Title: WC 2010 - Match 50 - Round of 16 : USA vs Ghana
Post by: Bitter on June 26, 2010, 05:21:41 AM
Fireworks expected in Rustenburg (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061503/preview.html)

No quarter will be asked or given when USA take on Ghana's Black Stars at Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng Stadium for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. With both teams having already offered evidence of an attacking approach, an open, attractive game looks on the cards on Saturday.

The match
USA-Ghana, Round of 16, Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg, 26 June, 20.30

The Round of 16 meeting between USA and Ghana promises a feast of attacking football given both teams have looked stronger going forward than at the back. While USA teetered on the brink of elimination before scoring a stoppage-time winner in their final Group C game against Algeria, Ghana performed impressively in navigating their way through a tricky section where they faced Serbia, Australia and Germany. Though that may not necessarily ensure the west Africans the psychological upper hand in the face of single-minded opponents, several players who will be involved on Saturday have first-hand memories of the sides' meeting at the group stage in Germany four years ago - when Ghana's 2-1 victory sent the Americans home.

This time USA coach Bob Bradley will be relying on Landon Donovan, the gifted LA Galaxy forward whose two goals so far in South Africa included the decisive late winner against Algeria. Bradley's opposite number Milovan Rajevac, meanwhile, can call on Rennes front man Asamoah Gyan, who has scored six of Ghana's nine goals so far in 2010. To keep Gyan and Co at bay, the United States will need to tighten up a defence that at times has been found wanting, particularly in the first half of their 2-2 draw with Slovenia.

Players to watch
Clint Dempsey v John Pantsil

As team-mates at Fulham in the English Premiership since 2008, there can be little that these two do not know about each other. So, when Dempsey makes his characteristic runs from deep positions, he is sure to encounter the immovable force of Pantsil in the Ghana defence. And while the American perhaps has something to prove after missing a hatful of chances against Algeria, he will not expect any favours from an opponent who shrugged off a nasty clash of heads during the 1-1 draw with Australia to take his place against Germany four days later.

The stat
12 – the number of survivors from the group match between the two teams at Germany 2006: Ghana's Richard Kingson, John Mensah, Derek Boateng, Stephen Appiah, Pantsil and Matthew Amoah, and USA's Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Donovan and Oguchi Onyewu.

What they said
"The USA are a very good side, solid, full of running and they play well as a team. Still, we know we have the quality to beat them," Asamoah Gyan, Ghana forward.

"We'd be delighted with two more wins but why stop there? Nothing is impossible. Winning the World Cup is what we're here for," Jozy Altidore, USA forward.

The voice of the fans
"I will a bit sorry to lose one of these teams, as I would like to have seen them reach the quarter-finals. But if I have to choose, I reckon Ghana will go through," masry2zbone, FIFA.com user

The question
Can the Americans repeat their feats from last year's FIFA Confederations Cup and reach the Final? Or can Ghana push on and become the first African team ever reach the last four?

I have no idea what the f**k you going on about... but then again, that's no real surprise.  Sport and picong is one thing, showing somebody being murdered and their scalp being cut off is tasteless, posting it in the context which it was (throwing picong) was unnecessary.  Whoever feel to disagree that is their right, I not posting for support or agreement.

Oho-so when you have disagreed with another's point of view on this forum and decide to throw in/respond with contrived scenarios "involving that person getting bend over as a boy by an adult male" (child sex abuse), as a means to question their masculinity, that is picong not tasteless or unnecessary. Gotcha!

Ghana is a good young team with very good build up that lack the final third of the field. Uncle Sam army can run a full 90' plus mins however, they take a little longer than usual to settle down, the first 20 mins is major for them

This one hard to pick at first I was a seeing a draw with penalties but Ghana will dominate in midfield but US will hit them on the break. I just feel that the States need to dominate to score and they won't get a chance.

Hmmmmm...USA can't seem to touch the ball much. Everything going right for Ghana. Pure possession, they playing their game.

This is why I don't like Argentinian and to a lesser extent Spain's brand of possession. It's just based on speed and quickness. All yuh hadda do to defend dem sides so is up yuh energy. How yuh defend Ghana? Yuh right there and dey eh hustling but yuh cyar touch the ball, is just individual dribbling, and whole game yuh ketch yuhself ball watching. That's the ball I like.

