Atletico 2 Fulham 1

Forlan scored the winner in the 116th...cruel deflection off Hangeland

Great effort by Fulham this year...Atletico is a team full of talent and have been in the Champion's League with this squad the last 2 seasons...very commendable of Fulham's effort against a team with better players

I really wanted them to win it but their run was amazing win or lose the final in my eyes

You made the EPL proud Fulham...wins vs Juve Roma Woflsburg Hamburg and Shaktar and very very cruel defeat vs A.Madrid... :beermug: :beermug:

Fulham deserve more from this game. They were willing to attack and had a good approach. AtM looked very nervous, but did play well in spurts. Overall an entertaining game.

giggsy11 give the youth some time. He is only 21 still learning the game and yet still has a decent strike rate in proportion to Torres at AtM. Not long ago at the same age people were saying the same thing about Rooney, Ronaldo, Torres, Van Persie etc.

I hear yuh. Look forward to keep watching him. Hope he does not go to Chelski for selfish reasons. Also when was the last time any young player fulfilled their potential at Chelski?

Hard luck for Fulham..nice run. I just saw a graphic on ESPN that Dempsey coming on in the 55th minute meant that he became the first American to play in a European final. Puts alot of things in perspective that our Dwight Yorke has accomplished for himself while representing T&T! :beermug:

He carrying that Achilles injury since the preseason... picked up a knee injury and a dislocated shoulder along the way.  The preseason injury is what kept him out of the El Sal game in September... so do the math.
Title: Tough Europa draw for English duo
Post by: GregoryRojas on August 27, 2010, 07:12:44 PM
Manchester City face a tough test in the Europa League group stage after they were drawn with Juventus.

As well as the Italian giants, Roberto Mancini's team also face Salzburg of Austria and Lech Poznan of Poland.

Liverpool had an unkind draw too, the Reds put into Group K along with Romania's Steaua Bucharest, Italy's Napoli and Utrecht of the Netherlands.

The draw saw the 48 clubs divided into 12 groups of four teams, with the top two from each set progressing.

Manchester City summer signing Mario Balotelli was the victim of racist abuse from Juventus supporters during his time as an Inter Milan player.

Two seasons ago Juve were ordered to play a home game behind closed doors after an incident aimed at Balotelli, who is of Ghanaian descent.

And during the last campaign the Serie A club banned several supporters after they chanted discriminatory remarks about Balotelli during a cup match against Napoli.

"I think a new season is a chance to show new behaviour, and to show also at a European level that the Italian supporters, or more particularly those of Juve, have understood the messages and the sanctions that were handed out," said Juventus general manager Jean-Claude Blanc.

"Supporting your team is to support your team, and not to make remarks of a racist nature toward other players. We will be extremely demanding and intransigent about this."

Brian Marwood, Manchester City's head of football administration, said: "Mario, like all of our players, I'm sure, will be relishing the opportunity.

"He's a young man with an incredibly bright future ahead of him and we will give him every support and help that he needs.

"We will leave it to the authorities to deal with anything that happens but we are not anticipating any issue."

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard admitted that the Europa League is not his club's top priority - but is confident the Reds will progress from the group stage.

"It's a strong group and I'm certainly looking forward to the games," said Gerrard.

"I'm confident we can get out of the group but it will be tough. I don't think the Europa League is the priority. Everybody knows that our league position, where we finish at the end of this year, is the priority.

"But it's another trophy, it's a big cup. We haven't won a trophy for four years now so it's important we put a good show on in all the cup competitions and try to reward the fans with a final."

Group J also looks extremely competitive, with Sevilla, Paris Saint Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Karpaty Lviv all competing for the top two places.

The group stage begins on 16 September and when it concludes three months later the top two teams from each group will go through to the final 32 - where they will be joined by the eight third-placed finishers in the Champions League group stage

Stoke City handed tough Europa League tie in Croatia.
BBC SPORTS.

