Burger flippers does make more $$ dan many rookie MLS players.

Dat said....I hope this decision doesn't haunt Mr Farrier in time to come.

FYI, in this case, money did not fuel his decision to walk away from the contract. He was actually offered a decent contract (i.e. not a "ordinary" rookie contract).

This is my top 14

Mexico
Honduras
USA
Costa Rica
El Salvador
Trinidad and Tobago
Guatemala
Panama
Jamaica
Haiti
Cuba
Martinique
Puerto Rico
Canada

Mexico, USA, Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador all have very competitive football leagues that have great Television viewing/following. I personally was able to witness the Honduran and El Salvadorian professional  leagues games and I can tell you it is very well organized and competitive from top to bottom. From stadium being sold out, to media storming players for interviews after games, to tight security in the stadium, to supporters war after the game outside and in buses.

Guatemala league is OK but the only two main teams in the league is Municipal and Comunicaciones. The rest of the teams are garbage.

Canada league is a waste of time. It's called the CPSL. If you going to play in that league, you might as well go and plant rice in Guyana. It's a semi-professional league. I had the opportunity to see Durham Flames and St. Catharines Wolves in action a couple years ago. Talk about Sunday league setting to the fullest. The 3  professional teams over in Canada (Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps & Toronto F.C.) do not participate in the CPSL. The play in the USL 1st division (USA 2nd division) and MLS respectively.

Football / Vying Pro League teams know Status tomorrow
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:23:33 AM »
Tomorrow, the 4 vying Pro League teams for the 2009 season would know their faith.

The two Tobago teams (St Clair Coaching School & 1976 FC Phoenix) were trying to get airfare assistance from the Tobago House of Assembly. This is be their biggest setback.

F.C. South End and Marabella Flames are in a bit of a better situation but still needed to show proof that they would have been able to survive an entire season.

I heard through a reliable source that it looks more than likely, that the two latter teams, would be granted permission to play in the league this year.

Has he recovered from de head laceration he suffered last October?

I would think so, because he played in a couple pre-season games with the Islanders this year.

allyuh cah blame nun of the players for what happen. pressure is buss pipe. who/what cause the pressure tactics. Only Maturana should be blamed for what happened, espescially when he see all tha pressure we was under in the last few minutes, we had no more subs but he coulda atleast make Jones drop back into midfield to help out. Is not like Jones doh know how to defend after all he was a rightback for Connection, anyway thas that what happened happen, say thank goodness we eh loss them had rel chances if they had a quality foward say like a JOHN they woulda win... If we continue to play like that we gonna find it hard to even score against better teams because that kinda pressure you see in the last few minutes going to be constant against a mexico or the states... Bring back WHITELY!!!!!! and finally some body please teach Daniel how to tackle

Your 1st post I see, no wonder. Welcome!

I personally don't think we can blame Maturana; at least not totally. After all, the players on the team are supposedly our best. I mean, tell me who can be replaced and do an extraordinary job than the other?

Who do we have better than our strikers? Our midfield was possibly our best line up. Only dubious position was that in Silvio and Edwards. Those two players can play, but just wasn't consistent.

But the things that happen on the field, is in the hands of the players. Only the players had control of holding up the ball properly, controlling the ball cleanly, making a proper pass, making a proper cross, keeping control of the game when we were 2 goals up, marking and tracking properly. Is it Maturana fault that the best possible players available to the team cannot do this?

PLAYERS NEED TO BE HELD MORE ACCOUNTABLE.

« on: February 11, 2009, 11:34:05 PM »
Players need to be held more accountable. I am not going to comment on the coaching right now but I have to comment on our players.

With all due respect, I think El Salvador deserve to win the game. They kept possession well, they kept the pressure on Trinidad and created decent opportunities. If you'll recalled, their players would sprint back into position after each attack, sprint to every ball that went out of play and kept pushing forward for goals. They showed that they wanted to win.

I don't think there was one point in the game where we made AT LEAST 10 passes within ourselves.

