick with red clouds, and still the flares are coming down in to the penalty area. Firemen are now needed to clear the grass of the lighted fireworks.

77 mins
Many Inter fans, obviously disgraced by the actions of the thugs around them, have left the area behind the goal and seem to have left the stadium.

76 mins
Dida is still receiving treatment as Javier Zanetti attempts to clear the penalty area of water bottles. There must be 40 officials on the pitch also.

75 mins
The Inter fans are obviously unhappy with their team going out of the tournament, but their actions are likely to see their club heavily censured.

74 mins
Dida receives some treatment on the area where he was hit by the lit flare, but this game isn't going to restart for quite some time.

73 mins
Very quickly, Dida is shielded by stewards and moved away from the area. The area is clouded by red flares and the players are gathered on the half-way line.

72 mins
Dida attempts to clear the area of water bottles before taking his goal-kick. He is then hit by a flare on the head, and he falls to the turf.

71 mins
Cambiasso is booked for taking his protests to referee too far. The Inter fans really aren't happy with the decision, and begin pelting the penalty area with flares and water bottles.

70 mins  Oooh! Inter have a goal disallowed when Cambiasso heads in Mihajlovic's corner, but the referee blows for a foul on Dida.

Football / St Clair's road to rack and ruin
« on: April 08, 2005, 05:27:29 AM »
Newsday
By JOEL BAILEY

IT WAS reported that Bertille St Clair was fired as Trinidad and Tobago?s football coach on March 30, following the team's poor run of form in the CONCACAF World Cup Final Round Qualifications. But, like the American Terri Shiavo, St Clair?s reign as coach was actually in a comatose state long before his removal. In fact, St Clair?s role as coach really ended on November 20, 2004, following a three-hour long ?Meeting of the Minds?? at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Tunapuna. The meeting, which was hastily arranged by Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special advisor Jack Austin Warner, came three days after a 2-1 victory over St Vincent in a World Cup qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo ? a match described by many who saw it as one of the worst displays by a TT football team.

At a luncheon for the team at the Emerald Plaza, St Augustine, on November 18, Warner slammed the players for their unsatisfactory display and also noted that changes had to be implemented if the team were to advance to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In his typical brusque style, St Clair hastily left the function after Warner?s statement, which left members of the media at the event wondering if the die had already been cast. The simple fact that a discussion was held concerning the team?s tactical organisation was enough to suggest that St Clair?s head had to roll. At the coach?s behest, former captain David Nakhid was added to the technical staff as a player/coach but the results, as well as St Clair?s coaching methods, never improved. St Clair previously held the position as coach from May 1997 until February 2000.

During that time, he guided TT to two Caribbean Cup titles a semif-inal spot in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup while, as in his lengthy stay as head of Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive, he copped four national Intercol and six league crowns. But, ever since he was re-appointed as TT boss on January 16, 2004, to replace Stuart Charles-Fevrier, questions were raised about St Clair?s leadership style. This reporter also decried by St Clair after his first match at the helm, a lacklustre 1-1 draw against the Brazil Over-30s, on February 17. St Clair took umbrage when I wrote, ?on evidence of Tuesday?s performance, it will need a dramatic change of fortunes, even a miracle, for the Journey to Germany 2006 dream to be realised.? When he was first sacked as coach five years ago, the TTFF noted that ?St Clair lacked serious technical experience, in spite of some team victories, and it was decided that he should be exposed to overseas training in England with a view to improving his competence.?

According to a statement by the federation, ?further meetings were held with St Clair regarding his team selection as well as his coaching methods, with no apparent improvement in either area.? The TTFF, in an effort to lighten St Clair?s workload, then relieved him of (the) Olympic team and offered him the services of a foreign coach to assist him with the coaching of the national team, especially the defence ? an offer which he bluntly refused. The TTFF continued to be disappointed in St Clair?s technical competence and, in a meeting with him and the entire staff, he was then advised that he had until the Gold Cup competition to visibly improve his technical competence by winning the competition. He accepted this and, moreover, requested that his contract should ?be renewed now or else after the Gold Cup, the federation will have to pay real money, when he succeeded.?

While the TTFF were dismayed at the team?s performances during the competition, ?to add insult to injury, mere hours before the (semi-final) match against Canada, a group of senior players led by Nakhid, who was recalled from retirement without the federation?s approval and inclusive of St Clair (who opted to represent the local players) requested a meeting with Warner to discuss the disbursement of the (US$50,000) prize money.? The players rejected Dwight Yorke?s plea to delay the meeting until the tournament concluded while Warner refused to deal with the matter. Generally speaking, the statement, which was released to the public on March 2, 2000, was as applicable then as it is now. St Clair constantly boasted that he was the only coach from Trinidad and Tobago to guide a team to a World Cup ? the FIFA World Youth Championships in Portugal 1991.

