Football / Discipline...
« on: December 24, 2005, 10:55:05 AM »
I was curious because discipline is key to a teams success above and beyond and there have been issues in the past where players were repramanded for not following the coaches instructions or maybe not showing up for practices or always late, walking out on a session.

Football / What separates a great defender from a mediocre one?

I ask myself this question a lot, when looking at men like roberto carlos who could essentially play almost like a forward and have a bullett to kill all the intangibles one will need like accurate long passing, deaf control and speed with skill,so I say do our defenders on T&T match up in anyway with respect to these qualities. Now would you say paolo maldini and roberto carlos are great defenders and marvin andrews and dennis lawrence mediocre.

Liverpool furious with referee after 1-0 defeat

By Alastair Himmer

YOKOHAMA, Japan, Dec 19 (Reuters) - European champions Liverpool are furious with Mexican referee Benito Archundia after losing 1-0 to Sao Paulo in the World Club Championship final on Sunday.

Liverpool had three goals ruled out, including a late strike from substitute Florent Sinama-Pongolle although replays showed Xabi Alonso appeared to have been wrongly flagged offside in the build-up.

Coach Rafael Benitez, who expressed his displeasure to FIFA president Sepp Blatter after the match, was also angry that Sao Paulo centre-back Diego Lugano was not sent off for a foul on Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

"It was a red card," said Benitez. "It was so clear. The important decisions, he got them all wrong."

Sao Paulo's goal scorer Mineiro likened his goal to "winning the lottery." The match statistics agreed.

Liverpool had 21 shots and 17 corners but poor finishing ultimately cost them a first world title.

It was somehow fitting that FIFA's revamped six-team tournament should come to a somewhat fractious conclusion.

None of the matches sold out, despite Sunday's crowd of 68,000, while some of the early matches were hardly worthy of the tournament's grandiose title.

Japanese organisers will also need to tighten security next year after a pitch invader almost tore down one of the goal nets on Sunday.

Blatter's brain-child may now be expanded from six to eight teams in 2006 to include a Japanese team and allow Sao Paulo back in as holders.

However, no amount of tinkering by FIFA can improve the quality of football on show.

If the curtain-raising match between Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad and Egypt's Al Ahly did little to aid Blatter's cause, Deportivo Saprissa versus Sydney FC bordered on sabotage.

Sao Paulo's players flew home nursing hangovers on Monday, caring little about FIFA's problems after winning a third world title for the Libertadores Cup holders.

"It's like a dream but at the same time we always had faith that we could beat Liverpool," said Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, who won the player of the tournament award.

Liverpool's thoughts turn to their home game against Newcastle on Dec. 26 but defender Sami Hyypia summed up the team's disappointment with brutal frankness.

"If you win, it stays in the history books forever," he told Reuters. "After five years, nobody will remember who Sao Paulo beat in the final."

Falkirk's Russell Latapy has warned England that Trinidad and Tobago will be no pushovers at the World Cup next year.

Latapy's Trinidad were drawn in Group B with England, Paraguay and Sweden. England may think the draw was kind to them but Latapy insists that Trinidad aren't there just to make up the numbers.

The ex Rangers and Hibernian midfielder said: 'It is  fantastic for us to be in the finals for the first time. But we have said to ourselves that we do not want to go there just to make up the numbers. We want to give good performances and pick up points. These are top players and it would be fun playing against these guys, but we have a lot of talented individuals as well.'

Trinidad's team is made up of lots of players playing in British shores including Latapy and Rangers defender Marvin Andrews.

Football / What do you think about a gay football league?
« on: December 16, 2005, 09:29:29 PM »
I was reading an article on the internet about some gay protesters in chile saying they need to have gays in soccer leagues. But this one coach rene orozco of universidad de chile said his club is looking for"real men, who are hairy, smelly and tough".Orozco said gay players are "another species" and said "they should go join a women's team".

"I don't want to get into trouble with the gays, but I must say a gay league would need different rules. You wouldn't want too much tight marking for example," he said.

Gay rights activist Rolando Jiménez has branded Orozco as a "homophobic and ignorant troglodyte".

Jiménez said: "We will see if he still thinks he's so funny after we have spent a couple of days shouting ourselves hoarse outside his

I was browsing fifas site the other day and noticed there were no T&T players on the list,so I'm asking you what is the criteria for making that list,Interestingly enough on another post a man ask where's stern john like he disappear and it appears he can't make the side even though he's in the top 10 all time goal scorers,so here we have an example of a player who plays for T&T that break all kinda concacaf records and not on the list.Is it because he's consistently inconsistent.I await your thoughts.

Football / Do you agree with 2 or 3 water breaks in a football match?
« on: December 10, 2005, 10:43:07 PM »
I was at a game earlier today in pembroke pines florida where under sixteen youths were playing a match and to my astonishment I witness the ref blowing the whistle for 2 minute water breaks, this was definetly a culture shock to me,so I turned to one of the coaches at the field and ask him if this was new and he replied it's now mandatory in high school and college games played in florida as of a couple weeks ago,now while I understand that this state is basically hot year round, coming from the caribbean we never had at least to my knowledge any incidents of heat stroke or fainting spells as they claim happens hear, now if they're so hell bent on playing soccer in florida why the hell they doh play it in ah air condition covered park. One of the coaches there told me that it has nothing to do with game but as always about law suits, yuh see with the advent lawyers everybody ready to sue at the drop of ah hat.Now I personally have nothing against water breaks but at the expense of stopping the momentum of a game midstream I Think not,we better off not playing at all.

Football / Interesting history of football played in the middle ages......
« on: December 10, 2005, 09:46:52 PM »
Soccer Madness in the Middle Ages

Although 'football hooliganism' amazes audiences in America, (where soccer is still pretty much a mystery) the televised violence of the fans is suprisingly similar to the bloodshed seen in the Middles Ages.

