Aces Down Valpo, 4-0
gopurpleaces.com

After losing to number four ranked Duke and North Carolina State by only one goal last week, the Valparaiso University Crusaders found a team they couldn't keep up with on Sunday. The University of Evansville men's soccer team dominated the second half at UE's Black Beauty Field and beat the Crusaders 4-0. It was the second win of the weekend for 2-2-0 Evansville, which beat Belmont on Friday, 4-1. Valparaiso is now 1-3-0.

"We made a conscious effort to compact certain areas of the the field defensively, and I felt we did well with that today,"  said Coach Mike Jacobs. "Our defensive players are also doing a better job of coaching each other on the field. Valpo had success packing in their defense, but once we scored that first goal, it seemed to open things up for us."

Evansville broke the scoreless tie just two minutes into the second half when Ian McAuley (http://gopurpleaces.com/rosterdetail.asp?sportid=307&rosteryear=2007&id=61834&orderby=cast(number%20as%20int)) took a serve from Kieran Purcell and beat one defender and goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz to the goal for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Freshman Mike Luttrull scored his first collegiate goal at 72:02 when he took a long pass from Dan Gibson and outran the Crusaders' defense to break open for a 10-yard blast past Schwarz. Two minutes later, Dustin Awe scored his second goal of the year when he booted a loose ball 15 yards from the left side, and Stephan Minyono finished the second half dominance at 85:50 when he tucked a shot just inside the near post following passes from Tyler Hoek and Austin Schall. Defensively, the Aces were just as strong. They held Valparaiso to 10 shots, and only three on goal. Evansville put 10 of its 24 shots on goal, and also led in corner kicks by a wide margin, 8-2. The Aces play again Saturday against the University of Denver in the opening round of the UWGB Classic at Green Bay, Wis.

UNF can't hold 3-0 lead, falls on penalty kick
unfospreys.cstv.com

The University of North Florida jumped in front with three first-half goals against George Washington on Sunday afternoon, but the Ospreys couldn't make the early lead stand up, allowing GW four unaswered scores in a 4-3 overtime loss on the final day of the Lancer Invitational. Two of the Colonials goals came on penalty kicks, including Luke Wildy's game-winner 2:10 into the overtime period. The other came from Greg McKay at the 34:43 mark in the first half to slice UNF's margin to 3-1. Oscar Ortiz scored two goals for the Ospreys (1-3), and Akil DeFreitas (http://unfospreys.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/defreitas_akil00.html) added the other and an assist to give UNF its early cushion.

"It is a shame that we lost the game," UNF head coach Ray Bunch said. "Our guys really came out and played well early on. We had a lot of energy and followed our game plan perfectly. Inexperience was the difference. We have a freshman goalie (Andrew Calise) who is learning on the job, and we don't have all of our defenders on the field yet. The penalty kicks were killers today. We have had a chance to win every game we have played this year. We're going to get over the hump soon."

George Washington (3-1) outshot the Ospreys 17-10 and had seven corners to just three for UNF. DeFreitas delivered a strike off a cross from Shareef Rajkumar (http://unfospreys.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/rajkumar_shareef00.html) in the 24th minute to put UNF on the board first. Ortiz then followed with back-to-back scores on passes from DeFreitas and Adam O'Neill, respectively, to help the Ospreys take their commanding early advantage. Following McKay's score, GWU sliced the UNF advantage to 3-2 before halftime on a goal by Abimbola Pedro (34:43). In the 69th minute, Erick Perez-Segnini tied the game on a serve from George Garcia. The teams played out the clock from there and forced the extra period. DeFreitas led the Ospreys with five shots, while Ortiz had two. Andrew Calise took the decision in goal for the Ospreys, tallying five saves in 92 minutes. The Ospreys have a 10-day layoff before returning to action on Sept. 19 at Georgia Southern.

suathletics.com

Junior forward Kyle Hall (http://www.suathletics.com/roster.asp?playerid=2155&sport=173&roster=195&path=msoccer) (Toronto, Ontario) notched his first goal of the season as the Orange men’s soccer team (2-0-2) played James Madison (1-2-1) to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Sunday, Sept. 9 in its final match in the Mayor’s Cup at Elmore Field. Hall scored in the 19th minute to help the Orange extend its unbeaten streak to five games dating back to last season.

