Settling in to watch Mali disassemble Mexico. However, the Malians look woeful defending 1 v 1. Good luck to them. :)

Sloppy management of the game x Mali in the dregs, but they still prevail 2-0. Mexico will have plenty wuk versus Uruguay.

I knew he wasn't a guaranteed pick, but I still thought there was a better than remote possibility that Uruguay would include Diego Fagundez in the final WC squad despite watching him being used sparingly during South American U20 qualifying ... but even his 100 appearances in MLS doh seem to have recommended his inclusion. Just really hit me that he is not in New Zealand, as he's on for New England versus LA.

.. and once again for the day ... goal as I was posting ... free kick by Fagundez.

The double swerve on that last Brazil goal was ridiculous. Keeper thought it was going wide and pull back only for it to come back the other way once it hit the ground and sneak in off the post.

I missed most of the second half. Was the score a result of Brazil flexing their muscles or Nigeria tiring.

The 3rd goal was as much a fluke as a good shot.

The 4th was a terrible goalie error, he let a straightforward shot go through his hands and between his legs for a man to tap in on the line.

Both sides were very wasteful in front of goal though.

Very disappointing.  I thought Nigeria was the better team in the first half. Their passing and movement was the best I've seen so far in this tournament.

U-20 FIFA World Cup: Brazil win classic
(New Zealand Herald)

In easily the best game of the Under-20 World Cup so far, Brazil has prevailed 4-2 over Nigeria in New Plymouth.

The six goal classic, before a vocal crowd at Taranaki Stadium, was a spectacular advertisement for the tournament.

After the teams were locked 2-2 at halftime, replacement Brazil midfielder Boschilia turned the game in the second half. He scored a long range strike on the hour to take them ahead, then made their fourth goal to seal the game in the 82nd minute.

However Nigerian goal keeper Joshua Enaholo won't look back on the match with pride; he made an awful error to concede Brazil's fourth goal and probably could have done more to stop their third.

Brazil deserved their win but it's a tough result for Nigeria. They had looked the better team for most of the first half and at one point were creating chances at will, with their outrageous pace going forward. However, the Flying Eagles seemed to tire in the second half, as the men in the famed yellow shirts tightened their defence.

Overall the match was an absolute beauty. It had everything you might expect from a clash between the South American giants and probably the best African team at this level.

There was some spectacular skills - audacious flicks, tricks and turns - and free flowing, pacy attack from both teams. There were also some sumptuous goals, and many other near misses.

Midfielder Gabriel opened the scoring in the fourth minute for Brazil before the aptly named Success Issac equalised six minutes later. His goal heralded a period of Nigerian dominance capped off by a brilliant strike from Muha Yahaya (28th minute) after a lightning counter attack launched by goal keeper Enaholo. Brazil came back into the match through Judivan - after a back heeled 'nutmeg' by one of his teammates - before taking control in the second half.

Brazil 4 (Gabriel 4, Judivan 34, Boschilia 59, Judivan 82)
Nigeria 2 (S Isaac 10, M. Yahaya 28)

Halftime: 2-2

Germany thump Fiji in Under-20 World Cup opener
(TV New Zealand)

A dominant German side were just too strong for the Fijians as they thumped the Pacific nation 8-1 in their opening FIFA Under -20 World Cup match in Christchurch today.

Hany Mukhtar scored a hat-trick for the Germans while his team mate Niklas Stark scored a double, but the Fijians did have something to cheer about when Iosefo Verevou scored off an unexpected strike in the 48th minute.

Mark Stendera, Grischa Proemel and Marvin Stefaniak also scored for Germany as they tore through the Fijians with ease.

Germany will face off against Uzbekistan on Thursday while Fiji will take on Honduras at Christchurch Stadium.

Thus far, that opening goal by Rodríguez (Panama) versus Argentina has to be a candidate for goal of the tournament.

Mexico just poison Uruguay in the 92nd minute with a free kick.
The defender commit an unnecessary foul, get a 2nd yellow and then his team went from seconds away from a point to a loss.

Mexico played well though. Were the better team I think.

Football: Ghana upset Argentina in the capital
Daniel Richardson (The New Zealand Herald)

Argentina were the pre-tournament favourites to win Group B.

They might still do it but the odds are stacked against them after they lost 3-2 to Ghana in an exciting Fifa Under-20 World Cup match in Wellington tonight.

