These  people need to get their geography correct about TT. ATO is not in PoS. Chaguanas.

What are the predictions for the TT clubs in this tournament. Will they follow the same faith of the NT team? Or will they perform well enough as past Trini teams who have "dominated" this tournament. See the DJW team is not in it, then there should be no issues of match fixing, right? So, both Central and especially Jabloteh should be trying to prove the point that they are not like the MNT.

Love the large field, still a shame half the Caribbean isn't represented though.

Jabloteh's group is straight-forward - I'm usually the one preaching caution about fellow Caribbean teams, but Flames united are very weak and Vincy football isn't at the standard of their neighbours at the moment. CS Moulien might present more of a challenge, but I don't expect Jabloteh to get less than 7 points in that group.

Central, on the other hand, have been dealt a crap hand - I find it hard to believe that placing 1st can give you such a terrible draw as compared to Jabloteh's 2nd place. Portmore are an excellent team - one of the top 10 or maybe even top 5 in the region, whilst Transvaal have the potential to cause an upset (again, I preach caution when dealing with the Guyanas, they're tough when on their game). Scholars are perhaps the weaker side, but they aren't a walkover like perhaps other teams are.

Group A is definitely the most competitive. You'd expect Racing to win perhaps, but Moengotapoe will give them a run for their money. Greenbay Hoppers and Bequia are also middling teams for the region, so they'll be interesting to watch.

Group B is also competitive, although I imagine Police (MSR) will do well to keep matches below 5 goals against. They have a lot of strong competition - Don Bosco are a good shout for reaching the Semi-finals under the usual format, Cibao are rebuilding into a professional team, while Sainte-Rose are a side that can compete.

Montego Bay will have little trouble in Group C, which perhaps represents the 2nd least competitive after Jabloteh's. Atlético have some potential,  as do Grenades, to compete, but I doubt they'll get much of a sniff at Montego Bay. Elite are a wild-card, but I wouldn't expect more than a win from the group.

Predictions;

A

B

C

D

E

Final Round;
1.Central
2.Montego Bay
3.Jabloteh

Don Bosco
Racing

There's a lot of scope to be wrong though - Don Bosco could bring a surprise or two - Jabloteh might be under threat from them.

CONCACAF Champions League unveils new format without group stage
BY JEFF CARLISLE (ESPN).

CONCACAF has announced a revised format for the CONCACAF Champions League that eliminates the group stage starting in the 2017-18 edition of the tournament.

The tournament will now involve 31 clubs and be comprised of two stages. The first stage will see 16 teams from the Caribbean and Central America compete in a tournament that runs from August to October.

The winner will then move on to the second stage, where it will be joined by clubs from MLS (five teams, assuming the winner of the Canada Cup is an MLS team), Liga MX (four teams), the winner of the Caribbean Club Championship, as well as the overall champions from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, and Guatemala. This stage will be contested from February to May.

"The expansion of the CONCACAF club competitions platform to 31 clubs is an important step forward in the Confederation's efforts to include more Member Association representation and increase participation at the highest levels of our competitions," said CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani.

"The continued growth of club competition in CONCACAF is representative of the strengthening of the sport throughout the region, and along with the new format for the Champions League, provides the base for a formidable club championship structure that will entertain and engage fans region-wide for years to come."

The effect of the format changes, at least as it relates to MLS and Liga MX clubs, is that the group stage that used to take place in the latter half of the calendar year, has been eliminated, thus helping to ease fixture congestion.

But MLS has long complained that the timing of the knockout stage of the tournament -- which has historically run during preseason and the early months of the regular season -- took place when its teams were far from peak form. The revised format will do little to change that.

A CONCACAF spokesman explained that the stakeholders from all of the leagues were consulted, and that MLS was asked whether it preferred to have the knockout stage run from August to October. MLS selected the option for it to run from February to May.

"One of the challenges that we were made aware of by MLS was that the August to October [timeframe] was likely to conflict with some important days on their league calendar, like Decision Day and the playoffs," said the spokesman. "So that was a challenge for them, among others, and alleviating fixture congestion was one of their goals."

As for why games have to start in February as opposed to March or April, the spokesman explained that when international fixture windows are taken into account, a March start date wouldn't allow for enough time to squeeze in eight matchdays.

"A March start would take up almost every midweek date, which just wasn't feasible," the spokesman said.

Wow big change and not for the better. Phase 1 will be poorly televised and attended, seems skewed in USA and Mexico's favour. One rep instead of 3 in the final tourney, unless they win phase 1. Belize royally screwed and Central America cluttering phase 1 with 3 overall teams each in the tournament?

Jabloteh off to CONCACAF Champions League qualifying.
ttproleague.com.

Keith Jeffrey, head coach of former Caribbean champions San Juan Jabloteh, is bracing for a baptism of fire when he leads the San Juan Kingsinton Group E action of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 2017 Club Championship—the Caribbean’s qualifying tournament to the CONCACAF Champions League—this week.

