I know he didn't make the team unless somebody on the forward line get hurt already.  I know I see he name on the standby list so as far as I know Twellman aint make the team.  I fine he is a real average player and he not ready fuh International ball yet, but that is jus my opinion.

Spain Provisional Squad:

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Santiago Canizares (Valencia).

Antonio Lopez (Atletico Madrid), Pablo Ibanez (Atletico Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Real Betis), Asier del Horno (Chelsea), Joan Capdevila (Deportivo Coruna), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Javi Venta (Villarreal).

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquin (Real Betis), Luis Garcia (Liverpool), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), David Albelda (Valencia), Ruben Baraja (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal).

Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid), Fernando Morientes (Liverpool), Raul (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia).

Sweden Provisional Squad:

This is not a provisional squad in my book. the article reads:

Spain coach Luis Aragones has named a 27-man squad for a FIFA World Cup™ get-together on 8 May

As far as I'm concerned he should do like everyone else and give an official provisional squad

How the Americans said Australia is weak ? to me they have a very good team, or atleast on paper, but in all fairness they made it through Uraguay.

Who here feel the Americans making second rounds. ?

As per Flex's request

Here is the list of all players having been selected for their countries last 9-12 qualifiers. It doesn't give you info on if they started, their posiitons and how much they actually played but its generally useful to figure out the players available to each coach. The figure on the right corresponds to each callup they received. I've also tried to note currently injured/suspended players with an asterisk. Here goes...

It will be updated to reflect the squads as they are formed.

I was saying the same thing too, but he get pick though after I check yahoo sport

I know he didn't make the team unless somebody on the forward line get hurt already.  I know I see he name on the standby list so as far as I know Twellman aint make the team.  I fine he is a real average player and he not ready fuh International ball yet, but that is jus my opinion.

yeah but the man lead the mls in scoring for the past 2 years and he now start scoring for the US.....I woulda still pick him over brian ching

All teams in the world cup should carry a youth player whether he plays or not, they should... he will gain the experience for the next world cup. 1994 Brazil (Ronaldo) and 1998 (Kaka) and 2006 England (Walcott) did it....

Who agree ?

In our case Anthony Wolfe is we youth on de team, but can he carry us in 2010. ? USA should have carried Adu...

Mexico axe three players from World Cup squad
Yahoo! Sports

MEXICO CITY, May 13 (Reuters) - Mexico axed defender Joel Huiqui and midfielders Israel Lopez and Jaime Lozano when they confirmed their final 23-man World Cup squad on Saturday.

The decision means that 37-year-old defender Claudio Suarez keeps his place and has a chance to play at his third World Cup following his appearances in 1994 and 1998.

"I'm sure everyone wanted the 26 to remain but unfortunately we have to give a list to FIFA and this is the way it has to be," Mexican Football Federation (FMF) director Guillermo Cantu told a media conference.

Cantu did not say why the three had been chosen.

The trio were in the provisional 26-man squad announced on April 2 and which had been training together since.

Mexico's clubs agreed to release their players early and only the four foreign-based players have been absent from their training camp.

Huiqui, who plays for Cruz Azul, has won eight caps, mainly in friendlies played in the last year.

Lopez, a defensive midfielder who plays for Mexican champions Toluca, made his debut in 2000 and has been in and out of the side since. He also missed out on the 2002 World Cup.

Lozano scored 11 goals in the World Cup qualifiers but has suffered a loss of form this year.

Coach Ricardo La Volpe has made a number of controversial choices for his squad.

The final 23 includes foreign-born Antonio Naelson and Guillermo Franco plus La Volpe's son-in-law Rafael Garcia. On the other hand, there has been no place for Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who many regard as the country's top player at the age of 33.

Mexico, who have never gone beyond the quarter-finals, will play against Portugal, Angola and Iran in Group D at the World Cup in Germany starting on June 9 after surprisingly being chosen as one of the eight seeds.

