French football stars questioned by police over Paris prostitution ring

The reputation of France’s football team was under scrutiny yesterday when it emerged that two players had been questioned by police in connection with an investigation into a prostitution ring.
One of the players is alleged to have had sexual relations with a prostitute under the age of 18 — an offence which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
A third international is also likely to be summoned for questioning by police in Paris, according to l’Equipe, France’s sporting daily.
A judicial source confirmed the reports but refused to divulge the identity of the players concerned.
The source said a player had admitted having sex with a prostitute but denied knowing she was aged under 18 at the time.
The inquiry was launched by Judge Yves Dando, an investigating magistrate, following allegations that a Paris nightclub frequented by international football stars employed prostitutes.
A man accused of pimping activities was arrested last week.
L’Equipe said the French players were unlikely to be charged in connection with the case, but said the fallout could be ”costly”. It said they could face divorce proceedings and a loss of sponsorship.
Football stars frequent prostitutes in Paris in preference to other European cities because French privacy laws prevent the publication of kiss-and-tell stories, it said.
Jean-Pierre Escalettes, the president of the French Football Federation, said: ”An investigation is underway. At the moment it is not possible to make a comment.”
The revelation will inflict fresh damage to the image of France’s football team following a string of poor performances on the pitch and controversy surrounding its qualification for the World Cup.
France secured the draw it needed against the Republic of Ireland to reach the World Cup in South Africa this summer when Thierry Henry handled the ball before setting up the winning goal.

During police questioning Ribery, who is married and has two daughters, admitted having relations with the prostitute but said he did not know she was underage, a French judicial official told AFP on Monday.

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Bayern Munich closed ranks around Franck Ribery on Tuesday after an under-age call-girl scandal that exploded around the French midfielder on the eve of the Champions League semi-final against Lyon.
"This is, of course, an issue for us," said Bayern's director of sport Christian Nerlinger with his team set to face Lyon in Wednesday's last four first leg tie at Munich's Allianz Arena.
"But for the time being, we have to concentrate on the football, including Franck."
According to a French judicial official, the 27-year-old Ribery could face charges over alleged relations with an under-age girl after French police quizzed him as part of investigations into prostitution at a Paris nightclub.
Ribery trained with Bayern on Tuesday for the first time since the scandal broke on Sunday and he is expected to face Lyon on Wednesday, having been spoken to about the issue by Munich's bosses on Monday.
If charged and found guilty Ribery, who is married with two daughters, could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros (60,000 dollars).
Both of his team-mates Philipp Lahm and Daniel van Buyten were staying tight-lipped in Tuesday's pre-match press conference and admitted the club had instructed them to say as little as possible about the scandal.
"Franck trained very well, is really motivated and happy to be able to play," said van Buyten.
"In this important phase, it is important to concentrate completely on the game.
"He can think more clearly about the future after the match."
Ribery has a contract at Munich until June 2011 and he has said a decision about whether he will stay with Bayern is expected to be made soon, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both chasing his signature.
But Nerlinger said there is no sign of a decision being made by Ribery in the near future.
And Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he has heard nothing: "It's all quiet on the Ribery front" he said when asked about a possible transfer.
With head coach Louis van Gaal back in his native Holland due to a bereavement, assistant coach Andries Jonker took training on Tuesday and said Ribery was in contention to be selected.
"Franck Ribery has done well in training and it looks like he may be part of our team for Wednesday," he said

She said that Franck Ribery, 27, Karim Benzema, 22, and Sidney Govou, 30, had all treated her "with utter respect" and should be left alone.

