Fatima ready for Penn Relays
Sunday, March 22 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Fatima College 4x100m and 4x400m Relay Squad which competed at Penn Relays 2012

THE PENN Relays are one of the longest-running, most recognised international high school track events in the world. Several Trinidad and Tobago schools compete at the prestigious event, which is run off annually at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.

One such school, Fatima College, is hoping to leave its mark, come this year’s edition between April 23-25. Having participated at every one since 2011, the school’s small group is approaching this year’s campaign with a sense of destiny, and with good reason.

Fatima will be contesting the 4x100-metre and the 4x400m relays in the Large School category. “Essentially we should be running our fastest times this year,” their coach, Nigel Cooper said last week, as the sprint relay squad went through a baton-passing drill. “They are within the range of 41-42 (seconds) flat, easily, because there are two to three guys who are going to run sub-11 (seconds).”

Cooper, a former middle-distance runner who now teaches Accounting at his Alma Mater, ought to know. He pays as much attention to their progress as he does to their training regimen; so he can, at the flick of a page, tell what any runner did at the national CARIFTA Trials last year, or that runner’s split at the Relays in 2012.

Since Fatima’s entry five years ago, the sprint relay team has clocked times of 43.7 seconds, 44.26 (2012) and 42.97 (2013), before injury problems in 2014 led to a disappointing 44.04.

Heading the team in both experience and physical stature is Xavier Mulugata, an 18-year-old who runs in both relay squads.

“He started running at seven,” beamed Cooper, “and made his Penn debut in 2011, while in Form Two.” Other members include Alexei Nicholas, Kadeem Campbell, Micaih Joseph and Bevon Gordon.

The commitment is there; they all train, asserted Cooper, “from Sunday to Sunday, with the occasional break,” and yet their academic progress at school has not suffered.

“They are phenomenal,” reflected coach Cooper, watching his charges from the bleachers in the Fatima Pavilion. “ I don’t think I used to train at that level, and I was pretty disciplined. These guys, the majority of them are training Sunday to Sunday, the gym is on at least three days a week, they may have a meet in-between, say on a Friday or Saturday, and the next day, they’re in school.”

Interestingly, the preparation has all been on the grass track at the school ground in Mucurapo, and in the gym. Cooper plans to follow the pattern that has worked for them before: they will have just two “run-outs” on the track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo before flying out.

Fatima’s best 4x100m placing in the last four years at the Relays was 17th out of 273, in the Large-School category (2013).

Whether or not they finish in the top 10, one lofty accomplishment would make it all worthwhile - breaking the 42-second mark and bringing further glory to a school that has produced many outstanding sportsmen. It’s well worth the trying.

TEXAS A&M MEN: Beat The Clock

TEXAS A&M MEN: Beat The Clock

PHILADELPHIA (Frank Bertucci) – These are the times that try men’s souls. Or at least their soles.

These are the times to remember when Texas A&M’s men line up at the Penn Relays this year: 3 minutes (4x400 relay) and 38 seconds (4x100 relay). That’s what three members of the 4x400 team that set an NCAA meet and collegiate record of 3:02.86 at the NCAA Indoor championship meet at Fayetteville, Ark. a month ago think are reachable.

“That (4x400 under 3:00) won’t come as a shock to us,” said Shavez Hart, a native of the Bahamas. “We’re all in great shape.”

The “we” includes his senior classmates Gregory Coleman, Bralon Taplin and Deon Lendore. Taplin ran a 44.89 400 meters Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., finishing second in the open event to 2012 Olympic 400 champion Kirani James. Lendore was third in that race in 45.18. They are the top open 400 times for collegians so far this spring.

“We could all go faster,” Taplin said. “We could break the NCAA record (2:59.59, LSU, 2005).”

Lendore grudgingly admitted that Taplin may be the team’s faster quarter-miler, “right now,” but the native of Trinidad & Tobago is still the Aggies’ 4x400 anchor.

“It depends on how fast the competition is that day,” he said of record-setting. “We’ll be ready.”

And he does not think the schedule at Penn, where he and his teammates face trials and probable finals in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400, will effect them.

