Republic football camp kicks off
(Newsday)

Wednesday, April 19 2006

“WORK hard, play hard,” was the advice given by facilitator Joel Hyacenth at the opening of the Republic Cup Youth Football Camp at Republic Bank Staff Sports Club, 8th Avenue Extension, Barataria yesterday.

Hyacenth, a director of the Skeene/Hyacenth Football Institute, referred to the camp and their 67 participants as the “foundation of TT football” and complimented Republic Bank on their vision.

He asked the youngsters to be disciplined through the course of the five-day programme as this was a key factor in the development of their potential and the fine-tuning of their ability.

Lincoln Phillips, Technical Director, TT Football Federation (TTFF) also had a few wise words for the coaches and campers. “Now that we are going to the World Cup, the expectations of coaches and players have changed,” he said.

A former outstanding national goalkeeper, Phillips, nicknamed “Tiger” who spearheads the TTFF’s Goal 2014 development programme, said the TTFF is committed to the development of the national youth teams and highlighted the importance of such undertakings to the national game.

Phillips commended Republic on the interest they have shown.

In his address Derwin Howell, Republic Bank General Manager, Commercial and Retail Banking, said, “I must applaud the youngsters here today.

You have chosen to spend a chunk of your Easter vacation, improving your football skills. This shows dedication, commitment to excellence and above all an unquenchable passion for football.”

“These traits are the very same ones that our Soca Warriors have in spades and will no doubt display for the entire world come June 10”, he added.

He urged the participants to make the most of the camp and to enjoy themselves.

Before they began their first day at camp Catherine Ashby, Project Officer, Group Corporate Communications, left the young players with the words Chinese scholar Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

In its sixth year the camp has attracted 62 boys and five girls.

Aranjuez ground problems but PYM football underway
(Newsday)

Wednesday, April 19 2006

THIS year’s 40th edition of the Progressive Youth Movement (PYM) Football League will kick off on Sunday.

To date, ten teams have been registered for action in the Over-40 Division vying for over $15,000 in prize money.

Teams registered are: Moosai’s Sports, North/Eastern Police, Crab Connection, Agent Orange, Sweaters, Wee Ting, San Juan San Juan, Carenage United, one love and TSTT Sports. But despite the kick-off, the league still face the problems of uneven fields. According to PYM president Bissoon Birsingh, it is his understanding the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation approved the allocation for the repair of the grounds, but there has been no action taken so far.

He said a letter was sent to Prime Minister Patrick Manning seeking his assistance in the matter, and for the completion of facilities at the pavilion, including the installation of water, lighting, changing rooms and toilets/bathrooms and the re-painting of the upper floor.

Marcelle Academy, Defence Force shine in Republic Cup

Clint Marcelle Football Academy, Defence Force and Trendsetter Hawks were among those taking the top honours as the 14th edition of the Republic Bank RightStart Cup Youth Football Tournament came to an interesting and entertaining conclusion on Sunday at the Queen's Park Savannah.

In the biggest upset of the day, a thrilling showdown between Under-10 giants SKHY Football Club and Trendsetter Hawks ended with Hawks being the overall division champs, just edging their opponents.

SKHY Under-12 fared better in their bid for championship gold as they beat Stern John Skills Award Programme All Stars (SJSAP) in the final.

Under-15 and Under-17 action was equally entertaining as Clint Marcelle Football Academy trumped crowd favourites Jabloteh, while Defence Force got the better of Best Warriors 2000.

Not to be outdone by all the Boys' action, the Under-17 Girls category was well represented by teams like Trincity Nationals, Petrotrin F.C., St. Clair Coaching School and Champion Girls.

When the proverbial dust had settled, Trincity Nationals had risen to the top with an impressive unbeaten record.

In the Special Olympics category, returning champions, the National Centre for People with Disabilities (NCPD) successfully defended their title..

Over 500 junior footballers took part in the tournament this year.

And in his opening remarks Sunday, General Manager, Commercial and Retail Banking, Derwin Howell told the successful teams: "You are now one step closer to getting all the respect that a championship team deserves. And this is the prize that we, at Republic Bank, want you to always keep your eyes on.

"This is the prize that we offer most to you, with our RightStart Cup, because we want you to get a good taste of success and the respect that comes with it. What is more, is that we want you to remain hungry for that success and respect."

Teams from around the country competed for over $50,000 in prizes, as well as 120 scholarships valued at $200,000 to the Bank's Annual RightStart Cup Youth Football Camp.

The week long camp, which was hosted by the Bank in conjunction with the SHKY Football Club, catered for the needs of the nations young football enthusiasts in an attempt to help empower them through sport.

In his closing address, Republic Banks General Manager, Information Technology Management, Anthony Wong, challenged the participants to take one valuable lesson learnt at the camp and apply it to their daily lives.

Try hard to live this change and you will see the difference it makes to you and your friends, Wong said. He also congratulated them on their achievements and encouraged them to continue to strive for excellence.

Earlier in the programme, there was a parenting session, facilitated by Pearl Gonzales, Performance Management Consultant of Element P Performance Consultants, and distribution of certificates to each participant.

There were also special prizes presented to participants who excelled in their various age categories. Republic Bank congratulated all the participants who successfully graduated from the camp and wish them all the best in their future sporting endeavours.

$.5 million invested in youth skills development.
By: Nicholas Clarke (Guardian).

Republic Bank Limited has invested approximately $500,000 into the staging of its 16th Annual Republic Right Start Cup Youth Football Tournament, which is expected to attract over 2400 players from 200 teams from across the country.

This was announced during a press conference at the Banks head office on Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain yesterday. Lasting three weekends from July 9-24, the tournament will be held in five different locations throughout T&T (The Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Old Moosai Grounds in Tunapuna, the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella and the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago.)

Over $50,000 in prizes will be up for grabs in the four categories (Boys Under 12 and Under 17 and Girls Under 12 and Under 17) while the 400 finalists will each be given a $50 Right Start savings account.

There will also be prizes for Most Valuable Player, Most Disciplined Player and Most Promising Player with the winners automatically qualifying to participate in the annual week long Republic Cup Youth Football Camp.

Republic Bank Limiteds General Manager, Risk Management Roopnarine Oumade Singh said the company hoped to have a positive influence on the tournaments participants through sports and by introducing them to financial responsibility.

We know that sport improves our youngsters social development skills, hones their ability to manage success and failure, develops a respect for self and others, as well as promotes a sense of fair play, he said.

A major part of the reason why we give these savings accounts comes from the fact that we wanted, in addition to providing a fun, fast-paced and rewarding tournament, to inculcate habits of saving and financial responsibility within these budding minds simultaneously.

The tournament and camp are part of the Banks Power to Make to Make a Difference social development programme. Launched in 2003, the initiative has pledged $40 million over the next five years to various community projects and NGOs, focusing largely on the positive development of the countrys youth through educational, cultural and sporting initiatives.

Talent scouts to monitor Republic Cup.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Talent scouts from the T&T Football Association (TTFA) will pay a keen interest in this years rebranded Republic Cup National Youth Football League, from August 4 to September 1.

The competition was officially launched at Republic Banks head office, Park Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday and several changes were made to the tournament which was formerly known at the Republic Youth Cup.

The changes were made in a collaboration with the TTFA.

Two of the three divisions, the U-13 and U-15, will play in an 11-a-side format on a standard international fields, as mandated by the TTFA.

The U-11 division will be played on a half sized field with smaller goal posts, while girls will be allowed to play along with the boys in the U-11 and U-13 divisions.

The TTFA has indicated that every child in the competition will become a registered footballer under the local governing body, thus giving all participants an advantage of being recognised and an opportunity to make it through the ranks in national youth teams.

Speaking at the launch, TTFA media officer Shaun Fuentes reminded the audience of the next months inaugural Concacaf Under-15 Championship in the Cayman Islands.

The TTFA will have coaches visit some of the matches as part of the talent search. Indeed, a demonstration of our seriousness in youth football has already been shown by an early visit, in his first assignment since returning to out shores, by Leo Beenhakker and head coach Stephen Hart to the U-15 national team training sessions, in Woodford Lodge, Chaguanas, on Tuesday.

Currently, as we are here, they are involved in a meeting with technical director Anton Corneal on the way forward, said Fuentes.

Organisers are hoping to attract 90 teams from six zones, with Tobago expected to produce 18 teams.

The winner in each of the three divisions will walk away with $5,000 cash, medals and a trophy. The runner-up and the third placed finisher will receive $3,000 and $2,000, respectively, along with medals.

Group marketing and communications manager at Republic Bank, Anna-Maria Garcia Brooks, said the rebranded competition, which has previously attracted over 2,000 young footballers annually, will work alongside All Sport Promotions and the TTFA to take our involvement in football to the next level and to align it even closer to the needs of the sport and the plans for the governing body in T&T.

