Had a feeling she was guna do some damage here and she converted. She was running against a decent line up too and still pulled it off. Just hoping that she has an injury free year and once that happens we'll see some good times. Nice to see KAB congratulate her on twitter too..

Thanks A! Michelle still lagging a bit at the start but she has improved. To see her come through and just let loose with her top end is a thing of beauty. If she can work on getting out with the pack she can get to low 7.0x.

Lalonde leads charge at World Indoors

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Feb 18, 2014 at 8:45 PM ECT
Story Updated: Feb 18, 2014 at 8:51 PM ECT

Lalonde Gordon will lead the charge for Trinidad and Tobago at the March 7-9 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Sopot, Poland.

In a National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) press release, yesterday, Gordon was named on a team of seven athletes selected to represent the Red, White and Black in Poland.

Gordon, a double bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, is at the top of the 2014 world indoor performance list in the men’s 400 metros with a 45.17 seconds clocking.

Gordon is expected to compete in the 400m in Sopot. Either Jereem Richards or Jarrin Solomon will be the other T&T athlete in that event.

Gordon, Richards, Solomon, Ade Alleyne-Forte and Emanuel Mayers have been named for the men’s 4x400m relay.

Michelle-Lee Ahye, who equalled the national women’s 60m record of 7.13 seconds in grabbing gold at the Millrose Games in New York, USA on the weekend, will face the starter in that event in Sopot. Geronne Black has also been selected for the women’s 60m.

TEAM
World Indoor
Men–Lalonde Gordon (400m, 4x400m), Jereem Richards (400m, 4x400m), Jarrin Solomon (400m, 4x400m), Ade Alleyne-Forte (4x400m), Emanuel Mayers (4x400m)
Women–Michelle-Lee Ahye (60m), Geronne Black (60m)
Manager–Paul Voisin, Coach–Charles Joseph

Is Rene Quow injured or just passing on this one?
What's up with Machel Cedenio this year?
I guess with Lendore at school we won't have a full complement for Penn Relays or the World Relay Champs.

It is good to try a few fringe athletes for Penn and World Relays. We know what our core 400m men an do. Let's see how deep this team can be.

Naaa please explain the picking of jereem richards for the World indoors. He is now at South plains junior college where there is a great 400m program. Would it not be more beneficial for his development to let him train instead of heading him off to world indoors.

They would not have picked him unless he made himself available. As can be seen at Carifta Games and Penn Relays, some schools (D1, D2, JC), coaches, or athlete situations allow them to represent country during the competition season. Some athletes may be scholastically ineligible and/or red-shirted for a particular semester/quarter and need to compete "out of school" to stay sharp.

Alleyne-Forte warms up with 400 win
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Feb 24, 2014 at 8:33 PM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago quarter-miler Ade Alleyne-Forte warmed up for the March 7-9 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland with victory at the Virginia Tech Challenge indoor meet in Virginia, USA, on Saturday.

Alleyne-Forte clocked 48.31 seconds to secure top spot in the men’s 400 metres, beating American Christopher Tate (48.39) into second.

Alleyne-Forte trailed Tate at the end of the first lap. The T&T athlete produced a 22.84 seconds 200-metre split, while the American’s split was 22.75. Alleyne-Forte, however, was the stronger of the two athletes in the second half of the race, his 25.47 seconds effort taking him home ahead of Tate (25.64).

Alleyne-Forte has been selected as part of a five-member T&T men’s 4x400m squad for the World Indoors meet. The other four athletes on the mile relay squad are Lalonde Gordon, Jereem Richards, Jarrin Solomon and Emanuel Mayers.

Gordon, the 2014 indoor 400m world leader at 45.17 seconds, will compete in that event in Sopot. Either Richards or Solomon will also face the starter in the individual 400.

Also doing battle for T&T in Sopot will be Michelle-Lee Ahye and Geronne Black in the women’s 60m dash.

Jessica James grabbed women’s 600m gold for Iowa Central Community College at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region XI Indoor Championships, in Iowa, USA, on the weekend. The T&T athlete returned a time of one minute, 35.11 seconds.

At the Panther TuneUp indoor meet, in Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Durell Busby topped the men’s 60m field in 6.95 seconds.

In New Jersey, Chelsi Campbell finished second in the Princeton Indoor Invite women’s 500m event. The University of Delaware student clocked 1:17.47.

And two Saturdays ago, Shawna Fermin got home in 54.36 seconds to strike gold in the women’s 400m at the Pomona-Pitzer All Comers outdoor meet, in California.

No he has not been named, but maybe A/M decided they need him more than we do, and I believe that your college coach has say over what meets you go to when the season is active.

You would think that with all the depth we have in the 400m, we should have a team in the mens 4x400.

6th fastest time in history is huge for Lendore. He should run the magical sub 45 soon.