They are seen as potential dark horses after beating world champions Brazil at the Confederations Cup, although their form against European sides under La Volpe has been poor with only two wins in eight outings.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Oswaldo Sanchez (Guadalajara/Chivas), Guillermo Ochoa (America), Jesus Corona (UAG/Tecos)

Defenders: Jose Antonio Castro (America), Rafael Marquez (Barcelona), Mario Mendez (Monterrey), Ricardo Osorio (Cruz Azul), Francisco Rodriguez (Guadalajara/Chivas), Carlos Salcido (Guadalajara/Chivas), Claudio Suarez (Chivas USA), Andres Guardado (Atlas), Gonzalo Pineda (Guadalajara/Chivas)

Midfielders: Luis Perez (Monterrey), Pavel Pardo (America), Antonio Naelson (Toluca), Rafael Garcia (Atlas), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Ramon Morales (Guadalajara/Chivas)

Forwards: Jared Borgetti (Bolton Wanderers), Guillermo Franco (Villarreal), Francisco Fonseca (Cruz Azul), Omar Bravo (Guadalajara/Chivas), Jesus Arellano (Monterrey).

They look real focused.  Looks like they're in a secluded location.  Is time for the Soca Warriors to leace Trinibago and get stuck in.  Enough of this fanfare.

Huiqui had to be axed from the squad after T&T made the Wor ld Cup.  The mere possibility (no matter how small) of having to face Carlos again seriously downgraded his value.

I believe Mexico is not as good as some might think. The team has some great players. I like Quiquin's opportunistic attitude and his aggressiveness. However, Mexico is just too vulnerable when it is submitted to constant pressure.

Watching Mexico playing a slow and confused Congolese team the other day, I could clearly see why TnT beat Mexico in the wcq. My guess is TnT would again beat Mexico if those teams were to play another match...if TnT is not in its nonchalant form, that is!

The angles in the picture indicate it's a wide angle, not a zoom lense. I think they are running around him.

I'm also impressed that they are willing to train wearing Joma....dat's just plain embarrasing.

I'm also impressed that they are willing to train wearing Joma....dat's just plain embarrasing.

What is important is that they training, not what they wearing.  We want to be GQ whle we training and we ketching hell to beat Costa Rica who  have been to the WC several times.

Frivolous and stupid statement.  Teams shop around for the best deal.  We with Adidas and they cyar even get we flag right.  We might have been better off going with a smaller company that was hungrier to represent themselves.

Title: No Roque Junior...Well Done Parreira
Post by: real madness on May 15, 2006, 09:33:52 AM
BBC NewsBrazil boast impressive Cup squad

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira avoided any major surprises as the champions named their World Cup squad.
Parreira has already picked his starting XI for the opening match of the campaign against Croatia and the extra 12 names proved much as expected.

Rogerio Ceni, who has scored more than 50 goals, was named as third-choice goalkeeper with Marcos injured.

There was no place for central defender Roque Junior while Gilberto won a spot as reserve to left-back Roberto Carlos.

Roque Junior is recovering from injury and his place went to Lyon's Cris, while Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva is the only British-based player in the squad.

Sao Paulo skipper Rogerio Ceni and Corinthians midfielder Ricardinho are the only members of the squad who ply their trade in Brazil.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goalkeepers: Dida (AC Milan), Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)

Defenders: Cafu (AC Milan), Cicinho (Real Madrid), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin), Cris (Olympique Lyon), Luisao (Benfica)

Midfielders: Edmilson (Barcelona), Juninho Pernambucano (Olympique Lyon), Emerson (Juventus), Ze Roberto (Bayern Munich), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal), Kaka (AC Milan), Ricardinho (Corinthians)

Forwards: Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Robinho (Real Madrid), Ronaldinho (Barcelona), Adriano (Inter Milan), Fred (Olympique Lyon).

Nice squad...The central defense a little light though (except for Lucio and Cris). Despite not being my favorite because of his past Brazilian performances, I hadda hand it to Cris. He has been a star for Lyon and now Milan knocking on the door. I feel Cris hadda get a sweat even though they make it sound like he only get in the squad because Roque Junior injured. He is better than Juan and Luisao. There were some Cris fans on some other threads hoping he get a spot in the starting lineup ahead of RJ. Looking like reality now. I think RJ missing out could be a blessing in disguise

yup...... just like Emerson missing in the last cup '02 was a blessing in disguise (in my opinion)..Gilberto rose to the occasion......

and just like Dida dropping form before '02 was a blessing in disguise, for Marcos to step up big (he was the unsung hero last cup)

and just like Ricardo Gomes getting injured & Ricardo Rocha bowing out in '94 was a blessing in disguise...for Aldair and Marcio Santos to marhsall the central back....

