Ballack, Klose should be fit for Italy.
By NESHA STARCEVIC, AP Sports Writer.

BERLIN (AP) -- How would Germany fare without captain Michael Ballack and goal-minded Miroslav Klose? The host nation hopes it won't have to find out in its World Cup semifinal against Italy.
Ballack and Klose both cramped up during Germany's quarterfinal win over Argentina. Klose was substituted out after scoring a late equalizer, while Ballack played through extra time and took one of the decisive penalties.
That match was Friday and the Germans don't have much time to recover before Tuesday's semifinal in Dortmund.
"They are getting physiotherapy and both will be fit and able to play," assistant coach Joachim Loew said Sunday of Ballack and Klose.
Germany's staff, however, has often downplayed injuries.
Klose had a bruised calf and Ballack limped at the end of regulation and throughout the extra time, getting treatment on his calf several times on the sidelines.
Ballack entered the tournament with a calf injury and did not play in Germany's opening match against Costa Rica. He then missed some training with an ankle injury that also bothered him before the World Cup.
He's loomed large in the German midfield, getting back to clear balls defensively while also directing the attack. Klose has scored five of Germany's 11 goals and leads the tournament.
It would be a huge setback if either misses Tuesday's semifinal.
Italy also has injury problems -- defender Alessandro Nesta is still recovering from a right thigh injury and remains in doubt.
The semifinal match between two three-time winners has the potential to be a World Cup classic, but Loew warned against too high expectations, saying both teams would be cautious -- much as Argentina and Germany played Friday.
"Italy has been playing the same way for 60 years, it won't give up that philosophy now," Loew said. "They wait for their chance, they are patient."
Germany has never beaten Italy in four World Cup matches. The last time they played in the tournament was the 1982 final, which Italy won 3-1.
Overall, Italy leads the all-time series 13-7, with eight draws.
Going to Dortmund could be an advantage for Germany. It has 13 wins and one draw -- and no losses -- in noisy Westfalen Stadium.
Italy beat Germany 4-1 in a friendly in March, a defeat that nearly led to the firing of coach Juergen Klinsmann.
"We are not thinking of that now at all," Loew said. "We are a different team now."

World cup history is not on Germany's side, but then it's ancient history since they haven't met since 1982. Now we have the homefield - Dortmund no less where we've never lost, and a desire to reverse that lousy friendly before the World Cup. Hopefully Ballack and Klose are indeed fit enough to last the whole game. Let's rock on over Italy.

FIFA suspend Frings following Argie-bargy
ESPN Soccernet

July 3, 2006

Germany's World Cup hopes have been dealt a blow after FIFA banned Torsten Frings from tomorrow's semi-final with Italy.

The Werder Bremen midfielder, one of the outstanding players of the quarter-final victory on penalties against Argentina, was caught on television throwing a punch at Julio Cruz during a melee at the end of the match.

FIFA's disciplinary committee has decided the 29-year-old was guilty of violent conduct and imposed a one-match suspension, with another suspended ban that would come into force should he misbehave again in the next six months.

The decision means Frings will be available for the final, should Germany beat Italy, or the third-place play-off.

FIFA's disciplinary committee took the action after new television pictures which showed Frings throwing a punch at Inter striker Cruz.

The German FA were given until 1pm today to submit a defence but after hearing their submission the disciplinary committee ruled Frings was an 'active participant in the incidents following the final whistle'.

The fracas happened after the penalty shoot-out on Friday night, when Argentina players and officials kicked, punched and pushed players and coaches from the German squad. Frings denied any active part in the incident but the pictures show him retaliating.

Argentinian defender Leonardo Cufre was red-carded after the fracas in which he kicked German defender Per Mertesacker. He and Argentina midfielder Maxi Rodriguez have both been charged with violent conduct and have until Wednesday to make their submissions.

Meanwhile, FIFA have insisted the Italian football federation played no part in bringing Frings' involvement to their attention. The pictures were first shown on Italian TV before then shown in Germany.

FIFA communications director Markus Siegler said: 'There was no attempt from the Italian federation to incite FIFA to do something. This footage was shown on a public channel in Germany.'

Certain teams have their boogie teams and though people say that is BS. It is always on the back of players minds because the media never allows them to forget. Germany are at home, they have the rhythm, fitness and belief to win it all. However, Italy have been their boogie team in World Football and they need to get that monkey off their back. The problem is this Italy team is one of the best in years, good defense, outstanding GKer and fire power with depth. Yet I am not a fan of the Italian way, but they wll prove difficult to beat.
So if they go at Germany and take it to them, Italy will win. If they return to their defending in numbers and counter attack, I will say Germany will win.

I heard too that Oliver Bierhoff started taunting the Argentines as they were walking off the field and that added fuel to the fire, particularly as we was not even a player...but rather a 'suit'

lotsa final rematches in the rounds leading up to the final.