I don't think we had at least 3-4 consistent crosses from either side all game.

I don't think we looked composed during the game (even when we were 2 goals up).

We had top class players unable to control the ball properly....unable to hold up the ball effectively....marking poorly, and making unforced error (especially in defense). These are signs of panic.

I was disappointed when Dwight allowed Stern to take the penalty (especially knowing that the score was only 2-0). You would have never seen Zidane giving up those responsibilities to no one else on his team during his playing tenure (unless the game was secured). You will never see Deco or any other top class player who are quality in penalties/free kicks give up those types of responsibilities ESPECIALLY taken into the consideration the score.

Now, there is only so much a coach can do. But the players had these things in their control and was unable to do it.

Fortunately, we came out with a point away from home. I think this needed to happen now. Let's hope things get better as we come closer to our next encounter.

The US currency has been the official currency of El Salvador since 2001. It is used Nationwide.

However, the cost of living is extremely high in El Salvador.

Nevertheless, they pay their professional players in El Salvador very well. Especially CD Fas; where the lowest paid player gets $1500US monthly and highest paid player getting as much as $7000US a month. This was the figures 4 years ago. It may have gone up or gone down (I don't know).

Warner gives Nigeria April ulitimatum
Source: - Trinidad Guardian

FIFA Vice President Jack Warner has given Nigeria until April to implement the critical changes required to successfully host the U-17 World Cup. Warner made the comments at a press conference on Friday night in Abuja following a ten day inspection tour of the African nation. While speaking to members of the media, the FIFA VP stated that only two out of the nine stadia he and his team inspected are ready to host the world tournament later this year.

“Various elements must be present at each venue, and these elements are not limited to the physical infrastructure of the facilities, but the surrounding environment but also be World Cup ready. We inspect not only the stadium, but the surrounding health facilities, infrastructural development, media outlets. I must report from what we have seen only two venues have met the FIFA stipulated requirements” Warner told the media.

Warner and his delegation will be meeting at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Thursday to discuss the recently concluded trip. “A report must be presented to FIFA on what we have seen. This is my fourth visit to Nigeria relating to the U-17, I have made several recommendations to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) on what must be done. We have been given assurances that the required work will be completed. I will return in April, and at that time serious decisions will have to be made if these recommendations are not followed.” The FIFA VP went on to say.

During the inspection tour Warner met with Nigeria’s Vice President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan and several members of Government. “Your government has given me the assurance that when I return in April I will be pleasantly surprised. I know that the Vice President has gotten involved in preparation activates and I am hopeful that these promises will materialise.”

Nigeria was selected to host the U-17 in 2006 and the African nation successfully hosted the Youth Tournament in 1999. “I have seen what Nigeria can do and in my heart I know you are a country of great potential and surprises. But the same mix used to host a tournament in 1999 cannot be applied in 2009. FIFA has made several changes to the rules and policies which govern these tournaments. I know that Nigeria has what it takes and I am optimistic that when I return in April you would have shown the world what I know you are capable of doing.” Warner added.

As he walked out of the packed press conference, the FIFA VP smiled and said thank you to his hosts the LOC organisers and the Nigerian people for their hospitality. Warner, who heads the FIFA Youth Committee, will now be preparing for an inspection of his home country
An eight member inspection team is expected to arrive in T&T on Carnival Monday. The team will assess this country’s ability to host the U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2010.

“There are stipulated policies and guidelines which govern the hosting of all FIFA tournaments and the same questions which have been asked of the Nigerian officials are the same questions which will put before the organisers in Trinidad and Tobago.”

Football / El Salvador hopes stalled by FIFA

FIFA block El Salvador recruit
Source: -Trinidad Express

delayed: Arturo Alvarez

The much-anticipated debut of San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Arturo Alvarez in the El Salvador national team will have to wait until FIFA, the governing body for world football, rules whether he is eligible to play for the country of birth of his parents.

