Uncapped Cottrell in World T20 side

West Indies will be without Kieron Pollard in their World Twenty20 defence after he was ruled out due to his ongoing recovery from a knee injury. All 13 men named for the Twenty20s against Ireland this month were included in the World Twenty20 squad, along with the batsman Johnson Charles and fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell, while there was no room for Tino Best.

Cottrell, 24, has played one Test against India in Kolkata last year but is yet to make his debut in either of the shorter formats for West Indies. A left-arm fast bowler from Jamaica, he played for the Antigua Hawksbills at the Caribbean Premier League last year and collected eight wickets at 21.75 and an economy rate of 6.44.

Charles was also included after missing out on the Ireland games; he struggled on the recent limited-overs tour of New Zealand but has the potential to be a matchwinner at the top of the order. However, West Indies will be hurt by the absence of another clean striker, with Pollard still recovering from a knee injury he sustained last year.

Pollard injured his knee while playing in a charity football match and he said last month that he was holding out some hope of being available for the World T20, but his recovery did not prove quick enough to allow him to be considered for selection. West Indies are the reigning World T20 champions after beating hosts Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo in October 2012.

West Indies squad Darren Sammy (capt), Samuel Badree, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Krishmar Santokie, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith.

Three new faces for T20 defence

Sheldon Cottrell, Krishmar Santokie and Andre Fletcher are the new faces in the West Indies ICC (International Cricket Council) World Twenty20 squad for the March 16 to April 6 tournament, in Bangladesh.

The trio were the only changes to the West Indies 15-man squad that won the trophy in 2012, replacing Darren Bravo, Fidel Edwards and the injured Kieron Pollard.
Both wicket-keeper/batsman Fletcher and seam bowler Santokie have played international T20s for the regional side, while fast bowler Cottrell is yet to make his T20I debut for the West Indies.

Middle-order batsman Darren Bravo and pacer Edwards were both axed from the team, while Pollard and fast bowler Kemar Roach were not considered for selection due to continued rehabilitation from injury.
Pollard is recovering from a knee injury sustained late last year, and Roach is still trying to get over a shoulder injury.

The side will be led by Darren Sammy, and includes six Trinidad and Tobago players–mystery spinner Sunil Narine, all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, pacer Ravi Rampaul, leg-spinner Samuel Badree, wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin and batsman Lendl Simmons, who were all part of the side that won the trophy when they toppled hosts Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final, in Colombo, two years ago.

Also included in the squad are NAGICO Super50 MVP Dwayne Smith, hard-hitting opening batsman Chris Gayle, and the West Indies hero of the 2012 final, Marlon Samuels.

Gibson picks WI to retain T20 title
Published: Guardian
Wednesday, February 26, 2014

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has described his squad selected to defend the ICC T20 trophy in Bangladesh as one mixed with IPL superstars and exciting young players. Speaking yesterday as his team prepared to face England in the upcoming three-match ODIs series at the Sir Vivian Richards ground in Antigua, Gibson said the team will obviously miss the likes of Kieron Pollard who played a big part in the victory two years ago, but he was confident the players chosen would do well. “We will definitely miss Pollard but most of the players who were present when we won the title are still around, so we have the experience to retain our title.”

Gibson noted that his team has not set the world on fire within recent times but pointed out that several top players have been absent because of injury. “We did not do well in New Zealand we went there with a depleted team and the recent series against Ireland, we did well to turn the series around. Ireland played well and deserved their win.” Gibson said it was important for the West Indies to focus on the upcoming series against England which starts in Antigua on Friday.

“We have not played great One-day cricket recently but we need to treat this series as it is—a One-day series. We are still missing Chris Gayle who has a hip injury and of course Pollard but we have home advantage and need to make it count.” He noted both England and the West Indies were currently undergoing transition. “We are both in transition and therefore need to do well. The Windies arrived in Antigua on Monday afternoon and had a full training session yesterday morning at the match venue.

Sammy: Series is good 2015 prep
Story Created: Feb 27, 2014 at 12:12 AM ECT

West Indies T20 and Test captain Darren Sammy says the “We vs Them” series will serve as good preparation ahead of the ICC World Cups.
With less than a year to the global 50-over event in 2015, Sammy underlined the importance of the one-day series against England starting tomorrow to the West Indies.

“No doubt, you know, we still have a few players out injured but it is all preparation building into the World Cup and it shows when we prepare well we can go on to win World Cups and that’s what we did building up to 2012 for the T20, and there is no reason why we can’t do the same come 2015 in New Zealand and Australia ,” Sammy said, who is on the mend from an injury sustained during the recent New Zealand tour.
Sammy said he knew captain Dwayne Bravo had spoken about the West Indies preparing for those World Cups next year.

