SWO previews T&T's Gold Cup tournament.
By Inshan Mohammed.

The Soca Warriors Online (SWO) previews the Trinidad and Tobago national football team as they prepare to embark on their journey to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament hosted in the United States.

There are 12 nations in the Gold Cup finals, which kicks off on 7 July 2013 at the Rose Bowl. Only four will be eliminated in the first round while eight teams will progress to the quarterfinal stage.

The Soca Warriors are in Group B alongside El Salvador, Haiti and Honduras, and are schedule to open its campaign in Harrison, New Jersey against El Salvador from 7pm EDT. Then they will continue their journey with a meet against Caribbean neighbours Haiti at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami (same time) before closing off their Group B fixture against Honduras (9:30pm - EDT) at the BBVA Compass Stadium in humid Houston, Texas where the weather can easily reach in the 100s.

A look at T&T’s opponents.

El Salvador is coached by Peruvian born Agustin Castillo who led his team to its eighth Gold Cup after finishing in third place at the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana earlier this year. El Salvador, which snapped a six-game winless streak in the tournament, equaled its best ever finish at the Copa Centroamericana, clinching third place for a fifth time (1995, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2013).

They qualified for the Gold Cup with a 1-1 tie versus Honduras, a 0-0 draw with Panama, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica and rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Gold Cup newcomers Belize to clinched a spot at CONCACAF’s most prestigious tournament.

The team consists of local league players as well as a few foreign-based players including national team veteran Mark Lester Blanco (Marathon/Honduras), U.S-born Arturo Alvarez (Pacos de Ferreira/Portugal, on-loan to Videoton FC/Hungary), Rafael Burgos (Kecskeméti/Hungary) and Rodolfo Zelaya (Alania/Russia). While the young midfield duo of Darwin Ceren and Richard Menjivar has proven they are also worthy ball winners and worth their place on the team. Striker Rafael Burgos seems to be the danger-man for the Cuscatlecos.

The Central Americans have played a series of friendly games against South American opponents in preparations for the 2013 Gold Cup edition. In this series they fell 3-0 to Paraguay, then were destroyed 5-0 by Ecuador and were narrowly defeat 2-1 against Venezuela after taking a 1-0 lead. The South Americans rallied back and scored from the spot to seal the win.

Haiti on the other hand has had a very encouraging Gold Cup buildup, particularly in the later part of their series of warm up matches. They were narrowly defeated 2-1 by the world's number one ranked team Spain and then drew 2-2 with European giants Italy a few days later to close off their mini U.S and Brazilian tour in their spectacular tune up series. However, the team is yet to win a single game in 6 outings since 2013. They were defeated by Chile (3-0), Bolivia (2-1), Oman (3-0) and Dominican Republic (3-1) in their earlier fixtures.

Now despite being one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, then down a further $700 thousand USD when it was reported that former CONCACAF president Jack Warner stole over $700K from Haiti relief fund- Haiti still managed to have gotten under their belts the best preparations in T&T's Group leading up to the Gold Cup. Haiti is currently in Canada on a training camp where they will be playing 4 locally based teams including MLS club Montreal Impact before heading to New York for kick-off against Honduras.

The team is coached by Cuban-born Israel Blake Cantero and finished 3rd in the Caribbean Cup to clinched an automatic Gold Cup spot.

Haiti’s team also consist of a mixture of local, US based and European based players including Peguero Jean Philippe (Don Bosco Pétion-Ville/Haiti), Kervens Belfort (Le Mans FC/France), left-back Wilde-Donald Guerrier (América des Cayes/Haiti), Jeff Louis (AS Nancy Lorraine/France), Yves Desmarets (CF Os Belenenses/Portugal), Jean-Marc Alexandre (Orlando City/USA), Jean-Sony Alcenat (Petrolul Ploieşti/Romania) and off course the talented midfielder Peterson Joseph (Sporting Kansas City/USA) who would be remembered for the show he put on display during the 2006 CFU U-16 tournament in T&T; which helped the Haitians win the tournament. As a result Haiti qualified for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship in South Korea and while T&T also qualified Haiti were Champions. Current senior team players Robert Primus, Marcus Joseph, Akeem Adams, Sean De Silva, Kevin Molino, Sheldon Bateau and Daneil Cyrus were all part of that T&T team.