Jabloteh, whose 20-man squad left for St. Vincent today, will open against Sint Maarten’s Flames United SC on Wednesday 8 March (5:30 pm), then face Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien on Friday 10 March (5:30 pm), before completing the first round round-robin stage against hosts System 3 Sport Academy (7:30 pm) on Sunday 12 March. All matches will be contested at Victoria Park in Kingstown, St. Vincent.

Team captain and Jamaican defensive midfielder Damian Williams will lead Jabloteh’s 20-man squad which includes goalkeepers Javon Sample and Guyana’s Andrew Durrant; defenders Akeem Benjamin, Jerome Mc Intyre, Josiah Trimmingham, Jevon Morris and Jamaican Adrian Reid; midfielders Elijah Manners, Keyon Edwards, Jamaican Keithy Simpson, Kion Joseph, Panamanian Jairo Lombardo, Kennedy Hinkson, Nathan Lewis and Micah Lansiquot; and forwards Jamal Gay, Tyrone Charles, Kadeem Corbin, and Guyana’s Vurlon Mills.

According to Jabloteh coach Jeffrey, the San Juan club has already secured the signature of unattached Trinidad and Tobago international Carlyle Mitchell. However the T&T defender was unavailable for selection due to a groin injury picked up in training with the national team preparing for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Mexico on 24 and 25 March respectively. Also on the injury list is defender Aquil Selby while forward Brent Sam is still on trial in Portugal.

Jeffrey, who travelled to St. Vincent ahead of his team, will be joined by assistant coaches Nigel Henry and Gilbert Bateau, goalkeeper coach Joshua Lamb, and team manager Michael Watson.

“I have no idea about our opponents,” Jeffrey told ttproleague.com today. “But we know one thing for sure, they will be fired up against us. They will all see us as the powerhouse in the group. Trinidad and Tobago is at the top of the list in football in the Caribbean but we are not underestimating the other teams.

“I have spoken to the coach of the ‘Vincy’ team (System 3 Sport Academy) and they have been looking us up on Youtube, and I would think it’s the same with our other opponents. The most we got about them online is their standings and some results. System 3 have also strengthened their team, adding some players from the United States and from within their St. Vincent league.

“We will have to do the things necessary to make us successful even if it means some tactical changes after getting to understand our opponents as the game progress.

“What is also important for us is that our players understand that they are not only representing Jabloteh, but representing Trinidad and Tobago.”

Jabloteh, champions in 2003, last competed at the Caribbean Club Championship in 2010, finishing third behind champions Puerto Rico Islanders and now defunct, runners-up Joe Public.

Jabloteh’s runners-up finish in the 2015/16 Digicel Pro League season qualified them along with champions Central FC for this season’s Caribbean Club Championship.

“This shows [Jabloteh’s] management made a good decision in putting me here to get Jabloteh back into CFU,” said Jeffrey back then. He was installed as technical director/head coach when the four-time Pro League champions, Jabloteh, resumed top-flight operations for the 2013/14 season following a one-year hiatus due to financial strains after then major sponsor—CL Financial—went into receivership.

Jabloteh, now, are coming off a third place finish in the just concluded 2016/17 Pro League season behind three-peat champions Central FC and runners-up W Connection.

Central FC, the two-time Caribbean defending champions, heads a record 21 clubs from 12 countries who have qualified for the this season’s edition of the CFU competition, which will determine the region’s representatives to CONCACAF’s expanded competitions platform.

The five group winners will advance to the final round, scheduled for May 14 – 21. Central, who received a bye as reigning champions, will host the final round in Trinidad.

“Only the group winners will be going forward,” added Jeffrey. “And we want to play before the supporters in Trinidad. So it’s important for us reaching the final six, and with the support of the home advantage—the 12th man—we want to go all the way to the final.”

Haitian outfit Racing FC (Group A), Dominican Republic’s Cibao FC (Group B) and Antigua and Barbuda outfit Grenades FC (Group C) have already secured their final round berths after topping their respective groups. The final round will be played in two groups of three, with both group winners facing each other in the final.

The champions of the Caribbean Club Championship earns a place in the newly re-formatted CONCACAF Champions League, while the second, third and fourth-placed clubs will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship tournament for Caribbean and Central American clubs, which kicks off in August.

Lewis and Simpson on fire as Jabloteh out Flames 9-0 in CCL qualifying.
ttproleague.com.

Nathan Lewis and Keithy Simpson both grabbed hat-tricks as Trinidad and Tobago Pro League outfit San Juan Jabloteh dumped Sint Maarten’s Flames United 9-0 on Wednesday in the opening clash of Group E of the 2017 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship at Victoria Park in Kingstown, St. Vincent.