“So it’s where we start here. If we could play well and beat England here at home and continue the trend.... gain some confidence in trying to defend the T20 World Cup as well, look to improve our performances because that’s what the fans want us to do. They want us to win matches and us to represent the region well,” he said.
Sammy was happy to be back, but he admitted that the series against England would present “a massive challenge for us and we are all looking forward to doing the battle “We v Them”.

“The fans in Antigua have seen a lot of cricket,” Sammy added. “They have supported us very well so we are just asking them to come out and support us in large numbers. I know my good friend Chike will have his new stand and will be trying to get the public to come out and support the West Indies team. We know as players, we have to go out and contribute to that by the way we perform on the cricket field...Hopefully the whole Antigua population and the neighbouring islands coming to support the WI team, Sammy said.

Sammy said his role in the ODI side would be to ensure the West Indies complete their full innings or if the team is chasing, “ try to bring the team home.”
“My role as a bowler has always been to be economical whilst picking up wickets, and something I have done well throughout my career especially with the ball. So I am just looking to give the captain all the support he needs and looking to be a leader in the field and motivate the guys to go out and represent the region,” Sammy concluded.

IN A GOOD PLACE
Gibson, Sammy happy with World Cup preparation

No team has as yet repeated as World T20 champions. But the West Indies will leave the Caribbean confident that they are well equipped to have a shot at making history. That is according to both captain Darren Sammy and coach Ottis Gibson.
“We know it’s going to be a tough job to retain the World Cup, but I think as you’ve seen from the last three games we’ve played here over the last couple of days, we are in a good place at the moment,” Gibson told the media following his side’s five run defeat to England in the final match of their three-match T20 series at Kensington Oval, Barbados on Thursday.

That loss could not deny Sammy’s side a timely 2-1 series win ahead of the World T20 which starts in Bangladesh tomorrow. And Gibson was not overly concerned by it.
“I don’t see it (the loss to England) as a setback,” Gibson said, adding that while “losing is not a nice thing... we  look at the positives that came out of  the losing today (Thursday). It shows us that once we take care of the important stages of the game, how dangerous we can be as a side. So we move on from here full of confidence that we can go on and do something really special in Bangladesh. “
The coach noted that while the team lost early wickets, “we still took it down to the last over and could have won it off the last ball still, so the batting is in good shape.”

He added: It’s good to see Simmons getting runs. In the first game it was Marlon Samuels and Chris (Gayle); (Dwayne) Bravo and Sammy in the  middle game, so everybody is getting an opportunity to find some form and the group are gelling, so once we get over there and get ourselves settled--we have two practice games, another game against England also--the players are well aware of the opportunity in front of them to do something really special.”
Skipper Sammy was also positive about the readiness of his charges for their title defence.
“I think we are in pretty good shape,” he said.

“The best form of preparation sometimes could be match preparation and the T20 series against England we showed that we are ready. Bangladesh might be different conditions but we have the armoury to adjust. We’ve got two world class spinners, we got two fast bowlers in (Ravi) Rampaul and (Sheldon) Cottrell and (Krishmar) Santokie who just proved he’s world class as well.

When you look at the batting, we got Chris and Smith at the top, Marlon and Simmons in the middle and Bravo myself and Russell to finish the innings. Yes we had a big blow when we missed out on (Kieron) Pollard through injury but I think the team is well prepared, well balanced and once we go out to Bangladesh and play to our full potential, we stand a good chance of defending the title.”

West Indies will have a week in Bangladesh to prepare before their first match against India next Sunday.

Sammy says Windies well prepared for title defence
Published: Guardian
Saturday, March 15, 2014

BRIDGETOWN—

Captain Darren Sammy believes the West Indies side that will defend their World Twenty20 title in Bangladesh later this month, is much better equipped than the one which lifted the trophy two years ago in Sri Lanka. Speaking in Barbados yesterday hours before the squad’s departure, Sammy said his charges were more now more experienced, confident and better able to deal with the pressure of international tournaments. “There is always pressure, and especially now being World champions. (But) we’ve grown as a team, guys have gotten more exposure in Twenty20 cricket, we’re more experienced, and the belief in the team is quite high and it is a little more vocal than it was in 2012,” Sammy pointed out

“We knew we had a chance of winning but we believed it silently in the dressing room and amongst ourselves. Now we’ve shown that we can win and we know once we go out and execute (we can win). The guys are much more experienced, much more confident and we actually believe, and we are not afraid to say that we can go out and defend the title.” West Indies, who will start as one of the favourites in the March 16 to April 6 tournament, have been installed in a tough Group B that includes India, Australia, Pakistan and a yet-to-be determined qualifier. In the last T20 World Cup, West Indies stumbled through the early phases of the competition before finding form in the semifinals but Sammy believes the team will start the tournament this time with much-needed momentum.

