Title: Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur
Post by: freakazoid on August 10, 2007, 06:50:02 AM
Sunderland     v    Tottenham Hotspur
   We say:  Away win (ESPNSOCCERNET)

Tottenham will be without new signing Gareth Bale as the left-back is recovering from thigh and knee problems picked up in pre-season. England internationals Ledley King and Aaron Lennon are recovering from summer knee surgery, while Young-Pyo Lee and Benoit Assou-Ekotto (both knee) are also out. Hossam Ghaly and Kevin-Prince Boateng are short of match-fitness.

Record signing Craig Gordon is set to make his Premier League debut after successfully shrugging off a shoulder injury. Boss Roy Keane is definitely without Grant Leadbitter for up to a month with a hamstring injury, and will give late tests to Carlos Edwards (groin) and Greg Halford (hamstring). Youngster Michael Kay and midfielder Dean Whitehead are standing by as possible replacements. Striker Roy O'Donovan should figure in the squad provided his registration comes through in time.

ROY KEANE'S BIRTHDAY WISH
Keane's birthday wish

By Nick Alexander

Roy Keane celebrates his 36th birthday today and his wish is simple - three points against Tottenham.

Keane will spend the day finalising his team plans for tomorrow's Barclays Premier League opener at the Stadium of Light.

In fact Keane is so focused on the game, he had to be reminded that it was his birthday.

He said: "I forget all about it, I've got more important things to worry about.

"We're at the business end now. There's a good buzz around the club, we're all ready for it and what a game to start with - Spurs at home.

"The Premier League is where Sunderland belong and it's where we intend staying. It's a step up for us but ... bring it on.

"It's a big challenge for everyone at the club and we're ready for it. This is where you want to be if you want to be a top player, taking on the big boys.

"We have nothing to fear and that's what I'll tell the players. I have heard the word survival mentioned with Sunderland but I won't use that word, we hope those days are gone."

Spurs will arrive at the Stadium of Light with one of the most potent strike forces in the Premier League, on paper at least. Darren Bent, Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe are all fighting it out for a place in Martin Jol's side.

And after another summer of heavy investment the pressure is on for the team from North London to break into the "big four".

Keane said: "Traditionally, Spurs have always been a very good team to watch. They spent big this summer and they will be looking this year to maybe breaking into the top four."

Sunderland are expecting a crowd of around 45,000 for their return to the top flight.

Keane said: "It's a great one for the fans. I hope the place will be bouncing, we want that. This season will be as important as any before for the club in terms of the support that we need from the fans.

"We want a good start but I'm not going to judge our season on the next six or seven days. I hope it is a better start than last year."

Well I was now doing some reading on Sunderland's website and from all indications only Greg Halford is to undergo late fitness test. If he fails to recover then Dean Whitehead is favourite for the right back position. Craig Gordon is set to make his debut and CARLOS EDWARDS IS FIT TO PLAY. So we will see what Keane starting 11 looks like tommorow. CHEERS!!!!

Our regular pre-match assessments of our opponents with Chris Hughton starts with Sunderland as we prepare for the big kick-off on Saturday.

IF I LOOK at Sunderland's pre-season games, Roy Keane has chopped and changed the side, as every team has done.

So you tend to look at the last friendly and for Sunderland, that was against Juventus last Saturday and he went with a 4-4-2 system. At the back it was Greg Halford, Nyron Nosworthy, Paul McShane and Ross Wallace.

Halford is a full-back we know from Colchester who had a short spell at Reading while Nosworthy, who I saw a few times during his time at Gillingham where he played right-back or centre-half, has been used centrally. McShane has made a big impact in the short space of time he's been there, a very dynamic player and someone who has forced himself into the Republic of Ireland squad and team. Wallace at left-back is a player who has an ability to go forward and has played higher up the park on occasions.

In midfield you look at Carlos Edwards, Dean Whitehead, Dickson Etuhu, Liam Miller and Kieran Richardson.

Edwards, who came in from Luton, has had a period out injured in pre-season but from what we've heard, he will be fit to play. We know Whitehead well after he scored a fabulous goal at White Hart Lane a couple of seasons ago and Etuhu is a physical player signed from Preston who can also drive forward.

Everyone knows Richardson, a player they've acquired from Manchester United. He can play wide on the left or central and in him, Sunderland have a player with real quality on the ball.

They have options up front with Anthony Stokes, who did well at Falkirk last season, Daryl Murphy and Michael Chopra, who they signed from Newcastle. That's not even mentioning Stern John and Dwight Yorke, who has played more in midfield of late.