Trinidad and Tobago international, Lewis, completed his hat-trick in the first half with goals in the 21st, 40th and 44th minutes after Simpson opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the former Caribbean champions who took a 4-0 cushion into the break.

Jamaica national Simpson, who started along countrymen Damian Williams and Adrian Reid, made it 5-nil six minutes into the second half before completing his hat-trick on the hour mark--by which time Jabloteh were leading 7-0 inclusive of a 57th-minute item from Panamanian midfielder Jairo Lombardo.

Substitutes Tyrone Charles and Jamal Gay, who replaced Simpson and Guyana’s Verlon Mills respectively with twenty-three minutes left, completed the 9-0 rout with goals in the 72nd and 81st minutes, respectively.

Gay, however, will miss the remaining Group E fixtures against Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien on Friday (10 March) and host team System 3 Sport Academy on Sunday (12 March) due to a knee injury and is expected to be replaced by utility player Kennedy Hinkson.

Jabloteh coach Keith Jeffrey was happy for the victory but says his side were guilty of wasting a number of scoring opportunities.

“We could have been double the amount [at the end] but, like over the years without natural goal scorers, we weren't able to finish off the team early,” lamented the Jabloteh coach.

“Against Flames, who I would say can compete in the Super League (T&T’s second tier of football), we had around eight or nine chances in the first ten minutes but didn’t score.”

The result, however, put Jabloteh top of Group E but only ahead of Moulien by goal-difference, after the Guadeloupe outfit defeated System 3 Sporting Academy 4-0 in the second game of Wednesday’s Victoria Park double-header.

Jeffrey expects a tougher challenge from the Guadeloupe champions Moulien from 5:30pm on Friday in the virtual group final.

“I’ve had a look at them (Moulien) against the local side System 3 and they played a nice game and won 4-0,” Jeffrey said.

“It’s a virtual final for us on Friday. If we want to progress to the final six stage of the tournament we need to be more lethal. Our execution with and without the ball must also improve. Once we win on Friday we own Group E.”

A record 21 clubs from 12 countries, headed by two-time defending champions Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago, qualified for this season’s edition of the Caribbean Club Championship, which will determine the region’s representatives to CONCACAF’s expanded competitions platform.

The five group winners will advance to the final round of the Caribbean Club Championship, scheduled for May 14 – 21. Central, who received a bye as reigning champions, will host the final round in Trinidad.

Haiti’s Racing FC (Group A), Dominican Republic’s Cibao FC (Group B) and Antigua and Barbuda side Grenades FC (Group C) have already secured their final round berths after topping their respective groups.

Lombardo double virtually qualifies 10-man Jabloteh for Caribbean final round.
ttproleague.com.

San Juan Jabloteh looks set to join Trinidad and Tobago Pro League compatriots and two-time reigning champions Central FC in the Caribbean Club Championship 2017 Final Round to be hosted in Trinidad from May 14 - 21.

This after 10-man Jabloteh improved their stranglehold of Group E in St. Vincent with a 4-1 comeback win over Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien on Friday at Victoria Park in Kingstown.

Nineteen-year-old Panamanian midfielder Jairo Lambardo scored on either side of the break to cushion Jabloteh, after the San Juan Kings needed an equaliser through Verlon Mills after midfielder Minji Gomez had first put Moulien ahead.

Nathan Lewis capped off the victory with a late item but Jabloteh, already without injured striker Jamal Gay, must do without influential captain Damian Williams in their final group stage game against second-positioned System 3 Sport Academy on Sunday.

The Jamaican defensive midfielder received a direct red card midway in the second half. His position will be filled by Kion Joseph, Elijah Manners or Keyon Edwards, who according to coach Keith Jeffrey, have all “stepped up their game making the selection process a difficult one.”

The win, however, kept Jabloteh perfect with 6 points and a superior goal-difference of +12 ahead the clash against Vincentian team System 3 who have 3 points and a +3 goal-difference.

System 3, with a mountain of a challenge against Jabloteh, crushed Flames United 9-2 in the second game on Friday, jumping ahead of Moulien (3 points / +1 goal-difference) on goal-difference, while Flames, who will face the Guadeloupe side in their final game on Sunday, are anchored at the bottom without a point.

While a win or a draw will see Jabloteh through to the Final Round, a loss – based on the goal margin – can also suffice.

“We want to leave with 9 points,” said Keith Jeffrey, who plans to rotate his squad against System 3.

“We want to finish as shining group winners, but this game also allows us the opportunity to give other players more playing time, such as Tyrone Charles, Kadeem Corbin and Kennedy Hinkson, and give the team some fresh legs.”

The Jabloteh coach credited the performances of such players as Nathan Lewis, Keithy Simpson, Lombardo and Verlon Mills as “tremendous”, and said the competition within his entire team has been brilliant. He also singled out the performances of goalkeepers Javon Sample against Flames United and Andrew Durant against Moulien as great for the team.