Honduras meanwhile remains one of T&T's biggest threats. The Central Americans are currently involved in the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers and will more than likely use the Gold Cup as preparation for its upcoming Qualifier matches in September against Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Jamaica respectively.

The current 4th place Hexagonal team is coached by Colombian-born Luis Fernando Suárez and got to the Gold Cup with a 1-1 ties against; El Salvador and Panama, slip pass Belize (1-0) before falling 1-0 to Costa Rica. Honduras still did enough to warrant a place at this summer’s tournament.

They were however more fortunate in the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers thus far with a shocking 2-1 victory over the United States and a 2-2 tie against Mexico. They then stumbled against Panama (2-0), Costa Rica (1-0) and Israel (2-0, friendly) before bouncing back to defeat the Reggae Boyz (2-0).

New England Revolution striker Jerry Bengtson has been in form for them while veteran striker Carlo Costly (Veria/Greece), Roger Rojas (Olimpia/Honduras) and Oscar Garcia (Houston Dynamo/USA) add extra firepower. Víctor Bernárdez (San Jose Earthquakes/USA) and Emilio Izaguirre (Celtic/Scotland) will more than likely help anchor their defense. Hard kicking defender Maynor Figueroa (Hull City/England), Wilson Palacios (Stoke City/England) and Andy Najar (Anderlecht/Belgium) will help stabilized the midfield. Juan Carlos Garcia (Olimpia) is also a player to watch and will be remembered for his stunning overhead kick goal against the Americans. The Hondurans stunned the US 2-1 in that game.

Trinidad and Tobago is currently in a transitional phase as former Canada men’s senior head coach and Trinidad born Stephen Hart was recently appointed head coach of T&T’s National Team. Hart will be inheriting a squad that qualified for the Gold Cup after finishing runners-up in the 2012 Caribbean Cup; under the guidance of former interim head coaches Jamaal Shabazz and Hutson Charles.

In preparation for the Gold Cup tournament T&T has had a series of poor results. The Soca Warriors lost to Peru 2-0 and 3-0 respectively, drew 0-0 with Belize and fell at the hands of Romania (4-0) and Estonia (1-0).

What's quite disturbing is that T&T has not scored a single goal in 570 minutes and counting. They also conceded 10 in the process. The goal-shy team has been remarkably inconsistent and only through the dedication of certain players T&T has managed to keep things respectable over the course of those five games.

Rightfully, most of those games were used as experiments to test the newcomers and future Soca Warriors. However, the former dual coaches took too long to settle on a team and with less than a month to go before the Gold Cup, T&T was still left looking for answers particularly upfront. Not to mention that the formation and the tactical approach had been worrying.

In all fairness to the staff though many players who were initially selected opted out off games and left the team tin on talent and experience. To the outside observer it may appear that those players were just waiting for the actual Gold Cup to contribute, while some seems totally disinterested (i:e: Keon Daniel).

Whatever the reason for opting out of national duty, T&T Gold Cup preparation has been on a roller-coaster ride. The team is not playing fluid football, the chemistry is just not there and with the influx of 10 or more foreign based players hoping to jell with one possible friendly game left; T&T could very well be in for a rude awakening.

T&T vs the 3.

Starting with Haiti, T&T has won 4, loss 2 and drew once in its last seven games against the Haitians. Since 2007 T&T has won 3, draw 2 and lost once against El Salvador, the single defeat was at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Honduras however, has managed to get the better of T&T in their last 6 meetings including; 4 losses, 2 draws and a single victory.  This victory occurred by way of the infamous 1-0 win in San Pedro Sula during a 2001 World Cup Qualifier, a heartbreaking result that eliminated Honduras from the competition. Legendary striker Stern John got the single item that did the damage.

At the Gold Cup only El Salvador may hold a psychological advantage over T&T. The Central Americans defeated T&T 2-1 at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup and 3-2 at the 1996 CONCACAF Gold Cup. T&T has never met Haiti at this level and is also the more experience team at this tournament. Against Honduras though, T&T has met them three times in this competition, they drew 1-1 in 2005, T&T lost 2-0 in a 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup playoff match and then got the better of the Los Catrachos (3-1) at the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

My prediction.

T&T 1 v El Salvador 0 - T&T will need to put everything into this game. It’s their first and they would want to set the pace for the remainder of the tournament. A win will also give the Warriors a confidence booster, while a draw is also a very realistic out come as El Salvador is known for scoring late.

