FRESNO, Calif. (March 24, 2007) - It was a battle that many Trinidadians would have paid to see,Tina Charles of UConn going against Gillian Goring of NC State for a place in the Elite 8 of women's basketball.If these two young ladies were ever to team up for Trinidad  along with pro player Pietra Gay and a few other pros in Europe,the Trinidad team will be unstoppable in the Caribbean Chapionships.The 6'7" Goring a star since her teenage years in Trinidad finish the battle with 10pts,5rebs,1blk in 29mins of work while the 6'4" Tina Charles who is in line for NCAA rookie of the year award finish the battle with 17pts,4rebs,1blk in 31mins of work.

Fueled by an 8-0 run over the first 3:30 of the second half, the No. 1 seed University of Connecticut women's basketball team defeated No. 4 seed North Carolina State 78-71 on Saturday night at the Save Mart Center to advance to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive season.

Junior Charde Houston (San Diego, Calif.) led all scorers with 18 points while sophomore Kalana Greene (Saint Stephen, S.C.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Freshman Tina Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.) put up 17 points while sophomore Renee Montgomery (St. Albans, W.Va.) completed the four players in double figures with 12 points.
Connecticut improves to 32-3 overall and has won 18 of its last 19 overall. North Carolina State closes out the 2006-07 with an overall mark of 25-10.
Tonight's win advances Connecticut to the Regional Finals for the 13th time in the program's history - including seven of the last eight seasons overall.

The Huskies return to action on Monday night (March 26) to face No. 4 seed LSU in a Regional Semifinal match up beginning at 9 p.m. (ET) in a nationally-televised ESPN broadcast for a berth in the 2007 Final Four in Cleveland.
UConn improves to 13-2 all-time in NCAA Regional Semifinals contests. UConn has won 26 of its last 28 NCAA Tournament games overall.
North Carolina State made an early statement with by taking a 10-4 lead over the first 3:31 and led by as many as seven as it shot .548 (17-of-31) from the field in opening 20 minutes.
Connecticut trimmed the North Carolina State lead to one at intermission (37-36) as it out-scored the Wolfpack 17-11 over the final 7:12 of the first half.
Greene knocked down two free throws while Swanier drained a 3-pointer with under 30 seconds to play in the first half, to take give Connecticut a 36-34 advantage.

N.C State came back to take the lead at 37-36 heading into the locker room at the halftime break on a layup by Khadijah Whittington with 10 seconds remaining.
Charles came out firing to open the second half with two baskets that fueled the 8-0 run over the opening 3:30, giving the Huskies to take a 44-37 advantage. Houston completed the old fashioned 3-point play to put UConn by eight at 47-39 with 16:17 to play in the game.
A steal by Houston transitioned into a jumper from the free throw line by Charles giving Connecticut a 10-point bulge at 55-45 with 11:15 on the clock.
A Charles' block led to a coast-to-coast lay-in by Montgomery to give the Huskies their largest lead at that point at 11, with 10:12 left in the game.
Swanier nailed her second trey of the game with 6:09 to play up 64-58 - which halted a 8-0 North Carolina State run, which got it to within three at 61-58.
The Huskies sealed the game from the free throw line as it connected on 11-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe, led by Greene who drilled all six of her attempts over that span en route to a career-best 11-of-12 effort for the contest.
Swanier finished with eight points and three steals while junior Brittany Hunter (Columbus, Ohio) posted four points with an assist and a steal in only eight minutes of play.

UConn extends its NCAA Tournament winning streak to 15 consecutive games when it plays as a No. 1 seed. UConn has posted a mark of 36-3 in NCAA Tournament games dating back to the 2000 season

royal notes: Tina Charles father is Trinidadian and owns Charlies Record Shop in Brooklyn and Gillian Goring was a teenage star in Trinidad before migrating to finish her high school in the US.She has also represented Trinidad in the past.