Stoke qualified for Europe despite losing in the FA Cup final Stoke City have been paired with Croatian side Hajduk Split in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Fulham will play Slovenia's Domzale or Croatia's RNK Split if they can hold their second round, first leg lead against Northern Ireland's Crusaders.

Hearts were drawn against Tromso of Norway or Hungarian side Paksi.

Dundee United, who trail Slask Wroclaw 1-0 after Thursday's first leg, will face Metalurg Skopje of Macedonia or Lokomotiv Sofia from Bulgaria.

Stoke last played in Europe in the 1974/75 season, when they lost to Dutch giants Ajax in the UEFA Cup.

Manager Tony Pulis was delighted with the draw, telling the club's official website: "It's an occasion that every single one of us are looking forward to.

"Hajduk Split are a hugely renowned football club with great tradition in European competitions.

"It's also a lovely city for our supporters to go out and visit."

The first leg will be at the Britannia Stadium on Thursday, 28 July. The return match will be at the 35,000 capacity Stadion Poljud a week later.

Welsh Premier League side Llanelli, who beat former European Cup Winners' Cup champions Dinamo Tbilisi 2-1 in Thursday's first leg, have been drawn against either KR Reykjavik of Iceland or Slovakian team Zilina.

Llanelli manager Andy Legg said his side's display against the Georgians was the best ever by a Welsh team in European competition.

Fellow Welsh side The New Saints face a tough task to reach the third round of qualifying. They lost their first leg 3-1 at home to Danish side Midtjylland. If they do progress, they will face Portugal's Vitoria.

Northern Ireland's Glentoran lost the first leg of their second round qualifier to Vorskla Poltava of Ukraine 2-0. Their reward for reaching the third round would be a tie against Ireland's Sligo Rovers.

Sligo are managed by the former Wolves and Coventry midfielder Paul Cook.

Europa League third qualifying round draw (UK teams only):

Stoke City v Hajduk Split

Domzale/RNK Split v Crusaders/Fulham

Paksi/Tromso v Hearts

Metalurg Skopje/Lokomotiv Sofia v Slask Wroclaw/Dundee United

KR Reykjavik/Zilina v Llanelli/Dinamo Tbilisi

The New Saints/Midtjylland v Vitoria SC

Glentoran/Vorskla Poltava v Sligo Rovers

Ties to be played on 28 July and 4 August.

Stoke seal Hajduk win
www.skysports.com (http://www.skysports.com)

Stoke City made their return to European competition on Thursday and claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Croatian outfit Hajduk Split.

Although a win, the result does mean that Stoke still have a lot of work to do in their Europa League third round qualifying clash ahead of the second leg next week.

The Potters, who had not played European football since 1974, began in superb fashion with Jon Walters heading home just three minutes in at The Britannia Stadium.

But that was a good as it got for Tony Pulis's men as they could not find a second goal despite dominating for much of the match thereafter.

Despite being relative novices in Europe compared to their opponents, it took no time for Stoke to find their rhythm against Hajduk and they were soon in front.

Matthew Etherington collected Rory Delap's pass on the left flank and delivered a delightful cross on to the head of Walters, who calmly dispatched the ball into the corner of the net.

Moments later the Potters thought they had made it 2-0, but Kenwyne Jones' low effort was ruled offside.

Walters knocked the ball down for Jones just after the quarter-hour mark, although the Trinidad and Tobago international could not keep his shot under control.

Ante Vukusic then tried his luck for the visitors, only to lash his strike wide.

Hajduk enjoyed a brief spell of pressure and the ball almost fell for Vukusic in front of goal before squirming through to Asmir Begovic.

But Stoke were soon back on the offensive, with Robert Huth and Jones both seeing shots blocked by some last-ditch defending.

Jones rose on the edge of the six-yard box to meet Jermaine Pennant's free kick but Hadjuk goalkeeper Danijel Subasic got down to save the striker's header.

Subasic was then called into action again to collect Etherington's drive.

Struggle
The away side appeared to be struggling with balls into the box and were forced to make a goal-line clearance six minutes before the break when Ryan Shawcross flicked on Delap's long throw.

The pattern of the game showed little sign of changing as the second half got under way, with Etherington sending in a dangerous cross which just evaded Walters and a corner that Huth failed to guide on target when he might have done better.

Shawcross then got his head on another Delap throw into the area which Hajduk managed to scramble behind.

Marin Tomasov unleashed an effort from outside the box for the visitors but Begovic dealt with it comfortably.

Stoke's intensity appeared to have dropped a little with 15 minutes to go and Pulis brought on Dean Whitehead for Pennant.

Soon after, Subasic dived to push an Etherington cross away from the in rushing Walters, before Whitehead saw a drilled effort blocked.

Etherington was then replaced by Ryan Shotton and the weary-looking hosts were unable to create much more in attack until Huth scooped an effort wide right at the death.

Title: Kenwyne's late equaliser puts Stoke in Europa knockout stage
Post by: Tallman on December 01, 2011, 07:24:57 PM
Potters through to knockout stages
stokecityfc.com

KENWYNE JONES powered home a trademark close range header to book Stoke City's passage through to the Knockout Stages of the Europa League . . . as they secured the precious point in their Group E encounter with Dynamo Kiev.

Jones netted his fourth goal in Europe and his sixth of the season in total from a Jermaine Pennant cross to cancel out an unfortunate own goal from Matthew Upson in the first half as the Potters hit back to claim a share of the spoils with the Ukrainians.

The draw was enough to take City through and it was so nearly a night of double celebration as Besiktas snatched a late winner in Israel to leave the issue of who finishes top of Group E in the balance going into Matchday Six in two weeks time.

Kiev, who needed a good result to keep their hopes of qualification alive, looked the better side in the first half to frustrate the Potters and they went in front in the 28th minute when the outstretched Upson turned the ball into his own net.

But City pressed on in the second half and had a number of good chances - Pennant having a shot cleared off the line - before Jones rose to head home the all-important goal.

The draw means that Kiev now look likely to go out of the competition and their hopes of progress now rest on the Potters managing to win in Istanbul.

Pulis made eight changes to the side that had got back to winning ways at the weekend with Huth, Pennant and Delap the only survivors from the Blackburn match.

City made an encouraging start as they forced a throw-in on the left hand side which Delap launched in the box, but Upson's flick landed safely with Shovkovskiy.

Although the Potters sustained the early pressure, it was Kiev who threatened on the counter attack as Alyev gave Begovic an uneasy moment with a long range shot before the giant Bosnian grasped the ball at the second attempt moving low to his right.

After Palacios had shown some neat touches, a rather ambitious attempt at a pass let Alyev in again and he tried his luck from long range with the ball flashing past the post.

Shotton was detailed to take the long throw-ins from the right with Delap operating down the left hand side and when he launched one into the box, Huth rose above his marker to get his head to it but his flick was fractionally too high.

Kiev continued to look menacing on the counter attack and Gusev was given too much freedom down the left from which he delivered a cross that evaded everyone, much to the relief of the City defenders who were backtracking.

The Ukrainians were growing in confidence and their increasing amount of possession was rewarded with an opening goal in the 28th minute.

Shevchenko and Yaramlenko linked up well as Kiev turned defence into attack swiftly and when Alyev tried his luck it deflected off the outstretched boot of Upson and squeezed past the desperate dive of Begovic to try and keep it out.

The Potters desperately tried to lift their game after that unfortunate setback but both they and the crowd were frustrated by Kiev's ability to keep the ball.

Things could have got worse when Shotton was caught in possession going forward and Gusev launched a counter attack from which Shevchenko was given acres of space on the left hand side of the box but his shot clipped the upright.

City were looking for a more positive start to the second half and they got it with two excellent opportunities to draw level immediately after the break.

Delap's astute pass found Palacios breaking into the box and although his first touch was not a good one, he still got in a shot which was well saved by Shovkovskiy.

Moments later, a long throw from Delap was only half cleared and Pennant latched onto it to fire a low shot goalbound only for Khacheridi to block on the line.