T&T 2 v Haiti 0 - This would be the turning point for T&T and with a psychological advantage over the Haitians, T&T should have no problem getting past them providing they make the right tactical changes.

T&T 0 v Honduras 2 - The pace of Honduras is always a threat to T&T, not to mention the size and strength of players like Víctor Bernárdez is more than enough to contain any of T&T’s attackers. Keeper and team captain Noel Valladares is also very experienced between the sticks so it may take a herculean effort to beat him.

The Players.

Goalkeepers

Cleon John – He has been in form for his club and he should make an ideal backup for T&T's number one.

Jan-Michael Williams - T&T's deserved number one keeper.

Marvin Phillips – The Central F.C. shot-stopper did himself no favors in the game against Romania.

Defenders

Sheldon Bateau – He has shown great improvement since he first began playing in Europe and has a never say die attitude.

Seon Power – He is another defender who has shown tremendous improvement.  His all heart displays on the field can be a value asset to the team.

Justin Hoyte – He makes excellent overlapping runs, and could combine well with Carlos Edwards on the right. He does the simple things other T&T players seem to ignore, and plays one touch football.

Carlyle Mitchell – He is technically our best center back.

Daneil Cyrus – He is a solid defender and has the capabilities to play smarter football. Cyrus is a diamond in the rough.

Aubrey David – He makes poor decisions with the ball, but has the capabilities to play good football. David has a good attitude and work-rate.

Carlos Edwards - If fit, he will be a force to be reckoned with at the Gold Cup.

Radanfah Abu Bakr – He reads the game well, but his pace is worrying.

Robert Primus – He showed a lot of promise and was tipped to be one of our top central defenders, but he has been on the injury list every time he gets a T&T call-up.

Curtis Gonzales and Kareem Moses – They are suitable back-ups.

Midfielders

Andre Boucaud – He is an all-rounder and one of T&T's key men in central midfield. He looked great alongside Theobald in the Estonia friendly.

Joevin Jones – He tends to overdo it at times, but is an excellent player. The only T&T player (Guerra and Boucaud apart) who isn't afraid to shoot the ball from distance or take on players which can be utilized to open play for other players.

Khaleem Hyland - Once committed, he can be one of our top performers at the Gold Cup.

Hughtun Hector – He can be T&T's secret weapon. Nuff said!

Kevin Molino – Though he can be pushed off the ball easily at time, Molino has an excellent work rate, is a smart player and can be utilized as a wing-man, striker or a roaming midfielder.

Densill Theobald – He’s an excellent passer, but needs to be more consistent and show more aggression in his attacking and overall play. His experience and communication on the field is bar none, and he’s perfect captain material.

Christopher Birchall - Once up to the task, he is essential to the team. He does not look happy around the national team though and has a worrying pace to his game.

Ataullah Guerra – He is talented, but needs to be consistent and tends to daydream at times. He has a nice shot, can take free kicks well and is not afraid to throw in a tackle now and again.

Kevon Carter – He has good pace, but needs to be smarter especially around the box and should take more shots on goal.

Keon Daniel – When committed to national duty he can be a valuable asset, but he has proven not to be a player to rely on at the moment.

Strikers

Kenwyne Jones – He can be the key man in attack, but maybe he just doesn't know it as yet. He can also be effective playing alongside other strikers/players who posses a different style, for example a Stern John and Arnold Dwarika combination. If our wingers can produce reliable crosses to him, he can wreak havoc with his deadly headers.

Cornell Glen - Once fit, he is technically our best striker. He can play the hold up role and can combine will with Kenwyne Jones if needed.

Jamal Gay – He is not the best finisher, but has excellent work rate and like Jones gives T&T a physical presence up front. He fights hard, but maybe too hard.

Darryl Roberts – He is also not the best finisher but shows heart and an excellent work-rate.

Devorn Jorsling  - He is yet to make any impact outside of the Caribbean. Like Jones and Gay, Jorsling needs service. T&T's strikers are not mobile and rely heavily on service which makes them easy to mark.

Shahdon Winchester – He is another decent player, but may not be ready for a starting role as yet.

Strange omissions

Lester Peltier – He is suspected of being blacklisted? As our most inform scorer, leaving him out of the squad could be T&T’s lost.

Julius James – His omission from the team is a strange one. He performs well for his club and should have been in T&T's setup from the get-go.

Cordell Cato – He is another player who should have been in T&T's setup from the get-go.  It’s now too late to see what Cato can offer, but he should have been selected for at least one or two of T&T’s Gold Cup warm up friendlies. He plays a great super-sub role and is creative enough to ruffle a few feathers.  His pace is also frightening.

Jlloyd Samuel – He is currently our best left-back and would have helped solidify T&T’s defense.

Kendall Jagdeosingh and Willis Plaza – Commitment to their club duties may be the reason we have not seen much of them lately.

About the Gold Cup

The champion of the 2013 Gold Cup will qualify for a playoff match to decide which CONCACAF national team will represent the region in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup™. The champion of the 2015 Gold Cup will become the second team to qualify for the single-game playoff, scheduled to take place in the second semester of that same year at a site to be determined. In the event that the same nation emerges victorious at both the 2013 and 2015 editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, that team will qualify directly for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Taking place every two years, the Gold Cup has become the region's most popular soccer event, routinely drawing capacity crowds and millions of TV viewers throughout North, Central America and the Caribbean.

Group matches will take place July 7-16 in nine cities across the U.S. with Quarterfinal matches following on July 20 in Atlanta and July 21 in Baltimore. Semifinal matches will be played on July 24 in Arlington, Texas, and the championship is set for Soldier Field in Chicago on July 28.

All games will be broadcasted live on TV in the United States. FOX Sports Media Group, for the first time ever, is televising all 25 matches of the event, with three slated to be shown on FOX Sports, including the final on Sunday, July 28 (4:00 PM ET) from historic Soldier Field in Chicago. Long-time broadcast partner Univison will again televise all games on its Spanish-language network platforms with 22 of them on open air channels Univision and UniMas and 3 group stage matches on Univision Deportes.

The Soca Warriors Online (SWO) will be there in numbers, stay tuned.

David Muhammad is now the team's manager and he carries a grudge against Jlloyd Samuel so his days as a national player is over.

Glad to see many Joe Public players here, Carlyle Mitchell, Kenwyne Jones, Seon Power, Marvin Phillip, Daneil Cyrus, Aubrey David, Kareem Moses and Densill Theobald.

It shows how well JPFC did in their time in T&T Pro League that after soon a long lay off their players are still here.

There are 12 nations in the Gold Cup finals, which kicks off on 7 July 2013 at the Rose Bowl. Only three will be eliminated in the first round while nine teams will progress to the quarterfinal stage

Excellent preview Flex, well researched but one correction since 4 teams will be eliminated and 8 teams to progress to the quarters.

Ah love it!!

I think we will like as fans what Mr Hart will try to implement, the question is, will the guys be able to excute in order to get results on the short term, although I'm sure it will work for us best in the long term.
My supposition is based in how I saw Mr Hart play when he was 40. If he get the boys to play a similar style with the excuberance of youth, we all will see, how the fella from newsday does put it ? ammm... TT will rise again   ;D

I praying for it anyway...the country needs some positive and necessary distraction, while those that are able, work hard to fix things.

Good luck and stay the course everybody..rough seas will always be in our journey ahead

Cornell Glen (Shillong Lajong—India), Kenwyne Jones (Stoke City—England), Shahdon Winchester (FF Jaro—Finland).

Bostock and Daniel not serious about T&T or else they woulda be on de team.

Willis Plaza and Jagdeosingh was not named on the team.

Most of the missing players will join the team in Miami (for a camp) along with Beenhakker who did not want to come to T&T and wanted SH to meet the players and have his training without to much distraction.

You know what I found to be interesting about this group. Every team and everyone feels this is the easiest group. Honduras fans and other Gold cup teams think that's the easiest group, according to most people, Honduras should beat everyone easily and top the group with no problems. Salvador fans think that T&T and Haiti are easy 3 points, they only need worry about Honduras. Here in the T&T thread, they also feel the same way as the Salvadorian. Here the prediction is , T&T will shut out and blank both Haiti and Salvador, only Honduras will gave them trouble. Although the Haitian are not predicting any wins, they're coming with confidence, they feel if they can play Spain toes-to-toes and play Italy equally (i.e European champion and Vice-champion), they should be able to handle Caribbean teams and central Caribbean teams at ease as well)..

Here is my prediction:

I think the fact that Honduras is bringing their B teams, this is going to be a very competitive group, Im expecting a lot of  tie games. I think 3 teams will come the group, I think the best third will come out this group as well. About three weeks ago before Haiti played Spain and Italy, most people were predicting 5-8 goal win for Spain & 3-5 goals win for Italy, the outcome were quite different than the predictions..Another one for you, the Jamaican were predicting  CFU final between Antigua and JA, and the other qualifiers were suppose to be Guyana and Grenada, all 4 didn't even make it of their group, let alone wining CFU and qualify for the gold cup..
Well, after all games are played on the field not through words of mouth..

Did Spain and Italy use their best players, how many subs did they make and how was the intensity ?

It would be nice to see the Caribbean teams progress.

Having the games in NY and Miami should help?

T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago senior men’s football team will depart today for the United States, where they will compete at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which takes place in the United States from July 7-28.

The T&T team will enter a training camp in Fort Lauderdale from June 30 to July 6 in the lead up to the opening match against El Salvador on July 8 in New Jersey. T&T also faces Haiti (July 12) in Miami and Honduras three days later (July 15).

T&T head coach Stephen Hart has finalised a 23-man squad for the upcoming 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Hart disclosed his selection to the players—who had been engaged in a training camp for the past few days—on Thursday evening. He said he was satisfied that the squad was a balanced one.

“The attitude of the players has been impressive. The objective was to select a balanced squad and one that may allow for flexibility in the manner in which we approach games,” Hart told TTFA Media.

“Collectively we need to remain focused on the process that will allow us to play effective football and help the country advance beyond the group phase.,” Hart added

“We are well aware of the challenges, none of these teams will be less than difficult opponents, but we will continue to prepare with a committed desire,” Hart said.

Title: Group B preview
Post by: truehaitian on July 05, 2013, 10:50:37 AM
Gold Cup Group B preview: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago
JULY 4, 2013
Nicholas Rosano
MLSsoccer.com

Group A | Group B | Group C

El Salvador

Head coach: Agustín Castillo (Peru)

MLS connections: Steve Purdy (Chivas USA)

Previous Gold Cup appearances: 7; quarterfinalists in 2002, 2003, 2011

Los Cuscatlecos registered a commendable accomplishment by getting out of the group stage in 2011, just the third time they have done so. Though recently a fringe player among Central American teams, they should be able to take advantage of a wide-open group behind strong favorites Honduras. The young squad (average age: 24.2 years old) features one MLS player – Chivas USA defender Purdy, though a significant number of players developed in the US, including goalkeeper Derby Carrillo, midfielders Richard Menjivar and Gerson Mayen and forward Dustin Corea. Former Chivas USA attacking midfielder Osael Romero is the most experienced player on the squad, with 74 caps and 16 goals for the national team.

Haiti

Head coach: Israel Blake Cantero (Cuba)

MLS connections: Mechack Jerome (Sporting KC), Peterson Joseph (Sporting KC)

Previous Gold Cup appearances: 4; quarterfinalists in 2002, 2009

It's difficult to know what to make of the Haiti squad, which is drawn from players across the globe and features just eight of the 23 (including all three goalkeepers) playing their club football in their home country. With an experienced backline anchored by veteran defender Jean-Jacques Pierre – one of four squad members who plies his trade in France's top two professional divisions – and a team brimming with confidence after holding their own in friendlies against Spain (2-1 loss) and Italy (2-2 draw) in June, an appearance by Les Grenadiers in the knockout stages isn't too farfetched a notion.

Honduras

Head coach: Luis Fernando Suárez (Colombia)

MLS connections: Marvin Chávez (San Jose Earthquakes), Mario Martínez (Seattle Sounders)

Previous Gold Cup appearances: 10; runners-up in 1991

Honduras have firmly established themselves as a power in CONCACAF on the back of qualification for the 2010 World Cup and consecutive Gold Cup semifinal appearances in 2009 and 2011. Though Los Catrachos opted to leave many of the Premier League and MLS-based stars that have featured so far in their World Cup qualifying campaign, they still boast a formidable squad including MLS-based wingers Chávez and Martínez and a smattering of European-based talent including former D.C. United wide man Andy Najar, now with Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht. The squad still boasts a good mix of youth and experience, and enough talent to match their recent Gold Cup showings.

Trinidad and Tobago

Head coach: Stephen Hart (T&T)

MLS connections: Carlyle Mitchell (Vancouver Whitecaps), Keon Daniel (Philadelphia Union)

Gold Cup appearances: 7; semifinalists in 2000

The Soca Warriors are back after missing out on the past two Gold Cups and looking very different from the team representing the smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup, in 2006. Former Canada national team coach Hart will take the helm of his native country after spending the last 25 years coaching in Canada, and will count on players plucked from club sides as far off as Turkey, Kazakhstan, Thailand and India. Stoke City forward Kenwyne Jones and former Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte, now with Middlesbrough, lead the England-based contingent and could be key to T&T's knockout-round hopes, while reigning USL PRO MVP Kevin Molino will look to add to his burgeoning international experience. Former MLS players on the squad include Daneil Cyrus (Sporting KC), Chris Birchall (LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew) and Cornell Glen (New York, Dallas, Columbus, Colorado, LA, San Jose).

Group Dynamic

Honduras are the clear favorites, here, but after that things are wide open. The pressure will be on T&T to get early results against El Salvador and Haiti early on, knowing that the formidable Catrachos await at steamy BBVA Compass Stadium in the final group match. Haiti, on the other hand, could be in great shape if they can squeeze a point out of their own match against Honduras at Red Bull Arena in the first round of games, leaving Trinidad and Tobago in Miami – home to a Haitian diaspora of more than 100,000 – and El Salvador in Houston.

El Salvador should like their chances – they've shown in World Cup qualifying and the Copa Centroamericana that they go toe-to-toe with some of the more talented teams in Central America. Ultimately, they have enough talent on the roster to be able to go through alongside Honduras and one of the Caribbean teams – likely Haiti, considering the scheduling, rosters, and Haiti's "home" game in Miami.

The good news for whichever team finishes third? With the US and Costa Rica likely to put up big numbers against their Group C opponents, Cuba and Belize, it seems highly likely that the third-place team in a tight group such as this one will be one of the two third-place teams to earn a quarterfinal berth.
Title: CONCACAF Gold Cup Analysis: Group B
Post by: Tallman on July 07, 2013, 07:11:59 PM
CONCACAF Gold Cup Analysis: Group B
worldsoccertalk.com

With the CONCACAF Gold Cup scheduled to start on Sunday, here’s a preview of the teams in Group B.
This group includes Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago; games will be played in Harrison NJ, Miami and Houston.  This group lacks any of the notable heavyweights, although Honduras has established itself as one of Central America’s best teams.

We will also be privy to the participants of the Football War playing against each other for the first time in Gold Cup history. Back in 1969, Honduras and El Salvador briefly fought a war lasting 100 hours after El Salvador qualified for the 1970 World Cup at the expense of Honduras.  The games were marred by violence from the stands and made an already tense relationship between the countries even worse.  While the war itself was fought over multiple issues including immigration and land reform, the violence during the playoff against each other boiled over and gave the war its name.

Honduras
Having competed in two World Cups, one in 1982 and one in 2010, the country has had a lot of success and is a regular at the Gold Cup, often expected to win its group. The team, currently fourth in the World Cup qualifiers, is hoping to make the short trip to Brazil next year. Like many of their competitors vying for a place at the World Cup, Honduras has rested some of their key players.  Like Panama though, their team will be including some of their first team regulars.  In the last Gold Cup, Honduras stumbled their way into the semi-finals before losing to Mexico in extra time.  The team barely qualified from the group with only four points, then went on to beat Costa Rica in penalties before finally succumbing to Mexico.

Players to Watch – Honduras will be arriving without their Premier League stars such as Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa, and Roger Espinoza, but young prospect Roger Rojas will be leading the line.  He most recently scored against Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier and is one of the country’s up and coming stars often times compared to Humberto Suazo. He can be described as a fox in the box and his goal scoring record for club team Olimpia is phenomenal at a strike rate of one goal every two games.  Jorge Claros is another player to look out for, having spent the entire season on loan at Hibernian, he became a key member of the Edinburgh side.

