Warriors to battle on without Sunderland duo.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF Media).

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Footballers arrived in Kingston just around 2pm on Monday for their upcoming friendly international against Jamaica at the National Stadium here on Wednesday night. Head coach Francisco Maturana and captain Aurtis Whitley led the rest of the team in an evening training session at Tivoli Gardens and will have a final rehearsal at the match venue on Tuesday evening for the game which is being highly anticipated in reggae land.

Head coach of the Jamaican team Rene Simoes told the Jamaican media that he was going all out in the encounter which over the years has been billed as one where bragging rights is a major priority. The Jamaicans qualified for the 1998 World Cup and T&T performed a similar feat in 2006. The last time these two teams met, Jamaica came away 2-1 winners in a Digicel Cup encounter in 2004. Jamaica also won the two previous World Cup qualifying meetings 1-0 and 2-1. Simoes was at the helm of the T&T team in the second encounter played at the Queen’s Park Oval.

With Jamaica having the majority of its heavyweights for Wednesday’s game, T&T suffered a double blow with the news that both Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards would not be joining the squad for the match. The Sunderland medical staff, in communication with T&T team Doctor Terrence Babwah and team administrator David Muhammad explained Jones as still recovering from a virus and was unfit to travel. However Sunderland physiotherapist Peter Friar, in a letter to the T&T team management, stated that Edwards suffered a groin problem in training on Friday. However he was declared fit and the club felt he was too much of a key player to leave out. He managed to play 67 minutes for Sunderland in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Friar said Edwards was still experiencing tightness in the groin and his hip was impinging in its adducted/medial rotation quadrant. Babwah, as was customary in such matters, requested an MRI of the injury as well as an independent examination. As has occurred in the past, a medical doctor in Birmingham has been used by the TTFF for similar cases with players during the 2006 World Cup qualification. However Sunderland stated that it was unnecessary for Edwards to undergo the MRI as well as get an independent assessment.

According to Muhammad, Friad relayed that the MRI scan possibly would not show any relevant hip pathology which he (Friar) was referring to in his letter, but rather pick up only a minor soft tissue lesion. Babwah recalled Jones himself undergoing an independent assessment by the same Birmingham-based doctor prior to the match in 2005 before returning to Port of Spain to represent T&T.

A FIFA ruling states that in such instances, the country’s governing body can enforce action whereby the player does not take part in training or in a match over a five-day period following the date of the match he was requested to be released for. The TTFF has gone ahead with that request through FIFA and both players will not be eligible to play for Sunderland in Saturday’s game against West Ham United. T&T head coach Francisco Maturana did admit his disappointment on not having Jones and Edwards available.

“It is sad that they will not be here because they are a very big part of the plans for the country just as they are for their club. We don’t get to have players every week like the clubs which is why it was important for them to be available for this game. Player selection is all part of planning for international games,” Maturana told TTFF Media on Monday.

“But we hope they recover well and we will not let that hold us down. We have other players here and they will have to play their game and we will prepare for Wednesday’s game.”

Whitley said his troops will soldier on. “It’s disappointing that both Carlos and Jonesy will not be here but we are here to play Jamaica and we will go play them and try our best to get a good result. We will not let that hold us back,” he added.

“The game will be a tough one. We know Jamaica always wants to beat Trinidad especially in football and the public will come out for this one but it will be a good test for us and I think we will be able to pull out the stops and go for something good."

Charleston Battery striker Randi Patterson, fresh from scoring a double over Toronto FC on the weekend, joined the team on Monday in Kingston and Jan Michael Williams and striker Darryl Roberts were scheduled to arrive later that day. Defender Osei Telesford and Collin Samuel will join the team at the Pegasus Hotel on Tuesday. Kick off at is 7pm (8pm T&T Time).

So no excuses should be made about the make-up of either team.
Whenever Jamaica and T&T face-off it should be the best 11 tackling each other. Whether for a championship or bragging rights.

Oh! T&T will be leaving "The Office" with a 3-nil whipping. ;D

Ah knnow that bragging rights are important to us fans, and I would love to win the game.  But the bragging rights I really want is when we the Soca Warriors beat them the Reggae Boys in the qualifiers and go to a second consecutive WC 2010, while they stay home.  NOW GO DO THE JOB IN THE OFFICE.

I find allyuh sounding real confident. With all the mess T&T went through over the 18 months it might be well warranted. But try to remember to throw out the form book whenever these teams meet.

Only way Keane getting dem for Saturday now is if he jet them down to Kingston or grovel.

I still believe this team we sending can make this a contest...I feel they will play with confidence and that is a big thing at this stage for those young players.