Now if only they could score and defend properly.

usa showing some signs of recovery near the end of the half, Ghana need to keep dat in check.  The other day I said that Ghana is a talented team and a man tell meh he eh see no setta talent I talkin' bout.  The usa seein it right now.  Ghana's main attacking player so far in the tournament has been Gyan and he hasn't got his wheels spinning in this game yet.  Long as Ghana can keep up the possession and intricate play, usa cyah see dey way.  harkes say the usa have to get past Ghana's physicality and "outsmart" them.  First off, Ghana is not playing a physical game (hard to be physical with someone when you hoggin' the possession) and I eh know, but maybe the only person I see they outsmart so far is the ref wit donovan and he skip-over-the-tackle-and-trow heself-down dive to get a free kick.

The USA get the tactics wrong big time. They have yet to figure out and deal with Ghana Tactical organization. They are trying to match 3-4-3 system of play. However they are playing their system straight forward, where as Ghana has mad e an adaptation to the 3-4-3 that USA is struggling with.

They should address this at the half. If they do it will give them more space to build in the central areas of the field.

Aother problem they having is finding the CF, Ghana is doing a very good job of denying that entry pass into the center forward. If Landon Donovan would step up this could also hurt Ghana, as the ball out to the side into the channel is where Landon Donovan thrive (although he got a chance and pass the ball to another player for no reason).

....for all the negative innuendo that was coming from roberto martinez and wigan, Richard Kingson has been easily one of Ghana's best players throughout the tournament......and it goes to show how the theory of being a starter for club in order to be a starter for country should never be a hard and fast "rule".

Poor defense.  Stupid tackle.  Legitimate foul.  Penalty.

Ghana playing shit dis half and the US taking it to them.

Deserved goal.

That eh no PK. That right there is soft as hell. Dempsey was going down before any contact. Dempsey been flopping all game. No goal scoring opportunity.

Jonathan make contact with the ball at all?

Dempsey breed Mensah and was in on goal when Jonathan rush een like ah wildman and scythe him down.  But nah... dat sorf.

Like everybody I want Ghana cut dey ass, but Ghana playing shit dis half... dey conceding way too much possession and sooner or later go give up another one if they ent careful.

They trying to sit in, and work the ball up the field. Not happening.

You couldn't score either if yuh wasn't getting service! The man can create and score but he not gettin enough touches. #7 needs tuh drive tuh the byeline and cross instead of trying tuh beat two defenders with a cross from the edge of the box.

US realize that they just have to stand level with the last defender and play through balls. For some reason them centre backs not anticipating and not covering.

Fair result so far. Penalty was a fair call and US and Ghana had chances to win

As for sensationalist commentary, these guys need to take a page out of chris sullivan's book on FSC, they have come along way, no doubt, but still a long way to go, grow with the game guys, your football culture is just beginning to grow

Just the first page of comments alone is part of the reason why so many people around the world dislike americans so much.  They have no idea in their ultra self absorption, how to lose with class and grace.  They swear is their "freedoms" that makes them so disliked but it's their ignorance and low class behaviour.

Mango chow, is not like ppl hate americans, the players or the federation. what i've noticed over the yrs is that non americans are turned off by the arrogance of fans and the sports casting crew, but i really don't think they have ah beef wid americans per say.

And when ah made note of his arrogant comment in a next thread Bakes tell mih nutten wrong with having self confidence before ah game.  That may be true.  The problem with the US is that THEY THINK THEY REACH BEFORE THEY REALLY REACH!!!...Dais what does piss mih off!!!....yes yuh through to next round, yes yuh beat Spain last year and reach the finals of the Confederations Cup, but oh geez and ages, all yuh is not World beaters.  Humble yuh self, take it one at ah time and go through....

Fyah for dem in true.....until they play the sport because they love it and not because they want to show the rest of the World that they could be the best just for being the best sake, then ah will back dem...when they show they are capable of eating humble pie....den ah goh back them until then....

I don't know why people thought Ghana was not expected to win. Neither team was that impressive in the opening rounds and Ghana at least has a historical win v the USA. Anyway Ghana played well, momentary lapses notwithstanding. Good jobs fellas...ah like Boateng's goal. De man pick up the ball from midfield and run down dem men's troats and score. Luv it!!

Lol, yeah I decided to give soccer a chance and watched the games the U.S was in, but the sport is a joke!!! The game requires no strategy or intellect. Having to wait until your defender is with you is equivalent to having the other team in your planning room making your play book!!! To make things worse, the American team was not reflective or the U.S population. It consisted of a bunch of little skinny munchkins who got man handled by the bigger, stronger Ghana team!!! Who knows, maybe next world cup they will actually have "American" men playing for us!

