For 27 years, Churaman Ramsaroop showed no signs of being a violent person. But on Monday afternoon, Ramsaroop chopped 14-year-old Zoreen Ansara Mohammed to death, after tying her up with shoe laces, slicing her with a knife and bludgeoning her with a blunt object on the head. He then committed suicide.
The murder/suicide took place off Bancroft Trace, Freeport, on a deserted track about four miles from Ramsaroop’s home in Arena Village. Late yesterday, both Ramsaroop’s and Mohammed’s relatives were trying to find out what had caused the murder/suicide. Mohammed’s uncle Fazeed Ali said his niece and Ramsaroop were not in any relationship. He said Ramsaroop worked as a PH driver and used to pick up Mohammed and four other students daily to take them to the Carapichaima West Secondary School.
Ali said he and the girl’s mother, Zorida, escorted Mohammed into Ramsaroop’s car around 6.30 am on Monday. He said: “We never knew this would happen. Every day he takes her to school. He was a well-known person and a good person. He used to pick up a trip every day. He and my niece were not in any relationship.” He said when Mohammed failed to return home on Monday, they began looking for her. They went to Ramsaroop’s home, and his mother Rajpati said she did not know Ramsaroop’s whereabouts. His car was parked outside the house.Ramsaroop’s brother Khemraj said he started a search, and around 5 pm he saw Ramsaroop’s wheel tractor parked close to a forested area.
“When I checked, I saw him lying right there on the ground with a bottle of Lanate next to him...It looked like he killed himself,” Khemraj said.
Police said they believed that after killing Mohammed, Ramsaroop went home and parked his car. Bloodstains and a knife were found in the vehicle.
He then took his tractor and drove to a forested area where he drank the poison, poice said. About 16 hours later, Dipnarine Ramsaroop found Mohammed’s body several miles away. Mohammed’s left leg was broken and her feet were tied with shoe laces. Her hands were also bound with strips of cloth. Her head was bashed in and there were slashes on her face. The girl’s parents, Zorida and Shaban Mohammed, wept uncontrollably for their only child

Well I'll skate past the deliberately provocative parts of your post only to say that it speaks to the problem we have in Trinidad (indeed the Caribbean) where patriarchal norms are so prevalent that women are seen less as partners and more as possessions... to be controlled by men, directed and disposed of when we see fit. This indicts not only the prevalence and acceptance of horning and marital infidelity in our society (can you imagine a woman being 'brave' enough to go have ah "outside" chile on she husband?). To a larger extent it also helps explain the cavalier attitude we have towards domestic violence as well, and why tougher laws aren't yet on the books.
In fact, I often wonder how some of our female forumites even brook some of the latent patriarchal attitudes that sometimes creep into our discussions here on SW.net.

Quagmire- the black race is the most protected race from insults of that nature....and from my observation, in general it's sorta unspoken that black people are allowed to the feel least guilty about making racist remarks about other racial groups....In sum the degree of sensitivity that exists with racist remarks against black people is alot higher than when it's the other way around...
The history of highly publicized mainstream racism & oppression of blacks is the reason for that...It's a sad but inevitable fact of life.
That said I agree with Organic that I doubt any racist harm was meant- but agree that a higher degree of sensitivity must be exercised on msg boards like this... Not all indians (a very small % I'm pretty damn sure) chop their wives when they get drunk and jealous... so the generalization is inappropriate.
Bakes- I fully agree with your first post except I don't think the Caribbean holds any kinda monopoly over that mindset.... I think there is a correlation between the mindset and level of education, global exposure and general advancement...

These type of crimes affect T&T..and evryone in T&T not just indians, black, dougla or chinee...This man is ah Trini and thats all that matters.. when we have our neighbors, schooolchildren, fellow citizens in these types of acts as murderers or victims it leaves a stain on the entire country not just one sector of the country...thats why we as TRINIBAGONIAN (not indian or black) people have to figure out a solution on how to educate our people of not choosing this option as a problem solver..
..and once we have more people in T&T thinking as a Trini instead of an indian or black person when a national crisis or nationally recognised incident (of a negative nature) happens THEN we will move closer to unity..As of right now its mostly music and sports that unites the nation..this is one reason why our politics is still racially divided..

what I did was state a sociological observation that is borne out by studies done right there in Trinidad. It was never my assertion that Caribbean men EXCLUSIVELY have that mindset (Kicker this addresses your response as well). We are talking about an incident which occurred in the Caribbean and thus that's why I spoke of Caribbean men. Not sure what your divorce in the US angle has to do with what I said, but anyways...
That said, we do have a particular problem in the Caribbean given the high incident of domestic abuse and physical assaults occurring within relationships (different from actual "domestic" abuse). Just a backdrop:
Early in indentureship because of the realities of the society from which workers were recruited in India, there were significantly more men than women in the colonies. One article I read had it as high as 25 men to every woman. As a result East Indian women in Trinidad (the article dealt with Trinidad) were from early seen as a valuable commodity, not only to the man who was lucky enough to have one, but also to the community itself. This is why the notion of indian women mixing with the local African population was such a powder keg issue, and one of the reasons why Indian men were so possessive of their women.
Whether you think it's stereotypical or text bookish, it's also a harsh reality. By no means do I think this applies to each and every East Indian man in Trinidad, but I'm pretty sure it perfectly describes the mindset of many. Ever wonder why there isn't a similar incidence of murder-suicides among non-Indian ethnic groups in Trinidad? My assessment was one which also took the ethnicity of the killer and victim into consideration... seeing how much play it got in the thread.
You also completely missed my point about the 'cavalier' attitude our society has towards domestic violence. You seem to interpret that as meaning the average citizen holds such an attitude.... but it goes deeper than that, which is why I spoke about the laws currently on the books as well. It's not just Joe and Jane citizen... but the police as well. It's ironic that you point out that the police don't take domestic abuse seriously but yet fail to see that I was making the same point as well. Police don't take it seriously and our lawmakers don't take it seriously.
On all levels in Trinidad, even among the victims themselves ("if he ent beat mih den dat mean he ent love mih"), we have conditioned ourselves to become accepting of domestic violence... "tuh see man beating woman... is not uncommon" ... "ah little boot, little foot, little ruff, little cuff, little rough up she nuff nuff"... as Nello sang in "We Like It". So yeah, as I said... regardless police, politician or civilian, we have too much of a cavalier attitude towards domestic violence.

