Title: Ramón Maradiaga fired! (Guatemala coach)
Post by: Jahyouth on October 18, 2008, 01:15:47 AM
Happened yesterday.  Bye bye Maradiaga.  He must have nightmares whenever he hears the name Trinidad and Tobago!

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Ramon Maradiaga was fired as coach of Guatemala's national soccer team, two days after a 2-1 loss to Cuba damaged the team's chances of advancing in World Cup qualifying.
Guatemala's only chance to advance to next year's finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean is to beat the United States on Nov. 19 at Commerce City, Colo., and have Trinidad and Tobago lose at home to Cuba.

The United States (4-1) has clinched a berth from Group One of the semifinals, and Trinidad and Tobago (2-1-2) is second with eight points, three ahead of Guatemala (1-2-2), which has a better goal difference.

The 53-year-old Maradiaga, who was fired Friday, captained Honduras at the 1982 World Cup.

Ah think we are their bogey team.  We really have dem in we back pocket.  In all honesty, we've been playing a lot better in Central America lately.  We seem to be getting a better grip for playing under such hostile conditions.  Long time, with that sending off, the flood gates would have opened.

Well the problem is, we play shit and then improve via new players/new coach, so they opposition tends to underestimate us, until they learn the latter.

Ah feel for Guat, but Cuba is the cut ass team in this group, so they should have just performed.

In hindsight, I am impressed with our Cuba result, with basically a Second 11.

Well no surprise there. I was checking the comments sections in some Guatemalan newspapers and everybody was furious with de man; they was calling for his head. apparently people was upset with his team selections (sounds familiar) and the way the team was playing. i sure the man does see yorke and latapy in his nightmares.

Look high look low, the man exits with his dignity. You'll be hardpressed to find someone who is as familiar with Guatemalan ball as is Maradiaga. To significant degree the local club scene has been reliant on coaches from outside like Maradiaga ... maybe it's time the federation goes brave and picks a local NT coach ... What's the harm? Give the program some roots and blooding, especially considering no major tournament is likely on the horizon for them.

On the real, it's unlikely anybody stepping into this role will be looking at 2014 concretely. At best it'll provide the occupant with a resume line for a subsequent national role elsewhere after putting in the usual 1.5 to 2 year stint. Some of the recycled Argentinian expats' names that are being tossed in to replace Maradiaga ultimately won't serve the program in the long run. Go local Guatemala! ... Plus, then Piccio can "interview" as much as he wants :rotfl:

Guatemala gets new soccer coach
sportingnews.com

- Benjamin Monterroso was hired as Guatemala's national soccer coach for the third time Friday, taking over a team on the brink of elimination during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

He replaces Ramon Madariaga, a Honduran who was fired after a 2-1 loss to Cuba.

Guatemala's only chance of advancing to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying is to beat the United States at Commerce City, Colo., on Nov. 19 and hope Trinidad and Tobago loses at home to Cuba. Guatemala has never qualified for the World Cup.

Monterroso also coached Guatemala in 1998-99 and 2003-04. He also led the country's Olympic team during qualifying for the 2000 Sydney Games. His last coaching position was with Suchitepequez of the local league in 2005.

Well, they went local ... but they stayed foreign for the U-20s after Kenton left to coach Costa Rica's senior team ... they're going to continue being a thorn in the side in the years ahead.