Well the funny thing is that during the Uruguay-South Korea match, the British commentator (was it Derek Rae?), was talking about a potential USA-Uruguay quarterfinal matchup.

Hardly ever any mention of Ghana at all.

Just goes to show, that a game of football is won on the field and not on paper.

Whining on nuff ting in DC, probably a bit harder and more vigorously w/Ghana's victory

Happy for Ghana, hope they can upset Uruguay as they rep. the mother land, it will be tough thoughas their starting right back and center back (younger Mensah) will be out on suspension.

Yuh sure Mensah will be out?  Ah know Ayew have two cards and will have to sit.

Chris sullivan is the only American commentator I truly respect-he knows his football and he is not a homer. He would have been a welcome addition to these espn broadcast.

Christopher Sullivan is Canadian.

FSC ALWAYS throw out his resume as having played for the USMNT so he might only be Canadian by birth or naturalization, but as far as what is projected on FSC, he's american.

*****and if he is Canadian (according to you) it's apparently by naturalization because he born in California.******

Many a player and/or coach get microphones shoved in their faces after heartbreaking losses an/or euphoric victories, and many of them find it in their character to give credit where it is due.....something about being gracious in victory and magnanimous in defeat.......the ones who don't get called out same way, whether they're american or not.  It turned out that neither he nor his coach felt their loss had anything to do with Ghana's play.
Maybe after they "cool off" they'll find the character to admit that their luck ran out.....to a better team.

I dunno why a c**t like you does bother to respond, either, because yuh only talkin' a pack a ass.  Just like yuh dumb bitch ass was quick to call Christopher Sullivan a "Canadian." The first question the man asked him was "why did this team struggle again early in the game?" and donovan said he did not know.  Oh really? I guess Ghana's possession and technical abilty and skill didn't have anything to do with it.  The only time he gave Ghana their credit was when J. Schaap ASKED him what Ghana did.  It shouldn't take a leading question for an honest man to admit what went wrong. They were outplayed by a better team.   No matter where "he would rather be" after the loss, he was glad to have the mic in his face after their other games.

Lol... I could only laugh at you yes fella, it so easy to get you to make ah ass of yuhself.  Christopher Sullivan is as American as Owen Hargreaves is English... but yuh ent have to take my word for it.  As for the other nitpicky comments about Donovan, he didn't just answer "I don't know" and shut up... but went on to explain that their struggles early on had to do with conceding the early goal.  But anyways, the video is there for all to see... your hormonal ranting aside.

Congrats Ghana- very good game. 10 out of 10 first half performance.  The U.S. switched up the formation in the 2nd half by bringing on an extra midfielder (Benny Feilhaber- sp?) and Ghana took a long time to adjust.  They were not finding the space to dominate the possession like they did in the first half.  Ghana also got sloppy with the ball at the back, and it seemed like the U.S chances were coming mostly off of Ghana mistakes- they got their shape back in the last 10 mins of the 2nd half, and the U.S. couldn't see their way after that- it was pure hit and hope in extra time.  Couple observations:

1- Ghana was the fitter team- surprisingly. I really thought that the U.S would be fitter.  Either that or the U.S. tired themselves out going for it in the 2nd half but in extra time Ghana continued to stroke it around and move off the ball while the U.S. was just hitting and hoping, and looking like a 3rd division English team.

2- Taking off Altidore in extra time was a mistake unless he was tired or hurt.  Altidore carried the U.S. team this cup as far as a physical presence up top goes.  As soon as the U.S. fell into the hit and hope game, the lack of physical presence up top meant that they were relying on a lucky bounce and mistakes to get a goal.

3- Prince Boateng is discovering himself in this World Cup.  Before he pulled up, he was the MOM IMO.

4- Ghana's football intellect in this game seemed to be on a higher level than the U.S. based on how they moved the ball in and out of the spaces, and played themselves out of difficult situations all over the field.  For a young team they were so calm in extra time too- I was surprised.  The U.S. got a fair amount of chances out of sheer relentlessness and lapses in concentration by the opposition, but in terms of pure football they were not on the same level as Ghana in most parts of the field.

5- Ghana looks more than capable of beating Uruguay but I'm not convinced yet that they can go toe to toe with the Brazil's and Argentina's of the world....but they seem to be improving with every game so who knows?

Being coached by Bob Bradley finally catches up to U.S.