There will be a big crowd, great excitement and I would expect Sunderland to come flying out of the traps.

Robbie Keane said it was not hard to detect the managerial credentials of his namesake and Sunderland boss Roy during the former Republic of Ireland captain's playing days.

The ex-Manchester United midfield enforcer took over at the Stadium of Light at the end of August last year with the team on a pretty low ebb having lost five out of their first six games but the more senior Keane, in his first management post, drove the Black Cats to the top of the table and the Championship title.

"Oh yes, anyone could see it, he had and has all the credentials to be a top manager," said Robbie on his old Republic teammate. "He has already proved something with winning the Championship after taking over when Sunderland were at the bottom end. It was remarkable and full credit to them.

"When I was playing with him he had an aura about him and the respect of all the players," added Robbie, who expects a big test in the seasonal opener.

"Obviously it is a massive occasion for them with having just been promoted to the Premier League with Roy in charge. It will be a tough game as it always is against a newly promoted side, especially with it being up there with the fans who really do get behind them.

"It will be a different experience for some of the new lads who will never have witnessed it before and it will be a great experience for them in their first game. It is one we are looking to get a good win in after a strong pre-season."

From our own perspective, pre-season has gone according to plan with seven wins from as many games. Robbie is now looking for the winning run to continue into the new campaign.

"It has been good, but the most important thing in pre-season is your fitness and getting yourself ready for the start of the season. You do want to win the games though, to get that winning mentality and in the last three pre-seasons now it has gone well for us.

"It is important now to bring that into the season.

"It has gone the way we've wanted but, as a player, we just want to get on with it now - the real stuff, which is the Premier League. We are looking forward to Saturday's game and all the players are raring to go."

Tottenham test for Keano's Sunderland

Sunderland manager Roy Keane believes the lessons he has learned from some of the greatest managers in British football history will stand him in good stead as he prepares to embark on his debut season in a Premier League dugout.

Keane will lead his team out for Saturday's Stadium of Light clash with Tottenham clearly treasuring the experience gained during his prestigious career under the likes of Brian Clough and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane said: 'I hope I have learned something from all the managers I have played under, not just at Manchester United but also Brian Clough and those I played under when I was 10 or 11 years of age.

'Hopefully all the experience will help me but only time will tell. Even the top managers make mistakes and I made a few last year. But I'd like to think that I'm a quick learner.'

Keane hopes to have club record signing Craig Gordon in goal for the Black Cats' Premier League return after the Scot sealed his big-money move to Wearside this week.

The Sunderland boss has already developed some of the intractable character traits renowned of his mentors.

He is adamant that the word 'survival' is one which should be banned from the club's training ground this year.

'What is survival?' added Keane. '15th? 16th? 17th? We did okay last year but we have achieved nothing at this club. We want to build on it now and hopefully be a success for many years to come.

'The Premiership is full of people whom I have the utmost respect for. People who have been successful not just for one season but for years and years.

'The sign of a top player or manager is one who can do it consistently. That is how you gauge if somebody has been a success in life and it is a massive challenge for us all.'

Keane expects Gordon to be fit to make his top-flight debut but he has doubts over full-back Greg Halford, who faces a late test on a hamstring injury, with youngster Michael Kay standing by to replace him.

Despite his hectic summer transfer activity which continued yesterday with the signing of Cork City striker Roy O'Donovan, Keane will kick off the new season with an eye on more reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Keane's interest in Tottenham striker Mido continues and he added: 'I'd like to think we can get two more players in before the transfer window (closes) and we are working hard to get them in.'

The Black Cats' dismal start to their previous campaign still weighs heavy on the mind of Keane, who rescued them after four consecutive defeats to ultimately steer them to the Championship title.

Another such dismal start would surely have graver consequences in the more rarefied air of the Premier League, and Keane acknowledges the importance of preventing recent history from repeating itself.

'It is important we remain calm and focused,' added Keane. 'We deserve to be in the Premiership and hopefully we are going to make our mark on it.

'There is definitely a buzz around the place and we're all ready for a game which won't make or break our season, but I think it is very important we made a good start.

'For the last two or three seasons we have had a disappointing start to the season so we want to get off to a good one. We hope the new boys can come in and hit the ground running.'

Ah saw dat. If is true.....then...... :whew: :whew:

Mido would have toally disrupted the balance and team chemistry at Sunderland as he is jess too much drama, manipulative, selfish and spoilt-brat. I am relieved as I think Keano was making a mistake.......or maybe Keano was jess bluffing to make Boro bleed out all dey funds on a higher bid for Mido

Sky Sports moved the match clock from the top left corner of the screen to the bottom left corner.