Garcia-Brooks said the league will eventually be a natural feeder into the more established National Super League and TT Pro League competitions.

The first weekend of competition will be held on August 3-4, and will continue every weekend at different zones until the final day on September 1. Registration, which is $500 per team will close on August 2.

Republic Bank Cup goes national.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

The annual Republic Bank Cup has evolved continually over a 17-year existence.

The annual youth football competition has now been re-branded as the Republic Bank National Youth Football League and  will for the first time be an 11-a-side football competition. The inaugural competition was launched in 1996 as a five-a-side competition,  the Republic Youth Cup, before later converting  into the seven-a-side version that ran up to 2012.

Yesterday, the 11-a-side version, the Republic Bank National Youth Football League, was launched at Republic Banks Park Street headquarters. The competition is a collaboration between sponsors Republic Bank, organisers All Sport Promotions and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA).

Representing All Sport Promotions,  Anthony Harford announced that the change in format was as a result of a TTFA directive that they convert to the 11-a-side version of football. The idea is to allow young footballers to seamlessly fit into  proper and structured football, and thus aid the development of T&T football.

Harford  expects 90 teams to compete in the 2013 competition, 18 of which will be from Tobago.  The tournament will be organised in the  under-11, under-13 and under-15 age groups. There will be no specific competition for girls. However, in keeping with international FIFA rules,  teams can field both male and female players in the lower divisions, under-11 and under-13.

It was announced that close to $500,000 in sponsorship was being pumped into the competition by Republic Bank, and welcoming the change of format was Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks, Republic Banks general manager, group marketing and communication.

Today we are proud, through our collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and All Sports Promotions, the first Republic Cup National Youth Football League which is part of the TTFAs development programme for the sport, and which will run from August 3 to September 1, stated Garcia-Brooks, a self-confessed soccer mom.

I would like to acknowledge the TTFA for going back to basics and placing greater emphasis on the development aspect of this great sport; for paying greater attention to the younger age-group footballers, ensuring  that they are provided with opportunities which are similar or better than those provided for the older teenagers and indeed adults players.

Pretty much every young man who has gone on to represent our national team went through the Republic Cup, boasted Harford, who remembers current Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones                   representing Point Fortin Civic Centre in his early days.

Harford added that up to seven members of the 2006 Trinidad and Tobago World Cup team had participated in the Republic Cup at some point.

What we will have over the next couple of weeks is 15 days of sustained  football ending on September 1, Harford said.

I remember when i played in the U17 finals back in 1999 vs St. Francois Nationals. I played with Ste. Madeline Strikers then. It had some good players in that division back then. Joe Public, St. Francois, Scarborough, just to name a few, was some good teams back then at youth level.

Jabloteh, Trendsetter Hawks top Republic Youth League standings.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Nicholas Romany and Tyrese Bailey were among a group of Jabloteh players, who guided their team to a nearly flawless start to their challenge of the Republic Bank National Youth League, on Saturday.

The weekend brought a start to the full 11-a-side football league in the divisions of Under-12 and U-14 in the North and East Zones. Jabloteh played a total of eight matches on the day and won every one.

Romany and Bailey finished the day with six and four goals, respectively, while Kesean St Rose also got four in as many matches. Jabloteh, traditionally a powerhouse in the East Zone won its four matches by a combined score of 24-1.

The club was similarly dominant in the U-12 division, where it secured four wins from four matches, largely due to the efforts of Jaeden Miller, who scored three goals in four matches, as well as Elijah Quow, Josiah Edwards and Jeremiah Viarruel, all of whom scored two goals each.

In the North Zone, Trendetter Hawks also topped the standings in both the U-14 and U-16 divisions. The U-12 team won its opening two matches with Real Gill on target three times, while their older clubmates secured two wins and one draw. Action will is expected to commence in the U-10 division of the North and East Zones this weekend, while the North Zones U-12 and U-14 divisions will conclude their group fixtures.

The top eight teams from the zonal play-offs will enter the national quarterfinals. The national finals will be played on August 23.

Impressive the kind of updates we are getting on Republic Bank National Youth Football League.

And you have to wait days to get updates on the National Super League and the T&T Professional League.

Good job by the organizers.

I guess Tony Hartford will be missed?

Santa Cruz keepers move into knockout stage
T&T Guardian Reports

Santa Cruz Gatekeepers topped Group B of the Under-14 division to move into the national quarterfinal of the Republic Bank National Youth League, following three wins and a loss in North Zone action this weekend at Casual Corner, Queens Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

Santa Cruz now joins Trendsetter Hawks, which topped Group A last weekend. A third team may advance from the North or East Zone but that will be determined following the completion of all matches in all zones. The group topper opened the day with a 2-0 win over last placed finisher, Step by Step. Jaheim Lewis scored one goal in that fixture before he scored another in his clubs second-leg 2-0 win over Step by Step which played a couple hours later.

Meanwhile, in the Under-10 division, SKHY edged Trendsetter Hawks in the final standings to move into the last-eight stage. And, in the Under-12 division, the Hawks were almost flawless in group stage action sealing four wins in as many matches to move into the knockout round.

Two wins were recorded a week prior, before the club continued its strong run on Saturday with a 1-0 and 8-0 wins over Rangers and Laventille United, respectively. Real Gil, Kaihim Thomas and Jaheim Frederick all scored two goals on the day.

Action will turn to the South and Central Zones in all three zones this weekend. The South Zone was postponed last weekend because of the oil spill. Venues will be finalized by tomorrow. The knockout round will start on August 16.

Forgive me if this thread is only for posting results of the Republic Bank youth cup. However, seeing all these youth team names made me wonder if we have a list of all the youth clubs/training schools there are in the country?

It seems like we have hundreds scattered around the country

Three National Youth League finals tomorrow
T&T Guardian

Following easy victories in last weekends first knockout round East Zone standout Jabloteh FC will challenge two semifinals, one in the Under-12 division and in the U-14 division of the Republic Bank National Youth League, when the competition comes to a close at Casual Corner, Queens Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, tomorrow from 9.30 am.

The semifinals all three divisions including the U-10 division will kick off at the same time. Last weekend, Jabloteh which eased past the round-robin phase in the East Zone, won both of its matches comfortably. In the U-12 division, Josiah Edwards and Jude Johnson scored on either side of the half to lead the club to a 2-0 win over South-based Central Zone winner Marabella Family CC. Then, in the U-14 division, Jabloteh spared no mercy to trounce Santa Cruz Gatekeepers 8-0. Jodel Brown and Kishawn St Rose each scored a double with the remaining coming from Mickel Orr, Tyrese Bailey, Tigana OBrien and Lukeman Brooks. Fortunately for Marabella Family CC, the club also booked a spot in the U-14 semifinals with a 3-1 win over Trendsetter Hawks. Jaden Joseph scored a quick-fire double in that fixture.

Jabloteh and Marabella Family CC will meet in the first U-14 semifinal from 9.30 am.

The finals in the U-10 and U-12 divisions will kick off at 12.30 pm, before the U-14 final, which starts at 1 pm.

No treble for Jabloteh as Uprising and SKHY share national youth honors
By Roneil Walcott (Wired868.com)

San Juan Jabloteh started the final day of the 2015 Republic Bank National Youth Cup contending in all three age groups but, in the end, managed to come away with just the one title yesterday at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar.
The San Juan Kings edged WASA FC 2-1 in the Under-15 final to round off the days action in perfect fashion following their earlier disappointments.
Uprising Youths outkicked Jabloteh from the penalty spot in the Under-11 final while, in the the Under-13 division, Jabloteh settled for a third place finish, after being turned back by St Anns Rangers in the semi-finals.
The seemingly indestructible SKHY FC romped to victory in the Under-13 category with some aplomb, conceding no goals on the day while scoring six.
The final day of the Republic Bank National Youth Cup was ushered in with a brief but heavy downpour as the Under-11 and Under-13 semi-finalists took to the field at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar. The games were played simultaneously in the two halves of the field while all the Under-15 games, save for the final, were played on the stadiums training ground.
Prior to the days proceedings, all Under-13 defenders should have been warned about free-scoring SKHY forward Justin Araujo-Wilson. Even if they had not heard of him, Araujo-Wilsons giant frame speaks for itself.
The towering youngster, who might draw some comparisons with Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, opened the scoring on the day in the seventh minute of his match as he headed home from close range off a corner.
So much for that warning huh?
In truth, the La Brea-based WEZ Pro team had very little answer for Araujo-Wilson and the Under-13 MVP manoeuvred in and around the box at will. SKHYs defence was rarely troubled and its attackers looked as though they could run up a tennis score.
In the end, they fell just short of a massacre but still managed a handy 4-nil rout. Araujo-Wilson fittingly helped himself to the fourth and final item.
The atmosphere at the Larry Gomes Stadium was not as intense or as hostile as the Queens Park Savannah or Constantine Park venues where spectators marshalled the touchlines. But the passion was still undoubtedly there, as parents and coaches remained as belligerent as ever on the touchlines and the players on the substitutes benches were not far behind.
SKHYs semifinal affair was a breeze but the pair of Under-11 semis produced tenser affairs.
Cap Off Youths and treble-chasing Jabloteh played to an interesting goalless match. Interesting because Jabloteh somehow managed to come out of the match without conceding a goal.
Cap Off played all over and around their San Juan opponents but failed to get that crucial goal. And the Central Zone teams fate was sealed from the penalty spot as they were edged by Jabloteh.
We play all the football, said a Cap Off coach, as he slammed his water bottle into the ground, were not supposed to be going through this. Jah boy!
Trendsetter Hawks coach Anthony Dada Wickham was busy preparing his team at the time and warned them about suffering a similar end.