I think we’re in pretty good shape. The best form of preparation is match preparation and in the T20 series against England we showed that we are ready,” he asserted.“Bangladesh will be different conditions but we have the armoury to adjust. We have two world class spinners (Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine), we’ve got two fast bowlers in (Ravi) Rampaul and (Sheldon) Cottrell and we’ve got (Krishmar) Santokie who just proved he’s world class as well. When you look at our batting, we’ve got Chris (Gayle) and (Dwayne) Smith at the top, Marlon (Samuels) and (Lendl) Simmons in the middle and (Dwayne) Bravo, myself and (Andre) Russell to finish the game.”

He added: “Yes we had a big blow when we missed out on (Kieron) Pollard because of injury but I think the team is well prepared, well balanced and once we go out to Bangladesh and play to our full potential, we stand a good chance of defending the title.” West Indies were impressive in their series triumph over England in recent days, winning the first two matches convincingly before narrowly losing the third. In all three games, West Indies displayed impressive firepower in their batting and sharpness in their bowling attack, sending a stern warning to their rivals ahead of the tournament.

Sammy said the key to success, however, was keeping to the basics and being consistent. “I just want us to continue improving as a team and being consistent. I heard a speech from Sir Garry (Sobers) last night and he spoke about being consistent and doing consistently well, and that’s what brings the success of a team when you go out and play,” the allrounder explained.

“For you to win games you have to be doing things consistently well. The basics of the game never change. For us as a team we just have to do that and try when we go out and play, remember the fans and be consistently good. Once we do that with the calibre players that we have, we stand a good chance of being successful.” He continued: “The mantra is still ‘one team, one goal, one people’ but the mission is not to win but it is to defend that title, because we won it the last time. It’s about retaining, it’s about defending this title.” (CMC)

Unbalanced Windies side off to World T20

The West Indies team is packed with Twenty20 (T20) stars but when you take a close examination of the squad, you realise that this team is unbalanced for the conditions they are going to meet in Bangladesh.

The problem I have with this team is the fact that it is too heavily packed with medium and fast bowlers. We are going to play in spin friendly conditions yet we are carrying Ravi Rampaul, Sheldon Cotterrell, Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Krishmar Santokie.

The spin options are the T&T pair of Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree. I would have liked to see Suliemann Benn or Nikita Miller in the mix. Even as a wild card I would have gone for Ashley Nurse, who also gives the ball a thump lower down the order.

My first choice addition to the list would have been the Barbadian and Red Steel left-arm orthodox spinner Benn. The lanky Benn has proven his worth in T20 cricket and God forbid anything goes wrong with Narine or Badree, it would have been excellent to have a man with an average of 27.60 and economy rate of 7.01 coming in. Apart from the bowling bias toward the medium and fast stuff, the squad remains a good one.

The batsmen have all picked themselves with consistent performances in T20 cricket. With Keiron Pollard out, the key to getting runs on the board, lies heavily with Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels—the star of the tournament last time around.

Both men seem to be coming into form and this is an ominous sign for the opposition. I think this team can go all the way if the good Lord smiles on us in terms of keeping away injuries. A good sign for the defending champions is the fact that most of the men are in form, coming out of the Ireland and England series, as well as the Nagico Super50. Another factor favouring the West Indies is the conditions they would meet in Bangladesh. In recent times, West Indian teams have been performing well in the subcontinent. The slow pitches tend to work well for the men in maroon, as they have the spin quality and the experience in the pace department to keep teams to average scores.

The team is now looking like a unit again, after all the problems in New Zealand toward the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the boys seem to be gelling well again and supporting each other. I looked on with keen interest at the leadership of Darren Sammy during the England series and he looked in control. What was good to see was the corporation between ODI captain Dwayne Bravo and himself.

Finally, let me wish the boys all the best in Bangladesh and as some of them told me—it’s a tour of duty. When men are on tours of duty, they battle fiercely with tremendous focus. If we get this from the West Indies then the (West Indies Cricket Board) staff would have to make room for another trophy in the cabinet in St John’s, Antigua.