“One or two extra races don’t have that much impact on your body,” he said. “The 4x100 is a warmup, 4x200 is an extra race, and the 4x400 is the real deal. And the crowd brings extra energy and helps us to get going.”

A&M is coming off disappointing performances at the 2014 Relays. The Aggies failed to qualify for the 4x100 Championship of America final, finished second in the 4x200, and fourth in the 4x400. Lendore and Hart return from those quartets.

The Aggies ran a 39.24-seconds 4x100 at Arizona State with Hart, Taplin and Coleman running, but did not run in the 4x400. The NCAA 4x100 record is 38.04 by TCU in 1998. The Penn Relays collegiate records: 4x100, 38.68, TCU, 2001; 4x200, 1:19.67, TCU, 2000; 4x400, 3:01.10, Florida, 2004.

“We are all able to run fast times,” Taplin said. “We will give it a nice shot.”

Penn Relays Wall of Fame Class of 2015 Announced
04/08/2015 - The Penn Relays Office

Photo Credit: The Penn Relays Office

PHILADELPHIA -- The Penn Relay Carnival adds to the Wall of Fame begun in 1994 at the time of the 100th running.  The class of 2015, the 22nd group of inductees, brings the number of individuals selected to 103, with 93 relay teams having been chosen.  Four individuals and four relay teams were selected by a panel of Penn Relays experts.  The sole restriction in the nomination process is that only retired athletes (or those now competing as masters) may be nominated, and inductees are honored solely for their accomplishments at the Penn Relays; achievements in any other meets are not considered.  Any relay team may be nominated, and nominations of relay teams and individuals will be accepted by the Penn Relays office at any time and from any interested party.

Each of this year’s four individual inductees competed at the Penn Relays while in high school, a rarity for a Wall of Fame class.  Mark Boswell and Obea Moore each set Carnival records as high school seniors, with Boswell also setting a meet record as a collegian.  John Gregorek starred as a distance medley anchor, running on winning DMR teams in both high school and college.  Gina Procaccio, never a winner while in high school, became the winningest runner ever—man or women—in the Relays mile or 1500.

This year’s relay team honorees includes the 1965 Villanova 2-mile relay team, which is being honored on the 50th anniversary of their win.  The team of Jim Orr, Al Adams, Tom Sullivan, and Noel Carroll ran a Carnival record time of 7:26.1.  Although the time was better just two years later, the combination of running at the longer distance of two miles (about 2.5 seconds longer than 3200 meters) and on the old cinder track made the value of this time much greater, the equivalent of a mark which would hae lasted as a meet record until 1982.

The 1965 North Carolina College 880-yard relay team of Robert Johnson, Terrell Amos, Edwin Roberts and Norm Tate set a Relays record of 1:24.4.  This was the last Relays record set at this distance on the cinder track, and it remained on the books until 1970.  Considering the difference between cinders and the synthetic surface introduced in 1967, the surpassing of this record didn’t really come until 1972.

The 2002 El Dorado High School 4x100-meter relay ran a Penn Relays record of 40.15.  The team of Dion Rodriguez, Marc Burns, Kevin Straker and Darrel Brown set a mark which lasted as the meet record for four years, giving Trinidad & Tobago it’s first high school championship at the Relay Carnival.

The 2003 LSU women’s 4x100-meter relay team of Stephanie Durst, Monique Hall, Lolo Jones and Muna Lee ran 42.73 to set a Carnival, which lasted five years.  The same foursome was elected to the Wall of Fame in the 4x200 back in 2008.

Mark Boswell
Central Peel (Brampton, Ontario) High School ’97, Texas ‘00

A four-time participant at the Relays, Boswell won the high jump each time, once while a Canadian high schooler, and three times for the University of Texas.  In 1997 he set the high school meet record at 7-4 ½, a mark which stands to this day.  As a collegian, he jumped 7-6 ½ in 2000, setting a meet record which lasted 13 years.

Gina Procaccio
Sun Valley (Aston, Pa) High School ’82, Florida ‘85, Villanova ’87, Sallie Mae TC ‘94

After her senior year at Villanova where she ran on a winning distance medley team, Procaccio won the women’s mile or 1500-mters a record five times.  The last of those titles, at 1500m in 1994, was run in a meet record 4:09.25.  On the comeback path in 1999, Procaccio added the Olympic Development 5000-meter title as she moved up in distance.