Those of us who bemoan the days of old for youth football, probably missed a chance to experience the passion of yesteryear. Those pix reminded me of u-14, u-16 football in QPS, Aranguez, St. Joseph and at Eddie Hart. Nice to see the adults there too. But I saw a couple pix of the Savannah. Why is the grass so friggin high. Look at the pix forum, it up to the kids knees. The right honorable. mr Mayor, TTFA president, please cut the savannah grass. This is football season. Well it maybe cut now because today is Independence Day. Happy Independence forum.

Wasn't that the point of Independence? To be able to cut our own grass on an effective timetable? Without someone telling us to cut it, when to cut it, and how? Possibly, we're privileged to even HAVE grass.

QPCC, Santa Cruz, Central and Trendsetter shine as RBNYL kicks off with POS goal rush.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The QPCC Under-11 football team got the 2017 Republic Bank National Youth League (RBNYL) off to a memorable start yesterday morning with an emphatic 5-1 win over a Trendsetter Hawks outfit, as the North Zone kicked off the proceedings at the Queens Park Savannah in Port of Spain.

And by mid-afternoon, there were more than a few miserable young goalkeepers in Port of Spain as the goals never stopped flowing.

Trendsetter Hawks managed to be on the right end of the most lopsided result of the day, though. Attacker Malachi Celestine led the way with a beaver-trick as the Hawks routed Belmont Secondary 11-0 in the only under-15 match played this weekend.

Funny enough, Hawks under-15 coach Theophilus Boyce was the busier of the two coaches.

Django, when [the central defender] gets the ball, you have to come here for it, Boyce instructed his young right back. You here me right? Aaron, put your back [in line with] the post

Ahmm. What is the number 10s name again?

If this is how the Hawks look when they are just getting acquainted with each other, God alone knows what their opponents will have to deal with when Boyce and his boys start singing from the same hymn sheet.

QPCC coach Anthony Selby appeared to know his players so well that they might all live under the same roof.

We have been training since January, said Selby, an Englishman who married local girl, Ella Carter, and moved to Trinidad eight years ago. We are using this as a stepping stone before we go to Disney [Cup International tournament] in July We have been playing friendly games pretty much week after week.

QPCC and Hawks had so many under-11 players that they split into two teams. But it was soon evident that the Hawks second team was no match for the Parkites first squad.

Midfield anchor Logan Maingot scored an eye raising drive from distance while nine year old winger Cayden Trestrail notched a double and showed good individual ability down the right flank. But it was really the efficient ball rotation from the boys in sky blue jerseys that had onlookers nodding their heads in approval.

Of course Hawks might point to the size difference on top where QPCC defender Jaden Williams looked like he could fit opposing striker Jadon McShine in his pocket and still have room for his iPhone.

McShine did get a consolation goal for the Hawks, which was the least he deserved for a tireless performanceoften aloneagainst a three-man defence that was twice his size.

The Hawks 1 team gave a better account for themselves in the Under-11 division although they were hardly cruising, as they fought back from a goal down to edge Eastern United SC 2-1 in a ding-dong battle on the parched ground.

Josante Duncan opened the scoring for Eastern only for Michael Oliviere and Hasheem Hill to overturn the deficit with vital second half items for the Hawks.

The QPCC 2 squad could not build on their colleagues opening win though. Santa Cruz United FA made sure of that as Jadiel Joseph, Tyler Edwards, Tristan Dwarika and Jamaludin Blandin brought the Parkites back down to earth with a 4-1 spanking.

And Central FC shared the goals around evenly as Lyndell George, Jahaeim Bailey, Omari Clarke, Malique Charles, Jedaiah King and Teshaun Franklyn all contributed a goal apiece in a 6-1 rout of Harvard.

At this rate, goalkeepers might be nervous to turn up next week.

Pinto United, D/Force blow away opponents as RBNYL makes windy Macoya entrance
By Sean Taylor (Wired868).

The goals continued to flow on the second weekend of the 2017 Republic Bank National Youth League (RBNYL) at Constantine Park in Tunapuna. The young footballers in the East lit up the Macoya ground, Pinto United SC providing most of the early entertainment.

Like last weekend at the Queens Park Savannah, it was another day of scorching weather but a constantand welcome!breeze from the east kept the temperature tolerable enough to allow the youngsters to produce some audacious goals, especially in the Under-11 division.

The morning contest between San Juan Jabloteh and Febeau Government Primary School was a case in point. In the close encounter, Jahmarley Castellano bent his left-footer enough to score from a right side free kick while Janesaua Ferguson, Messi to his peers, scored directly from a corner. The wind was a factor in both goals but that made them more rather less spectacular.

Although Fergusons corner was worthy of the highlight reel at La Masia, it only served to halve the deficit, Jabloteh having raced into an early 2-0 lead. Raheem Mohan had finished from close range in the sixth minute, after which Castellanos free kick doubled his teams lead.

The real hero of the encounter, though was Stephon Langaigne, Febeaus keeper who made a string of impressive saves frustrating Castellano in particular no end in the second half. Jabloteh held firm however and snatched the 2-1 win.

There was as much action on the side-lines as on the pitch, sometimes more. Parents and other supporters were often just as involved, sometimes more, than the team coaches. Keen as the competition was, the spirit remained good-natured and healthy throughout,

More than once or twice, assistant referees found themselves forced to remonstrate with encroaching supporters.

Hard luck there, linesman, was a frequently heard apology.

Apart from their effect on the temperature, the windy conditions enhanced the picong that came from the sidelines and from the bench. When, for example, Pinto Uniteds Deisean Plaza attempted a long-range, right-side free kick and hooked the shot hopelessly wide, one parentmaybe Plazashad a ready explanation.

Coach, she offered, is de breeze! It provoked a loud chorus of approval and laughter.

Of course, the players and supporters of Plazas side could afford to laugh. At that point, he had already bagged a first-half hat-trick, Pinto United eventually running out 5-2 winners over Adrenaline in the thriller.

Plaza started the goal-fest as early as the fourth minute and found the back of the net a second time in the sixth minute. He completed his treble in the 21st minute before Jeremiah Charles added a fourth just before the half.

The Adrenaline coach may have given his players a stern talking to at the half and they emerged in the second half looking as if they really wanted to get back into the match. After only eight minutes, Kendall Castle bent his right-footed free kick over the wall to cut the deficit to three. It remained that way for just three minutes when Pintos Kyle Moreno produced a firm right-footer to beat the keeper.

Castle scored another free kick seconds before the whistle. Forward Lu Ann Craig was felledfor the umpteenth timeby take-no-prisoners defender Jeylon Etienne.

Find out if dat girl does beat him up in school! someone on the bench joked.

Castle stepped up and lifted his dead ball over the wall. It seemed to be straight at the goalie but it ended up nestling in the bottom of the net. Too little, too late for the gritty Adrenaline.

In the curtain-closer of the Under-11 division, Defence Forcewho were represented by SKHY FCdowned Malabar Young Stars 2-0 thanks to a brace from Tau Lamsee, who caught the eye with an assured performance at the front of the attack. The forward nudged a header past the keeper 10 minutes in and then scored three minutes after the break with a confident finish after he collected a pass from midfield.

After both items, the precocious forward went wheeling away to celebrate in front of cheering parents and supporters his index finger glued to his lips. Maybe well see him on a stage on of these days.

The SKHY/Defence Force outfit dominated their Malabar counterparts throughout but, breeze notwithstanding, Constantine Park was more of an oven in the early afternoon. It showed in the growing number of obviously tired legs near the end.