“It’s great to get off to this kind of start against the kind of teams we’re playing,” head coach Dean Foti said. “It gives us an excellent picture of where we are as we get closer to the BIG EAST season. We played another good team even today. I thought we defended well and had some chances to win it down the stretch.”

Hall’s goal came at the 18:32 mark when he finished off a pass from sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) to put the Orange in front, 1-0. Syracuse maintained its advantage until James Madison’s C.J. Sapong tied the score in the 56th minute with a goal off a rebounded shot. Syracuse controlled the tempo late in the second half and nearly won the game in regulation. The Orange registered consecutive corner kicks with a little more than 10 minutes to play. The second resulted in a header by junior forward Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) that was knocked away by James Madison goalkeeper Justin Epperson. SU’s best scoring chance came with 33 seconds left, but Schomaker’s game-winning attempt hit the post and was cleared. The Orange also recorded three shots in the second overtime, while not allowing the Dukes a look at the net, but it couldn’t notch the game-winner. SU junior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) played the entire match for the second time in three days. He made six saves in the contest to move into ninth on SU’s career saves list with 164. Hartwick captured the Mayor’s Cup outright for the 17th time on Sunday. The Hawks defeated Seton Hall, 3-0, in the tournament’s final game to win the championship. Hartwick also notched a 1-0 win against James Madison on Friday to finish the event 2-0. Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Orange will play a 4:00 p.m. match at America East foe Albany.

huntington.edu

Although much of the game was played in a steady downpour, the Foresters had no trouble taking control in the slick conditions as they routed Bluffton University 10-2 in their home opener. Although the Beavers put up the first score six minutes into the match, HU quickly answered with the equalizer and then ran away with it.  Steven McKay netted three balls for the Foresters while Andrew Wust and Marvin Martinez (http://www.huntington.edu/athletics/msoccer/0708/07player_profiles.htm#MMartinez) each added two scores.  In all, HU tallied 36 shots on goal.

“Our finishing was fantastic today.” said Coach Lawson.  “The men were striking the ball with great confidence and I'm pleased with the result.  We were able to gain momentum by taking care of the ball in very difficult weather conditions.”

Wust started the scoring for the Foresters by evening the match at 1-1 off an assist from Marc William in the 12th minute.  Kyle Brohm fed William for the go-ahead score at the 18:04 mark.  James Holliday then got in on the act with a score in the 27th minute and Martinez picked up his first goal off a Brad Kunze pass in the 31st minute.  Bluffton added its second goal at the 38:07 mark, but McKay came back with his first score three minutes later to make it a 5-2 Forester lead at intermission. HU continued to dominate in the second half with another five goals.  Aside from goals from McKay (2), Wust and Martinez, Alec Roush also got in the scoring column for the Foresters with his first goal of the season in the 78th minute. For the Foresters in net, Kevin Keske had three saves and Matt Boyer made seven stops.  With the win, HU moves to 3-1 on the season.

