Charles excited over Women’s U-15 program
TTFA Media

National Under 15 Women’s Team head coach Marlon Charles has described the upcoming CONCACAF U-15 Championship in Disney,Orlando as the perfect opportunity for local players to deepen their love for the sport.

Charles was speaking recently as he commenced preparations of the National Under 15 team at the Larry Gomes Stadium. He is overseeing preparations of the team alongside assistant coaches Joanne Daniel, Desiree Sarjeant, trainer Gilbert Bateau, goalkeeper coach Glennon Foncette and manager Ricarda Nelson.

The 2016 CONCACAF Under-15 Girls’ Championship is scheduled to take place from August 9-21 in Orlando, Florida at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

A total of 26 national teams are expected to participate in the tournament.
  • 3 teams from NAFU: Canada, Mexico and USA
  • 5 teams from UNCAF: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua
  • 18 teams from CFU: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda,British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and US Virgin Islands.

“This tournament will give the players an early opportunity to see the different situations in the game, how it is played differently and also to experience a different culture. IT will be the first time some of these ladies will be leaving the country and it is all part of the education of our players when it comes to playing on the international stage,” Charles told TTFA Media.

“CONCACAF being able to stage this tournament and the fact that the TTFA is able to send a team in this age group to a major tournament augers well for the development of the new generation of women footballers in the country,” he added.

Commenting on the ongoing preparations, Charles added: “The early part of preparations has been focused on fitness. The tournament is in August so we were sacrificing a bit in the early stages on their physical preparation. We are also looking to get them to enjoy the game.

“The screening process was quite exciting. More girls are interested in playing football and actually playing football now. When you look at the numbers being 45 players in the early selection, this says a lot for the women’s game here. We want these girls to come out and enjoy this beautiful game. We will be encouraging a lot from that aspect. It is important to have them playing, enjoying and learning the game on a regular basis and this training program will allow us to have a start towards achieving this,” Charles stated.

Charles added that several of the current youth team players are aiming to emulate the likes of Kennya Cordner, Maylee Attin-Johnson, Ahkeela Mollon, Arin King and other senior team members who have paved the way for upcoming women players through their exploits for the National Senior Team and he pledged his commitment along with the rest of the TTFA appointed staff members to continue the drive towards developing women’s football in Trinidad and Tobago.

According to reliable sources, the composition of the tournament has changed.

For starters, the tournament now includes Venezuela.

Also instead of the originally contemplated five teams from UNCAF, the number is down to three (Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua) because Guatemala and Honduras will not participate. Panama and Belize were never slated to attend.

Within CFU, it appears that BVI have dropped out, as have Cuba ... and that SVG are in.

Total number of teams: 23.

Trinidad & Tobago have been grouped with the big guns. The group: T&T, Mexico, USA, Haiti and Dominican Republic.

Kick-off is versus the USA on August 9 versus the US ... 9:00am EST.

Under 15 Girls maintain focus ahead of CONCACAF Championship
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s National Under 15 Girls Team head coach Marlon Charles is pushing on with the preparation of his team ahead of their opening game of the CONCACAF Under 15 Girls Championship against the United States on August 9th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney in Orlando.

T&T will join twenty two other nations at the tournament which is designed to encourage development as well as promote competitiveness and fair play among the teams.

Charles currently has a squad of forty players, including six from Tobago in training for over a month now with sessions taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and double sessions on Saturdays and Sundays, all at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar.

T&T have been grouped with the US, Mexico, Haiti and Dominican Republic.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for these young women. This is the kind of games required from now in their youthful stage that will do the girls a world of good,” Charles told TTFA Media on Saturday.

“It will teach them a lot about competitiveness and the game at an international level and they will get that experience first hand from very early. These teams such as USA and Mexico have a structured program which we can learn from and I am excited about that,” Charles added.

“Of course we will be going there to compete as best as we can but there are a lot of benefits we can look forward to in this tournament.”

Charles complimented the efforts of the TTFA and his team staff in trying to get the team up to scratch before the competition.

“I think the effort right now is good. We are getting the opportunity to train at Larry Gomes on a proper surface which is good for us. We were a bit late in starting but we are not going to make excuses. This is all about the team and the players right now. Jinelle (James) and they are doing the best they can right now to get the team prepared,” Charles said.

Charles, who has also coached T&T at the senior level, added that he would be preparing his players mentally for the challenge of facing the US and Mexico in their first international outing.

