The world’s highest-paid athletes.

Eight months on the shelf after knee surgery put a severe dent in his prize money, and killed his overseas appearance fees. One of his main sponsors walked away a year before their agreement was set to expire.
Yet Tiger Woods remains sports’ highest earner with an annual income two and a half times larger than his closest competitor. The world’s top golfer made $110 million during the past 12 months and is the best-paid sportsman for the eighth straight year.
Woods’ knee injury caused his prize money to drop to $5 million from $25 million, but his overall earnings only fell $5 million thanks to an expansion of Woods’ non-playing financial empire.
PepsiCo launched Gatorade Tiger last year in March with claims that it “helps focus your mind and your body.” Woods receives a cut of sales for the four flavors sold under his name. When General Motors’ problems caused Buick to terminate its $8 million a year deal with Woods one year early, the Woods camp moved quickly to sign a deal with AT&T to put the phone company’s brand on his golf bag in Buick’s place.
Nike is by far Woods’ biggest benefactor with an annual payday of more than $30 million for the golfer. Woods profits from the success of the company’s golf division, and last year sales for Nike Golf hit a record $725 million. Woods’ most lucrative new endeavor is his golf course design business. Last year he announced plans for a third course to be built in Mexico. His other courses in Dubai and North Carolina are currently under construction.
Our list of the highest-paid athletes looks at earnings derived from salaries, bonuses, prize money, endorsements and licensing income between June 2008 and June 2009 and does not deduct for taxes or agents’ fees. Overall, the top 20 earned $789 million, down 1 percent from last year. The cutoff to make the list was $30 million.
Drop-offs from last year include boxer Floyd Mayweather (has not fought since December 2007), NFL players Ben Roethlisberger and Dwight Freeney (both made the 2008 list after inking contracts with big signing bonuses) and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso (just missed the cut).
The highest-ranking of the four newcomers to the list is boxer Manny Pacquiao who earned $40 million over the last year, tied for the sixth most. Pacquiao cemented his claim as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter with convincing knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in May. The two blockbuster fights garnered more than 2 million pay-per-view buys in the U.S. and earned Pac-Man $30 million combined.
Pacquiao’s massive popularity in his native Philippines is why companies like Nike and San Miguel beer have signed him to endorse their products. Pacquiao intends to use that popularity to run for political office when his ring career is over.
Our 20 highest earners have a very international flavor with Pacquiao one of eight non-Americans on the list. Finnish Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen earned $45 million over the past year, tied for second on our list with hoop legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Right behind that trio is global icon David Beckham who earned $42 million playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan, while shilling for Adidas, Giorgio Armani and Motorola.
Notable omission: the entire NFL, which didn’t place anyone in the top 20 despite being the world’s richest sports league. The league’s salary cap keeps a lid on individual player salaries, and few players outside of Peyton Manning collect big endorsement deals. The top NFL earner during the past 12 months was Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha who made $22 million, mainly as a result of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed in February.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder David Beckham has topped Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the world's best-paid footballer.
France Football magazine has calculated Beckham, 37, will make €36 million this year, one million ahead of Messi, 25, in second and a further five million clear of Ronaldo, 28, in third.
Although the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars' salaries of €12.5 million and €13 million respectively dwarf that of Beckham's, estimated at €1.7 million, it is the Englishman's status as a global marketing icon which earns him some €33 million from advertising and endorsements, that has put him top of the ranking for the sixth time in the last 15 years.
While Ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema, 25, is the highest-ranked French player at 20th with €12 million annually, PSG trio Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 31 (€15 million and eighth globally), Thiago Silva, 28 (€9.6 million), and Ezequiel Lavezzi, 27 (€9.4 million), unsurprisingly occupy the top three places in Ligue 1.
PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti, 53, ranks second among coaches with €12 million annually, €2 million behind Madrid's Jose Mourinho, 50.

yuh cant have a squad with more than 1 man in a "free role", we done have neymar in that role and scolari even have him dropping back to defend and tackle.
i am a big dinho fan but let us be honest...he doesnt fit in the squad based on his current form and the make up of the team.