Therefore, the highly-rated 23-year-old US-born Alvarez will not be in the squad on February 11 when El Salvador host Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match for both teams in the CONCACAF final round of 2010 World Cup qualifying.

Because El Salvador have very few overseas-based players, media in the Central American country have been abuzz with news of the recruitment of Alvarez and another American citizen, Edwin Miranda, to the national team.

Alvarez was born in Houston, Texas, and played for the Americans at every age group at youth level. But with native Salvadorean parents, he qualifies to play for the Central American nation.

However, just ahead of the opening match in the UNCAF Nations Cup last Thursday, Rodrigo Calvo, president of the El Salvador Football Association, told daily newspaper El Diario de Hoy that Alvarez cannot yet be incorporated into the national team until FIFA gives its position on the case.

Calvo had successfully secured an El Salvador passport for Alvarez after just four days.

"The player has already received his Salvadorean passport, but will not be registered until FIFA give us a response in the case...which will not be before February 11," Calvo said.

However, El Salvador's top football official said he expected a positive verdict "unless the United States say anything against it".

Meanwhile, information coming out of the USA is that Alvarez will be denied the opportunity to join Los Cuscatlecos.

Alvarez represented the United States at the Under-20 level in the qualification tournament for the 2005 FIFA Youth World Championship in a squad that included current senior American internationals Freddy Adu, Charlie Davies, Sasha Kljestan and Danny Szetela.

Alvarez played for the USA under Sigi Schmid on two occasions in the 2005 CONCACAF Under-20 qualifying tournament, a 69-minute start against Costa Rica and a 13-minute appearance off the bench against Panama.

He was also on the bench when the USA whipped Trinidad and Tobago 6-1 in their opening match of the tournament four years ago.

While the Americans don't really want Alvarez for their senior team, they are also not eager to allow El Salvador to strengthen their line-up with a skillful, left-footed attacking midfielder, having to meet the US later on in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

And because he is trying to play for El Salvador, Alvarez has come in for severe criticism in the United States.

Soccer By Ives, voted Best Soccer Blog of 2008 by US Soccer, reported a high-ranking source at US Soccer as confirming that Alvarez can only play for the United States.

The Americans argue that with Alvarez being 23 years old, he can no longer apply to switch national teams.

According to FIFA guidelines, a player can only make the change before his 21st birthday.

Alvarez's case is not unlike that of Notre Dame midfielder Aaron Maund, who played for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Championship in South Korea, but is now a member of the USA Under-20 team which trained in T&T last week.

Unlike Alvarez, Maund was young enough to make the switch. And so El Salvador's only choice now is to hope for an exception from FIFA, or else go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

But El Salvador's other USA-based recruit, Puerto Rico Islanders defensive midfielder Edwin Miranda, has already been incorporated in their national team and played in El Salvador's 4-1 victory over Belize last Saturday and a 2-0 defeat to Honduras on Monday night in the UNCAF Nations Cup.

Miranda's case was more clear-cut as he was born in El Salvador. Miranda left El Salvador 16 years ago when an 11 -year-old and grew up in Los Angeles, USA.

The 27-year-old is delighted to have finally played for El Salvador.

"The truth is that I feel good. I'm trying to connect to the group because they have been working a long time. That is what is hard for me. Each day the work was different and strong. The coaches are good people, I have tried very well. To come from the United States to El Salvador after 16 years, that's the hardest part for me because most players have enough time playing together," Miranda said.

"I am trying to fit in as quickly as possible. Being in the selection is a great motivation to represent my country, this is something different. Any player would like to be here wearing the shirt of the country."

Cleveland inks Stewart and Oka
Source: - Cleveland City Stars News Release - www.clevelandcitystars.com

CLEVELAND, OH -- The Cleveland City Stars announced the return of Ryan Stewart and the addition of Portland's Arsene Oka for the 2009 season.

Ryan Stewart will return to Cleveland for his second season after re-signing over the weekend. The club also reached an agreement with an experienced and internationally recognized player in Arsene Oka from the Ivory Coast. Both contracts are pending U.S. Soccer approval and international clearance.