“My approach at this time is to not talk about their first game being against the USA. We don’t want to have a mindset of fear from now. We are focusing on our basics and our preparations. These girls have a lot to learn about the game and we are trying to ensure they stay focused on continue enjoying what they are doing,” said Charles who has Desiree Sarjeant and Joanne-Daniel as his assistants with Ricarda Nelson as the team manager. The goalkeeper coach is Glennon Foncette.

Meantime, United States U-15 Girls Head Coach Mark Carr also spoke of his team’s excitement ahead of the competition.

“We are excited about this incredible opportunity to complete against the top opponents from the CONCACAF region along with Venezuela.

“This competition gives us the chance to showcase what we have learned in the first 18 months of this U-15 Girls’ National Team cycle and it will highlight where we are as a group and also where we need to improve before entering the U-17 World Cup cycle.”

T&T finished third at the Championship in 2014, defeating Honduras on penalties.

Teams will be divided into three groups of five teams and two groups of four teams. All of the group winners, plus the second place teams from the five-team groups, will advance to the quarterfinals.

Canada is the defending champion, after defeating Haiti 4-1 in penalties, in the title match of the 2014 edition, played in the Cayman Islands.

Competing Teams

CFU (16): Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Santa Lucia, St Vincent & Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, US Virgin Islands

UNCAF (3): Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua

North America (3): Canada, Mexico, United States

CONMEBOL (1): Venezuela

I will like to see the game stats. Let me guess 90% possession and over 50 shots on goal.

2016 CONCACAF U-15 Girls’ Championship
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – Orlando, Florida, USA
Match Recaps – August 9, 2016

GROUP A

United States 22, Trinidad & Tobago 0
Samantha Meza (1’, 24’) struck for the first of her two goals in the first minute and the United States never looked in a 22-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago.  Nine different Americans got on the scoresheet led by Gabrielle Robinson (13’, 22’, 31’, 32’, 67’), who netted a tournament-record five goals.  Jamaica’s Jody Brown held the previous mark of four in a 9-0 victory against Anguilla on August 9, 2014.  Payton Linnehan (49’, 59’, 63’) added three goals, all in the second half.  T&T conceded one own-goal in each half.

Mexico 2, Haiti 0
In one of the day’s hardest fought contests, Mexico edged 2014 runner-up Haiti, 2-0.  Alison Gonzalez (9’) scored early for the Tricolor, while Alejandra Diaz (59’) netted an insurance goal in the second half.

GROUP B

Canada 6, Venezuela 0
Six different players accounted for the goals as Canada opened defense of its crown with a 6-0 win over Venezuela.  Aaliyah Scott (9’), Maya Ladhani (20’) and Jayde Riviere (31’) scored in the first half, while Julianne Vallerand (41’), Mya Jones (49’) and Teni Akindoju (61’) netted after the break.  With five substitutions, Canada featured 16 of their 18 players in the opening match. From that lineup, 10 players were making their international youth debuts.  Jones (1 goal) and Akindoju (2) also found the back of the net in the competition’s 2014 edition.

Costa Rica 2, Jamaica 1
In arguably the best game of the day, Priscilla Chinchilla scored in the 60th minute to give Costa Rica a 2-1 win over Jamaica.  The game-winning goal came when the Reggae Boyz were short a player, who was receiving treatment for an injury suffered just minutes earlier.    Carmen Marin (12’) gave the Ticas a 1-0 lead on an effort from distance, while Shannia Harris (53’) equalized near the midpoint of the second half.

GROUP C

Puerto Rico 4, St. Lucia 1
Puerto Rico scored all of its goals in the first half on the way to a 4-1 win over St. Lucia.  Isabelle Rivera (3’, 9’) netted a brace before 10 minutes had passed, while Thalia Perez (17’) and Yarelia Maldonado (28’) struck for a goal each.  St. Lucia looked more dangerous in the second half and was rewarded for its persistence with a well-taken goal by Krysan St. Louis (50’).

Nicaragua 1, Grenada 1
In an exciting encounter that left both teams happy at the final whistle, Nicaragua and Grenada played to a 1-1 stalemate.  After a scoreless first half, the chances became more plentiful.  The Grenadians, a side that contains many of the same players that hosted and competed in the 2016 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, took a 1-0 lead thanks to a calm finish by Cassie Rennie (45’).  Four minutes later, the determined Nicaraguans equalized through Yorcelly Humphreys (49’).  It was the only draw of the day.

