Jumping into the development conversation. The US professional sport system is fed, in the main, by their schools (particularly colleges & universities). Europe on the other hand uses youth academies to develop their future professional athletes. I think that our current system is more suitable to the European model so our focus should be on a combination of having current clubs with youth teams develop their youth players more along the lines of an academy. Pay more attention to nutrition, other off field habits, tactical training (board work) and even social skills.

I was at the Fatima-CIC game this afternoon. I got there as CIC was kicking off after conceding a third goal (score 1-3). The score remain unchanged at halftime. The intensity of the match was good and it looked like a rivalry game, but neither team looked dangerous on attack. The long ball was a preferred tactic by both teams and there was little in the way of ball possession and cutting through balls for wingers to run on to. I was surprised to see the Fatima goalkeeper time wasting in the first half and Fatima's captain (Creed?) at one point shouted at a spectator to let a ball pass rather than keeping it close to field. Fatima did look the stronger of the two teams though going into the half.

The second half got off to a spectacular start when a CIC long ball that went over the Fatima defence and a hesitant keeper ended up getting lobbed to make the game 3-2. Fatima got even more negative with more players joining in the time wasting tactic. I think that cost them because it allowed CIC the attacking initiative and the belief that they could come back. For all that though they lacked attacking creativity and didn't threaten their opponents goal. Fatima managed a couple of counter attacks, but their players (#11 comes to mind) dribbled until closed down, tried a lob pass that gave the defender time to get back and tackle or on one occasion got off a weak shot that went wide. The same #11 got into a "discussion" with an opponent and at one point shouted "grow a brain" to the guy. I wonder what he was using his brain for when he elbowed the CIC captain (#13) later in the game for the majority of the ground to see (you should have heard the groan from a Fatima supporter next to me) and received a red card for his work. A CIC left side attack ended up with the winger cutting in field and shooting to the last post. The keeper's parry ended up in the path of an attacker who slotted home the equaliser. Then with the last kick of the game, a right side freekick was well met by an attacker who headed just inside the near post for a dramatic winner. The sideline celebrations even saw a fight, although I was on the other side of the field to see what happened. Truth be told, squabbles of entitled teenagers hold no interest for me. By the end of the match CIC was the better team and deserved to win, but I feel that Fatima did themselves no favours by being so negative as early as the first half.

The game itself had a lot of energy, but little in terms of consistent, thoughtful football. Creed stood out as the best player for Fatima, but a couple of others looked like they needed some gym time. #10 (a midfielder), #13 (captain and centre back) and #2 (left back) stood for CIC and they had a sub (#12) give them some intensity too. I also found the game remarkably quiet from a spectator stand point. Only the Fatima students were singing throughout the match and for such a rivalry I remember a lot more noise being the order of the day, even from the losing team. The Saints guys were plenty excited when the equaliser and winner came though.

PRESENTATION San Fernando whipped Pleasantville 3-0 yesterday at Skinner Park, San Fernando to stay top of the South Zone standings. Action was in the Championship Division of the BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).

Renaldo Atwell netted a pair, in the 74th and 85th minutes, following Angel Williams’ opener in the 36th for the reigning South Zone winners.

Also in the South Zone, Princes Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Mayaro while Naparima came away with a 2-2 draw against Shiva Boys at Penal.

St Augustine edged 2012 champions Arima 3-2 at the Arima Municipal Stadium to move to first place in the East Zone. Ricardo John registered a hat-trick (51st, 67th and 87th), while Arima got strikes from Quesi Windsor (18th) and an own goal from Aikim Andrews (90th).

Corey Stewart notched a double (third and eighth) as El Dorado East took care of the visiting Valencia while Tariq John scored two penalties (53rd and 86th) and Akeel Modeste netted in the 18th as Trinity East pipped El Dorado West 3-2 at Trincity.

In the North Zone, defending champs St Anthony’s whipped hosts Diego Martin 3-1, Mucurapo blanked hosts QRC 3-2 and St Mary’s walked away from the Fatima Ground in Mucurapo with a 4-3 win over Fatima.