Stewart's rookie season finished well in title runRyan Stewart enters his second season with the City Stars after putting in a fine rookie season in 2008. The native of Mayaro, Trinidad and Tobago totaled 602 minutes in 11 matches last season and recorded four goals and one assist. Stewart came on strong down the stretch, notching all nine points in the season's final seven matches and chipped in an assist in the City Star's first round playoff victory over the Western Mass Pioneers.

Stewart came to Cleveland after a distinguished college career at Lindsay Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. The shifty Stewart was a three-time NAIA All-American selection and the NAIA Region XI Player of the Year in 2007. Stewart amassed 15 goals and 5 assists as a senior and ranks 4th all-time at Lindsay Wilson College with 53 career goals.

"The Cleveland City Stars are thrilled to have Ryan Stewart back for 2009. He came in a little late last season because he was finishing college and he struggled a bit with injury, but the fans of Cleveland saw flashes of brilliance," said Cleveland City Stars Executive Director Aaron Tredway. "He's very crafty on the ball and he can break teams down with his technical ability. I think he's a rising star."

Arsene Oka comes to Cleveland after playing last season with the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division. The native of Abidjan, Ivory Coast totaled 225 minutes in seven matches with the Timbers last season. Prior to joining Portland, Oka played in MLS with the New England Revolution during the 2006-07 season.

Oka has also represented his country as a member of the Ivory Coast U17, U20, and U23 national teams.

"Arsene is a player that we signed from the Portland Timbers, and he was formerly with the New England Revolution," said Tredway. "He has a lot of pace up the wing and we expect big things from Arsene Oka. This is a good signing for the Cleveland City Stars as Arsene fully believes in the team mission of Serving the City and Changing the World."

City Stars Hold First Set Of Tryouts Over The Weekend

The City Stars held their first round of tryouts over the weekend at NEO Soccer in Parma and it was a rousing success. The group of tryout players was among the most talented the City Stars have ever hosted and the field included players from around the world with the Netherlands, Japan, England and Canada being represented. There was also a great fan turnout for the evening session's exhibition match with the select team from NEO Soccer.

"The team would like to thank everybody for coming out," said Cleveland City Stars Director of Soccer Operations Kevin Carpenter. "Its always encouraging to see the support for the team and have a chance to meet and get to know such great players from Ohio and around the world. We hope to repeat the success at our next tryout in February."

The second set of tryouts are schedule for February 13th at Krenzler Field on the campus of Cleveland State University. The first session will start at 10 a.m. with the second session taking place at 7 p.m. The evening session will again feature an exhibition match.

U-20s beaten, seniors play 1st game today
Source: - Trinidad Express

Trinidad and Tobago's National Under 20 footballers fell short in their opening training match of their trip to Brazil, going down 2-0 to Brasilis FC's Under 20 team on Wednesday in Sao Paolo.

The Zoran-Vranes coached team, there on a ten-day tour as they prepare for the final round of qualification for the 2009 FIFA World Youth Championship in T&T from March 5-15, gave up goals in the ninth and 46th minutes.

They next face Palmeiras' Under 23 team today and Vranes will be hoping for a better result despite his feeling that the locals gave a decent account of themselves in their opening training fixture.

Meanwhile, Russell Latapy is expected to lace his boots up and join the action in the T&T senior side's opening training match today when they face Argentino Juniors from 9:30am (7:30am TT time).

The fixture was changed after the host officials confirmed to the T&T management that the visitors will face Juniors at their training complex and will instead play Quilmes later on the tour.

« on: January 21, 2009, 11:59:47 AM »
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the coach and his technical staff were responsible for preparing the players including their match fitness?

Yuh wrong.  At the Senior Men's National team level in the modern game, it's not the responsibility of the coach or his staff to "get players fit".  That's the responsibility of their respective clubs.  For those without clubs, the onus is on them to acquire the desired level of fitness to compete in the international arena.