I think Lucio & Cris are no weaker than Aldair & Marcio Santos '94, or Aldair & Junio Baiano '98......they should be arrite....

Italy pick Inzaghi for World Cup squad

ROME, May 15 (Reuters) - AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi has been included in Italy coach Marcello Lippi's 23-man squad for next month's World Cup finals.

The 32-year-old striker has not played for the national team since October 2003 due to a series of injuries but his recent club form has earned him a spot in the squad.

However, there is no place for Real Madrid forward Antonio Cassano or Livorno's Cristiano Lucarelli -- whose 19 goals in Serie A this season had pushed him into contention.

Udinese forward Vincenzo Iaquinta was given the nod ahead of Lucarelli as back up for target man Luca Toni, who is Europe's top scorer with 31 goals this season.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was included despite his link to an ongoing investigation into gambling.

Italy have been drawn in Group E for the finals along with Ghana, the Czech Republic and the United States.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Angelo Peruzzi (Lazio), Marco Amelia (Livorno)

Defenders: Cristian Zaccardo (Palermo), Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan), Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Gianluca Zambrotta (Juventus), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Fabio Grosso (Palermo), Massimo Oddo (Lazio), Andrea Barzagli (Palermo).

Midfielders: Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Simone Barone (Palermo).

Forwards: Luca Toni (Fiorentina), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Francesco Totti (AS Roma), Alberto Gilardino (AC Milan), Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Udinese).

Reserves: Morgan De Sanctis, goalkeeper (Udinese), Daniele Bonera, defender, (Parma), Franco Semioli (Chievo Verona), Marco Marchionni (Parma).

There are so many reason why I should not support Italy, having fallen so short so may times. But the azzuri is my teams and loyalty is more than supporting in good times you must support in the bad. But I don't think I could forgive them if the don't beat the US.

So come on Warriors and Azzuri do me proud.

The point Injunchile make is a valid one in my opinion.  The fact is....Brazil took their BEST PLAYERS in order to givbe them THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN.  It so happens that 99% their BEST PLAYERS play outside of Brasil.  Mexico took their BEST PLAYERS.  So happens 90% of the Mexican BEST PLAYERS play in Mexico.  Where do T&T's BEST PLAYERS play?

Edmilson is there, he listed as a midfielder, it is a position he is warming up to.

if is 4-4-2 as usual they playing my guess is Ronaldo and Adriano up front with Kaka and Ronaldinho behind...Robinho to be subbed...check dat attack nah...I guess meh player Rivaldo wasn't going to make it, I had a hint of a hope throughout but say what.

This is Cafu's 4th World Cup...de man still playing like he in the 20's...I wonder if he will be captain again.

It is a pity Kleberson didnt' make the squad but I guess if you playing in de Turkish league it will be tough...he was one of their best players in the 2002 final....glad to see Ze Roberto there, he is always consistent yet very underrated....and Serginho get salt again unfortunately

exactly...anybody who watch Confederation's Cup would have seen Gilberto started every game at left back. Gilberto Silva from Arsenal is a different player. They are both on the team. Only man who feel bad for really, is Renato. The man was a regular for Brazil right through, first defensive midfielder off the bench. But that was because Gilberto Silva had a long term back injury and Emerson was only reselected to the squad after the Copa America. He is a decent youth and having a great season with Sevilla. Edu and

Baptista is actually having a decent second half of the season with Madrid and is playing better and scoring more than Robinho right now (after looking out of his league for about half the season). The problem is, Baptista is not considered a forward for Brazil. When Sevilla signed him from the Brazil Under 23 team after the Gold Cup, he was a defensive midfielder. Even after the Sevilla coach converted him into a striker, he still played a few times for Brazil as a defensive midfielder. Now he is an attacking mid for Madrid...IMO he is still a better defensive midfielder

I see your point that if he is not good enough for the aussie, he is defintely not good enough for the azzuri. My point was even if improves to the level of his brother he has no chance of playing for the azzuri who has made it to every wc since 1958. The aussie has not played in WC since 1974 given that track record even if he improves his chances of playing are actually very slim.

Brazil's Adriano is a player for the big occasion

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 15 (Reuters) - Brazil striker Adriano's recent poor form for Inter Milan is not a concern and national coach Carlos Alberto Parreira expects him to come good on the big occasion.