He is my favorite player of all time. I will never forgive Dunga for excluding him in 2010 but time it is understandable. I watch his matches often. Everything positive about Miniero comes through him. But he doesn't press and has to have the ball play to his feet all the time. As the video will attest his dead all skills are sublime and his close control and passing is phenomenal. He still produces a highlight reel of skills every game.
I still dream he will by some miracle make the team and help the World Cup next year.

The 25 Most Valuable Soccer Players In The World

The Football Observatory at the International Centre for Sports Studies released its annual review for the 2014 season, and it contains estimated market values for the most valuable players in the five big European leagues.
The player valuations were made by a model that takes into account "age, length of contract remaining, position, player performance at club level for last and previous seasons (matches, minutes, goals, assists, passes, tackles, interceptions, etc.), results of the clubs to which players belong, as well as players' international experience and results of association represented at national A-team level."
When a player switches teams in soccer, the club buying him pays the selling team a transfer fee. This Football Observatory study estimates that transfer fee for each player.
Some observations:
Lionel Messi, who's the most valuable player in the world as well as the highest-paid player in the world, is nearly twice as expensive as the 2nd-most valuable player, Cristiano Ronaldo. That's because Messi is just 26 years old while Ronaldo is 29.
Nearly every player in the top-25 could be described as an attacking player (23 out of 25, with Sergio Busquets and probably Paul Pogba as the lone exceptions).
Eleven of the top-25 players play in the English Premier League, eight play in Spain, two play in France, two play in Germany, and two play in Italy.
The youngest player (Raheem Sterling) is 19 years old. The oldest (Andres Iniesta) is 30.

With the transfer window now open in many of the world's top soccer leagues, the CIES Football Observatory has released their semi-annual list of the most valuable football players in the world.
Lionel Messi of Barcelona in Spain's La Liga tops the list with a staggering transfer value of $262 million (€220 million) and nobody else is even close.
And that would just be the estimated cost of acquiring the rights to the Argentinean footballer. If a team were able to convince Barcelona to sell Messi, the new club would then have to negotiate a new contract with the player.
Messi reportedly makes slightly more than $50 million per year with his current contract at Barça.
There are a lot of valuable athletes in North America, and while this side of the Atlantic uses a different means of transferring players between teams, it is hard to imagine any team would pay $262 million for their rights and then give them a $50 million annual salary.
Messi's transfer value is calculated by examining transfer fees since 2009 and variables such as recent performance, age, position, current contract, and team performance.
For many of the world's top association football leagues, January marks the mid-season transfer window where clubs are given approximately one month to add players from international leagues.

... He's with Querétaro, so if anyone pulls a "Tulla Guerra" that would be in Belize. However, I wouldn't bet on Querétaro persisting with Ronaldinho or vice versa. But yuh never know, the club's profile has heightened.

As predicted, Ronaldinho and Querétaro have parted ways (with a year left on the contract). Word has it that he's considering Turkey. The destination is supposedly Antalyaspor, who went down to the second flight the season before last and won promotion immediately this year.
The interesting thing is that Eto'o is said to have signed with the club already (which would mean that the deal he signed with Sampdoria earlier this year is now off the table).
Could be interesting: Ronaldinho AND Eto'o balling at the same club. However, from a point of caution I eh know ... two words come to mind: "Anzhi Makhachkala" ... and those are two words familiar to Eto'o. Time will tell.

Ronaldinho leaves Fluminense after just nine appearances in three months

Ronaldinho has brought a swift end to his spell with the Brazilian side Fluminense, leaving the club by mutual consent after just nine appearances in three months. During this time he failed to score or provide any assists, and he was booed by his own fans during defeat in the Campeonato Brasileiro to Atlético Mineiro last month.
The former Barcelona and Brazil forward, now 35, had previously played for the Mexican side Querétaro, but moved on with a year left on his contract to return to his homeland.
However, on Monday night the Rio-based club, in a statement on their website, said: “Fluminense hereby announces the end of the contract with Ronaldinho amicably and in mutual agreement between the parties. Fluminense and Ronaldinho retain close ties and plan to work on other projects in the future.
“It should be noted that the player’s hiring met all expectations with regarding to marketing returns, increasing ticket and shirt sales for the club as well as attracting a number of partners. Ronaldinho’s recruitment also showed that Fluminense are capable of attracting the greatest players in world football.”
Fluminense currently sit 12th in Brazil’s top tier, just six points above the relegation places, but Ronaldinho’s failure to add to their goal tally leaves them with a negative goal difference after they could muster only 30 goals from 28 matches, the former international forward Fred having contributed seven.