As for those who say play more international matches to get players fit, isn't that the purpose of this Argentine tour?  And even self, I wonder if daz de coach job too?  On top of coachin de team, he must arrange dey international matches, get the players fit, find clubs for them, and bring down players who contracted to foreign clubs.  And oh yeah...if de foreign clubs doh want to let de players go because is outside official FIFA tournament dates, dem jes have to humble because de National coach say dey have to come.

I guess he should be wipin de players ass when dey put dong a pile too.

 :D

At the professional level and/or international level, coaches have limited time on their hands to get players fit. Their schedule is so demanding with games, that they have to be MAINLY tactically and technically prepared for each encounter. Each player is therefore responsible to keep his level of fitness high (whether is means playing pick up games, as well as, training individually when possible and putting in the work during each training session to maintain a certain level of fitness).

When they come into pre-season camp or summons to National duty they should be fit and ready to get right into the playing and adjusting to tactical ideas the coach may have. Rather than have to spend 2-3 week to do fitness work to get players prepared.

Corneal will not travel to Argentina with the senior team and remains in Trinidad to command the national under-17 team. The TTFF are yet to say whether Latapy's inclusion might make Corneal's reassignment permanent.

Well Corneal, you fight and fight to get rid off Wim and his staff? Hold the faith! lol

My assumption is that the TTFF will eventually fire Maturana during the World Cup final round of qualifiers (more so if there are any more coaching blunders) and give Latapy the head coach position.

MLS, have cut the reserve league. This was in an effort to save the league some money. Neaves is MLS material. Him not being in the MLS combine doesn't mean much. He can still have a shot at it. However, not through the supplemental draft. That is no longer needed since there will be no more reserve league.

Also, NFL & NBA has already made it clear that they will be cutting up to 125 jobs (each) in an effort to save the league some $50 million.

PANAMA CITY -- Osei Telesford and Fabrice Noel scored first-half goals and Puerto Rico held on for a 2-2 draw with Tauro FC on Wednesday, earning the Islanders a place in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

The result puts two teams in the final eight from the United Soccer Leagues. Last week, the Montreal Impact clinched its place in the two-leg knockout round that begins in February.

Steele helped guide Puerto Rico in critical group finalePuerto Rico and Tauro both finished with eight points in Group D, but the Islanders beat Tauro 2-1 in the first round and also had more away goals. With Municipal set to play Santos Laguna Thursday with a chance to pull level with Puerto Rico and Tauro, the result of the match will be meaningless for the Guatemalan side as the Islanders lead the trio in away goals in their matches against one another (Puerto Rico 4, Tauro 3, Municipal 2).

The Islanders, who after winning their first two games in the Group Stage, had lost two straight and finished winless in their last four. They went ahead in the 16th minute when Telesford nodded in a free kick at the far post after it had been tipped on its way through the penalty area. It was the third goal in the Champions League for Telesford, who scored one goal in 19 games for Puerto Rico in helping it to the USL First Division championship game.

Noel scored his second of the Champions League 13 minutes later, running on to a ball out of midfield from Jonathan Steele, rounding goalkeeper Willington Dominguez and scoring into an open net.

Puerto Rico dominated possession for nearly the entire first half until Brunette Hay converted a penalty kick for Tauro in the 43rd. Hay, who leads Tauro with 11 goals in 15 games this season in the Panamanian league, scored his fourth to climb among the leaders in Champions League and set the tone for the second half.

Tauro began much more quickly and created several dangerous-looking opportunities, pinning Puerto Rico in its own half for much of the first 15 minutes. Puerto Rico was able to regain some possession, but Hay scored his second in the 77th, sending a slow, rolling right-footed shot just inside the far post.

The Panamanian club was forced to replaced Dominguez in the 33rd after he appeared to injure his right wrist making a sliding save in the ninth minute. He received treatment on the field, holding up play for five minutes but gave way to Aimar Alvarado.