Sammy arrives confident of a “Windies double” at World T20

DHAKA, Bangladesh –

West Indies captain Darren Sammy arrived in Bangladesh on Sunday full of confidence his team is capable of retaining their ICC World T20 title. The allrounder went one step further and boldly suggested it could be a “Windies double” as he believes the West Indies women’s team to also bring glory to the people of the region.
Sammy was speaking to members of the media shortly after arriving in Dhaka, where his team will play all their matches. The Women’s tournament will be played alongside the men’s tournament. Back in 2012 Sammy was at the helm when the Windies won their first ICC World T20 title in Sri Lanka. In that same tournament, the women reached the semi-finals.

“We have come here to win again. We believe we have the fire-power and the belief to do it again. No team has ever retained the ICC World T20 title and we want to be the first team to achieve that feat,” Sammy said. “We spoke to some of the girls and they are really upbeat....we are also backing our women’s team to do the job.
“They are a great group and we (men’s team) are backing them to also deliver and make it a ‘West Indies double’ here in Bangladesh. That would be great – something that has never been done before.”
West Indies will have their first warm-up match against England at Futullah on Tuesday afternoon. They begin their campaign against India in at the Sher-e-Bangla in Mirpur on March 23.

The Windies women will play a warm-up match against South Africa on Tuesday. Their first tournament match will be on March 24 against England at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Sammy also said that his team received great motivation when they met with cricket legends Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Vivian Richards at the recent launch of the West Indies Retired Players Foundation.

The function, which was held in Barbados last Thursday after they beat England in the three-match T20 series at Kensington Oval, was also the official departure reception for the team.
“I just want us to continue improving as a team and being consistent,” Sammy said. “In the Caribbean we are blessed to have some of the greatest players and it was a real inspiration to be with them before we left home. They gave us some words of encouragement and that was a boost for the team.

“I heard a speech from Sir Garry and he spoke about being consistent and doing consistently well, and that's what brings the success of a team when you go out and play. For you to win games, you have to be doing things consistently well. The basics of the game never change.”

Sammy added: “For us as a team, we just have to do that and try when we go out and play, remember the fans and be consistently good. Once we do that with the calibre players that we have, we stand a good chance of being successful.”

World Twenty20: Restrained Chris Gayle represents big gamble for West Indies
Reuters | Mar 26, 2014, 02.29 PM IST

DHAKA:

The good news for rival bowlers is Chris Gayle has abandoned his onslaught-from-the outset approach. The bad news is, the West Indies opener has decided to delay his big hitting so he can explode in the later stages.

Many observers believe West Indies are taking a huge gamble by taming a wild force with a strategy that could make or break their World Twenty20 title defence in Bangladesh.

The swashbuckling opener recently joked he made Sohag Gazi a household name by hitting the Bangladeshi off-spinner for a six off the first ball of a Test match in Dhaka.

More than a year later, Gayle's recent batting philosophy has been to shun such extravagance and preserve his aggression for a delayed assault.

Worryingly for his team, the ploy has not really worked so far in the sport's showcase Twenty20 tournament.

Gayle managed just about run-a-ball scores of 34 and 48 in the defeat against India and the victory against Bangladesh, respectively. He was dropped twice in the match against India, the first before he could open his account.

Those runs came at a strike rate that fails to justify the flamboyant southpaw's stature as arguably the most destructive batsman in Twenty20 cricket.

Also, it has shifted the onus on his opening partner Dwayne Smith to provide the flying start Gayle had performed until his batting approached changed.

The policy led to a rare sight as Smith outscored Gayle in Tuesday's 73-run victory against Bangladesh, falling after a quickfire 72 while his opening partner was still pottering around for his first 19 runs off 29 balls.

"I don't know if it's a strategy or not," Smith said after Tuesday's win.

"My aim is to get off a good start and that's how I play. If Chris is working himself in, at least there will be no pressure on him if I score freely."

Gayle's sheer presence, that expressionless countenance, has intimidated rival bowlers but West Indies would badly need him to hit the kind of form he is famous for if they are to retain their World Twenty20 title.

Smith was certain Gayle would be back to his explosive best before long.

"I'm sure that Chris will get around at some point in this tournament because he is batting through the first six and he will be batting through the first 10 overs," Smith added.

"I'm sure at some point he is going to get off and get some good scores."

Netherlands threw it all away at the end with some poor shot selection......it was there for the taking.
Good come-back by SA, but they really shouldn't be praised; they were expected to destroy this Dutch team.

Windies looking for dominance against Aussies, says Skipper

 DHAKA, Bangladesh –

World Champions West Indies will look for a repeat of their ICC World T20 2012 semi-final performance when they meet Australia in Friday’s third match of the ongoing ICC World T20 2014 tournament.

