Mention the name Mauro Tassotti to any red-blooded Spaniard and you can expect a raging bull like response.

It was the Italian's elbow that destroyed the nose of Luis Enrique during the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. The Spaniards have not forgiven or forgotten that incident and to the Spanish it sums the Azzurri — cynical, dirty and capable of any tactic to win a game.

Spain versus Italy Sunday in Vienna is the kind of matchup that has football purists going all weak at the knees. Two teams capable of playing the beautiful game at levels that mere mortals can only dream about.

So just who will win and move on to the semifinals of Euro 2008?

Goalkeepers

Gianluigi Buffon is the best goalkeeper in the world and needs no lengthy description — his qualities are numerous. What he has become is the undisputed leader of the team which, given the Italians love of playmakers and defenders, is quite a feat.

Spain's number one, Iker Casillas is only 27-years old. That seems amazing because his name has been associated with Real Madrid and his country for almost a decade. Casillas is a superb technician but according to training reports he has shown a little fatigue.

Advantage: Italy

Backline

Spain wouldn't be Spain unless coach Luis Aragones was having a row with someone. Usually it's the opposition or Raul, however a blow up with fullback Sergio Ramos is threatening to become a big story and it's the backline that has given most Spanish supporters sleepless nights. Ramos has not been at his best while Carlos Puyol has been hampered by injury. Also, Carlos Marchena has to walk the yellow card tight rope so how committed can he be? They have conceded a goal in every match and at times look fragile.

Andrea Barzagli is out so Christian Panucci starts in the heart of the back four. It's hard to believe that Panucci is still going strong — he really comes across as a nasty piece of work and embodies everything that that Spanish hate about Italian football, but he does the job and still crops up to score massive goals. Fabio Grosso will provide the attacking spark down the left hand side and Spain will need to curb those marauding runs.

Advantage: Italy

Midfield

The Azzurri have suffered a potentially deadly double blow, losing both Genarro Gattuso and the brilliant Andrea Pirlo. The loss of Pirlo will be felt the most as Gattuso is easily replaced by the like-minded and aggressive Mauro Camoranesi. Daniele de Rossi, who was so effective against the French, will need to have the game of his life.

Marcos Senna has been superb in the heart of the Spanish midfield and he is the key for Spain. He keeps them ticking over playing simple yet incisive football. With David Silva playing with wit and personality, the options are endless for Aragones who has the luxury of bringing Cesc Fabregas off the bench. I'd be tempted to play the Arsenal youngster from the start tonight though as Andreas Iniesta has yet to hit the high notes.

Advantage: Spain

Strikers

Fernando Torres and David Villa have lit up this tournament with their brilliant link up and combination play. Both men use pace, movement and invention to unlock defenses and against a typically stingy Italian back four that will surely be the deciding factor. With four goals to date, Villa has a chance to do what no one has done at the Euro since Michel Platini — win the tournament and finish as top scorer.

Luca Toni is a lonely figure at the spearhead of the Italian attack but he surely puts in some miles. His finishing looks labored, however there is no such thing as a lost cause in Toni's book. In each match he has given his opponents fits and he must be licking his chops in anticipation of facing a week Spanish backline.

Advantage: Spain

Coaches

Luis Aragones is as controversial as he is colorful. The 'Wise Man of Hortaleza' has a notoriously quick temper but is determined, flexible and completely unafraid of making big decisions. This will be his last assignment with the national team and no one can doubt his passion in wanting to give Spain their first international trophy since 1964.

How Roberto Donadoni copes with the loss of key players will ultimately sum him up as a coach. Until the win over France, the knives were out for the man brought into replace Marcelo Lippi. For me the jury is out until tonight — another victory and he is the real deal.

Advantage: Spain

We've been privileged to witness some sensational matches at Euro 2008. On paper this one could be the best of the lot if both teams play to full potential but this is Italy and Spain we're talking about.

I feel that the Azzurri will set out to frustrate the Spaniards and turn the match into a tactical war. If Spain can score early though, the kind of football we dream about has a chance to become reality.

Spain wins 2-1.

Azzurri aim to halt Spanish march
by Richard Aikman from Vienna
http://www.euro2008.uefa.com/tournament/matches/match=301702/report=pr.html

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni knows his side must take care of the pace in Spain's attack when the teams meet in the last UEFA EURO 2008™ quarter-final in Vienna on Sunday – but is urging his players to "enjoy themselves" on the ultimate stage.

Friendly encounter
Having conceded four goals in the tournament so far, the Azzurri will next try to thwart the feared strike force of David Villa and Fernando Torres, who shared five goals between them as Spain won Group D with a perfect record. Although Donadoni recognises the strengths of a side that beat his own 1-0 in a March friendly, he is confident Italy can build on Tuesday's Group C victory against France by prolonging an undefeated run in competitive matches against Spain stretching back 88 years.

Spanish praise
"We played Spain recently and they are a great team," the coach said. "They haven't always done well in big tournaments but this will spur them on, so we must be just as motivated as them. They are not very physical but they have great pace. We've learned a lot from each other but you can't compare a friendly with the quarter-finals of a EURO. And we have our strengths too. The boys must remember to enjoy themselves, because to enjoy yourself you have to play well. If they do that they can achieve anything."

Conundrum
Although Donadoni insists the Azzurri will not alter the way they play, one conundrum looms large for the 44-year-old, and that is how to replace Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso. Both AC Milan midfielders, who played so well in the triumph over France, are suspended for the Ernst-Happel-Stadion encounter. Massimo Ambrosini should return while Pirlo's place could go to AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani – a decision Donadoni will only make on the morning of the match. Italy's sole injury concern since their last outing is the knee problem that has ended defender Andrea Barzagli's tournament.