Moulien had grabbed the lead on 13 minutes through Gomez and Jeffrey conceded that his side was outplayed for the first 20 minutes against the Guadeloupe outfit.

“I was very much impressed by Moulien,” said Jeffrey. “They were similar to Central FC in Trinidad, good structure in their play and all. But they (Moulien) didn’t have the speed to complement their play. Our speed and movement made the difference for us.”

Mills equalised for Jabloteh on 17 minutes, the Guyana winger's second goal of the tournament, before left-footed talent Lombardo gave the Pro League outfit a 2-1 lead by the 20th-minute.

Lombardo completed his double in the 68th-minute with his third goal of the campaign before he was replaced injured.

Lewis, who scored a hat-trick against Flames in Wednesday’s 9-0 opening win, got his fourth goal of the campaign five minutes from the end as Jabloteh moved one step closer to the Final Round.

Central, as reigning champions received a bye to the Final Round which will be contested in two groups of 3, with the overall group winners advancing into the title match and the Caribbean’s place in the newly re-formatted CONCACAF Champions League.

Haiti’s Racing FC (Group A), Dominica Republic’s Cibao FC (Group B) and Antigua and Barbuda side Grenades FC (Group C) have already qualified for the Final Round of the Caribbean Club Championship, while Puerto Rico Islanders, Jamaica’s Portmore United, Cayman Islands’ Scholars International and Suriname’s SV Transvaal will contest Group D in Puerto Rico from March 14 – 19.

Teams finishing second, third and fourth in the Caribbean Club Championship will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship tournament for Caribbean and Central American clubs which kicks off in August. The winner of that tournament will also qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Charles heads Jabloteh into Caribbean's final round of CCL qualifiers.
ttproleague.com.

Tyrone Charles scored off his head to seal San Juan Jabloteh's place in the Final Round of the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship—the region's qualifying tournament to the newly re-formatted CONCACAF club platform—with a 1-0 win over Group E host team System 3 Sport Academy on Sunday at Victoria Park in Kingstown, St. Vincent.

Jabloteh finished with maximum 9 points and ahead of, in descending order, Guadeloupe's Club Sportif Moulien (6 points), System 3 Sport Academy (3 points) and Sint Maarten's Flames United (0 point), to join another Trinidad and Tobago Pro League side, Central FC, in the Final Round to be hosted in Trinidad from May 14 - 21.

Central, the two-time Caribbean holders, received a bye to the final round as defending champions. While Jabloteh becomes the latest team to qualify for the Final Round after Haiti’s Racing FC (Group A), Dominica Republic’s Cibao FC (Group B) and Antigua and Barbuda side Grenades FC (Group C).

Puerto Rico Islanders, Jamaica’s Portmore United, Cayman Islands’ Scholars International and Suriname’s SV Transvaal will tackle each other in Group D in Puerto Rico from March 14 - 19 for the sixth and final berth into the Final Round which will be contested in two groups of three, each headed by Central and Jabloteh.

Both Final Round group winners will contest each other for the Club Championship title and Caribbean's spot in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Teams finishing second, third and fourth in the Caribbean Club Championship will join 13 Central American teams in the newly launched club championship tournament – set to begin in August – to battle for a trophy which guarantees the winner a place in the CONCACAF Champions League where they will join 15 other teams.

In the previous two seasons, Central FC defeated fellow Trinidad and Tobago Pro League compatriot W Connection in both Caribbean finals.

“We want it to be an all-Trinidad and Tobago final [again],” said San Juan Jabloteh head coach Keith Jeffrey, looking ahead to the 2017 Final Round. “We want to continue doing well in the tournament and we want to wish Central the very best also in the big six (Final Round).

“Both Central and Jabloteh being in the Final Round tells the rest of the Caribbean that the [Trinidad and Tobago] Pro League is the place to be. Our league is very competitive and we have the best players in the Caribbean.”

Flames United, Club Sportif Moulien and System 3 Sport Academy are the champions of their respective country, said Jeffrey.

“Our supporters back home and our community expected us to take full nine points and we are happy to be returning home having achieved in full—topping the group and with 9 points. We wanted to do well for Trinidad and Tobago and by extension the Pro League.”

Jabloteh were in control of Group E, with wins over Flames United and Moulien 9-0 and 4-1 respectively, ahead of Sunday’s final game against the hosts System 3 Sport Academy who, backed by their home supporters, did put up a valiant effort according to Jeffrey.

The decisive item arrived on 64 minutes for Jabloteh when Tyrone Charles, for his second goal of the tournament, headed into the back of System 3 Sport Academy’s net off an Elijah Manners corner.

But Jeffrey felt his side should have “finished off” the Vincentians by the first half.

“This was the best performance by System 3 during the tournament,” Jeffrey said. “They [also] had a good 12th-man in the home crowd but we should have finished them off since in the first half.”

