Title: WC 2010 - Match 58 - Quarter-finals: Uruguay vs Ghana
Post by: E-man on June 27, 2010, 02:50:23 PM
Match 58 - Quarter-finals - 02 July
Johannesburg - Soccer City Stadium

(no head2head history)

Uruguay-Ghana preview (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249718/match=300061508/preview.html)

Although Uruguay have a rich FIFA World Cup™ history, they have not advanced as far as the quarter-finals since their run to the last four in 1970. Ghana, their opponents on Friday night, have never gone this far in the tournament before, having reached the second round four years ago on their FIFA World Cup debut.

In both 2006 and in South Africa, the Black Stars were Africa's only representatives in the knock-out rounds, and they can also become the first ever side from the continent to advance to a semi-final with a win. Standing in the way of Africa's hopes is an in-form La Celeste led by one of the most dynamic front-lines at the tournament.

The match
Uruguay-Ghana, Johannesburg (Soccer City), 2 July, 20.30

For a team that struggled to qualify for the finals, Uruguay emerged as one of the dark horses of the opening stage after finishing top of Group A. After opening the event with a scoreless draw with France, they have secured three consecutive wins, largely thanks to the form of strikers Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez. Forlan scored a brace in the 3-0 dismantling of the hosts, while Suarez scored the trio of Uruguay's goals in the 1-0 win over Mexico and 2-1 victory over Korea Republic. Edinson Cavani is the most unheralded of the attacking triumvirate, but the Palermo forward can also be lethal if unchecked. However, Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has earned a reputation for his tactical acumen, and the Serb has built one of Africa's finest defences.

With so much history on the line, Ghana could be forgiven for being overawed with the occasion, but the Black Stars are seemingly unflappable despite being the youngest team in the tournament. A side boasting several players who won the FIFA U-20 World Cup last year, they finished runners-up at January's CAF Africa Cup of Nations on the back of three consecutive 1-0 wins. They also held their nerve in a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over South Africa 2010's comeback kings, USA, in the second round. Asamoah Gyan has scored three of the side's four goals, and despite being hampered by an ankle injury, should be the fulcrum of the Ghana attack. Kevin-Prince Boateng also appears likely to win his fitness race, though the loss of starlet Andre Ayew to suspension will be painful. The door might now be open for the comeback of little-used Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari, and the possible return of previously injured centre-half Isaac Vorsah could also be a major boost.

Players to watch
Luis Suarez v John Mensah

A veteran anchor at the back for Ghana, John Mensah will need to call on all of his experience to stop the speed and creativity of the Uruguay attack. The 23-year-old Ajax striker Suarez is technically adept and capable of scoring from anywhere around the box. Although the powerful Mensah should have the advantage in the air, he could well be challenged for pace on the counter-attack, though the potential return of Vorsah could provide him with significant assistance.

The stat
7 – Asamoah Gyan has scored seven goals for Ghana out of the 11 they have tallied in full international matches in 2010. Ayew, Boateng, Muntari and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie have claimed the others.

What they said
"They are fast, strong, and they have done well in other games, even against Germany," Diego Forlan, Uruguay forward.

"They have a great team, especially in attack. This is what we have to watch out for because they have players like Forlan and Suarez," Asamoah Gyan, Ghana striker.

Voice of the fans
"Both teams have impressed me. Ghana has shown speed and a great ability to pass. Their defence is not the best but their ability to fire an attack has shown. I think that the first side to score will win. In this case, Ghana will pull through," FIFA.com user OnTarget06.

The question
Can Ghana eclipse Cameroon's exploits in 1990 and Senegal's in 2002 to become the first African side in the last four? Or will the two-time champions Uruguayans keep their good run going in a tournament where the South American teams have been immensely difficult to beat?

Hope Prince recovery from injury in time.  Young Mensah to me looked quite anxious against the US, so wondering who will be his back up.  Good to be able to bring in Appiah for leadership, but not sure he can run a full 90.  Muntari needs to step up and be a leader, hasn't been thus far.  Ayew will be a big loss, hard to believe the ages of some of these players, he, Prince, and Annan in particular.  They are just so impressive, come Pep buy Prince quick!

Go Black Stars!

Strong, quick striker who scored 8 goals in the U20 World  Cup last year. AC Milan signed him late last year. I was most impressed with him and Ayew in that tournament.

Nah, if Ghana is to win, they have to do it early, if not, it would be Uruguay killing them late in the game.