Those chances had lifted the crowd after the subdued atmosphere at the end of the first half, but the final ball let City down on occasions as they pressed forward.

City made their first change of the night when Fuller replaced Diao, meaning that Delap reverted to a central midfield role with Walters down the left.

Fuller had an immediate chance to burst into the box on one of his familiar runs, but he eventually ran into a wall of Kiev defenders and was crowded out.

City launched another attack down the right hand side as Shotton on the overlap pulled the ball back to Pennant whose cross was headed goalbound by Jones, but it didn't have sufficient power to trouble Shovkovskiy who saved moving to his right.

But nine minutes from time, it was a different story as Jones ficked the ball onto Pennant and then burst into the six yard box to power home a close range header.

City kept pushing forward and had a number of half chances, but deep into injury-time it took a brilliant save from Begovic to hold onto the point, diving to his left to keep a blistering shot from Yarmalenko which appeared to be creeping inside the post.

Liverpool handed tricky draw
August 31, 2012
Press Association

Tottenham and Liverpool were both handed Italian jobs after being paired with Lazio and Udinese in the Europa League group stage draw.

Spurs -- denied a Champions League spot despite finishing fourth in the Barclays Premier League after Chelsea's European Cup triumph -- were placed in Group J, which also contained Greek club Panathinaikos and Maribor of Slovenia.

Three-time winners Liverpool will also face mega-rich Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala and Swiss side Young Boys in Group A. Newcastle was in Group D along with Bordeaux, Club Brugge and Maritimo.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who watched his side edge past Hearts in the play-off round, said: "The groups have been drawn and we have got a difficult group. It is another step forward for us. European football is brilliant for this club and we look forward to going further in the competition."

Liverpool and Tottenham were both top seeds but were arguably handed tougher groups than Newcastle, which was seeded third ahead of its first European campaign for six years.

Manager Alan Pardew watched the draw live on television with several of his players and told his club's official website, nufc.co.uk: "My gut reaction is that the travelling is good, so I'm pleased about that -- I didn't really want to go to the Ukraine or Russia or anywhere. The teams are of the standard you would expect in Europe so it's a tough-ish group, not the toughest by any means, but not the weakest so it's a test for us."

Meanwhile, Paul Gascoigne has been promised an invitation to Spurs' match at Lazio to celebrate the link he created between the two clubs.

Lazio general manager Maurizio Manzini revealed the former England star, 45, would be approached to attend the game at the Stadio Olimpico. Gascoigne joined Lazio from Spurs in 1992 and almost immediately secured a place in their folklore -- his first goal for the club was a last-gasp equalizer in the Rome derby.

Benfica and 'the curse of Bela Guttmann'

"After the second European Cup victory, Guttman approached the recently-elected president Antonio Carlos Cabral Fezas Vital with what seemed an eminently reasonable request -- a pay rise.

"Vital chose to turn Guttman down, whereupon the Hungarian departed with what has become a well-worn parting shot: a simple declaration that Benfica would not win another European Cup.

"Guttman's curse has proved painfully prophetic -- the Aguias have lost five European Cup finals since, in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1988, 1990."

Football is really a cruel lover. Benfica was all over Chelsea especially in the first half, but they played with their food and paid the price. Somehow I had a feeling this would happen, having followed Benfica for a few years well.
They always seem to buckle at crucial moments.

Spurs face Anzhi in Europa League
By ESPN staff

Tottenham have been drawn against Anzhi Makhachkala and Swansea City will face Valencia in the Europa League group stage.

Spurs -- who reached last season's quarter-final stage where they lost out to Basel -- will also face Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova and Tromso of Norway in Group K.

The big-spending London side are preparing for life without star player Gareth Bale -- who is expected to join Real Madrid for a world-record transfer fee before the end of the summer transfer window -- but will still be seen as one of the favourites to lift the trophy won by Chelsea last season after entering the draw as one of the top seeds.

Valencia and Swansea are joined in Group A by Russia’s Kuban Krasnodar and St Gallen of Switzerland.