Two years ago, West Indies made over 200 in their 20 overs to hammer the Aussies by 74 runs as they went on to win the title. Skipper Darren Sammy said on Thursday that they will be looking similar dominance when the two teams meet at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

First ball is 3:30 pm (5:30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 am Jamaica Time).

“Once we play to our full potential – so far in this tournament, we have not played to our full potential – we will be very destructive. We were destructive in that semi-final last World Cup,” Sammy said.

The captain was speaking to reporters after a full training session on Thursday morning at the Dhaka Academy.

“I expect a tough match. It will be a good contest. We have Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine are Number 2 and Number 1 in the world in T20 bowling rankings cricket at the moment. Badree has been getting wickets up front for us in the first six overs. It is something we are looking he will hopefully continue doing. It won’t be an easy game.”

Looking ahead to Friday, the captain added: “The Australians are a good side. We give them that respect. But at the end of the day, it is another cricket match where it is a contest between bat and ball. The team that handles the pressure better and executes properly normally comes out on top. And we are hoping that it will be us tomorrow.”
Sammy also touched on the form of openers Dwayne Smith and Chris Gayle. In the opening match against India they added a solid partnership wicket and then posted 97 in the victory over Bangladesh.

“Chris is hitting the ball well, (Dwayne) Smith is hitting the ball well. They have put on good runs. Chris has not been his explosive self that we are used to and we still scored 170 against Bangladesh. Once we back ourselves and play like we know how to play T20, things will go according to plan.”

Australia have won the toss and elect to bat "Good wicket, nice to get some runs on the board and hopefully it'll be enough," says George Bailey. James Faulkner and James Muirhead in the XI. West Indies are unchanged
Darren Sammy wanted to bat as well. He's dug into Australia straight up saying there's been a lot of talk, but it's time for action now and that's what West Indies are concentrating on. He says they have some "skillful" bowlers and would look to restrict them to under 150

7.05 pm As expected, it was a power-packed performance and West Indies had outgunned the pre-tournament favourites by so much that Australia's chances of qualifying to the semi-finals have taken a huge hit. There's another game coming up to keep the cricket high going, so do tune in to India v Bangladesh. Thank you for your company and comments, this is Alagappan Muthu saying Goodnight and Good Luck...

"We have not won the tournament, its just a game against Australia but we were pumped up for this," says Darren Sammy, the Man of the Match "They played well and a couple of our boelers bowled well. We backed ourselves to score 180-odd. Chris and Smith set us up and we are really pumped up for the win. It was really nice to see Faulkner bowling the last over. A lot of things were said before this match and you never wake up a sleeping lion [Chris Gayle]"

"I'd take 178, but we didn't bat particularly well" says George Bailey. "We lost too many wickets in the middle. You gotta take the good with the bat, we have some guys in great form and the West Indies bowled really well. You hope one goes to hand and the challenge for both teams was that short boundary. It was going to be difficult for the guy bowling from the end where that winds up on the on side. [Sammy] He stuck to his plans and hit it nice and hard"

Bangladesh is such shit

For real....I don't know if to feel sorry for them or if to be angry at them...I just don't understand how they operate. You would think  playing at home would have given them some inspiration  ::)
A few years ago I was of the opinion that Bangladesh was a team on the rise; they had a lot of young players with potential.....those players have since gotten older and have delivered very little on their promise. I feel sorry for their fans though...so much hope and expectation but always almost followed by disappointment.

Windies go all out to secure semi-final berth
Story Created: Mar 31, 2014 at 8:44 PM ECT
Express

Title-holders West Indies have already had some big games in the World Twenty20 Championship but none bigger than today’s do-or-die clash with Pakistan. They had to beat Bangladesh in their second game after losing their opener to India, and then were faced with a must-win scenario against Australia in order to stay in the tournament. Now, with the semi-finals within touching distance, the Windies intend to throw everything at Pakistan as they look to secure a place in the final four.

“It’s a do or die for us. [It’s] go big or go home. This is an important game against Pakistan, who are playing very well at the moment. But as we said before we left home, we came here to retain the title, so we will give this all we have. We’re going to do everything to defend our title,” captain Darren Sammy said yesterday.
“The thing is when we left home, we said by the time we reach the final Super 10 match against Pakistan, we’ll know exactly what we need to do, and now we’re only going to focus on what we have to do against Pakistan to win.”

West Indies will meet a Pakistan side that have seemingly cast aside their unpredictable moniker, and played outstandingly in the tournament. Their only blemish—like West Indies—came at the hands of unbeaten India in their opening match but since then they have beaten Australia and Bangladesh to be level on four points with their Caribbean rivals.
They boast a powerful all-round side, with opener Ahmed Shehzad, middle order batsman Umar Akmal and lower order hitter Shahid Afridi capable of destroying any attack. Likewise, their bowling is spearheaded by the deadly off-spin duo of Saeed Ajmal and Mohammed Hafeez, backed up by sharp seamer Umar Gul.

