North East Stars aiming to shine even brighter in 2005.
By: Joel Villafana.

Guyanese Coach James Mc Clean is under enormous pressure to repeat the success North East Stars enjoyed last season when they made history by winning the T&T Pro League for the first time in their short three-year history.
Nevertheless, Mc Clean will not too be overwhelmed, he admitted to ‘ttproleague.com’, “Yes there is some pressure going into the new season—as champs everybody wants to beat you, and that’s the challenge we face, but when the season starts the boys will be up for the task.”
The successful coach said this year; discipline will be our main watchword, as we need to better the standard of play we displayed last season. The North East Stars coach was happy with his pre-season preparation, saying, “We basically used the time to regroup and re-focus on the job at hand and we are now re-energized and ready to go.”
The Sangre Grande based outfit has lost big influential defender Charles Pollard to San Juan Jabloteh—Coach Mc Lean has admitted that it’s a big loss—but said “It was like when Manchester United lost Beckham—we have moved on, and we have some new players that are expected to make their mark this season.”
There are four new faces in the North East Stars line up, Jabloteh’s Fabian Garcia, Tobago United’s Dwayne Jack Caledonia Fire’s Brent Antoine and Vincentian import Melvin Andrews. There are also a couple of young under 20 players that have come through ranks in the club—National under 20 player Kendall Jagdeosingh and Keston Pierre.
But the core of the winning team from 2004 will be back aiming for more success—the league’s leading goal scorer last season Jerren Nixon is making a return and once again a lot will depend on his goal scoring ability. The Guyanese trio of Howard Lowe, Abassi Mc Pherson and Carey Harris, along with St. Vincent’s Kendall Velox will be the heart of the Sangre Grande based outfit once again.
Coach Mc Lean is not undaunted by the prospect of defending the league title, “I am very confident—but not overconfident, we will be keeping our feet on the ground and not getting carried away.”
“I believe the chemistry and the togetherness we have are our greatest strengths and that’s what got us through last year and will see us forge on in 2005,” Mc Lean boasted.
Mr. Mc Clean’s said his objectives are simple—“I want to see North East Stars successfully defend the league title and capture a knockout title, but more importantly the Guyanese coach will like to leave an indelible mark in local club football as a foreign coach in the T&T Pro League—and in the meantime turning North East Stars a football dynasty in the region.”

North East Stars Rebound At The Expense Of Jabloteh

An all important double by National Quarries North East Stars striker Anthony Wolfe gave the struggling Defending Champions a come from behind 2-1 win over former Champions CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground.

The Stars playing in front of their home fans fell behind early on when overlapping full back Ancil El cock stabbed one past North East Goalkeeper Trevor Nottingham to give San Juan Jabloteh a 1-0 lead.

There was a deafening silence at the Sangre Grande Recreation ground—but there was no panic on the North East Stars bench and Anthony Wolfe stepped up and cracked a low drive from outside the six yard box that got past the outstretched hand of Durance Williams in goal for Jabloteh, the score tied at one.

In the 37th minute the winner came, from a goal mouth scramble, with Wolfe hitting the back of the net to the delight the home fans at the Sangre Grande Recreation ground the Stars holding on for a 2-1 win.

Once again Jabloteh’s strikers failed to hit the target—and North East Stars benefited and late in the game could have gone further in the lead when Kern Navarro shattered the bar with a thunderous long rage effort.

North East Stars jumped to 3rd in the standings on 7 points and Jabloteh is in 4th place on 5 points from 5 games.

Caledonia Win Three Straight

Caledonia AIA Fire did enough to get past United Petrotrin 2-0 to continue their winning streak.

For the larger part of the game, Fire dominated proceedings and got goals
from Devon Modeste and Kevin Baptiste. Petrotrin inexperience showed up again and they failed to put away a few half chances they received on the night.

Caledonia is making the 2nd spot their own, they are now on 10 points eight shy of runaway leaders W Connection, while Petrotrin still 2nd from bottom only on 3 points.

Defending League Champions National Quarries North East Stars have released five players with immediate effect.
The Guyanese trio of Carey Harris, Kayode Mc kinnon and Abassi Mc Pherson have all been issued with letters of termination following the violation of their contracts with the club, while Wilfrod Joseph and Davidson Neptune both mutually agreed with North East Stars to part ways.
This was confirmed by owner and CEO of North East Stars Darrel Mahabir.
Mahabir told ttproleague.com that decisions had to be made and admitted there was dissension in the camp.
“These players have been the backbone of the club, but this season they have failed to corporate and have not been giving 100%, so as CEO I had to make the tough decisions,” said Mahabir.
He added, “They will certainly be missed, but this is professional football and life goes on.”
“We have not brought in any replacements just yet—but we do have our eyes on a couple of players, however, we have promoted a number of players from within our youth ranks, the likes of Anthony Wolfe, Glenton Wolfe, Kendall Jagdeosingh, Keston Pierre, Shervin Charles and Kevin Navarro.
North East Stars have struggled this season and find themselves in 5th position on the Pro League standings on 15 points, so far they have played 11 games won 4, lost 4 and drawn 3.
However, they bounced back in their last game, surprising Pro Bowl Champions San Juan Jabloteh with a 2-1 win and Darrel Mahabir re-assured his faith in Guyanese born Coach James Mc Lean, saying, “I have full confidence in Mc Lean’s ability as a coach, I still believe he is a brilliant coach and he has done a lot for North East Stars.”

Andre Toussaint and Atiba Charles scored first-half goals to help W Connection maintain their 10-point lead at the top of the T&T Professional Football League’s Senior Division standings. Toussaint and Charles’s goals were good enough to lead W Connection to a 2-1 victory over defending league champions National Quarries North-East Stars on the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground yesterday. Toussaint scored his 10th goal of the season in the 14th minute and Charles doubled the score in the 24th minute.
Fabian Garcia reduced the score for “Stars” from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, but it was too little too late for the champion side.
With the win, W Connection improved to 36 points from 13 matches — 10 more than San Juan Jabloteh, who blanked Caledonia AIA Fire 2-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.
Trent Noel got the opening goal for Jabloteh almost on the stroke of half-time and Kerry Baptiste sealed the win five minutes before full-time for the San Juan club, Baptiste converted an 82nd minute penalty, after Jason Marcano was brought down by defender Mark Small, Jabloteh now with 26 points.
Over at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, team captain Devon Jorsling did the double to lead Defence Force to a 5-0 victory over Tobago United. Jorsling netted in the 12th and 64th minutes while Kevon Carter got into the scoring in the 23rd minute, Anton Pierre in the 67th and Christopher Durity in the 87th.

North East Stars not willing to throw in the towel
By Joel Villafana (ttproleague.com)

Struggling is an under-statement—but the Defending League Champions National Quarries North East Stars are not giving up.

The Sangre Grande Stars have found life extremely difficult, as they have not been able to play with the consistency required this season.

The ‘Stars’ currently lie in 5th place on the standings on 16 points—20 points adrift of run away leaders W Connection, and at this stage it seems near impossible for the boys from Sangre Grande to mount a serious challenge to defend their title.

However, the ‘Stars’ head coach Jimmy Mc Lean is a determined and optimistic character—and he told ttproleague.com, “I am not willing to throw in the towel just yet, its too soon, you never say die until you are dead.”

“I am hopeful that the likes of Jabloteh and Defence Force play their part in slowing down Connection and give us an outside chance to fight our way back to the top. It’s not going to be easy but we will be giving it our all,” added Mc clean.

North East have experienced some trying times this season, having to sack 5 of their top players, and Coach Mc lean admitted they are in the rebuilding stage.

The Guyanese born coach said, “I am currently looking for at least 2 more players—guys who wants to come and give their all for North East Stars, but I have confidence in my team and I sincerely believe we have what it takes to rebound.”

Mr. Mc lean, was quick to give kudos to leaders W Connection.

“Hats off to connection, they are the most organized bunch this season, they are playing like a well oiled unit and they have worked hard and are playing well and they deserve to be out front at this time,” concluded Mc lean.

North East revival continues with 1-0 win over Tobago.
By: Gordon Pierre reports (ttproleague.com).

SANGRE GRANDE REC. North East Stars continued their revival after the Gold Cup break with a workman like 1-0 over a spirited Tobago United team at the Sangre Grande Recreation ground on Sunday.
Coming off back to back wins against Police, North East were looking to continue their upward climb and started the game like a side on a mission and should have taken the lead in as early as the 5th minute, but Andre Charles shot was over the bar.
A minute later Anthony Wolfe hit straight at the keeper after a beautiful build up between Randolph Jerome and Kendall Velox set him free on the left side.

The game continued a pace with both teams being unable to settle on the uneven surface.
In the 17th minute Anthony Wolfe was again guilty of missing an easy chance, when he hit over bar from inside the six-yard box after Randolph Jerome had headed on a Velox cross.
North East at this time was launching attack after attack on the Tobago United team who to their credit defended staunchly.
In the 26th minute Velox had the Tobago keeper at full stretch from a free kick by his curling chip that was just wide of the upright.
Tobago, although having to settle for a few raids on the counter attack almost stole the lead just before the half, when North East keeper Marvin Phillip had to go full length to block out a Kevin Adams shot, 0-0 the score remained at the half and Tobagos coach Peter Granville would have been eyeing a Tobago upset.
The second half started with much enterprise and Kerron Phillips almost scored in the 50th minute, but his well directed header was well saved by North East keeper Marvin Phillips.
North East Guyanese striker Randolph Jerome missed a sitter when he seemed surprised after a miss kick from a Tobago defender allowed a Kendall Velox cross to land at his feet four yards out and with the goal at his mercy in the 55th.
Ten minutes later in the 65th Velox would make no mistake when he slammed home a similar miss by the Tobago defence to give his team a 1-0 lead.
In the 70th minute Anthony Wolfe almost made amends for his earlier misses, but his sliding effort was just wide of the mark. After this opportunity the match degenerated to a midfield dogfight with both teams adopting a defensive approach and neither side creating any real goal scoring opportunities.
However, in the 87th minute Collie Hercules had the prefect chance to draw Tobago level when he was put through the North East defence, but he over pushed his last touch allowing North East keeper Marvin Phillips to come off his line and claim the ball.
In the end Tobago slipped to another defeat and North East continue their post Gold Cup revival. Both teams will be looking towards Tuesday clashes with Superstar Rangers and Caledonia respectively with anxiety and expectation.

Title: North East Stars and DIRECTV Enriching the lives of our communities.
Post by: Flex on February 22, 2011, 10:58:15 AM
North East Stars & DIRECTV
...Enriching the lives of our communities.
North East Stars Press Release.

DIRECTV North East Stars will this week be taking part in the filming of a documentary which will be televised across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Rock, Paper, Scissors is just one charitable initiative carried out by DIRECTV in all of the territories in which they maintain a presence and involves the undertaking of infrastructural work to communities in need of assistance.

Victims of natural disasters such as those from the Haiti and Chile earthquakes have benefitted from this initiative in their respective countries as well.

In keeping with their common goal of enriching the lives of its surrounding communities, North East Stars, together with DIRECTV, will be carrying out this charitable project by embarking upon repairs, painting and cleaning up activities at the Senior Citizens home in Chaguanas on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday of this week.
This is very exciting for the whole club said C.E.O. Brent Sancho.

Its always great when we can assist people in the community, particularly our senior citizens who have contributed so much to the culture of Trinidad & Tobago. But to be a part of an international documentary makes the whole project more interesting. Im sure some of the guys fancy themselves as tv stars, so nows their chance!

Marketing Co-ordinator at DIRECTV, Lindsay Boodoo said Rocks, Paper, Scissors is just one part of a program known as Generation DIRECTV which in addition to community activities and relief for disaster victims, also focuses on education in schools.

Throughout the DIRECTV network internationally, our colleagues have noted the outstanding performances both on and off the field of DIRECTV North East Stars. We are very proud of our association with The Stars, so much so that our staff have all become advocates of this football club and the excellence it continually strives for.

Boodoo explained that DIRECTV views their association with North East Stars as an effective method of supporting the community.

By utilising the players and staff at North East, we are able to achieve much more. Within one year, we have worked with the club to distribute 15,000 toys at the Xmas Extravaganza, organize the Champion of Champions football tournament, raise awareness for victims of domestic violence and many other projects.

And the guys still excelled on the field of play, reaching 3 Cup finals! Absolutely remarkable.

North East Stars Operations Director, Kevin Harrison said "This is a really busy week for us as we reached our third Cup Final of the season. We will play Ma Pau in the Toyota Classic cup final on Friday."

Harrison said that filming this documentary would actually be a benefit rather than interfere with preperation for the final. "When we won the Lucozade Goal Shield all of our players worked at our "Treat Her Like A Lady" event and it really built a bond between the team.

You could see how proud they were of themselves and the team when they walked onto the pitch. I'm sure you will see the same pride on Friday. Our players are fantastic because they always want to take part in our community projects."

Sancho said that DIRECTV and North East Stars have built a strong partnership this year. "Much of our success on and off the field is due to the support of DIRECTV. Aside from the financial commitment they have made, DIRECTV staff have really got behind the club. So it will be great for the players and DIRECTV staff to work together on this programme."