You are not surprised by the 20+ goal outcome? Why? Typically, disparity in quality is manifested by a score half that number of goals.

22 zip. Ouch that hurts bad. The last time I heard of a score like that pertaining to TT is 1967. QRC 22 vs ASJA 0. Meh Breds, Marlon Charles go get plenty flak for this.

No I am not surprised. The score is good representation of the gap between T&T and a powerhouse like America in Womens football, even at the youth level.

That score is out of the range of our historical experience with the US. I don't want to comment prematurely beyond that. Let's see how the group pans out.

I happy for the win against DR but we all know the truth behind beating those very weak Caribbean teams. These wins cannot be used as a measuring stick to measure if the team learned from the defeat against the US because these Caribbean nations play very poorly.

The gulf between Germany and Fiji is immense, yet getting to "22" would still be a hill to climb for the Germans. Granted, there are nuances with respect to women's and girls' football ... Germany defeated Fiji 10-0 after taking their foot off the gas around 75'.

Unless I am mistaken, we finished 3rd at the previous edition of this tournament. We should be making strides.

Venezuela is currently at the pinnacle of U17 football (girls) in South America. Both this cycle and the previous one. My hope was that the present VEN U15 crop would have reflected that, but they have suffered. Great invitees nonetheless. Good to have them at this event. However, I can't ignore how El Salvador approached its preparation with its U15 girls. It may not be reasonable to expect one cycle to represent the fortunes of the next cycle. Look Mexico, defending gold medallists at the Olympics have to say adiós to Rio.

With players learning the game, we hadda break that 22 down into what stemmed from unforced errors and what stemmed from being outclassed. And what stemmed from confusion. And what stemmed from ignorance.

Not an excuse. Just the reality.

Blame The Coach. It is always  a learning process. In all fairness to Shabazz{ I never thought I would say this} he did recognize our weakness  in the first half of play and changed the strategy for the second half. He would have played five in the back and go for the counter,
Congrats to the little ladies for bouncing back Shows character and just maybe if we keep this squad after this tournament , we can talk about the future.

Lol. I had to laugh when I see that it stemmed from ignorance. Not laughing at you. But it would have been a lot of ignorance to reach 22. That amount of ignorance is bone chilling.

2016 CONCACAF U-15 Girls’ Championship
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – Orlando, Florida, USA
Match Recaps – Wednesday, August 10, 2016

GROUP A

Mexico 0, United States 1

The United States may not have come close to equaling the 22-goal mark as it did against Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday, but it accomplished something equally important – not allowing the opponent to score. Mia Fishel (60’) scored the game’s only in the second half of a 1-0 win over Mexico, which was on top of its game throughout the morning. Gabrielle Robinson, who scored a tournament record five goals in the victory over T&T, didn’t start, but she entered as a 51st minute substitute.

Trinidad & Tobago 4, Dominican Republic 0

A gutsy Trinidad & Tobago side rebounded from Tuesday’s 22-0 loss to the USA with a 4-0 win over the Dominican Republic. After Annika Daniel (2’) put T&T ahead early, Aaliyah Prince (55’ pen, 64’, 69’ pen) extended the lead by exploding for three second-half goals.

GROUP B

Costa Rica 0, Canada 2

In a tightly-contested match, Canada got a goal in each half to down Costa Rica, 2-0. Sidney Kennedy (24’) and Jordyn Huitema (55’) netted on each side of the break. The Canadians posted a second consecutive shutout. Huitema, who finished coolly off a splendid through ball by substitute Aaliyah Scott, played in the 2014 edition of the U-15 competition and the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship contested earlier this year in Grenada.

Venezuela 1, El Salvador 2

All the goals were scored in the second half as El Salvador earned a 2-1 win over guest-side Venezuela. Lesly Calderon (40’, 53’) was the offensive standout, striking twice within a 13-minute stretch to a give the Central Americans a 2-0 lead. Maria Cazorla (68’) halved the deficit, but despite its best efforts, Venezuela found the Salvadoran defense difficult to crack a second time.

GROUP C

Nicaragua 1, Puerto Rico 4

Dynamic Puerto Rico jumped out to a 3-0 lead within 19 minutes on the way to a 4-1 win over Nicaragua. Four different players accounted for the Puerto Rican goals, with Yarielis Maldonado (7’), Maria Colon (10’), Isabelle Rivera (19’) and Gabriela Torres (67’) getting their names on the scoresheet. After the initial barrage, Nicaragua edged into the match and were rewarded for their persistence as Dayana Calero (65’) made it 3-1.