As expected, Adriano was included in Brazil's World Cup squad on Monday and has been given a place alongside Ronaldo in the starting line-up for their opening match against Croatia on June 13.

Parreira has already announced his team for the game, barring injuries.

"Adriano is the sort of player who comes good at the right moment," Parreira told reporters. "When he's needed by Brazil, he appears. He was there at the Copa America (in 2004) and the Confederations Cup (in 2005)."

"Besides, when he is with the Brazilian team, he finds affection. He likes playing for Brazil and he feels very happy with the other players."

Adriano finished top scorer when Brazil won the 2004 Copa America, even though he only played because Parreira decided to field a second-string team.

He repeated the trick at the Confederations Cup, winning a place after Ronaldo asked not
to play and was top scorer with five goals.

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 15 (Reuters) - Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said he was not contemplating anything other than another World Cup victory as the defending champions named their 23-man squad for the finals on Monday.

Parreira, who sprang no surprises, said Brazil would be wary of pitfalls but that his mind was set on an unprecented sixth world title.

"We just think about winning," he said after announcing his choices.

"We don't allow negative thoughts anywhere near us, they take a long by-pass. Nobody is prepared for a defeat, we are prepared to win."

"We have a lot of quality," he added. "If you stop Ronaldinho, there are three or four others who can win a match. If you stop Ronaldo, another one pops up."

However, Parreira promised that Brazil, who face Croatia, Australia and Japan in their first-round group, would not take any of their opponents lightly.

"We know the World Cup is a treacherous competition," he said. "There are just seven games, it's knockout from the fourth game onwards and the technically weaker teams can spring surprises.

"It (being favourites) won't interfere, it's something that comes from outside. The players are very conscious that on the field, everything is equal and it's 11 against 11.

"We have to treat each game as a final and give each opponent our full respect, otherwise anybody could surprise us."

NOT NERVOUS

Parreira, who was also in charge when Brazil won the 1994 World Cup, denied he had been edgy when he named the Brazil World Cup squad for the second time in his career.

"I've never felt as calm and relaxed as I am today, despite the great responsibility of picking a Brazil squad for the World Cup," he said. "It's all perfectly under control."

The squad included Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Kaka with none of the biggest names missing and had been widely guessed beforehand, which did not worry Parreira.

"This shows that our job was done with good sense, criteria, and justice," he said. "I am happy people got it right. This is not the time for doubts, uncertainties and surprises."

One of the few eye-catching choices was Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, the scorer of over 50 goals from free kicks and penalties in his career. He won a place as third-choice keeper.

Marcos, the previous selection who plays for Palmeiras and was ever-present in the 2002 campaign, has failed to regain fitness after a series of nagging injuries.

There was no place for central defender Roque Junior but Gilberto, another German-based player, won a spot as reserve to Roberto Carlos at left back.

"A lot of excellent players have missed out, but we can't contemplate everyone," said Parreira

Twenty-one of the players are based abroad and the squad included 11 survivors from 2002. Ronaldo and Cafu were also present in 1994.

Parreira admitted there was concern that his side had not played a competitive international since their 3-0 win over Venezuela last October.

"We will have to work hard to overcome this handicap," he said. "But we have a base which was mounted over two years during the qualifiers so we're not starting from zero."

The world champions have one warm-up friendly to play against New Zealand in Geneva on June 4.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Dida (AC Milan), Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)

Defenders: Cafu (AC Milan), Cicinho (Real Madrid), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin), Cris (Olympique Lyon), Luisao (Benfica)

Midfielders: Edmilson (Barcelona), Juninho Pernambucano (Olympique Lyon), Emerson (Juventus), Ze Roberto (Bayern Munich), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal), Kaka (AC Milan), Ricardinho (Corinthians)

Forwards: Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Robinho (Real Madrid), Ronaldinho (Barcelona), Adriano (Inter Milan), Fred (Olympique Lyon)

We might have been better off going wi th a smaller company that was hungrier to represent themselves.

Tenorsaw, you miss my point.  Is good to get a good shoe deal, but it is more important to train in whatever shoe you have and win.  Costa Rica has a good track record of winning despite deh shoes.  We don't have that yet!
Title: Paraguay Squad
Post by: jimbo on May 15, 2006, 07:37:11 PM
ASUNCION, May 15 (Reuters) - Teenage midfielder Jose Montiel was included as Paraguay named their World Cup squad on Monday.