Argentina, who boast a side laced with promising players, including senior international Emanuel Mammana, have been one of the biggest disappointments during the early stages of the tournament.

They were held to a 2-2 draw against Panama in their opening match on Saturday and were then upset by a Ghanaian side who played with unlimited passion.

With their fans banging drums in the stands and waving flags, their team delivered the level of football that matched their supporters for enthusiasm.

Ghana began the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Austria during the weekend but were a much-improved outfit from that opening game.

While they were well-served by their dangerous attacking players, goalkeeper Lawrence Ati, who plays his club football for Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, was impressive between the posts with a couple of vital saves.

Argentina had their chances and Angel Correa and Tomas Martinez were a constant threat but Ghana found a way to cope.

Goals to Benjamin Tetteh and Clifford Aboagye either side of halftime helped the African side establish a healthy advantage.

Yaw Yeboah, who is on the books of English giants Manchester City, delivered the decisive blow with a 69th-minute penalty.

Giovanni Simeone, son of Argentine legend Diego Simeone, pulled one back with ten minutes left and when Emiliano Buendia scored in the 90th minute, it was all hands to the pump for Ghana but they held on for a valuable win.

If Argentina want to progress from pool play they will need to beat Austria on Friday in their final match, while Ghana will meet Panama in their final group contest.

Ghana and Austria both have four competition points, while Panama and Argentina each have one.

Ghana 3 (Benjamin Tetteh 44, Clifford Aboagye 59, Yaw Yeboah 69 pen) Argentina 2 (Giovanni Simeone 80, Emiliano Buendia 90) halftime: 1-0

United States 4, New Zealand 0 | U-20 World Cup Match Recap
(mlssoccer.com)

The United States U-20 national team booked their place in the knockout rounds of the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a game to spare, thrashing hosts New Zealand 4-0 in Auckland early Tuesday morning via goals from Emerson Hyndman, Paul Arriola and a brace from Rubio Rubin.

The US (2-0-0; 6 points) can now clinch first place in Group A with a win or tie vs. Ukraine in their final group match on Friday (3 am ET; Fox Sports 1, NBC Universo). Ukraine (1-0-1; 4 points) defeated Myanmar 6-0 on Monday, after a scoreless draw with New Zealand in their opening game on May 30.

In contrast to their wobbly opening match vs. Myanmar, coach Tab Ramos’ side seized an early lead vs. the All Whites and did not waver, as Rubin tallied in the wake of a corner kick just six minutes in. The chance was made when Cameron Carter-Vickers thumped a towering header off the woodwork and LA Galaxy Homegrown Bradford Jamieson IV settled the rebound and shot to the far post, where Rubin nipped in for a goal-line tap-in.

Captain Emerson Hyndman – who delivered the corner on the opener – doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, clinically finishing a loose ball from the top of the 18-yard box after Rubin and Jamieson had carved open New Zealand’s back line.

Arriola ran the score to 3-0 after halftime with a razor-sharp strike off the base of the left post following a savvy feed by Gedion Zelalem, who started and played the full 90 minutes for the first time in his fledgling US career.

Rubin grabbed his second in the 83rd minute after a passing combination between substitute Tommy Thompson and Desevio Payne, the latter of whom found Rubin at the far post for another close-range finish. That capped a dominating performance in which the hosts were outshot 30-11.

The victory marked the first clean sheet for the US in a U-20 World Cup match since June 18, 2005, a 1-0 win over Egypt in the Netherlands at what was then known as the World Youth Championship. It’s also the first time in U-20 World Cup history that the US have won their first two matches.

FIFA U-20 World Cup: We need to keep believing - Bazeley
Michael Burgess (The New Zealand Herald)

Darren Bazeley is keeping the faith. The Junior All Whites coach remains positive his team can qualify for the knock-out stages of the Under-20 World Cup, despite last night's 4-0 hammering at the hands of the USA.

There wasn't much to like about the New Zealand effort on Tuesday. They gave up some extremely poor goals, lacked the spirit they had displayed against Ukraine and didn't produce much in possession.

It was New Zealand's worst defeat in Under-20 World Cup history, going back to the 2007 tournament in Canada and a significant step back from the opening game. And perhaps most disappointing of all - the home side couldn't lift for a vocal 15,000 strong crowd at Albany Stadium.