The trip to Valencia will see Swansea's Spain international midfielder Pablo Hernandez return to his former club. Manager Michael Laudrup -- who led the Swans into Europe via their Capital One Cup triumph last term -- and several of his other players will also familiar to Spanish football fans.

Group D contains FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic -- since relegated to the Championship -- along with Rubin Kazan, Maribor and Zulte Waregem.

In Group H, Sevilla -- who enjoyed back-to-back triumphs in the Europa League's forerunner, the UEFA Cup, in 2006 and 2007 -- take on Bundesliga side Freiburg plus Estoril and Liberec of Portugal and the Czech Republic respectively.

French side Lyon, beaten by Real Sociedad in the Champions League play-off, take on another Spanish side, Real Betis, in Group I, along with Portugal's Vitoria de Guimaraes and Croatia's Rijeka.

I notice Spurs wearing a jersey with AIA sponsors rather than HP so I looked it up.
Interesting story - different shirt sponsors for different competitions.

Also, Valencia is a weaker side this season having sold Soldado to Spurs amongst other departures. The replacements for this year come from mostly the lower leagues and the bench of other Euro sides.

Yes it's a good performance by Swansea but you epl fanboys so out of breath that neither of you managed to mention that Valencia were down to 10 for most of the game (80 minutes).
As for last season's 5th place finish, Valencia is currently in horrible form in La Liga, 16th in the table,( hardly last season's 5th place form) so now is the time to hit them.

Genk drew today 0-0 away from home with Anzi Mackhalakalaklalakakaka.

Hyland played the full game.

Genk and Anzhi play out dour draw
ESPN Soccernet

IIya Maksimov's red card brought some last-gasp drama to an otherwise uninspiring Europa league goalless draw between Anzhi Makhachkala and Genk.

The meeting of Russia's 16th-placed side and Belgium's sixth never seemed likely to produce a contest teeming with quality and the last-32 first leg clash lived down to those modest expectations with few clearcut scoring chances.

Anzhi had the better of proceedings without finding a way past Laszlo Koteles in the away goal, but ended the match with 10 men after Maksimov's dismissal in the 89th minute.

Genk managed the first attempt of the night when Julian Gorius tried his luck from 30 yards, but his effort did not worry Mihail Kerzhakov.

Fedor Smolov returned fire for Anzhi moments later, but his shot carried even less venom than the one that preceded it.

Anzhi began to set the tempo as the match continued, Rasim Tagirbekov striking wide from a corner on the quarter-hour and Alexander Bukharov heading just off target having met Oleksandr Aliyev's testing free-kick.

A blank half-time scoreline was almost averted when Jelle Vossen went clear for Genk, but Kerzhakov was on hand to save his side.

The second period followed a familiar pattern, with Bukharov and Aliyev pushing the home side forward only to be denied by a combination of Koteles and some uninspired finishing.

As in the first half, the visitors almost scored against the run of play late on - Fabien Camus' 25-yard drive kept out by Kerzhakov.

Maksimov's professional foul on Kalidou Koulibaly gave Genk three minutes of added time to make their extra man count but it was not enough.

Pogba had a solid game today. Sublime touches here and there accompanied by physicality when necessary.

Pirlo could spring a pass in his sleep. He must literally have premonitions of a divine pass to unlock a devilish defence. Today though ... aside from a lil action from the fans ... the Turks were angels. Relatively easy pickings for Juve.

Juve 2 Trabzonspor 0.

It was good to ketch Zokora, Bosingwa .. buh I eh make out Malouda. (Only caught the second half, what's de scene with Florent?).

I've never seen so many misses and wrong plays in such a wide open final.

Yet

3 teams in the last 8 of CL
3 teams in the last 8 of Europa

Scudetto by contrast have zero

Russian League has 1 in Europa

Czech League has 1 in Europa

Ligue Un has 1 in CL

EPL/BPL has 2. 1 in each competition

Portugal has 2 in Europa and 1 in CL

Bundesliga has 2 in CL and 1 in Europa

Man United could earn more from Europa League than UCL - source

Manchester United will receive almost £40 million in Europa League prize money if they progress to the final in Stockholm on May 24 -- a figure which would eclipse their earnings from last season's unsuccessful Champions League campaign.

