Disappointing but not surprising. The coach himself said his players were limited before he left. Only a few games of preparation so it was expected.

Guatemala tops Trinidad in U-17 opener.
CONCACAF.COM.

Diego Raymundo struck for two goals and Guatemala defeated 10-man Trinidad & Tobago 4-1 in the opening match of the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship (CU17) on Friday at the Estadio Francisco Morazan.

The result gave the Guatemalans an early advantage in Group A with USA-Cuba and Honduras-Jamaica set to close out the tripleheader later in the day.

It was an offensive explosion from a side that was shutout four times in its last five matches in the competition.  In fact, the output ranked as Guatemala’s best ever in a CU17 game.

The Central Americans were able to capitalize on some uncertainty in the Trinidadian defense and, as a result, went ahead in just the second minute. David Ramos delivered a corner kick from the right side that found the head of Fernando Fuentes. The Trinidadians could not react quickly enough to clear and with three teammates prepared to score, Raymundo was first to jab the ball home.

Seven minutes later, Guatemala took advantage of another defensive miscue to double its lead.  Victor Valdez lofted a right-sided free kick into the box with his left foot. The ball bounced in front of goalkeeper Levi Fernandez, who appeared to think that it would be headed away, and into the back of the net.

In the 39th minute, the Caribbean side was reduced a player, when Shirwin Noel was shown a straight red card for a high foot into the chest Stefan Behrens.

Despite being down a player, Trinidad responded in a positive fashion, getting on the scoreboard through a brilliant individual effort by Keston Julien in the 45th minute. The 16-year-old defender burst into the left side of the Guatemalan box, weaving his way through the defense, before drilling a left-footed shot into the far-side netting from eight-yards out.

Trinidadian joy was short-lived, however, as Abel Lemus restored Guatemala’s two-goal lead in the second minute of stoppage time.  The Municipal youth standout intercepted an errant pass and raced down the middle into the box, before chipping from 12 yards beyond Fernandez’s reach.

Both teams emerged from the break in attacking moods, but – thanks to some good fortune -- Guatemala got the goal that provided the margin of difference in the 54th minute.  Fernandez came far out of the box to make a clearance on a high, hopeful ball down the middle, but was not successful.  Raymundo got in between two defenders to gain possession and beat Tekay Hoyce to tally from close range.

Trinidad nearly halved the deficit in the 76th minute, only for Hoyce to head off the left post after Noah Powder’s corner kick went through the hands of goalkeeper Gilder Lemus.

Guatemala returns to action on Monday against Jamaica, while Trinidad will look to bounce when it takes on the United States.

NOTES: Guatemala was the last team to qualify for the competition after prevailing over El Salvador in a two-legged playoff, 2-1 on aggregate.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

True also. I did not mentioned that aspect of Cuba. Played well but a bit naive. There a short midfielder for them. He was substituted later. Good lil player.

Not the start we needed, have to put this one behind us as a big game next. A quick recap:

1. Referee was ridiculous to give a straight red card or even a foul on to our defender.
2. We were reasonably organized but shocking players by defense and keeper.

I am still positive on this group because we can see they have ability, however defense and goal keeper have to improve.

This is not an attack on this keeper but after watching the U20 in Jamaica and some of those keeper errors. Its obvious, we need to improve everywhere but especially in keeper training and preparation. I don't know if our keepers are short, tall, slim, overweight, tactically unaware but since they are young these errors have to improve. The keeper trainer/coach need to put some work in to prepare for the next game.

Furthermore, nationally we have to recognize its too important a position to not provide some specialized, focused and exclusive time for keepers. Bring in some quality coaches, maybe Shaka can come work with these boys mentally to help them to play at the higher level.

Let's get ready for the USA, we are not out of the tournament. GO Warriors

I am hating on this team's performance right now. As far as I am concerned this tournament is over for this group and the one to come after them. Yuh cannot plant corn and expect peas. Yeah, the players were indecisive and it cost them but the bottom line is they were poorly coached and poorly prepared. Who are they beating? The USA? Honduras maybe? They are the third best team from Concacaf, behind Cuba and Jamaica. If you liked how Cuba played against the USA, you are going to hate how they are going to play against Trinidad. They, Trinidad, may end up going 0 - 5 in this tournament.

After seeing this kid's reaction to getting a red card for stomping that kid in his chest told me he didn't think he did anything wrong. I expect him to do it again. It should have been two red cards instead of one.
Onto another issue. How can Sancho say the ttfa and Cooper did an excellent job of preparing this team? That to me is propaganda on a Jack Warner level.
So now, just sit back and listen to the familiar rhetoric coming out of this camp. Pride and country. Hope. We will bounce back for the next game. La de da.

When the kids win, the friggin ttfa takes credit for the win and blames it on the development program. When the kids lose the silence is deafening. No accountability, no responsibility, no reformulating of strategies to correct the wrongs, no culpability, no reflection, no questions, no shame in their game. You saw it last year for the girls u17 & u20s and you saw it for the boys u20s and if you pay close attention you will see it again.
So for me, that performance yesterday is a reflection on the kids, the coach and his staff and the ongoing saga of the ttfa. People should resign.

As I said before, the defense has more holez than Swiss cheese, the midfield cannot control the flow of the game because they have no game, the forwards cannot hit the broad side of a barn, and the keeper cannot keep the ball out of his net. You now have 48 hours to fix that. If you don't, this tournament is over.

Good luck, Mr. Phelps.