West Indies will look to counter with the likes of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo in the runs department, with off-spinner Sunil Narine, leg-spinner Samuel Badree and rookie left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie, shouldering the burden of the bowling attack.
Sammy said he was under no illusions about the nature of the task before his side, noting that his batsmen needed to improve their game. “Whatever approach we come with, we definitely have to rotate the strike. It is something we’ve been working on and hopefully we can rotate the strike and get the boundaries in between, and play much better against spin than we’ve done in the past,”

“We’ve prepared ourselves, and we knew coming down to our fourth game it would be Pakistan and we knew exactly what we have to do, and spin is something that we have to conquer in that game. “With that said, we back ourselves, put our runs on the board and defend it, or if it’s the other way around, restrict them to a low total and chase it down like we did against Australia, but hopefully it’s not 170 we chase.”

While the Caribbean celebrated the victory as if they had retained their title, Sammy warned that West Indies needed to re-focus. “The people of the Caribbean really enjoyed the win. But they are also aware that we are not into the semis as well, and the message is just to go out and do well against Pakistan and make sure we get to the semis and take it from there.”

TEAMS:

WEST INDIES – Darren Sammy (captain), Samuel Badree, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Krishmar Santokie, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith.

PAKISTAN – Mohammad Hafeez (captain), Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gul, Sharjeel Khan, Sohaib Maqsood, Junaid Khan, Bilawal Bhatti, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Akmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Mohammad Talha, Kamran Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad.

7.00pm

Toss West Indies win the toss and they will bat. Sammy says he'd like to put runs on the board, and put Pakistan under pressure while chasing. West Indies unchanged.
Hafeez: "It is always difficult to set a total on a track like this." Pakistan are also unchanged.
Rk: "@Chris - I would hope good WI turn up so that we have a great match. Dont expect to win because other team plays bad."

6.45pm

Pakistan and West Indies have never played each other in the World T20, and have played only three T20s against each other.
Chris: "As a West Indian fan I hope "bad Pakistan" shows up today. Rally!"
Arnold: "For this game, for Windies I would drop Ramdin and let Simmons take the glove and bring in Rampaul."

Bilal: "The message before the start of the match from Pakistani players and fans to West Indies would be: " We sure DO like you mates , don't know who said no one likes you" " Ha, ha!

MeenaSathya: "In my WI team, i would prefer J Charles over AD Russell. I didnt remember any big performance from Russell, but J Charles played well in the limited opportunities he got. "
Some strong quotes from Darren Sammy a day ahead of the game. "Whatever approach we come with, we definitely have to rotate the strike. I think the game against India, where it was spin-oriented, probably 60% of the balls were dot balls, so it's something we've been working on." Will they be able to nudge the spinners around, and pile the pressure on themselves.

Cricket: England coach shares fans' anger

By Chris Allen

4:15 AM Wednesday Apr 2, 2014

England went down to the Netherlands by 45 runs in their last group one match in the Super-10 stage, a repeat of their 2009 World Twenty20 defeat on home ground.

Stuart Broad's men had threatened to be the dark horses in the group after beating pre-tournament favourites Sri Lanka but their exit capped a miserable winter in which they were also crushed 5-0 in the Ashes in Australia.

Giles said having no chance of qualifying for the semis may have induced complacency in the team.

"Certainly complacency would be one of them. You can't hide from it and it was embarrassing," he said after the match. England restricted the Netherlands to 133-5 in their 20 overs but were never in the chase, bowled out for 88 in 17.4 overs.

Giles said he understood and shared the anger of the fans.

"Absolutely I share that anger. There are a lot of emotions flying at the moment.

"We are human beings and when that's your line of work you should be angry and I understand why the supporters are angry. All we can do is apologise to the people watching at home."

The coach also gave the Dutch their due.

"With all due respect to the Dutch because they played some good cricket in this competition. Clearly every time they go out and play, they play with pride and passion."

Giles said England started on the wrong note. "The messages were the same before the game and through the game. We had the same meetings and talked about concentrating on the job that needed to be done and then at half time making sure guys are in the right space," he said.

"I thought we started the game poorly, I thought we were slow in the field and lacked intensity for them to be 47 for one after six overs."

Giles said there had to be some personal responsibility among the players.

"Don't get me wrong, when the guys go out there, there has to be some personal responsibility there as well, but we are a team, we stick together and we have all lost that match.