Montiel, 18, was one of a number of young players selected by coach Anibal Ruiz as Paraguay, who face England, Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago, head for their third successive World Cup finals.

'This is the future of our football,' Ruiz told reporters. 'More than 50 percent of this squad are young enough to play at another three World Cups.

'Montiel is part of a new generation which makes us optimistic about the capabilities of the young players.'

Other youngsters included were Bayern Munich midfielder Julio dos Santos, his club team mate Roque Santa Cruz, forward Nelson Haedo Valdez and midfielders Edgar Barreto and Cristian Riveros.

Montiel, who as child sold pies in the street to help his family earn some extra income, has made a huge impression since his professional debut at the age of 16 for Olimpia.

He played at the World Under-17 championships in Peru last year and made his full international debut against Venezuela as a 17-year-old.

'I'm immensely happy and full of pride,' Montiel told reporters.

At the opposite end of the age scale, Ruiz also included veterans Roberto Acuna and Jose Cardozo, despite their unimpressive form at club level.

Acuna, 33, had played only a handful of games this season for Deportivo Coruna in Spain while Cardozo, 35, has been released by Argentina's San Lorenzo after a lacklustre year.

'Cardozo is the most difficult merchandise to find in football, which is a goalscorer,' said Ruiz. 'If we have one, we musn't waste it.

'You don't play football with your age or identity card,' he added. 'You play it with what you have on the field.'

Acuna has played impressively for his country after making an international comeback in last year's World Cup qualifier at home to Argentina, which Paraguay won 1-0.

Paraguay reached the second round at the last two World Cups before falling to single-goal defeats against France and Germany respectively.

Goalkeepers: Justo Villar (Newell's Old Boys), Derlis Gomez (Sportivo Luqueno), Aldo Bobadilla (Libertad)

Defenders: Denis Caniza (Cruz Azul), Carlos Gamarra (Palmeiras), Julio Cesar Caceres (River Plate), Delio Toledo (Real Zaragoza), Jorge Nunez (Estudiantes), Julio Manzur (Santos), Paulo da Silva (Toluca)

Midfielders: Edgar Barreto (NEC Nijmegen), Roberto Acuna (Deportivo Coruna), Carlos Paredes (Reggina), Julio dos Santos (Bayern Munich), Carlos Bonet (Libertad), Cristian Riveros (Libertad), Diego Gavilan (Newell's Old Boys), Jose Montiel (Olimpia)

Forwards: Nelson Haedo Valdez (Werder Bremen), Roque Santa Cruz (Bayern Munich), Nelson Cuevas (Pachuca), Salvador Cabanas (Chiapas), Jose Cardozo (no club)

Ah believe this debate was brought up already but Ah guess we aint have room for a young player in d ranks that we could have included even to feel part of d team...

Post by: Brej on May 16, 2006, 11:03:33 AM
Argentina coach Jose Pekerman on Monday sprang no major surprises in his 23-man squad for the June 9-July 9 World Cup finals in Germany.

The squad includes a number who starred for the Argentinian juniors, who won the under-20 World Cup last year, including Barcelona's Lionel Messi despite the young forward struggling with a calf injury.

But there are also some more experienced hands on board, including Villarreal duo Juan Pablo Sorin and Juan Roman Riquelme, Javier Saviola of Sevilla and Manchester United's Gabriel Heinze.

"There is a permament evolution with footballers. Several of the under-20 footballers have made themselves noticed," said Pekerman.

"Before it would have been impossible for players of this category to come into the A team."

Noticeable absentees include Inter Milan duo Walter Samuel and Javier Zanetti, while one surprise call-up was that of West Ham's Lionel Scaloni.

Argentina play their opening first round Group C match against African Nations Cup finalists Ivory Coast on June 10 before going on to play Serbia/Montenegro and Holland.

Their final friendly will be on May 30 against World Cup debutants Angola in Naples' San Paolo stadium.