Now the Junior All Whites face a must win match against Myanmar on Friday to have any hope of progressing to the last sixteen. They can't finish in the top two places in Group A, but four points should be enough to qualify as one of the best third placed teams.

"I'd love to be on more [points], said Bazeley. "But what we have done with that one point is given ourselves a chance until the 90th minute against Myanmar to get the four points and go through.

"We need to address what happened [against USA] and then move forward. If we put that opportunity in front of the players - win on Friday and then we will do what we said we would - the players can move forward."

However, Myanmar won't be a cakewalk. Despite their heavy 6-0 loss to the Ukraine on Tuesday, they have shown enough in periods of both their matches to be a significant threat. They have pace across the field and have shown some neat touches in possession.

In contrast, New Zealand have struggled to keep the ball for significant periods, especially in the opposition half. Too often a movement breaks down with a poor pass, not helped by the lack of options for the player in possession.

"We work very hard off the ball," said Bazeley. "I think players need to work as hard when we have got possession, especially the players off the ball."

Meanwhile, Bazeley was lamenting their costly - and basic - errors on Tuesday night.

"For us to compete at this level we need to go through games [basically] mistake free," said Bazeley On Saturday we didn't make any mistakes defensively and we came out of it with a clean sheet. [On Tuesday] it hasn't been quite as mistake free as it was and we have been punished."

FIFA Under 20s: Ukraine thrash Myanmar
Michael Burgess (The New Zealand Herald)

Ukraine took control of Group A on Wednesday with a 6-0 demolition of Myanmar in Whangarei.

The Asian side did well to get to half-time without conceding a goal - and even created some chances of their own - before the Europeans' devastating display in the second half.

Ukraine scored three goals in seven minutes early in the second spell to destroy Myanmar's resolve, then added three more in another ten minute spell.

The result means Ukraine have all but sealed their spot in the round of 16, while Myanmar will be playing only for pride on Friday against New Zealand.

The European had been off target in their opening match against the Junior All Whites on last Saturday but were ruthless in the Northland capital.

Second half substitute Valerii Luchkevych was a key man for Ukraine, scoring one and contributing two assists while compatriot Viktor Kovalenko was imperious in midfield.

Myanmar had showed some promise in the first half but - just like in their opening match against the United States - their lack of inexperience (sic) at this level was exposed as the match progressed.

A Roman Yaremchuk header opened the scoring in the 51st minute, before Luchkevych scored the goal of the day three minutes later, with a precise chip from just outside the area. Kovalenko added a third in a blink of an eye before another three goal burst later in the half, with Kovalenko, Eduard Sobol and Artem Biesiedin cashing in.

Ukraine 6 (R.Yaremchuk 51, V Luchkevych 54, V Kovalenko 57, 77, E Sobol 68, A Biesiedin
Myanmar 0

Half time: 0-0

Match Highlights

Gerd Zeise, Myanmar coach
Obviously we only had the power for one match. The European teams play in another league and we cannot follow. We are too blind and we do not have the experience, that's absolutely clear. It was a disaster and this tournament has come too early for us. We cannot follow these teams, no chance. My team was too poor. It was just like the USA game, in the first 15-20 minutes of the second-half we gave the game away. We must be realists, the party is over. I must apologise to the Myanmar fans, I am responsible for this disaster, but I can't turn a cyclist into a racing driver.

Oleksandr Petrakov, Ukraine coach
I'm very pleased with the game and the result. I had planned to bring [Valerii] Luchkevych at half-time ahead of the game, as we were lacking speed. We had agreed that he would start the second half and he really improved our game. Like in the New Zealand game, we struggled to score our chances in the first half, but this clearly changed after the break. That's why we play football, to make people happy.

Austria edge Panama in spiteful contest
Daniel Richardson (The New Zealand Herald)

There is no lack of drama in Group B at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup.

Late goals were a feature of the opening pair of matches and tonight's clash between Austria and Panama in Wellington had its share of highlights as the Austrians took a valuable 2-1 win.

Panama got on the board first through a brilliant strike from outside the area courtesy of Fidel Escobar in the 38th minute.

But Austria were back in the contest when an own goal from Panama captain Chin Hormechea saw the sides level at the break.

