Football Players group wants Centennial role

AT LEAST one group has come out in support of former national players who have not been officially recognised by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) during its centenary year.
The Football Players Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FPATT), in a media release on Thursday expressed what they described as their disappointment in the TTFF failure to use the eagerly awaited June 1 Centennial Match against England as an opportunity to formally recognise the players who have made the country proud over the same period.
"FPATT wishes to thank the TTFF officials who have tried to assist former national players and 2006 World Cup players with match tickets for today's match against the English, scheduled for the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo," the release stated.
Recent reports have circulated about the way a number of ex-Trinidad and Tobago footballers were treated by the TTFF, as they (the players) felt they should have been officially honoured for their contribution to the sport locally.
"We feel that, as a body, the TTFF should have officially shown the respect we think is due for teams like the 2006 'Soca Warriors', 1991 and 2001 World Youth Cup teams, the 1989 'Strike Squad' and the 1974 World Cup qualifying squad," the release added.
But the Players' Association is still hopeful of improved relations in the future.
"FPATT hopes that it can work alongside the TTFF for similar events in the future to ensure that the players, who are the Federation's most valuable employees and FPATT's own members, are treated in a courteous manner," the media release continued.
"FPATT will continue to support and assist present and past players who worked tirelessly for their country despite the obstacles."
The organisation is headed by former national goalkeeper Shaka Hislop who is currently a sports commentator with the ESPN sports cable television network in the US.