It was bound to happen and against Ghana it did, perhaps a bit earlier than it really should have. The U.S. just fell behind one too many times and their exciting run worth a lot of praise came to an end against a solid Ghana team that deserved the 2-1 win in extra time.

Still, it's difficult to ignore the glaring problems that set this U.S. team up for what can reasonably seen as premature failure. They fought incredibly hard and showed amazing resilience, but in the end, many of the reasons the U.S. is now out of the World Cup can be traced back to coach Bob Bradley.

Coaches are often made into scapegoats and the targets of misguided frustration, but in the case of Bradley it's clear that blame is deserved. In the Ghana game alone, his mistakes were blatant and lethal.

[Photos: More images from the United States' loss to Ghana]

Instead of sticking with the lineup that got them a win over Algeria, he reinserted midfielder Ricardo Clark, who was culpable for England's quick goal against the U.S. in their opening match and all speed but no finish striker Robbie Findley. As a result, the U.S. ended up allowing yet another early goal in just the fifth minute of play off a ball given up by Clark, who then earned a yellow card two minutes later. Bradley finally realized his mistake and pretty much admitted it by substituting Clark in just the 30th minute. Findley, meanwhile, blew a fantastic chance to score by kicking the ball right at the goalkeeper. He was substituted at halftime for Benny Feilhaber, who made an instant impact that could have been just as useful in the first half. That left just one substitute to use after the half in a match that would end up going to extra time.

These issues are hardly new, though. As far back as the World Cup qualifying campaign, the U.S. has been giving up early goals -- a clear sign of poor preparation -- and both Clark and Findley have been proving their shortcomings, as have other players that Bradley stubbornly stuck with time and time again. And so the early goals kept coming, the wrong players kept sneaking into the starting XI, and against Ghana -- a team that only scored off of two penalty kicks in the entirety of the group stage -- it ended. After the match, Landon Donovan said the U.S. was just "too naive," which can really only be taken as a critique of their unacceptable preparation for a team they were favored to beat.

The Fire Bob Bradley campaign has been around for years now and has only been dismissed by the U.S. federation because the team kept rolling along in spite of its coach and his chronic mismanagement. Now that the rolling has stopped and U.S. fans are left frustrated over a favorable path to a World Cup semifinal squandered, it's time to thank Bradley for his commitment and the successes that he did bring and finally bring on a manager who can fully realize the potential (which, to be clear, is far from limitless) this squad has. Or at the very least won't constantly serve as a handicap to a national team ready to mature.

i think the usa team was fitter than ghana but simply got tired dealing with the physical strength of the ghanians...their fitness is their main strength and it works against most teams except the physically stronger ones (i.e. their collapse against Brazil in the Confed Cup)

as for Coach Bradley, i think he did a great job for dem but the US "fans" need to blame somebody.....after watching the game with plenty of dem i does wonder if their fans know anyhting about football, most of dem said Bradley the player was one of the worst in de world cup and i was wondering if i was stevie wonder....but i feel they judge performance only on goals scored so donovan was great.

None of your observations surprised me, I expected the Ghanaians to be as fit if not fitter than the americans and what you describe as their football intellect is what I was calling their "talent" earlier on.  I had faith in them beating the usa.  I eh so sure about beating Uruguay, though.....I think Uruguay have a lot more experience, skill and savvy than the us and would prove a tougher opponent...but would be ecstatic to see another Ghanaian victory.  I was also (quietly) hoping that the usa would have been emotionally fatigued after their three group games.  I was hoping that those games took alot out of them to be able to keep up with Ghana.  Don't know how much it may have been a factor, but you never know.

Yeah I hear what you're saying about their talent.  I honestly wasn't impressed with Ghana in their first two games- but I liked what I saw against Germany, and I think they stepped it up another notch in this game (or maybe the U.S. was just weaker opposition)...

Uruguay will be stubborn and their striking pair is on another level compared to anything they saw today against the U.S. so yeah it will be a tough one, but I think they have what it takes to mix it up and come out on top.  Korea ran rings around Uruguay for long periods today......

I just finish watching the replay. I had class today. After watching the game I have to agree with Mango Chow. Ghana were superior to the USA by far. In the 1st half especially the difference was glaring. The US played a more talented team and for once a team that are superior to them physically as well. The American defender actually try to foul Gyan and the man still recover to shake the onion bag.

The English will make their exit tomorrow for the same reasons.

Sorry they didn't win, but credit to Ghana, they played some good football.

At leats USA left with their heads held high and also represented CONCACAF well.