In the sister isle Tobago, Signal Hill crushed hosts Goodwood 6-0, Mason Hall hammered Pentecostal Light and Life 5-0 at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, Speyside trounced Bishop’s High 4-0 at home while Scarborough, the 2012 winners, were held to a 2-2 draw away to Roxborough.

Matches will continue on Saturday, including the Central Zone, who were on a bye yesterday.

CHINUA BERNARD scored twice, including a dramatic last minute winner as St Mary College rallied from two goals down to beat Fatima College 4-3 in BGT&T Secondary Schools Football League a North Zone thriller on Fatima College ground, Mucurapo yesterday.

Home team Fatima led 3-1 and seemed well on the way to victory at the halfway stage before St Mary’s rallied with three unanswered second half goals.

First, Bernard scored just three minutes into the second half to cut the lead to 3-2, and after more CIC pressure, Jilani Christopher got the equaliser to make it 3-3 in the 85th, with five minutes still remaining in the match. Fatima would have hoped to hold on for a point at that stage, but Bernard struck in the 90th minute to give the Saint full points and a 100 per cent record after two matches.

Fatima had the brilliant start, getting a 16th minute opener from Dominic Jangoo and another from Marquise Hoyte seven minutes later to lead 2-0. Jangoo added a third in the 31st and home fans were buzzing, before the disastrous second half of the match.

Meanwhile, one of the big clashes in the East Zone saw St Augustine edge Arima North Secondary 3-2. Quasi Winsor netted a brace for the Arima team, but Ricardo John did even better for St Augustine, getting a hat-trick.

Girls SSFL kicks off today in four zones.

The BG T&T Girls Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) will kick off today, with defending champions Debe Secondary opening up in the South Zone against Point Fortin East Secondary at Debe from 3.45 p.m.

The defending champions will be a new look side, with several big names that have contributed to their rule of the League in the last four years moving on.

The other teams in the South Zone are Vessigny Secondary, who tackle Fyzabad Secondary at home, as well as Mayaro Secondary, who make the long trip to Siparia East Secondary in the other encounter.

The North Zone will feature two interesting matches, with St Francois Girls College hosting St Joseph’s Convent, and Providence Girls High at home to Holy Name Convent.

In the East, Toco Secondary visit St Augustine Secondary, while El Dorado East Secondary and San Juan North Secondary square off at El Dorado.

And in Tobago, Signal Hill Secondary and Scarborough Secondary clash at Signal Hill. All matches kick off at 3.45 p.m.

Debe coach Clive Auguste says despite the losses in his team, he is hopeful they will be competitive this season. He is also disappointed with the fact that the national Under-17 players have been barred from playing in the League.

“Things are going okay, we have a pretty new team this year,” Auguste told the Express yesterday. “It’s more developmental this year.

Most of our big guns have gone. (Former skipper) Patrice Vincent has entered the police service, (star striker) Kayla Taylor gone to college in Texas. Some of the top defenders have gone on. The national Under-17 players have been told they can’t play.”

Returning, though, are defender Ray-Ann Montano, midfielder Sheneika Paul and a few others. Auguste wants his team to be “competitive”.

“Across the board, most of the schools will be affected by the ban on Under-17 players.

“A lot of the senior people would also have moved on from most of the other schools. We have to take it one game at a time and see how it goes,” he said.

Debe participated in a Southern Football Association tournament recently, and with “five or six matches under their belt”, coach Auguste hopes that will be enough for a good start for his team.

Tigers, Saints remain unbeaten in North

A headed goal from striker Chinua Bernard in practically the final play of the match secured a come-from-behind 4-3 victory for St Mary’s College over rivals Fatima College in the North Zone of the bgTT First citizen Secondary Schools Football League, to keep the Saints unbeaten after two matches.

St Anthony’s College, the reigning North Zone and National InterCol champion, also remained with a 100 per cent record when it dropped Diego Martin North 3-1. Meanwhile, East Mucurapo responded from its 1-0 loss to St Mary’s in the SSFL opener to edge Queen’s Royal College, 3-2.