While this is true, with a team led by Yorke and including Clayton Ince, Angus Eve, Jerren Nixon (players used during his recent regime), his record at the event was disgraceful. Statistics speak for themselves ? a 2-0 loss to Australia on June 15, a 6-0 hammering by Egypt on June 18 and a 4-0 whipping by the Soviet Union on June 20. St Clair ostracised himself from fellow local-based coaches, including assistants Ron La Forest and Michael ?Brow? Maurice, a number of footballing administrators and the general media due to his self-important style. Following a press conference on March 30, moments after TT held Costa Rica to a goalless draw, St Clair berated a television journalist after he was questioned about his job. ?What sort of stupid question you?ll ask me?? St Clair yelled. ?You see me, in Tobago, I live like a king you know.?

And that was another of St Clair?s many shortcomings as coach, his insistence that the public discriminated against him because he was a Tobagonian. But that was not the case. The plain fact was that the team was in dire need of changes in two departments, personnel and technical. Angus Eve was shockingly appointed as the team?s captain even though the midfielder, in the twilight of his career, seemed incapable of lasting an entire 90 minutes. While the likes of Leslie ?Tiger? Fitzpatrick, Marlon Rojas, Densil Theobald, Anton Pierre and Scott Sealy were introduced into the fold, with positive effects, there were too much tactical errors, especially in the area of player selection. The goalkeeping position was never settled, with Shaka Hislop, Clayton Ince and Daurance Williams juggling for the top spot while Jan-Michael Williams was constantly sidelined.

Derek King was also given an extended run in the defence, with Keyeno Thomas and David Atiba Charles used as after-thoughts while Brent Rahim, Andre Boucaud, Anthony Rougier, Stokely Mason were preferred instead of the youthful energy of Silvio Spann, Travis Mulraine and Kerry Baptiste in the midfield. Even Jason Nelson was plucked from nowhere to don the national colours during the team?s 2-1 victory over American A-League club Atlanta Silverbacks on March 23. But the most controversial issue surrounded Yorke, who was given the captain?s armband a month after making yet another comeback to the international arena. While St Clair constantly tried to plaster the sores, it became clear that, on current form, Yorke, Hislop, Eve and Stern John will be hard-pressed to maintain their spots on the starting line-up.

In 2005 to date, with TT beaten by St Vincent, Antigua, Haiti, the United States, Jamaica, Cuba and Guatemala, St Clair noted, ad nauseum, that the team conceeded a number of ?soft goals.? The TTFF were indeed soft on St Clair, as he seemed incapable of turning around the fortunes of the team during the last few months. Even the use of Graham Taylor as a technical consultant failed to pay dividends as the former English coach knew little of the local and American-based players. Now, another world-rated tactician, Leo Beenhakker of the Netherlands, and his assistants Nakhid and Russell Latapy, will all try to do what St Clair failed to achieve, gain the entire nation?s support for the team?s World Cup drive.

Football / Lace up your boots Latas!
« on: March 31, 2005, 06:18:11 PM »
I wonder how long it will take Leo to realize that Latas is still our best midfielder and should be out there on the pitch coaching the fellas from within the side.

I mean, if Yorke can come back and earn man of the match in MIDFIELD, you have to wonder what a REAL midfielder like Latas would do??  You can't tell me he won't be an improvement over Eve no matter how old he is now.  No disrespect to Angus but there really is no comparison there.

Perhaps Latas will reconsider his decision not to play now that BSC is gone.

Football / Wanchope to bench today
« on: March 30, 2005, 06:45:16 AM »
Fellas here is a Spanish article from a Costa Rican newspaper.  I tried to do an online translation which I posted below as well.  It doesn't work that great but you can get the main points of what is said:

Pinto moves his cards: Paulo Wanchope yields his place to Óscar Rojas, today before Trinidad

Juan Diego VILLARREAL/Al Día

Port Spain - The technician Jorge Luis Pinto once again will move his letters to extract a positive result today before Trinidad and Tobago, in the third duel of hexagonal course to the World 2006.

Before the height and speed of "Warriors Socca" and his desperation for winning, the strategist decided to make several modifications today in the stadium Hasely Crawford, from 4:30 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. of Costa Rica.
His intention is to strengthen his defense in the air game with Pablo Chinchilla's height in the center of the defense.
For such a reason, Gilberto Martinez will accompany Douglas Sequeira in the recovery and Walter Centeno, together with left-handed Alonso Solís, they will look for the creation in the midfield.

Double piece of news
In the attack, the Colombian will throw hand at the speed of Whayne Wilson and finally Oscar Rojas will leave the bench and will have action.
Again, since it has been a custom, Paulo Wanchope will not play in two meetings continued in less than five days.
He will be ready for the relief as it happened in two meetings before Canada, when it noted down in two occasions that it deposited of change.
The native cocktail realized yesterday at 9:20 a.m. of Trinidad the official recognition of the gramilla of the building where the party will be played today.