lindsey.edu

Lindsey Wilson College senior midfielder Ryan Stewart (http://www.lindsey.edu/sports/msoccer/2006/bios/stewart.pdf) scored three goals as the Blue Raider men’s soccer team beat visiting Union (Tenn.) University 7-0 tonight at Lindsey Wilson Park. Stewart scored the only goal of the first half at the 25:15 mark off a free kick from just outside the penalty area. Despite out-shooting the visiting Bulldogs (1-3-0) 9-3 in the first 45 minutes, Lindsey Wilson took the 1-0 lead into the  break. The No. 7-ranked Blue Raiders wasted little time doubling their lead in the second half as Stewart found the back of the net 21 seconds into the half. Stewart found an opening -- off freshman Ryan Parker’s second assist of the season -- just under the hands of Union goalkeeper Chris Lean to give Lindsey Wilson the 2-0 lead. Lindsey Wilson’s Nathaniel Jafta scored a breakaway goal at the 62:33 mark to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. Freshman Jose Espinoza led Jafta just beyond the center stripe and the junior midfielder netted his fifth goal of the season against a defenseless Lean. Stewart completed his hat trick -- becoming the third Blue Raider this season to score at least three goals in a game -- seven minutes later on an unassisted goal into bottom right corner. Stewart ended the night tied for the team lead with Jafta and freshman Jakob Rittig in goals with five this season.

Freshman reserve forward Frederick Were scored the game’s next two goals at the 70:21 and 78:46 marks. The goals were his first two career goals. Sophomore midfielder Joe Adams ended the night’s scoring in the 89th minute with his first goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Adam Howard. The seven goals tie a season-high for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson opened the season with a 7-0 win over St. Xavier (Ill.) University. Tonight’s Lindsey Wilson and Union game was the second game of the first night of the men’s KELME Classic. In the opener, Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University upset No. 19-ranked Lindenwood (Mo.) University 4-2. Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday against Lindenwood in the final night of the KELME Classic. Union and Cardinal Stritch will kick-off the night of soccer at 5 p.m. CT at Lindsey Wilson Park.

gousfbulls.com

With a 1-0 victory over Florida International in its opening game of the UConn/adidas Classic Friday afternoon, the University of South Florida men's soccer team continued its fast start and moved to 3-0-0 on the season. In direct correlation with the team's success, junior midfielder Kevon Neaves (http://admin.xosn.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=7700&ATCLID=216878) is also enjoying an impressive 2007 season so far.  Neaves scored the game-winning goal in the 36th minute from 30 yards out off of a feed from senior Simon Schoendorf to provide the Bulls with all the offense they would need.

The goal was Neaves' third of the year as he extends his team-lead in points to eight thus far.  The Petit Valley, Trinidad, native has garnered at least one point in each of the Bulls three games this year. For Schoendorf, the assist was his third of the year.  The midfielder also notched two shots on goal in the contest. Overall, the Bulls nearly doubled the Golden Panthers (0-2-1) in shots, tallying 13 to FIU's seven, with seven of those for USF on frame compared to three for FIU. Keeper Diego Restrepo earned his second-straight shutout with the victory and the third win of his collegiate career. "It was nice to get our second shutout of the year," said head coach George Kiefer.  "We had a lot of good chances to get a second goal, but we'll take this win in preparation for South Carolina tomorrow.  Both USC and FIU are good teams."

The Bulls have notched seven goals in the three games played, compared to only two for their opponents.  The team has also out-shot its foes 47-29. USF will see its first ranked opponent tomorrow when it faces No. 15 (NSCAA/adidas) South Carolina at 4 p.m. in the second  and final game of the tournament.  The Gamecocks bring a 2-0-0 record into the weekend, including a season-opening double-overtime win against No. 12 Clemson.  USC will battle tournament host and No. 6/14 UConn Friday night at 7 p.m.

Bishop gets Lincoln back on track
lincoln.edu

Kirk Bishop, Theon Francis (http://www.lincoln.edu/athletics/msoccer/theon831.html), Peter Jarbo and John Oluwole made sure the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team enjoyed a spectacular 2007 home debut. Bishop, Jarbo and Francis combined for seven goals as Lincoln defeated Penn State-Delaware County, 8-0, Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, Lincoln evened its overall record at 1-1. Jarbo, who has scored 46 career goals, notched his seventh career hat-trick as Lincoln scored six goals after intermission to defeat PSU-Delco for the second consecutive year. Francis scored two goals and added an assist. Bishop, who scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute, also tallied a pair of goals for the Lions. Also scoring his first career goal for Lincoln was freshman Ouloide Yannick Goue. For Bishop, it was a wonderful return to the soccer field for the junior, who was a member of Lincoln’s 4 x 800-meter relay team during his freshman and sophomore seasons. A business administration major, Bishop is playing soccer for the first time since he left his native Guyana five years ago. “This win feels real good because we lost the first game (at Moravian on Saturday afternoon) and I just wanted to do something to contribute a win for the team,” Bishop said. “We were trying to get ahead and get a cushion and relax. We wanted to force the tempo. It’s a good start and I am not really in shape and I just need to get back in form.”