Playing away at Fatima Ground, Mucurapo, and trailing 3-1 at half time, coach Jason Edwards’ charges responded in mature fashion to grind out a victory to remember. Dominic Jangoo opened for Fatima in the 20th, which was followed quickly after by his second seven minutes later. The Saints pulled one back three minutes later, through Rashad Hyacinth, but Fatima made it 3-1 at half time, when Maquis Hoyte responded in the 35th minute.

Within moments of the second half, the comeback was on when Bernard, the scorer of last week’s winning goal for the Saints, lobbed the Fatima custodian to make it 3-2.

With pressure mounting and the match nearing its end, St Mary’s found the equaliser through substitute winger Jelani Christopher with five minutes remaining via a close-range effort.

It appeared to be too much for Fatima, which cracked when Arvin Prescod was handed a straight red card for a shove to the face at St Mary’s skipper Miles Yorke off the ball.

With a turnover, St Mary’s made the extra player count in the final breath of the match, when Bernard rose from a free kick to head a glancing effort into the net, much to the excitement of the traveling support.

The win both for St Mary’s and St Anthony’s put the two teams on six points, while Fatima suffered consecutive loss with a combined seven goals conceded. Malick was on a bye for the match day.

John steers Green Machine past Arima

Ricardo John scored a second-half hat-trick as St Augustine Secondary came from behind to slip past Arima North 3-2 when East Zone continued at the Arima Municipal Stadium in Arima, yesterday.

Going into the match, both teams had won their opener with St Augustine blanking El Dorado East 2-0 and Arima North outgunning San Juan North 5-4.

Arima North was the first to find the target with Kwesi Windsor scoring in the 18th minute for a his team to lead 1-0 at the half, however six minutes after the re-start John got his first for the “Green Machine” to tie the match, before he added another six minutes later for a 2-1 lead.

Three minutes from full-time John completed his hat-trick and sealed the win for St Augustine, while national Under-20 striker Aikim Andrews conceded an own-goal in the dying minutes as Arima North pressed.

In the end, St Augustine held on for its second win from as many matches, against a main rival to lead with maximum six points, three more than Arima North, San Juan North, El Dorado East and El Dorado West which was stunned 3-2 by Trinity East at Trinity.

Corey Stewart went from hero to villain for El Do East as his two first-half strikes earned his team a 2-0 win at home over Valencia before he along with Jamal Mohammed of Valencia was red carded.

At Trinity, a late penalty from Tariq John sealed a 3-2 win for Trinity East College over El Dorado West.

Down South, Reinaldo Atwell’s late brace gave defending champions Presentation an easy 3-0 win over Pleasantville. Angel Williams’ first half strike also led to Pleasantville’s second lost to start to the season.

In other matches, Shiva Boys and Naparima battled to a 2-2 draw, while the Princes Town, Mayaro encounter ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

In Tobago, reigning champion Scarborough was held to a 2-2 draw by Roxborough, while Speyside secured its second win with a 5-0 drubbing of Bishop’s high.

Defending Secondary Schools Football League South Zone girls champions Debe Secondary started their 2013 campaign with a 3-2 win over Point Fortin East in their opener in Debe on Thursday.

They will take on Fyzabad Secondary in their second game of the season tomorrow in Fyzabad from 3 p.m.

St Francois Girls College, the 2012 North Zone winners, had less of a stellar start, being held to a 3-3 draw with St Joseph Convent at St Francois in their opening match on Thursday.

Also in the North, St Francois Holy Name Convent tomorrow. Holy Name drew 0-0 with Providence Girls in their opener on Thursday.

In the East, San Juan North hammered El Dorado East Secondary 6-0, while St George’s College edged Arima North Secondary 2-0.

The clash between St Augustine and Toco Secondary was postponed to next week.

‘Machine’ stop Trinity.

Akim Andrews scored twice yesterday to lead the St Augustine “Green Machine” to an easy 2-0 win over Trinity College East in their top of the table BGT&T Secondary Schools Football League East Zone clash in St Augustine yesterday.