World Cup Squad

Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Boca Juniors), Leonardo Franco (Atletico Madrid/ESP), Oscar Ustari (Independiente)

Defenders: Nicolas Burdisso (Inter Milan/ITA), Gabriel Milito (Zaragoza/ESP), Juan Pablo Sorin (Villarreal/ESP), Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo La Coruna/ESP), Leandro Cufre (Roma/ITA), Roberto Ayala (Valencia/ESP), Gabriel Heinze (Manchester United/ENG)

Midfielders: Maximiliano Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid/ESP), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan/ITA), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal/ESP), Lionel Scaloni (West Ham/ENG), Luis Gonzalez (Porto/POR), Javier Mascherano (Corinthians/BRA), Pablo Aimar (Valencia/ESP)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona/ESP), Hernan Crespo (Chelsea/ENG), Carlos Tevez (Corinthians/BRA), Javier Saviola (Sevilla

I agree with Kicker..Lucho is a player.
What is the deal with Zanetti? Injured? Retired? or just dropped? The man is a boss.

Only surprise is Zenetti. Argentina will suffer from a lack of Goalkeeping and not much depth at the back. Not picking Samuel was good he fouls too much because he is slow. This back line is quick and technical.
Yes they young up front but pace like fire and mixed on the ground and in the air

Dropped Demichelis 'lost the will to live'

BERLIN, May 16 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich midfielder Martin Demichelis says he has lost the will to live after missing out on a place in Argentina's World Cup squad.

"It's not only that I don't have any desire to play anymore -- I don't have any desire to live," Demichelis was quoted in German media as telling an Argentine television network.

Demichelis, 25, was unexpectedly dropped by Argentina coach Jose Pekerman when he named his 23-man squad on Monday.

Demichelis moved to Bayern in 2003 from River Plate and has become a bulwark in front of the defence, helping the team win two championships and two German cups in the last two years.

Argentina are grouped with the Netherlands, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro in the World Cup finals in Germany which begin on June 9.

The lowdown on the world's best
18 May 2006

The quadrennial, month-long carnival that is the FIFA World Cup™ finals is not just about the football, just as football itself is so much more than just '22 hirelings kicking a leather ball', as was once famously suggested.
From the tens of thousands of visiting fans to the hard-working volunteers, many factors conspire to make the FIFA World Cup a spectacle without peer in the world of organised sport. However, one thing is certain: without the players, 736 footballers from 32 different nations spread over six continents, nothing else would really matter.

Whether they started their journey on bumpy Caribbean pitches or in the cathedrals of the European game, they come to Germany all in search of the same thing: glory, respect and a chance to lift the most-coveted prize in sport, the FIFA World Cup.

FIFAworldcup.com is the place to come to find out about the men who will write the story of the 18th FIFA World Cup. From the tournament's eight new teams to the silken-footed stars of Brazil, we have compiled the most comprehensive collection of player profiles available anywhere. You will find a biography, career history and exclusive written profile of every player in every squad, together with extended profiles of five key players from each team.

Of the 736 players, there are seven preparing for their fourth FIFA World Cup: Cafu and Ronaldo (both Brazil), Oliver Kahn (Germany) Mohammed Al Deayea and Sami Al Jaber (both Saudi Arabia), and Kasey Keller and Claudio Reyna (both USA). Only Cafu, Al Deayea and Al Jaber actually appeared in all three previous tournaments while USA goalkeeper Keller is the only player going to Germany who was at the 1990 finals.

Keller may be a veteran at 36 but he is a youngster compared to Tunisia goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel, the tournament's oldest player. He turned 40 in April and in the entire history of the FIFA World Cup, only Roger Milla, Pat Jennings, Peter Shilton and Dino Zoff have been older.

By contrast the youngest player in the competition, England's Theo Walcott, is just 17 and will become the FIFA World Cup's youngest ever scorer if he finds the back of the net in Germany.

Title: Re: Look How these guys TRAIN !!!
Post by: grskywalker on May 18, 2006, 09:21:31 AM
These pics just make me realize something.  Allyuh ent notice that in 95% of T&T training pics man smiling or just walking around..hmmm interesting

Careful preacher I get pinned to the wall making that observation last year before the US game after looking at some of the training pics. We did lose that game. But keep in mind they are just pics at that moment, we not there with them day in or day out to see what they doing or not doing

Relax and have faith that Beenie will have them ready!
Title: Squads Revealed

I know it might be a bit premature for some times, as injury may force some coaches to change up their times, but it's a nice look at the named squads...