Ghana 2-1  :beermug:

The Ghana team in 2006 was stronger than the present team. The way the 2006 team beat Chech, after Czechoslovakia had run over the US ... one of the best games back then.  The present 2008 team  really lack strikers, but it is possible to pull out a win against Uruguay. Wishing the Black Stars all the luck.

Keeping error but Golazo anyway.

That isn't a keeping error, the ball curve back away from him from where it, and he, was going. It was a good strike.I seeing plenty of that in this cup. The ball REAL curving on almost any strike. Could be the ball.

Personally, I like it.

Keeping error but Golazo anyway.

That isn't a keeping error, the ball curve back away from him from where it, and he, was going. It was a good strike.I seeing plenty of that in this cup. The ball REAL curving on almost any strike. Could be the ball.

Personally, I like it.

Yeah, ah tink dat was JG firse reaction prior to seein de replay, golasso

WTF........Sorry Muntari...ah never rate yuh before but that was ridiculous. Totally unexpected, curving away from the keeper. Uruguay like they fall back into they qualifying form.

Go Ghana.

Ah Germany Ghana replay would be nice for the final.

Me thinks Uruguay have no plan B. They came out hot and heavy then Ghana realize they have a match tuh play and start playing and what can Uruguay do diffrent in attack to pressure Ghana?

a PK should be a sure goal but like gyan kicking PKs like shaq with the FTs

espn stat: gyan the only player to miss PKs in two world cups.

But this real traumatising.

I could only imagine what Gyan feeling about now.

Yuh right oui. Pact with the devil ... trade a place in the starting lineup for a berth in the semis.
Today has been extremely dramatic. Hell of a difference between the group stage and the elimination rounds in all aspects ... player commitment, officiating intrigue, and well, EVERYTHING.

It eh have nutten right about that BS he post!! the fact of the matter is, the joker deliberately cheated by handling the ball off the line and it worked out to his teams advantage!!  is shyte like this that is ruining the sooo called "beautiful game".

them spanish and dem have no respect for the game! none whatsoever! if they not fakin they divin, they doing all kinda low down things tuh win, and to me dat really killin the sport.

i think it should have ah rule that if yuh handle ah ball from going in ah goal, then the goal should be counted without ah penalty! JMO!

just now i will stop watchin internationals and champions league, BC these latins really doh have no respect for the game, they are ah bunch of thieves!! and they corrupted like their countries leaders!!

PS: i iz not no ghana fan, so it eh have nutten tuh do wid dat! i knew ghana woulda lose, BC they struggled tuh score goals in all their matches. it's just that when i see ppl doing this kinda lowcho tuh win ah game, it's rather sadening, and is mostly spanish who does be doing dem kind BS!!

Gyan had real pressure on him. He has to deal with the result more than anybody. He scored twice already from the spot in this tournament. You'd think he was a good position to make it 3. He changed his spot this time and got it all wrong. Tough !!

Suarez took a good red card for his team, I would have done the same thing.

How you so sure Holland go crush Uraguay. Stop being sentimental and watch the way Uraguay plays. Not pretty. But hardnose and pragmatic. And they have skill. You can't take that away from them. Yes they fall and roll around, but the other teams do it, even the Dutch throw they selve and roll around today. Ask Robinho. Remember Uraguay also have a kind of Dutch mentality. How does a small fish survive among the big fish. They have done extremely well for 3 or so million people.Even England can't match their record.  Don't let all yuh feelings cloud all yuh judgement.

And when it come to racial issues, Uraguay ain't no different from the rest of Latin Amer. when it comes to the treatment of black people. They have a small black pop. as compared to Brazil, but they had no issues intodrucing black players to the international game. When the Olimpics games winner was the de facto world champions, Uraguay had black players. Brazil did not. Toppa,
yes the man cheated and he paid the price. He got the red card and cannot play next game. You want them to change to rule that if a man hands a ball going into the goal, the goal should be given anyhow. Or give a penalty with a GK? The man had the pk and wasted it. I really feel for Ghana, because in the second round they play some good skill football unlike the rest of the African teams. The Africans came play ball. The problem with them is the local associations are out in left field. All ah them.

Yeah I think FIFA lapsing. The game needs cleaning up a lot. Little things like that should not be allowed parts of the game. They need to take a much tougher stance on the faking and diving too, with penalties issued after the game on video review. There were too many missed corners and incorrect calls. That eh part of the game, thats overloaded officials.
Yes yuh right, is time for video replays to help referees in this game.

I eh go lie that game take everything out of me.. I feeling low like somebody dead and i eh even feeling to watch no more world cup.

I real feeling it for Gyan, the man had the whole ah Africa on he back and poops on heself.. It go be reaall hard to get over that, like ah man tell me he go be 80 and FSC will run ah replay.

As for Suarez i not gonna hate on him, the man take a hit for the team and it pay off. If i was in the same situation with my country on the line I was doing the same frigging thing.. and even though i agree it is very similar to what Henry did, something to me is much more sinister in Henry's case than blocking a shot on the line because at least by reflex he throw something behind the ball instead of premeditatedly dribbling the football with yuh hand.

I also doh agree with changing no rule. "The ball must cross the line" is the fundamental rule of the sport regardless of whatever.. I see a fan run from behind the goal and stop a goal, i see a dog run on the field and block a goal, so who is Suarez?

Hard luck Ghana, but you were the best, most disciplined African team I've ever witnessed in a World Cup who I actually thought was in with a shout for the final. You did your nation and continent proud.

When people watch this kinda drama thing, how they could really rate other sports above football boy?? Steups

I never feel pain for any non-T&T side before today.
That was a cruel loss!
The problem is that Ghana only have themselves to blame.
Real good game, most drama I see so far.
I would like to see another game top that.
Title: Tears across the continent

Tears across the continent
FIFA.com

There were tears on the pitch. There were tears in the stands. There were tears all across Africa as the continent's lone standard-bearers crashed out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Asamoah Gyan, so often the hero for the Black Stars of Ghana, cried hardest, chest heaving as his team-mates took turns holding him up. His miss from the spot in the final second of extra time forced a shoot-out in which the Ghanaians came up second best.

Outside the stadium – that magnificent, hulking monument to African football that is Soccer City – there were more arms outstretched to Gyan and his Black Stars. "We still love them, we still love Gyan and all of our boys," said Apeni, from Ghana, still dancing, still waving her flag and trumpeting her vuvuzela. "These are our boys and we support them forever," said Nii, with his arm around his cousin, both of them draped in the red, green and yellow of Ghana. They travelled all the way from Accra and they were both still smiling. "Things could have gone differently, but football is heartbreak sometimes and we'll be back in 2014 with brave hearts!" With five players aged 20 or under in the squad, Nii's words might well prove right when the FIFA World Cup lands in Brazil.

More than 84,000 fans packed Soccer City in Johannesburg, and the vast majority of them were fervently behind the Black Stars, the lone surviving African side after the elimination of hosts South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria, Nigeria and Cameroon in the group stages. There was palpable disappointment around the ground but pride, dignity and human compassion were dominant. "We had it on our hands," lamented Monde, 23, born and raised in Soweto. "You see a great team when you look at the Ghanaians and they are our team tonight, we salute them as Africans."

After losing out in the cruel lottery of a penalty shoot-out, Ghana missed their chance at history. Had they won they would have been the first side from the continent to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final. Instead, they now join Cameroon and Senegal on the cusp of that great next step. Milovan Rajevac's team is a young one, though, and the pan-African supporters are hoping for more in the future. "I am going to Brazil in four years and I will watch an African team reach even farther," smiled Justin, a white South African, taking a last sip of beer before heading out of the emptying ground.

It was one of the most dramatic games of the first finals held on African soil and the tears of Gyan and his mates will dry, for they have done their continent proud. Having reached the knock-out stages for the second straight time, a banner that remained hanging from one of the tiers in the stadium seemed to say it all. "Thanks Ghana" it read simply in red letters. It is a sentiment shared by all of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town. "They have no cause to cry," said Nii as he and his cousin walked slowly into the darkness, propping each other up as they went. "They made the world see that we Africans can play football. Play it with grace and we'll have our day, I know we will."

Greetings all this is my first post on this here forum yeah so just bear with de I man... Bless...

I would like to see a change in the laws of the game...
I would also like to point out that the laws of the game are as follows below, and that these laws are taken directly from FIFA's handbook.

A goal is scored when the whole of the ball passes over the goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, provided that no infringement of the Laws of the Game has been committed previously by the team scoring the goal.

Infringements and sanctions
In the event of an offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred (see Law 13 – Position of free kick).
LAW 11 – OFFSIDE

LAW 12 – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT

Fouls and misconduct are penalised as follows:

Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force: •   kicks or attempts to kick an opponent •   trips or attempts to trip an opponent •   jumps at an opponent •   charges an opponent •   strikes or attempts to strike an opponent •   pushes an opponent •   tackles an opponent
A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences: •   holds an opponent •   spits at an opponent
•   handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
A direct free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred (see Law 13 – Position of free kick).

Penalty kick

A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.

Indirect free kick

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences: •   controls the ball with his hands for more than six seconds before releasing
it from his possession •   touches the ball again with his hands after he has released it from his
possession and before it has touched another player •   touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him
by a team-mate •   touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a
throw-in taken by a team-mate

An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee, a player: •   plays in a dangerous manner •   impedes the progress of an opponent
•   prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands •   commits any other offence, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which
play is stopped to caution or send off a player

The indirect free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred (see Law 13 – Position of free kick).

LAW 12 – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT

Disciplinary sanctions

The yellow card is used to communicate that a player, substitute or substituted player has been cautioned.

The red card is used to communicate that a player, substitute or substituted player has been sent off.

Only a player, substitute or substituted player may be shown the red or yellow card.

The referee has the authority to take disciplinary sanctions from the moment he enters the field of play until he leaves the field of play after the final whistle.
A player who commits a cautionable or sending-off offence, either on or off the field of play, whether directed towards an opponent, a team-mate, the referee, an assistant referee or any other person, is disciplined according to the nature of the offence committed.

Cautionable offences

A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences: • unsportingbehaviour •   dissent by word or action
•   persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game •   delaying the restart of play •   failure to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner
kick, free kick or throw-in •   entering or re-entering the field of play without the referee’s permission •   deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission

A substitute or substituted player is cautioned if he commits any of the following three offences: • unsportingbehaviour •   dissent by word or action
•   delaying the restart of play

Sending-off offences
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences: •   serious foul play • violent conduct
•   spitting at an opponent or any other person •   denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within
his own penalty area) •   denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving
towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a
penalty kick •   using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures •   receiving a second caution in the same match

A player, substitute or substituted player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.

LAW 12 – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT   (Continued)

LAW 13 – FREE KICKS
Types of free kick
Free kicks are either direct or indirect.
The direct free kick
Ball enters the goal
•   if a direct free kick is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal is awarded
•   if a direct free kick is kicked directly into the team’s own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team
The indirect free kick
Signal
The referee indicates an indirect free kick by raising his arm above his head. He maintains his arm in that position until the kick has been taken and the ball has touched another player or goes out of play.
Ball enters the goal
A goal can be scored only if the ball subsequently touches another player before it enters the goal: •   if an indirect free kick is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal kick
is awarded •   if an indirect free kick is kicked directly into the team’s own goal, a corner
kick is awarded to the opposing team
Procedure
For both direct and indirect free kicks, the ball must be stationary when the kick is taken and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player.

Okay so I hear and take on board, the quote(s) above

But this is my point, There MUST be a difference between denying a GOAL SCORING OPPORTUNITY  and  DENYING A GOAL

and for DENYING A GOAL by USING THE HAND(S) THE PUNISHMENT MUST BE A SENDING OFF, AND A GOAL CREDITED TO THE TEAM DENIED THAT GOAL.

Thierry henry's incident has set many precedents indeed, as for the case of VIDEO REFERENCE within the attacking third (which would have helped CONCACAF's representative, Mexico's case against Argentina) , to complement GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY which would have made England's case against Germany...

SUAREZ SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT OFF FORTHE HAND BALL OFFENCE, AND A GOAL SHOULD HAVE BEEN CREDITED TO GHANA...

F.I.F.A.  has to stop FOOLING . INTERNATIONAL . FOOTBALL . AUDIENCES .

Look at it from several angles. Like i said before fifa created the rules and they still cyah get it right and are haunted by the effects of many ills of this world cup. federations need to make hash changes for the respect of the sport. handling the ball should be a reward just before it crosses the goal line and it should be a major punishment for the defending team.

People forgetting Ghana had two chances to win the game. When Gyan had the penalty at the end and also when they had to do the penalty shoot out. In my mind Gyan redeemed himself and did his part by scoring the first one it is his teammates who let him and their side down by missing. So people who want tuh pinnin this on Gyan or Suarez missing the big picture!

For me the difference is the travesty of the non-call on Henry, and that he and France weren't properly punished according to the laws of the game. It was a hit Suarez took that paid off for the team as a whole.

That said, this game hit me personally like last cup Germany going out to Italy in final minutes out of 120.
It was just a last second heart breaker.

I've only seen the thing twice so far at real speed, the 1st time on a small internet feed. Did Suarez have any chance of chesting it out?

Emotions running high on this thread for real.