John Gregorek
St. Anthony’s (Smithtown, NY) High School ’78, Georgetown ‘82

A three-time winner in distance relays, Gregorek had a penchant for upending the hopes of other powerhouses.  As a high school senior he ran a 4:06.5 1600-meter anchor to help St. Anthony’s win the distance medley and keep Trenton Central from winning three titles that year.  Four years later, his 3:55.1 anchor—then the second-fastest ever at the Relays—ended Villanova’s 16-year streak in the college distance medley.

Obea Moore
John Muir (Pasadena, Ca) High School ‘97

A two-time participant at the Relays, Moore was selected the Outstanding Male High School Relay Event Athlete each time as he anchored winning 4x400-meter relays in 1996 and ’97.  His John Muir team missed the meet record by less than a half-second the first time, but in 1997 the foursome ran 3:08.72 setting a Carnival Record that lasts to this day. Moore’s split of 45.08 in the ’07 race equaled the fastest high school leg at the Relays to that time.

Fatima going for glory
Saturday, April 18 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Fatima College 4x100m Relay Team ready for Penn Relays

WHEN THE annual Penn Relays are run off next week in Philadelphia, one of the many teams from Trinidad and Tobago attending with high expectations will be Fatima College.

Fatima will be competing in the High School Boys four by 100 metre relay for large schools, and this week, the team received a timely boost with the injection of a $20,000 donation from the TT Newsday newspaper.

Fatima have produced some creditable performances since making their debut at the relays in 2011, and they have reason to be upbeat about their chances this time around. Save for an injury-plagued 2014 campaign, they have lowered their times in the “four by one” every year.

In 2013, the boys in blue and gold clocked 42.97 seconds to finish 17th of 273 teams in the Large School category. Additionally, at the Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships a few days ago, their team captain, Xavier Mulugata showed form in winning the Boys Over-18 100 metres.

Newsday will be rooting for them and all the TT teams competing at the meet. The Penn Relays will be run off between April 23-25 at Franklin Field, in the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Penn honours for ElDo
…funding woes put attendance in doubt

Darrel Brown member of ElDo teamed that won Penn Relays 4x100m High School Boys Champs thirteen years ago in 40.15 seconds—a Penn Relays record that stood for four years.

El Dorado Senior Comprehensive 4x100 metres Penn Relays trophies

The 2002 El Dorado Senior Comprehensive 4x100 metres relay team will be inducted to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame, in Pennsylvania, USA, on Friday.

Thirteen years ago, Dion Rodriguez, Marc Burns, Kevin Straker and Darrel Brown teamed up for victory in the High School Boys Championship of America sprint relay, the powerful ElDo quartet getting the baton round the track in 40.15 seconds—a Penn Relays record that stayed in the books for four years.

David Prime, a teacher at the school which has since been renamed El Dorado East Secondary, was at the world famous Penn Carnival Relay back in 2002, accompanying the athletes as manager/coach.

“We were over the moon in 2001,” Prime told the Express, “when we became the first school from Trinidad and Tobago to win at the Penn Relays. In going back in 2002 we were quite confident of defending the title.

“We were extremely proud to have won a second title in 2002, and in the way we did it. We broke a 16-year-old record, and Darrel Brown was named one of the athletes of the meet. We felt very proud of our achievement, and felt this would have been the opening for more schools from Trinidad and Tobago to attend the Penn Relays. We also made the Jamaicans recognise that we too could compete.”

Prime said he was thrilled when he got the news that the record-breaking ElDo quartet would be one of four relay teams in the Penn Relays Wall of Fame Class of 2015.

“We have a culture in T&T that when something is done we shelve it. ElDo is a brand as far as the Penn Relays is concerned, and to be inducted to the Wall of Fame is an amazing thing. I feel proud of what we achieved and proud for Trinidad and Tobago.”