While Bishop handled the goal scoring chores, Oluwole made sure nothing got past him. Playing for the Lions after a two-year absence, Oluwole stopped eight shots for the second consecutive game. In two games, Oluwole, has saved 16 out of 17 shots. Behind the defensive hard work of seniors Kamah Dawana and Jerrell Hooker (http://www.lincoln.edu/athletics/msoccer/jhooker831.html), Lincoln kept Penn State-Delco’s scoring chances to a minimum. Also for the Lions, sophomore Alexander McNeil contributed an assist on Jarbo’s second goal of the game. Turning in stellar efforts for Lincoln were Kouadioyo Eric-Marc, Kareem Morance-Leid, Emmanuel Cooper and Daniel Pierre (http://www.lincoln.edu/athletics/msoccer/pierre831.html). Jarbo scored all three of his goals in the final 15 minutes of the game. The Lions put the game away when they opened the second half by scoring three times in a three-minute period. Francis sandwiched two goals around Bishop’s second goal. “On my second goal, Theon had the ball and he lost it and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Bishop said. Lincoln returns to action when it travels to Rowan University Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Lions will try to avenge last year’s 7-1 loss to Rowan.

Seth Addison scored twice as Newberry College rolled over Brevard College 5-0 in NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer action Wednesday afternoon. Four different Indians scored as Newberry returned to its high scoring ways.  After two games in which the Indians scored just one goal, Newberry came out firing early against the Tornados. Addison (Accra, Ghana) started the scoring for the Indians when he took a throw in from Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and headed it off both the goalie and the cross bar for his fifth goal of the season in the fourth minute.  Abbott would get involved in another goal in the 29th minute when he sent a pass into the box for Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) who settled it with his chest before hitting a spinning kick past the goalie into the top left corner of the goal. The goal was Ogunseye’s sixth of the season. The Indians continued to put on the pressure, out shooting the Tornados 12-3 in the first half, but they were unable to convert going into the half still up just 2-0.

Newberry continued its offensive attack in the second half, scoring again in the 53rd minute to take a 3-0 lead. Midfielder  Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) received a pass from Addison and went on a run up the right side before firing a shot from 15 yards out past the goalie in the left side of the net. The goal was the first of the sophomore’s collegiate career.

Just six minutes later freshman Jovan Rochford (http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=1290) (Arima, Trinidad) scored his first collegiate goal when he found some space in the middle of the field and rocketed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. Newberry capped its scoring in the 63rd minute when Addison took a pass from midfielder Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) and beat both his defender and the goalie before depositing the ball into the net for his second goal of the game. The Newberry offense was relentless as the Indians took 23 shots and had 12 corner kicks in the game. Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) was never really challenged on his way to a second straight shutout. The Tornados managed just three shots on goal and none from close range. The shutout was Dieterich’s fourth of his career which ties him with Bryan Linn for first place all time in the Newberry record books. He also ties the record for shutouts in a season with two. Addison’s five point day ties him with Ogunseye for the team lead with 13 points. Both Ogunseye and Addison have six goals and one assist on the season. Ogunseye’s goal gives him 51 career points which moves him past Jason Wiggins, who had 49 career points, into sole possession of third place in the Newberry record books. The Indians' next game is on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Harrogate, Tenn., to open up conference play against Lincoln Memorial. The game should be a good test for Newberry as the Railsplitters began the year ranked fifth in the country but have fallen out of the top 25 after starting the year 2-2.
