The Disney-owned network is building up its live soccer content in Britain after already securing rights to show some Premier League matches.

The first live MLS match will be on Aug. 8 when England midfielder David Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy plays New England.

ESPN also announced Tuesday it has won the rights to show German, Portuguese, Russian and Dutch league soccer. ESPN has been picking up rights previously held by Setanta after the network collapsed in Britain due to financial problems.

Next season, ESPN will show 46 live top-flight English matches in Britain and 30 Scottish fixtures.

I think a highlight show currently airs at about 4 or 5 am on one of d smaller networks. MLS is a non-entity here

I disagree, the press still interested in what he doing in the US but the fans simply not into the MLS, regardless of the fact that Beckham there. Channel 5 hold /held the MLS rights and tried to make it mainstream viewing with a weekly highlight show at about 6pm  during his first season with a full game weekly at a reasonable time on Five US. They took most of the SoccerAM crew to front it but it never caught on. It dosen't look like they have any plans to bring it back this season and they doh show games on Five US either anymore. The show was less laughs than Soccer Am but still persisted to take the pi*s out of the MLS at every oppertunity. The man still respected here but does take up more space in the teen and gossip mags than sports pages.  Highlights does get the occasional glance buh that is about it.

Beckham come like the Royals....foreigners more interested in what he doing than the British public.

:rotfl: Its true.

These matches (if shown live) will be on in the middle of the night over there, I highly doubt they'll waste their money showing it during prime time.

they secure the rights - doesn't mean they going to do it.
Don't think MLS tv rights would cost an insane amount - would be interesting to get that figure, and see how much the clubs get out of it.

Might be more viable to have a highlights package and sell advertising around it.