The home team played the better football throughout the contest and really should have gotten a few more goals but most of their attempts were either wide or lacked the power to trouble Leon Timothy in goal for Trinity.

After a couple of chances by both teams inside the first 15 minutes, Andrews went on the attack, collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area before showing off his dribbling skills, beating two Trinity East defenders before unleashing a low shot past Timothy.

St Augustine seemed a bit too relaxed after the opener but still Trinity could hardly get the ball close to goal, instead opting for long range efforts, most of which had little chance of getting past Romario Romain in goal for the home team.

It was almost inevitable that Andrews would find the back of the net again. This time it was in the 53rd minute.

Trinity East started to play better later in the second half, with substitutes Nkosi Felix and Dharon Sutherland looking dangerous coming down to the end, but they still could not break the Green Machine defence.

Trinity East might just have to tweak their strategy and maybe their starting line-up a bit but they look like they could be a surprise package later in the season.

Elsewhere in the East, defending champions Arima North beat Valencia 4-0 while San Juan North had three unanswered goals against El Dorado East.

It was a goal fest in Central with defending champions Carapichaima East beating Vishnu Boys 5-0 and Tabaquite Secondary defeating Couva West 11-0. The other game in Central saw Chaguanas North beating Presentation College Chaguanas 2-1.

Caps, Green Machine, Saints steer clear

Carapichaima East Secondary, reigning champion of the Big-Five competition, dominated from start to finish, to ease past newly-promoted Vishnu Boys, to steer clear at the top of the BgTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League, at Frederick Settlement Ground, Caroni.

Simon Joseph bagged a brace within 15 minutes of the match, before Kadiz Chandler added a third in the 38th minute to give Caps the 3-0 halftime advantage. Yaseen Rivas (53rd) and Larry Brown (78th) were both on target to add to the rout.

The win put Caps on six points from two wins, while Presentation College Chaguanas, winner of its opening round fixture against Vishnu slumped to a 2-1 loss to Chagauanas North. Chaguanas North stole all three points when Horacio Charles found the back of the net in added time. Couva North, which was not prepared to field a team on the opening round, did so yesterday but was humiliated 11-0 by Tabaquite, a team which lost 4-1 to the title-holder last weekend.
 
In the North Zone, at Serpentine Road, St Clair, St Mary’s College looked a team ready to return to the glory days, when it shook off a typically resiliant Diego Martin North to go top of the standings with its third win in as many matches, this time by a 3-1 scoreline.

The ever lively Rashad Hyacinth scored a wonderful shot and a penalty in either side of the half, respectively, before substitute winger Aaron Noel struck a left footed rocket to hand Diego Martin its second loss in two matches. Reigning league and Coca-Cola InterCol champion St Anthony’s College which won two of its matches to date was on a bye.

Down South, the reigning league champion Presentation College was on a bye, as St Benedict’s College and Shiva Boys both made up ground with their first wins of the campaign. Star forward Yafeu Rougier scored in the first minute to signal a one-sided affair at La Romain, which finished 4-1 in favour of St Benedict’s over winless Princes Town.

In the East Zone, league leader St Augustine maintained its perfect record, with a 2-0 win over Trinity East. National youth player Aikim Andrews was the difference between the two teams, with his goals in either.
 
Signal Hill holds Scarborough 1-1

Exciting action continued in the sister isle, when defending champion Scarborough Secondary was held to a 1-1 draw by rival Signal Hill Secondary at the Shaw Park Recreation Ground.

Kellon James put Scarborough ahead in the 16th minute when he headed in cross from the right hand side, before captain Shaquille Smith got the equalizer for Signal Hill in seven minutes later. Smith eluded several defenders and tapped the ball throughout the arms of the advancing keeper Shaheem Carrington.

A titanic clash of the two heavy weights of the Tobago zone was anticipated and the match lived up to expectation. Playing at its home ground, Scarborough enjoyed the better start with captain Chrislon Morgan leading the charge in the midfield while lanky defender Aaron Benjamin marshaled the back line.
 