The mentalities are; 'it could never happen to my child', 'down by we safe', 'everybody know everybody'
No body ask questions anymore. The parents these days are as young as the child. Who has more sense than who ? Who knows if this has more into the story than we don't know yet. Who's to say that this child told a parent or parents about maybe been harassed by this man, or even verbally abused by him. Nobody would know now, unless she mentioned something to one of her school friends (sworn to secrecy or he'll kill meh).

Her school teacher, Neesha Bajnath, brought mourners to tears when she recalled her last moments with the teenager, who would have turned 15 next month. Mohammed attended the Carapichaima West Secondary School.
"I will stake my own reputation and my life on what I know about this child. She was a blessing to us all. She was dedicated, responsible and hard working. In class last Friday she was determined to ask me a question. She wanted to know when a person was in the grave? And when the angels came to ask us the three questions? When do we smell jannah? (the Islamic conception of paradise). But I did not get to answer her," she cried.
Bajnath said the teenager would often be seen sitting on her grandmother's lap, or hugging her parents.
"We are hearing all sorts of things, but this is a child. Don't judge anyone because she never did. She took everyone as they came," she said.
Around midday a coffin bearing Mohammed's body was wheeled into the family's Arena Road, Freeport home. Her mother, Zorida, screamed out on seeing her only child's face. "Look what he do to my child," she cried before burying her face into a relative's embrace.
Shaban Mohammed held on to his wife and they both placed red and white roses on their daughter's body, which was draped in a white cloth. Her face was then covered with the cloth for the service to begin.
Imam Zaman Mohammed, who officiated at the service, said Mohammed was a generous girl, who was obedient and respectful to elders in the community. He asked that people respect the parents' grief and don't cast judgment on their child.
Dr Hamza Rafeeq, MP for Caroni Central, pleaded with parents to encourage their children to talk about issues affecting their lives. "As adults we are not aware of the stress and challenges our young people face at school, so please open a route of communication within young children. You have to assist them or they will turn to the wrong people and get the wrong advice," he said.
Rafeeq said whether or not the rumours were true, Mohammed did not deserve a violent death. "This is traumatic for the family, don't let Zareen die a second death. Protect the dignity of Zareen and members of her family," he said.
Ramsaroop picked up the teenager at her home around 6.30 a.m. on Monday. Mohammed's parents had hired him to take her to school. When she did not return that evening her parents went to Ramsaroop's home. He was not there. They however found blood in his 280C car, which was parked in the garage.
A search led relatives to a garden in Carlsen Field, where they found Ramsaroop's body.
An autopsy confirmed that he died after drinking a deadly weedicide.
The next morning, Mohammed's bloodied body was found in a dirt track off Bankroft Road, Freeport. Her hands and feet were tied and she was beaten on her head.

There have been many murder-suicide in T&T of all ethnic groups, even more so "love murder". It's just that the Indo-Trinis get the flack cause of the "Indian tonic". Currently in T&T I don't see that women are seen as possesion especially starting from the generation after me.

By no means do I think this applies to each and every East Indian man in Trinidad, but I'm pretty sure it perfectly describes the mindset of many. Ever wonder why there isn't a similar incidence of murder-suicides among non-Indian ethnic groups in Trinidad? My assessment was one which also took the ethnicity of the killer and victim into consideration... seeing how much play it got in the thread.

I was talking about the possessiveness of men in the Caribbean and circumstances leading to it being more pronounced among East Indian men. That manifests itself in apparently elevated levels of murder-suicide among that group but by no means was there ever a focus on "which race doing de most killing". To reduce my posts to a mere discussion of race is just foolish. If that is all you or anybody else get out of my posts then you need to look at yourselves rather than focus on what was posted.

Well it basically has it's roots in notions of property. A dowry of some sort was paid to the bride's family in exchange for the woman. The woman was valuable for her domestic prowess, as well as for her ability to reproduce. Not saying fathers didn't love their daughters, but in the end she was a commodity to be traded. The ability to bear the man an heir was valuable (hence why Henry VIII kept trying and trying... of course it couldn'a been him who was shooting blanks, lol), because it meant ''free' help to farm, hunt...govern/rule etc. Someone to carry on the man's lineage. The man's lineage was more important, that's why the woman gave up her name and took on his instead. This is also why marriages were used to cement bonds between clans... even if the marriage was between first cousins. Better to marry 'within' the extended clan, than to dilute the power/influence of the family by marrying outside.
All of this is tied to inheritance (or passing property). The man needed a son, and most importantly, needed his first born to be a boy. Look up the law of primogeniture and you'll see what I mean. When a woman married, her possessions became her husband's. So if you bequeathed your estate to your daughter you might as well be giving it away to a stranger, because it was guaranteed to leave the possession of your family and pass to her future husband. Even if the first born was a girl, she was usually disinherited in favor of the first born boy for the same reason.
