Francisco Maturana
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
 Career

[edit] As a Player
Born in Quibdó,Chocó, Francisco Maturana moved with his family at an early age to the city of Medellín. Here he played professional soccer while attending the University of Antioquia where he later obtained a degree in Dentistry. He began his professional career in 1970 at Atlético Nacional where he became a starting defender until 1980. During his time in Atlético Nacional he won two Colombian League Championships in 1973 and 1976. In 1981 he transferred to Atlético Bucaramanga and also played 6 matches with the Colombian National Team during the qulifying matches for the 1982 World Cup. In 1982 he played his last year with Deportes Tolima until he retired at the end of the season.

[edit] As a Manager
By motivation from Uruguyans Aníbal Ruíz and Luis Cubilla, he started managing Colombian team Once Caldas in 1986. The following year the Colombia Soccer Federation hired him to manage the national team's youth squad and then was quickly promoted to manage the Senior Squad to compete in the 1987 Copa America where they reached third place by beating the host Argentina. During this time, he was also hired to manage his former team Atlético Nacional. Then in 1989 he had his most successful year in his career. He led Atlético Nacional, composed of many Colombian legends, to win the Copa Libertadores for the first time for any Colombian club. Using Atlético Nacional players as a base for the National Team, he qualified the team to the 1990 World Cup after 28 years of absence. In December, he lost the Intercontinental Cup to AC Milan at the last minute of overtime. An upset to what would have been the perfect season. The following year he lead Colombia to its best perfermance in World Cup competition by reaching the second round and losing to Cameroon.

After the World Cup, he was hired as coach of Spain's Real Valladolid. In 1993 he was voted as the South American coach of the year by El Pais and he was ranked third in Spanish Newspaper Marca's list of the worlds greatest managers.

He returned to Colombia in 1992. and got his team América de Cali champion of Colombia. In 1993 he got Colombia qualified for a second time in a row to a World Cup, with a historic triumph over Argentina in Buenos Aires by 5-0. That score made Colombia a surprising favorite for the 1994 World Cup, but the performance there was disappointing, as the team was eliminated in the first round, being defeated by such teams as the United States and Romania.

He had later a brief stint as coach of Atlético Madrid and in 1995 he was hired as the trainer of Ecuador National Football Team. After failing to get Ecuador qualified for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he returned to Colombia to coach Millonarios.

In 1999 he briefly coached Costa Rica, and in 2000 he also coached for a few months Peru. He would later return to coach Colombia for the 2001 Copa América, winning it for the first time. His latest jobs as a coach would include Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, where he won the domestic league and the Asian Champions League and a new stint for Colombia and Argentina's Colón de Santa Fe.

Francisco Maturana is considered to be one of the greatest South American coaches of all time and a legend of the Colombian game.

He worked for FIFA as a technical adviser where he has hold various coaching seminars around the world with the likes of Fabio Capello and Cesar Menotti.

In April of 2007 Maturana accepted an offer from Argentine Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. He directed his first game on April 22, 2007, the derby against Estudiantes de La Plata. In August of 2007 Maturana ended his relationship with Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata

Ah know that but de way dey was talking it wasn't supposed to happen before  6 months or so, not next week. Look like Maturana was eager. Anyway, better him than ah novice John Barnes, and better sooner than later.

Story on wim - since he has been suspended, he has not contacted the TTFF in any way. Warner said in his personal opinion, wim will not be back, as the man showing nothing that he want the job back. warner said its still possible if he wanted to come back, but very improbable, as he would have to "rebrand" himself and his relationship with the ttff.

New coach says he is very excited on this new challenge.

warner said he was given a shortlist of available coaches by fifa and maturano was the best, so he went with him.
john barnes and brian hodgson i think were also on the list.
wonder how come he aint say mourninho was available.

Vranes sounds real excited to be back.

warner even make a joke and say that now vranes is now more fluent than him (warner) in english...talking about vranes love affair with T&T.

warner said on the 16-17 jan, for some big announcement for ttff centennial celebrations, they will announce future friendlies for this year against opposition that will "blow our mind"

A journalist start to ask him about the money problems, and warner jump up and shout "money problems?!" "who have money problem?!"
that man is real kicks yes.
he say the only money problem is from wim as he is now suspended and has put himself in that situation.

also made announcements that the sunderland duo, stern, samuel, are recalled for ash wednesday for the guadelupe game at the oval.
seems like blacklist getting swept under the carpet.
warner also said that these were the players wim had on his agenda to recall for the new year, so they going with that...

Good credits one thing of sure Jack must have gotten him for cheap, on another note once again we about to change our style of play. Personally I always taught we should play a more south American style of play with mix of the British game this is the way we have played for very long time also our players are better suited for this that style of play, we just need to perfect it. Aldo it will be interesting to see what style the coach adopts

he say the only money problem is from wim as he is now suspended and has put himself in that situation.

also made announcements that the sunderland duo, stern, samuel, are recalled for ash wednesday for the guadelupe game at the oval.
seems like blacklist getting swept under the carpet.
warner also said that these were the players wim had on his agenda to recall for the new year, so they going with that...