Jeffrey had to do without injured striker Jamal Gay and suspended Jamaican defensive midfielder Damian Williams, who picked up a direct red card against Moulien on Friday. The Jabloteh coach also opted to start the fresher legs of Charles and Kadeem Corbin for star performers Panamanian Jairo Lombardo and Verlon Mills respectively, while veteran Keyon Edwards started in place of the unavailable Williams.

Jabloteh will return to Trinidad on today. Midfielders Tyrone Charles and Nathan Lewis will re-join the Trinidad and Tobago national team training squad preparing, under coach Dennis Lawrence, for crucial FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Panama and Mexico on March 24 and 28 respectively at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

Jeffrey, though, explained that his work has only just begun with the new Pro League season set to start in May, the same month his side, along with three-time reigning Pro League champions Central FC, must compete with the Caribbean's best-of-the-best for the regional crown and a place in the CONCACAF Champions League.

CONCACAF.com

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) has conducted the draw to determine the matchups and calendar of the Finals of the 2017 Caribbean Club Competition.

The champion of the Caribbean Club Championship will qualify for the newly re-formatted Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, while the second, third and fourth-placed clubs will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship for Caribbean and Central American clubs, which kicks off in August.

The draw, which was conducted by CONCACAF Director of Caribbean Football, Horace Reid, determined the groups and match schedule for the tournament that kicks off on May 14, in Trinidad and Tobago.

For the draw, the seeded teams were placed in positions A1 and B1, while the other four qualified clubs were sorted one by one. First, the name of the club was pulled from Pot 1, followed by the position from Pot 2.

Tournament host Central FC (TRI) was seeded into Group A and will face Cibao FC (DOM) and Grenades FC (ATG), while San Juan Jabloteh FC (TRI) was sorted with Portmore United (JAM) and Racing FC (HAI), in Group B.

The Hasley Crawford Stadium, in Port of Spain, will play host to all the matches of the regional club championship.

Central FC (TRI)
Cibao FC (DOM)
Grenades FC (ATG)

Group B

Keith Jeffrey looks one step further with Jabloteh—eyes Caribbean final.
ttproleague.com.

His opponents are Haiti’s Racing FC and Jamaica’s Portmore United—two teams deep into their respective domestic national leagues. His side, San Juan Jabloteh, meanwhile are currently only in pre-season.

But Keith Jeffrey, the technical director/head coach of Jabloteh, is unfazed by the challenge his side faces in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship 2017 final round to be hosted in Trinidad from May 14 – 21 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

“We have to win at all costs,” Jeffrey said last week. “We are representing Trinidad (and Tobago) in this tournament. Racing are second in the Haiti League and Portmore just qualified for the Jamaica League big four. So it’s a situation where we will have to make up with home advantage—the 12th man. It’s always difficult when you are out of competition but we are not making excuses.”

One year ago Jabloteh, under the guidance of Jeffrey, secured a second-place finish in the 2015-16 Pro League to qualify for this season’s edition of the Caribbean Club Championship—the qualifier tournament to the Concacaf Champions League—their first return to the competition since 2009.

Jabloteh, the 2003 Caribbean champions, made an impressive return, cruising out of the first round group stage last March with wins over St. Maarten’s Flames United (9-0), Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien (4-1) and hosts System 3 Sporting Academy (1-0) in St. Vincent to enter the final round as the seeded team of Group B where they must take on Racing on 14 May and Portmore on 18 May.

Central FC, the two-time reigning Caribbean champions, received a bye to the final round and heads Group A where they must face Grenades FC of Antigua on 14 May and Cibao FC of Dominica Republic on 18 May. (See full schedule below)

The top team out of each final round group will contest Caribbean title match on May 21, with the champions earning automatic qualification into next season’s newly re-formatted Concacaf Champions League, which commences in February 2018.

The second, third and fourth place finishing teams in the CFU tournament will join 13 Central American teams in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship which kicks off in August. The overall champion team of the club championship for Caribbean and Central American clubs will also qualifying for next season’s Concacaf Champions League.

“We would like it to be an all-Trinidad final on May 21,” Jeffrey continued. “But if that doesn’t happen, we want to make sure at least one Trinidad team makes it to the final.”

Last year Central FC defended the Caribbean crown by prevailing over rivals W Connection in the final for a second consecutive time.

Nathan Lewis, Carlos Edwards fire Jabloteh, Central ahead in CFU Club Championship finals.
ttproleague.com.

The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship could be on its way towards a third straight all-Trinidad and Tobago final on 21 May, after TT Pro League clubs San Juan Jabloteh and Central FC made winning starts to the finals on Sunday.

Jabloteh defeated Haiti’s Racing FC 2-0 in the first game of the opening double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad to top Group B, before Central FC, who defeated Trinidadian rivals W Connection in the last two CFU Club Championship title matches, shook off an early deficit to dispatch Antigua and Barbuda’s Grenades FC 3-1 to lead Group A.