Perfect record
Spain coach Luis Aragonés also concedes he is in a quandary over team selection but for very different reasons. While Italy lost their first group game and drew their second, La Roja have a 100 per cent record in the finals so far. The same XI won their first two matches, against Russia (4-1) and Sweden (2-1), before Aragonés made ten changes for Wednesday's 2-1 defeat of holders Greece. On the eve of Sunday's contest, the 69-year-old said he has "no team in mind". He is, however, sure of victory.

'Convinced'
"I am convinced we will win," he asserted, as Spain aim to put six UEFA European Championship quarter-final defeats behind them. "I have no doubt these players are ready to give 110 per cent. We have to think positively, and this side is doing just that. My glass is half-full and inside I am sure we are going to go through." Aragonés, who cites Fabio Grosso and Luca Toni as potential danger men, will be buoyed by defender Carles Puyol's return from a foot injury and now believes Spain can lift the Henri Delaunay trophy for the first time since 1964. "I believe this squad can put an end to our problems once and for all," he concluded.

The calls in the box have to be more specific. A call in the box have a very high chance of changing the game than a general call on the field.  Also you can see Spain looking for the PK, therefore the ref have to be very careful about making a rash call in the box.

Phenomenal shit football... they perfected the brand.

But whatever... it works, and they have a way of getting calls from the refs too that is just mind-boggling.  Fabregas and ah man stretch dey foot fuh ah ball, Fabregas make contact with de bottom of de man foot...which is tuh say de stamp him.  De man spin 'round like ah ballerina wave he hand twice at de ref den fall like dey shoot him.  Fabregas get call fuh de foul despite de fact that de man clearly peg him on he instep.  He blowing all kinda wind foul in de middle of the field but swallowing he whistle inside the Italian penalty area.

Dread a foul is a foul, is a foul! If more refs call dem in the box ah bet some of dem players would stop doing dat kind of shit. Plus why penalize the skill shown by the offensive player to beat the defender. Silva beat the Italian defender IN THE BOX and was FOULED as a result! While I don't necessarily disagree you can't allow the defense to start taking advantage of that by deliberately grabbing man shirt and running up dey back all kinda nonsense...because they KNOW the ref not going to call it.

Alyuh have to be flicking mad...u expect to get them petty call in a Euro 1/4 finals. Freaking hell. Not one of them is a valid PK call.

the first one the man step on the guy foot IN THE AREA no call, the second one you can clearly see the shirt being pulled no call again. you saying those should not be a penalty??

I agree, but he blowin for the same FOUL when it happen in the middle of the park! Refs does let players get away with all kinds of lazy, desperate defending!

The calls in the box have to be more specific. A call in the box have a very high chance of changing the game than a general call on the field.  Also you can see Spain looking for the PK, therefore the ref have to be very careful about making a rash call in the box.

The ref's failure to make the correct call bailed the beaten defender out!

exactly its a foul in the box it should have been called.

While I don't necessarily disagree you can't allow the defense to start taking advantage of that by deliberately grabbing man shirt and running up dey back all kinda nonsense...because they KNOW the ref not going to call it.

Thank you my point exactly that ref let them get away with alot of shite in this game already

A foul is a foul yes, but in the box it's gonna be different whether you like it or not. The pulling shirt okay yes he did, but the chances of him getting that call would have been greatly ehanced if he was actually going TO goal.

Calling in the box not that cut and dry. I agree Bakes he have to be careful that the defense start thinking they can get away with it. That's why you punish them a little more stern outside the box.

As negative as they played, we can still learn somthing from the Italians.Organization, discipline and individual dedication to their defensive duties.Young Trini players can learn much from their display.

Agree. I also really didn't feel like dealing with dem Italians in Toronto honking their horn and rubbing their flags up in mih face. The only fella I feel bad for was Pirlo.

Man of the match fuh me is Iker, followed by Marcos Senna, IMO he should have been taking the free kicks, he is very good at them

on to this Soca Warrior business now

Italy gone back to dey pre-World Cup dull counter attacking self.  Ah glad dey loss.  Hear nah, Guiza play real shit.  He have no speed and dey sending him to chase long pass.  Dat chest trap he get call for handsing was a classic.  He put he two hand down like he using a pogo stick or something.  Ah sure de ref blow de whistle even before de ball reach.  Den he throw way de penalty.  He had a miserable day.  Dey shoulda keep Torres on.  Men say Senna was MOTM.  It have to be Casillas.  Silva had a real nice game too almost scored twice.

Can Spain get de monkey off dey back and win dis whole thing?

Italy deserve to go home with that ultra defensive style.  Ah appreciate their discipline, but sometimes it's good to see creative football prevail.  It's about time Spain justify the wealth of talent they produce, and replicate their club success at the national level.

congrats Spain..

My side Italy didnt deserve to progress based on this tournament. Pirlo was sorely missed and I thought Aquilani would step up but he was like a deer in the headlights.

I feel this side doesn't have much further to go under Donadoni. This has to go down as a poor tournament. But the Azzurri will rise again!!

Senna.. what a player.. young budding midfielders should look at a tape of this game to see how the CDM position is played. Simple, disciplined and effective.. Never trying to do too much or force a pass.

Khaleem Hyland should take a close look at this video to see how he handled this game today.

Ah well.. I guess I'm a neutral spectator for the rest of this tourney..