Spurs fans: "Your support, your support, your support is f*cking sh*t. Your support is f*cking sh*t"...I disagree...

Spurs generally dominating so far...Malbranque was 1-on-1 with the keeper, but was offside....Richardson took the worst corner I've ever seen...the ball hit the corner flag on the other side...

Sunderland settling down a bit now...

Yorke doing well.
Edwards really struggling with the pace of the game.

I don't see that at all,he's actually having a pretty decent game, what I would say is if the rest of those guys would pass the f**king ball to him on time,he'll be more effective...........

Murphy should have scored for Sunderland...Carlos got the rebound and tried to square it into the area, but no one got on the end of it..

Edwards just got a free kick just outside the area....Richardson sh*t it up...

Yorke definitely more involved now...

You know how everybody talkin up Spurs to break into the top four?! Aint goin to happen. They may have bought some players but de still relying on their shithound midfielders and link men like Jenas, Malbranque, #4 Zacora?, etc, to provide service. Very inconsistent service at that! None of them will get any better from last year. Plus most of them were are rejects from other teams. The players they buy were not to improve their midfied but up front. What I see from Spurs last year is most of the time they did not play with no heart or smarts. Yuh can't buy heart, and smarts no matter how much talent you may posses as a player. Do get meh wrong they have some players with talent, smarts and heart but not enough to trouble the big four. How all yuh like them apples?!
United all dey way! Go Sunderland! Sorry all yuh have that inconsistent shithound Richardson!

First Half Report....

We Boys first....  Yorke is playing a superior passing game. Yorke Defence and movement is controlling de midfield right now.  He is holding up de ball well and making dem midfield splitting passes... all in all having a good game so far.
Carlos Edwards looks like a man who just coming back from a injury... like how Eto was looking when he just come back. He had a couple bad passes and has yet to make a decisive run up de flank but yuh could still see flashes of brilliance and he seems to be settling down the more the game progresses. I suspect he a little caught between "should i just defend" and " I is de Big Carlos Edwards and this is My Ball"  Roy Keane will fix dat half time I suspect. De rest of Sunderland lookin ok. They have been some bad passing and miscommunication but they are holding their own against a shell-schocked Spurs. I suspect spurs kinda underated their opponents a little and almost paid for it on a couple occassions. Truth be told... Sunderland should be up by 1 or 2 goals right now. They do have a knock and de backline, though sometimes shakey, is receiving and passing out of defence ok. Richardson and Carlos must get involved to stretch Spurs a little. Sunderland can win this game if they keep their cool and let de ball do de work.   Look for Carlos to have a good second half because he is de Big Carlos Edwards and it look like Spurs watch some video on him because everytime a spurs man facing Carlos they want to get a little fancy schmancy like if to say...  "I could do some of dat shit you does be doing too"...

Edwards getting more of the ball now, but his distribution hasn't been very good to be honest. His corners also haven't been penetrating enough...

The game turning into a run and gun affair now....end to end stuff...

Defoe is coming on for Berbatov. WHAT??! I don't understand this at all, but say what, Martin Jol knows what he's doing...

Well done Sunlun!!!!    :applause: :applause: :applause:
Plenty expensive, intimidating and hyped up firepower in the Tottenham side (Berbatov, Bent, Defoe, Keane blah blah) and Sunlun well handle dey stories

Ah saw de game. Yorke was a stabilizing general in central midfield and took plenty pressure off with quick 1-touch antidotes to midfield pressure and good neat distribution, spraying passes accurately. Carlos was being responsible and passing it off when the ball was hot and not trying to dribble the very competent left back. Stokes first touch was not up to snuff and did not create the sense of danger in the box. Doh frighten, Stern-turn-inho will be back.

Keano did the right thing of taking the pressure off him by leaving him out as he needs a good positive confident environment to introduce Sternos in front of a skeptical crowd who has no belief in him at the moment. Choppos is a goal scorer and did it with 1 chance. Respect.

Keeper Gordon has good positional awareness and does not get flustered at all. Nosworthy was solid and McShane did well.

Dream start really. Home win. Beat big side. Clean sheet. Only one yellow. No injuries. Happy home crowd. Players being given a fair run with rotation guaranteed to continue to happen, especially with Kean's no-favouritism policy. The insecurity of being new to the Prem was given a massive tonic to reverse negative vibes early o'oclock. Stern will be a sub by game 4 and get a start when confidence starts to ooze all over.