Mr Ribery, a £40 million target for Chelsea, flew the young French Moroccan to a hotel in Germany, where he is currently a winger for Bayern Munich, last Spring.
He is then alleged to have paid her up to £2,000 for sex, something he continued to do back in France.
Miss Dehar was one of 18 girls quizzed during a police raid on the Café Zaman, a nightclub on the Champs Elysee, last week.
She has told vice squad officers that she had £2,000-a-night sex with all three players.
Prostitution is legal in France, but those selling sex must be over 18.
Mr Ribery, widely considered to be France's best player, told examining magistrates that he saw the girl over a number of months in 2009.
If charged and found guilty the Muslim convert faces a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of up to £40,000.
Judge Andre Dando has yet to decide if Mr Ribery is to be prosecuted but it remains a possibility,' said a judicial source in Paris.
It has been reported that Mr Ribery has admitted having sexual relationship with the girl over several months, but denies knowing she was underage. He could be in very serious trouble at the worst possible time in his career.
The same goes for the other players if they are found to have been knowingly sleeping with an underage prostitute. Mr Ribery is hoping to star in this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, and is also contemplating a lucrative move from Bayern Munich, to England, Spain or Italy.
He and the other three players were summoned to appear before Judge Dando after the swoop on the Zaman. It has now been shut by the authorities.
A man known as "Abou" from a hit French reality TV show was questioned about his alleged role in acting as a "pimp" to introduce players to the girls.
Mr Ribery, bought by Bayern for £25 million in 2007, converted to Islam to marry his French Algerian wife Wahiba. The couple have two daughters.
Mr Govou, a winger with Lyon, is single but has a five-year-old daughter with his ex-girlfriend, Pascale. The two men will meet in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday in Munich.
Mr Benzema, who plays for Real Madrid and is a target for Manchester United, is believed to be single.
Despite the new revelations, Sophie Bottai, Mr Ribery's lawyer, continued to deny that her client had slept with the girl.
This affair does not concern my client and could only, in the worst case, involve his private life alone,' she said. Lawyers for Mr Govou, and Mr Benzema also deny any wrongdoing.
While international players for teams like England have frequently been involved in scandals involving sex and alcohol, this is the first time that the French have been connected with widespread sleaze allegations.
France was widely criticised last year for the way they qualified for the World Cup.
Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal star, was alleged to have handled the ball which set up a goal against Ireland which secured the draw France needed to go to South Africa, where the competition starts in June.
Miss Dehar celebrated her 18th birthday on February 28 this year. A picture taken on the day shows her with Mr Ribery.
According to police files, Miss Dehar started working as a prostitute in March 2008. She was making up to £20,000 a month sleeping with wide range of rich clients, especially multi-millionaire footballers.
They would fly her to destinations like Dubai, putting her up in five star hotels. She is also known to have attended European Cup football ties involving English clubs.
Detectives said Miss Dehar has co-operated fully with their enquiries, and did not face criminal charges herself.
She is currently staying with friends in Paris.
Despite the scandal, indications are that Mr Ribery's wife will stand by him. She has told his club that she will attend tonight's European Cup tie against Lyon.

France's national football team was further drawn into the sex scandal involving Franck Ribéry yesterday after two more players' names were cited in connection with an investigation into underage prostitution.
Unnamed judicial sources told the French media that Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid forward, and Hatem Ben Arfa, a striker for Marseille, are expected to be questioned in coming days as "witnesses" in the inquiry.
The scandal engulfing Les Bleus, which began when Ribéry was questioned by police in connection with a prostitution ring, also deepened after judicial sources said the 27-year-old had admitted having sex with a 17-year-old prostitute but denied having known she was underage. In France it is illegal to buy sex from someone under 18.
The Bayern Munich forward's lawyer, Sophie Bottai, has insisted that, while the footballer did provide witness testimony to French investigators looking into a ring allegedly run out of a Paris nightclub, he was being heard simply as a witness and not as a suspect.
No charges were filed against him, said Bottai, and he was not held in police custody.
However, the rumours swirling around the team have not ceased since reports surfaced at the weekend that Ribéry and his fellow player Sidney Govou had been questioned by French investigators.
On 12 April police had searched the Zaman Café, a restaurant and nightclub on the Champs Elyseés, and arrested a dozen people, among them prostitutes and a man suspected of being their pimp.
Refusing to say whether or not his client had been questioned by police, Govou's lawyer, Thierry Braillard, said the 30-year-old had "never set foot" in the Zaman.
But the player's name has been cited repeatedly in connection with the investigation being led by the investigating judge André Dando. A judicial source said that, while his married team-mate Ribéry remained a witness in the affair, "it is up to the judge to decided whether to formally investigate him [Ribéry] or not".
In France, prostitution is legal but several activities surrounding it are against the law. If found guilty of paying an underage sex worker, a client could go to prison for three years and be fined up to €45,000 (£39,000).
Yesterday the two other players drawn into the scandal vehemently denied involvement in alleged activities at the Zaman, which has now been shut down. "It's absolutely not me," Ben Arfa told L'Equipe TV. Even if his client were summoned by the police tomorrow, added his lawyer, "that would change nothing".
Benzema's agent, Karim Djaziri, also spoke out in defence of his client. "Karim has not been questioned. He has nothing to do with this affair," he told LePost.fr.
As speculation mounted in Paris, the French football federation (FFF) issued a terse statement saying it was aware of the investigation and certain players' involvement "as mere witnesses". But it said it would "refrain from all comment" until the police had done their job.

