T&T’s men’s basketball squad and coaching staff left for Central America yesterday to participate in the Guanajuato Invitational Tournament from tomorrow to June 30 in Mexico. Head coach, American Terry Layton, will be hoping to get the squad, which includes four locally-based players in guard Steven “Lighter” Lewis ( Defence Force), centre Miguel Williams (Petro Jazz) and forwards Kenyatta Alfred and Kurt Christian (Shak Attack), to gel as preparation for the 2010 Centrobasket Championships set for July 5-11 in the Dominican Republic. Layton is confident that this tournament will help with the team’s preparation. “When you are going to compete in big tournaments such as the Centrobasket, there is need for your team to play in pre-tournaments like this. This will help to build the team and we will be getting valuable practice leading up to the big tournament,” said Layton.

The former University of T&T (UTT) head coach said the level of competition is expected to be very high, which will be a plus for the team. “There will be a number of national teams including Cuba, El Salvador and the host, while a team is expected from Brazil and two All Star teams from the US.” Last year, T&T placed fourth at the Caribbean Basketball Championships (CBC) in the British Virgin Islands under Layton, after only having under three weeks to prepare. The squad started training on Tuesday at the Mayaro Indoor Facility, despite the fact that the NBFT&T president Brian Manning knew of T&T’s participation since January 30. It is still not clear if the squad will return to T&T or head straight to the Centrobasket tournament.

So what's the sense in just naming the local players and not the entire squad? who are the other players?