North East Stars offer open trials to youngsters.
North East Stars Release.

Directv North East Stars begin their preparations for the 2011/12 Pro League season on Saturday by holding open trials for under 23 players.

The trials will take place at Larry Gomes stadium, Arima on Saturday and at the Recreation Ground in Valencia on Sunday.

Club President, Darryl Mahabir said North East Stars are keen to bring through players from across the North East. "We are known as a community club, so our first priority when offering trials is to attract exciting young talent from our region.

Our player of the season, Glenton Wolfe and his brother, national player Anthony Wolfe are from Manzanilla, and local young players should aim to follow in their footsteps. We intend to hold further trials in Toco, Mayaro, Biche and Sangre Grande."

Mahabir, who owns the Japs Fried Chicken chain of restaurants is passionate about the development of youth football.

"We all know that in football you must continually search for the next generation of players with the ultimate intention of developing them for our national team.

These open trials are crucial as it will give the opportunity for young talented players to earn a living from professional football.

North East Stars are the best supported team in the Pro League and any players making it through to the first team will become local heroes."

Mahabir also stressed that the trials were open to any player under 23 from across the country. "Although we want to give players from our community an opportunity, we are a nationwide brand and, as such, welcome young players from any part of Trinidad & Tobago.

In fact our young player of the season this year, Jeromie Williams is from Tobago and the runner up was Kaydian Gabriel from Morvant. I fully expect both of these exciting young players to be an integral part of the national squad in the future."

C.E.O.Brent Sancho said " Open trials are always exciting for the coaches. You always find at least one diamond. Its a massive opportunity for young players because its their chance to begin a career in football that could lead to national representation and the chance to earn big money overseas."

Registration for the trials on Saturday 21st May at Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima and on Sunday 22nd May at Recreation Ground, Valencia is at 8am with the trials to begin promptly at 9am. Players should walk with dark shorts, socks and shinguards and a $20 registration fee.

North East Stars impressed by players at trials
North East Stars Media

DIRECTV North East Stars held the first two of six open trials in Arima and Valencia at the weekend. The trials were open to any men under 23. Saturdays trials at Larry Gomes Stadium saw 19 hopefuls go through their paces with 7 selected to go through to the next stage. On sunday, 14 players arrived at the recreation ground in Valencia and 5 were put through to the next stage.

"Overall, we were all generally impressed by the 33 players we saw over the weekend" said team manager, ex T&T international, Kevin Jeffrey. "It takes a lot of self confidence to put yourself forward, and of course, it can be disapointing if you do not get through. Overall, 6 of the 12 players selected were under 20, and this indicates the quality of the next generation of professional footballers in Trinidad.

Aside from Jeffrey, in attendance to study the trialists were CEO, Brent Sancho, Head Coach, Shurland David, Assistant Coach, Arnold Dwarika, Physio Lester Young as well as North East players Glenton Wolfe, Akiel Guevera, National Team striker Anthony Wolfe and former U23 players Kaydion Gabriel and Jeromie Williams.

Sancho said "Its important to get a variety of opinions at this stage, so we like to include players and staff in this first round selection. With so many potential players on display, its easy to miss a player with talent. Its not all about the guy who scores the goals, we're looking for positional sense, work rate off the ball and vision. Of course, once the players are selected it will then be down to our Head Coach, Shurland David and his team to decide who gets a contract." Sancho also stressed that trialists need not be from the North East. "Obviously, we wanted to give every potential player in our community a chance to display their talents. Thats why all 6 trials will be held in the North East. But we aim to make the club a nationwide brand, so we welcome trialists from all corners of Trinidad & Tobago. Indeed, of those selected this weekend, 2 were from Tobago, and one each from Morvant and St James. But it is pleasing to see that no less than 4 players were from Valencia, one from Manzanilla and one from Arima."

Jeffrey added "We're looking forward to this weekends trials in Mayaro on Saturday and Biche on Sunday." However, Jeffrey stressed that players were being judged not just on the field, but also off the field. "North East Stars have high professional standards and those players arriving late or without the correct equipment will be judged accordingly. It is important for all trialists to recognise that they should arrive with a professional attitude."

Registration takes place at 8 am each day and players should arrive with dark shorts, socks, shinguards and $20 registration fee. There will be further open trials on Saturday 4th June at Toco and Sunday 5th June at Ojoe Rd, Sangre Grande.

Trialists to train with The Stars.
North East Stars Release.

Young players who were selected from the DIRECTV North East Stars open trials will be training alongside the senior players on Monday.

So far, 15 players aged under 23 have been chosen to attend first team training with North East, and it is expected that up to ten more hopefuls from this weekends final open trials will join them at Ojoe Rd on Monday.

Team Manager, Kevin Jeffrey said "The overall standard has been high and we've selected a number of players with potential. This weekends trials should be interesting as we have found in the past that there is usually a very good standard of player attending the final sessions."

After trials in Arima, Valencia, Biche and Mayaro, the focus this weekend turns to Toco on Saturday and Ojoe Rd, Sangre Grande on Sunday. Registration is at 8 am and players should walk with dark shorts, shin guards and $20 registration fee.

Meanwhile, CEO Brent Sancho announced that popular Jamaican striker, Sean Fraser has signed for another season with the Sangre Grande outfit.

"This is fantastic news for the club" said Sancho. "Not only is Sean very quick, and a very clinical finisher, but he's the kind of player defenders hate playing against.

With his back to goal, he can lay off or turn and shoot and when he's running at you with his pace, it takes a brave defender to risk a tackle around the box" Fraser entered into North East Stars history when he scored the goal that gave them the Lucozade Goal Shield last season.

Fraser will be looking forward to joining up with fellow striker Anthony Wolfe again this season. Wolfe rejoined North East midway through last season and the understanding between the two players should send out warning signs to other ProLeague clubs.

"We're expecting 25 goals to come from this strike partnership this season" said Sancho "Our sights are firmly set on a top two finish. Defence Force won the league with 38 goals last season, and 41 points so we must aim to score 45 goals and win 45 points to make sure we achieve our aim."

Sancho also confirmed that Wolfes brother, Glenton will again be wearing the North East colours after a successful season that saw him awarded both the Player of the Year trophy and Players Player of the Year. Other confirmed re signings include Akiel Guevera, Kadion Gabriel, Jeromie Williams and Keryn Navarro.

Sancho said "We are negotiating with a number of players and there will definately be some new faces at North East, but its great to see some of our young players developing and coming through the system"

Be Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolfes.
North East Stars Release.

Directv North East Stars' Anton & Glenton Wolfe will be a deciding factor in the Sangre Grande teams quest for trophies in the new season. Thats the verdict of North Easts' CEO, Brent Sancho.

"I can't wait for the new season to start" said Sancho. "Last season saw North East rejoin the Pro League and we hit all of the targets we aimed for on and off the field.

We got stronger in the second half of the season and part of that improvement was the signing of Anton Wolfe." The 27 year old striker joined North East for his third spell at the club from Ma Pau, where he had aleady hit the target 18 times.

"Wolfey is a real handful for defenders. I often played against him during National Team training, so I know how difficult he is to play against."

Wolfe was a member of the 2006 World Cup squad and has represented T&T on 23 occasions. "The time is right for Anton to really push on now.

He was the Pro Leagues top scorer in 2006 with 16 goals for Jabloteh, and we expect at least that many from him this season. We've ask him and fellow striker Sean Fraser for 25 goals between them, and I'm confident they will achieve this."

Sancho also stated his faith in Antons brother, Glenton Wolfe. The 29 year old defender is also in his third spell with North East Stars and last season won both the Player of the Season and the Players Player of the Season.

"To win both awards is remarkable and shows the respect he has earned from both players and staff" said Sancho. "Even though he was carrying an injury, he still put himself forward and played through the pain.

Its hard to see why Glenton has only played five times for the National team, but I'm hoping Mr Pfister will take a look at Glenton, as I'm convinced his strength and tenacity will be an asset to the national squad."

Asked about his predictions for North East Stars in the coming season, Sancho said " Of course, we have to be aiming for a top two finish. The Caribbean Club Championships and CONCACAF have to be our targets.

And we seemed to have a knack of reaching domestic finals, reaching three last season. We still have a lot of work to do on the field, but we have good coaching staff and we've spotted some great new talent in our trials.

As a club, we will continue to embark on groundbreaking community programmes and we have several exciting projects coming up. Our aim is to build the North East Stars brand into a national and Caribbean wide force that will attract players and supporters from across the country and overseas.

The Caribbean really doesn't have any big name clubs. We want DIRECTV North East Stars to be known across the region. In order for the Pro League to be stronger, we must be able to attract top Caribbean players without necesarily paying huge wages.

We have also noticed the benefits of Mr Pfisters' national team training on Akiel Guevera, Kaydion Gabriel & Jeromie Williams. They are looking sharper and more focused and this bodes well for the National Team."

Sancho feels that the T&T Pro League is at a crucial stage of its development. "Its a good league to play in. There is a lot of parity which means many matches could go either way.

This can only be a good thing for spectators. It won't take a lot for the numbers of spectators to increase, which in turn will bring more sponsors.

The Super Friday double headers were successful last season and we hope there will be other initiatives from the league this season."

Sancho pointed out that part of North Easts' success last season came from the backing of strong sponsors. "DIRECTV have been great.

They've supported us in so many ways. Even the staff are part of North Easts' Barmy Army! This year, Bernard Pantin and DIRECTV are even more involved with the club and are determined to see professional football return to Sangre Grande as soon as possible.

We also have great support from Carib and Toyota, and of course Japs Fried Chicken, without whom we could not achieve our aims. We're still looking for more sponsors as we have lots to achieve with our community programmes.

Both North East Stars and our sponsors are immensley proud of the work we have done, not just in the North East, but across the country."

Footballers plan to stamp out crime.
North East Stars Release.

Sangre Grande based Pro League football club, DIRECTV North East Stars, have announced their latest community project which is aimed at helping to keep children busy during the school holidays.

The North East based team are introducing a fun educational project which will introduce stamp collecting to 9 - 11 year old children as well as encouraging them to write to penpals across the world.

Many adults can recall countless hours spent with their stamp collections as children, but the hobby appears to have died out in Trinidad & Tobago. "We wanted to offer an alternative to our annual summer football camps" said Operations Director, Kevin Harrison. "Not every child is sport minded so we decided we would offer something interesting and fun, that is also educational"

Harrison said that one of the attractions of stamp collecting as an educational tool is that children actually want to learn more. "If a child has a stamp that says "Suomi" he naturally wants to know which country issued the stamp. Once the child is shown that "Suomi" means Finland, he will remember this.

You can then engage the child in a conversation about Finland, where it can be found on a map, climate etc. While we are not educational experts, we do have an ex teacher, who has voluntered to assist us. Necia Holzman taught at several schools including QRC before moving to USA.

Necia, better remembered as Miss Ali by her students, returned to T&T because she wanted to contribute in a positive way to help young people develop"

North East Stars C.E.O. Brent Sancho said" Our players and staff pass on the benefits of their football experience to youngsters through our coaching schools and soccer camps, but they have so much more to offer.

For instance, I knew the answer to the "Suomi" question, as I actually played in Finland! We have players who played in countries like Lebanon, Iceland, China, Brazil, USA, Scotland. This is a perfect opportunity to talk to children about life in other countries."

The project will encourage children to write to penpals overseas to swap stamps with. "We will also help the children think of other sources of stamps, for instance, writing to embassies and foreign businesses in Trinidad & Tobago." said Harrison. "Imagine how exciting it would be for a child in Sangre Grande to receive a letter from Japan?" Harrison continued "Letter writing has become a lost art form with the advent of email.

However, I believe that writing letters will once again become a preferred method of communication. Imagine applying for a job via email. How many emails go unopened? People will always open a letter. Therefore, if you want to ensure your resume is read, you should send it by post.

We hope our project will reinforce the benefits, and fun, in letter writing, and, of course, it will help to improve spelling and grammer."

The "Stamp Camps" are scheduled to take place on Mondays in Sangre Grande throughout July starting on July 11th at the Sangre Grande Civic Centre.

Darryl Mahabir, owner of the Japs Fried Chicken restaurant chain said "We are delighted to get behind this project. We have always supported North East Stars in their football and community work, but this is particularly special to us at Japs. Education is so important, but its also important to keep children off the streets through the holidays. This project combines both."

Some sponsors were so impressed by the scheme, they have offered to provide a new computer and other prizes for a stamp based competition amongst schools in the North East. The club are now awaiting approval from the Minister for Education to begin the competition in September.

Harrison said that attendance at the Stamp Camps would be free of charge, but there would be an initial $20 registration fee, and he is now looking to source sponsors to provide some snacks and drinks for the participants. "The project is fairly inexpensive. I wrote to stamp dealers across the world asking them to donate stamps and the response has been fantastic. In most cases, the only cost has been shipping to T&T.

We still need to raise a little more money to purchase some items, but I'm confident that sponsors will come forward for such a positive community programme. We also hope that people will contact us to donate stamps, or even their old stamp collections"

Sancho said "One of the best ways of keeping children out of trouble in the school holidays is to keep them busy. We know how hard it is for parents when they have to work and they want a safe environment for their children. We hope, in some small way, that this project will help to reduce the number of children involved in mischief in the North East."