Nathan Lewis, for his fifth goal of the 2017 campaign, fired the 2003 Caribbean champions Jabloteh ahead five minutes into the second half before a Joseph Mitchelson’s own goal sixteen minutes from time put the game out of the Haitians’ reach.

Central, though, needed a Jason Marcano equaliser, a cannon-of-a-strike by Carlos Edwards, and a 25-yard Nathaniel Garcia cracker to get past Grenades after the Antiguans had taken the early lead through striker Tevaughn Harriette.

Harriette had the simple task of slotting home from close-up against the run of play, in what turned out the only real attack on the Central goal, after the defending champions new goalkeeper signing Ryan “Godda” Thompson was hung out to dry by his defence who failed to cut out a squared pass across the area by Grenades captain Rakeem Henry.

Grenades’ Jamaica ‘keeper Michaud Barrett preserved his side’s lead ten minutes later with a fine save to put wide a powerful left-footed attempt by another new Central signing, 23-year-old American, Graham Smith. Then seconds later Sean De Silva drilled a volley across the face of the visitors net.

But it was a warning of what was to follow and in the 38th-minute Marcano put Central – who received a bye to the final round as defending champions – level with a wonderful volley off Englishman Lloyd Bannister’s cross from the right.

Carlos Edwards, a T&T 2006 World Cup player and former England-based defender, then hammered past Barrett to give the 2015 and 2016 Caribbean champions the lead for the first time a minute from the half.

The 39-year-old former Wrexham and Sunderland player, turned back the clock from just inside the top of the box after running onto a sumptuous feed from De Silva.

But still, the new-look Central, due to a number of new player personnel changes, were nothing of the side that only two months ago recorded the historic Digicel Pro League three-peat although getting business done against the Antiguans.

It was not until five minutes from time that Garcia finally knocked the fight out of Grenades with his strike from distance to stretch Barrett’s onion bag once more.

Earlier, Jabloteh were the better side against Racing, but only took the lead on 50 minutes when Lewis, who combined brilliantly on the left with Kion Joseph, evaded two defenders before sending a low finish beyond the Haitian side’s goalkeeper Maurisseau Bergeot and into the far bottom corner.

Racing attackers Stevenson Guillaume and Daniel Jamesley had two excellent scoring opportunities for the visitors but failed to trouble Jabloteh goalie Javon Sample with wide attempts.

Their attempts of a comeback would suffer a blow in the 74th-minute when Mitchelson inadvertently directed a Keithy Simpson’s dangerous ball across the area past his own goalkeeper, Bergeot.

Racing and Grenades will wrap up their second and final group fixtures on Tuesday -- at the same venue -- against Jamaica’s Portmore United (5:30pm) and Dominica Republic’s Cibao (8pm), respectively, while Jabloteh and Central will complete group play against Portmore (5:30pm) and Cibao (8pm), respectively, on Thursday.

The overall group winners will face each other in the Caribbean final on Sunday 21 May from 8pm, which will be preceded by the third-place game from 5pm between the second-placed team of the respective groups.

The Caribbean champions will earn automatic qualification into next season’s newly re-formatted Concacaf Champions League which commences in February 2018.

While the second, third and fourth place finishing teams in the CFU tournament will join 13 Central American teams in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship which kicks off in August. The overall champion team of the club championship for Caribbean and Central American clubs will also qualifying for next season’s Concacaf Champions League.

San Juan Jabloteh and Dominican Republic outfit Cibao FC will contest the final of the 2017 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship from 8pm on Sunday after both sides progressed from the final round in Trinidad as group winners.

The new Caribbean champions will also secure the region's automatic spot at next year's newly re-formatted Concacaf Champions League which begins in February.

Jabloteh, who grabbed first half goals through Adrian Reid and Vurlon Mills, were held to a late 2-2 comeback draw by Jamaica powerhouse Portmore United before 10-men Central, the two-time holders, were edged 1-0 by, arguably the toughest side of the finals, Cibao, on Thursday—in the final double-header of group action.

Patrick Soko scored the decisive Cibao item eight minutes into the second half after Central, who were hoping to create history by becoming three-time consecutive Caribbean champions, lost midfielder Nathaniel Garcia to a second yellow card a minute from the break at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The result lifted Cibao (1-1-0; 4 points) ahead of Central (1-0-1; 3 points) to take Group A which also has Antigua & Barbuda side Grenades FC (0-1-1; 1 point), while Jabloteh (1-1-0; 4 points), with the point earned, cemented their place at the top of Group B, ahead of Portmore (1-1-0; 4 points) on a goal difference while Haiti's Racing FC (0-0-2; 0 point) are bottom.

Central and Portmore will contest the third-place match on Sunday from 5pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium which will be followed by the CFU Club Championship final.