" Here there are no excuses to play badly, the court is in good condition ", affirmed Pinto on having concluded the practice of an hour of duration, under the inclement Sun.

Possible Lineup:
Álvaro Mesen
Leonardo González
Luis Marín
Pablo Chinchilla
Hárold Wallace

Football / What to do about Stern?
« on: March 29, 2005, 09:49:46 PM »
I've always heard the saying "Form is temporary, class is permanent" which suggests you should stick with your best players because you never know when they are going to get back their scoring touch.  However in our desperate situation we don't have the luxury of waiting until Stern turns things around, if we don't win tomorrow our World Cup dream is over.
Believe it or not, the decision that BSC has to make here is similar to the one that the Brazil coach is facing with Ronaldo.  the big difference is Brazil will most likely qualify even if Ronanldo continues to struggle for a few more games.

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 28 (Reuters) - Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira reiterated his backing for Ronaldo on Monday and said he had not considered dropping the out-of-form striker.
'Other teams don't have anyone like Ronaldo and are green with envy of Brazil,' Parreira told Brazilian media in Montevideo where the world champions face Uruguay in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.
'We have him, yet we've been putting him down for some time.'
Ronaldo has hit a bad patch with Real Madrid in the last two months and is reported to have clashed with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
His international form is also suffering and he looked lethargic in Sunday's 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Peru in Goiania, missing an open goal and wasting another chance when he shot weakly at goalkeeper Oscar Ibanez.
However, he partially atoned by providing the pass for Kaka's 74th minute goal.
Parreira denied that Ronaldo was untouchable in the team.
'If I have to take him off, I will,' said Parreira. 'But I think I ought to keep him on the field for everything that he is.'
'I've been keeping an eye on Ronaldo and I haven't seen him at an low ebb, or walking around with his head down. I think he just wants to get through this bad patch and go back to being the player that the world admires.'

Football / Donovan: I want to crush Guatemala
« on: March 29, 2005, 06:27:04 AM »
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The U.S. soccer team had a new altitude and a new attitude Monday.
A day after a 2-1 defeat in the smog at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, 7,200 feet above sea level, the Americans practiced at the University of Alabama-Birmingham for Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala at Legion Field.
"We all took a big, deep breath when we got off the plane," U.S. captain Claudio Reyna said. "I think after the week, two weeks in some cases, the guys got at altitude, that we're going to be very fit now coming back to sea level."
On a cool, windy afternoon, the U.S. team (1-1) trained on a field where an American flag flapped along with the Alabama flag -- a red St. Andrew's cross on a white field, sort of like the English cross of St. George flag tilted over.
Birmingham is 640 feet above sea level, and getting back to the United States was, well, a breath of fresh air.
"It's the first time I haven't been breathing uncontrollably in 10 days," Landon Donovan said. "It's nice."
Following two road games, the Americans are tied for third with Costa Rica in the final round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, trailing Mexico (2-0) and Guatemala (1-0-1). The top three teams advance to the 32-nation field for next year's tournament in Germany, and the fourth-place team goes to a playoff against an Asian nation.
Donovan attributed his tentativeness in the first half Sunday to his lack of playing time with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. He had not been in a game since March 7.
"I'm just not as sharp as I usually am," he said.
U.S. coach Bruce Arena didn't want to hear any of that.
"I think Landon has to say, 'I don't feel rusty,' because that's psychologic," Arena said. "It's not like Landon hasn't touched a soccer ball in three months. He's got to have his mind-set that he can get out there and play and have an impact on the game."
Donovan may be headed back to Major League Soccer. Kicker magazine and the Los Angeles Times reported last week that the Los Angeles Galaxy are close to a trade that would send Carlos Ruiz -- Guatemala's star forward -- to Dallas to acquire Donovan.
"I know that I have a decision to make in a couple days, but until then I'll be worried about Guatemala," Donovan said.
The U.S. player of the year for three straight years, Donovan says his club situation isn't a distraction, "not in the slightest," and that he thinks about it only when reporters ask.
Arena said that had better be the case.
"His job is to get on the field and play," the coach said. "You can't be worrying about his club situation at this point and neither can he. That's important. If Landon is more worried about other things, then it might be we have to make a change."
Donovan thought one half was enough to get his sharpness back and that he was excited to get ready for Wednesday's game.
"I want to just crush Guatemala," he said.
Guatemala is coming off a 5-1 win at home Saturday over Trinidad and Tobago (0-2), which lost its opener to the United States 2-1 last month. Ruiz and Dwight Pezzarosi each scored twice.
While the Americans are tied for 10th in the world rankings, the Guatemalans are 62nd.
"Guatemela is a very good team coming off probably one of their biggest wins ever," Arena said. "We expect a team coming in here probably with confidence and realizing that they can sit back a little bit and make us play."