2016 CONCACAF U-15 Girls’ Championship
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – Orlando, Florida, USA
Match Recaps – Thursday, August 11, 2016

GROUP B

Canada 5, Jamaica 0

Sydney Kennedy (23’, 51’) scored two goals and Canada earned a 5-0 win over Jamaica. The result ensured that the Canadians would end the day at the top of the table and confirmed their place in the quarterfinals. Teni Akindoju (31’) and Jordyn Huitema (45’ pen) notched their second goals of the competition, while Caitlin Shaw (57’) netted her first.

El Salvador 3, Costa Rica 3

Maria Paula Salas (32’, 51’ pen, 64’) struck for a hat-trick and scored the game’s last goal to help Costa Rica to a 3-3 draw with El Salvador in an all-Central American affair. The Salvadorans took a 1-0 lead through Maggi Segovia, but Salas answered five minutes later. Lesly Calderon (47’, 52’), who netted a pair of goals in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Venezuela, put El Salvador ahead 2-1 and equalized at 2-2. The final word, however, belonged to the outstanding Salas.

GROUP D

Barbados 9, US Virgin Islands 0

Marissa King (22’, 66’) scored the first and last goals as Barbados posted a 9-0 win over the US Virgin Islands. The Barbadians were buoyed by a three-goal explosion from Tiana Sealy (32’, 51’, 63’). Caitlin Padmore (24’, 49’) added a brace, while Rowland Kirton-Browne (38’) and Asha Stevenson contributed with a goal each.

Curacao 3, Anguilla 0

Lindsey Hart (66’, 70’+2) scored twice late and Curacao outlasted a spirited Anguilla side, 3-0. Staygin Stephens (35’) struck just before halftime to give the Curacaoans a 1-0 lead.

GROUP E

Bermuda 3, Cayman Islands 0

In an intriguing encounter, Bermuda topped the Cayman Islands, 3-0. The Bermudians took a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals by Adia Gibbons (3’) and Leilanni Nesbeth (34’). Nia Christopher (60’) completed the scoreline, using the outside of her right foot to net off a cross whisked in from the left by Jaden Masters. The Cayman Islands, however, looked dangerous offensively throughout the morning, only to be thwarted on numerous occasions by Bermuda’s impressive defense.

Antigua & Barbuda 1, Bahamas 4

Tyra McKenzie (14’, 70’+1 pen) netted a brace and the Bahamas earned a 4-1 win over Antigua & Barbuda. The Bahamians also got goals from Gabrielle Simms (16’) and Mickell Yallop (65’). Zolique Samuels (4’) gave Antigua a 1-0 lead before five minutes has passed.

Rennie filled with Grenada pride at CU15G
CONCACAF

She may be soft spoken, but Grenada’s Cassie Rennie has made a large impression on the 2016 CONCACAF U-15 Girls’ Championship, which is currently being contested at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The 14-year-old midfielder scored her team’s only goal in the 45th minute of a 1-1 draw with Nicaragua in the tournament opener for each on Tuesday.

“I was afraid, but I just relaxed and kicked the ball in,” Rennie told CONCACAF.com, when asked what she was thinking immediately prior to and after her shot. “It was challenging, but I did my best and I scored the goal.

“I was excited…I didn’t know what to do.”

The goal was not only big for Rennie, but also for the entire women’s program at the Grenada Football Association (GFA). Earlier this year, the GFA hosted the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship and the roster of the team competing in that tournament contained many of the same players now in Orlando.

The U17s lost each of its three games without finding the back of the net.

That experience gained by playing against older and higher-level competition, though, was expected to serve the young Grenadians well in the future. Part of that promise became reality on a hot and humid central Florida morning. For a squad that has been together for more than a year, the significance of Rennie’s goal inspired optimism.

“We did our best, but we could have scored more goals,” she said with a smile that revealed a hunger to accomplish even more on the football pitch.

The U15s appreciate the opportunity that they’ve worked hard to earn. Their CONCACAF journey means everything and they want to give back.

“[The players] love it because they get to go to other countries to participate for Grenada and make Grenada proud,” finished Rennie.

They are certainly doing that and more.