Central, Portmore and the Caribbean's runners-up -- as the region's second, third and fourth-placed teams -- will join 13 Central American teams in the newly launched Concacaf League which begins in August, in which the overall champions will also qualify for next season's Concacaf Champions League.

Jabloteh, who reached the CFU Club Championship finals as the best team of the first round group play earlier this year, had looked on their way for a fifth straight win of the campaign after leading 2-0 at the break.

Reid, one of three – team captain Damian Williams and Keithy Simpson the others – former Portmore players in the Jabloteh line-up, fired the San Juan Kings ahead from the penalty spot in the 34th minute after defender Kareem Manning bundled Mills to ground in a desperate attempt to clear a dangerous Nathan Lewis cross.

The Jabloteh penalty specialist left Portmore goalkeeper Shaven Sean Paul anchored to the ground as the ball entered the right bottom corner.

Mills then made it two nil four minutes from the half with a glancing header to beat Paul off a right side Williams’ free kick.

Sue Lae McCalla, who was replaced less than ten minutes after the break, had Portmore’s best attempt of the first half with an ambitious strike from distance which whisked past goalkeeper Javon Sample’s top corner.

It was business as usual for Jabloteh though, against a very physically Portmore side that forced top Guyanese referee Sherwin Moore to reach for his yellow card seven times, including the red shown to a frustrated Manning who was handed his second booking of the game over the 90-minute mark for dissent.

But the game had earlier turned sour for Jabloteh after a dreadful miss by Simpson, who struck the upright with the empty goal at his mercy just over the hour mark.

Lewis had initiated the counterattack out of the back before releasing Kadeem Corbin into an vacant Portmore half with only goalkeeper Paul at his mercy. Corbin on entering the Jamaicans’ penalty area forced Paul to commit before rolling the ball right to Simpson who, shockingly, hit the base up the upright.

Jabloteh head coach Keith Jeffrey, possibly expressing his fury, later replaced the midfielder with Kennedy Simpson, then with his team still holding the two-goal cushion followed with a double-change with Micah Lansiquot and Hayden Tinto replacing Elijah Manners and Corbin, respectively, with quarter-of-an-hour left.

But Portmore had earlier plans. Their head coach Linval Dixon had made changes too.

Substitute Jeremie Lynch pulled back a goal for the Jamaicans, beating Jabloteh goalie Sample five minutes from time after meeting a pass from Cleon Pryce inside the box.

Then two minutes later Portmore’s captain Ewan Grandison drilled in a low shot into Sample’s bottom corner after making contact to to Javon East's cross to level the scores at 2-2.

Jabloteh, who had missed second-half chances by Corbin and twice from Lewis, were rescued by Sample in stoppage-time when he kept out another Lynch attempt.

Cibao's Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Dominguez—one of three staring changes made by former Barcelona youth coach Albert Benaiges Sala for the clash—also made a superb one-handed save on the night, tipping over Central’s Sean De Silva’s attempt in the first half of the second game.

Cibao later threatened with Ernesto Trinidad's glancing header off playmaker Charles Herold Jr.'s corner in the 37th-minute.

Central survived another scare two minutes from the half when American Gerard Paul Lavergne's powerful low drive cannoned off goalkeeper Ryan "Godda" Thompson's far upright.

But the Couva Sharks weren't spared seconds later by Aruban referee Ricangel de Leca who issued Nathaniel Garcia -- cautioned earlier for apparent time wasting -- a second yellow then the automatic red card following a tackle on defender Richard Damas.

Central responded with a tactical change, replacing Callum Harris with striker Tyrik John after the break, and within the last fifteen minutes gambled it all by replacing Haitian defender Fresnel Simil and defensive midfielder Graham Smith with attacking options Johan Peltier and Keron Cummings in search of the needed equaliser.

The Couva Sharks' troubles had earlier doubled on 53 minutes when Cibao winger Soko swooped in the area to hit past Thompson for a 1-0 lead following a giveaway in the Dominican side's half by Taryk Sampson and a gallop down the left by Domingo Peralta to provide the pass across the Central area.

A place in the final was at stake and didn’t came as a surprise when the action boiled over just over the hour mark, forcing referee De Leca to quell a fracas as Cibao players accused Simil elbowing goalscorer Soko as they prepared to defend a Central corner.

However the remaining half hour, though keenly contested, went goalless, setting the stage for new champions on Sunday.

Central probably went into the game underestimating the Dominican team (thinking they already had the game won) and paid a price of defeat in the end.

The kicker is that Cibao is a mid-table team in the LDF this season.

Re: Jabloteh v Portmore

In serious 11 v 11 football one rarely sees 3 attackers bearing down on a GK,  3 v 1 with the GK being the '1' ... Absolutely crazy that a goal wouldn't be the end product. I had to laugh watching that, but it was an embarrassing moment for local football.