Young Mensah, the back of shirt says Jonathan to distinguish him from capt Mensah, so said the caption on the coverage when he received the yellow, would be great if they were wrong.

Yes, CS is Canadian, but I think you get the point re-the nature of his commentary and how interwoven both countries are from the perspective of the major leagues

I not doubting yuh with regards to Mensah (yeah, ah know he and the Capt. share names), I was more surprised because I didn't hear it mentioned during the game.  Probably missed it.  I echo ribbit's sentiment on Ayew though, that yute run real ball in all four of Ghana's games thus far.  I think they'll real miss him down the right flank against Uruguay... who good for a few yellow card tackles in defense.  In the least he would have helped create opportunities for them from set pieces.

Aside from that, as a longtime fan of Christopher Sullivan, I definitely get the point... it's one that I myself have made in the past, it's no secret that I consider him to be the best commentator this side of the Atlantic.  Harkes would be as well, but he seems to have regressed during qualification and then these games.  I've been real disappointed by how biased and shallow his commentary has been.

Harkes and Lalas let their patriotism, and their US senior team alum status influence what supposed to be "independent" commentary...It ultimately infringes on their professionalism.

I think allyuh making too much of that "foul"... Bocanegra was in a footrace for the ball and try to hit Gyan a shoulder-to-shoulder tackle.  On a fifty-fifty ball that's not a foul.  I did like Bocanegra's reaction after Gyan shrug it off doh LOL.  Even before Gyan size up de strike Bocanegra throw he head back and pull up like he dun know what was about to happen.  Only Howard and DeMerit act like dey didn't read de script.  What a killer finish though... beautiful goal, even the Americans raving about it.  I dunno why allyuh bothering reading that trash on Yahoo where any idiot with internet access can give free reign to his ignorance.  The Yanks on the NYT "Goal" blog (which is actually moderated) have for the most part been very balanced in recognizing that they were up against a superior squad who actually lived up to the billing this time.  Some starting to think of this as a rivalry... and might be nice to see the USSF promote it as such by organizing some friendlies in future.

Poor Adu and Edu though.

Harkes would be as well, but he seems to have regressed during qualification and then these games.  I've been real disappointed by how biased and shallow his commentary has been.

I have to agree.  I not on Lalas because I never really confuse he fuh ah professional, but Harkes at one point was on a trajectory towards respectability in terms of his analysis and insight.  In reality I think he reach he level with MLS games.  He not ready for international duty yet.

didn't see the game and unfortunately didn't see the replay, but I'm starting to think the only reason i don't share the irrational haterade some of you have for them is that i don't have to listen to their commentary. I can empathise; I remember Atlanta 96...

Sound like the better team one, bradley got his starting tactics wrong (again), and there are idiots (and american ones at that) on the internet. Nothing new under the sun.

Interesting that nobody quoted this comment:
Quote
My congratulations to Ghana. The US made a valiant effort. I'm proud of them. Good luck to all the remaining teams. But I hope the remaining African team goes all the way. Very sorry to see such ignorant comments coming out from both sides. We should be treating the big blue ball (earth) as seriously as we do the smaller white one (football). Peace and talk to you in 4 years.

Too "atypical i guess ::)

Congrats to the US for representing Concacaf well, congrats for Ghana for striking one up for Africa who to be frank, needed it more that Concacaf did.

Suddenly i'm even more upset that Mexico finished second in their group...I just don't know how they'll be beating Argentina in any configuration.

Harsh.

Unlike American football a "turnover" in football hardly ever changes a game.  In this case Clark turn it over at midfield but Boateng still had to negotiate the entire defensive half of the US field in order to score.  In doing so there was no defensive cover... Clark and DeMerit were the only two who were close.  Where was the center half Bocanegra?  And what of Howard... that was a poor goal to give up near post, not like it had blistering pace on it, he was just caught flat-footed.

And then Findley... Heskey kick the ball straight at Howard belly and he get rave up fuh being a great keeper by Harkes et al.  In this case Findley try to pick out near post and required a damn good reflexive kick save from Kingson in order to keep the ball out the net.  Why no kudos to Kingson for the same, but instead blame for Findley?  These two... and Bradley by extension is all the critics harping on.  They need to harp on the fact that the US needed a fluke against England; a near miracle against Slovenia... and a last ditch effort against Algeria to even be where they were.  Clark and Findley hardly fack up anything for them, more than they reach they level.