Austria's Valentin Grubeck provided what proved to be the winner early in the second half but the action didn't let up during the final 40 minutes.

Panama goalkeeper Jaime de Gracia saved two penalties to keep his side in the game, despite them going down to nine men as two players were given red cards.

As the rain tumbled down at Wellington Regional Stadium, Panama searched for an equaliser but it wasn't forthcoming in a game that included some spiteful moments between both sides.

Panama's heavy tackling wasn't appreciated by the Austrians who tried to employ their technical passing game, despite the wet conditions.

The result has put Austria in a good position to get out of the group stages but they still need to meet tournament favourites Argentina in their final pool game.

Austria 2 (Chin Hormechea 45+1 og, Valentin Grubeck 51) Panama 1 (Fidel Escobar 38)

Halftime: 1-1

U-20 FIFA World Cup: Qatar thumped by Portugal
Michael Burgess (The New Zealand Herald)

Not a great 24 hours for Qatari football.

On a day when Fifa president Sepp Blatter resigned - which will prompt further questions about the hosting of the 2022 World Cup - their Under-20 team were thumped 4-0 by Portugal in Hamilton, to remain winless in the tournament.

Qatar weren't actually that bad but Portugal are top quality. They qualified second out of Europe and boast strong defenders, some gifted midfielders and plenty of pace and power up front. Captain Tomas, who plays at FC Porto, was particularly impressive along with speedy winger Gelson Martins.

The Europeans were dominant from the start and after several chances Andre Silva opened the scoring, after latching onto a lovely angled through ball. They extended their lead in the 42nd minute thanks to a brilliant bicycle kick from striker Ivo.

Qatar had to attack in the second half and came close on several occasions, with No10 Akram Afif the architect of their best moments. But Ivo made the game safe just after the hour with a towering header, climbing well above his marker at the far post, which prompted the Portuguese coach to clear his bench.

The replacements kept up the quality, with Joao Vigario finishing with aplomb in the 74th minute after a neat drag back and cross from his winger.

Portugal 4 (A Silva 34, Ivo 42, 65, J Vigario 74)
Qatar 0

Halftime: 2-0

U-20 FIFA World Cup: Hungary dispatch North Korea
Michael Burgess (The New Zealand Herald)

Hungary have thrashed North Korea 5-1 in the second Group E game at the Under-20 World Cup today.

It capped an amazing afternoon in New Plymouth, after Brazil and Hungary had earlier produced a six goal thriller.

Hungarian striker Bence Mervo was the hero for the Europeans with a clinical hat trick, though North Korean goal keeper Cha Jong Hun had a forgettable game.

He was exposed badly for at least two of the goals, also he was not helped by a hestiant defence. Overall the Hungarians were too big, too strong and too fast against a surprisingly disorganised North Korean side.

Hungary led 2-1 at halftime but the second half was a one sided affair as the Europeans scored three without reply, and could have had a few more.

The result turns Group E into a three horse race, with Brazil facing Hungary on Thursday and Nigeria against North Korea.

Mervo opened the scoring with a near post header in the 17th minute, after the North Korean defenders seemed to switch off. Choe Ju Song got a well worked equaliser in the 32 minute but that was as close as the Asian side got, as Zsolt Kalmar restored the Hungarian advantage a minute later.

The powerful Mervo added his second just after halftime, followed ten minutes later by compatriot David Forgács. North Korea never stopped trying but conceded a fifth in the 82nd minute, with Mervo scoring from an impossibly acute angle after a improbable dribble along the by-line.

Hungary 5 (B Mervó 17, 49, 82, Z Kalmár 33, D Forgács 60)

North Korea 1 (C Ju Song 32)

Halftime: 2-1

U-20 FIFA World Cup: Honduras take out seven-goal thriller
Daniel Richardson (The New Zealand Herald)

Jhow Benavidez and Kevin Alvarez delivered stunning free kicks for Honduras as they toppled Uzbekistan 4-3 in their Under-20 World Cup fixture in Christchurch today.

Benavidez opened the scoring in the fourth minute with his well-taken strike from the edge of the box, while Alvarez got in on the act shortly after halftime. In the interim, senior international Bryan Rochez, who is on the books of MLS club Orlando City, also scored.

Honduras will face a stern test in Group F when they meet Germany, who hammered Fiji 8-1 at the same venue earlier in the day, but they proved to be a slick outfit with a nice passing game.