Stars Deliver Cheer to North East School
North East Stars Media

DIRECTV North East Stars staff paid a visit to Rampanalgas R.C. School along Toco Rd to treat the children to some Japs Fried Chicken. Operations Director, Kevin Harrison and Events Coordinator Khaty Martin-Jones requested  the tasty treat from Japs owner Darryl Mahabir. "Much of our community work is based around Sangre Grande" said Harrison "But we recognise that its important for us to reach out to the whole North Eastern community." Martin-Jones said "We felt that if we were going half way to Toco, we should at least bring something that perhaps the children don't get very often. We approached Mr Mahabir to ask if he would assist, and as always, Japs contribution was fantastic."

Harrison continued " We spent some time talking with the Principal, Nina Ali, who told us of some of the problems she has had to overcome since taking over two years ago. We were impressed with her enthusiasm and belief in her staff and we witnessed the pleasant and loving atmosphere that surrounds the school." The school currently only has a total of 35 pupils, but it is hoped that the number will increase as word spreads about the good work being done by Miss Ali and her staff.

"Spending time talking to the children, I could see they were polite and well behaved. I spoke to them about the countries that North East Stars players had played in, such as Brazil, Finland, China etc and also about my home country, England. The children were very attentive and asked interesting questions, although I'm sure they were distracted by the smell of Japs coming from the kitchen!"

Martin-Jones said " Its a beautiful little school, and the teachers there are so dedicated. Kevin & I were both made to feel very welcome. We told Miss Ali about our school community project introducing children to stamp collecting and writing to pen pals overseas. Miss Ali was very complementary about the project, so we decided to return to the school next week to start a similar project."

Harrison said " We now plan to create closer ties with the school, starting with our Write On! campaign. As usual, we have to thank Japs Fried Chicken, one of our main sponsors, for their generosity. Each child, staff member and even the security guard received a two piece meal and a drink. The Japs people even included pots of condiments! I just hope the children won't be disappointed when we arrive without more Japs next week!" Japs Fried Chicken also donated sets of exercise books, pencils & rulers for all of the children.

Mahabir said " We are always keen to support North East Stars community projects, especially when they involve children. Kevin & Khaty are always so enthusiastic about their projects, so its hard to say no to them!"

Martin-Jones said that the club believes working with children is a priority." Aside from our desire to uncover our next generation of footballers and supporters, we believe that working with pre teenage children can help to keep them on the right path and away from areas that can lead them into trouble. We already run a weekly coaching school and we will be running a Summer Football Camp  as well as a Stamp Camp in July. Then in September we will be visiting selected schools to deliver the Write On! campaign. It will be fantastic to link children in the North East with pen pals all over the world."

Harrison said that they are still looking for sponsors for the Write On! campaign. "We have obtained most of the items we need and have had a great response from companies like Toyota, Tropical Shipping and Malta Carib, but we still need to source some ring binders to make stamp albums. We are also appealing to the public to send us their used stamps, old stamp collections and names of children overseas who would like pen pals from Trinidad."

Anyone who can assist should contact Harrison on 374 5992 or email kh.northeaststars@gmail.com

North East drew 0-0 with Defence Force in a "friendly" tonite. However, it was nowhere near friendly! Both teams gave 100% and DF in particular were throwing very heavy tackles. Think a couple of DF players got yellows. Watching this, you wouldn't think the season is still 6 weeks away. Both teams look ready to go now, except for hitting the net ! DF definately missed Josling & Carter. NE also looked weak up front, despite playing Sean Fraser and Akiel Guevera as attacking mids with Jaggys brother as lone striker. Later, Anton Wolfe took the lone striker role, but for both teams the supply to strikers was poor. Of course, much of this could be down to strong defence and midfield!

North Easts' next test is against Joe Public on Saturday.

North East lost 3-1 today vs Joe Public. First half was tight with NE having more opportunities to score. NE went 1-0 up, but JP's formation changes worked well and they finished stronger. Sad thing was the match was at Ato Boldon Stadium, but on the back field as Ministry of Health used the stadium for a kids fun day. Not sure if there was a booking foul up, but I'm pretty sure both teams expected to play in the stadium.

Otto Pfister was there and seemed surprised that even a Pro team friendly would be played on such a poor pitch and also that there were no spectators. I think he's realising that Pro football in T&T is not quite the same as in other countries!

North East get the appliance of science
North East Stars Media

DIRECTV North East Stars continued their pre season preparation this week by subjecting their players to a wide battery of testing to establish their fitness and highlight areas requiring improvement.

Former senior mens national team trainer, Gregory Searles conducted the 5 hour session aided by trainers from his Body Mechanics team.  Searle, a strength and conditioning coach who specialises in corrective exercises and is also a licensed massage therapist and a movement skills coach, said "  The aim of the testing on Saturday was to functionally screen a number of things. We looked at flexibility as well as static and transitional postural imbalances to see how much this would impact on their movement efficiency."

Searle, is a graduate of the Athlete's Performance 4 phase system (the world renowned performance education providers), and he is currently doing his Masters of Science in Human Movement specializing in Performance. He continued " We looked at core strength, bi-lateral and uni-lateral power for explosive ability. Acceleration, absolute speed, agility and aerobic/anaerobic capacity completed the battery of tests. It is very important to get this data in order to properly plan the program for these athletes."

Stars C.E.O. Brent Sancho said " This is something that I and Kevin Jefferey both saw in USA, and in England. This is the starting point of every clubs pre season training. Its not cheap, and respect must go to our President, Darryl Mahabir for recognising the importance of a constructed pre season training regime based on acquired indepth information to determine individual needs." Sancho added that the club is also focusing on the importance of diet and nutrition. "The players' body composition was also tested in an effort to plan meals and supplementation based on their results. As professionals, the players must be shown the importance of a profession lifestyle away from the training pitch."

North Easts' Operations Director, Kevin Harrison said "This really shows the level of professionalism being invoked at the club. This type of testing is essential to develop the maximum potential of footballers by identifying areas requiring improvement. This is common practice at English clubs from Premiership to League 2 and I am delighted that the club recognises the importance of this kind of intense personal development. It shows how serious we are about competing at the highest level and our sights are firmly set on qualifying for CONCACAF via the Caribbean Cup" Harrison also explained that the club would be supplying nutritional supplements to the players. "Ideally, we would like to issue each player with a diet together with the required foods, and I am currently contacting stores and suppliers to enter into a partnership with the club as official nutritional suppliers to North East Stars"

Searles, who's Body Mechanics team work with people requiring general fitness improvement as well as professional sportspeople  added " I am very pleased to see DIRECTV North East Stars willing to make a commitment to developing their program. So far it has been a pleasure to work with the staff and the footballers. I am very impressed with the maturity of the players and their willingness to work no matter how insanely intense it gets."

Sancho, a former national team world cup player said " Speaking from experience, I know this level of training is very intensive and very tough, but the rewards and improvements give a player added confidence and their performance increases noticeably. One of the areas I'm really looking for improvement is explosive acceleration. We have a number of pacey players but they need to increase speed over the first five yards. This is one area where Gregory's expertise is invaluable."

Defensive midfielder, Marc Leslie said " We're all a little daunted by the programme over the next 2 months, but we know we will be at our absolute peak of fitness for our first game. Mr Searles certainly knows his stuff and, together with the North East coaching staff, will ensure this is the best prepared North East Stars squad we've ever had. I'm looking forward to improving my personal fitness and benefiting from the nutritional advice."

DIRECTV North East Stars will once again be launching their Summer Football Camp on Monday at Damerie Hill Grounds, Sangre Grande. The camp, which enjoyed great success last summer introduces children to the North East Stars training school which runs every weekend throughout the year. The camp, sponsored by Malta Carib will run from Monday to Friday from 18th July to 29th July. Registration is $250 and includes a North East Stars training school uniform, football and water bottle.

CEO Brent Sancho said "This camp provides an entry into the North East Stars organisation, and is an important scouting opportunity. Last year, many of the children attending went on to join the training school and some were selected for our academy programme and now play in our youth teams." Sancho also pointed out that the camp provides parents with a secure facility to keep children active. "We know its difficult for working parents who worry about their children becoming involved in unsavoury activity. The camp provides a structured, disciplined environment in which they can have fun."

North Easts events co ordinator, Khaty Martin-Jones said "Its a great opportunity for children to receive coaching from professional coaches and players. Arnold Dwarika, for instance, was Caribbean Footballer of the Year, so children will benefit from spending time with players and coaches who have played all over the world."

Jones went on to point out that the camp is not all about football. "We try to bring to the children various core values during the two weeks. Good manners and politeness are encouraged, while we also try to instill pride in their community and develop personal self belief and ambition. We also have lots of fun!"

Children should arrive on Monday 18th July to register at 8.30 a.m. and the daily camps will run until 1 p.m. each day.

North East Stars President, Darryl Mahabir said "North East Stars are privileged to be the sole professional football team representing the whole North East Region. Our focus is always on serving the community, and we see our Summer Camp as an important vehicle to encourage children to regularly take part in sport and live an active, healthy lifestyle." Mahabir went on to thank the clubs sponsors for their support "Our partners make this possible and the commitment, particularly of Malta Carib over the last year, has contributed greatly to the healthy lifestyle of over 100 local children. Malta Carib has truly immersed its brand into the Sangre Grande community and this can only be a positive for both the brand and the children of the North East Region."

N/East players fitness analysed

Wednesday, July 20 2011

GREGORY SEALE, who recently served as trainer of the Trinidad and Tobago football squad under coach Russell Latapy, and his Body Mechanics team recently conducted a five-hour session which featured an array of testing to determine the fitness levels of the North East Stars footballers.

Seale is a strength and conditioning coach who specialises in corrective exercises, but is also a licensed massage therapist and a movement skills coach.

Erm, you are definately some kind of hibernating creature as you seem to have missed 2010 altogether.

NE won Lucozade Shield, runners up in FA Trophy and Toyota classic (on pens)

I don't think Sancho is particularly pretty, but he does currently have $200,000 of Jacks money and so do the other 12, and the lawyers have been paid. (Message to Jack: The boys are enjoying your money and don't forget you will be giving them a lot more soon, so its a good idea to get your boy Horner some spectacles as he clearly can't read newspapers)

You may be correct about JP. They're a nice side with good staff. However, I think the surprise you're referring to is that they will no longer have a home ground unless they begin paying rent like every other club. Chuck Blazer says he has no interest in sponsoring Joe Public, so get off my ground or pay.

Of course I'm bragging. Who else appeared in more cup finals this year? And teams like Joe Public, DF, WC, Ma Pau didn't take a year out and have to rebuild from scratch. In any country in the world, that is a remarkable feat.

As you are well aware, NE finished 7th equal on points with Jab who finished 6th on goal difference. Not an amazing position, but it was NE stated intention to win one cup and finish in the top 6. They were also promised assistance with the field in Grande, but after the change in govt, this was withdrawn, so they didn't play a single home game. I am convinced they would have won at least 4 more points with home advantage. And, according to the Pro League, they still managed to be the best supported team.

I feel they come close enough.

Japs, N/East Stars sponsor cricket gear

By Walter Alibey Tuesday, August 2 2011

PROFESSIONAL Football outfit North East Stars and chicken experts Japs Fried Chicken combined recently to bring some much needed help to the children of Rio Claro Asja Muslim School.

The school was the beneficiary of cricket equipment as well as critical advice on setting goals for themselves by players from North East Stars.

The decision to assist the school came from talks between North East striker Anthony Wolfe and his brother Fitzroy who is a manager at the fast food outlet in Rio Claro.

The idea also coincided with the clubs intention to roll into communities to spread the awareness of the club and give back to the people who have supported them.

In a release yesterday Wolfe (Fitzroy) said I have been a manager at Japs for the past two-and-a-half years and I have always wanted to do something to help youngsters improve their sporting skills.

Sports is often the only way out for some children and I wanted to help in some way.

Fitzroy was quick to clarify his decision to distribute cricket equipment and not football ones considering his brother represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Asja is a strong cricketing school and as such equipment for this was more in demand.

The other Wolfe (Anthony) said, however, that he is keen on promoting any sport.

Apart from promoting team work and enhancing individual skills and fitness, it is important to encourage youngsters to be involved in disciplined, supervised activities rather than roaming the streets without dreams and ambition.

The presentation was made to the principal of Asja Abzal Abdool and Yanik Garcia, a promising cricketer.

Garcia was also given a special award for his contribution to the school in the field of cricket.

Meanwhile Darryl Mahabir, owner of Japs Fried Chicken, and president of North East Stars said his club will embark on a programme that will take them to the different communities this season.

Rio Claro is a Japs town and we are not only proud to be supported by the community but we feel it is our duty to submerge ourselves into the fabric of the community. Projects like this one makes me immensely proud. I think both Japs and North East Stars believe in supporting communities.

Mahabir gave the assurance that both North East Stars and Japs will work closely this year to provide customers with promotions such as match-day tickets and replica jerseys among others.

Meanwhile the club is preparing for the 2011 season and Anthony said they are expecting a really good season.

They are hoping to be the club to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Caribbean and Concacaf Club Championships.

The Shurland David-coached team has already intensified their training and are rumoured to have a few surprise recruits on their roster this year.