"It should hurt those guys as much as it hurts me and I hope it does." AAP

Hafeez says sorry to fans for the manner of defeat
PTI | Apr 1, 2014, 10.59 PM IST

MIRPUR:

Pakistan skipper Mohammed Hafeez apologised to the fans for not showing enough stomach for fight against the West Indies as they crashed to a huge 84-run defeat to make an exit from the ICC World Twenty20, on Tuesday.

It is first time that Pakistan have not made it to the last-four stage of the tournament since its inception in 2007.

Hafeez said this was not the best of performance from Pakistan as they were all out for a paltry 82, chasing 167 to qualify for the semifinals.

"Today we did not play well. We were a little bit panicky early in the chase. Not the best of display. I want to thank fans for supporting us and as a team we want to say sorry. This is part of the game and Inshallah we will come back hard," Hafeez said after the defeat.

He said everything changed in the last four overs of the West Indies innings and when Dwyane Bravo and skipper Darren Sammy went berserk.

"We didn't play well in the final four overs, credit to West Indies. Sammy and Bravo finished well for them. In the first 16 overs we bowled very well, but they got the momentum in the final four overs. They took the game away from us," Hafeez said.

West Indies skipper Sammy said they knew Pakistan were struggling while chasing totals, so all they wanted was a decent total on the board.

"Australia was a pumped-up West Indies, today was a more focussed West Indies. They (Pakistan) haven't chased very well. We were looking for 160, we had the momentum going into the dressing room at the break," he said.

Talking about his own batting, Sammy said,"It's about backing yourself, I have worked a lot with the batting coach, it is just about being confident, I'm trying to do whatever is necessary to get the team over the line."

Man-of-the-match Dwayne Bravo said "he did not expect such an easy win."

"We have a bowling line-up that can defend any total. Pakistan had our batting in a bit of a bother, but we bat deep," he said.

Asked who would have been his choice for the MoM award, Bravo said, "I would have tied with myself, Sammy and Badree."

Windies romp into semis

A few years ago a batsman decided to send down some leg breaks one Sunday morning at Syne Village, Penal, just to try something, yesterday the same man was the West Indies leg-spinning hero, as the regional side brushed aside Pakistan with their biggest ever T20 win, to move into the semifinals of the ICC World T20 tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Samuel Badree spun his magic against Pakistan grabbing three for ten off four overs as they crashed to 82 all out, chasing a victory target of 167. After Badree’s work, the West Indies team and another 16,000 Bangladeshis were celebrating, as the team everyone loves —barring James Faulkner, marched on to meet Sri Lanka in the semis.

With the West Indies down in the dumps at 81 for five Dwayne Bravo and skipper Darren Sammy came to the party. They hammered 82 runs from the final five overs, as the white ball which was so difficult to hit, soon started taking a beating. The two right handers—as they did to Australia—mercilessly beat the Pakistanis as they were left to retrieve balls with the help of the crowd. Bravo spanked 46 off 26 balls and Sammy finished 42 not out off 20, as West Indies closed on 166 for six after 20 overs. Fast forward half an hour and the game was effectively over. West Indies defeating Pakistan with spin in Asia, who would have thought—however this “confident group” believes they can achieve the impossible and this they did. With Sammy and Bravo shifting the momentum, the 15-minute break between innings was too little for Pakistan to recover, as they batted like a team already beaten.

Krishmar Santokie sent back Ahmed Shehzad, a centurion in the last match for a “duck” to start the action. At this point, the Penal poacher Badree took over, sending back Kamran Akmal (0), his brother Umar Akmal (1) and Shoaib Malik (2) as the men in green slumped to 13 for four. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine then got wickets as well as Pakistan’s score read 42 for six and fans started leaving to beat the Dhaka traffic.Earlier, Pakistan controlled the game from the toss to over number 15 with their spinners having a stranglehold on the normally free-scoring West Indians. Skipper Mohammad Hafeez robbed the huge crowd on hand of their evening’s entertainment when he sent back the big left hander Chris Gayle via neat stumping from Kamran Akmal for five.
Following him back to the dug out was Dwayne Smith who snicked one from Sohail Tanvir to Akmal.

With two down including Gayle, West Indies were looking wobbly and the crowd had grown quiet. Lendl Simmons then got them going again with typical free-spirited Caribbean batting. His form was catching on to the out-of-sorts Marlon Samuels who also started to thrill with exciting strokeplay. However, indecision between the sticks would result in Simmons being run out for 31 from 29-balls. This precipitated a collapse that saw three wickets falling for 20 runs. Samuels left for 20 and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin perished for five as the West Indies crumbled to 81 for five.

All was not lost as the two heroes from the last game were at the crease together. What they showed differently from the frenetic chase against the Aussies was that they could also build an innings. They took their time and by over number 17 they went on the war path, much to the delight of the Bangladeshis who had packed the stadium.

Three overs of mayhem saw the ball climb as high as the Dhaka skyscrapers as West Indies realised 57 from their final 18 balls. Bravo started to share the licks with successive sixes off Umar Gul in an over that cost 17 runs. With the innings running away from him Hafeez called on his general Saed Ajmal and he too was hammered. The off-spinner was carved for 21 runs from the 19th over. With six balls to go, the Caribbean gladiators were running for everything. Sammy finished the job nicely with a hurricane 42 not out off 20 balls with five fours and two sixes. At the end of the West Indian flags were in demand and those who got waved them in front of the Grand Stand as they waited for the Windies team to show at the back of the pavilion.

Sri Lanka break finals jinx, thrash India to win World T20 title
Nitin Naik,TNN | Apr 7, 2014, 12.22 AM IST

DHAKA:

The finals hoodoo has been broken. Sri Lankan supporters can finally smile. Their golden generation of cricketers, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and captain for the last three matches Lasith Malinga have something to show for their efforts.

After coming second-best in the last four ICC finals, the Islanders managed to grab their hands on the big prize by winning the fifth edition of the ICC World T20 with a six-wicket win over India at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.

They got there with 13 balls to spare. Set to chase a modest 131, Lanka were guided by Kumar Sangakkara, who struck a majestic, unbeaten 52 (35 balls; 6x4, 1x6) to see them home. Man of the Match Sangakkara, playing his last T20 International, was well assisted by Thisara Perera, who belted 21 not out in 14 balls (1x4, 2x6) as the duo added 54 runs in 5.2 overs on a wicket that wasn't easy to bat on, with the ball stopping on the batsmen. Perera was drafted into the side at the expense of leg-spinner Sekkuge Prasanna, and what a call it turned out to be.

India, who were unchanged from the side that beat South Africa in the semis, looked to be back in the game when Amit Mishra dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne caught behind for just two. At that stage, Sri Lanka were 78 for 2 needing 53 runs off 45 balls. Sangakkara's wicket then could have swung the game in India's favour but the experienced southpaw held one end up and as the target drew closer, started hitting out. Perera carted a few big ones too.

Credit should also be given to another great servant of Sri Lankan cricket, Mahela Jayawardene, who too was playing his last T20 International. He soaked in the pressure after the early loss of Kushal Perera and hit a run-a-ball 24 ensured they got some stability back in the innings.

The Indian spinners R Ashwin and Amit Mishra bowled well, but with only 130 to defend, their threat was negated as it was always about a couple of good overs and one decent partnership for Sri Lanka. India's dream of becoming the first team to win the World T20 twice was shattered by a clinical display from their opponents.

Earlier, the game began 40 minutes late after a sharp shower delayed proceedings. India, after being put in to bat, could score just 130 for 4 despite an electric knock from Virat Kohli 77 (58b; 5x4, 4x6). Kohli survived a dropped chance from the Sri Lankan skipper Lasith Malinga at mid-wicket off Rangana Herath when he was on 11. He capitalized on that and smashed Herath for two sixes and hit two more off Kulasekara.

He added 60 runs for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma 29 (26b; 3x4), who struggled to get going. At 64/2 in 10.4 overs and batsmen like Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni left to accompany Kohli, India were looking at a score of 160-plus, which could have been a match-winning one.

However, Yuvraj singh struggled to get going and his 11 (21 balls) affected the momentum of the Indian innings. MS Dhoni too seemed to be under pressure because of that knock and instead of giving the well-set Kohli more of the strike, he attempted wild slogs and swishes and failed to connect any of them as he scored 4 not out (7 balls).

Kohli, named Man of the Tournament for his tally of 319 runs, would have traded the prize for the trophy as an Indian victory would have made him the first cricketer to have won all ICC events - the Under-19 WC (2008), ICC World Cup (2011), ICC Champions Trophy (2013) and the ICC World T20 (2014). He will have to wait for the tournament to come to India two years later.

WHAT HURT INDIA IN THE FINAL

* Virat, who was going great guns, faced only 8 balls in the last four overs as Yuvraj and Dhoni failed to rotate the strike
* Yuvraj, Dhoni together played 28 balls for 15 runs at a stage when India needed fours and sixes
* Indian innings had as many as 48 dot balls
* Amit Mishra, who had an off day, could not make any inroads in the middle overs when India needed wickets.
