Stern injury scare.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago's record international goal-scorer, Stern John, could miss his country's crucial 2010 World Cup qualifier away to Guatemala after limping off the field during Southampton's English League Championship match away to Doncaster yesterday.

John, who has one goal so far this season, made his third start from eight possible outings for Southampton yesterday and limped off after just 14 minutes, although the South coast club went on to win 2-0 without him.

The gravity of his injury remains unknown but it would be a source of concern for the "Soca Warriors", who recalled the prolific striker after a four-match absence.

John scored two goals in his last two international appearances against Bermuda before falling out of favour with national coach Francisco Maturana. However, he was summoned to help rescue the country's World Cup campaign after a 1-1 home draw to Guatemala and a 3-0 loss away to the United States.

The former El Dorado schoolboy's tally of 69 goals from 104 appearances is the record for a Trinidad and Tobago player and the sixth highest in the history of international football.

In an exclusive interview last June, John told the Express his dream was to match the 77 goals scored by Brazilian legend, Pele, who is third on the list of record international scorers behind Iranian Ali Daei (109) and Hungarian Ferenc Puskas (84).

Trinidad and Tobago players had a quiet weekend in the British leagues.

Collin Samuel's St Johnstone defeated Dundee 2-0 in Scotland's First Division but the attacker was replaced without scoring after 69 minutes, while Jason Scotland played only the first half of Swansea's 4-0 League Championship loss away to Reading.

Carlos Edwards (Sunderland), Dwight Yorke (Sunderland), Russell Latapy (Falkirk), Silvio Spann (Wrexham) and Dennis Lawrence (Swansea) all failed to make the match day squad for their respective clubs. However, veteran goalkeeper Clayton Ince, who was also recalled to face Guatemala, saved a penalty in League One as Walsall defeated Carlisle 2-1.