There were goals in the other divisions as well. Trincity Nationals announced themselves in the U-13 division with a 5-0 drubbing of Adrenaline FA, thanks to a hat-trick from Jovon Gomes. In the following match, Malabar Young Stars bettered Trincitys performance with a 6-0 rout over Maracas United, with Joshua Ashing adding a hat-trick of his own.

Among the Under 15s, Defence Force cruised to a comfortable win over Tunapuna Titans, with goals from Brandon Shallow, Justyn Seabrun and Justyn McIntosh.

Champs QPCC start with win.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Defending champions Queens Park Cricket Club and FC Santa Rosa sounded warnings to rivals with emphatic wins at Sundays Republic bank National youth League opening at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Arima.

After David Robinson, Manager Wealth Services met the players, the Under-12 clash between QPCC and a South Zone Under-12 proved entertaining.

The well organized and talented QPCC boys, dealt the first blow when Logan Maingot put them in the lead in the 22nd minute which they carried into the half.

On resumption after a chat with coach Anthony Selby, the Parkites stepped up the pace and South was left gasping on all fronts, as Stephen Griffith added the second in the 32nd and Caden Trestrail in the third in the 45th to put the issue beyond all doubt.

In the second match of the double header, FC Santa Rosa edged North Zone Under-16s by 1-0 with Jashawn Thomas scoring in the 45th minute.

This was a far more even game, with the Northerners having a few chances to equalise but the ball eluding the net on each occasion.

The 2018 Republic National League competition season starts on Saturday at the Queens Park Savannah at 10 am for clubs in the north.

Harford: RBNYL now bigger than YPL; QPCC and Rosa throw down gauntlet for 2018 season.
By Roneil Walcott (Wired868).

Queens Park Cricket Club (QPCC) and FC Santa Rosa threw down the gauntlet for the 2018 Republic Bank National Youth League (RBNYL) season at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar yesterday. The two clubs notched victories over a Southern Football Association (SFA) XI (Under-12s) and a Northern Football Association (NFA) XI (Under-16s) respectively.

Last year, QPCC, Central FC and Rosa were the RBNYL champions in the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 divisions respectively and organisers deemed it fitting for the winners to get the ball rolling in this the 23rd consecutive season of the youth tournament.

In the days opener, QPCC, captained by Logan Maingot and coached by Anthony Selby, treated themselves to a handsome 3-0 win against the SFA XI. Santa Rosa got a second half item from star striker Jashawn Thomas to turn back a wasteful NFA XI in the afternoons second match. However, the encounter ended on a sour note for Santa Rosa as their industrious winger, Renaldo Padarath, suffered a fractured wrist in the dying moments of the game when he tried to effect a slide tackle in his penalty area.

Youth Pro League (YPL) commitments prevented Central, who clinched a stunning 4-3 comeback victory against Rosa in the Under-13 division last year, from taking part in todays proceedings. And its part of a wider issue which the RBNYL hopes to remedy once and for all this season.

Simultaneous scheduling has led to conflict between the RBNYL and Trendsetter Hawks Under-15 unit forfeited a quarterfinal game to Santa Rosa at the stage after it was discovered that two of their players were still registered with San Juan Jablotehs YPL outfit while the RBNYL was in full swing.

The successful protest by the Big Cannons put an end to Hawks unbeaten season in the Under-15 category last season. This season, however, All Sport Promotions director Anthony Harford promised, there will be no such occurrences.

For a long time we felt as though we were the little brother to the Pro League but we dont feel that we need to be the little brother anymore as we have the bigger tournament, Harford told Wired868. We have over 90 teams and they are independently registered so no player in the Republic Youth Cup can play in both [tournaments].

Last year it was an issue with several clubs and Trendsetter Hawks lost a game because of that. That has been eliminated

The Hawks duo, Antonio Chee Ting and Josiah Edwards, both National Youth Team players, did not actually represent Jabloteh in last years YPL once the RBNYL season was under way. However, the transfer forms certifying their move from Jabloteh to Hawks never reached the Pro League offices, which meant that the two youngsters were still officially registered with the San Juan Kings while strutting their stuff with the Anthony Dada Wickham-coached Hawks team.

Harford assured Wired868 that there will be no problem either with clubs like Central and Jabloteh who usually turn out teams in both youth tournaments.

They have registered teams for both tournaments but they are using separate players, he explained, noting that registration had closed off on Friday. Some of these academies have many, many players so they can play in both competitions [with different squads].

Centrals victorious team from last season, Harford noted, has now been split up between the clubs YPL Under-14 and Under-16 outfits.

Harford also reckons that the RBNYL is a good platform for youngsters to get exposure and develop their talents. And he pointed to a number of players who have gone on to represent the country at the national youth level.

One player likely to do that is Abdul-Quddoos Hypolite. The talented youngster, who first caught Wired868s attention as a tricky, energetic customer with Trendsetter Hawks a few years ago, walked away with MVP honours last season after rallying the Sharks to a come-from-behind victory against Santa Rosa.

It is not yet clear whether Quddoos-Hypolite will grace the RBNYL stage this year or whether he will be playing elsewhere. Harford is convinced that the RBNYL is the place to be because it is all about getting the players ready for the next step in their careers by complying with every single international regulation requirement.

All of our rules and regulations are covered by FIFA rules like field sizes, duration of games, substitutes, Harford explained. We are doing everything so that these young men can walk straight from one of these clubs into a zonal team and be ready for zonal football.

Coaches know exactly what to expect. We are not being dependent on players coming from anywhere other than the communities from which they come.

The NFA XI, overseen by Marlon Phillip and Jason Sheppard, eventually succumbed to a close-range Thomas strike in the 51st minute of an 80-minute match. And although Harford would have been heartened by the display of Kaihim Thomas, whose mazy runs were problematic for defenders all game long, he would have been less pleased with the teams finishing. After all, the Northern youngsters are due to go off to Canada on a 13-day tour in August.

In preparation for the at least five games they play on that tour, despite returning to their respective clubs after yesterday, the NFA players will contest exhibition games at least once a month between now and August.

Harford, whos also the North Zone president, explained that the City of Port-of-Spain and the City of St Catherines in Canada are twinned and this year is the 50th anniversary of the twining.

So, through the Twinning Association of Canada, he said, an invitation was extended for a sports group to come and the note was sent to me.

So they put together the same group of Under-15 boys who had played unbeaten to win last seasons Interzone title and the fund-raising efforts began immediately.

But the Canada tour should not have been on the minds of the NFA players as they tried to get bragging rights over their Santa Rosa counterparts. Santa Rosas emphasis, club founder Keith Look Loy stresses, is solidity in defence and Rosa player Hayden Sealey stuck to NFAs Mamade Guerra like white on rice for most of the contest. But the NFA team did not capitalise on the chances they were allowed, with Guerra too among the guilty.

He stabbed wide of the mark from a tight angle in the 24th minute and then shot straight at the Rosa custodian in the 33rd minute after being played through on goal. Thomas (K), who had brought his dancing shoes to the Stadium, shot tamely at the goalkeeper in two one-on-one sequences in either half of play.

Santa Rosas lanky Thomaswho received heaps of praise from his Under-13 coach Justin De Freitas during last seasons RBNYLbeat his chest in jubilation, storming off to celebrate in front of the Rosa fans after his winner.

The enthusiastic Padarath too impressed, displaying electric pace down the right flank and putting in a workmanlike shift on both sides of the ball as well. However, he left the arena with a fractured wrist and his arm in a sling after making a valiant sliding tackle to try and stop a marauding NFA run.

His arm, he was told, must remain in a cast for two months.

If Padarath was the outstanding player in the Under-16 encounter, the QPCC vs SFA match-up produced no single outstanding player. QPCC were always in control and showed their prowess from set pieces, skipper Maingot opening the scoring with a towering first half header while Stephen Griffith and Caden Trestrail, two of the three coming from right-side corner kicks. Just before the end, Kade Collier also had a free kick item whistled off.

SFAs Ari John and Jeremiah Niles also showed good individual ability, the latter forcing QPCC keeper Michael-Peter Hadad into two fine saves in the 50th  minute.

Following their dramatic penalty shootout win over Jabloteh in the Under-11 division last year, the QPCC lads went on to the Disney Cup where they faced some stiff overseas competition. Selby said hes looking forward to see them apply all they have learnt over the past 12 months.

[The Disney Cup] was an excellent experience, Selby told Wired868, [the boys] got to play teams from three different countries on great facilities. Every day they were there they got some training and there was an indoor facility as well.

In Trinidad, they are used to winning most of the games, he went on, but over there we had a couple of losses as well so it was a good experience in terms of that.