Love this from a fan in The Daily Mail

"Oh dear, how sad - never mind
Obviously Ghana learned to play the English game of football better than the Americans
They've watched Beckham for a year - and still learnt nothing
Maybe they should stick to their girls games, such as rounders (baseball), netball (basketball) and rugby (football) - where they have to wear suits of armour in case they they get a little bruise
Maybe they should also shut up and stop telling the world they're better at everything than anyone else?
It would have been even better if they'd lost (at soccer) to North Korea"

US-Ghana Sets (American) Viewing Records for Men's World Cup

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:02 p.m. ET

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- The United States' 2-1 loss to Ghana in extra time, which eliminated the Americans from the tournament in South Africa, was the most-watched men's World Cup game in both households and viewers.

Saturday's game, which began at 2:30 p.m. EDT on ABC, received an 8.2 fast national rating, ESPN said Sunday. It was seen in 9,455,000 households and by 14,863,000 viewers. Only the 1999 Women's World Cup final, featuring the United States and China at the Rose Bowl, averaged more households (11,307,000) and viewers (17,975,000) for a soccer game.

The U.S.-Ghana game was also the third highest-rated men's World Cup game on record, behind only the 1994 final between Italy and Brazil (9.5 rating) and the round of 16 game that same year between the United States and Brazil (9.3 rating). The 1999 Women's World Cup final delivered an 11.4 rating.

World Cup Ratings Certify a TV Winner

By RICHARD SANDOMIR

For the ESPN empire and Univision, any questions about the return on their investment in the World Cup are being answered by viewers. On Saturday, the United States’ loss to Ghana was seen by 14.9 million on ABC — an American record for the tournament — and an additional 4.5 million on Univision.

That’s 19.4 million viewers for a Round of 16 game on a Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Eastern — the same number that Fox averaged over six prime-time games for last year’s World Series.

“That’s phenomenal,” said Stephen Master, the vice president for sports at the Nielsen Company. “If the U.S. had kept going, to the quarters and semifinal, you would have gotten really big numbers.”

Master compared the viewership for the United States-Ghana game with February’s gold medal Olympic game, won by Canada over the United States, which attracted an average of 27.6 million viewers. “It was colder, with people not outside, but this was summer,” he said.

Then, on Sunday, Argentina’s win over Mexico was seen by 9.4 million Univision viewers, a record for any program on Spanish-language television in the United States. An additional 5.5 million watched on ABC.

Also on Sunday, 7.9 million watched Germany beat England on ESPN and Univision.

Executives of both companies said that the tournament’s performance had exceeded their expectations — a considerable claim given ESPN’s assertion that its World Cup marketing campaign was the biggest one it had ever mounted for a single event (and that includes some of its self-congratulatory anniversaries).

“This is a good, sound financial proposition for us,” said John Skipper, ESPN’s executive vice president for content. “We have the 2014 rights in Brazil, at a favorable time that gives us a favorable financial opportunity.” Rio de Janeiro’s time zone is one hour later than New York’s, pushing games to prime time and ad rates higher.

Cesar Conde, the president of Univision Networks, said, “We’re bringing in more revenue than in any previous World Cup.” That is a good development because the company’s rights fee is much larger than ever before.

Each media conglomerate acquired a package of rights from FIFA that features both World Cups and Women’s World Cups through 2014. ESPN paid $100 million, Univision $325 million.

Through 52 games, ESPN’s average viewership is up 58 percent to 2.86 million; Univision’s is 2.1 million, up nearly 9 percent. Figure, then, that about five million are watching the games, comparable to the N.B.A. playoffs, excluding the finals
, and the Stanley Cup finals. And, as Master said, the games have all been shown in daytime in the United States.

“If you consider that, the World Cup numbers are fantastic,” Master said.

ESPN executives say there are various signposts of the South African World Cup’s success: a 28 percent increase from 2006 in ratings for games not including the United States team; a 38 percent jump in the rating for men 18 to 49; and a 29 percent increase in ratings in Hispanic households, which does not seem to have hurt Univision.

The World Cup is also proving to be a laboratory for viewers watching the games streamed on ESPN3.com (as well as on UnivisionFutbol.com); a reason ESPN.com traffic is up 70 percent over its traditional annual peak of online mania during the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament; and a hotbed for out-of-home viewing in bars and restaurants.

Glenn Enoch, ESPN’s vice president for integrated media research, said that the data he had seen suggested that 50 percent more people — beyond the 2.86 million viewers measured by Nielsen — were watching the World Cup on televisions outside their homes, on ESPN3.com, on mobile devices and on radio.

