Title: Old Flags of Trinidad and Tobago
Post by: E-man on March 28, 2009, 01:22:58 PM
In the quiz time board (http://www.socawarriors.net/forum/index.php?topic=42980.0) we had a question of when football was introduced and the old 1908 team taken in front of the union jack. So I looked up the older flags. Here is a web page I found:

Blue ensign for Trinidad 1889 to 1958

Red ensign
The motto reads: "She is content to make treaties and unite peoples." Another translation is "He approved of the mingling of peoples and their being joined together by treaties"

1958 flag

Queen's flag used 1966-1976 before T&T went all Republic on her ass.

Tobago: Fargo House Movement flag 1977

motto reads: "she becomes more beautiful"

100 years prior: Tobago 1877

More Tobago variations:

1889

Tobago was administered as part of the Windward Islands from 1833 until 1889 when it was annexed to Trinidad and used the Trinidad flag above.

who exactly was using this one?  was it just for a narrow set of events?

I wasn't around in '62 but in the video of the flag being raised at independence it's definitely the same flag we have today.

this looks like it shares a lot with the coat of arms but we using that since 1962 also.

edit: I guess I shoulda either think about it more or click on the link you included.  does the queen still have personal flags for other countries that aren't republics?

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_Personal_New_Zealand_Flag for general details about a Queen's personal flag for a non-republic Commonwealth country.

Basically it is designed, approved and used for visits of the Queen to the particular country. Queen Elizabeth II visited Trinidad and Tobago first in  1966  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Commonwealth_visits_made_by_Queen_Elizabeth_II) at which time the personal flag was used for the first time.