The manager/coach said that in addition to Friday’s induction ceremony, organisers of the Penn Relays had planned to introduce the famous ElDo quartet to the massive crowd that will be at Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon.

“The exposure for the country…being introduced to a crowd of 50,000 at the stadium, live on US television.”

There is a question mark, however, over the attendance of Team ElDO at the Penn Relays. The four athletes and Prime were expected to be in Pennsylvania no later than Thursday, one day ahead of the induction ceremony, but unfortunately, anticipated funding for the trip had not yet materialised by press time, last night.

“It’s still unknown if we’ll be there,” said Prime, “but whether we’re there or not, we achieved something to be proud of, and that achievement cannot be erased. “Getting to a Penn Relays final is difficult, competing against 600 schools. We did it three times, won twice, broke a record, and now the Wall of Fame. This is a major honour as far as I’m concerned. It can be used by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sport to motivate students and athletes, showing them what’s possible with hard work. It’s a learning tool.”

Another T&T athlete, 1964 double Olympic bronze medallist Edwin Roberts will also be inducted to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame on Friday, as part of the 1965 North Carolina College 4x220 yards relay team.

The team, consisting of Dion Rodriguez, Marc Burns, Darrel Brown and Kevin Straker, will be inducted into the Pennsylvania relay Carnival Wall of Fame.
Coach of the 2002 team David Prime could not hold back the excitement, sharing the news as we sat with him. He says it’s been long in coming.

Students of Bishops High and Scarborough Secondary will be competing at this year’s prestigious Penn Relays University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA beginning on Thursday, April 23.

A team of ten athletes will represent Bishops, while Scarborough will field seven competitors.

Carifta boys under 18 200m champion Akanni Hislop will lead Bishops in action in the High schools boys 4x100m and 4x400m events.  Younger brother Ako, hurdler Aaron Lewis, Franklyn Stanisclaus and Dwight St. Hilaire are also in the line-up. Bishops High will be competing for the second year after debuting in 2014, finishing ninth in heat twelve of the High Schools Boys 4x100m clocking 49.58 seconds.

Akanni,  Ako and St. Hillaire were members of last year’s team. Omari Benoit will contest the High Schools High jump and will be aiming improving on his 6th place finish in 2014 with a distance of 1.96m.

Anya Akili heads the list of girls representing Bishops.  The triple gold medallist at last week’s Secondary Schools’ Championships is joined by top national junior table tennis player Jasher De Gannes, Jamellia Potts and Nkoni Morrision.  Bishops will compete in the High Schools Girls 4x100m and 4x400m. In 2014 Bishops contested the 4x100m but failed to finish.

Scarborough Secondary will be making their maiden trip to the Relay. The quartet of La Shawn Roberts, Jonathan Barker, Nku, Taraffel Joseph and Jelani Alleyne will bid for gold in the High Schools Boys 4x100m and 4x400m. Scarborough athletes earned the right to compete at the Penn Relays after excelling at the National Secondary Schools Relay Festivals in February.

Fourteen year old Safiya John is the lone female for Scarborough and will vie for honours in the High Schools Girls long jump. John was a double gold medallist at the Secondary Schools Championships.

The Tobago athletes will leave Tobago on Tuesday night.

The Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport extends best wishes to the young athletes in Pennsylvannia.

PENN RELAYS PREVIEW: College Men’s Sprint Relays
04/22/2015 - The Penn Relays Office

Written by: The Penn Relays Office

PHILADELPHIA (Jack Pfeifer) - The Jamaican school U-Tech comes into this year’s Penn Relays as the team to beat in the men’s sprint relays. The 121st edition of the Relay Carnival will be held Thursday through Saturday April 23-25 at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.

4x100
The University of Technology, located in Kingston, currently has the world’s leading time in the men’s 4x1, 38.23, run in January at the Gibson Relays in Kingston, in a race in which the squad of Andrew Fisher, Julian Forte, Kemarley Brown and Tyquendo Tracey held off the Usain Bolt-anchored Racers TC by .06.