United go into Thursday's semifinal decider against Celta Vigo at Old Trafford with a 1-0 advantage from last week's first-leg in Spain courtesy of Marcus Rashford's second-half winner.

And progression to the final by Jose Mourinho's team would help the club soften the financial blow of missing out on participating in the Champions League this season, sources have told ESPN FC.

United, who will reveal their third quarter financial results on May 16, received £34.4m from the Champions League pot following their group-stage elimination under Louis van Gaal last season, plus a further £3.4m after reaching the round of 16 of the Europa League.

But with a place in the final against either Ajax or Lyon now in sight, United stand to top up this season's earnings by €6.5m (£.5.5m) by winning the competition or €3.5m (£2.95m) if they end up as losing finalists.

Liverpool received £34.2m in Europa League prize money last season as a result of their progression to the final, where they lost to Sevilla in Basel, and United have already earned a similar amount by reaching the semifinals.

The money United stand to receive will diminish the impact of failing to play in this season's Champions League, but the earnings on offer in that competition continue to dwarf those in the Europa League.

Leicester City are expected to receive £66m in prize money following their run to the quarterfinals, while Manchester City banked £75.8m last season after making it to the semifinals for the first time in the club's history.

Three players from Trinidad and Tobago saw playing time in European League action on Thursday as qualifying action continued for both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League competitions.

Senior team defender Sheldon Bateau made his european debut for Kazakhstan club FC Kairat, playing the full encounter in his team’s 1-1  draw with Albania’s KF Skenderbeu Korce in Almaty in their Europa second round qualifier.

Radanfah Abu Bakr also appeared in the full game for FK Suduva Marijampole of Lithuania in their 2-0 win over FK Liepaja in another Europa League qualifier. And former national under 20 player Keston Julien saw full action in AS Trencin’s 1-1 draw with Israel’s Beni Aviv FC. Lester Peltier was on the bench for FC Alashkert of Armenia in their  1-1 draw with FC Bate Boris in UEFA European Champions’ League second round qualifying clash.

Bateau who played in both of T&T’s recent previous World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and United States, spoke about his Europa League debut appearance.

“It was a good experience for me. It was a game of a high level similar to international matches. The experience I have had with the national team has helped me to perform better and to keep a cool head because before the game it was a bit nerve wrecking because I’ve always dreamt about playing at this European level and there was a bit of tenseness surrounding the match. The atmosphere at the stadium and everything was strong,” Bateau told TTFA Media.

“The game itself was pretty good. We were solid defensively and I felt I was solid also in my second game for the club. The fans and the president of the club were happy with the performance. We are at 1-1 and we need to go to Albania and get a result in order to move on and we will go there and give it everything.”

The former Belgium and Russian-based player added that he was in a good state of mind having settled at the club.

“I’m happy because I am in a good club now with a good environment and facilities as well as within a  circle of players with a level of class and experience, players like Arshavin and the captain of the Kazakhstan national team (Bauyrzhan Islamkhan),” Bateau said.

“The set up has everything to keep you improving once you are prepared to dedicate yourself. So I am staying focused, staying humble and just putting in the work to keep improving my levels,” he added.

Meantime, T&T head coach Dennis Lawrence will continue his preparation of a 25-man squad from Monday in preparation for the July 26th international friendly away to Ecuador. Lawrence will be looking at a few new players and recalls to the set up as he looks ahead to September 1st when T&T faces Honduras in their World Cup qualifying encounter at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

“We’ve invited twenty five players to be part of the training squad and we’ll work with them from this coming Monday before finalising the team to travel to Ecuador. We’ll get in a few days of preparation at home for the match,” Lawrence said.

“We have available to us some of the players who were involved for the two previous games against the US and Costa Rica and we’ve invited a few others to have a look at and see how they respond to what we are requiring of them,” Lawrence added.