Of course, most of the violence in medieval times was confined to the field.

The original game, either in the market square or countryside, was traditionally played on Shrove Tuesdays and other medieval Holy Days. After church Mass, a no-holds barred contest let loose with the traditional carrying, punching and kicking - with the ball, however, as an afterthought.

By British tradition, the first ball in use was the head of a Viking invader. The more civilized practice - the use of an inflated pig's bladder filled with dried peas - caught on later.

In some medieval communities, game scores were recorded using an old accounting practice, common in the Middle Ages, of notching sticks of wood called 'tallies' that were nicked each time one side scored.*

Nonetheless, unchecked mayhem seemed to be the overall object of the games, some played over miles of countryside, pitting entire villages of men and women (numbering in the hundreds) against each other in days-long matches. Crippling injuries were often the result, along with at least one papal dispensation issued to one player who accidentally killed an opponent.

In urban areas, games were sometimes confined to the market square with the inevitable result of spilling out onto the city streets. This could be bad for business, and merchants' protests finally forced the hand of Nicholas Farndon, Mayor of London, who issued the very first edict banning the game in 1314:

"And whereas there is a great uproar in the City through certain tumults arising from the striking of great footballs in the field of the public – from which many evils perchance may arise – which may God forbid – we do command and do forbid, on the King's behalf, upon pain of imprisonment, that such games shall not be practised henceforth within this city."

The proclamation was, of course, ignored.

*When a last-minute payment was made on a debt - or, in this case - a score resulted in a victory the final nick gave rise to the expression 'in the nick of time. '

2006 World Cup - Germany / Dortmund
« on: December 10, 2005, 12:43:22 PM »
Dortmund Westfalenstadion
Known nationwide as the Bundesliga’s opera-house, the Westfalenstadion was originally built for the 1974 FIFA World Cup and is home to 1. Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.  The stadium is currently being enlarged and will soon have a capacity of 60,000.
    Dortmund:
Dortmund is a large town (pop. 590,000) located in the industrial region called the Ruhrgebiet.  The city itself however is very green and has a number of parks, a zoo, botanical gardens etc.  The football stadium is located at the Westfalen Park, which features a number of halls and venues, which host international rock concerts, operas and sports events. Anyone who have more info on the size of the field post it nah man, some of my friends who live in colonge say the field is as big as the hasley crawford stadium.

Football / Romario still going strong at almost 40.
« on: December 07, 2005, 09:00:32 AM »
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) -- Former Brazil striker Romario, who will be 40 next month, is considering extending his career for another year after finishing the Brazilian championship as top scorer.

"A lot of critics said I should have stopped playing several years ago but I'm going to carry on playing and, hopefully, well," he told Brazilian television. "I hope to play for another year."

Romario scored 22 for goals for Vasco da Gama in this year's championship, one more than 35-year-old Paysandu striker Robson.

It was in sharp contrast to the previous season with Fluminense, when the 1994 World Cup winner appeared to have extended his career for too long.

Romario was sacked by Fluminense after an injury-plagued year in which he was criticized for enjoying too many privileges.

Saw him on fsc being interviewed and tears came to his eyes because they would'nt pick him on the squad for world 2006,even at 40 he's the top scorer in the brazilian league, most fans in brazil are saying the best striker in brazil is not representing his country because of politics, certainly this up for debate.

Is ah forwards talent measured by how well he executes on chances created by his team or by his enate ability to take over ah game an score with deaf skill and speed,if you agree with either one tell me where you think T&T rates in these two areas.

Football / Less Fouls more goals, what you think?
« on: December 02, 2005, 08:29:41 AM »
How to reduce fouling
Football, especially Premiership and Serie A football, has a problem: players can foul as many times as they like with no fixed penalty. It’s at the referee’s discretion to levy a yellow card for consistent fouling during a game and up to the media to flag players for dirty playing tendencies. It's not enough, but what else can be done?

To solve this I’d suggest a novel solution: give out a mandatory yellow card for a player’s first 4 fouls and then a red card if a player fouls 3 more times during the 90 minutes, then allow an extra foul (or deduct a foul) for extra time. To avoid too many red cards, wipe the slate clean after the first “aggressive” yellow which didn’t come as a result of a harsh tackle, etc, and give the player a maximum of 3 fouls before being sent off.

What this would do is begin taking action against the “professional” foul. Fouling is destroying football and its time that we got serious about it. Stopping play damages the flow of the game. There are too many stoppages of play to the detriment of open football.

What would be the best benefit of my suggestion? More goals. Players would have to be more careful about their tackles AND referees more careful with their whistles. Too often referees are at fault for calling touch fouls because of exaggerated reactions by the offensive player. It’s so pathetic to watch a millionaire flail on the pitch from a brush on his shorts. Enough. Referee's too often give the attacker the call because there is no reason not to give the benefit of the doubt.

More goals would come as a result of defenders having fewer tools at their disposal to stop the attacker. Defenders already have enough leeway. Football is one of the hardest sports in the world to score in. I’d like to see more real chances created thru open play resulting in a goal rather than free kicks. Lets reign in the fouling and start seeing 4-3 scores becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Football / Have you heard of the full 90?
« on: November 25, 2005, 01:38:23 PM »
I had been looking at fsc recently and saw the americans once again trying to impose something new to football it's called the full 90 head gear it's supposed to protect you from head injuries. While the good intentions are noted I can't help but think it's a marketing ploy to somehow add this to your soccer attire, lets face it american football with all the head gear and padding  have some of the worst life threatening injuries ever in the history of sport.so you tell me where you think they heading with this.