North East Stars target improved season

Monday, August 8 2011 Newsday

MEMBERS OF the North East Stars football team are eyeing an improved Pro League campaign, as the 2011-2012 season kicks off on August 19.

North East Stars, who returned to the Pro League fold last season, after a year hiatus, won the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield but were the runners-up in the FA Trophy and Toyota Classic Finals. In the League however, they finished seventh in the 10-team contest.

Striker Anthony Wolfe, in a Pro League website article, contented, last season is last season, and I dont like to dwell too much on spilled milk.

We didnt do too well reaching three finals and just winning one, continued the Trinidad and Tobago utility player. But this season we are coming out hard against all teams, playing to the best of our ability and making sure that we bring trophies back to Sangre Grande and our sponsors. We are taking every team as big teams especially in the Cup competitions. I was really disappointed when we played Ma Pau a team Ive been with before and we lost on penalty kicks when I missed my kick. Those are things that we are trying to polish up on, added Wolfe.

Team coach Shurland David noted, the guys are enthusiastic and motivated and its easy for me to do my work.

We started off bad last season and we are determined to have a better start this season, continued the ex-national defender. Once we have a better start we are going to finish very high. Im looking at first two or three, even the top at the League because we must always strive for the best.

North East Stars backed up ambitions with the signings of Jamaican goalkeeper Leon Gordon from Tivoli Gardens, former Caledonia AIA defender Ishmael Daniel, midfielder Stephan Stoute from WASA FC and former Defence Force youth striker Kevin Jagdeosingh, who is the younger brother of former Stars player and current Rochester Rhinos forward Kendall Jagdeosingh.

Wolfe pointed out, the preparations have been coming along smoothly.

We probably have one or two new players still to come in. And what we have been doing is more strength work (with trainer Gregory Seales) to get us 100 percent fit, he added.

North East clip Eagles wings.
North East Stars Release.

Directv North East Stars overcame a good test againt Superleague outfit Eagles United on Saturday to stake their claim for the 2012 Pro League title, due to commence in 2 weeks time.

The Sangre Grande based club arrived with a high level of preperation and determination and despite not yet having played a competetive match, surprised the Chaguanas based Eagles with their intensity direct from kick off. It took only 2 minutes for Kevaughan Connell to head home a Stern John flick from a corner kick. And the Stars lead was doubled after 25 mins when Kevin Jagdeosingh converted another Stern John assist.

Eagles United continued with a good solid performance, but were unable to convert their chances on a well prepared Woodford Lodge surface. The second half saw more North East chances, with Akiel Guevera smashing a shot against an upright, and a sublime Stern John lob was pushed onto the post by the Eagles keeper, after some superb control by John, who collected the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the box, surrounded by Eagles defenders.

Indeed, John's performance was good news for National Coach, Otto Pfister, with many of the Stars best chances eminating from the National teams all time highest goalscorer.  Late in the game saw the best move of the match when Stephen Cruickshanks beautiful first touch found John who played a slide rule one-two into the path of the sprinting Cruickshank, who converted with confidence, only to be ruled offside. Cruickshank, too, will be a welcome sight to Mr Pfister after his two year self-imposed hiatus from football.

Although the game descended into the usual friendly format of rolling substitutions and realigned formations, the game was played at a good pace with many competetive tackles and with both teams eager to prove points. Indeed, Eagles next opposition will need to beware, as they raised their game to new levels against the Stars and will carry that mentality into their next match.

North East Stars Head Coach, Shurland David said "Our preseason build up saw us aim for 13th of August as our final game before the commencement of the Pro League on the 19th August. However, as we know, the date has been pushed back until the 26th. But what we saw today was our strongest team, with the exception of 4 missing players."

Anthony Wolfe, Gary Glasgow and Leon Gordon were left out due to slight injury concerns, while Seon Powers was excused to attend a family emergency. "I was delighted by the teams performance tonight" said David "We are ready, the players know what is expected of them by management and supporters. Their Road to Brazil starts right here"

Indeed, 2014 is on the minds of everyone at North East Stars. President, Daryll Mahabir said "This is the best prepared North East Stars team I've ever seen. Its not just their fitness, but their agility, pace and upper body strength. Shurland has done a fantastic job and I believe we can achieve our target of Pro League champions this season." But Mahabir also has another target.

"I want at least 5 North East players on the National squad. We have a duty to provide Mr Pfister with the raw materiels to do his job, and I am determined that we will not shirk that responsibility. Yes, we need some overseas players, you can never underestimate the experience gleaned from football in the worlds great leagues, but we also need a strong local contingent to promote local football."

Former WC defender Brent Sancho said "The players have really worked hard in preseason, and the preperation shows. I am delighted to see how well Stephen Cruickshank is playing. He's missed a lot of football, but I was determined to bring him to North East. I played against him in the States and have always admired him" said the North East CEO.

"He adds a new dimension and I expect him to be knocking on Mr Pfisters door to add to his 4 senior caps" Sancho also commented on the performance of Kevaughan Connell "Kevaughan is simply the most exciting left back in Trinidad" said Sancho. "When he collects the ball going forward, you always feel he will make something happen. As a former striker, he can run with the ball, cut inside and unleash a shot from distance, or use his pace to hit the base line and cross into the box. He's definately one for Mr Pfister to watch."

Director of Football, Kevin Jeffery said the players levels of fitness are extremely high. "Players like Marc Leslie say they have never begun a season this well prepared. Thanks to fitness coach, Gregory Seale, the squads beep test performances are better than the 2006 World Cup squads.

This means that the players can achieve more without forcing themselves into positions. Everything is achieved at a higher pace with greater ease. As a player, once you feel this fit, your confidence soars and everything from your first touch to finishing comes easier. Our new players such as Ishmael Daniel, Stephen Cruickshank, Seon Powers and Jaggy (Kevin Jagdeosingh) have slotted in nicely, and of course, its great to have Stern training with us. His experience is a priceless addition to the team."

Coach David said North East will be playing a couple of more friendly matches before their opening Pro League match against Quenns Park F.C. on Saturday 27th August at Hasely Crawford Stadium. He said the 6pm kick off is perfect for North East supporters. "We are hoping for a big crowd, even though its a long trip for our Grande based supporters. It will be the first game for the new Terry Fenwick outfit, so interest will be high."

North East Stars will be calling on their fans in the West, East and Central to ensure they continue the Stars reputation as the Pro Leagues best supported club. And there may still be some further surprises in the teams line up. "We are still talking to several overseas players, as we will always look to strengthen the squad" said David.

DIRECTV North East Stars: Andrew Durant (GK), Charles Pollard, Glenton Wolfe, Marc Leslie, Kevaughan Connell, Kendall Velox, Keryn Navarro, Kevin Jagdeosingh, Kaydion Gabriel, Stern John, Akiel Guevera.

Subs used: Jeromie Williams, Stephen Cruickshank, Ishmael Daniel.

Damn, Mr Horner, yuh right.

That was my big surprise, now you guys have to live without Joe Public, we are taking a break from the league for a possible 2 years or push our Super League team for promotion.

You guys are worried about Jack Warner when you should really be more worried about Dexter Skeene.

Joe Public is yet to receive money own to them by the Pro League.

You tell me what benefits Joe Public have for its participate in the Pro League.

The T&T Pro League is a BUSS !

They can't get their house in order.

Not to mention the fixtures, another story.

Next week the league begins and yet they are scrambling to revise a new fixture after our withdrawal.

You get results from other Pro League games 2 days after.

There are no stats on games, no line ups, no yellow, no red, nothing on may games or on a consistent basis.

They are not willing to cooperate with other ideas.

I'll give North East Stars two more season.

I am sure Jack Warner would have done a better job.

You guys call Jack a dictator, maybe you need to look at Skeene.

T&T needs Jack, becuase Jack is very well connected, dont read the news to much, its a political game what they want you to see.

Take a page out of my good friend Anil Roberts book, he can play.

Jack will raise again !!!!!

The official North East Stars independent supporters association will make their debut at tonites First Citizens Cup clash vs W.Connection at Hasely Crawford Stadium. The group, who chose the name Estrellas, which is Spanish for Stars, will number between 75-100 supporters, mostly from Sangre Grande and Arima. Matchday package is $100 which includes match entry, transport, exclusive supporters T shirt plus some give aways. They will also bring the North East Stars mascot, Stompy The Starman, complete in his superhero uniform!

Stars will also debut their new home uniform at the game and hope to be selling replica jerseys for $250 from early October.

Stars attempted to register Kendall Jagdeosingh and Brent Sancho in time for tonites game, who are both free agents, but the registration was not permitted by the Pro League.

Good work by the supporters but one TTPL problem is obvious. Home match in the HCS? Please. And to be fair to the league, they didn't just deny new registrations. The TTFF registration deadline expired on 9 September. The new registration period will begin in late November.

MLS won't sign new players until end of November/early December, so Jaggy could play here for a few months and retain his match fitness.

True, but at this time rules are being bent....look at DF & Police...they should really forfeit points. Both players are free agents and they could join British and European clubs at any time, so why not ProLeague?

Any of you guys overseas can help with this??

"We are also appealing to the public to send us their used stamps, old stamp collections and names of children overseas who would like pen pals from Trinidad."

Anyone who can assist should contact Harrison on 374 5992 or email kh.northeaststars@gmail.com"

I sent Mr Harrison an email based on the community projects you guys are involved in. If you in contact with him you can let him to respond to the email I sent him yesterday.

North East Stars eager for transfer window
ttproleague.com

An avalanche of signings is expected from Sangre Grande based club DIRECTV North East Stars when the transfer window opens at the end of November.

According to a press release by the club, Brazilian head coach Emerson Alcantara has already identified players both local and foreign.

"There are several local players I would like to bring to the club," said Alacantra. "I don't understand why you can't sign players who are free agents at any stage of the season. This is something that must be unique to the Pro League."

The release went on to add; Only last week, English Premiership side, Everton signed James McFadden who was a free agent.

"We have been paying players to train with us, but can't put them into a match until December. This is restricting the ability of footballers to earn a living. You wouldn't tell an out of work builder that he can only start a new contract at certain times of the year."

"The talent in the Pro League is much higher than people, or even the press seems to recognize," said Alcantara, who spent time as a player in Portugal.

"There are some stunning young players coming through and this looks good for Trinidad & Tobago's 2018 World Cup campaign. I have players like Jeromie Williams and Kaydion Gabriel who have made great contributions to the Olympic squad. But I would like to bring over some established players from Brazil and Latin America to stimulate further development in our local players. I have seen the effect that Stern John has had on the education of our younger players. Its not that overseas players are better than ours, but they bring something new to our game which can only benefit our youngsters."

North East Stars' next Pro League game is on Friday 18th November, when the Sangre Grande club takes on St. Anns Rangers at the Larry Gomes Stadium. Both teams have 4 points from 4 games and a win from either side will see them climb to 3rd place in the Pro League, 2 points behind second placed W Connection.

"No team is assured of a win in the league this season" said Stars CEO Brent Sancho. "Apart from T&TEC, who are having a fantastic start to the season, every team is taking points from each other. Its going to be an interesting, exciting season, and the introduction of Defence Force and Police FC after the curfew will add a new and exciting dimension to the Pro League."

Title: Crimewatch slammed at North East Stars "Treat Her Like A Lady" event
Post by: Football supporter on November 16, 2011, 07:10:05 AM
DIRECTV North East Stars treated volunteers from the Rape Crisis Society to a gala evening at the Hilton Hotel last Wednesday in the second edition of its Treat Her Like a Lady annual event developed by the club to highlight various issues affecting women in Trinidad & Tobago.

Last years event at the Carlton Savannah hotel helped to raise awareness of victims of domestic violence while this year the club used the event to show appreciation for the work carried out by the Rape Crisis Society.

With an audience of over 75 invited women, Stars Operations Director Kevin Harrison used the opportunity to slam the broadcasting by Ian Alleyne on his Crimewatch television programme of a video showing the rape of a 13 year old girl.

Harrison said, "Although we are all pleased to see that an arrest has been made in this case thanks to the Crimewatch programme, the long term damage to the victim is yet to be measured. There was no need to show this poor girls face as she was being raped, certainly not at 6pm."

Wednesdays event was mainly light hearted, with respect for women being the theme.

Guests were escorted by the arms of North East players from the hotel entrance through to the Savannah Terrace, where other footballers from the Sangre Grande club served refreshments and canapes and waited at tables.

In his regular starting position for the event, CEO Brent Sancho manned the grill, serving up his trademark barbeque chicken, much to the delight of the all woman audience.

"It looks like I have a regular spot here," laughed Sancho, a former World Cup footballer.

"This event is very important to the players and staff of North East Stars. Football is so very often viewed as a male orientated sport, yet I would guess we have more female supporters than male.

As sportsmen, we have the responsibility of being role models and we take this very seriously at North East. We want to set positive examples in our community."

Sancho, who has a degree in psychology, said believes that many men do not understand the trauma associated with rape.

"Unlike most crimes, a victim of rape continues to be effected by this brutal crime for the rest of their lives. The fear may subside, but its always there. We must do more to support and protect these victims. I believe Mr. Alleyne made a massive error of judgement by broadcasting the face of that poor girl. The laws must be tightened up so that victims identities can be protected, and those that refuse to adhere to these laws must be punished severely. We trust our media to act responsibly in the interests of natural justice. Clearly that trust has been abused."