That time is well under the Penn Relays meet record of 38.68, set 14 years ago by TCU. U-Tech just missed that mark a year ago when it won the Relays in 38.71. Fisher, Forte and Tracey all return from that team. For Fisher 2015 will be an attempt to win his third championship in the event, as he was a member of U-Tech’s 2013 winning squad as well. The Jamaican school has now won the 4x1 five times. LSU and TCU have won the most times, nine apiece.

LSU, which last won the 4x1 in 2011, enters this year’s Relays with the #2 domestic college time, 38.93. Coach Dennis Shaver’s squad was a close second a year ago, running 38.83. The Tigers expect to run a lineup of Josh Thompson, Vernon Norwood, Tremayne Acy and Aaron Ernest.

The leading U.S. college entry is Coach Pat Henry’s Texas A&M squad, which won last month’s Texas Relays in 38.91, .02 up on rival LSU. A&M, which last won at Penn in 2010, has not made the final here the past two seasons because of dropped batons in the preliminary round. A&M has a lineup of Devin Jenkins, Shavez Hart, Bralon Taplin and Deon Lendore.

Other leading entries in the event this year include Florida State, led by the national high school record holder in the men’s 100, the freshman Trentavis Friday; Clemson, fifth at Texas Relays and the 1999 champions, and St. Augustine’s, last year’s NCAA Division II champions. Florida State has never won the 4x1 at the Relays.

4x200
U-Tech is also the defending champion in this event, having run 1:20.07, the fourth-fastest ever at the Relays, to win a year ago, defeating Texas A&M by .22. The Jamaican squad also won here in ’12.

A&M, the champions in ’13, used returnees Shavez Hart and Deon Lendore on last year’s runnerup team, but this year’s entered lineup has Gregory Coleman, Bralon Taplin, Deon Hickey and Elijah Morrow. Last year’s time of 1:20.29 was the fastest losing time ever at Penn.

LSU won Texas Relays in an excellent 1:22.60 and was third a year ago at the Relays in 1:21.47, the fastest third-place time ever. The Tigers won the event in 2011 and have won it five times in all.

Other leading teams include St. Augustine’s, fourth a year ago in 1:21.91, the fastest fourth place ever; Texas, winners of the Texas Relays B race in 1:23.34; and South Carolina, finalists a year ago.

4x400
The top two entries are Texas A&M and U-Tech.

Except for the Relays, A&M has won everything in sight in recent years in this event. The Aggies are the defending NCAA outdoor champions, running 2:59.60 last year, .01 from the collegiate record, and the reigning NCAA indoor champions, running 3:02.86 last month to break that collegiate mark.

They won the Texas Relays this spring in 3:02.19, the fastest time in the world so far this outdoor season, and did that without the use of Bralon Taplin, currently No. 3 on the world list and the No. 1 collegian thus far this outdoor season at 44.89. Taplin is not even the leading quartermiler on the A&M squad, as they plan to anchor Deon Lendore, the reigning NCAA champion with a PR of 44.36. Lendore, returning from an injury indoors, has run 45.18 outdoors thus far.

Taplin and Lendore are expected to be joined by Gregory Coleman and Shavez Hart. A&M won this event at the Relays in 2011 and 2013 but finished a well-beaten 4th a year ago.

U-Tech -- which has never won this event at Penn -- placed second at the Gibson Relays in Jamaica this season, running 3:04.02 with a team of Jonia McDonald, Chadoye Dawson, Travane Morrison and Faedian Royes. They were fifth in last year’s Relays.

The 2012 champions, LSU, have an excellent squad of Quincy Downing, Darrell Bush, Cyril Grayson and this year’s NCAA individual champion in the 400, Vernon Norwood. The Tigers ran 3:04.28 this year indoors and were third outdoors a year ago at the NCAA meet in 3:01.60. They were sixth in 3:11 a year ago at Penn.

Other contenders this year include Texas, third indoors in 3:06, second at the Relays last year in 3:05 and fifth at the Texas Relays in 3:08; St. Augustine’s, Div. II champion indoors and outdoors; Western Kentucky, 3:03 last year outdoors, and Clemson, 3:06 this spring.

The defending champions are the Pitt Panthers, which won a year ago in 3:03.44, their first victory in the event at the Relays since 1939 and the first win at Penn by an Eastern team since George Mason in 1995.

