San Jose acquires Seattle's Cordell Cato

San Jose deal for Seattle's Cordell Cato, sign rookies Muller, Jahn
MLSsoccer.com

The San Jose Earthquakes have admired midfielder Cordell Cato for a couple of years. On Friday, they finally locked him up officially.

The Quakes announced they dealt for the Trinidadian youth international, sending a fourth-round pick in the 2014 MLS Supplemental Draft to the Seattle Sounders in exchange. Cato (above) had been in San Jose camp this preseason with Seattle's permission; the Quakes also had him in briefly at the tail end of the 2011 season.

Cato, 20, had one assist in eight appearances during his first MLS season in 2012 for Seattle. The Trinidad and Tobago native also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 result for Sounders FC against the Earthquakes during US Open Cup play in July. All told, the speedy Trinidadian had one goal and two assists in four USOC matches last year.

Lovely news. For a while I thought Cordell had been manipulated by MLS conmen coaches who were way over his head but it is gratifying to see that he was outsmarting them with his cards kept close to his chest.
When he knew it was safe he bawl:  Hil low hangjack ... game!!  Well done my yout'. Now play yuh ball, build your resume' and put food on de table. See you in de CONCACAF line-up later this year as right wing option #2 for Kevon Carter.

San Jose Earthquakes' Cordell Cato offers blunt assessment of team's bench options
By Geoff Lepper (MLSsoccer.com)

Cordell Cato gave a blunt assessment when asked how he thought his San Jose Earthquakes debut went.

“Personally, I didn’t do anything,” Cato (above) told MLSsoccer.com. “And that’s not good for me.”

It wasn’t good for the Quakes, either. Coach Frank Yallop brought on second-year midfielders Sam Garza (in the 72nd minute) and Cato (79th), plus rookie forward Adam Jahn (83rd) in his attempt to wring a point from the team’s season-opening game last weekend.

None of the three made a substantial impact in what eventually went in the books as a 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake.

“João Plata comes on and makes a difference for them,” Yallop said, referring to the RSL substitute who delivered a game-winning assist just six minutes after coming on the pitch. “And I’m not having a go at the guys that come on [for us], but no one made a difference.”

With the ability last season to summon seasoned attackers from the bench, San Jose scored 40 goals in the 60th minute or later, 22 in the or beyond the 75th, and nine in second-half stoppage time. Even with attackers Marvin Chávez, Alan Gordon and Steven Lenhart unavailable Sunday, the Quakes were still happy with the number of significant scoring chances they generated in the first hour against RSL. One could argue that, with better finishing from Chris Wondolowski and Mike Fucito, San Jose would have been up by two or three goals at halftime.