Argentina-Germany...rematch of the '86 & 90 final

Brazil-France...rematch of the 98 final

Italy-Germany...rematch of the '82 final

Argentina-Holland (first round)...rematch of the '78 final

Goin' with Germany on this one. Italy's team is more talented, but I think the Germans are fitter, and have serious sense of belief at this point. They will not die easy.

This game has degenerated into a boring routine set of exchanges with no one player able to shake things up individually and add some skill and imagination to each attack....Good pace & technique to the game, but a serious lack of imagination and flare...BORING !! A goal now might open things up.

Ah hope France or Portugal beat whichever team wins this.

Hard luck Germany, great team, great job by the players, excellent work by Klinsman and staff. They could walk wid theirr heads held high.
As for Italy I eh see an Italian team attack so much since 1982.

I eh know about this game. From my perspective it looked as if Germany played alacklustre game. Not fully mounting any real threatening attacks. Italy  barely holing on . The game going back and forth and then BRAP!!!!! two late goals.

Italy did have the better scoring chances inthe extra time and took it to Germany. Ah figure that German time was out all night. Not only that with an All European  contingent, it appears that the styles of play are so similiar that what is missing is the unknown the contrast to bring out different skills from the players.

The intensity  of an Asia aganist Europe or a South America aganist Africa was missing for me. Somehow this game did not have an edge to it. Well until the extra time.

This game changed from one of the worst games in the tournament to one of the best in the space of 2 minutes.......extra-time picked up a bit, and the goals were a perfect climax.....good game Italy. Hard luck Germany, quality won out in the end.

Somehow this game did not have an edge to it. Well until the extra time.

T&T and Brazil both out so my interest in the world cup doh have any emotional attachment anymore

EXCEPT

I would not have minded the Germans winning.  Not because I like the Germany football team or anyting so, but because they were the absolute best hosts one could hope for.

From the Deutsche Bahn ticket officers when yuh land in de Frankfurt Airport, to all de vendors outside de Haumptbanhof, to de people who helpin yuh out wit directions, to all dem Germans who start singin Treeneedad Tobago oh oh oh oh when we only had we one chant against Sweden, to de friendly ladies on de lil strip about 4 blocks down from de train station....it could go on and on.

This was my first World Cup experience and the hospitality of the German people in general was one of the more memorable experiences of the whole trip.

For that reason...I feel a little sad today that Germany lost against Italy.  Had they won the final, it would have been a fitting reward for their hospitality.

Give Jack his jacket man...Italy played a boss game (well at least 2nd half and extra time) and of all those who left, they've played the best all around ball (the australia game notwithstanding). I have them pencilled in.

France only start looking decent since the second half against Spain...

I sit down with some Italian watching the game, so i say "what is allyuh prediction" they say Italy only if Del Piero eh play. Almost every man to a T say Del Piero overated. Man bawl like dey loss ah puppy when they sub he in. When he score they say "game did already over, he is still shit" hahahhahah

This was an equal game but in the end I felt Italy deserved the game. They hit post and then cross bar. Come the end of the 1st over time, I say Italy looking tired bring on Inzagi he go run down he grand mother for a ball. Ah man say doh worry we resting for the big push. Podboski miss ah sitter just on time, man gone silent. Then Italy come out runnin, like some say last call. in the end what a game. Finally something fiiting for a WC in these stages. Both france and Portugal must be watch dat and raise deh eye brow. I know both them hoping their game don't go to overtime, so who ever win may ketch Italy a likkle tired.

Pirlo master performance
Gattuso was not only dstroying but creating
Cannavaro & Matterrassi biteing tack, dem two real cover the team
Golden Boy Totti remains a shadow

My MOM......Fabio Cannavaro.  What a player!  Pirlo not far behind.  But in truth....both teams put in sterling efforts.  0-0 the score may have been right up to the 128th minute.....but it was a game more than worthy of a WC semi final.

Wha yuh thought about Inaquia or whaever he name is Observer?  Da man is a BEAST!!!

Great Game!

Even the ref was a boss. The man eh fall for nutten, call a consistant game and he let the fellas play and let the game flow. When a player dive, he just carry on with the game and the players and them just get up and carry on with dey business as if to say 'respect ref...you catch me dey'. He should ref the final.

Anybody see the similarities between this WC and Euro 2000
Italy beat the home team (Holland) in the semis of Euro 2000 and now they beat the home team Germany in the semis.

Portugal meets France in the other semi. Last time Figo and Zidane were maestros at their peak. Now they are the old masters looking for one last hurrah. Well we all know what happened in Euro 2000...will this be a repeat of history for France? Or will Italy pull a 'Brazil'. It took Brazil 24 years to win their 4th WC...Well it has been 24 years since Italy won their 3rd. If Portugal wins the WC, it will be a historic first AND they will have a coach with a perfect 100% record over 2 WCs. Imagine Scolari is 2 games away from an unbelievable WC record..he already holds the record for most consecutive wins...but back to back WCs with different countries...without ever losing..that would be something.