Whitley, Roberts and Samuel are the only ones on this team that could hold a full team starting spot. Unlike under Wim this is not just PFL journeymen getting a bligh. This is a great test for the youth.

I looking for Whitley to stamp some authority on this game, and for Hyland and especially Daniel to start playing "big man" football like
Palos and dem saying he capable of. A 4-5-1 would free him up more but say what.

And for that backline to continue the tactical awareness and stinginess like against El Salvador.

Small Mag that line-up look real accurate.

Sunderland to battle on without Warrior Duo

De defense against El Slvador wasn't that great eh....they had some gaps and openings a faster, stronger team could exploit so they better step up against Jamaica (assuming they play better than El Salvador...big assumption but they at home)

This is a good test for these guys, win, lose or draw. I prefered that KJ and Carlos stay with Sunderland and finish up the season. They need to help Sunderland from relegation. We will have them when the season finished. That is when the TTFF should arrange international friendlies against tougher teams. Also bring back Birchal!!!

Maybe so, but it's the only remedy a national federation has at it's disposal to keep clubs (and players) honest.

Disappointing development regardless.

One thing is for sure though, the cllub will only realise for svhedule dates now.  Strange that Jamacia took a very different line with gardner.

Good luck with the game on wednesday anyway.

Jeez an ages.....

Even though i in agreement with most that the pair should have been left out in the first place. Sunderland have no right to take this kind of position. All these claims come off as being very constructed.

The discourse between the the two medical staffs have the folks on the Sunderland end coming off as very dismissive and now they will pay the price.

Unfortunately the TTFF have to take a stance on this one and ban the two for next Saturday's game. Maturana is right that clubs get to work with their players for weeks on end and International coaching staffs are very restricted with respect to training hours with these players. Everybody coaching staff does get paid to get results. When June come and key players not in sync people right here in dis forum go be crying down Maturana for poor preparation.

If Sunderland upset about the game then they should go to FIFA not the TTFF as this game is scheduled on a FIFA designated date for an international match.

Ban d two of them if the clubs claim they injured. Let them rest it up for the next week so everybody go be "fit and ready" for the rest of the club and international season. Roberts included as well.

Dis have me real cross, nuttin could go smooth when it come to T&T football.

Title: Re: Warriors to battle on without Sunderland duo.
Post by: kev on March 25, 2008, 07:05:28 AM

It might even help if T&T managed to get the players there is a decent timeframe and in some sort of condition to train.  With travel arrangements like below, how much time is anybody going to have and what condition are the players likely to be in.  I think Mickey Mouse would even be embarassed.

"Instead, the players will endure an arduous journey of more than 15 hours. The players will fly from Manchester, changing planes at London and Miami, before flying on to Jamaica."

'Trinis' aiming for victory

Aurtis Whitely, captain of the Trinidad and Tobago senior football team, is very optimistic that his side can beat Jamaica in their friendly international game tomorrow at the National Stadium.

Whitley told The Gleaner in an interview following his team's arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday that, despite its youthfulness, the players are ready and rearing to go.

"We are very confident at the moment," said Whitely. "We just defeated El Salvador in our last friendly game and so coming into this game we are going to try our best and make sure that when we go out there, we play to the best of our abilities and enjoy the game.

"This team is still a very young team. However, we are going to put our best foot forward and see how best we can win this friendly game."

Hard to beat at home

Whitely also noted that he is aware of the danger the Reggae Boyz possess and that they are very hard to beat at home.

"We know that they are a strong team," Whitely pointed out. "It's going to be hard to beat the Jamaicans at home, but God is great so we are just going out there to play the game and put our faith in the Lord."

In 30 games between the teams so far, the edge belongs to the Reggae Boyz who have won 13 games, with 11 going to the Soca Warriors. Six have ended in draws.

Trinidad and Tobago are yet to win an away game against Jamaica.

Despite this, Whitely said: "Our supporters here can expect a wonderful game from us because we come here to play football and we are not going to lie down and let them beat us."

Meanwhile, two of Trinidad and Tobago's top players, the Sunderland pair of giant forward Kenwyne Jones and midfielder Carlos Edwards, did not arrive with the team and will not take part in the contest.

Word from the team is that Jones is sick and Edwards has a groin injury.

Pon a serious note, that Trini team look already defeated. Just look at their faces and how they are training. They don't look confident at all. Look like spirits are low but we'll see the outcome.

A relatively new beginning - let TTFF play dey rangling now..is just a front, wheter rite or rong, they still doh do shiite...who pay the players, who organize games, who hire coach, who developin players and football...as much as ppl opinions, is Jack, government, PFL an a few supporters....oh wait, they getting geared for 2010...ah forget

It's to accommodate them. It gives them the feeling that they're still training in T&T.