Uzbekistan were in the fight throughout the match and Dostonbek Khamdamov, who represented his country at the Under-17 World Cup in the UAE in 2013, scored in the first spell before Eldor Shomurodov sent the game towards a thrilling finish after he netted in the 79th minute.

There was no equaliser for Uzbekistan and Rochez added his second in stoppage time, which killed the game off, but Zabikhillo Urinboev did pull another goal back with one of the final touches of the match.

Honduras 4 (Jhow Benavidez 4, Bryan Rochez 20, 90+2 Kevin Alvarez 49)
Uzbekistan 3 (Dostonbek Khamdamov 31, Eldor Shomurodov 79, Zabikhillo Urinboev 90+6)

Halftime: 2-1

Colombia and Senegal share spoils in Hamilton
(The New Zealand Herald)

Senegal and Colombia will both be confident of advancing to the knockout stages of the Under 20 World Cup after their hard fought 1-1 draw at Waikato Stadium tonight.

On a slippery, cold night in Hamilton both sides struggled with the conditions but produced two moments of magic which defined the match.

Senegal striker Mamadou Thiam scored a contender for goal of the tournament when he twisted and turned his way through the Colombian defence before firing into the bottom corner in the 23rd minute.

But Colombia equalised just before halftime when Alexis Zapata converted a cheeky panenka penalty kick, which sent the hundreds of wet dancing, singing Colombian fans into a frenzy.

Colombian striker Joeo Rodriguez missed a golden chance to win the match when he sent a shot agonisingly wide from six yards in the 80th minute.

Senegal were always a physical threat from set plays while Colombia dominated possession, but lacked a little quality in the final third in difficult conditions.

The colourful Hamilton crowd of just under 4000 didn't let the rain steal their party as they sung and danced their way through the 90 minutes.

Powerful striker Thiam always looked dangerous for Senegal while Rodriguez was a constant threat with clever footwork for Colombia.

Colombia, who sit on four points, will next face Portugal in a match that will determine the Group C winner while Senegal must beat winless Qatar to progress to the round of 16.

Serbia beat listless Mali
Hayden Meikle (The New Zealand Herald)

All four teams in group D at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup have three points after tonight's game at Otago Stadium.

Serbia beat a listless Mali side 2-0 to ensure those two teams plus Mexico and Uruguay would have everything to play for on Saturday.

The Serbians, who had lost to Uruguay on Sunday, put the game to rest in the 74th minute.

Three one-touch passes created a simple tap-in for substitute forward Stanisa Mandic to make it 2-0.

It was an oddly flat first half, enlivened by one piece of absolute brilliance.

Serbian midfielder Sergej Malinkovic scored the opening goal with a blistering free kick that rocketed past Mali goalkeeper Djiqui Diarra.

Mali had much more ball but could not do enough with it, and both sides were guilty of some haphazard shooting.

The Otago Stadium doubleheader attracted a moderate crowd, most Dunedinites electing to stay at home as the city was hit by flooding.

Serbia 2 (Sergej Malinkovic 27, Stanisa Mandic 74), Mali 0.
Halftime: Serbia 1-0.

I feel that's a bit unfair to their U-20 team - losing 0-4 to Portugal in a World Cup isn't such a bad result. If it was a thrashing, sure, but the write-up was a little harsh.

Was disappointed in the level of play between Uruguay and Mexico.

Didn't view the game. Just the highlights. Read one Uruguayan commentator's view and it was an indictment of the way the team played. Any loss stings, but there is also almost a sort of contempt regarding losing to Mexico. One of the things I've noticed is that there's not a tower of esteem in Argentina and Uruguay regarding Mexican football. Mexico has had to fight for respect, but it is gradually and grudgingly coming.

The player, Lemos, who made the mistake on the goal is typically rock solid. Still early days yet. The errors might not have been fatal to moving on to the next stage.

Diego Simeone's son was very impressive in this tournament.

Yes, in the sense that he top-scored etc., but there are doubts as to his long term viability in the upper echelons of the pro ranks. Many are not convinced. For the moment, he's helped the U20s through scoring several opportunistic goals, and of course, goals matter ... but, for River he's not exactly setting the world on fire. Some feel the name 'Simeone' counts for a lil something extra.