Had they won the final, it would have been a fitting reward for their hospitality.
yeah Palos ah agree fuh everything except the Brazil part lol
i would also like to add all the free subway rides and 5 ply toilet paper lol

Germany go be back though.  Their squad is a young one.  They set for a few years.  The big game experience will do them a world of wonder.  I have always admired tham.  People always talk about their record before de WC.  Yet still they always show up fit to play 120 minutes and have never placed below a Quarter Finals in a WC.  It almost makes you feel as though they take little stock in other competitions and dey does jes wake up for de WC.  We already know their penalty taking prowess.  18 penalties in 4 WCS, 1 missed.  A shocking statistic considering the do or die situations they were in.  Ah never forget what a hobbling Rummenigge did to France.  Dat is a lasting memory.  But Germany have a right to be proud.  Their soccer is on the rise again.  They need to find a new Ballack who really was a shadow of himself and not as fit as the rest of the squad as he just returned from injury.  But all in all...a round of applause for dem :applause:.

The game was a boss game...nice flow...good officiating.  These two teams played down to de last second of overtime.  It was like a throw back game how man used to play football long time.  Play to score and win.  How many coaches would have sat back and played defense for the last ten minutes of regular time and overtime?  You would think that Klinsmann of all coaches would have called off the attack and taken his chances with penalties at de end.  He did not.  Germany went down bravely to a skillful and experienced Italian team.  Thanks to both teams for a real nice game.

Not because ah is a moderator or not because ah went Fatima.....but ah believe the Italians HAD TO GO for the win in extra time.  If it had only go to penalties....given the German record and the Italians less than stellar record in the same situation....they knew their ass was dark if it come to dat.

Jes my 2 cents.

Italy deserve that game especially since they come out in extra time attacking
to me PIRLO the best most consistent midfielder the entire WC and that build up was wicked the man stay composed and make a killer no look delivery, he wicked
canavarro the best defender nobody could pass tha man they go even stronger if nesta come back-if he does return

The last time Italy won the world cup, Paolo Rossi, their top scorer was on the back end of bribery charges/allegations....look at what the Italian teams are facing now.....

Did someone say Omen ?

That game in 82 with the hobbler is what make me dislike Germany when Schmacher played Batista and the jokey referre give a goal kick.

I now feel it for them as said a million times they were the perfect host. We can learn something from them for when the100,000 Indians come for the Cricket WC

Around de 80th minute, de ref call ah free kick against Italy when de foul ocurred inside de penalty area.  Dat was too tick tack a foul to call penalty in a game of dis magnitude.  But why make de call at all?  De ref shoulda jes wave play on like nutten eh happen.

De only other thing I eh like is dat blasted penalty diver gone and score.

in the last two matches germany play odonkor and he look strong. like this game he turn into odonkey? italy completely neutralize the germans substitutions. and gilardino and iaquinta had some nice chances too. but pirlo definitely a head above everyone on the field.

germany deserve much respect this tournament, manily because they are one of the few teams committed to attacking football.   Yet when the ball lost they were so fit, the transition to defense looked effortless. Ballack is a modern midfielder and some people say he was not at his best, but he looked good to me. Willing to work both sides of the ball, it would have been interesting if he had Frings with him this game. Lahm for me is the big surprise. nutten eh passing he so and when the back line make mistakes he cleaning up with his covering. Then yuh turn around and he in the attack. Great tournament for him. But overall the team impressive and all the criticism of Lehman he was very good this tournament, dem Italian could not get their corners past him.

Italy are a liitle more measured and what I liked was how they had a plan in their build up should Pirlo be marked. Gattuso came and in and was the link in those situation. Soon Germany gave up on it and Pirlo found space again. At the risk of repating myself Italy are the most balanced team. Imagine after yuh work hard to break down that back line, Buffon facing yuh. The man like ah dam Octopus in goal.
Up front Italy have fire power to burn and even if you could hold them off they have more to come and they working hard no ass. They eh waiting fuh balls they moving all the time, especially running behind yuh. Imagine them still have bong to score Inzagi to drop on people.

Palos what I like about all the Italian strikers / front runners is they working hard to drag defenders out of position. They running behind, wide coming to the ball and spinning. Yuh right real beast wok.

del Piero I never liked but he took his goal well. More props to the set up man nice feed.

I doh find Odonkor play dat bad....he had some good runs, nice touches and speed to burn yesterday...yuh forget he was the same man who cross de ball to Podolski in the dying seconds of the second half and the man real throw away....I agree his delivery could have been a bit better in extra time....

boy italy have depth for days....all yuh eh realize Nesta not even playing and hasn't been playing for the last 3 games...and as Observer say Bound to Score Inzaghi on de bench

Pirlo and Cannavaro was easily the best players on the pitch for me....

Respeck to the Ref who handled himself well, except for dat pantyman Totti dive he fall for in de second half (when Totti was holding his head when de man brushed his leg).....all yuh remember also when Totti make a 360 degree flip in de air trying to manufacture a foul and the ref wave play on....ah almost dead when i see dat flip.....

if Totti even play close to his potential, Italy would be so much more potent in attack and dat scary....