Generally, a lot of the highlighted footage exposes the domestic league rather than provides an advertisement for the league.

Looking forward to seeing a proper final with improved quality.

So, no live streaming from CFU to accommodate the masses across the CFU that would be eager to view a CFU club final?

It's likely Cibao FC will provide a stream. Will link it when it's up.

Plenty work for Jabloteh to do to walk away with this trophy. Paid the price for having defenders who didn't jump to challenge for the ball, others who were mannequins, and as a group who seemed to pass on responsibility.

I would like to see constructive football in midfield instead of by-passing the MF and not building a possession game.

Regardless, Nathan Lewis looks like he and composure are strangers.

Cibao is not in existence even three years. Come nah man Jabloteh!!!

The equalizer almost came to make the second half a different scene. Tough luck, Jabloteh. That's two T&T teams poisoned by the same chalice.

To be honest, the performances of the TT teams in the CCL is left much to be desired. Maybe this will be a wake up call to the pro-league teams, coaches, management that we not all that "great".

Cibao edge Jabloteh to take Caribbean crown and Concacaf Champions League place.
ttproleague.com.

San Juan Jabloteh let it slip in the final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 2017 Club Championship, losing 1-0 against tournament newbies, Cibao FC, who lifted the Caribbean crown, and in the process took the region’s automatic spot at next season’s Concacaf Champions League.

Defender Richard Madas’ first-half goal at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad was enough on Sunday night for the Dominican Republic outfit to hold off the 2003 champions, Jabloteh, who failed to convert a scoring chance seconds into the match and also had a second half goal ruled out, with an offside call, by second assistant referee Dane Ritchie of the Turks and Caicos.

Cibao, though, a club only in their third year of existence and coached by legendary former Barcelona academy coach, Spain’s Albert Benaiges Sala, had been outstanding while breaking barriers throughout the tournament.

Benaiges’ side had become the first Dominican Republic outfit to progress past the first round group stage, something Atletico Pantoja and Atlantico failed to achieve last season as the first two teams to participate in the Caribbean Club Championship from that country.

Cibao then dethroned two-time Caribbean crown holders Central FC last Thursday to reach the final, and now they are champions—the first international title for a Dominican Republic club.

Central eventually had to settle for a fourth-place finish, going under 5-3 on penalties against Jamaica’s Portmore United following 120 minutes of play and a 2-2 regular-time draw in the third-place match which preceded the final.

However all is not lost for Jabloteh, Portmore and Central, who, as the Caribbean’s second, third and fourth-placed teams, respectively, will gain valuable international experience at the newly formed Concacaf League, which kicks off in August, and includes 13 Central American teams.

The winner of the Concacaf League also secures a berth at next season’s newly re-formatted Concacaf Champions League which kicks off in February 2018, and will debut the bright orange of Cibao.

Cibao put the hurt on Jabloteh in the 31st-minute when defender Dabas beat Jabloteh goalie Javon Sample after the Trinidadian side failed to clear a corner from Haitian playmaker Charles Hérold Jr.

But Jabloteh had the earliest chance of the game when Trinidad and Tobago international winger Nathan Lewis headed tamely at Cibao’s Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Dominguez with less than 25 seconds played.

Jabloteh also started strong in the second half and three minutes in, Jamaican midfielder Keithy Simpson had the ball in the back of Dominguez’s net, only to be denied by the flag after a brilliant move on the left by Lewis who combined with Vurlon Mills before playing the ball across the area.

Dominguez then pulled off a fine low save to beat away a Jairo Lombardo effort just before the hour mark after Lewis had picked out Mills in the area with a cross.

However, finding the equaliser was as elusive as the unicorn, and without a natural forward at their disposal, Jabloteh failed to find a way back against, arguably, their toughest opponents of recent years.

Earlier, Central, a far cry from their side that won the 2015 and 2016 Caribbean Club Championships, also struggled against 2005 champions Portmore, although finding their equaliser through captain Keston George with virtually the last kick of regular time to send the game into extra time.

Central had led the game after just four minutes and 4 seconds courtesy an innocuous Jason Marcano strike which looped over Portmore goalkeeper Kemar Foster.

But the Jamaicans fired back twice in the second half through substitute Maalique Foster and Cleon Pryce, against some slack defending in the 50th and 77th minutes, respectively, before George levelled Central late.

Then following thirty minutes of goalless play in extra time, Central shot themselves in the leg when midfielder Sean De Silva skied his side’s first attempt of the penalty shootout overbar.

Portmore were already in front with Michael Binns netting against goalkeeper Akel Clarke in the first kick of the shootout, and as Ewan Grandison, Damion Binns, Jeremie Lynch and Foster all found the back of the net for the Jamaican side, Central continued to trail although Carlos Edwards, George and Lloyd Bannister were clinical from the spot.