Although Sancho acknowledged Alleynes apology, he felt that it was not enough.

"Ian Alleyne appeared to show no remorse. In fact he came across as very indignant, and anybody should dare criticise him. I don't believe he understands the possible repercussions of his actions for that young girl. Whether or not the victim and her mother gave permission to Alleyne to show the video, is immaterial. Unless they received independent guidance and advice from an organisation such as the Rape Crisis Society, Alleyne should not have even considered revealing the victims identity."

President of the Rape Crisis Society, which offers support and counselling to both male and female victims of rape and sexual abuse, Mrs. Rosalyn Ali, said she was overwhelmed by the event.

"The footballers have been amazing," she said. "They are perfect gentlemen and worked hard throughout the evening to make us all feel very special. This is a fantastic example to the men of Trinidad & Tobago."

"As usual, our sponsors(Carib Brewery, Toyota Trinidad, Japs Fried Chicken, Cher-Mere, DIRECTV, S.M. Jaleel, Sunshine Snacks, Fine Choice and Bliss) have been fantastic, said Harrison.

It is notable that so many big companies in Trinidad & Tobago are only interested in sponsoring fetes and concerts, when events like this go unsupported. Corporate Trinidad really has to embrace the true concept of corporate social responsibility.

"Special thanks have to go to Mr. Ali Khan and the staff of the Hilton Hotel. Their generosity and support has been amazing. The staff has been incredibly supportive and professional, even though they have had to stand back and watch with horror as our players waited on the tables. However, I think they were impressed with the lads performance and joined in the applause for the players enthusiastically."
Sancho said that despite these difficult economic times, businesses were beginning to see the value in football sponsorship.

"I think the work we're doing at North East is gradually changing the attitudes of corporate T&T. We can become an important part of a company's CSR programme, and this can be done relatively cheaply and effectively. We have over 30 willing workers and the ability and organisation to produce effective and successful projects."

Sancho also pointed out that sports sponsorship is very cost effective.

"I believe companies can still benefit from tax relief of 150% on sports sponsorship and I find it difficult to understand why big business isn't getting more behind football in T&T."

Harrison added that this time of the year is the busiest off the field for the Sangre Grande based club with three massive annual events.

We launch our Champion of Champions invitational football tournament this week, with the final taking place on New Years Day. In mid December we host our annual Christmas Tree event at Ojoe Road Recreation Ground which will see 1500 children receive toys from Father Christmas as well as food, snacks and drinks, face painting, bouncy castles and entertainment. Then on the evening of January 1st, we will be launching Carnival season in Sangre Grande with our annual Soccer Fete, which will feature the biggest and best cast of soca artists ever assembled in the North East."

Treat her like a lady
By Lorraine Waldropt  Express

A gala evening was enjoyed by all the ladies in attendance recently, as the DIRECTV North East Stars Football Club unveiled the second installment of "Treat her Like A Lady", an annual event developed by the local Pro-League Football Club to highlight various issues affecting women in Trinidad and Tobago.

Last year's event at the Carlton Savannah Hotel raised awareness of victims of domestic violence but this year the Sangre Grande-based Club steered by former soca warrior, Brent Sancho, targeted the Rape Crisis Society.

"This event was used to not only raise funds for the Rape Crisis Society through an auction but show appreciation for the work conducted by the dedicated members of the Society throughout the years. Rape is a crucial issue in the world and awareness must be heightened in order for victims to get the help they need to get back on their feet," said Kevin Harrison, North East Stars' Operations Director.

He and his players wined and dined the members of the Rape Crisis Society and other specially invited guests with gourmet refreshments and signature "Sancho" barbecued chicken cooked and served by the master chef himself. "The Rape Crisis Society really appreciates the effort by the North East Stars Football Team to raise the awareness on rape in Trinidad and Tobago. We were happy for the visibility the event afforded us and we hope that people become more sensitised to the issue," declared, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Rape Crisis Society, Roslyn Ali. She also reiterated the fact that rape is not gender specific and that the Society offers support and counselling to both male and female victims of rape and sexual abuse,

"This event is very important to the players and staff of North East Stars. Football is so very often viewed as a male orientated sport, yet I would guess we have more female supporters than male. As sportsmen, we have the responsibility of being role models and we take this very seriously at North East. We want to set positive examples in our community," avowed Sancho, who holds a Bachelor's degree in psychology.

"The men of North East Stars really know how to treat women with respect and as queens. I truly enjoyed this evening and it was indeed a much needed break from my busy schedule. I commend them for their charitable spirit and I hope to attend the event next year," stated Beverly, who attended the event for the first time. She and the other attendees did indeed have a great evening and they have vowed to the support next year's tourney hopefully at the same venue!

For further information on the Rape Crisis Society contact 622-1079 or 657-5355 or log on to www.rapecrisistt.org.

Title: North East Stars/AC Port of Spain Thread
Post by: andre samuel on December 06, 2011, 08:13:30 AM
Not sure if this will be merged, but i think it deserves a separate thread.

I have been hearing alot about this club so Stern's latest outburst doesnt surprise me.  What is really taking place in our ProLeague??

Let me start with Sancho.  He is a good guy, but he doesnt know when to talk and when to stay quiet.  He goes on talking about local coaches blah blah blah, but then out of the blue, North East hires an Unknown Brazilian to run their side.

Doesnt make sense!!  Even Kevin Jeffrey (in his presentation at the National Consultation) blatantly said that their coach has no right coaching North East Stars.

I saw someone talking about how this sort of "bad press" affects future sponsorship, but do u think a sponsor wouldnt want to know what is taking place at the club he is thinking about investing in? Isnt that the sponsor's right??

How many of you knew that Darryl Roberts was training with North East Stars when he came back from Holland with a view of signing with them and he was told that there is no training kit for him and that he should use whatever he has.

Stern spoke both about the situation @ North East as well as the TTFF, so why everybody feeling sorry for North East and nobody coming to the "defence" of the TTFF.  Why no one saying that the TTFF dirty linen shouldnt be in the public.

Why was Otto praise for calling a spade a spade in the interview after the Barbados game? And now Stern lacks PR skills?

As far as i know, the club that takes care of its players the best is W Connection.

As i said before, i like Sancho, but a man who has been through so much as a player should be more in tune with the player's needs as an administrator........but then again, Errol McCloud is the Minister of Labour.........

ah love it!!

There were several players from USA at North East who wanted to maintain their fitness and be "attached" to a local club so that Pfister would select them. These players couldn't sign because the ProLeague prevents signing of free agents outside the transfer window. Now that there is no National Team some of them have left. Others will stay on short term contracts.

I'm not sure what some of these guys expected, but training with North East & using the facilities free of charge with no commitment to the club, I feel was a great gesture by the club to assist the National Team.

Of course, maybe North East should have paid for them to stay at the Hyatt, hired them a Lexus and sent them to Peter Elias for a new wardrobe. After all, I'm sure T&TEC would have done that for them. ::)

It would have been nice for those players to publicly thank the club. It would also have been a good gesture for Pfister to recognise North Easts commitment to his preparation.

Instead, as usual, no one appreciates, yet are quick to criticise. But in the small world of football, people should remember that memories are long, and you may feel comfortable throwing criticism now, but once you burn your bridges, theres no going back.

Maybe North East isn't as professional as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea. But on the "shoestring" budget they operate with, they aspire to greater levels of professionalism. They're not winning cups or topping the league, but then, it takes time to build a philosophy that players, staff and supporters can buy into.

So this week is bash North East Stars week. Thats cool, because they've been getting praise for the last year and a half, so its to be expected. When you're constantly in the news, you will attract haters.

But for those who really care about developing football in T&T, keep watching.

I know it takes time to build a philosophy that players, staff and supporters can buy into but North East Stars have been in existence for about 10 years and they have one trophy to their name.

Now if T&TEC win silverware this season what will you say then ?

How is Stars developing football in T&T ? they do not have a good youth program and they have alot of old players and foreign players on their senior team to.

I am not against North East Stars, but maybe something is wrong in the administration part ?

If they had invest in the youths since they came on board I am sure they would be benefitting all now.

Facts?

The TTFF have a track record of screwing players and turning a blind eye to the community... Stern is not the only footballer to criticize the TTFF, so we have support/substantiation for what he says about them.  Their list of missteps and flat out misdeeds are well documented.  In the case of NE Stars it's the exact opposite... you have the statement of one disgruntled former player. Many of the blacklisted players found work there, among other things.  Have anyone ever come out against NE Stars before now for us to even put them on the same track as the TTFF?  How can we even assume that Stern is correct in what he's saying when he making blatantly false statements (obviously based on misinformation) that the club said they "released" him?  All the press release say is that their contract with him has ended.  What is there in that for him to be aggrieved and go knocking the club in public?

I hold no particular briefs for NE Stars... I have no affiliation with them (unless yuh want to count the fact that I went primary school in Guaico, a hop skip and jump from their base) and not even a fan.... but they are the best thing to happen to the ProLeague (from a PR standpoint) in quite some time.  If people aren't troubled by the way Stern chose to go about this then I really doh know.

Well, they won the league title in, I think, 2004 and also the FA Trophy. The club effectively closed for a year and relaunched last year with a new business model. Quite rightly, as you pointed out, youth development was never a focus. Last years plan was to create a buzz, attract sponsors and lay a foundation. This year is to build infrastructure. Next year is to push into CONCACAF.

This year, there are some stunning youngsters playing in the reserves. The plan is to get them playing in the same brand as the seniors so they can be interchanged.

NE are doing a lot of things in the community to promote the game and good citizenship. They need to focus more on getting their football house in order, and overcome some of the bumps in the road. But overall they are doing some very positive things.

I know it takes time to build a philosophy that players, staff and supporters can buy into but North East Stars have been in existence for about 10 years and they have one trophy to their name.

T&TEC come really good in the first season. They mean business. But with all due respect, yuh really can't compare the resources available to T&TEC to the resources available to a fella running a grocery store and Japs Fried Chicken.

NE Stars gettin rel pong in dis thread boy......

Have an acquaintance in Spain who passes thru this site now and again. He just asked me to send him a NES jersey if theyre available. All publicity seems to be good publicity.... ;)

Anyway, NES may not be the most proessional of outfits locally, but they definitely are the most progressive thinking club in the country. A football club isnt only about results on the field, somehow I feel there's no need to say that. But NES is definitely on its way. Should the pro league continue in the next 3-5 years, the NES model will be the one to follow. Just how the W Connection model was the one to follow in the early years.

Players often times bash their clubs in public, thats nothing unusual. I dont understand what the whole furore is about Stern. Stern was wrong and Fuentes in his 'interview' seemed to be more protagonist and ass licker than anything else. But professional institutions dont respond to every angry word spoken out against them.

I like this topic.

Imagine they brought in a Brazilian no name coach they find in the amazon in Brazil and yet they can't win a game, this team operates like the TTFF under Oliver Camps, they cut players pay or threaten them to leave for a reduce fee, they fire players in public instead of dealing with them in a better way and they love the quick fix and expect results right away.

I believe north east stars is bogus.

Yesterday results

T&TEC 0 v North East Stars 0

San Juan Jabloteh 1 v Police 0

If you asked me, Joe Public deserve a thread as they are the most successful team in Trinidsd ever.

North East Stars is a fete match side with a coach who swear he could talk English.

I will call my friend in Brazil and let him know that we have people in T&T who thinks everyone in Brazil knows football, so he must come to Trinidad, he would be guarantee a job, just bring your passport.

Imagine they hired a coach who change jobs every year, ten jobs in ten years, ask yourself why.

Stern John could confirm how Stars operate, someone say fete and DJ and all football is over.

Sancho is a playboy, he love Stars because he is like a big fish in a little pond there.

Ask him what developments Stars are doing for the youths.

North East Stars is a perfect example of how Sancho can run football. They are last on the table considering they have played more games that Police (3 games in hand) and Defence Force (5 games in hand). They have a foreign coach and about 5 foreign players and still cant cut it. Their top scorer is Seon Power with ONE GOAL.

Ask Sancho how to throw fetes, he is good at that.

Carnival is around the corner and teams will go on break again, expect to see the whole NE Stars team in every fete.

Sancho needs to fix his house before he can fix someone else.
Title: Kerry Baptiste signed by Eves modified North East Stars.

Kerry Baptiste signed by Eves modified North East Stars
ttproleague.com

North East Stars Head Coach Angus Eve has included striker Kerry Baptiste into his plans for upcoming TT Pro League season which is expected to begin in August.

It was one of the many new additions made by the Darryl Mahabir owned Sangre Grande club since hiring Eve, on a two-season agreement, this month.

The former San Juan Jabloteh and Ma Pau SC assistant coach entering his first season as head coach of a club began tailoring the Sangre Grande club with the additions of the 30 year old Baptiste and Trinidad &Tobago U23 players, defender Kareem Moses (formally of St. Anns Rangers) and midfielder Micah Lewis (formally of Caledonia AIA).