Selby would love to see his charges continue that kind of display and build on the solid foundation they set last season.

We want to do well in all the age-groups and we want to do better than we did last year, Selby said. Weve got two teams going into [the Under-12 competition] so weve strengthened up a little bit. Some of the boys who didnt get a lot of game time last year will get some playing time in this particular season.

We will probably look at bringing a bit more of the tactical side for them but again its about developing them and getting some good game time under their belts.

Competitive action in the 2018 RBNYL season will get under way from 24 March, the North Zone getting the show on the road. The action breaks again, however, during the Easter holiday weekend.

Maracas United get 1st Republic League victory.
T&T Newsday Reports.

Maracas United FC got their first win in the Under 12 division of the Republic Cup Football League on Saturday as action continued at Constantine Park, Macoya.

Maracas United defeated Adrenaline FA 4-3 in a nail-biting affair that saw the game turn on its head after half-time.

Maracas United were in full control at 3-0 at the half with goals from Jafari Gomez, Skipper Kjeldsen Sydney and Kalel De Four.

But after the break, Adrenaline FA came roaring back with three unanswered goals of their own to stun their rivals.

However, with less than three minutes left in the game, Sydney scored his second and the game winner to give Maracas United the win and all three points.

Maracas United Director of football and head coach, Corey Selvon, said he was extremely encouraged and excited not only by the win but also by the improvements his young charges have made.

Selvon said the club was founded in direct response to the upsurge of crime in Maracas Valley and environs and that their academy is geared towards the advancement of young persons through sports.

Selvon believes that there is enough footballing talent in Maracas Valley to field representative teams in all TTFA-sanctioned leagues including the Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL), the TT Pro League and Womens League Football (WoLF).

Selvon said this is one of the major long-term goals of the club.

The goalkeeper: Uprising Youths Jadyn White shines on the field
By Stacy Moore (Trinidad and Tobago Newsday)

TWELVE-year-old Jadyn Whyte is a rising star in youth football.

He has already mastered ball control and his shot-stopping ability as a goalkeeper has been described by his coach as phenomenal. His dream is to play for the national football team.

Jadyns first goal is to pass for Presentation College, San Fernando when he writes the SEA exam on May 3. He has already set a high standard for himself as a standard five student of Point Fortin Anglican Primary School.

He has been competitive in class, as on the field, attaining a trophy for outstanding academic performance in 2016, and representing the school in the national word championships and mental mathematics competitions.

As the goalkeeper for Uprising Youth Football Academy, he tasted victory in 2015 when the team from Guapo, where he lives, won the Republic Bank Youth Football tournament. Two years later they placed second in the competition.

I know have a responsibility to my team. I know they are depending on me so I always do my best, Jadyn told Newsday Kids.

He has liked football since he was four.

I remember standing in my yard and watching a group of men playing football. I was amazed how they moved the ball with their feet. When I got my very first football I was so happy all I wanted to do was kick the ball. I would go with my ball in the yard and practice kicking the ball. I practised for hours some days.

When Jadyn was eight, his mother, Timesha Whyte, enrolled him in the academy. He impressed the coaches which his ability to block and kick. He studies the game and watches replays of international matches. He is always glued to the screen and anxiously watches how the footballers plan each move on the field. Football is his world, said his proud mother.

Jadyn balances academics and sport on a strict schedule: training on Saturdays and weekdays on evenings, schoolwork also on weekends and after training in the week.

His coach Sheldon Mitchell praised Jadyns discipline and humility.

He is extremely talented. He is also a great team player who has brought home many victories to us, said Mitchell. Jadyn has so much potential and he has far to go. I am proud to have him under my wings.

Jadyn hopes to be like German footballer Marc-Andr ter Stegen, the goalkeeper for Spanish club Barcelona and the German national team.

I try to watch what he does on the field, how he moves the ball and when Im playing football I apply some of those same moves in training and matches, Jadyn said.

He is grateful for his teachers, coach and familys support.

My mom is one of my biggest mentors she is always there pushing me to be my best on the field and in school. At games I could hear her cheering me on in the crowd, he said.

Jadyn already plans to play football at secondary school, hopefully with Presentation, and then for the country.

I want to be a professional goalkeeper.

Nb: nothing below is factual, only personal and mostly uniformed observations. Draw from it what you will, however, I could be mistaken.

Watched a couple games in Savannah, U 16, QPCC vs some youths from Laventille, did not like the fact, that a few ppl i asked could not tell me the name of the Laventille team. However, the stronger team was definitely QPCC, i think the score was definitely over 8-0. J Romany who came on as a substitute in the 2 nd half is a real goal scorer, he had at least 4. Good vision, good teamwork along withthr rest of the tram, and technically and physically strong. The defense and midfield was quite solid and was a good reflection on a proper youth coaching system. The laventille team was unfortunately very disinterested as individuals and therefore as a team. From what i overheard from the coach post game, they were missing a few players and most of those who were there arrived only a few minutes befote game time. He spoke to them about the importance of arriving early, without berating the boys, which i found very commendable. He added, that it is only 1 loss, wheter it be 1 or 8, 3 points. However if they are to win future games, they have to be more dedicated and ambitious.

Notes : the Laventille youths were more heckling each other about who get embarassed by the white boys , than what actually transpired before, during and after the actual game.

Besides the coach, the youths had a player 2 friends and anothers sister, while every QPCC parent a few uncles, auntsaunts were there to support them.

After the game, the coach seemed to have the QPCC players hangout a bit, and a couple watched the beginning of the following game. All of the Laventille players left immediately, only the coach stayed.

The teams of the following games lightly warmed up an hour before the start of their game. Then for 1/2 hour before their game sat around, liming, not really watching the ongoing game. Then sat closer to the field for 15 minutes waiting for their game to start.

As the Laventille youths were exiting the field,a few POS youths commented to them allyuh let the white boys do allyuh that.

QPCC had more black boys than white boys.  A parent told me , most of them have been playing together for club and school( Fatima) for a few years.

The QPCC coach seemed the most discipled and no nonsense than all other coaches, i observed. He seemed to have an accent, giving me the impression that he trained/coached/lived in foreign. Young black guy, yet i couldnt determine where from.

Solid 11 year olds game was on display. Again QPCC and maybe Jab. In that game, teams were relatvely even. QPCC had 2 coaches, other team had 3 on bench and at least 9 around sidelines.

Also please excuse typos, difficulty typing so much on my phone. Lucky i didnt lose whole post.

The laventille team was Laventille United. Coach is Cedric Hazelwood
Veteran coach in the north zone and continues to do yeoman's service in that community with little resources
and minimal personnel

Games are every saturday. in 3 age groups---U12, U14, U16...All starting from 9:30 am every morning in the QP Savannah
Also going on in the East (Constantine Park); South (manny ramjohn / La brea); Central and Tobago

Nice vibes and some impressive football especially from the top teams tbh

The U12 game you refered to was QPCC Black vs Santa Cruz Utd.
Was full of action!

No disrespect to the work Cedric is doing there, but Laventille not in the same weight class as QPCC in terms of the football on the field.
2 totally diff. levels.
Cedric doing serious work in that community tho. Props to him

I know that. Nevertheless, aside from the "renovation" in the football architecture (physical and mental) at QPCC over the recent years, the "football on the field" can also be distinguished by the investment climate available to both clubs. Surely for example, that Laventille club is getting none of the foreign exposure that QPCC is getting, ent?

Febeau hit to SKHY, Devin Seales deal for Malabar, Gios bitter taste of Ginga; Trincity stay unbeaten
By Roneil Walcott (Wired868).

The SKHY FC Under-11 team and FC Ginga Under-15 side were among the big winners as action in the East Zone of the Republic Bank Youth League (RBYL) continued at Constantine Park, Macoya on Saturday 13 April.

Meanwhile, Trincity Nationals remained perfect in both the Under-13 and Under-15 divisions, although their day was sullied somewhat due to a broken hand suffered by Hirshil Parks in their tense 2-1 victory over Crown Traces Under-13 outfit.

Trincity snatched the winner against Crown Trace in the 53rd minute of the hour-long affair, as attacker Zion Chariandy tucked away from close range after goalkeeper Jordan Neaves failed to convincingly deal with a right side free kick from Keshon Charles.

Charles ears were ringing all game as coach Shanelle Warrick constant stream of bellowed instructions seemed to centre around Charlo. The tidy midfielder had a hand in Trincitys first goal too, as his 17th minute corner was perfectly met by Tyrese Ironside to put them ahead.

However, after the game, focus quickly shifted to the injured Parks.

Hirshil got a tackle and I believe he landed badly, and he fell and broke the hand, Warrick told Wired868. When Hirshil got injured I saw that a few of my players were shaken up. But I had to tell them reboot and lets go again. And I think they got the victory for him.