Texas A&M is paying the man way and training him. In addition, college coaches salary and job depend on the following as priority (i) placing of the program in the NCAAs (indoors and outdoors); (ii) placement of the program within the conference (indoors and outdoors); (iii) number of individual champions at NCAA and conference meets; (iv) placement against arch rivals (in champs or dual meets).

With SEC champs (this weekend) and NCAA indoor champs (March 13/14) so close to the World Indoors (next weekend), the latter becomes a no-go. If the government or NAAA were hypothetically paying for his scholarship then there would be an argument and ratonale for him to go.

The provisional start list for the WIC came out this morning, and we do not have a 4x400m male team on the list. Hmmm...

From Saturday's newspaper:
No T&T 400m relay team for World Indoors
Published:
Saturday, March 1, 2014

National runner Jereem Richards has opted out of his place on the 4x400 metres relay team for the upcoming International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships, leaving management with little choice but to deduce the national contingent to four athletes.

Due to Richards’ withdrawal, Lalonde Gordon, who will compete in the 400m event, has asked to be excused from the 4x400 relay because of groin muscle problems. “Running three rounds of the individual event then two rounds of the relay may be too much for the athlete,” said the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) in a press release.

Along with Gordon, Jarrin Solomon will also challenge the 400m event.  Michelle-Lee Ahye and Geronne Black will both feature in the 60m event. The last member of the entourage is coach and manager Paul Voisin. The IAAF World Indoor Championship will take place in Soport, Poland, from March 7-9.

A medal may be hard to come by depending on Gordon's true fitness/injury concern. Lee Ahye will have to outdo her best to medal with the likes Ahoure, Shelly-Ann Fraser and the Americans in the mix

Your explanation is logical and reasonable. So why can't the NAAA inform the public of the reason for the omission? Communication with the public and fans is always a problem with our organizations.

Lendore delivers
Strikes NCAA gold in 400m

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Mar 17, 2014 at 1:03 AM ECT

Deon Lendore lived up to his billing as favourite, striking gold in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Championship men’s 400 metres event, in New Mexico, USA, late on Saturday.

The Trinidad and Tobago quarter-miler produced a fast 45.21 seconds clocking to capture the title, forcing Americans Vernon Norwood (45.46) and Arman Hall (45.52) to settle for silver and bronze, respectively.

Lendore was also tipped for top honours in the 400m at the 2013 Championships, but was hampered by a calf injury, and finished sixth in the finals. The Texas A&M University student made up for that disappointment on Saturday, capturing the title with an impressive run.

“Being a national champion is the best feeling there is,” said Lendore. “You work so hard to reach the top. When you get there you have to work twice as hard to stay on top, because staying on top is the hardest thing to do. I’m willing to work and do all that needs to be done to be an outdoor national champion as well.”

Wayne Davis II bagged bronze in the men’s 60m hurdles, the T&T/Texas A&M athlete getting to the line in 7.61 seconds. A silver medallist in the event last year, Davis finished third this time around, behind Jamaican Omar McLeod, the winner in 7.58, and US Virgin Islands athlete Eddie Lovett, who also clocked 7.58.

“It’s unacceptable for me to finish third,” said a disappointed Davis. “I didn’t really do what I needed to do out there. I got too close to one of the hurdles and that’s when they got ahead. It’s just really me being able to stay away from those hurdles when I’m ahead or doing well. If I can do that, then the race should be mine.”

Penn State University junior, Steve Waithe disturbed the sand at 15.81 metres to finish sixth in the men’s triple jump.

And in the women’s 800m, another T&T athlete, University of Minnesota’s Alena Brooks was seventh in two minutes, 08.31 seconds.

T&T’s Janeil Bellille produced a 52.22 seconds split on the third leg to help Texas A&M earn bronze in the women’s 4x400m in 3:31.31. University of Oregon (3:27.40) and University of Texas (3:27.42) claimed gold and silver, respectively.

There was disappointment, however, for Texas A&M in the men’s 4x400m. T&T quarter-miler Carlyle Roudette split an impressive 45.40 on the second leg. But Texas A&M dropped the baton on the third leg following a collision with University of Florida, leaving anchorman Lendore with too much ground to make up, and his team finished fourth in the section and 12th overall in 3:15.81. Texas A&M and Florida were later disqualified.

Texas A&M finished fifth in the women’s team competition with 35 points, while Minnesota were 51st with two points. Oregon (44) and Texas (43.5) were first and second, respectively, while University of Georgia (40.5) and Florida (40.5) tied for third.

Texas A&M were eighth among the men with 18 points, and Penn State finished 32nd with six points. Oregon (62) emerged victorious, finishing ahead of University of Arkansas (54) and Florida (35).

The men’s Cleburne Price Jr. 4x400 had set up another thrilling showdown involving Texas A&M, Florida and LSU, but Deon Lendore started to slow on the backstretch of his anchor leg and then stopped with 120m left in the race. The three previous legs for the Aggies included Gregory Coleman (46.7), Carlyle Roudette (44.7) and Shavez Hart (45.6).