Baptiste, who climbed his way from T&T U20 to senior level and began his professional career at Jabloteh(2003-2006), is a former teammate and player of Eve at the San Juan club.

Baptiste then moved to Joe Public (2007-2010) and had trials with English Championship club Ipswich Town(December 2009) and Major League Soccer clubs Toronto FC(May 2010) and Seattle Sounders FC(2011) before finally signing a short term deal with North American Soccer League side FC Tampa Bay in July 2011.

He then returned to Trinidad joining T&TEC in January till the end of the 2011-2012 season, but is noted for his record 48 goals in the 2009 season at Joe Public which led to the clubs record haul of five titles.

When you think of an efficient striker at club and national level, you think of Kerry Baptiste, said the new North East Stars coach. So I expect nothing less than twenty(20) goals from him this season.

Baptiste became a free agent after a short spell with last seasons Digicel Pro League runner-up T&TEC which finished just a point shy of champion W Connection.

Eve also revealed during a press conference hosted by the club last Friday at the Larry Gomes Stadium that Jabloteh trio goalkeeper Cleon John, defender Sheldon Bateau and midfielder Elijah Manners have also been signed pending transfers.

While Defenders Glenton Wolfe, Kern Navarro and Seon Power, and midfielder Akeil Guevara are the only players with existing North East Stars contracts and will serve under Eve.

This is a year of consolidation for us, said Eve.

We are going to bring in a lot of players, primarily U23 players who we can continue to develop, to help Trinidad and Tobago go forward not just at youth level but also at senior level. (There would also be) a trickling of senior players so that they can help develop these young players to come on.

Meantime veteran striker Gary Glasgow will serve as assistant coach and new technical additions include former Jabloteh goalkeeping coach Brian James, former Ma Pau SC team administrator Brian Bain and Earl Joseph as team physiotherapist.

Eve opened his speech on Friday by congratulating fellow Pro League club Caledonia AIA on winning the Caribbean Football Union(CFU) Club Championship.

In a couple years thats where we want to be, he said.

The former T&T international said that the plans of the club includes further developing its very vibrant youth academy, use the Reserve League as a development system and play a very attractive and competitive style at the senior level.

Moses delighted to join Eve at Stars.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

National Under-23 team defender Kareem Moses was one of Angus Eves first major signing since he took over the post of head coach, at Pro League outfit DirecTV North East Stars and the former St Anns Rangers man is more than happy to repay Eve for the vote of confidence.

Moses was one of the better performing members of the recent T&T Olympic team that participated in the qualifiers for London 2012. Eve went on record praising the central defender for his efforts.

Coach Angus called me and ask if I was interested in joining North East and I didnt have to think twice about the move, Moses said.

We have a good understanding and Im happy to be joining him at the club. I think he has a good understanding of what he wants to achieve and Im looking forward to being part of the whole exercise.

Moses still hopes to attract interest from overseas and has agreed to a deal that can see him depart if the opportunity arises.

I want to play in a foreign league so even though I have signed with North East for the season, there is the option for me to leave if something comes up where the club will also benefit in some way. But my first priority now is North East Stars, the 22-year-old Moses added.

One on one with North East Stars midfielder Jeromie Williams
By Dominique Webb (Wired868)

The first thing that hits you about 24-year-old North East Stars midfield enforcer Jeromie Williams is his round appearance. Williams, who also answers to the nickname Butters, stands at five-foot-two but more than compensates with his beefy 179-pound frame.

He is quicker than he looks over short distances, though, and as focused as they come. When he hits you, the jokes stop.

Butters career started with Goal City in his Tobago hometown of Castara before moving to St Clairs Coaching School and then to Trinidad where he had stints with United Petrotrin and W Connection before linking up with his national under-23 coach, Angus Eve, at Stars.

Williams, now an established Digicel Pro League player, sat down with Wired868 to talk some more about his career thus far:

Full name: Jeromie Curtly Williams

Date of birth: 17 May 1989

Hometown: Castara, Tobago

Former schools: Castara Primary School and Scarborough Secondary School

Position: Midfield and sometimes defence

Favourite player: I have two: Michael Essien from Chelsea and Gennaro Gattuso from AC Milan.

Favourite team: Chelsea

How did you get into playing football?

I came from a football family. My family plays football in the village and my uncle, Kevon Manswell, once played with the Trinidad and Tobago national Under-17 team.

How did you get the nickname Butters?

When I just started playing, I was very chubby and people called me Butterball.

How would you describe yourself as a person?

I am a cool person and like to have fun.

What is something most people do not know about you?

I am a shy person.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy hanging out with my friends and going to the beach and the movies. My favourite would be Castara Beach in Tobago; and I love action movies.

Who had the most influence on your career?

My mother Perline George and dad David Williams. They always supported me throughout my career.

Who were your most important coaches?

Marvin Lewis and Bertille St Clair started my career and then there was Brian Williams, Stuart Charles-Fevrier and, presently, Angus Eve. All my coaches thought me how to improve my game.

What makes you stand out as a player?

I would have to say my chubbiness. I am bigger than most midfielders and most people would usually ask: Who is that fat guy in the midfield?

What was your best moment in football so far?

My best moments were playing against Mexico in the Pan-American Games and the 2011 Olympic Qualifiers. I would say the atmosphere and the experience (of those games) made them the best.

Which team do you look forward to playing the most?

I look forward to playing all the teams; but mostly the top teams like W Connection because they give you a greater fight for the win.

What is your pre-match routine?

I drink a lot of water and I usually stay off my legs as well.

What pushes you to succeed?

I like to be independent and, by 30, I must own my own home and car and be able to relax.

What would be success for you as a player?

Winning the World Cup and playing professionally outside of Trinidad.

What is your immediate target?

To win the Pro League competition.

Butters was always an enigma. His shape is all wrong, yet he's a very good midfielder. We signed him to North East Stars and, I felt we did much to develop him for the U23's. He's certainly at home with the midfield enforcer role and is one of the reasons that North East are always hard to beat.

Name change for North East Stars.
By NICKOLAI MADRAY NYLO (Newsday).

NORTH EAST Stars FC will soon be formally known as Ma Pau Stars FC during the 2016-2017 local football season.

According to a media release from the club, Ma Pau Members Club reached an agreement to partner with the club in a deal worth $4 million for the Pro League season.

The club considers this negotiation to be beneficial to the football fraternity and by extension Trinidad and Tobagos World Cup qualifying team. The management of Ma Pau also shared their beliefs in giving back to the community as this is just one of the channels in which they have chosen to venture.

The members of the North East Stars FC extended their gratitude to Ma Pau Members Club and its management for their support and are looking forward to future partnered success in the 2016-2017 season..

Fenwick poised to take over North East Stars, will move club to Arima Velodrome
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

Terry Fenwick looks set for a sensational return to the Pro League with increased powers to boot, as the successful and combative English coach declared that he will lead North East Stars into battle for the 2017 season.

The deal, according to Fenwick, would give the former San Juan Jabloteh and Central FC coach full authority over all football operations at the club, although Stars owner Darryl Mahabir remains as chairman.

Over the last month, Darryl Mahabir and I have met on several occasions to figure out how we will handle the situation, Fenwick told Wired868. He will remain as our chairman but all football matters will come under my remit, so he can get on with his outside interests.

Mahabir could not be reached for comment. However, a senior official at Stars confirmed that a formal deal between the two parties appears to be a matter of when and not if.

Basically, the plan is for Terry to take over the running of the club, he said, under the condition of anonymity. The confirmation should happen within the next 24 hours.

Arguably, the most eye-raising aspect of Fenwicks return lies in his new base. Stars, who initially played at Ojoe Road in Sangre Grande but have not had a home for years, have agreed a deal with the Arima Borough Council to move the club to the Arima Velodrome.

We feel that we have got a bit of a coup there, said Fenwick, a former England World Cup player and Tottenham Spurs captain. The Arima Mayor [Lisa Morris] is quite keen for us to use the Velodrome as a home base. The Velodrome is possibly the only stadium that is right in the heart of a community.

Everything revolves around the Velodrome and it has such a great following. From my experience in the past, even minor league games at the Velodrome would attract 1,000 fans and sometimes more.

It is a focal point [for Arimians] and this is something we hope to take advantage of.

Arima Mayor Lisa Morris-Julian said she is excited by the pending arrival of not only Fenwicks Stars but also National Super League champions FC Santa Rosa, who are led by interim Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) president Keith Look Loy.

Santa Rosa played at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya for the last two years while they used the UTT facilities in Malabar before that.

Morris hopes the two clubs can return the spotlight to a community that once produced or showcased talented players like Kerry Jamerson, Timothy Haynes, Kerwin Papa Emmanuel, Derek King, Dwayne and Craig Demmin and the late Mickey Trotman.

Morris knows first-hand the power of sport in the borough. Her father, Raymond Morris, had close ties with the Arima Memphis football club while her grandfather, Leroy Morris, was a footballer before he became Arima mayor.

Officially, Mr Fenwick will receive his [confirmation] letter on Thursday but it was already discussed and decided upon unanimously by the Borough, Morris told Wired868. We are just excited that someone of Mr Fenwicks international stature would come here and [help] Arima to be the football mecca as it once was back in the 1970s and 1980s.

So we hope with Mr Fenwick and Mr Look Loy, we can once more be a powerhouse in Trinidad and even the Caribbean.

Two years ago, Fenwick was on the verge of a similar relationship in the Morvant/Laventille region, which had the blessing of then MP Donna Cox and Sport Ministry Permanent Secretary Gillian MacIntyre.

However, the proposal ended in controversy after Kevin Harrisonthen advisor to Sport Minister Brent Sanchoordered MacIntyre to withdraw the Ministrys financial support.

Fenwick was previously employed by Harrison and Sancho at Central FC and parted way on acrimonious terms, despite helping the pair to their maiden Pro League and Caribbean Cup titles in 2015.

The Sport Ministry subsequently started a probe into its support for the project, which was a collaborative effort by Fenwick and the Ma Pau Casino. MacIntyre gave a TT$450,000 cheque to the fledgling Ma Pau Morvant Sports Club, as was within her remit as PS. However, the application fee for the Pro League was TT$400,000.

Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene said, at the time, that his body felt it was an innocent mistake while the Sport Ministry never proved fraudulent behaviouralthough two employees, exclusive of the PS, were suspended pending investigations.

This time, Fenwick appears to have avoided controversy. Harrison claimed that his only concern is regarding the details of Stars new partnership at board room level. Once more, Ma Pau, according to Harrison, is involved.

My only question was concerning the status of Ma Pau, said Harrison. To date, I am not aware of the arrangement made between Ma Pau and North East Stars regarding ownership, etc. When Ma Pau were in the League before and they left, apparently they owed players some money. So have they sorted that out first?

Otherwise, I cant see it being a problem. We have no problem with [Fenwick]. He always makes football more interesting and I think the League needs that spice.

So far, Fenwick has not revealed whether he has any financial backers and who they might be.

Arima is already making adjustments for the new year and Morris said Sport Minister Darryl Smith promised to help develop the India Ground in Malabar, which would allow the Borough to comfortably host Pro League and Super League games without leaving out the Arima League.

It is exciting times ahead, said Morris. We have the room and we just look forward to embracing everyone. I would also like to acknowledge the social aspect of both plans. Both [Fenwick and Look Loy] have promised to give back to the at-risk communities in Arima.

Santa Rosa have always been closely intertwined with the community but will now actively go out to the at-risk areas while [Fenwicks] Football Factory is also supposed to come to Arima.

Fenwick explained how he thinks he can provide a social benefit to Arima.

We are looking at opening a Football Factory in Arima that will help young players develop and learn the game and get life skills, said Fenwick. And by that I mean discipline, communication, leadership skills, confidence and all kinds of life skills. In Port of Spain, we have kids from all walks of lifekids from Morvant and Caledonia who cant speak to each other on their block but get along at Football Factory.

Not all of these kids will be excellent footballers. The better youngsters will move on and compete with the professional youth teams. So we see it as a holistic all-round program.

In Port in Spain, where we attract 175 kids, we can sometimes have as many as 150 parents who come out to watch their kids go through their drills on Tuesday and Thursday evening. So we see that as the family aspect of it

We have had a good working relationship with the British High Commission in the past on anti-gang initiatives as well that maybe we can help to get started in Arima.

The Football Factory, like most football academies, operates with a combination of paid players and others who receive scholarships. Fenwick and Morris said both parties still need to iron out further details of their partnership beyond Stars use of the Velodrome.

In terms of the Pro League clubs ambitions on the field, Fenwick promised to create a team capable of challenging for the title within a year and a half. The Englishman unearthed a stream of teenaged talent at Jablotehsuch as Khaleem Hyland, Sheldon Bateau, Ataulla Guerra, Robert Primus and Lester Peltierand will attempt to use a similar formula in Arima.

We are looking at the development of young players because there are some terrific young players out there, said Fenwick. So we want a handful of experienced playerswho are good role modelsto lead a young team that might take 18 months to reach their full potential.

We recognise that we need to have an excellent team and we hope people in Arima are patient as we build. I want a sprinkling of senior boys that will give us some shape to start with, but that will be four or five tops.

While Fenwick declined the chance to name any youthful transfer targets, he did mention a 41-year-old talisman who worked alongside him at Jabloteh and Central.