Charlo, Chariandy and their teammates certainly answered Warricks call, and their next task is to pray for the speedy recovery of their soldier Parks. On the playing field, Warrick hopes they can emulate their 2018 Under-14 team which won the National title.

The overall goal is to win out the RBYL in the Under-13 and Under-15 divisions, said Warrick. We are the last year champs in the [Under-14s] so we are hoping the Under-13s can join them this year.

The Under-13s have a goal to accomplish and for the Under-15s its even harder because they are the defending champs and everyone will come to beat them.

Trincitys Under-13 game was tense in every sense of the word. However, their Under-15 contestif it could be called thatwith Diem Sporting Academy was as lopsided as they come. Both Jkwan De Bique and Christian Walker helped themselves to a couple of goals as they hammered Diem 8-0.

Trincity Nationals have now scored ten unanswered goals in this years Under-15 division.

Diem fared far better in the Under-11 division though, as they showed grit and determination in an exciting 1-1 draw with Extreme LH. It was Diems first point of 2019 and they got it in some style, as Kenroy Burgin arrowed a wicked, low free kick into the far corner in the final minute of the encounterafter seven year-old attacker Eli-Akim Nelson was bundled over outside the area.

Just seconds before, the Extreme LH players and fans were jubilant as Oneil Dyers left-footed strike looked likely to give them their third straight win. However, Burgin had other ideas, and his superb set piece sent parents scampering along the sidelines in wild celebrations.

Diem coach Bernard Garcia did not join in the frantic celebrations, but he could not hide the elation from his face.

Yes it was a nail-biter. We lost the first two games and this is the first result we got, Garcia told Wired868, as he smiled from ear to ear.

On 6 April, Diem suffered a heavy 10-nil defeat at the feet of SKHY, who racked up their third straight victory on the weekend with a 6-nil drubbing of Febeau Government Primary School.

All and sundry are looking up to SKHY in the Under-11 Division at the moment, as the boys in yellow have racked up 20 goals without any response.

Diem have altogether different aspirations at present and, despite being short one player against Extreme LH on Saturday, they dug deep to get their first result.

The effort was really good. The guys really stuck together, Garcia said. It was about keeping them together and getting them to play for another and thats what they did today.

And what about the tiny Nelson? He could almost fit into one of the defenders back pocket. Garcia told Wired868 that size doesnt matter.

These are more like our Under-8s, 9s and 10s who are playing in this Under-11 tournament, Garcia said. Nelson is 7 years-old. We give all the players exposure. Once we realise that they can handle the physicality of the game, size and age isnt going to be an issue.

Another GarciaGiovannicertainly showed that size wasnt an issue in the Under-11 Division, as the diminutive Matura number ten bagged a hat-trick in their thrilling 3-3 tie with Ginga.

Gio, as he was called by his dad and teammates, started the game with a bang, scoring twice inside the first five minutes.

However, Ginga, who are unbeaten after three games in the division showed their mettle as goals by Zwade Alleyne, Mecki Clarke and Ky-mani Hazel brought them level at three apiece by the 40th minute.

Still, a determined Gio almost had the last say for Matura with a dangerous set piece in the penultimate minute of the 50-minute encounter. Hacked to the ground by a couple Ginga defenders, well outside the area, Gio dusted himself off, grabbed the ball and took about ten paces backwards as he lined up the free kick.

The run up resembled the prelude of an Alzarri Joseph or Oshane Thomas delivery, and Gios focus was intense. The Matura player strode to the ball and spanked an audacious left-footer off the woodwork; and his teammate Valiant Lewis failed to live up to his name, as he somehow put the rebound over bar from close range.

Gio left the field in tears, as the result, coupled with the alleged rude words of an opponent, left him visibly distraught.

In other Under-11 results, Malabar Young Stars edged out Crown Trace 3-2 thanks to a second half double by Renaldo Noreiga, while Maracas United defeated the San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 courtesy a strike on the half hour mark by Zade Castillo.

Jabloteh, perennial powerhouses at youth level, are having a tough time thus far this year, with their defeat to Maracas coming on the heels of a 3-1 defeat to Extreme LH on 6 April.

While Jabloteh are already a household name across the countryarguably even across the regionGinga are trying to establish their own reputation and leave a good taste in spectators mouths at the same time.

The RBYL newcomers suffered a 4-1 defeat against Matura in the Under-13 division and trail table-toppers Trincity and FC Santa Rosawho are both on six points. However, in the Under-15 Division, Ginga are adding much flavour, as they racked up two consecutive wins.

On 6 April, Ginga edged out Rosa, 2017 National Under-15 champions, by a 2-1 margin. And on Saturday, they showed that victory was no fluke as they trounced Coopers Coaching Academy 6-0.

Kyle Waldron was the chief architect of Gingas success with a hat-trick while Ronaldo Rogers and Malique Gould also helped give opposing goalkeeper Randon Baptiste a torrid time between the sticks.

Malabar joined Trincity and Ginga on six points in the Under-15 Division, as they outclassed SKHY in the second half of their encounter to emerge 3-1 victors.

Malabar attacker Devin Seales grabbed a double with goals in the 47th minute and second half stoppage time. Seales first item was particularly pleasing on the eye as he tricked his way past a SKHY defender on the left side of the area before thumping past goalkeeper Michael Bassarath from a tight angle.

SKHYbar their midfielder Darion Marfanlooked void of ideas in the second half. Marfan, sporting an unmistakable afro, was a cut above his teammates, and seemed to glide past opponents in twos and threes.

Marfan grabbed a deserved but bizarre goal too in the 52nd minute, as his free kick from near the half line comically bounced over the Malabar goalie and settled in the back of the net.

Try as he might, Marfan couldnt create further uncertainty with his left foot, as Devins late effort sealed the contest.

Malabar have their work cut out for them in a tight Under-15 group though, as they have played one more game than both Ginga and Trincity, and the Big Cannons of Santa Rosa are certain to come back in fiery mood after the Easter break.

Jaric Titans move into U-13, U-15 finals
By Narissa Fraser (T&T Newsday)

THE Republic Cup National Youth Football League, which began on June 1, continued yesterday with its semi-final matches at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima.

A total of 12 teams faced off in the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories to secure their spots in next weeks finals.

The Under-11 games were 50 minutes each with nine-a-side teams. The first match between SKHY FC and Pro Series began with some excitement as Kai Williams of SKHY FC found the back of the net in the seventh minute. SKHY FC were on their way to victory but a 40th minute equaliser from Jasai Theophilous, who was the MVP of the match, took the teams to penalty kicks where it ended in heartbreak for SKHY as Pro Series won 5-4.

Trendsetter Hawks I cruised past Queens Park Football Academy 2-0 in the second Under-11 semi; both goals scored by Ishan Miller.

Jaric Titans faced Trendsetter Hawks II in an Under-13 semi. The matches in this category were 60 minutes long but the coaches seemed tense as they were pacing and shouting on the sidelines.

The Titans supporters were also at the edge of their seats until Denton Alleyne copped a late goal, leading the Titans to a 1-0 victory. Alleyne said the match was easy for him and that he is looking forward to scoring more goals in the final.

Trendsetter Hawks I defeated the Point Fortin Youth FA 1-0 with a late goal from Mordecai Ford.

Following in the footsteps of their younger counterparts, the Jaric Titans Under-15 squad earned a 2-0 victory over Santa Cruz United, with Orlando Jones finding the back of the net in the 36th and 50th minute.

The day ended the same way it began - with penalties. FC Ginga faced off with Trincity Nationals where it remained goalless at the end of regulation time. Trincity Nationals went on to win 4-2 on penalties.

The finals will be held on July 6 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 10 am.

Republic Youth Cup to provide scholarship opportunities for players
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

REPUBLIC Banks partnership with Gateway Athletics International for the 2022 Republic Youth Cup will provide players with the opportunity to secure scholarships at local, regional and international colleges and universities.

This was announced by Gateway managing director Shem Alexander at the tournaments launch last Friday at Republic Banks head office in Port of Spain.

After a two-year absence owing to covid19, the long-standing youth competition returns in June and will provide avenues of academic and sporting growth for young players.

Registration is open to all schools, football academies and clubs. Interested participants can register by logging on to www.gatewayathletics.com.

Hosts Republic Bank have been involved in this popular tournament, which promotes the advancement of youth football, for over two decades.

At the launch, Alexander, a former Republic Youth Cup participant, expressed enthusiasm for the competitions return and was eager to see T&Ts up-and-coming talent on show.

We have come on board to act as the conduit to ensure the student-athletes with the local schools, football academies and clubs are given the opportunity to chart their football career through football scholarships to colleges and universities, locally, regionally and internationally.