For Signal Hill, the speedy Akeil Frank was on the attack and eluded many of his taller opponents. James made inroads in the Signal Hill defence from the left wing but had to be substituted with 39 minutes spent with a leg injury. The first half ended 1-1.

Scarborough continued to pressure its opposition on the resumption with Jase George tormenting Signal Hill custodian Njeri Fermin. But, the Bertille St Clair coached-Signal Hill team responded as Kyle Solomon and Devon Trim push for a second goal. Frank had a good chance but his powerful shot was saved by Carrington.

For Scarborough, George and Morgan led several counter attacks with Morgan’s long range shot in the 73rd minute. The effort went just high of the cross bar. George had his chances but was denied by Fermin. Scarborough had several corners in the final minutes but could not find the winner. Frank scored what Signal Hill thought was their winner in the 87th minute but was offside.

Speaking after the match Signal Hill’s Assistant coach Glenroy Irvine said he was disappointed with the draw. “We had no reason we could not get a second goal." Scarborough’s coach Daniel Ogwu was not pleased with the result. “We were poor in marking and gave Signal Hill too much room. In addition many of our players need to work on their fitness.

Kadeem Corbin and Kwesi Allen bagged a goal each on either side of the half to guide defending zonal champion St Anthony’s College to a famous 2-1 victory over an uninspired rival St Mary in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), yesterday.

The result added insult to injury for St Mary’s, which was leapfrogged by St Anthony’s. St Anthony’s enjoyed its third consecutive league win, while St Mary’s suffered its first loss in what has been a promising start to the campaign for coach Jason Edwards’ Saints.

Corbin scored in the 32nd minute to give the host team, St Anthony’s a 1-0 advantage at half time. Only moments into the second half, St Anthony’s made it 2-0 when Kwesi Allen, one of the players who remained from the National Coca-Cola InterCol winning team from last year.

St Mary’s subsequently found the perfect response through Rashad Hyacinth who tucked away a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, which was called for a hand-ball by Tigers defender Shaquille Huggins.

St Mary’s showed little life in its effort to level the scores, thus leaving Nigel Grosvenor’s St Anthony’s to enjoy yet another win, in what is shaping up to be an exiting year in North Zone football.

The other results in the zone saw Fatima College edge newly-promoted Malick Secondary 3-2, after the latter team came from 2-0 down to level the scores, while Queen’s Royal College eked out a 2-1 win over Diego Martin North Secondary.

Action in Tobago was also carded for yesterday, but referees were unavailable for the matches. The matches will instead be played today. Action will also resume in two other zones, the East and South Zones. The Central Zone will restart on Saturday with a full round of matches.

In the East, the last remaining team on a 100 per cent winning record, St Augustine Secondary, which is also the defending league champion will travel to the Arima Municipal Stadium to face rock bottom, Valencia Secondary, which remains without a point after three matches. South Zone champion Presentation, aiming to continue its 100 per cent winning record will also host a newly-promoted Mayaro Secondary at Union Hall.

Nah breda...ah have nothing against Central.  In-fact, I know Central quite well, however I just don't see the sense in two SOUTH based teams, with their fan-base BOTH primarily in South, playing a game versus each other all the way in Central. 

That's like St. Marys and Fatima playing against each other in Sande Grande...or Eldo and whatever team in de East ( ), playing against each other in Tobago.  Or two Central teams playing against each other all de way down in Moruga.

Now if they were integrating the matches where it was a South vs a CENTRAL team at the Ato Boldon stadium, then I could understand that.  But to have both teams vs each other so far from their fan-base, is quite puzzling.

I think the scene is Naps planned to use Mannie Ramjohn as home ground but due to issue with that field they have to play elsewhere.  but still strange that they end up at Ato Boldon stadium.  you would expect them to use skinner park or guaracara unless those grounds are unavailable today.

1978/79 a piece of art (some sort of machine) was created by some students, I believe Anthony Gray, Matamorrow and others from the team were involved. It was painted green and hence we have the green machine.
