Arnor Gudjohnsen and his son Eidur of Iceland.

Arnór Gudjohnsen, father of Bolton, Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen. Arnór and Eidur are often referred to as the only father and son to play for their country during the same game, but they never actually played together.

Arnór played 73 games for the Icelandic national team and scored 14 goals. When he was 25, he was asked what his biggest wish was, to which he replied, ‘to play international football alongside Eidur’.

His dream almost came true when Eidur came on as a second half substitute against Estonia on the 24th April 1996. Eidur replaced his father in a game Iceland won 3-0. Arnor was 34 and Eidur just 17.

However, shortly before a match in Reykjavik during which father and son were scheduled to appear alongside one another, Eidur broke his ankle in an Under 18 tournament.

By the time he returned, Arnór had retired. “It remains my biggest regret that we didn't get to play together, and I know it's Eidur's, too," said Arnór.