“We’ve seen an 18 percent lift in our out-of-home ratings in the East Coast,” he said.

He added that ESPN’s investment in the World Cup was “an investment in the future.”

Enoch said, “There is a growing interest in soccer, and there’s certainly growth in the Hispanic population.” How much of the post-World Cup afterglow will be reflected in Major League Soccer attendance and viewership remains to be seen.

ESPN’s devotion to the World Cup may be serving as its audition for the Olympics. ESPN and NBC are the leading bidders for the rights to the 2014 and 2016 Winter and Summer Games, which will probably be auctioned next year. Skipper has vowed to carry everything live from the Olympics if ESPN wins, regardless of the time.

Of course, there are far more sports at an Olympics and many more entrenched audiences to satisfy.

“I’m told median age for the World Cup viewers is 37, and the Olympics 52,” said Brad Adgate, the senior vice president for research at Horizon Media, an advertising agency, indicating that the network that could reach younger viewers had an advantage. “The Olympics are a remnant of the cold war, and the World Cup is part of the country’s ethnic diversity, the way this country is gradually moving.”

Tempting to say "so what... who cares if more Americans are watching what the world already know, the best sporting event in the world."  I personally think it's wise to resist such temptation, the more people watching the game in the US means the more likely we are to see more football broadcast in the US... that's huge.  Imagine a couple months ago there was an EPL match on Fox, not FSC, but FOX, network (free) TV.

Personally this is great news to see the numbers for the games... now ESPN should realize that next time they could step up and get not only the EPL games from FSC, but La Liga and Serie A from GOL as well.  Better broadcasts (at least the visuals) are guaranteed... and for those in TnT, possibly even more games streamed from ESPN International.  Speaking of 'streaming'... for those of us who happen to be at work or wherever, this also means more football on the computer, via ESPN3.com.

Good times.

That aside... their comments about Kingson's are in keeping with the praises everyone's heaping on him.  It is well-known that many good keepers seem to hit their stride later on in their careers, seems Kingson has started a similar late peak.  I'm sure he's already played himself into a bigger contract, and some good buffer money for Martinez and Wigan.

U.S. soccer has a long way to go

POSTED:

June 29, 2010  By Bob Ford

Inquirer Sports Columnist

The eternally half-full glass that is the United States men's national soccer program had another occasionally interesting run through the World Cup. It was certainly more interesting than four years before, when the team was dismissed with hardly a whimper, but still fell far short of the promise made in 2002, when the U.S. team advanced to the quarterfinal round.

As usual, it is difficult to tell if the team - and more broadly, the level of the sport - is still going steadily forward in this country after it was bounced in the second round of the finals by a Ghana squad that is talented but hardly among the game's elite.

Consider: If prior to the tournament, the U.S. team was assured of advancing further than powerful sides like Italy, France and Greece, and of going just as far as England and regional rival Mexico, that might be an outcome the U.S. Soccer Federation would have accepted sight unseen.

But also consider: If given the knowledge that the United States would have a lead for only three minutes of the 390 minutes it would play, would fail to get a goal from a striker for the second straight World Cup finals, and would display an unfortunate tendency to run about without urgency until really pressed, and that might not be as good a showing.

That is what happened, however. The U.S. team did win its group by the fickle mathematics of the round-robin, but needed a dying-light goal from Landon Donovan against a spotty Algerian team in the final group game to avoid elimination and utter embarrassment.

Had the U.S. gone into the second round and found itself matched up against a world power, but played well in a losing effort, the players could have come home with their heads high and their mission mostly accomplished.

Instead, the U.S. was eliminated by Ghana for the second straight World Cup, and they didn't play their best in doing so. They continued their habit of sleepwalking through the first half, fell behind Ghana, rallied decently in the second half to tie, then lost in overtime, when the U.S. looked totally gassed.

"It happens. What are you going to say?" said team captain Landon Donovan, who had three of the team's five goals in the finals.

If that shrugging acceptance is disappointing, it is also not unusual during Donovan's reign as the face of the team and man most responsible for imparting the urgency, not to mention shepherding the ball through the midfield. It would be wrong to blame Donovan entirely for the team's personality, but it's a factor that is hard to ignore.

"Big players play in big minutes. Today, unfortunately, we didn't have enough of those players," said goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had a solid tournament and deserved a better fate.