The evergreen Marvin Oliver, who spent last season with relegated Super League Premiership Division team, Maracas FC, is first on Fenwicks list and could operate as a player/coach for Stars.

Marvin is somebody I have a lot of time for because I recognise his professionalism and how he applies himself, said Fenwick. He leads by example and gives good information to the youngsters on and off the training ground. I will speak to Marvin in due course [and] I will like his involvement. But it is still early stages.

Fenwick also identified King, the former Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team assistant coach, as a potential asset for his coaching staff.

King, who still lives in Arima, is a former Pro League champion coach with Joe Public and steered the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-20 Team to the Caribbean Cup title in 2004. He quit the national team last November after the David John-Williams-led TTFA administration dismissed head coach Stephen Hart.

Fenwick has already approached King and hopes to convince the promising 36-year-old coach to join him at Stars.

We need people on the ground who are capable of looking after the programme, said Fenwick. I would run the programmeto make sure it is delivered with the same quality and intensitybut I want to rely on people like Derek King for his expertise and knowledge of the area.

I havent decided on what role he will have yet because I need to talk to him [formally] to see if he is available.

The Pro League has not revealed a start date for its new season although it is expected to kick off in May.

Fenwicks potential move to Arima will mark the first time a Pro League team has used the Velodrome as its home base since Arima Fire in 2000.

Stars used the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar in recent years but the inadequate lighting at the venue meant that they often played home games at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva instead.

Darryl has been a bit frustrated not to have a home ground in Grande but he is delighted we got the velodrome, said Fenwick. He wants to see his baby, his North East Stars, go on to bigger and better things. He has had several coaches fail to deliver what he was looking for.

As always, Fenwick backs himself to deliver something special.

The Englishman is the Pro Leagues second most accomplished league coach with four titles, which is one short of the five league trophies held by W Connection technical director Stuart Charles-Fevrier.

Fenwick is also the only coach to win league trophies with two separate clubs, although there is a caveat. He spent barely a month at Central when he won his only league trophy with that club in 2014after Sancho and Harrison replaced coach Zoran Vranes within touching distance of the finish line.

Ross Russell subsequently replaced Fenwick at Central but was fired midway through the season, which the Couva Sharks again won. Russell managed two Pro League titles at Defence Force but did not get the chance to match Fenwicks feat of succeeding at more than one team.

Ironically, Russell coached Stars last season. However, Wired868 understands that all player and coaching contracts at the club expired earlier this year, which gives Fenwick a free hand to reshape the team.

Fenwick will attract players to NE Stars. And, possibly in exodus proportions too.

Excellent that they got the Arima Velodrome as their home ground.

The cycle track is a natural, and ample buffer between the action on the field and the crowd in the stands.

It means that Terry will have to travel that much further to cuff dong any rival supporters.

Wide opposition players will unfortunately still be in danger of slide and rugby tackles from the "passionate" coach tho

It would be good if they could sync FC Santa Rosa and NE Stars home games into double headers at the drome.

Arima is a buzz on a friday night. Imagine if you throw in some competitive football on top of that. The major issue is the quality of the field. Haven't been there in a while but it could do with a re-grassing if possible.

One of the reason why people has never taken the pro-league seriously. Teams come a go so often. It was Arima Fire, South West drillers?, Mau Pau, Joe Public. I can't remember the others. There is no stability with clubs. The stable clubs do not get the sponsors. But I think it is a good move that NE and Santa Rosa can share the same field. Hopefully, Keith can get some money and bring his team to the proleague. Then there will be a real rivalry in Arima. It would be nice if Tunapuna and Tacarigua can form a a team and play under the name of Eddie Hart United or something like that. That would be interesting.

North East Stars sale fails to go through.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

DARRYL MAHABIR is still the owner of TT Pro League club North East Stars after a failed attempt by former San Juan Jabloteh and Central FC coach Terry Fenwick to purchase the franchise.

Mahabir, in a telephone interview yesterday, said: Terry and another guy (name called) attempted to purchase the franchise, but based on procedural issues at the Pro League, they werent successful. So I would have retained the ownership of the franchise, at this point in time.

Asked what were the procedural issues, Mahabir responded, I prefer the Pro League say (what are) the procedural issues. However, Pro League CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Dexter Skeene said that the League had no part to play in that matter, insisting that it is an issue between the club and the potential buyer.

I dont know what hes specifically referring to. Im not sure. He would be the best person the best placed to give that in detail, because its regarding his club.

So he would know exactly what are the different factors why he couldnt sell the club, Skeene said.

The long-standing Pro League CEO pointed out, A person is free to sell their club, thats their business. The club is their business, so they could sell their club.

The (main issue) is that anybody whos coming into the League has to show that theyre financially able and equipped, as well as administratively, to run a club. Skeene made it clear that the League had no say in that process, nor had any issue with Fenwick himself.

Anybody (who is) selling a club, thats between (both parties), said Skeene. They just have to prove to the League that the person is financially equipped to handle all the financial affairs of the club. Contacted yesterday, Fenwick declined to elaborate on the transaction but said Mahabir was doing a terrific job as owner of North East Stars and wished him success.

Mahabir, when asked why he was selling the club, replied, personal issues, as it relates to my business. He noted, I wouldnt say financial.

I would say more on the basis of putting more of my energy into the business, which I have recently re-branded, Darryls Famous Foods, formerly Japs Fried Chicken. With regards to whether or not hell plan to sell the team once more, Mahabir noted, I am still in talks with the League as it relates to what is required for the sale of a franchise. As soon as they give that, then (Ill decide).

I dont know if Terry will still be interested. I cant say. Former Joe Public coach and national assistant tactician Derek King has asummed the role as North East coach for the 2017 season.

North East Stars eye Pro League lead.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

North East Stars, coached by Derek King, will have a chance to go three points clear at the top of the 2017 T&T Pro League table when it welcomes Police FC at its Arima Velodrome home ground from 8pm tonight. King showered praise on his players for the teams best run of form in recent years.

A lot of credit must be given to the players, said King, a 37-year-old Arima-native, who unexpectedly stood in charge of a squad equipped with the likes of Rundell Winchester, Leston Paul, Kevon Villaroel, Elton John, Kerry Baptiste, Kordell Samuel, Yohance Marshall, Seon Thomas, Jameel Neptune and goalkeeper Akel Clarke among others.

Our players are buying into how I am trying to play the team, added the North East Stars coach.

Weve had no problems in the attitude of the players and they are all giving their full efforts in every session. We have a nice bunch with experience and youth. And I say youth, but these are some young guys with three to four years at the Pro League level.

Nobody expected us to be where we are currently and challenging for the league title. Its also great to put Arima back on the map like the old days with Memphis United and Arima United and to try and achieve something for the owner Darryl Mahabir and all the people that are on board with us.

King though, is fully aware that the truncated 2017 calendar (June 9 December 17) is still in the early stages.

We havent won anything yet, so we are trying to keep our players focused. We also have to improve in our play because defensively we are lacking discipline and mistakes can cost us. On the other end of the field we are creating chances but not putting them away as much as we should.

King who was an assistant coach to former Soca Warriors head coach Stephen Hart initially joined on as North East Stars assistant coach, took charge of the now Arima-based club a week before competition following a failed attempt by former multiple-time Pro League winning coach, Terry Fenwick, to lead the club into the 2017 season.

Its good to be back coaching competitively every week in the Pro League and competing against guys who Ive played with such as Angus Eve (Club Sando) and Dale Saunders (Central FC), and against Stuart Charles-Fevrier (W Connection) who coached me, said King, who will have available former T&T youth midfielder Duane Muckette for the first time this season when the Stars take on the Lawmen.

Currently, the Savonetta Boys as W Connection is called head the ten-team standings with 13 points from six matches, the same as Stars who have a match in hand while Club Sando and San Juan Jabloteh are next with ten points each.

Three-time defending champions Central FC lies in fifth spot with eight points from five matches followed by Police FC and Morvant Caledonia United with six apiece, Defence Force (five), St Anns Rangers (four) and Pt Fortin Civic, a point less.

Stars will enter tonights match on the back of a 2-2 top-of-the-table draw with W Connection last time out on July 14, but it is not certain of coach King, who previously led Joe Public to five titles in one season will have his full quota of players available.

This as defender Kevon Villaroel and midfielder Leston Paul, a former national Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup captain were due to return with the Soca Warriors team yesterday from national duty and may be rested.

Police was also held to a draw 0-0, by Pt Fortin Civic also on July 14, but will a chance to leapfrog the champions into fifth spot, the Richard Hood-coached squad will be up for the challenge.

In tomorrows other matches, St Anns Rangers host Morvant Caledonia United at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar from 4pm while W Connection tackles Defence Force in the opening match at Couva from 4pm.

The other match on schedule between, Pt Fortin Civic and San Juan Jabloteh has been rescheduled for Friday August 18 at Mahaica Oval, Pt Fortin, from 6pm as the San Juan-based club, runners-up in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship held here in May, will leave on the weekend in two batches for San Jose, Costa Rica.

Jabloteh is set to face Santos de Gupiles on Tuesday at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aym in the inaugural Scotiabank Concacaf League (SCL), part of the Confederations expanded competitions platform, kicks off in August with the Round-of-16 while

Central FC, fourth in this years CFU competition host Panamas Deportivo rabe Unido on Thursday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 8pm with the return matches set for August 8 and 10 respectively.

At the end of the home-and-away ties, the aggregate winners will progress to the quarter-finals later in the month. The league resumes following a two-week break for T&Ts international friendly away to Ecuador on Wednesday night, a 3-1 loss.

North East Stars last result, a late 2-2 comeback draw against leaders W Connection on July 14, proved more than a point and five a five-game undefeated stretch for head coach Derek King.

It showcased the return of a young and talented coach to the Pro League. Thats if his four wins in as many matchesPoint Fortin Civic (1-0), Defence Force (2-1), Morvant Caledonia United (1-0) and St. Anns Rangers (2-1)prior to the Connection visit werent convincing enough.

Connection had taken a two-goal first half cushion in Couva but the Stars, following tactical changes by King, rebounded late with a goal each from pre-season signings Jameel Neptune and Kordell Samuel to hold the Savonetta Boysa team managed by the most successful coach in the Pro League, Stuart Charles-Fevrierto a draw.

King, however, preferred to shower the praise on his players for the teams best run of form of recent years which has them positioned second on the Pro League 2017 standings and tied on 13 points with leaders Connection, and with a game in hand against three-time defending champions Central FC.

King and his North East Stars side, which now calls Arima home, will return to action on Friday 28 July when they host Police FC from 8pm at the Arima Velodrome.

King, a former Trinidad and Tobago international, began his professional career as a player at Connection, under the clubs current coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier in 1999, but later joined rivals Joe Public.

A knee injury, however, in 2002 curtailed a promising career, forcing the defender to move into coaching at Joe Public at an early age.

King went on to enjoy success as a club coach most notably leading the Eastern Lions to a historic five-title haul in 2009, including the Pro League title as the youngest winning coach to do so at age 29.

King also had various stints at the national levelhis most recent being assistant coach to former Soca Warriors head coach Stephen Hart.

Then through luck as it may be, King, who initially joined on as North East Stars assistant coach, took charge of the now Arima-based club a week before competition following a failed attempt by former multiple-time Pro League winning coach, Terry Fenwick, to lead the club into the 2017 season.

Pro League action will continue on Saturday 29 July with a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva when Central FC take on Club Sando, a side on a three-game winning streak, from 4pm, followed by W Connection against Defence Force from 6pm.

Also on Saturday MIC-IT St. Anns Rangers, 1-0 winners over three-time Pro League holders Central FC in their last outing, will host Morvant Caledonia United from 4pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar.

San Juan Jablotehs visit to Point Fortin Civic has been rescheduled to August 18 due to the San Juan Kings away fixture against Costa Ricas Santos de Guapiles on August 1 on the international stage in the inaugural Scotiabank CONCACAF League, which also involves Central FC.

Baptiste, 36, reaches for the Stars
T&T Newsday

Veteran striker Kerry Baptiste has no intention of hanging up his football boots, even as he achieved his fifth TT Pro League crown in November.

In a recent interview, the 36-year-old Baptiste acknowledged, I won it five times, twice with Jabloteh, (one with) Joe Public, Central FC and now here with North East.

He was a member of the victorious Jabloteh teams which lifted the league crowns in 2002 and 2003-2004 seasons, as well as Joe Public (2009), Central FC (2015-2016) and North East Stars (2017).

Its always good to end the season on a high note, he said. The coach (Derek King) and (technical staff) put together a team with experienced men, and that will beat you everyday. The results will show, and were 2017 Pro League champions. Its a good feeling and Im enjoying it. I enjoy playing.

Baptiste began his career as a midfielder, both at Mucurapo Senior (now East Mucurapo Secondary) and at the national Under-20 level, before he was utilised as a striker by King during his time with Joe Public.

At Joe Public, he had his most prolific season (2009), netting a record 34 goals which still stands and taking the accolade as the Pro Leagues Player of the Year.

This past season, Baptiste was mainly used as a substitute and netted four goals in the campaign.

Im enjoying playing the game and thats what keeps me motivated, he said. Every time I step out on the field and its time for training, Im excited.