The vision was birthed as a result of a need to assist and provide a bridge of opportunity to local and regional student-athletes.

Through strong established relationships with various universities, colleges and clubs throughout the US and UK, Gateway stands proud on its record of having fostered over 100 scholarships for both male and female student-athletes, he said.

This years Republic Youth Cup features male and female Under-14, Under-16 and 17-19 divisions.

Additionally, organisers revised the previous format and reverted to the original format which is seven versus seven.

Alexander added, We expect to grasp the spirit of the community as we host a weekend of play for each of the various zones throughout TT. This provides good opportunities for participants through the All-Star weekend while engaging US-based colleges and institutions.

Also present at the launch were Republic Banks senior manager group marketing and communications Kwame Blanchfield, Gateway Athletics director of operations Adrian Romain, YMCA CEO T&T Odetta Alexander, director of SporTT Hayden Mitchell, chairman of Tunapuna Regional Corporation Kwesi Robinson and tournament ambassador/international footballer Robert Primus.

Republic Cup makes return...71 clubs set to compete in National Youth Football League
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

YOUTH FOOTBALL development is key to returning football in Trinidad and Tobago to a high standard.

So stated Anton Corneal, technical director of T&T football, yesterday, when delivering the feature address at the launch of the Republic Cup National Youth Football League.

With the T&T Premier League set to restart local professional football, from next Friday, Corneal felt that Saturdays start of the National Youth Football League was also key to the development of young footballers.

The 2023 Republic Cup National Youth Football League runs from March 4-May 27 and is being organised by Gateway Athletics, sponsored by Republic Bank and endorsed by the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association (TTFA).

Shem Alexander of Gateway Athletics, detailed the structure of the tournament as having six divisions; Boys Under-13, -15, -17 & -20, along with Girls Under-16 & -20. Seventy-one clubs have registered to compete nationwide. Preliminary competition will be contested on a zonal basis, after which the top two teams from each zone will contest national playoffs.

Corneal lauded the full resumption of the Republic Cup, which had a shortened version in 2022, following a two-year absence due to the Covid- 19 pandemic.

We have been advised that if one programme must exist it must be football. There must be a league in your country. It has been advised by Arsne Wenge (FIFAs Chief of Global Football Development) who has actually spoken to all the MAs, (FIFA Member Associations) asking, could you get football playing in your country. From the grassroots level to the elite level, Corneal stated.

He further added that developing football at youth level was now key to improving football in T&T.

We have to allow young players the chance to be part of a club, Corneal declared. Players need to learn from each other. They need to understand winning and losing. Thats how we grow as persons. It allows us to socialise with friends... That belonging to something... he emphasised.

Meanwhile, Reena Gopaul, manager group brand management at Republic Bank, added: Our Republic Cup National Youth Football can be used as a stepping stone to what may one day be promising career in football.

One of the highlights of the 2023 Republic League is the All-Star weekend and College Fair, to be held from March 30-April 2 and will feature games from the leagues boys and girls top performers, allowing the international coaches to see the players in a game-setting. Already coaches from the USA and Germany have committed to having a look at the best performers.

Our high-performing players will also have the opportunity of demonstrating their talent to international coaches in our showcase matches and our skills camp. Additionally, the College Fair is another avenue for further development, giving the young players with talent the chance to translate it into real opportunities for further education abroad, Gopaul explained.

Anton Wolfe: Republic Cup a platform for youths
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday)

ANTON Wolfe is urging youngsters to view the Republic Cup National Youth Football League as a stepping stone in their football careers as he once played in the league which was instrumental in his development and it eventually led him to the 2006 World Cup.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany was the only time TT qualified for the tournament after narrowly missing out on qualification for the 1974 and 1990 editions.

Wolfe was one of the speakers at the 2023 Republic Cup launch at Republic Banks Sports Club, Barataria on Tuesday. Gateway Athletics International and the TT Football Association (TTFA) are supporting the league.

Wolfe said, I think this tournament helped me to unearth my talent that helped me to continue playing the football and knowing that I could reach far if I put in my dedication, sacrifices and hard work which I did. I played for numerous clubs in TT and also abroad.

The league will run from March 4 to May 27 featuring 71 clubs which will field over 150 teams. Six divisions will compete in the league including four boys divisions and two girls divisions. The boys will play in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 age groups and in the girls division the Under-16 and Under-20 age groups will be contested.

Over 3,000 footballers are expected to compete in the league. At the end of the league, the best players will be chosen to play in an all-star match. The match will give players the opportunity to be seen by scouts who may offer the players university scholarships overseas. A college fair will also be held where league participants will have the chance to interact with administrators from universities in the US.

Wolfe said many thought he would not have been selected for the 2006 World Cup, but his work ethic paid off.

I was a surprise selection on the 2006 World Cup team to some people, but I believe hard work does not go unrecognised.

He urged the footballers to keep believing in themselves.

I would like to say to the young players who want to make football or another sport part of their lifefailure is part of life, failure is part of success. Anyone that has not failed has not tried. Even if you fail once keep going, if you fail twice keep going. Wolfe encouraged the upcoming players to trust in God.

Technical director of the TTFA Anton Corneal said the league is beneficial. They need this platform. They cannot get to their true potential without this platform. We need players to play.

"If youngsters can play schools and club football they will be active for the majority of the year, said Corneal.

Reena Gopaul, manager group brand management, group marketing and communications at Republic Bank, said, We believe that this competition can be the impetus for the continued development of quality football at a national level. By having a pool of young talent from which to pull we can start now to hone their skills, foster training disciplinecharacter development and develop their talents as well to cultivate a new generation of Soca Warriors.

Managing director at Gateaway Athletics Shem Alexander is excited that the competition provides an avenue for players to showcase their potential for foreign coaches.

Republic Cup's 28th season kicks off on February 24
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

The 28th edition of the Republic Cup National Youth Football League (NYFL) will kick off on February 24.

The 2024 season will conclude on June 1, when the national finals in the respective age groups are contested. The finals of the Trinidad leg of the competition will be played on May 25-26.

At the launch of the upcoming season at the Republic Bank Sports Club in Barataria on January 22, both Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) technical director Anton Corneal and Gateway Athletics International managing director Shem Alexander gave ringing endorsements of the Republic Cup.

This year's competition will have three age group categories being contested among the boys under-14, under-16 and under-20 with the under-20 category being the lone age group to be contested among girls' teams.

The Republic Cup will have representation from five zones: Central, East, North, South and Tobago, with Alexander expecting the East to have the most representatives in the tournament.

The top two teams in the boys' under-14 and under-16 groups will advance to the Trinidad quarter-finals, with the East zone expected to have as many as four teams represented in the under-20 quarter-finals for the Trinidad leg of the tournament.

In each age group, the top team in Trinidad will tackle the triumphant team in Tobago to crown the national champion.

With Gateway Athletics overseeing the operations of the tournament for a third straight season, Alexander thanked the TTFA for its "indispensable support."

He said several players were able to land scholarships during last year's activities, which included April's All-star weekend, which exposed the players to representatives from at least four US colleges, along with foreign scouts. Alexander said a handful of players were also scooped up by German-based recruitment agency Next Level Talents, with goalkeeper Tor Fletcher, former T&T under-20 player Christian Bailey and the Tobago pair of Jonathan Gibbs and Kadeem Moses among the youngsters being recruited.

Alexander said the Republic Cup fosters a "strong sense of community" and he sees sport as the avenue to rebuild a harmonious T&T.

"The Republic Cup is not just a youth football tournament, it is a force for positive change."

Corneal said, "I am encouraged when I see the support from Republic Bank. They really are trying to make a difference."

The TTFA technical director said the Republic Cup was instrumental in harnessing the footballing and social skills of the nation's youth.

"This is just one area in our long-term development plan. We help the young people gain the opportunity to learn social values which are dwindling in our society.

"There will be the elite side, where players get the opportunity to ply their trade...but there is a bigger picture at play here. We are there for the clubs. We are there to meet their needs."

Last year, St Augustine FC emerged champions in the girls' under-20 age group.

Pro Series copped titles in the under-15 and under-17 age groups in Trinidad, with FC Ginga and Defence Force copping the respective under-13 and under-20 crowns.

Evolution FC making their mark in Edinburgh 500
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

ALTHOUGH they are a relatively new club that were registered in July 2022, Evolution FC are ready to make their mark on the local football scene and are targeting a successful campaign in the 2024 Republic Cup National Youth Football League (NYFL) which kicks off on February 24.

