Title: MICHAEL JACKSON DEAD AT 50
Post by: weary1969 on June 25, 2009, 03:49:25 PM
AP Source: Michael Jackson dies in LA hospital.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the "King of Pop" and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. He was 50.

The person said Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the newspaper.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" — which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" — remains the biggest-selling album of all time, with more than 26 million copies.

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

By some measures, he ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. In fact, he united two of music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie.

As years went by, he became an increasingly freakish figure — a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grownup life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions.

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him. The case took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.

Jackson was preparing for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping dance moves, elaborate staging and throbbing dance beats.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson's rented home, was roped off with police tape.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Jackson has just died," a woman boarding a Manhattan bus called out, shortly after the news was annunced. Immediately many riders reached for their cell phones.

In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend sent to his telephone. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

Recording artist, entertainer and global superstar Michael Jackson has died from an apparent heart attack in Los Angeles, Calif. He was 50 years-old.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II.

It was reported earlier by various news sources that Michael Jackson suffered a heart attack this afternoon at his home and was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson’s home at 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda told the Los Angeles Times.

According to the L.A. Now blog, Paramedics were called to a home on the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson rented the Bel Air home for $100,000 a month.

A Jackson family member, who was not identified, had told TMZ.com that Michael was in “really bad shape” as the brothers headed to the hospital.

L.A. Times: Michael Jackson dead at 50
Newspaper reports pop star wasn’t breathing when ambulance arrived

BREAKING NEWS
msnbc.com staff and news service reports
updated 1 hour, 9 minutes ago

The Los Angeles Times reports that Michael Jackson has died at age 50 after being rushed to UCLA Medical Center.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda told the newspaper that Jackson was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home and CPR was performed.

TMZ.com reported that he may have suffered cardiac arrest.

Jackson had been due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer, whose hits included “Thriller” and “Billie Jean,” had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within minutes of going on sale in March.

His lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, makes him one of the most successful entertainers of all time.

He lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation.

There were concerns about Jackson’s health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

A life in music
Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children. Five Jackson boys — Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael — first performed together at a talent show when Michael was 6. They walked off with first prize and went on to become a best-selling band, The Jackson Five, and then The Jackson 5.

Jackson made his first solo album in 1972, and released “Thriller” in 1982, which became a smash hit that yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million worldwide.

The next year, he unveiled his signature “moonwalk” dance move while performing “Billie Jean” during an NBC special.

In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley’s only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999. The couple never lived together.

Jackson has three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism.

Pop star Michael Jackson has been rushed to hospital in Los Angeles after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest.

The singer was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his Bel Air home at about 1230 (1900GMT), media reports say.

Unconfirmed reports on TMZ entertainment website say the 50-year-old star has died.

The paramedics performed CPR on Jackson as the ambulance took him to the UCLA medical centre, officials say.

Crowds have begun to gather outside the facility, whose emergency centre has been roped off by police.

The star was due to begin a series of comeback concerts with an appearance at London's O2 arena on 13 July.

He has a history of health problems and has not completed a concert tour in 12 years.

I REL sad and I cosign on all ah what allyuh saying, (palos, legal alien and big dawg)....I never really cared about all the sideline nonsense, I never believed any of the shit that was going on in he life.  I always just saw (the ORIGINAL) MJ as just being a grown little child, trying his best to (re?)capture his childhood.  Even the way he "wasted" his money away and the actual things he spent it on it remind you of a little child.   The man was arguably the greatest entertainer that ever lived and the kinda music that came from the partnership that was He, Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton and all the top-notch musicians that featured on his tours and albums is irreplaceable in the annals of all art.

Shock doh even begin to desccribe...

The shocking thing is how I feeling a sense of loss, after not caring a whit about anything Michael Jackson related since he stop being a talented entertainer and become a full-time tabloid circus show.

Michael Jackson had something special, like James Brown, Prince, they had a showmanship and energy that was natural. A real talent at his peak and I rate "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" as two of my favourite albums.

RIP

Trinis: Michael was truly the King
By RHONDOR DOWLAT (NEWSDAY)

Local fans yesterday paid tribute to Michael Jackson recalling his visit to Trinidad in 1973 when he performed at an early age with his brothers in the Jackson 5 which was deemed the all-time group in the world.

Jackson and his brothers performed at two sold out venues at Skinner Park in San Fernando and the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain. While here, Jackson also paid an impromptu visit to Holy Name Convent in Port-of-Spain.

Newsday was able to catch up with a few local fans who went to the Jackson 5 concert at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Newsday’s journalist Joan Rampersad was among the few who were fortunate to experience Jackson live in concert. “He is the only King of Pop. There was none before him and there will be none after him. I remember going to the concert and my pores raised to see him in action. He along with the rest of the Jackson 5 performed the then big hits ‘I want you back’ and ‘ABC’. I also remembered that Jackson introduced his little brother Randy who performed Lord Kitchener’s hit ‘Sugar Bum’ which sent the crowd in sheer ecstacy. I will always cherish that memorable event.”

Another fan Albert Lewis said he was only 17 when he attended the Port-of-Spain concert and also described it as a “once in a lifetime, memorable concert.”

Waaz Hosein said he remembered Jackson as a “little black boy” with a big Afro hairstyle and will never forget the dance moves he demonstrated on stage since, including the famous Moonwalk.

“I remember that the savannah was packed out. It had people all the way to where the US Embassy is located on Marli Street. Although they could not see him they heard his distinct voice and had a ball of a time,” Hosein said.

Former student of Holy Name Convent Michelle Wellington-Borde also shared her memorable experience when Jackson pulled up on the school’s compound in a regular taxi.

“I remember it was after school hours and we were practising our marching for our upcoming sports day we got word that Michael Jackson pulled up at school. I remembered that he rolled down the window to the car and began looking around.

“One of my girlfriends ran up to the car and leaned inside and asked him if he was Michael Jackson and he replied in a very soft voice ‘yes’. At that moment the girls began screaming and jumping around. We went crazy for him that day. He eventually came out of the car and walked into the school. He was wearing a red shirt and black pants and I think he had on white gloves.

I remembered him smiling and waving to us. Before leaving he thanked us and said that Trinidad was nice. That day will always be engraved in my heart.” Former Holy Faith Convent student Shaharazad Sherry Khan-Dowlat also shared her memorable experience. “I was very excited that he was here on our local soil. His performance was so thrilling and indeed he was back then a world icon and still is, although he has passed on now. He will always be a great legend and I believe that his songs will never die.

“A lot of Trinidadians even followed his style with the leather jackets and even in dances people were seen trying to do the moon walk dance. He brought a lot of joy and happiness upon his visit and surely left an impact. He will surely be missed. Michael we love you.”

He grew up too fast, was too talented and hence popular/famous for his own good, and went way too soon....Sad what overcommercialization and the sensationalism of pop culture can do to a human being...He was literally a superstar for his entire life... that can't be easy.

The one positive that comes from this loss is that people will now take a step back, get reminded of him as an artist and re-appreciate the influence that he's had on pop music and pop culture as a whole, as opposed to the freak of nature walking weirdo which was the image that seemed to have tainted his legacy in recent times.

From all accounts he was a good man with a huge humanitarian spirit....and it's no secret that revolutionized pop music, entertainment and performance during his career, so nuff respect...RIP MJ....

Seems to me that MJ (like most greats) died for the love of his craft and pleasing his fans!

I believe the strain of getting ready for his live shows in London (him being a perfectionist) and wanting to put out his very best performances for his fans is what could have brought on the heart attack!

MJ at 50 was not getting any younger and probably needed to pace his rehearsals less intense than in the past in recognition of such!
I’m sure we’ll hear more on the exact causes of his heart attack and what could have brought it on.

Not too longer ago James Brown the King of Soul and one of my all time favourite performers and MJ's main inspiration for his dance moves passed on and now the King of Pop MJ himself has passed on to join him!

Two of my all time favourite artists and performers the likely of which we may never see again in our lifetimes now sadly gone!

May God bless their souls and may their musical legacies forever live on!

Geeezzzzzz , I'm still trying to get over our local musical genius $hek $hok's passing and now this!!  :'(

Web slows after Jackson's death
By Maggie Shiels
Technology reporter, BBC News, Silicon Valley

Google error page
The sheer number of queries concerned Google

The internet suffered a number of slowdowns as people the world over rushed to verify accounts of Michael Jackson's death.

Search giant Google confirmed to the BBC that when the news first broke it feared it was under attack.

Millions of people who Googled the star's name were greeted with an error page rather than a list of results.

It warned users "your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application".

"It's true that between approximately 2.40PM Pacific and 3.15PM Pacific, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson and saw the error page," said Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker.

It was around this time that the singer was officially pronounced dead.

Google's trends page showed that searches for Michael Jackson had reached such a volume that in its so called "hotness" gauge the topic was rated "volcanic".

The BBC news website reported that traffic to the site at 0400 BST was 48% higher than average.

Fail

Google was not the only company overwhelmed by the public's clamour for information.

The microblogging service Twitter crashed with the sheer volume of people using the service.
Google user graph
Searches for topics related to Michael Jackson peaked at 3PM Pacific

Queries about the star soon rocketed to the top of its updates and searches. But the amount of traffic meant it suffered one of its well-known outages.

Before the company's servers crashed, TweetVolume noted that "Michael Jackson" appeared in more than 66,500 Twitter updates.