Niceness

I think Elan was probably talking not from a racial standpoint, but more from the standpoint of which a Black Stalin ex. would speak...a more universal stance that many Trinis (irrespective of race) would identify with.  It's nothing official or hard and fast though.

yeah..i figured elan didn't mean race. i understand that concept from a country perspective....as in T&T is considered a 'black' nation. i hear people refer to the caribbean islands and some latin countries like that. You'll read articles about some place or the other being the first 'black nation' to accomplish this or that..and T&T falls in that category. But from an individual standpoint, or from the way elan posed the question, I def don't think Indians are considered black by most people in T&T. Same for the smaller yet recognizable populations of Syrians, Asians, Whites etc...that live in T&T. Funny though..I've learned a long time ago that my experiences growing up in T&T can be very different from my neighbor..so I should put a disclaimer on these kinds of opinions..

oh..and before I get cuss

Sunderland done win...next

From Wikipedia

"It comes from dogala, which refers to the intervarnic progeny of marriage. Some of the connotations of the word such as bastard, illegitimate and son of a whore are secondary and limited to sections of North India where the term may have originated.[2] The term itself has a puzzling connotation, for it has very limited use within the subcontinent for the purpose that it gained in the West Indies. In other words, there is no recorded use of the word other than that which the definition describes, and yet, there is little or no record of such a defined use anywhere on the continent. Furthermore, the use of the word in the West Indies as was and is only used for Afro-Indo racial hybrids, despite its origin as a word used to describe inter-caste mixing. For those who have had the experience of being called a dougla in Trinidad, such a name can be very unpleasant, as the name is derogatory and used to deride the very circumstances by which members got the name in the first place"

Yet Michael Chopra was born in Newcastle, so he's  English to me...poor guy

Post by: giggsy11 on August 11, 2007, 01:10:04 PM

It seems that it's going to be the same as last season, without Lennon there's no width and the midfield just lacks creativity away from home.

Still.....it's only the first game.

Good win Sunderland.

A fantastic start for Sunderland!  Like many others, I thought that Tottenham’s fire power would have blown away Sunderland, maybe a 3-1, 3-0 scoreline.   But looking on   with hope of winning one  point (after 56 min) and then to get 3 is fantastic.  Stern not starting was not a surprise.  Yorke played very very well: the accurate, and silky passes, tracking back to help out the defense …… excellent.  Edwards  seemed a little bit out of it; we all expect him to improve by the next game.  Murphy’s miss on his one-and-one with the keeper  showed why he is not a Grade A premiership striker.  Nosworthy is a fantastic defender.

It was simply incredible to see Yorke coming out of the tunnel and taking the pitch in the Premiership again.  Really nice to see Edward in the top flight!

I agree with you. The Wiki entry should be edited.  There is nothing derogatory about the word dougla.  Very often it is used as a term of endearment.

I always thought that when you born in T&T you are considered "black".How come indiands are not considered "black". No malice have always wondered

by black..i mean of african descent. in any case, not all Trinbagonians are black no matter how you look at it. let's really not defect from the thread any further..but i don't know a single person who considers all Trinis black

That might be so except for when yuh reach america.... Only a few ethnic groups in TnT would be considered white in America. This definetly does not apply to African, Indian or Asian descent.....  And depending on yuh percentage of mix if yuh have leh we say a little Serian or European in yuh dat does qualify as black as well. Spanish aren't considered white either so not even the cocopanyol (no malice intended) does fall under white.... but then again the Americans aren't that bright or culturally diverse...   A country like Brasil and Haiti on the other hand have a more distinct disparity (ah tink dis is a word) between their 2 ethnic groups...

You turn me right round baby right round....... (for all who saw the Mexican comedian recently)

In further disruption of the 'Christmas spirit'...I came upon this quote from Walter Rodney about an hour ago:
Quote
If a Jamaican black man tried to get a room from a landlady in London, who said “No Coloreds,” it would not impress her if he said he was West Indian . . . When a Pakistani goes to the Midlands he is as colored as a Nigerian . . . The black people of whom I speak, therefore, are non-whites—the hundreds of millions of people whose homelands are in Asia and Africa, with another few millions in the Americas.

I could live with that, I recognize that some only live to cry down some ah we players.

My beef with people sometimes is the blind support they show to some of our players...every little good they do becomes magnified, every misstep gets explained away without holding the individual accountable for their poor play.  I support all Trini footballers and have no beef with any one of them.  I also di'n pitch marbles wid none ah dem so nobody on my 'safe' list as well...and that often makes for interesting dynamics on the board...some appreciate my comments, others don't.  You cool wid me doh  :beermug:
