It's been on my mind for a while now, reason is I personally know quite a few local guys I play with who are over 40 and there conditioning is well over average, even so they might be fitter than guys half there age,but the question is how much of a factor does age play a part in being selected on a team even though you've shown more talent more skill more control and of course more experience, but still warm the bench.

If they take care of themselves and didn't pick up any serious injuries...a 40-year old could be in good enough shape to play at the highest level...But they are few and far between because most pros get fairly battered throughout their career. They naturally lose a little quickness, but can make up for it in experience so long as they have  good brain for the game, the right supporting cast and good technique.

The modern game is so fast and there are so many games that older players do not recover in time to practice as much or as hard as younger players...and it is a struggle to last the 90 minutes. It is no coincidence that as Maldini and Cafu and company get older they suffer more injuriies. Romario is an anomoly because he is lazy and strolls throughout the game. The team is built around getting him the ball...he makes space for himself more by fading out of the game than his actual movement. But I still love him cause de man is pure hate. Best example, however was Roger Milla, also Mauro Silva at Depor...played at the highest level until last year. Costa Curta still has it...and Serginho at Milan is 36 and has the speed and agility of a 20 year old

Another one...Teddy Sheringham. Turns 40 next week.

As for Roger Milla - endless Africans tell me how d man is at least 5 years older dan his 'official' age, so he was reeeeaal old in 94 world cup.