According to initial data from Trendrr, a Web service that tracks activity on social media sites, the number of Twitter posts Thursday afternoon containing "Michael Jackson" totaled more than 100,000 per hour.

That put news of Jackson's death at least on par with the Iran protests, as Twitter posts about Iran topped 100,000 per hour on June 16 and eventually climbed to 220,000 per hour.

Early reports of Mr Jackson's death and the confusion surrounding it caused a rash of changes and corrections to be made on his Wikipedia page as editors tried to keep up with events and the number of people trying to update the page.

TMZ, the popular celebrity gossip site that broke the story following a tip-off that a paramedic had visited the singers home also crashed.

There was a domino effect as users then fled to other sites. Hollywood gossip writer Perez Hilton's site was among those to flame out.

Keynote Systems reported that its monitoring showed performance problems for the web sites of AOL, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and Yahoo.

Beginning at 2.30PM Pacific "the average speed for downloading news sites doubled from less than four seconds to almost nine seconds," said Shawn White, Keynote's director of external operations.

He told Data Center Knowledge that "during the same period, the average availability of sites on the index dropped from almost 100% to 86%".

I have seen people who have it and is not something that a performer would want...if they are self conscious

The man had vitiligo and said so publicly. He looked like hundreds of thousands of other people with his condition. The condition is not particularly rare and I would think that most black/indian people would know at least one person affected by it. Why responsible media sources and otherwise intelligent people persisted with this bull$h!t skin bleaching nonsense is beyond me.

He definitely had it. If you look at interviews from the 70's you see very splotchy pink/purple cheeks (plus a lot of acne). He was clearly troubled by his appearance and used to cake on makeup to give him and even skin tone.

Arab world mourns Michael Jackson
AP, Jun 27, 2009 3:06 pm PDT

A Bahraini royal mourned him publicly, young Lebanese held a candlelight tribute, Egyptian musicians hailed him as an inspiration. Beyond his global reach, Michael Jackson held a special place in the Muslim world, as one of the first major Western entertainers to break through cultural barriers in the 1980s.

Some made a connection with the pop icon because of rumors, never substantiated, that he had converted to Islam.

Others embraced him as one of their own after he sought refuge in the Gulf emirate of Bahrain in 2005, following a bruising trial on child molestation charges in the U.S.

"God have mercy on him. He was a Bahraini. He lived with us," said Jassim Ali, 35, shopping for Jackson CDs on Saturday in a music store in the capital, Manama.

Jackson only spent a year in the emirate, as a guest of Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Isa Al Khalifa, a son of Bahrain's king and an aspiring songwriter who had befriended the entertainer. Jackson kept a low profile there, largely staying close to his host.

After Jackson's departure, the sheik sued Jackson for $7 million, saying he had failed to fulfill a joint music venture, but the two settled in November, with terms not disclosed.

The sheik said Saturday, in a statement in the Gulf Daily News, that "the world has lost a giant in the music industry."
"We are all very saddened by that," Al Khalifa said in comments confirmed by his spokesman.

Across the Arab world, the tributes to Jackson, who died Thursday, mirrored those elsewhere around the globe, though some argued the singer had a special appeal in the region.

"Religion is a big part of identity in this part of the world, and the idea he became Muslim boosted his popularity," said Egyptian cultural critic Tarek el-Shinnawi.

The conversion rumors were fueled, in parts, by comments by Jackson's brother, Jermaine, a convert to Islam, who has said his brother showed interest in the faith. In November, a British tabloid claimed Michael Jackson converted at a friend's home in Los Angeles.

The Jackson brothers were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses.

Others simply loved Michael Jackson for his music. At his peak, in the 1980s, a time without Internet and satellite TV, the Arab world was more shielded from Western pop culture. Jackson was one of the few successful crossover artists.
In Egypt, keyboarder and music distributor Fady Badr traveled to Alexandria to take a few days off work to come to terms with the pop star's death.

"He's the reason I got into this business," said 28-year old Badr. "Everything he did was new, he had such a power of voice and style; this industry would wait for his new ideas to get us inspired."

A manager of the Cairo Jazz Club, Shady Hamza, said that he was flooded by calls from local bands and musicians to help arrange a tribute night to the singer.

"I feel like I lost a brother," said Hamza, 30. "He turned so many of us into the whole music thing — for a lot of musicians, Michael Jackson was their first encounter."

In Lebanon, about 100 young fans lit candles and sang along to his songs in a downtown street lined with bars and restaurants. A few tried to moon walk while others cheered.

Qays al Zu'bi, a Bahraini lawyer who said he helped Jackson with his finances when he lived in the emirate, said the singer had qualities about him that endeared him to people in the region, including his close relationship with his children and his vision.

"He had an aura about him," said the lawyer. "Despite the scandal in the United States, I saw mothers at the lobby of his hotel who brought their children to introduce them to Michael Jackson."

From the White House Files: A Fight Over Michael Jackson
By Charlie Savage

The death of Michael Jackson on Thursday recalled his brush a quarter century ago with an aide to President Ronald Reagan — John G. Roberts Jr., who would go on to become chief justice of the United States. Mr. Roberts, it appears, was not the King of Pop’s biggest fan in the White House.

Mr. Jackson had visited the White House on May 16, 1984, and appeared with Mr. Reagan at an event on efforts against drunken driving. The following month, according to files released in 2005 during Mr. Roberts’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, the White House was asked to contribute a letter from Mr. Reagan recognizing the pop singer’s work.

It was to be published in a special issue of Billboard magazine devoted to Mr. Jackson, alongside photos from the White House event, in a section about his “volunteer activities and the national recognition of his achievements.” A correspondence aide at the White House, James K. Coyne, drafted a somewhat goofy letter that he proposed having Mr. Reagan sign.

It would have read:

Dear Michael:

Your visit to the White House was a real “thriller” for all of us here in the Nation’s Capital. In fact, the White House staff are still humming “Beat It” and “Billy Jean” and wondering how they’ll get tickets to one of your concerts this summer.

Your award last month was a tribute to your accomplishments in the entertainment business, but it was especially intended to recognize your generous support for our national initiative against drunk driving. This support for a cause that deeply affects so many young people is in line with your demonstrated concern for the public interest. I want to commend you on the very effective help you are giving us in persuading young people that drinking and driving do not mix.

Nancy and I send you our very best wishes for every future success and happiness.

On June 20, 1984, Mr. Coyne forwarded the proposed letter office of then-White House Counsel Fred Fielding, where Mr. Roberts, then a young associate White House counsel, was assigned to review it.

Mr. Roberts expressed acid disapproval in a June 22, 1984, memorandum to Mr. Fielding:

I recognize that I am something of a vox clamans in terris in this area, but enough is enough. The Office of Presidential Correspondence is not yet an adjunct of Michael Jackson’s PR firm. “Billboard” can quite adequately cover the event by reproducing the award citation and/or reporting the President’s remarks. (As you know, there is very little to report about Mr. Jackson’s remarks.) There is absolutely no need for an additional presidential message. A memorandum for Presidential Correspondence objecting to the letter is attached for your review and signature.

The files indicate that Mr. Fielding agreed, signing the draft memorandum Mr. Roberts had written rejecting the request to have Reagan sign the letter.

But the battle was not over. Three months later, a second set of files show, the White House’s Office of Private Sector Initiatives drafted a letter from Mr. Reagan that would send greetings to Mr. Jackson as he came through Washington the following weekend for two “Victory Tour” concerts with his brothers.

Mr. Jackson’s manager, Frank M. Dileo, had sent Mr. Reagan a letter inviting him to come to the opening night at RFK Stadium, saying that the dates in Washington “have been added to the Jacksons’ tour per your request on The White House Lawn this past spring.”

The proposed letter from Reagan would politely decline the invitation, but thank Mr. Jackson for providing 400 tickets to underprivileged children. In a separate memorandum, Mr. Coyne also proposed that such a letter could go on to invite “Michael and his brothers to the White House for an informal tour and reception. James Coyne will assist in arranging details, look forward to meeting him again and meeting his brothers.”

The draft was again routed to Mr. Roberts for review, and he again expressed exasperated disapproval:

I hate to sound like one of Mr. Jackson’s records, constantly repeating the same refrain, but I recommend that we not approve this letter. Sometimes people need to be reminded of the obvious: whatever its status as a cultural phenomenon, the Jackson concert tour is a massive commercial undertaking. The tour will do quite well financially by coming to Washington, and there is no need for the President to applaud such enlightened self-interest. Frankly, I find the obsequious attitude of some members of the White House staff toward Mr. Jackson’s attendants, and the fawning posture they would have the President of the United States adopt, more than a little embarrassing.

It is also important to consider the precedent that would be set by such a letter. In today’s Post there were already reports that some youngsters were turning away from Mr. Jackson in favor of a newcomer who goes by the name “Prince,” and is apparently planning a Washington concert. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:  Will he receive a Presidential letter? How will we decide which performers do and which do not?

Mr. Roberts once again also drafted a memo in Mr. Fielding’s name for his boss to sign rejecting the proposal. It repeated Mr. Roberts’s points with a twist:

I recommend that no such letter be sent. The Jackson tour, whatever stature it may have attained as a cultural phenomenon, is a massive commercial undertaking. The visit of the tour to Washington was not an eleemosynary gesture; it was a calculated commercial decision that does not warrant gratitude from our Nation’s Chief Executive. Such a letter would also create a bad precedent, as other popular performers would either expect or demand similar treatment. Why, for example, was no letter sent to Mr. Bruce Springsteen, whose patriotic tour recently visited the area? Finally, the President, in my view, has done quite enough in the way of thanking and congratulating the Jacksons, and anything more would begin to look like unbecoming fawning.