A number of experienced players were involved with North East Stars in the 2017 season, including ex-national captain Densill Theobald, team skipper Elton John as well as defenders Julius James and Yohance Marshall.

Most of the younger guys in this team, theyve shown me and a lot of the senior guys respect, Baptiste stated. We know what were about. Weve been playing the game for a while.

When we talk to them, they try their best to take heed, we always try to keep them at the right path and let them know the ins-and-outs, that professionalism is on and off the field, he added. We hope that they could take heed and, in the future, be our age and still playing.

How will he rank this Pro League title? It was a good one, he replied. I really enjoyed this one. Ive never played with a friend of mine, Densill Theobald, at club level.

I (got) the opportunity to play with him for the first time and he won the Pro League title for the first time this year. So I enjoyed that. Next season, God spare life, I hope to cop another title, Baptiste ended.

When asked about his long-term ambitions, Baptiste replied, Nobody really can tell me when to stop playing. I will stop playing when I feel to stop playing. Once Im getting the respect from whatever club Im with (Ill keep playing).

But when I stop playing, Ill try to go into the coaching, Ill try to get into the coaching academies, he continued.

Looking to 2018 with North East Stars, he said, CFU (Club Championship 2018) is ahead of us. Well try to win the CFU group, qualify for CONCACAF (Club Championship) and take it from there.

At the international stage, Baptiste has played 50 times for Trinidad and Tobago, from 2003-2010, netting 12 times. He is still keeping his fingers crossed that he can add to those figures (appearances and goals) one day.

Ive never called retirement at the international level, he said. At the end of the day, the coaches have their jobs to do. I always leave that option open. Its always an honour to represent your country. Like I always say, age is a number.

With regards to his fitness level, Baptiste pointed out, I try to take care of myself a lot. I try to eat as disciplined as I could. I try to work hard, I try to rest as much as I could. I think that is what helps me a bit.

King, 10 players leave North East Stars.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Players object to $2500 basic wage deal

Pro League champion club North East Stars were thrown into turmoil after more than 80 percent of its players and staff could not agree with the direction the club is heading under the new management team being led by businessman Ryan Nunes and Michael Awai, the former FUTGOF manager.

Yesterday, coach Derek King confirmed his exit from the team after venting his disgust in the team's decision to implement a basic wage deal of between $2500 to $3000 monthly salary payment for all players. The management also decided that the team should field an under-21 team for the 2018/19 pro league season.

King has been followed by ten players Elton John, Yohance Marshall, Julius James, Rundell Winchester, Densill Theobald, Akeem Garcia, Kevin Goddard, Kerry Baptiste, Jevon Neptune, Akile Clarke and equipment manager Selwyn Gabriel.

Some players have already signed deals with Central FC which has advanced to the final phase of the CONCACAF Caribbean Champions League, while others secured contracts with other international clubs.

King who guided the team to victory last year after winning 12 matches, losing two and drawing four, has described the package as madness and questioned the logic in paying all players a fixed amount, despite their experience and ability.

King, who commanded a salary of $8, 000 a month because of his experience, was one of the highest paid in the club. But when contacted Awai said the club's business model does not cater to pay players exorbitant amounts as it did not make proper business sense in the current economic environment.

In addition to challenges to receive pro league earnings, the club will be unable to sustain itself financially if it paid large salaries. The club's business model entails developing and paying players basic wages and selling them to international clubs.

"This is the only way we can sustain ourselves," Awai explained. The clubs was scheduled to begin negotiations on new deals on February 1 after the contracts of all the players came to an end in December last year. And Awai made it clear they will not be able to afford the players although they would like to have them.

Most of the players even though they may command a larger salary than the base being offered will still not meet the age requirement of being under 20.

Awai questioned why players could not play for a basic salary when the club's earnings were minimal. "What's wrong with playing for a decent amount until they get the opportunity to earn huge amounts at an international club," Awai asked.

The club forks out approximately $1 million to fund the team in the pro league for the year, but now the Sangre Grande club will require an additional amount to ensure the team participates in the Caribbean Club Championship next year.

Only recently the club had to default all its matches in the Flow Youth Pro League in the under-14, 16 and 18 categories as it was not properly registered.

Prior to this development ah heard that $1500 is the lowest wage players can earn in the Pro League, either per league policy/agreement of the clubs. However, because that's not a realistically sustainable wage, what's offered tends to be "more". See below for what "more" could be. A player right out of school might ketch at $1500 but not for long.

In the PL, players can be lured from one club to another by the incentive of receiving a $500 increase. It happens.

The interesting thing about this development is that the U-21 policy would create room to mitigate an issue ... getting younger players playing time. HOWEVER, internal club business or not, the Pro League directorate should not let that slippery slope occur because the league has a product to protect.

Other than that, some transitional teething issues are evident in the NE Stars acquisition.

Vranes to take over at North East.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Former national football coach, Yugoslavian Zoran Vranes is set to take over at North East Stars for the coming T&T Pro League season.

Vranes who still considers himself a Trinidadian, having coached the country's senior team in 1994-1996; 2003; assistant coach in 2009-2010 and Under-20 coach in 2009-2010, is expected to sign on the dotted line over the next two days. The former head coach at Joe Public Football Club in 2001-2002 and Central FC in 2014-2015, was hesitant to offer a comment until he signs the contract. However, he told Guardian Media Sports that he is happy to be back in T&T football.

He promised to do his best to guide the pro league's defending champion team to its second title in as many years.

Vranes will work for a Board that is results-oriented and favours attractive football. The Yugoslavian is expected to be equipped with a few marquee players as well as other talented young players that have emerged from the club's youth system.

It is understood the club will also make provisions for amateur players, who are likely to come from the nation's schools, to play and be paid on a game-by-game basis.

Director of Football Michael Awai, the Arima-based team intends to revolutionise the business model of the sport in T&T and the way clubs manage its affairs.

Its foundation will be a youthful development academy at which players will be prepared to represent the club's junior and senior teams. The club's development structure will also prepare players to be shipped out to teams abroad on contracts.

The club is set to be bigger and stronger than last year, with players expected to receive all the winnings from the First Citizens Cup as a form of incentive to them. A member of the club said all efforts will be made to ensure players are treated like professionals and are comfortable.

Vranes will be in charge of all the teams and coaches. Yesterday, he painted a bleak picture of the standard of local football in T&T. He said the quality of play has dropped more than 10 years behind and he felt obligated to return to help lift the standard of local football to where it should be at present, starting at North East Stars.

He was left bemused by the disparity between T&T football and the level being played internationally.

He said, "I can't understand why we do not have a lot more players in the Leagues in Europe and elsewhere. It is very sad because when I coached here at the senior and junior levels, we had players who held their own against top teams such as the Brazil Under-20 and Paraguay etc." V

According to Vranes, "One thing I know is that T&T has a lot of players with potential, but now we must work hard in all areas to ensure the standard is rise again."

The club joined the TT Pro League in 2002, making the step up from the Eastern Communities Football Union League and immediately garnered the support of football fans in the teams North Eastern orbit. In 2003, the Stars were crowned the best team in the nation, winning the countrys oldest up competition the TTFAs FA Trophy. The team won the Pro League in 2004 and again in 2017. Football fraternity crushed as former North East Stars owner Mahabir dies.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The local football community was crushed on Wednesday following the untimely passing of Darryl Mahabir, the former North East Stars owner and director who became another statistic of the COVID-19 virus.

At 48, Mahabir was the owner of the tasty Darryl's Famous Foods formerly 'Japs' Chicken franchise who, because of his love for the game of football, entered the top flight T&T Pro League in 2002. That move helped in transforming the Sangre Grande community where he grew up, as it created many opportunities for people who lived there.

The team received a 'baptism of fire' in their first season, finishing last in the league with a dismal record of four wins, two ties, and 22 losses. They improved dramatically in 2003, however, jumping from last to third, as they went 19710. They improved even further in 2004, surprising everyone by winning the league with a dominant 1452 performance. They finished fifth in 2005.

On Thursdayday, two former players turned coach - Kevin Jeffreys and Derek King - hailed Mahabir as unique, saying he presented opportunities as coach and administrators to them.

Jeffreys said: "It mashed me up yesterday (Wednesday) when I got the news. Darryl did a lot for me and my family. One of the reasons I retired was because he saw me as a good manager, although I wanted to coach.

"He said 'you would be a good administrator' and he really gave me that opportunity to get to the other side of football, so I owe a lot to him. It is still unbelievable to me because I thought he would have been able to fight that cold, so when I got the call yesterday it was real emotional for me.

"At North/East Stars I did everything. I was a technical director initially, I was a club manager, I was a youth team coach, I was assistant coach, so North/East was an institution that afforded me a lot of experiences on the other side of playing.

"Darryl and I had a business arrangement as well. I used to provide salads for him in the early part of Japs. And after he took that sabbatical of two years, I think was 2007-2009, he wanted to come back out with the team, that's how Brent Sancho got involved."

And according to King: "Darryl would spend his last dollar to see football. He used to throw off-season tournament in Sangre Grande, because he just love the sport, I don't think you get plenty like him.

"Where we built that bond though, was when a survey was done among the T&T Pro League teams and they had North East coming last, and I told him 'boss you don't worry, we will win the league for you'.

"We went on to lift the title that year and he was really really shocked, because we didn't really had funding. And when he met with the players he was very honest with them and I don't think he is owing any player, any money."

North East is now defunct, having been taken over by businessman Ryan Nunes. The club is now called AC Port-of-Spain.

Under Mahabir, however, the club can boast of being champions once in 2004; Big Six Winners 2004; FA Trophy winners 2003; runners-up 2006, 201011; First Citizens Cup Runners-up 2006,2016/2017 2014; Toyota Classic winners 2012 and Lucozade Sport Goal Shield winners in 2010.

Rest in Paradise DM. I did not know him personally. When he founded NE Stars, I was told by Mike Grayson he was a QRC Old Boys. I was happy to see an Old Boy with a business support the local area football team. So off course I followed the team closely. I saw his battled to get a piece of land in the Grande area to build a proper football field. It fell to naughts. But he tried. Congrats on that effort. Condolences to his family. God Bless!

AC Port of Spain's Jomoul Francois eyes return after fracturing leg
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

After spending just over six months on the sideline after suffering a serious injury during the midst of the inaugural T&T Premier Football League (TTPFL) season in June 2023, AC PoS striker Jomoul Francois is targeting a return for the ongoing 2023/24 campaign next month.

Francois, 28, was one of the key figures for AC PoS as they made their charge for the TTPFL title last year scoring eight league goals to go with exciting direct play up top. On June 20, Francois season came to an end during an AC PoS training session in Valsayn, as he fractured his right leg after trying to shoot to goal in a 50/50 duel with defender Kerron St Cyr. The injury occurred just four days before AC PoS season-defining game with Defence Force on the final day of the TTPFL season.

Army won the thrilling encounter by a 2-1 margin at the Arima Velodrome to finish the season on 56 points one more than AC PoS and clinch the TTPFL title. As he recalled the unfortunate incident which he said was a freak accident, Francois said he struggled to hold back the tears as he thought about the ramifications of his injury.

All the pain came down on me. I was trying to lift my foot off the ground but I could not move. (My teammates) had to lift me off the field. It was a really big letdown for me, knowing it (happened before) the last game of the season, Francois told Newsday. It was like a final, if we had won the game, we would have won the league. Unfortunately, I did not even get to play so it was a bit difficult on my side.

It was heart-breaking. It did not come my way so it was a bit difficult to get over.

Francois, who made his T&T mens debut under then-coach Dennis Lawrence in 2019, also felt as though his dreams of representing the national team could potentially fade away.

Yeah, national team selection ran through my mind. All of these things ran through my mind, he said.

The nippy forward was among a host of locally based players who turned out for the Soca Warriors in friendly action away to Jamaica in March 2023 under coach Angus Eve. Francois started the game in his favoured number nine position and played 62 minutes as T&T got a 1-0 win via a Reon Moore goal.

During his rehabilitation period, Francois said T&T team manager Richard Piper contacted him to see how the recovery process was going. Francois road to recovery included monthly visits to Medical Associates Hospital in St Joseph where was treated by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Emerson Budhoo. His last visit to Dr Budhoo was in November.

Francois then had two weeks of therapy sessions with The Sports Medic T&T in St Augustine, before they were paused during the Christmas period. Under AC PoS guidance, Francois said he will be resuming physiotherapy this week as he works his way towards his return.

He said, The support (from AC PoS) was good. It could have been better. They helped with my doctor fees and stuff, so it was good. When he suffered the injury last season, Francois was approaching the end of a four-month contract that would have covered the inaugural TTPFL season which spanned from March to June 2023. With AC PoS starting the 2023/24 season with four consecutive wins, Francois intends to rejoin the Capital Boys as they take another shot at the TTPFL title.

I have not signed a new contract yet. I have not signed a contract with anyone, but most likely I will be signing a new contract with AC PoS.

And though he wants to get back to the beautiful game, Francois is not rushing the process.

So far, I am free to walk. I just have to do gym work on my foot to strengthen it back up and that is it. From there, I will start to run and be in training with the guys.

For now, I would like to take it day by day. I want to get better and stronger, and then we will take it from there.