What is the reason for the Vranes reference in the article?  Did I miss something?  It seems out of comtext.  What does it mean that "Vranes sounds excited to be back?"  Can someome enlighten me?

bss he is the under 20  coach like they cannot find anyone better??? well at least he would not be biased ...

I have always admired Maturana from his days with Colombia. He studied at Milan under Sacchi, so he is well rounded. Good choice for T&T, he should get the best out of the players. He has been working with FIFA for some time now and has not actually coached for quite a while. Lets wish him well.

Apparently no....he spoke through an interpreter......

The "translator" was actually Keith Lok Loy.  I wonder who else could speak spanish....maybe Anton?  That would put him in a favourable position as Assistant.

Vranes knows about us quite well...coach us...coach against us (sucessfully I hadda say).  Is how many years now since he first came down here...mustbe close to or more than 8 years?

De first time Vranes coach T&T was 1994. He was even Joe Public's coach for a couple of years.

Whether the man (Maturano) can speak English well or not is hardly relevant.  Capello the new England coach can't speak English and that is not going to prevent him from doing a good job.  I am sure he has coached a lot of players who spoke a language other than Spanish.  We shall see.

where did the racist talk come from with Wim? My understanding from someone on the coaching staff, is that with the Nakid issue, Wim stood up for the young waitress, when Nakid was rude. So where has he demonstrated that he is a racist.
The general talk in T&T was that he was asking hard questions on behalf of the players who did not get paid. He has gone on record as stating that the Federation should deliver. Some members of the TTFF took exception, and this is the real reason behind the suspension.

This is believable, because Jack actually hint at that when he said that "Wim needed to evaluate whether or not he could work with the TTFF." Dais wha I believe...Wim start getting more frustrated and start to talk up.

Then he and Lincoln come to blows, or at least he pelt some cuff, which was really a separate issue, but it give Jack and dem ah opening to relieve his troublemaking ass.

Me eh so sure 'bout de racist talk but ah hear this was when he and Nakhid was having they cussout and he make some unkind reference to middle eastern people or something so in cussing Nakhid. So rumour has it so me tell it! I wasn' deh!

De ting is....Wim wrong...even doh he right.  A coach CANNOT get involved in matters between players and Federation.  Dat and de Lincoln incident is what give TTFF de ammo to handle he de way dey eventually did.

That said, is interestin to hear de comments by people who have a lot of respect in de football community.  Wim's problem is that he couldn't be bought and refused to play "the game".  Yuh really cyah blame he doh.  Months of not gettin paid, havin always to deal with a squad that is less than the best players eligible to represent the country, assistants not getting paid etc obviously took a toll.

Doh feel too sorry fuh he doh.  Bet yuh botom dollar de TTFF will encounter a lawsuit of some sorts and besides...Beenie will hire him in a hearbeat or set him up somewhere.

Good luck Wim.  Yuh never get a fair shake regardless of whether peeps feel yuh was qualified or not for de position.  In dat regard, yuh eh get any different treatment dan 99% of people who have dealins wit TTFF and Jack Warner in particular.

Yuh know how long I waiting to hear this other version or twist to de Wim story. Well done Observer for exploring this. I eh say is true but it is what I expected. I find Maturana impressive but that doesn't mean we have to leave wrongdoings unaddressed and sweep it under the carpet as we fete over a new story. Lincoln's behaviour is worrying me these days and I am going to be more careful about rating him up as a role model. Being a yes man to Jackula is cause for concern ... too say the least.

Dreamer, I am with you all the way on this one!  I question the motives and self-respect of the entire TTFF and other football officials who simply bow to every idiotic and shameful things that JW does, simply because he has the abiity to line evrybody's pocket with money.  Nobody has stood up to disagree, make alternate suggestions, or challenge stupid policies.  Certainly he sometimes makes the right moves.  But often it is after chaotic, vindictive, and hateful decisions that embarass us as Trinidadians and Tobagonins and make us the laughingstock of the CONCACAF community.  Maturana is a good coach and hopefully will do well with our players and bring the much deserved respect back to our players.  But along the way another human being (Wim in this case) is maligned, stomped on and humiliated.  When will that stop?  Not until our officials have some guts to stop being yesmen and our goverment and people step up to the plate and support football without depending on JW's dollars to do so.  That is my take.  Howerver, no matter what, I am a Soca Warrior supporter till I die because I support the players, not JW and the TTFF.

Yuh no palos while I concur on most of what you said is it possible that he just was not liked,by the same  usual suspects, because here comes the colombian coach and all the players are being made available to him,I've been thought over the years that there's two sides to a story and I see the difficulty in anyone believing the TTFF don't get me wrong, and it may not be so much as playing the game or can't be bought but maybe he was bought and became greedy, also the part about not being paid for six months,I don't know if I believe that, god knows on my job if my boss ent pay me for one month, that's one month to long,I looking for another job..............