That appeared to end the matter.

UPDATE: As an addendum, Reagan had sent a letter to Mr. Jackson shortly after the singer’s hair was burned during a January 1984 accident on the set of a Pepsi commercial. Harper’s Magazine published the letter in its June 2009 issue (subscription only), and a reader reproduced it here.

In addition, it is worth noting that Mr. Roberts and Mr. Jackson had some things in common. Mr. Roberts was born in 1955 and grew up in Long Beach, Indiana. Mr. Jackson was born in 1958 less than an hour’s drive away, in Gary.

I haven't bothered to read every post on this thread but I would encourage those who haven't seen MJ's interview with Oprah to download it.

Go to www.torrentz.com

and search it.

I found it very enlightening and he debunked many rumours about him. You could see the pain in the man face as he asked people not to believe all the gossip they read.

Now, I am not aware of MJ actually being convicted of molesting young boys.

But he said something that blew me away.

He lacked love as a child and  an actual childhood because of the demands of a career. Because of this he tried to compensate by having great things as an adult, eg. Never Land. In addition he surrounded himself with kids and tried to shower them with love, eg. having terminally ill kids come to Neverland on weekends.

He mentioned having kids sleep with him. (Not in the Oprah interview). He added that he would tuck them in and go to bed. Now maybe this is something you don't want a stranger doing with your kids.

But what blew me away, was that as a kid, I had horrible relationship with my parents. I also never got to do some of the things I wanted to do - because of a lack of money - and it hurt when you saw the other kids doing it.

As an adult I am extra sweet to children, remembering my own childhood. I have had younger brothers, cousins etc sleep in my bed. I tucked them in and gave them a hug or kiss goodnight. And I eh no damn molester.

Now I probably wouldn't do this with a stranger's child sleeping over because in today's world ppl too paranoid and I cah blame dem. But if I had, and ppl had wrongfully accused me, that is a stigma that doesn't go away.

I find myself wanting to buy certain toys as an adult just because I miss out as a child. And I swear I always say if I have enough dough, I go do something extra special for orphans in TT.

Now I have never spoken publicly - ever - about my tribulations as a child. But when MJ spoke about why he surrounded himself with kids and did what he did - I could see the rationale.

I eh go defend or accuse the man on a topic of which I have no evidence.

But in the Oprah interview he seemed like a sweet, misunderstood man.

Peace,
VB

People killing dey self and ting! As in literal suicide? WHEEYYY  :rotfl:

MICHAEL Jackson's death has reportedly led at least a dozen people to kill themselves worldwide while Australians seek help from a suicide prevention hotline.  (http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,28383,25712012-5019114,00.html)

Quote
Some callers to Lifeline Australia, which speaks to about 50 suicidal people each day, have told counsellors that Jackson's death on Friday had left them distressed.

London man Gary Taylor, who owns the biggest Michael Jackson online fan club, said he was aware of about 12 suicides following the performer's death, Sky News UK reports.

"It is a serious situation that these people are going through but Michael Jackson would never want this," Mr Taylor said.

"He would want them to live."

Lifeline CEO Dawn O'Neil said that while there has not been "a dramatic increase" in calls to counsellors since Friday, people have spoken about how Jackson's death has affected them.

"We have had some calls related to this," Ms O’Neil said.

"In some cases, (a celebrity's death) can be very distressing."

The calls came as a friend to the famous family, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, urged fans not to "self-destruct".

"This is a time when hearts are heavy," Jackson said. "There is great pain but great cause to celebrate Michael's life.

"It made Michael happy saying 'We Are The World'. Don't self destruct."

Ms O'Neil said it was important for people to discuss how they feel in times of death.

"With any loss or death, everyone grieves in their own way," she said.

"Find someone to talk to… it certainly is important to talk to someone."

She said speaking to friends, family, counsellors or their doctor could help people in grief.

Michael Jackson Breaks Billboard Charts Records

June 30, 2009 10:58 PM ET

As predicted, Michael Jackson is once again the King of the Pop charts.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the entire top nine positions on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart will house Jackson-related titles when the tally is released in the early morning on Wednesday (July 1). Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28) night.

Jackson himself has a record eight out of the top 10, while a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier.

The King of Pop's "Number Ones" will fittingly lead the pack at No. 1 with 108,000 (an increase of 2,340%) while "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" are in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots with 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. Last week "Number Ones" was the only Jackson title on the chart, at No. 20 with 4,000 copies; both "Essential" and "Thriller" re-enter the tally this week.

Additionally, his classic 1979 studio set "Off the Wall" re-enters at No. 4 with 33,000 while his 1987 album "Bad" returns at No. 6 with 17,000. At No. 5, the Jackson 5's "The Ultimate Collection" debuts with 18,000. Jackson's fourth studio album for Epic Records, 1991's "Dangerous," re-enters at No. 7 with 14,000 while his 2001 compilation "Greatest Hits: HIStory -- Volume 1" also comes back to the list at No. 8 with 12,000. Finally, Jackson's 2004 box set "The Ultimate Collection" charts its first week on the Pop Catalog chart, arriving at No. 9 with 11,000.

The lone non-Jackson-related set in the top 10 is a reissue of the "Woodstock" movie soundtrack, which bows at No. 10 with 8,000.

Collectively, Jackson's solo albums sold 415,000 this past week. That's extraordinary, since his titles sold a combined 10,000 in the week that ended June 21. Of the 415,000 total, 58% were digital downloads.

Additionally, the 415,000 albums sold just last week is nearly 40% more than what Jackson's catalog had sold the the entire year up through June 21 (297,000).

Speaking of digital albums, on the Top Digital Albums chart, Jackson has a record six out of the top 10 slots, including the entire top four. "The Essential Michael Jackson" leads the Top Digital Albums list with 80,000 downloads sold, while "Thriller" is No. 2 with 57,000.

With the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." moving back to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart with 88,000, this week marks the first time that a catalog album has sold more than the No. 1 current set on the Billboard 200 albums chart. (All three of Jackson's top sellers on the Pop Catalog chart outsell "The E.N.D.")

Ironically, the feat almost occurred when Jackson re-issued "Thriller" in February 2008. The set relaunched with 166,000, re-entering at No. 1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart. That week, Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" led the Billboard 200 chart with 180,000 while Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" was at No. 2 with 115,000.

Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 albums chart, though they can chart on the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums list. On the latter chart, Jackson's "Number Ones," "Essential" and "Thriller" are at Nos. 1-3, followed by the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." at No. 4.

Jackson places a record 25 songs on the 75-position Hot Digital Songs chart (21 solo hits and four with his siblings), smashing the mark of 14 charting titles established by David Cook in the June 7, 2008 issue. Jackson's Halloween radio staple, "Thriller," moves 167,000, which is good for second place on the chart behind the 203,000 shifted by the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling."

"Thriller" was also Jackson's best seller in the week before his death with 5,000 downloads, which translates to a 3,551% jump. Jackson's total volume of downloads this week -- including his tracks with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons -- account for 2.6 million downloads, a remarkable number considering last week's cumulative sum was 48,000. Moreover, Jackson becomes the first act to sell more than 1 million song downloads in a week.

Besides "Thriller," Jackson places five other songs in the top 10 including "Man In The Mirror" (No. 3, 165,000), "Billie Jean" (No. 4, 158,000), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (No. 6, 136,000), "Beat It" (No. 7, 134,000) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (No. 8, 125,000).

Not surprisingly, each of the tracks in the top 10 of Hot Digital Songs were among the top 10 most-played Jackson selections at radio following his passing. According to research provided by Nielsen BDS of monitored airplay from over 1,600 terrestrial and satellite radio stations and cable music channels, "Billie Jean" was the Jackson track with the most spins for the week ending June 28 with 4,540 -- 97% of which occurred after news of his death became public. The track posted only 318 plays in the prior week.

MICHAEL Jackson's two eldest kids face a tug-of-love battle after their mum Debbie Rowe confessed he was not their father.

In an astonishing interview Debbie - mother of Prince, 12, and Paris, 11 - said she was artificially inseminated by an anonymous donor.

And she told how, despite Jackson's death, she does not WANT custody of the children and NEVER expects to see them again.

EXCERPTS:
Debbie (who lives on a farm surrounded by animals) said, ""I was just the vessel. It wasn't Michael's sperm. Just like I stick the sperm up my horse, this is what they did to me. I was his thoroughbred."....

After Debbie gave birth to second child Paris, she couldn't have kids again, "The delivery was so hard. My insides were all torn up and I was barren. When he knew I couldn't have any more babies he didn't want anything to do with me."

Debbie says she will not fight for custody of Prince Michael or Paris, "I know I will never see them again. I was never cut out to be a mother - I was no good. I don't want these children in my life. My children are my animals now."

way too much coverage  .. . all driven by public demand.  People need to re-evaluate their priorities, or maybe this is a form of escapism and the obsession with the life and times of MJ is a coping mechanism to forget life's trials?