Through the collaborative efforts of co-directors and coaches Husani Thomas and Kern Cupid, a former national senior team defender, the Evolution FC project came to life after both men navigated the restrictions of covid19 in 2021 with their coaching methods. What started off with small training sessions with a handful of children in the Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas area soon blossomed into something far greater as the numbers gradually increased with the lifting of outdoor restrictions early in 2022.

(The journey) started with coaching during covid19, and then Kern and I decided to formulate the club. We thought about a few names and we landed on this one, Thomas told Newsday.

We said Evolution is what represents us best in terms of our vision. Our vision is, when a player comes to us, no matter their ability, skill level or age, by the time they come to us and spend time with us, they must evolve into a better player, a better person and a better contributor to society.

With sessions at their Edinburgh 500 recreation ground home venue, Thomas and Cupid, together with fellow coaches Khafra Anderson, Alana Aqui and Brendon Burke, have extended the Evolution FC membership to roughly 250 youngsters within the span of two years.

In their setup, Evolution FC have players from ages four to 23, and they also have approximately 20 girls in the club, most of whom participate in the under-8 age group.

The club sustains itself via a $200 monthly fee which is paid by members in the various age groups, and Thomas says Evolution FC are actively seeking sponsorship to assist the club in the long run.

We have strong principles as young men and human beings too and we try to instill those and pass those on to the kids so when they join us, they must be able to contribute positively to society, Thomas said.

We have visions which are aligned with the paths we have taken as young footballers and young men who are passionate about the game and wanting to improve and wanting to achieve goals, no matter what they may be.

Apart from contesting the Republic Cup tournament in 2023, when their under-15 team got a quarter-final finish in the Trinidad leg of the competition, the club also hosted their first one-day football tournament (Evolution Cup) last April and intend to host the second edition on March 23, 2024.

Evolution FC players entered the RBC Race For The Kids 5K in October, with the club also hosting an online SEA workshop and a first aid course for parents and more senior members within the clubs setup.

Pleasantville girls, Trendsetter score big in Republic Cup
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

Pleasantville's under-20 girls' team and Trendsetter Hawks' under-16 boys were among the big winners when the fifth round of the Republic Cup National Youth Football League was played over the weekend.

In the girls' South-Central under-20 category, Pleasantville showed no mercy against NEO Football Academy as they stormed to a mammoth 21-0 win in Balmain, Couva on Sunday. Pleasantville registered their fourth win from as many games in the tournament, and they had a pair of Gosines to thank for their thumping win, as sisters Nikita and Natalia Gosine accounted for ten of their team's goals in the riot.

Nikita, a national youth standout and the star player behind Pleasantville Secondary's run to the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) girls' national intercol title last year, scored six goals in the one-sided affair, with Natalia helping herself to a beaver-trick. Jada Shepherd also scored a hat-trick for Pleasantville, and Tyiesha Mark scored a double, as NEO had no answer for their opponents' attacking prowess.

In the other match in the South-Central group, Talent and Energy FC got a beaver-trick from Aaqila Virgil as they scored a 5-0 win against Crown Trace.

In the girls' under-20 East zone category, Pro Series and MIC Matura United (both 12 points) continued their fight for top spot atop the group table, with Matura managing a 2-0 win to go level on points with their counterparts. Tyeisha Griffith was the key player for Matura in the top-of-the-table encounter, scoring a goal in each half to give her team the three points.

In Tobago, girls' under-20 leaders Tobago Chicas (nine points) were held to a goalless draw by Jewels, while Black Panthers (eight points) moved to second spot with a 2-1 victory over Combined Ballers Academy. Serenity Charles and Naomi Scott scored the goals for Panthers to ensure they keep close tabs on the Chicas on the table.

In the North zone, the boys' under-16 category is quite competitive atop the table, as Trendsetter, City FC and Pro Series, last year's under-15 and under-17 winners in the Trinidad leg of the tourney, all locked on 11 points in a fight for the top spot.

Trendsetter laid down their marker on Sunday, as they hammered the Blue Hawks by a 14-1 margin in Maraval. Both Jahda Riley and Jaquan Phillip scored hat-tricks for Trendsetter as they played Blue Hawks off the park.

Pro Series shared the goals around in their game against Project Pro, as six different players found the net in a 6-0 drubbing.

Meanwhile, City FC got goals from Nadeem Grant, Anthony Mansoor and Keston Richards in their 3-0 victory against Cardinals FA.

Pro Series also had a favourable encounter with Cardinals FA in the North zone under-20 category, as Jaheim Bailey and former Malick Secondary star Lendelle Baptiste each scored a pair of goals in a handsome 7-1 win. Pro Series (15 points) maintained their perfect record with the victory, with the second-placed City FC (12 points) heavy on their trail.

In the North zone's under-14 age group, though, Cardinals stretched their winning streak to five games with a healthy 5-1 win over Belmont AFE in Maraval.

Cardinals (15 points) head the North zone under-14 table, with both Santa Cruz United and City FC tied on 12 points. On the weekend, City FC drubbed Santa Cruz in their head-to-head encounter when Jeremai Nanton scored a beaver-trick in a 5-1 drubbing.

The Republic Cup will take a break for the Easter weekend, before action resumes on April 6.

Cardinals, Ginga, Pro Series win Republic Cup zones with perfect records
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

Cardinals FA, Ginga FC and Pro Series were among the teams who shone brightest in Republic Cup National Youth League action last weekend, as they clinched their respective zones with perfect records.

In the North Zone under-14 category, Cardinals (21 points) notched their seventh straight win when they defeated Santa Cruz United by a 2-0 margin on April 13 to top their group. Deron Blackman was the star of the show for the Cardinals as he scored a brace to continue his team's superb run this season.

By virtue of topping the North zone, the Cardinals will play the second-placed team from the South zone in the quarterfinals next weekend. City FC (18 points) landed second spot behind the Cardinals when they got a resounding 13-1 win against First Kick Academy, with both Jeremai Nanton and Keanu Sealey scoring hat-tricks.

Cox Coaching Academy (18 points) currently head the South under-14 standings with a perfect record through six games, and they got a nail-biting 4-3 win over the third-placed Premier SC on April 13 to maintain their lead in the standings.

With Union Hall (15 points), Premier SC (12 points) and Uprising Youths (12 points) all still jostling for position on the South zone under-14 table, the group's two quarterfinal spots will be settled this Saturday when three outstanding fixtures are contested in the division.

In the Central zone, Creek SCC and Ultimate Unisons finished atop the under-14 group level on 17 points after grabbing contrasting wins last weekend. Creek got a 5-1 drubbing over Talent and Energy FC, while Ultimate Unisons emerged on the better side of a five-goal thriller with HVC FC (15 points), with Jaydon De Coteau scoring a late winner in the 3-2 result. In the process, Unisons leapfrogged HVC in the standings to beat them to a coveted quarterfinal spot.

In an exciting end to the East zone under-16 division, Ginga FC (21 points) claimed top spot in the standings when they edged the second-placed World Class Soccer Clinic by a 2-1 margin in D'Abadie on April 14. St Augustine Secondary player Marcel Valentine opened the scoring for World Class in the 18th minute, but second-half goals from Sherlon Nesbitt and Darren De Four propelled Ginga to a comeback victory and top spot in the standings.

In the South zone, Point Fortin Youth Academy and Union Hall finished group play level on 16 points apiece after seven matches in the under-16 division. Point Fortin ended the group with a convincing 7-0 win against San Juan Jabloteh, while Union Hall were held to a goalless draw by Premier SC.

In the Central zone under-16 category, Beatnix FC and Gasparillo Youths finished atop the group on 18 points apiece to clinch their quarterfinal spots.

Meanwhile, Pro Series, last season's under-15 and under-17 victors in the Trinidad leg of the competition, sealed top spot in the under-16 North Zone with a 2-0 win against Prisons. City FC relinquished second spot in the group when they were downed 1-0 by Trendsetter Hawks, who moved to second thanks to a curling free kick from Jaquan Phillip.

In the North zone under-20 division, Pro Series (21 points) claimed top spot in the group and bragging rights when they eked out a thrilling 3-2 victory over City FC (18 points) edging their opponents to second spot in the process.

Jabloteh (South), HVC (East) and Crown Trace (Central) and Eagles FC (Tobago) also landed top spot in their respective under-20 divisions.

MIC Matura ReUnited claimed top spot in the girls' under-20 East zone category, while the Pro Series girls cemented second spot in the East with a merciless 11-0 thumping over San Juan Jabloteh - with national youth attacker Rasheda Archer helping herself to a hat-trick.

In the girls' South-Central under-20 zone, Pleasantville FC took top spot in the group with a 2-0 result over Talent and Energy to maintain their perfect record.

Tobago Chicas narrowly clinched the girls' Tobago zone ahead of runner-up Black Panthers.