Ronaldinho is a ca$h cow. He was a cash cow for Queretaro and seemingly so for Fluminense. Everyone ends up a winner. To a degree. Thing is he wants to stay associated with the game, and to keep playing. He might not be prepared to face retirement.

Dread kaka qualifies as useful even if not explosively so, dinho has been mostly underwhelming, for how many years now.

Fluminense confirm Ronaldinho's return for Florida Cup

Ronaldinho will represent his former club Fluminense at an exhibition tournament in the US next month, the Brazilian club confirmed on Thursday.
The 35-year-old left Fluminense by mutual consent in October after failing to score or provide an assist in nine matches for the Rio de Janeiro outfit, Xinhua news agency reported.
"It wasn't a mistake, it was an opportunity," Fluminense president Peter Siemsen told reporters.
"We were frustrated and he was too. It was something we tried and in life that's what you do. When there are opportunities we aren't afraid to take them. We left on good terms."
It is understood that Ronaldinho's return for the Florida Cup honours a clause written into the attacker's contract when he joined Fluminense in July.
Fluminense see his participation as a unique opportunity to promote the club's brand.
The Brazilian side will be among eight teams to compete in the tournament along with Internacional, Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians, Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Santa Fe (Colombia).
Ronaldinho to join Fluminense in US friendly event

Brazilian football club Fluminense will take part in a pre-season tournament in the United States in January 2016.
The Rio de Janeiro side struck a deal with tournament organiser Disney after signing two-time FIFA World Player of the Year winner Ronaldinho on Tuesday, reports Xinhua.
"We are going to the United States to play in a tournament in January as part of a deal with Disney. Ronaldinho was the key to it," Fluminense president Peter Siemsen said.
Siemsen did not provide details about which other clubs would participate or where the tournament would be held.
Meanwhile, Ronaldinho could make his debut for Fluminense against Gremio at the Maracana Stadium here on Saturday. The 35-year-old has begun training with the club and will undergo a fitness test later in the week. Ronaldinho joined Fluminense on July 11 after parting with Mexico's Queretaro by mutual consent in June.

As gut instinct, I regarded it as dubious based on one key element and decided posting that as a caveat wasn't necessary because it might have occurred to others.
However, Lowe also opines that he cyah discount the story as being false, despite it not being in the book.

He was sort of disappointing for West Ham and Manchester United? He scored a ton of goals for Manchester City but then sort of stopped scoring goals for Manchester City? He had two wildly successful years at Juventus, reaching the Champions League final, before returning home to Boca Juniors in Argentina a year and a half ago?

Well. Him.
He may well become the best-paid player in the world as the moneyed Chinese Super League continues to go certifiably insane, according to reports. With a deal apparently already in place for cross-town rivals Shanghai SIPG to shell out $75 million for Chelsea’s Brazilian backup attacking midfielder Oscar – which would make the 25-year-old, who has made just five Premier League starts all season, the 10th-most expensive transfer of all time – Tevez is reportedly considering a deal with Shanghai Shenhua that will pay him more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi get.
Tevez is apparently being offered a two-year contract worth about $40 million per year for him to leave Boca during its midseason break. That’s in addition to the $78 million fee Shenhua would pay to Boca.
“I have many problems in my head to think about,” Tevez has said. “Whether in February or March I’m going to be in China. Not only could I leave [Boca], I could also stop playing. I still don’t know what I’m going to do. I reached the end of the year exhausted, with a thousand things in my head. That’s the time to stop a little and think about the future. I think about retiring, yes, that’s why I mention it.”
Plenty of big names have already been lured to China with contracts far above the players’ market value. But, at present, none are bigger than Brazilian forward Hulk’s. And in Oscar, but particularly Tevez, the upstart league, which already has the fifth-highest attendance of any league in the world, would again make real waves in the soccer world.