For F&^&*&*^& sake, done de shit nah. The man dead let him rest in peace. Most people they interview after these alleged crimes always said the accusers liked living it up large off the man money and only made accusations when the friendship stopped. I am so frigging tired of reading all the catty comments, some of allyuh men would make real good women with your bitchiness. He dead, done all the crap. it bad enough every friggin day another allegation or 10 floating around in the media. Some claim the kids not his own, some say they are. Can you imagine how these poor kids must be feeling if they even hear a tiny bit of the crap being said? Doctors now confirming that days before he died he had a cancer lesion removed from his face. I dont belive that plastic surgery caused the cancer so who is to say that he didnt have he cancer before and then started doing the nose to hide the surgery scars? Enough is enough. He dead. Let the shit go. If not for him, do it for the fact that there are three young children that as far as everyone says, had a really great father in him. I have yet to hear anyone say he was a bad father. Eccentric -  yes, perhaps a little over protective -yes. Momentary lapse of judgement in trying to show fans his young son from a balcony - yes.  But everyone, even his worst critics, say he was a good father.  Talk done.

And VB ...... really really really great post.

Friends jet off to LA to pay last respects

Camille Bethel cbethel@trinidadexpress.com
Saturday, July 4th 2009

Like so many of Michael Jackson's fans, they flew thousands of miles just to pay their respects. Trinidadians Jacqueline Ramoutarsingh and her friend, Chrissie Amar, left Trinidad on Wednesday and arrived in Los Angeles at 2 a.m. on Thursday just to be a part of the memorial that is taking place outside the Jackson family home in Encino, Los Angeles.

The women have appeared on the CNN news channel and other media, grieving outside the Jackson family home. Ramoutarsingh said the experience was sad and surreal.

"It's heart-breaking but it is also an amazing experience, beyond words. We brought a big banner and hung it at the home where he passed away that said: 'From all your Trinidad and Tobago fans, we love you'," she said.

She said it was amazing to see the outpouring of love at the various makeshift memorial sites from people outside of the US.

"There are people here from all over the world, just paying their respects," she said.

Ramoutarsingh said she and Amar have always been huge fans of Jackson and thought that they would finally get to see him perform live during his "comeback tour" scheduled to start this month in London-but it was not meant to be.

"I have every single one of his records and always wanted to see him perform. We spent a lifetime listening to his music and already had our tickets for the concert in London."

She said she and Amar had originally planned to return to Trinidad earlier, but upon learning that Jackson's funeral will be held on Tuesday, they changed their flight so that they could stay on and experience all of it.

"I couldn't see him alive, but I want to see him," she said. The two women also plan to make the three-hour trip to Jackson's Neverland Ranch during their stay

I think for the first time ever I saw the Jacksons as people and not characters in a decades-long tv-show.

I still can't completely ignore the rumours and allegations, but like Sharpton say, Michael Jackson wasn't a strange man, what was strange was what he had to deal with.

I wasn't available for the TV broadcast, but I heard audio of Sharpton being interviewed following the memorial and he was more insightful and incisive than ever before ... perhaps departing into hyperbole and self-inflation only once during the proceeding.

Nonetheless, listening to him, I realized history is likely to be kinder to Sharpton than is public perception, and if nothing else, that's one lesson to be absorbed from Michael Jackson's passing.

Nah prolly Elvis would still be rolling in his grave OR drop down dead when he found out MJ is/was his son-in-law ... and owned rights to his shit ... there would only be ONE concert that night

P.S.

"Jackson owned half of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a jewel estimated to be worth $2 billion by itself. The 750,000-song catalogue includes music by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Lady Gaga and the Jonas Brothers. "
http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/2009/06/26/9949591-ap.html
no mention of Elvis music

Addendum:
then I read here that Elvis music is included
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony/ATV_Music_Publishing

one thing i found out ws that most of the Elvis stuff was written by other people, where as Michael wrote most of his own material

it would not be a fair fight ;D

Elvis fans would be motoring as fast as they can with their walkers
(http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/medicalproductsdirect_2058_210120718)

I feel the King of Pop would take it
yah talking shit ,nobody have a discography like Elvis jed ..nobody .

We are not aruging about discography but about who's concert will fill their stadium first but as you bring up discography guest who also owns that?!  ;D

MJ the undispute King of Pop, no argument, no contest!!

Btw WestCoast, yuh really think that walker could help loyal Elvis fans like Quagmire to keep up!?  :rotfl:
I did not realise that 50 shows were actually SOLD OUT in London when they were put on sale

I recall the original argument in this thread was who would sell out their stadium first if both MJ and Elvis were still alive and had concerts on the same night in the same town!
Now you trying to create a whole new argument all together!  ::)
At any rate Elvis would definitely need a walker to perform now if he was still alive!

Btw is news to me that Elvis had no.1s in every gene and note that most of his songs were either covers or written by other folks!

At least MJ wrote most of his own songs and even tried his hand at soca when he visited T&T to performed in the 70's. I believe he sung Kitch’s “Sugar Bum Bum” during his T&T concert performance!
Can we say Elvis ever tried his hand at soca?  ;)

MJ is dubbed the King of Pop because he is the best selling most POPular artist in music history!

Elvis was dubbed the King in reference to Rock & Roll but I am sure some of the real Rock & Roll pioneers like Little Richard, Chuck Berry & Fats Domino will have something to say about that if you were able to speak with them.  8)

Yeah...the majority of the songs on 2 of his 7 albums ("Off the wall" and "Thriller") were written by other writers. However the majority of all his hit songs were written by him.

No Rabbit, WestCost is correct!
MOST of MJ's stuff was either written or co-written by him over 50% starting from the Off The Wall album coming up from the time he went solo. In addition a lot of the stuff on The Jackons albums like Destiny, Triumph, Victory, etc was also written or co-written by MJ.

In contrast most of Elvis' stuff was written by others (mainly black rock & roll writers) and the balance (no more than 20% if that much) was co-written by him.

I've got most of MJ's albums and if the credits are true then MJ was the writer of most of his hits!

Come on WestCoast, of course MJ was also a black man when he died but I am just trying to humorously use a line from one of his hit songs to dismiss Quagmire's claim that folks here are mainly backing MJ because he is black!

The Glove was used to hide his vitiligo

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/07/09/michael.jackson.glove/ (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/07/09/michael.jackson.glove/)

Actress Cicely Tyson, a friend of Jackson's, said the two shared a fashion designer in the 1980s.

"All of a sudden, he said, 'I'm doing this glove for Michael,' " she said. "Michael was beginning to develop the vitiligo and it started on his hand.

"The glove was to cover the vitiligo; that's how that glove came into being."

Jackson's dermatologist, Dr. Arnie Klein, told CNN that Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease that causes blotches of lightening skin, as well as a form of lupus that led to rashes and flaking of skin on his scalp.

"His was bad because he began to get a speckled look over his body," Klein said. "All over his body -- but on his face and hands, which is hard to treat."

It's a report that rings true to others with the disease.

"I have to wear sleeves and carry an umbrella," said Lee Thomas, who wrote a memoir called "Turning White," which discusses his physical and mental struggles as an African-American man whose skin changes because of vitiligo. "It totally makes sense to me."

Thomas, an Emmy-winning television journalist in Detroit, Michigan, told CNN that he shares a habit with Jackson.

"I got [white spots] on one of my hands, so I used to wear a glove to hold a microphone," he said.

Dr. James Norlund, a dermatologist, never treated Jackson, but said the singer's use of the gloves and lipstick was consistent with the patterns of vitiligo, since the spots frequently first appear on the hands and face, including the lips.

Klein said he treated Jackson's vitiligo with a cream that eventually bleached Jackson's darker pigmentation to even out his skin color. He said it was that treatment -- not a once-rumored desire by Jackson to be white -- that lightened his skin over the years.

"Michael was black," Klein said. "He was very proud of his black heritage."

MJ being the best selling artist of all time and consequently being dubbed “The King of Pop” has nothing to do with my or your opinion my friend! The title is given to him based on total record sales figures around the planet, it’s that simple! Is this really so difficult for you to understand?

Whether some folks like yourself love or hate MJ as a personality has absolutely nothing to do with the sales figures which clearly shows he's the best selling most POPular artist of all time hence being dubbed “The King of Pop”!

No need to get personal about my avatar & me possibly being related to Bubbles!  8)

Just a bit of info for you!

MJ claims that James Brown was one of his biggest idols/inspirations and that the hair straightening and great dance moves were done mainly to emulate the “God Father of Soul”!

MJ also admitted in interviews that the main reasons that he had the nose jobs done was as a professional move to help maintain his high pitch singing voice as he got older! This was not discouraged by the fact that he was regularly humiliated by his father about his broad nose while he was growing up!

Also note that his sisters Janet and LaToya also had similar nose jobs done so there is something in that explanation about his Dad’s abuse maybe affecting him and his sisters to have nose jobs done once they got older with plastic surgery being so popular in the Hollywood environment and all that! Who knows, he was only human! :peace:

I hope this post is not directed towards me otherwise you are convincing me that you are either a bit slow or out to simply waste my time!

I believe I have already given you the facts about why MJ's title as "The King of Pop" is most appropriate, him being the most POPular/best selling artist of all time and all that! It doesn't really matter who gave him the title, the point is it is a title that reflects the truth based on his records sales figures!

I done with this topic for now, if some folks are happy to continuously live in denial and are determined not give Jack his jacket then that’s their problem!  8)

P.S.
No where in this discussion thread have I argued that MJ is the greatest artist ever even though many folks would attest to that! MJ as Greatest Entertainer Ever yep he's defintely up there alongside James Brown but calling him the Greatest Artist Ever, I believe is debateable!

Please note Greatest Artist Ever and Greatest Entertainer Ever are two different topics!

For example here are some Great Caribbean artists:
Kitchener, Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Shadow, Shorty, David Rudder, Bob Marley, Eddy Grant

Now here are some Great Caribbean Entertainers:
Machel Montano, Denise Belfon, Beenie Man, Capelton.

See the difference?

Most great artists are also great entertainers but not all great entaintainers are automatically great artists!

Cheers  :beermug:

Some of the excesses failed to improve the core story, which is reproduced here 99 percent intact, with most of the lesser warts still in place.

The very reticent Claude Martineau has been in promotions, ironically, for almost all his teenage and adult life.
In his time, he has promoted fetes and brought National Music Supplies Ltd to commercial success. A couple of years ago, he and his brother Frank formed a company called Spektakula Promotions, and along with some other capable individuals, brought Millie Jackson, Ace Cannon and Jimmy Smith to local audiences in quick succession.
On the night of February 22, 1978, they executed their coup de grace, with the arrival of The Jacksons in Trinidad and Tobago. This is the story of what happened while they were here, and it is, ultimately, a story about us.

Meeting the people
It took quite a while to catch up with The Jacksons. On the second night of their stay, a special function was held for them to meet with local musicians. It started out, and remained, a social affair, with attitudes ranging from those who wanted to chat with each and every one of the Jacksons as soon as possible, for as long as possible, to those who stood to one side and were conspicuously cool.
Little Randy Jackson's face looked like it was modelled after Dennis the Menace and he was frantically bored. He drifted uncomfortably from brother to brother, eventually drifting into earshot.
"Is there going to be a show tonight?" he was asking plaintively.
Then Penny.
Instant melee.
All man Jack want penny autograph, want to take out picture with Penny. Photographer moves in. Excuse me Mr Trotman. Bill? Could you move a little to one side? Please?
"I ain't moving! Look Michael there, move him nah. Look Marlon there, move him nah. But no. Is always excuse me Mr Trotman, would you step to one side Bill. No! I tell you I ain't moving."
Who can argue with that logic?

Performance

Some of us remembered The Stylistics from way back when. But their performance is just a fuzzy memory of flashy movements. The Jacksons were real, immediate, and very, very slick.
The Jacksons perform three kinds of song, crawling mushy ballads (Ben, Got to be there) medium-paced, loping numbers (Let me show you the way to go, I wanna be where you are) and scintillating high-energy soul (I want you back, Enjoy yourself).
The audience lapped it all up, but it was their old hits that really scored, which offers some kind of indicator as to who their audience really was. Not today's reggae-disco swayed youngsters, but the people who were young when The Jacksons were younger. The grown-up kids who grooved to I want you back and ABC.
The show, of course, was Michael's. The others had their own individual appeal, but it was Michael who strutted and skipped to the delighted approval of the crowd. His is the honeyed-sweet voice that lances through the heart with almost surgical precision, dragging songs like I'll be there and Never can say goodbye back from the borderline of mediocrity and cliché.
Then, with appropriately theatrical buildup, they unleashed their gift to Trinidad and Tobago, a respectful facsimile of Lord Kitchener's Sugar Bum Bum. Randy, with impish sprightliness ran out from behind his congas, grabbed the microphone in fine Elvis style and began to sing with the cutest lisp: "Orgeee, way you get that sugahhh."
And there was The Sun's Keith Smith, holding his pate, looking up to the heavens for a sign and bawling, "This can't be happening, this ain't true, ah must be dreaming."
It was total pandemonium. But the Jacksons, savouring the novelty of the rhythms, carefully let the band carry most of it, wisely recognising their limitations in front of the Trinidadian audience.
By the time the group reached the end of their show, encoring with Enjoy Yourself, enjoyment had become frenzied excitement and a winin' grinin' mob prepared to show their appreciation.

Goin' places
Travelling with the Jacksons is quite an exercise, one that precludes sleep and regular meals. Cliché or not, their routine is proof that the price of success is high.
Their first request when they came to Trinidad was reported to be a desire to "see the children." They saw children all right. In north and later, south Trinidad, they were besieged by screaming, squealing and (dare I say it?) lusting children in a warming mass eager to grab and touch and grip.
These were cute little girls, but when they began to crowd together and brush against each other, some mysterious savagery wakes in each young palpitating breast and they surged and pushed forward with an ominous gleam of desire in every eye.

Entering Port of Spain after leaving San Fernando, we stopped at the Morvant Junction for the red light. Two children in scruffy khaki pants and ill-fitting, buttonless shirts were about to cross the road. One casts a casual eye at the big at the big black car. His eyes opened wide, then half-closed with suspicion.
The window of the car slides down and Marlon waves.
The child's eyes open wide again and he manages a half-hearted wave back. He fidgets from foot to foot, smiling nervously. The light changes. The window slides back up. The car roars off.

In Las Cuevas, the fishermen in the village look on with bemusement at the crowds who managed to find out where the Jacksons were closed in on their quarry and jostled to chat, take pictures and get autographs.
Eventually, someone thought of telling the villagers that Michael Jackson was in their midst.
Michael who?
Jackson.
Who's he?
But Michael revelled in his anonymity, walking around and chatting with the fishermen, looking at their battered boats and taking photos, soaking in the experience.

Michael is standing at the top of Picton Road in Laventille. He's here as fulfilment of one of his requests. "I want to see the people in the slums, the people who couldn't pay to see our show." So we went. I am taking photos for a commission that will become prints in an album, one of many that the singer keeps of his travels.
It's sleepy at four in the afternoon. A basketball game is in play, the brothers working up a sweat. A few people are walking down the street. Rockers is blasting from a tiny shack that in the late evening haze seems to be swaying to the earthy, compelling beat.
The sun is dimming, the final heat of the day fading into the cool of dusk. A light breeze blows as Michael strolls down Picton Road.
Slowly, the casual expressions change. I hear the muttering.
"Look, is..."
"Nah, what he would be doing here?"
"Look, it have a photographer."
"Ah wonder if ah could talk to..."
"Oh me Gawd. And meh hair in curlers!"
Dumb shock was the order of the evening and people simply stood and shook Michael's hand.

It's a sunny Monday morning, the eve of the Jackson's departure. Schoolgirls in uniform, or half-in and half-out, matching fancy shirts with their school's official skirts are all lined off on the stairwell overlooking the pool, staring at Michael's every stroke in the pool.
Not even the Hilton's harassed security guards could prevent Michael from visibly wincing under their unrelenting gaze as he swam around the pool with uncomfortable grace.
A richly textured American accent rings out from the fence overlooking the pool: "Hey Michael! Come on up by the fence, we wantcha ta sign some ortergraphs."
Michael does not respond to the young schoolgirl's call.

Aftermath
Champagne and caviar
A black limousine chauffeured car
Trips all around the world
I have my choice of many girls
People lined up as far as you can see
Standing in line, just to see me
-Mama, got a brand new thing

The little girl was sitting just outside the lobby of the Hilton. She couldn't have been more than 12 years old and she was crying, sobs racking her body into little convulsions. I sat down next to her.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
Between sobs, she told me that she had been waiting ever since eight in the morning to see The Jacksons and she hadn't been able to catch more than a glimpse of them. It was six in the evening by then, and I knew that she didn't stand a chance of seeing them again that day. I desperately wanted to tell her something, but what could I say that would make a difference?
I got up quietly and walked off.
The security car was just revving up as I got in, and I heard a voice should after us.
"Mister, Mister."
The little girl was running up to the car with her autograph book. I froze in a moment of indecision. What to do? Stop the car and take the book from her?
The car rolls down the hill, and her tear-streaked face grows smaller in the rear window.

"I was actually at the Hilton and was able to observe the Jackson boys calmly stroll through a pack of teens too busy looking for them to actually see them. Whose autographs did they really get?"
Joan Christopher, writing in The Express.

Why did young girls camp out at the Hilton, even going so far as to knock on door after door in search of The Jacksons? That little girl was one of many who spent hours prowling the corridors of the hotel in vain.
Offstage, there is really nothing spectacular about the group of young men. They are so predictable and controlled that they end up coming off a bit dull.
At one point, I tried a spot interview asking, "How do you feel about the country?"
Michael: "Oh we love it, it's beautiful."
Marlon: "It's beautiful, we love it."
Michael seemed the hardest hit of all The Jacksons by the plight of his desperate fans. His shy, sensitive eyes and soft, almost lyrical speaking voice reveals a genuine concern for his fans, most of them girls his age and younger.
But if he gives in to a whim, he gets torn apart.

Fifteen seconds of fame
06/07/09 19:07 Filed in: BitDepth - July 2009
http://lyndersaydigital.com/bd/files/BitDepth687.html

Michael Jackson's gone and the tiniest of the questions that have been asked in the considerable wake of his passing is whether anyone in entertainment will ever be that big in the public consciousness again.
In 1968, American pop culture artist Andy Warhol famously said, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
In the Internet age, that's starting to sound like an eternity. The ability of any single person or event to capture our attention has always been a function of the efficiency of information dissemination and the capacity of popular media to expose large swaths of the public to the same data.
In less than three centuries, mass information transfer has consistently sped up. From years via word of mouth to weeks as transportation accelerated personal interactions, to days as newspapers published to hours for radio broadcasts to minutes for websites, text messages and e-mails.