SMR
LSU, which won last year’s sprint medley relay in a surprise out of an unseeded section, returns Darrell Bush, Tremayne Acy and anchor half-miler Blair Henderson from last year’s winning squad. Quincy Downing, who also ran on last year’s team, is on the LSU team but is expected to be replaced for this race by Julian Parker. The Tigers won a year ago in 3:17.96, faster than the time of 3:18.39 Penn State had run to win the seeded section.

The Nittany Lions, winners of the race in 2011 and 2012, return their anchor runner from a year ago, Brannon Kidder.

Other leading squads include Texas A&M, fourth a year ago, and the University of the West Indies, based in Jamaica, anchored by the 1:47 halfmiler Jo-wayne Hibbert.

SHR
The top-seeded team in this year’s shuttle hurdle relays is South Carolina, which last won this event 12 years ago. That was the last Relays victory by a men’s team for Coach Curtis Frye.

The winner of this event the past two seasons, Savannah State, did not enter a team this year.

USA vs. The World Relay Pools Announced (T&T didn't enter any relay teams!)
« Reply #14 on: April 23, 2015, 11:44:53 PM »
Looks like T&T didn't bother to enter any national relays teams this year. They probably decided it was too close to World Relays and to save some money and keep our athletes fresher for the Bahamas next weekend.

St Francois Girls College, Bishop Anstey High School, St Joseph’s Convent, El Dorado Girls West, Bishops High School Tobago, Toco Girls Secondary, Fatima College and UTT from T&T are all involved in the Penn Relays this year as well as a couple of our T&T athletes who are running for US colleges including Deon Lendore.

THE El Dorado Senior Comprehensive 2002 High School Boys Championship of America 4x100 metres relay team will be inducted to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame today. And thanks to the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) and the Ministry of Sport, all four members of that record-breaking quartet are likely to be in Pennsylvania, USA to share in the moment.

Dion Rodriguez, Marc Burns, Kevin Straker and Darrel Brown teamed up for victory at the 2002 Penn Relay Carnival, retaining the title ElDo had captured in 2001 and establishing a new meet record in the process--40.15 seconds.

Tomorrow, the final day of the 2015 Penn Relays, Rodriguez, Burns, Straker and Brown will be introduced to the 50,000-plus crowd at Franklin Field during a live television broadcast.

In an Express article, on Tuesday, it was reported that funding woes could prevent the famous ElDo sprint relay team from being at the induction ceremony. But the Sports Company came to the rescue, providing Burns, Straker, Brown and ElDo teacher/manager/coach David Prime with airline tickets to Pennsylvania. Their accommodation has been paid for by the Ministry of Sport.

Burns, Brown and Prime were scheduled to arrive in Pennsylvania yesterday, while Rodriguez travelled to the meet in his capacity as assistant coach at Howard University. Straker, however, had a visa appointment at the United States Embassy in Port of Spain yesterday, and is scheduled to leave this morning for the Relays.

Meanwhile, Fatima College will be among a number of Trinidad and Tobago schools today competing for honours. Led by National Secondary Schools Senior Boys (18+) champ Xavier Mulugata, the boys from the Mucurapo Road institution will compete in the heats for the High School Boys 4x100 Metres (Large School Category). Their heat is scheduled for 11.35 am today. The Fatima team is being coached by Nigel Cooper. Newsday has assisted the school in its bid for sprint relay excellence to the tune of $20,000.

SPRINT MEN: Fatima's 4x100m team will be in action today at the Penn Relays.

Fatima, since making their debut at the relays in 2011, have been going faster each year with the exception of an injury-plagued 2014 campaign.

In 2013, the boys in blue and gold clocked 42.97 seconds to finish 17th of 273 teams in the Large School category.

Also in action yesterday, El Dorado West placed 91st in the Girls 4x100m event with a time of 52.06. Bishops High School from Tobago were 188th after clocking 53.66 while Toco Secondary’s girls registered a time of 53.87. Congrats to Portius. She is following in the footsteps of Cloepatra, Annie Alexander. That is a nice continuity. I wonder if she will go UTT or UWI or look for a school in the states.