Head coach Bob Bradley might have lost his best chance to make a real splash in this World Cup when striker Charlie Davies was injured in an automobile accident last year. Davies, in combination with Jozy Altidore, would have given the U.S. a more dangerous set of forwards. They might even have scored a goal.

As it was, the strikers didn't do so, as they haven't since Brian McBride put one in the net against Mexico on June 17, 2002. The U.S. has played nearly 14 hours in World Cup finals matches since that goal, which, by any measure, is a long shutout being pitched against its primary goal scorers.

"That is the greatest challenge in the game, to have someone who can consistently score goals," Bradley said.

Developing a pool of those creative talents has been difficult, and in the words of former national team coach Steve Sampson - who suffered his own embarrassment in France in 1998 - the United States is a "nation of midfielders."

The structured climb up the ziggurat of the national soccer program leads the best young players through elite club teams, youth academies, resident programs, and age-group national teams. That process turns out very sound athletes who are strong on fundamentals and discipline, but can't seem to muster the brilliance in the box of players from those nations whose stars rise from barefoot matches in the street or endless games of pickup in the park.

Those other nations also have the advantage of placing their best athletes on the soccer field. That is not the case in the United States, and a circumstance that doesn't look likely to change any time soon.

Still, that doesn't mean the U.S. can't keep improving and can't put together a squad that needs more than luck and overachieving to really compete for the world's greatest sporting prize.

The soccer federation would do well to rethink some its methods, however, and the result from South Africa should add some motivation. Of course, the result from Germany four years ago should have done the same thing, and the U.S. showed up again this time with essentially the same team-building philosophy and the same indeterminate style of play.

When the best result of the tournament - judging things by world rankings and the level of opponent - is a 1-1 draw with England on a goal that was hardly earned, then it's time for the U.S. soccer hierarchy to put away the noisemakers and get back to work.

Giggsy, no offense, but, this article eh makin' much sense, either.  One of the problems with americans is their totally inflated sense of worth in the game of "soccer". They would do well to start looking at the collective individual talent of teams like Ghana and see how a team like that compares to a team like theirs, rather than look at Ghana's world ranking (which is where the fickle mathematics really come in, if yuh arkse me) and use that to be so dismissive of a team like Ghana.  They fail to see that most of these African teams are underachieving in these World Cup tournaments and how their team tends to overachieve accordingly.  I totally respect what the americans bring to the game: fitness, fundamentals and discipline!! They have been beating us and the rest of concacaf from pillar to post with them three things.  But they fail to realize that there are other things to this sport.  There are elements of creativity and artistry that are NOT a part of the american game and as much as the article calls america "....a nation of midfielders..." that creativity and artistry tends to be most evident in midfield play.   I always ask the question, for a nation of 300+ million people, has the usa ever produced (or as they see it, developed) a player the likes of Dwight Yorke or Russel Latapy?  We all know the answer to that question.  If they think it's a fluke that Ghana beat them in successive WC's then they don't have it in them to see what's wrong with their "soccer" and fix it.

Actually I thought the article did a good job of focusing on the faulty mind set and shortcomings of the team and those who have been trying to build a team that can complete with the footballing nations. That I felt was unlike other American media who have bleeted the opinion that this American side is better that they showed.

The last time I read the NY Post was sometime in the late 80s- early 90s.  Back when it was owned by Rupert Murdoch.  Not sure if he still owns it.  Suffice to say Murdoch was the former owner of ManU... and the present owner of Fox... home of Faux News.  The Daily News isn't much better... but unlike Newsday and The Post, the Daily News didn't seem to just be parroting what ownership wanted printed.  Why would I spend good sweet drink money to read what Murdoch telling he people to print?

nice article giggsy.

mango chow, the quote in the article about the americans' "indeterminate style of play" seems to address your point about the "elements of creativity and artistry" absent in the american game.

also, the following suggests a response to your query about the dearth of "soccer stars" produced by the usa:

Quote
Those other nations also have the advantage of placing their best athletes on the soccer field. That is not the case in the United States, and a circumstance that doesn't look likely to change any time soon.

an acknowledgement of the low standing soccer has in the american sports pecking order.

i don't know about this part though - ah mean alot of the players that reach the world cup stage showing "brilliance" were groomed at a young age by programs as good or better than the us "national soccer program". maybe those espn montages corrupting perceptions of what kind of training is required to reach this level.

Quote
The structured climb up the ziggurat of the national soccer program leads the best young players through elite club teams, youth academies, resident programs, and age-group national teams.