The death of shared experience
With this proliferation and pace of modern media, and the explosion of options for its consumption, has come the death of shared experience. We no longer look at the same television shows, listen to the same radio Jackson or see the same movies.
This is a very different environment from the one that nurtured Michael Jackson. When the initial career surge that took his band of brothers to international success began to peter out, Jackson struck out on his own, bravely taking control of his career, leveraging 15 years of steady practice and staking his future on a new fangled idea – a new cable network that was running videos of musicians continuously.

His fame was built on not one, but two very different careers, the first as a talented curiosity in the first harmony boy band, the next fulfilling and advancing that promise.
The young Jackson must have looked at the lineup of performers on the early MTV and realised two things quickly. Most of the videos were awful, and all the performers were white.
So he trumped one with the other. His very first music video, for 'Don't stop till you get enough,' looks pretty lame today, but it was absolutely astonishing in its time, an expensive experiment with laser technology that pushed the cutting edge.

Crossover King
From there, he kept upping the ante on his competition until the video for the song Thriller, arguably the best music video ever made, seduced MTV into putting the young singer into the heaviest rotation of any black performer of the era. It was the making of both of them.
Thriller went on to become the biggest selling album of all time.
First he crossed the lines of radio, moving with his brothers from the R&B charts to the Pop charts, the equivalent of walking in a fancy hotel's front door in 1930's Tennessee. Then he triumphantly crossed over from radio to television reaching a new audience through music videos.
Michael Jackson's death holds the angst and impact that it does because of how deeply embedded he became in our lives through his savvy use of mass media.

Over 40 years, his music, dance moves, videos and personal theatrics have served as mileposts for a critical mass of people.
The 1988 Motown 25th anniversary performance in particular, during  which he dramatically unveiled the 'Moonwalk' remains a kind of touchstone even for people who didn't much care for him otherwise.
It's instructive to note that the only other entertainer to even come close to the sustained fame and interest that Michael Jackson stimulated is Madonna, who hewed close to the latter career path he blazed.
To become Michael Jackson today, you would need to have a career that lasted four decades with a consistent supply of hits, the ability to adapt effortlessly to new media and flourish in them and then have the kind of talent that makes people look twice.
Then you'd have to catch that lightning in a bottle, not just once, but twice.

Some new footage showing Michael's hair on fire during the Pepsi commercial in 1984.
Preliminary reports from his autopsy said that Michael was bald as a result of this incident, checkout the bare scalp as he is taken away.

You could be right, did you read this?

Also this could explain why MJ's hair was straight!

Its likely MJ was regularly wearing a wig in public as he may have gradually gone bald due to his burnt scalp from way back in 1984 when he was making the pepsi cola advert!!

Also add to this MJ’s Vitiligo skin condition and him being prescribed a special cream to whiten the darker patches of his skin so that the colour of his skin blends in with the whiter patches caused by his Vitiligo skin condition. This explains why it may have appeared to many that MJ was trying to turn himself white when in fact he was simply a victim of a skin condition, a terrible accident and circumstance!

The nose jobs are also understandable from what MJ explained in an interview as they were meant to help him to maintain his high pitch voice as he got older or so he was told by the plastic surgeon(s) involved! Add to that the jokes his father made about his broad nose when he was younger and it is quite understandable why MJ was happy to have the nose jobs done and of course the plastic surgeon(s) involved would have been keen to get paid!!

I see a pop star who was a victim of an accident with his hair, a vitiligo skin condition and circumstance and I suspect that what LaToya his sister is saying about MJ being slowly murdered by the vultures that surrounded him as quite probable!

Thank goodness that it turns out that MJ’s personal doctor was not a Trini as was first being claimed by some of the lazy T&T media that once again failed to do thorough research before making those claims!

bad was mjs best piece of writing for any of his albums as an artist, man in the mirror was co written by glen ballard, i too have all of mjs stuff, including my mom having the albums when he was a teenager. but people have to realize thriller was what made michael, michael, the video skyrocketed michs career into super stardum.

SO TRUE
By Maya Angelou

Tuesday I cried watching the Michael Jackson memorial.
I cried for a little black boy who felt the world didn't understand him.
I cried for a little black boy who spent his adulthood chasing his childhood.
And I thought about all the young black boys out there who may too feel
that the world doesn't understand them.
The ones who feel that the world does not understand their baggy jeans,
their swagger, their music, their anger, their struggles,
their fears or the chip on their shoulder.
I worry that my son, may too, one day will feel lonely in a wide, wide world.
I cried for the young children of all colors who may live their life feeling like a misfit,
feeling like no one understands their perspective, or their soul.
What a burden to carry.

As a mother, I cried for Katherine Jackson because no mother
should ever bury a child. Period.
And I think about all the pain, tears and sleepless nights
that she must have endured seeing her baby boy in inner pain,
seeing him struggle with his self-esteem,
and his insecurities and to know he often felt unloved even
while the world loved him deeply.
How does it feel to think that the unconditional love we give as mothers
just isn't enough to make our children feel whole?
I wonder if she still suffers thinking, "what more could I have done?"
Even moms of music legends aren't immune to mommy guilt, I suppose.

When Rev. Al Sharpton (who always delivers one hell of a funeral speech)
said to Michael's children, "Your daddy was not strange...
It was strange what your Daddy had to deal with," I thought of all the "strange"
things of the world that my children will have to deal with. Better yet,
the things I hope they won't ever have to deal with anymore.

And as a mother raising a young black boy,
I feel recommitted and yet a little
confused as to how to make sure my son is sure enough
within himself to take on the world.
Especially a "strange" one. To love himself enough to know
that even when the world doesn't understand you,
tries to force you into its mold or treats you unkindly,
you are still beautiful, strong and Black. How do I do that?

Today, I am taking back "childhood" as an inalienable right for every brown little one.
In a world, that makes children into booty-shaking, mini-adults long before their time,
I'm reclaiming the playful, innocent, run-around-outside,
childhood as the key ingredient in raising confident adults.
Second, I will not rest until my little black boy,
MY Michael, knows that his broad nose is beautiful,
his chocolately brown skin is beautiful, and his thick hair is beautiful.

And nothing or no one can ever take that away from him.

"Now aint we bad? And ain't we black? And ain't we fine? ---

The news today is he died of a lethal level of propofol (=deprivan) He was on 50mg. Dr. Murray claims he was trying to ween him with other drugs, but on the morning of his death he gave him 25mg and then left to make phone calls instead of monitoring him and came back to find him in cardiac arrest.

Coroner rules Michael Jackson death a homicide
Aug. 28, 2009, 1:54 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles County coroner says Michael Jackson's death was a homicide primarily caused by two drugs.

In a statement released Friday, the coroner said the cause of death was acute intoxication from the anesthetic propofol. Other sedatives contributed to the death, most notably lorazepam.

The coroner did not release Jackson's full autopsy report, citing an ongoing security hold at the request of Los Angeles authorities.

Dr. Conrad Murray, the pop star's personal physician, told police he gave Jackson propofol the morning of June 25 after a series of sedatives failed to help Jackson sleep. Murray is the target of what police term a manslaughter investigation.

The 50-year-old Jackson died June 25 in Los Angeles.A search warrant affidavit unsealed Monday in Houston includes a detailed account of what Murray told investigators.

According to the document, Murray said he'd been treating Jackson for insomnia for about six weeks with 50 milligrams of propofol every night via an intravenous drip. But he said he feared Jackson was forming an addiction to the anesthetic, which is normally used in hospitals only, and was attempting to wean his patient by lowering the dose to 25 milligrams and adding the sedatives lorazepam and midazolam.

That combination succeeded in helping Jackson sleep two days prior to his death, so the next day, Murray told detectives he cut off the propofol — and Jackson fell asleep with just the two sedatives.

Then around 1:30 a.m. on June 25, starting with a 10-milligram tab of Valium, Murray said he tried a series of drugs instead of propofol to make Jackson sleep. The injections included two milligrams of lorazepam around 2 a.m., two milligrams of midazolam around 3 a.m., and repeats of each at 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. respectively.

Murray told detectives that around 10:40 a.m. he gave in to Jackson's "repeated demands/requests" for propofol, which the singer referred to as his "milk." He administered 25 milligrams of the white-colored liquid, — a relatively small dose — and finally, Jackson fell asleep.

Murray remained with the sedated Jackson for about 10 minutes, then left for the bathroom. No more than two minutes later, he returned — and found Jackson had stopped breathing.

"There's no surprise there" that death could result from such a combination, said Dr. David Zvara, anesthesia chairman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"All those drugs act in synergy with each other," Zvara said. Adding propofol on top of all the other sedatives "tipped the balance."

The "This is it" movie is out  :beermug:

Michael Jackson's This is it
http://www.gamewellandtrulyover.com/2009/10/michael-jacksons-this-it-it.html

I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan, but as I've stated here before, I like a lot of his music. So when I heard about the "This is it" movie, I wasn't really interested in seeing it. To be honest, there was something a little unseemly about a documentary being put together so quickly after Jackson's death. And I was also turned off by the "in theatres for a limited time only" claim. So I didn't try to get tickets. And I had no intention of going. But I got sucked into the hype...

"This is it," is approximately 70% rehearsal footage and 30% documentary. The documentary parts are scattered throughout the film, and includes background dancers and musicians talking about how privileged they felt to perform with Jackson. There is also some insight into the planning of the concert, with Kenny Ortega and other head honchos discussing the concept and plans for different sections of the show. At times, Ortega comes across as a bit of an attention seeker, and quite frankly, he didn't need to be in this movie as much as he was. But I'll give him credit, because I suspect that everyone will walk out of this saying "that concert would have been amazing."

The song selection was very good. I can't think of any major omissions off the top of my head. Each song is an amalgamation of different rehearsal days, but it all looks and sounds seamless with the exception of clothing changes. As for Michael, there are no major surprises in terms of his personality. He's definitely a perfectionist, which should surprise no one. His singing was top notch, although he lip-synced a few songs. His dancing wasn't very expansive, although there were a few moonwalks here and there. If you're looking for dancing similar to the Motown 25th anniversary performance, this isn't for you.

The person who will probably benefit most from "This is it" is Orianthi, who was the guitarist who played Eddie Van Halen's part in Beat It, and the guitar melody in Black Or White. And she was excellent.

If you're a massive Michael Jackson fan, you're going to love this. If you're not, there's no real need to see it, though I suspect your curiosity may get the better of you.

Michael Jackson wins 4 American Music Awards LOS ANGELES — The King of Pop is still winning awards and setting records doing it.

But while Michael Jackson won a record four posthumous awards, he couldn't beat Taylor Swift for top honors at Sunday night's American Music Awards.

The 19-year-old was named the year's favorite artist, giving Jackson his only loss of the night, and giving her five trophies in all.

"Music has never been ultimately about competition," she said as she accepted the top prize via satellite from London, where she is to perform Monday. "To even be mentioned in a category with Michael Jackson, who we will miss and love forever, is an unimaginable honor."

The victories came during a performance-filled show that closed with an S&M-themed, sexually charged performance by Adam Lambert.

Swift was also named favorite female pop/rock and country artist and favorite adult-contemporary artist. Her album, "Fearless," won favorite country album. Jackson was voted favorite male artist in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. His 2003 greatest-hits album, "Number Ones," also won favorite album in both categories, bringing his career AMA total to 23, making him the most honored artist in AMA history.

Jackson's victories were among the highlights of the evening, which also featured an eye-popping performance by Lady Gaga, a special award for Whitney Houston and that jaw-dropping number from Lambert, who traded in his "American Idol" image for sex, leather and chains Sunday.

On an elaborate set filled with stairs and platforms, Lambert fondled a female dancer, kissed an androgynous band mate and led two leather-clad men across the stage on leashes as he sang the title track from his new CD, "For Your Entertainment," out this week.

Lady Gaga, wearing a "Alien"-inspired headdress and vest filled with lights, performed songs from her new album, "The Fame Monster," also due in stores this week. She used her microphone to break into a glass case where a grand piano stood. It caught fire when she sat down to play.

Whitney Houston made a resplendent return to the AMA stage with an elegant performance of "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." The 46-year-old entertainer also received the International Award of Excellence for her musical and philanthropic contributions. She dedicated the honor to her daughter, music mogul Clive Davis and "everybody who supported me."

Jackson's trophies were accepted by his brother Jermaine, who paid tribute to his late brother by wearing glittery white glove. He thanked "Allah for blessing my entire family" and named each of his brothers and sisters.

He said the message of Michael, who died in June at age 50, is more important than any award.

"The message that Michael had will live on forever," he said. "He saw good in everyone and he wanted everyone to do good. He always started with love."

The American Music Awards honor the year's top-selling artists in eight popular genres, and fans voted for the winners online. But even more than awards, the AMAs are about performances, and more than a dozen of them filled Sunday's show.

The Black Eyed Peas, voted favorite pop/rock band, energized the crowd when they performed two of the year's most popular hits: "I Got A Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow."

Rihanna returned to the AMA stage, sporting blonde hair, a skintight, white peek-a-boo bodysuit and a tattoo down the front of her neck that read "Rated R," the name of her new album, out this week.

Janet Jackson opened the show with a medley of some of the biggest hits from her long career -- all tracks that appear on her new greatest-hits collection, also called "Number Ones."

Alicia Keys and Jay-Z dueted on their ode to New York City. Shakira was flanked by a dozen dancers in tiny black bodysuits as she sang her new single. Kelly Clarkson performed a stripped down version of her hit "Already Gone," backed by a string quartet.

Jennifer Lopez added a boxing motif to her dance-filled performance, but she slipped during a tricky move and landed on her bottom.

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong confessed backstage that the show left him star-struck.

"When you see all the talent that's in the room" like Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, he said, "it's like holy moly, these are huge people."

The band was voted favorite alternative artist. Other winners Sunday included Jay-Z, wife Beyonce, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.

Fuad: He can apply to practise in T&T
Jackson’s doc freed from jail
By Anna Ramdass (Express).

Caribbean-born doctor Conrad Murray, who was yesterday released from a Los Angeles jail after two years for involuntary manslaughter in the death of American pop star Michael Jackson, can return to Trinidad and appeal to the Medical Board  for a licence to practise.

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan, in a telephone interview with the Express yesterday, said Murray, 60, a cardiologist, can make a case legally as Section 40 of the Constitution guarantees citizens equal rights.

“He has already paid his dues, you cannot pay for something indefinitely. In that sense there is the possibility where he can make a case to the Medical Board and they will consider whether he can be registered,” said Khan.

Murray was hired by Jackson as his personal physician as he was preparing for his 2009 concert tour.

In June 2009, Jackson died of a prescription drug overdose where lethal levels of surgical anaesthetic propofol were found in his body.

On November 29, 2011, after a six-week trial, US Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor gave Murray the maximum four-year prison sentence, describing him as a “disgrace to the medical profession”.

However, in an exclusive interview with the Express yesterday, one of Murray’s patients and closest friends, Garreth Kalloo, said the doctor was treated unfairly and this country should welcome him with open arms.

Kalloo and his family flew to Los Angeles to lend support to Murray and be at his side upon his release from prison yesterday.

They were present with Murray’s family—his mother, wife and four-year- old son—when Murray walked out of the Los Angeles county jail just after midnight yesterday, a free man.

Murray was whisked away avoiding the glare of international media and unforgiving Jackson fans.

“We were the first persons to meet with him privately, he is a good man, he will be coming to Trinidad soon,” said Kalloo.

Kalloo is the godfather to Murray’s son. He said he met Murray some 20 years ago when the doctor visited his business—Kalloo’s Auto Rentals—looking for a car to rent.

Kalloo said he gave Murray his personal Mercedes Benz to use and over the years a friendship deepened as Murray returned home almost annually for Carnival.

Kalloo said Murray was a godsend as he owes his life to him. “He saved my life. Four years ago I had heart problems which required very complex surgery. Many doctors in the US did not want to perform the surgery,” said Kalloo.

“He looks good. He wants to come back to his country. I think the Minister of  Health should assist in ensuring he gets back his licence as he can save many lives at home,” said Kalloo.

“He’s like a member of my family and I stand by him. He is one of the best cardiologists and we need someone like him in Trinidad,” he added.

Kalloo claimed Murray was victimised and became a scapegoat of blame for Jackson’s death.

Kalloo and his family spent time with Murray and his family at a private undisclosed location in Los Angeles yesterday.

He said Murray told him he will be coming home this year.

He said Murray gave him some thoughts to share with the people of Trinidad and Tobago which he wrote: “I am a son of the soil, I send my warm affection to all, see you soon.”

Murray was born on Grenada, in February 1953, where his parents met. At the age of seven he moved to Trinidad where he lived with his mother and completed high school and worked as teacher, customs clerk and insurance underwriter before moving to the US to pursue his education and career in medicine.

Mom re-unites with son, Dr Conrad Murray
By CAROL MATROO Wednesday, October 30 2013

Just moments after her son Dr Conrad Murray was released from a Los Angeles jail yesterday morning, after serving nearly two years of a four-year sentence, his mother Milta Rush flew out of Trinidad to lend her support to the man who was found guilty of causing the death of pop icon Michael Jackson, because of a drug overdose in 2009.

He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. A childhood friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Rush left the country on Sunday to be at her son’s side.

The friend said the mother has distanced herself from people in the area, after they spoke with the Newsday about her son’s arrest when it happened. “I am happy that he is out, really glad for him, but other than that I have no other comment to make. His mother was not very happy when we spoke about him, and all we said was good,” the friend recalled.

After his release Murray was sighted just once by the media, having burgers at an In-N-Out burger joint. His attorney stated that he was spending time with his family, and asking for his privacy. Rush was said to be spending time with Murray, his girlfriend Nicole Alvarez, and their son at an undisclosed location. A jury concluded after a two-month trial that Murray’s negligence led to Jackson’s death from an overdose of the surgical anaesthetic propofol.

Murray, a cardiologist who grew up in El Socorro, Trinidad, but was born in Grenada, was hired to serve as the pop icon’s personal doctor for his comeback tour in 2009. He told investigators at the time he gave Jackson nightly infusions of propofol (also known as diprivan) to treat his intractable insomnia for two months, so he could rest for rehearsals.

Propofol is a short-acting, intravenously administered hypnotic/amnestic agent. Its use includes the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia, sedation for mechanically ventilated adults, and procedural sedation. Propofol is also commonly used in veterinary medicine. Prosecutors argued that his negligence included leaving Jackson unmonitored, and unattended while the powerful anaesthetic was being pumped into his vein through an IV drip.

Murray left the Los Angeles County jail under sheriff’s escort, avoiding reporters and Jackson fans waiting for his release early Monday. He was driven away in a sheriff’s car from the “safety and security” of the jail, a report stated.

The handful of Jackson fans gathered outside the jail accused the Los Angeles County sheriff of showing favouritism to Murray by slipping him out of the jail through a back exit, instead of the door where freed prisoners normally leave. Murray, who the sheriff’s spokesman described as an exemplary inmate, was kept away from the general inmate population during his two years in the jail. He was also allowed to have liberal use of a telephone inside his cell during his last year.

While Murray lost his medical licence in several states, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan said he could re-apply if he returned to Trinidad.

Murray was born on Grenada, in February 1953, where his parents met. At the age of seven he moved to Trinidad where he lived with his mother and completed high school and worked as teacher, customs clerk and insurance underwriter before moving to the US to pursue his education and career in medicine.
So why are we trying to claim this fellow while the Grenadians have enough sense to keep quiet to avoid any international embarrassment?!  :-[

By virtue of his mother being Trini, he is Trini. The man also spent his formative years in TT. He went to school and worked in the country. We have to take the good and bad.

Nope he is Grenadian by birth and not Trini and both his parents are Grenadians and his mother came to Trinidad for work and a better standard of living while he was still vey young and sent for him when he was 7 years old.

Synopsis

Conrad Murray was born on February 19, 1953, in St. Andrews, Grenada. He moved to the United States in 1980. In 1999, he opened a private practice. Michael Jackson hired him as a personal physician for Jackson's 2009 concert tour. In June 2009, Jackson died of a prescription drug overdose. Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson in November 2011, and was sentenced to four years in prison. He served about two years at a Los Angeles County jail before being released in October 2013.

Early Life and Medical Training

Conrad Robert Murray was born on February 19, 1953, in St. Andrews, Grenada. The man who would become embroiled in the controversy surrounding the death of the "King of Pop" in June 2009 did not come from money. With his mother Milta spending most of her time in Trinidad and Tobago in search of better paying work, Murray lived with his maternal grandparents, two Grenadian farmers. His fractured family life was compounded by the total absence of his father, Rawle Andrews, a Houston area physician who, up until his death in 2001, focused his career on offering medical services to the poor. Conrad didn't meet his dad until he was 25.

At the age of seven, Murray relocated to Trinidad and Tobago to live with his mother, where he became a citizen and finished high school. Like Milta, Murray was determined to make a better life for himself, demonstrating at an early age a propensity to work hard. After high school he volunteered as an elementary school teacher in Trinidad, an experience he followed with work as a customs clerk and an insurance underwriter in order to pay for his college education. Murray also wasn't afraid to take advantage of an opportunity. At the age of 19 he bought his first house, then later sold it for a decent profit to support his university tuition in the United States.

In 1980, two years after first visiting Houston and getting a chance to introduce himself to his father, Conrad Murray returned to Texas to enroll at Texas Southern University, where in just three years he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in pre-medicine and biological sciences. From there, Murray followed in his father's footsteps and attended the primarily African-American Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

Upon graduating Maharre, Murray enrolled for additional training at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and then completed his residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. Other training stints followed; he studied at the University of Arizona on a Cardiology Fellowship, and landed back in California, where he eventually worked as the associate director for the interventional cardiology fellowship-training program at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

Practicing Medicine in Las Vegas

In 1999, Dr. Murray left California for a second time and struck out on his own, opening up a private practice in Las Vegas. Locating his office just east of the strip, Murray—again taking a cue from his father—aimed to serve not just the city's wealthy, but its underserved as well.

In 2006, Murray expanded his scope and returned to the city where his father had made a name for himself to open the Acres Homes Heart and Vascular Institute.

"We have been so lucky to have Dr. Murray and that clinic in this community," Houston patient Ruby Mosley told People magazine. "There are many, many patients that thank God this man was here for them."

Those who've had financial dealings with the doctor, however, might feel otherwise. Unpaid debts, lawsuits, and tax liens have followed Dr. Murray's life. More than $400,000 in court judgments alone were issued against his Las Vegas practice, and in December 2008 Dr. Murray, who has an unknown number of children, was ordered to cough up $3,700 in unpaid child support.

Treating the 'King of Pop'

In fact, it was Dr. Murray's debt situation that set the stage for his working relationship with Michael Jackson. The two men had first met in 2006 when the singer, a frequent Vegas visitor, had contacted Dr. Murray about treating one of his children for an unknown medical situation. Reports indicate that the two men soon became friends and, as Jackson began making plans for his upcoming 2009 concert tour, he hired Dr. Murray to be his personal physician for an astounding $150,000 a month.

Jackson's motivation to bring Murray aboard, though, may have had less to do with friendship and more to do with the singer's own complicated reliance on prescription medicine. Following Jackson's death, police discovered more than 20 prescriptions inside his rented Holmby Hills home, including methadone, fentanyl, percocet, dilaudid, and vicodin.

By all accounts, Jackson had become an insomniac and had pushed for the use of propofol, an anesthetic, to help him rest. Along with a mix of other drugs Jackson used to go to bed, he often referred to the concoction as his "milk" or "liquid sleep." But it was propofol he seems to have had a particular fondness for. Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse and nutritionist whom Jackson employed, told ABC News that the singer begged her to buy more of the drug for him. She refused.

"The problem with you telling me you want to be knocked out," Lee said she told him, is "you might not wake up the next morning. You don't want that."

Michael Jackson's Death

Dr. Murray, however, was another matter. While court documents showed he never actually purchased the drug for Jackson, over the course of the six weeks he worked for him, the doctor administered a nightly intravenous drip of propofol—despite his concerns that Jackson may be addicted to the drug.

That was the case on June 25, 2009, when Jackson, exhausted from a long rehearsal session at the Staples Center in Los Angeles that went past midnight, returned home and tried to get some rest. A familiar routine followed, with Murray hooking up his client to an IV in order to administer the propofol. Dr. Murray also gave Jackson lorazepam, an anti-anxiety medicine, and midazolam, a muscle relaxant.

According to records, the doctor then left Jackson's side for a few minutes to go to the bathroom.

When he returned he found the singer with a weak pulse and had stopped breathing. Reportedly, Murray immediately started applying CPR to revive the singer. In addition, in what has garnered plenty of controversy, Dr. Murray also administered another drug, flumazenil, to try to offset the sedatives already circulating in Jackson's body. Some experts have said Murray's use of this additional medicine may have actually exacerbated the problems propofol had caused.

While questions remain about Dr. Murray's work to try and save Jackson's life in those first harried moments, what is clear is that 82 minutes passed before the doctor or anyone else at Jackson's home called paramedics to the house. When emergency officials did finally arrive, Dr. Murray at first failed to tell them about the drugs he injected into the singer. Jackson was officially pronounced dead at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he had arrived via ambulance with Dr. Murray at his side.

Investigation & Indictment

In the months that followed the pop star's death, Conrad Murray's working relationship with the singer became not only the target of irate and shocked Jackson fans, but police investigators as well. In mid-August 2009, more than two dozen DEA agents, LA police detectives and Houston officers raided the doctor's Houston medical office to take a forensic image of Murray's computer and collect a myriad of medical documents.

Around that same time, news reports indicated that Dr. Murray was soon going to be charged with manslaughter, something that was heightened on August 24, 2009, when preliminary findings by the chief coroner for Los Angeles county revealed that Jackson had died as the result of lethal levels of propofol.

For his part, Dr. Murray said little about his work with Michael Jackson and the circumstances surrounding the singer's death, confining his remarks to a teary-eyed video he posted on YouTube. "I have done all I can do [to help the police]," Dr Murray tells the camera. "I told the truth, and I have faith the truth will prevail." Unfortunately for the doctor, after a six-week trial and a two-day deliberation process, a Los Angeles jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter on November 7, 2011.

On November 29, 2011, Murray was given the maximum sentence of four years in prison. In the sentencing, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor called Murray "a disgrace to the medical profession" and said he showed a "continual pattern of deceit."

Murray served out about two years of his sentence at a Los Angeles County jail. He was released in October 2013 and continues to appeal his conviction in the case.

The story behind the photo
By Mark Lyndersay (Guardian).

When I took this photograph in a small meeting room at the Trinidad Hilton, I’d been taking photographs for just a couple of years, mostly snapshots to accompany my first stories for the press. I’d managed to get into it through my cousin Alfred Aguiton, whose PR firm AMPLE was handling the press relations for the Jacksons visit to T&T.

Michael Jackson had already had one entire career by then, and was on the verge of launching another, steering clear of his brothers and Epic Records to chart his own path as a solo artist.

Janelle “Penny” Commissiong, freshly crowned Miss Universe, was staying at the hotel and was invited down to meet the performers.

So for around a half an hour, the most beautiful woman in the universe, the King of Pop and I were all in the same room and I was the only one with a camera.

The resulting photographs changed my life, and I became known as a photographer after that. I wrote a story about the Jacksons’ visit for Owen Baptiste’s People Magazine, learned some hard lessons about negotiating for the value of my photographs from the Epic Records PR team and for the first time, my photographs were published internationally.

I still have the negatives from that shoot, along with all the positives.
