Malick meets Signal in national final.

Malick Senior Comprehensive took away the BG T&T Girls Trinidad Inter-Col title away from St Augustine with a 1-0 win yesterday at the St Mary’s ground, Serpentine Road, St Clair.
It was sweet revenge for Malick, whose boys’ team went under to St Augustine 2-1 less than 24 hours before in the RBTT Inter-col quarterfinal.
The match was played under a brilliant blue sky atop a lush green, but slightly overgrown, pitch. The ambience was lost on the players, both teams played with great intensity and passion. Skilful players found the going difficult on the thick, uneven surface.
Malick had been plagued by injuries all season but had its full compliment of players for this encounter. St Augustine was without key players, Avanell Isaac and Annalis Cummings for the second consecutive match, the duo are away on national Under-23 duty.
Malick had been beaten by “Gustine” twice this season, but it seemed intent on overturning those results. The girls from Malick came out to play and took the fight to their opponents. This pressure led to the goal by Jimelle James. The score remained 1-0 at half time.
St Augustine threw everything it had at Malick in the second half. Captain Patrice Bideshi and Janelle Hinds worked well in tandem down the right flank.
However every attack was foiled. The goalkeeper was well defended by Jamelliah Layne especially, who used her long frame to dominate all aerial crosses. Jinnell Kissoon was ineffective in the face of physical play from the Malick midfielders.
The “Green Machine” sputtered to its first loss of the season and surrendered its Inter-Col titles. St Augustine was also had the defending national crown.
The match coach Stephen Smart was very pleased with the result.
“The girls played with a lot of heart,” he said.
He felt his team competed well and came together at the right time to earn the championship.
Malick last won the national title in 2004. A new Inter-Col champion will be crowned though, when Malick faces Signal Hill in the national final to be played next week at a venue to be announced.

Naps beat Carapichaima on penalties.

Naparima College squeezed past Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive 4-3 on penalties yesterday in the RBTT Inter-Col quarterfinal at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. The match had ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. Carapichaima took a shock lead in the third minute. The southern champion rallied to level scores 1-1 before the interval. In the second period both sides created chances. But it was Shannon Winchester who broke the deadlock with a wicked long range drive in the 58th minute, 2-1 Naps.
Carapichaima, however fought back, it attacked Naparima relentlessly. In the 86th minute, it equalised from a free-kick. The scores remained tied through the end of regulation time. Yet another Inter-Col match went to extra time.
With neither team able to score in twenty minutes of extra-time, penalty kicks were needed. “Naps” held its nerve to win 4-3. Naparima now progresses to meet St Augustine Senior Comprehensive next Wednesday in the national RBTT Inter-Col semifinal.
