Kevin Nelson signs with NE Stars.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague).

Former Australian based Tobago born forward Kevin Nelson has joined ailing North East Stars this week. Nelson back in Trinidad after trial in Vietnam with V League club Hoang Anh Gia Lai has agreed to join the Sangre Grande based club until the end of this season.

Ironically, North East Stars will be against Nelson’s former club W Connection on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium from 5pm and he hopes to get the nod to play against his former employers.

“I’m hoping to be in the team against Connection,” said Nelson. “I have been training with North East Stars for the past nine days and I’m sure the coach (Clint Marcelle) is impressed with me. I’m sure he knows it as well as me that I can be a great addition against Connection.”

Nelson, failed to secure an extension on his contract with the Savonetta Boys after 2007. Nelson spent the 2008 pre-season with Macoya based Joe public. He said it was a personal agreement that helped him keep fit as his efforts was to secure a foreign contract in Vietnam which never materialised for reasons off the field.

Nelson explained that the politics in Vietnamese football is more than the public understands. Nelson was handled by his Vietnamese agent who explained to him that it was a matter of who could pay the highest signing fee to the coach and manager of the Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

Nelson started off his career with San Juan Jabloteh and went on to play in Venezuela (Caracas FC ), Canada (Ottawa Wizard) and Australia (South Melborne) before joining W connection last season.

Nelson started in North East Stars practice match against Super League club Harlem Strikers on Saturday and scored one goal in his team’s 4-1 win.

“I’m looking forward to scoring goals with North East Stars. I have been scoring goals throughout my career and I’m just looking to do the same for North East.

North East Stars are at the bottom of the table with just 3 points after five matches which led to the axing of coach Kenwick Elie. His replacement is former European based forward Clint Marcelle, formerly attached to W Connection as assistant coach to Stuart Charles Fevrier. Marcelle is left with the task of guiding NE Stars out of the bottom and in a respectable position in the League.

Marcelle had four players vying for two places in his team’s pro roster and decided on Kevin Nelson and defender Sterling Arjoon. Arjoon, a former Caledonia AIA right wingback said that lack of playing time with the Stallions left him with no choice but to seek employment elsewhere.