El Salvador
Like Honduras, El Salvador has also qualified for the World Cup twice, but their successes are not as recent as those of Honduras. The country has suffered over the years and so has its football, but despite a full blown civil war, the nation still managed to qualify for the 1982 World Cup, however disappearing from the world stage since then. The war left the footballing institutions in tatters and it has taken a long time to rebuild teams and the infrastructure of the country to support a strong home based league.   The team has been able to hang on around the hinges of Central America’s elite, but are currently far behind Honduras and Costa Rica.  Their group is not regarded as the most difficult and they should be able to pick up points along the way. A strong showing at the Gold Cup could go a long way to improve football in a country that has always regarded the sport as a religion.

Players to Watch – Like many other teams, El Salvador have opted for youth and left some of their veterans at home.  At 27, Oscael Romero is one of the team’s more experienced players and his attacking prowess from the midfield will be much needed.  Rafael Burgos will be their man in front of goal, and his recent move to Hungarian side Keckskemeti has proved fruitful for him and tested his abilities on the European continent, a jump not often made by Salvadorian players.

Haiti
Haiti’s history is rich with football, but unfortunately immense poverty, corruption and the most recent earthquake have all hurt the footballing industry on the island nation.  Haiti qualified for the World Cup in 1974 after winning the first edition of the CONCACAF championship played in a league format, by topping the group in controversial fashion against Trinidad & Tobago.  The national team benefits from European based players, mostly in France but have yet to make a real push for the World Cup.  Haiti qualified for the Gold Cup by placing third in the Caribbean Cup and have been working hard to achieve this feat.  They recently played Spain and Italy in high profile friendlies, and surprisingly drew the Italians.  Since their World Cup dreams have been shattered in the second round of World Cup qualifiers, placing behind their fellow island nation, Antigua and Barbuda, Haiti will coming into the tournament with a full squad and try to remedy some wrongs.

Players to Watch:  He most recently scored against Italy and despite struggling most of his career with injuries; Jean-Phillipe Peguero is the team’s top scorer with 21 goals in 26 games, a fantastic record.  Le Mans, the French second division side, brings two Haitians to the Gold Cup, but one is starting to outshine the other.  While Jean-Eudes Maurice started his career off brightly, he has since faded from the limelight, and is the second choice striker at the club behind Kervens Belfort, who has dominated headlines back home.  At the tender age of 21, he has become his country’s big hope.

Trinidad & Tobago
They have produced some marvelous footballers like Dwight Yorke, Stern John and Shaka Hislop, but the Soca Warriors have been waiting for that new generation of superstars to rise up.  The country does not have a large population and its domestic league is relatively poor compared to other CONCACAF teams.  Since the World Cup entry in 2006, the population and the FA have expected a lot from this team and they have since made the last stage of the qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup but fell woefully short for the World Cup 2014 campaign, losing in a must win game against Guyana in the second round. Trinidad is bringing a strong team to the Gold Cup in order to boost morale and prepare the players early on for the next World Cup.

Players to Watch:  Keon Daniel has had his ups and downs in his career and was not always first choice for the national team, especially after a small rift with the FA.  Since then, he has been able to remedy some of the problems and has also been in top form for the Philadelphia Union.  Kenwyne Jones has been Dwight Yorke’s natural successor and has made a name for himself in the Premier League as a traditional number 9.  With Mark Hughes at the helm at Stoke City, Jones will want to impress in order to gain a starting position with the team next season, especially after he may have lost some face since pig-head gate.

Prediction
This certainly is the most open ended group and any of the teams have a chance of advancing but Honduras is poised to top the table.  Their continued success in the CONCACAF region, combined with some experienced players and a strong home-based league makes them favorites.  The push for second will either be won by El Salvador or Trinidad & Tobago; they have not faced each other recently, but Trinidad is arriving with a stronger and more experienced squad, eager to impress after a poor World Cup qualification campaign. Haiti may be everyone’s secret team due to recent humanitarian disasters, but the island nation will be out of its depth in this group and may have to settle for a point.

Yes, we have to try and enjoy the game. It is a privilege to be able to participate in a gold cup again. This will not be easy and considering the low we reached in the jackulito, rodent, scyamps era it would be progress if we beat any of these fit, well practiced teams who have had MANY months of preparation / head-start compared to us, as we scrambled to have a management team at the last hour. Good luck T&T. Prayers that Cornell keeps injury free and that Molino magic returns to his boots as the player with the million dullah legs. Power to you Power. It eh go be easy with teams like Haiti that held Italy to a 2-2 draw and barely pipped by Spain 2-1.