France international footballers Frank Ribery and Karim Benzema have been charged with having had sex with an under-age prostitute, as magistrates cracked down on an alleged celebrity vice ring.
The indictments issued Tuesday are the first stage of a formal judicial investigation that could lead to a trial and, if convicted, both players face up to three years in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros (58,000 dollars).
Ribery, who plays for German giants Bayern Munich, arrived at the offices of the investigating magistrates at the Palace of Justice in Paris in handcuffs, according to several witnesses, but he was freed without preconditions after the hearing.

I know nothing of French law but proving that they knew she was underage (then again, I don't know under french law if they have to do that), would be tough for any prosecution....They can charge them and make an issue but getting a conviction is another story. Where is Bake n Shark, when we need him?

Benzema denies under-age prostitute allegations
French striker Karim Benzema denies the charges of soliciting an under-age prostitute that have been formally made against him, his lawyer Sylvain Cormier said on Wednesday.
"Karim Benzema formally denies the allegations made against him," Cormier told AFP, adding that he enjoyed the full support of his club, Real Madrid.
"He disputes what (the prostitute) Zahia D said. He has not had sexual relations with her. There is no reason why the player's words should count less than those of Zahia D."

No comment... not even because of the gravity of the situation, but because those involved, need to have their privacy respected too, even throughout this "ordeal"...
I will say this though, France really did not "perform" at the World Cup, and even had to "cheat" to get there... They looked "tired" and "not like themselves"... But that's just an observation...

(REUTERS) - The trial of French football stars Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema over claims they paid for sex with an underage call girl was adjourned for procedural reasons yesterday until 2014
Benzema, a Real Madrid striker, and Ribery, a Bayern Munich winger, are to be tried on charges of paying Zahia Dehar, a prostitute-turned-fashion muse, for sex in 2008 and 2009, when she was only 16, then 17 years old. Neither footballer showed up in court yesterday.
The pair, both players in France's national squad, have been under investigation since 2010 over the affair. They risk up to three years in jail and fines of 45 000 euros ($60 000) if found guilty of soliciting the services of an underage prostitute.
At yesterday’s hearing, Ribery's lawyer asked the Paris court to seize the Constitutional Council to interpret a clause in the penal code that forbids soliciting underage prostitutes. He argued that it was too vague to be used against his client.
The court found his objection serious enough to adjourn the trial until January 20, 2014, allowing time for the issue to be put to a higher court and possibly passed to the Supreme Court.
In France, paying for sex is not illegal but underage prostitution is, along with pimping.
Ribery and Benzema's lawyers had called for the case to be dropped, saying their clients did not know Dehar was a minor.
According to court documents, the Algerian-born Dehar became a prostitute around 15 or 16 but would tell clients she was 18.
Known for her ample curves and a mane of peroxide blonde hair, the case has won her fame and a new career as a protégée of designer Karl Lagerfeld, under whose guidance she has launched a lingerie line. She did not attend yesterday's hearing.
Ribery's lawyer welcomed the trial's adjournment but Benzema's lawyer said the wait was "painful" for his client.