I didn't think I had an emotional attachment to any team. I was hoping Ghana do something, but not really studying it. I was more on hate this rounds, all the teams I hate get knock out so I good. Then came this game. Wow. I have to say, Today was the reason why football is the world's sport. There was everything today and for that i give a big  :applause:

Sometimes (most times?) though, yuh team doh win, whether is a blown call or a missed chance. That is life. Calling for a rule change on the handball is just emotions.Gyan feel the weight of a continent on his shoulders and come up 6 inches high.  If he had scored, then there would be no uproar. If Essien had been healthy, maybe he takes it and scores. Maybe he plays and Ghana never makes it out of the group stage. Who knows.

What I do know is that we saw to good teams battle in a great contest with great goals and great drama. Circumstances force Muntari out the dog house and he deliver in a big game. Forlan respond with a lightning bolt of his own (that free kick getting lost in the shuffle here, but it was stupendous - what they advertised the Jabulani ball would do) then the extra time, the ebb and flow, the all out assault on goal in minute 120. The handball, the penalty, the bar, the emotions the drama, the tears and the joy.

And we still have 6 more games to go! (that 3rd/4th place game is a fete match though)

Ghana, Hold your heads high and walk tall.

Steups

PLZ EH!!!!

I'm in two minds about the handball. I doh know if is because it wasn't T&T or Brazil or Lyon that go out because of it or what, but I'm not so cut up about it.

Truth is, once there are rules, there are people who will break them.

Think about it. In basketball, they decided that if the ball came off your feet, it reset the shot clock. You will see some teams then intentionally kick the ball out to break up a play...

They invented the travelling rule, so some players started using the post up attack against the attacker by moving suddenly out of the way and having them falling.

It was in this same game of football that I saw Baggio purposely flick a ball up against an Austrian defenders hands to claim a last minute penalty. (That was the thing that set me against Italy for years btw). Who to blame? Baggio? The Ref?, The Rules? The Defender? I've heard every single version.

Suarez was (rightly) sent off for his action, and knew exactly what would happen when he did it. Is it any different from Avery John sliding in to break up a quick Swedish attack, (possibly) taking out the defender and getting sent off? I don't know...

I guess, like life, football isn't always cut and dry...

Harsh. Ghana sealed their own faiths today, they have only themselves to blame. Besides the penalty both sides had chances to take the game but it went begging. Today I thought Uruguay   diDnt play to their best but they got THE result.
I do feel this is Uruguay World Cup after what happened today.. simple events going unnoticed when they slipped in past Costa Rica... and what a story that would be...and by all means .. no one can say they cant go on to win this thing.

Exactly, he was penalized according to the rules of the game, then Gyan failed under the pressure of the situation.  Match over.

Rules is rules.  The man broke the rules and he and his team were punished according to the rules.  At the end of the day, any pressure Gyan put himself under to score that penalty is his own doing because the worst that could have happened was that his team end up 1-1.....It's not like he needed to score to equalize as that would have been real pressure. (that's the way he should have approached it....easier said than done, of course.)  I feel really, really sorry for him, though, and I could imagine the burden we will carry on his shoulder from here on in.  That being said, I expect to see this team in Brazil in four years.  Hopefully they will mature and develop and be better prepared to go further in the tournament.  For only their second appearance in the tournament, they are showing a better progression rate than their fellow African brothers.    Tough day to be a fan of Africa still.  :beermug:

I agree that is it the most dishonest thing to do in football. It is against the letter and spirit of the rules. I just saying given those choices I choose my team over the rules. Same way a defender will resort to fouling  his opponent if he the last man on a break away. The punishment needs to be stiffer which is why I support a change of the law- red card and goal allowed if defender is seen(with video replay) to prevented a goal illegally. I know that won't happen anytime soon but I think its the only way to prevent those things from happening.

Just to remind people on here, eh.  Avery John got ALL BALL and NONE of the player on that tackle that got him red-carded.  Was it a foul?  Yes. Should it have been viewed as a dangerous, studs-up tackle?  Yes.  Was it deserving of a red card?  NO! Was it deserving of a yellow card?  Mabe.   Also to make the comparison between him and Suarez is futile and damned near irresponsible.

I saw Terry trying to head a ball less than 6 inches off the ground. It went wide anyway but it shows he bravery and commitment. Last world Cup he also cleared one of the line with an bicycle kick against T&T.

As hard as it is fuh me to admit, I think this worst than even Maradona's "Hand of God"... only because as an attacker you're cheating yes... but yuh trying to be sly or subtle about it, yuh hoping not to get ketch.  Here man decide he go deliberately prevent the goal and take he penalty... you literally deciding that the more deserving team WILL NOT win the game.  That kinda cynical win at all costs ent fuh me.  Put in that position I don't think I could cheat blatant so.  But I willing to concede that it easy fuh me to say so.

Not sure how I feel about the proposed rule change... I don't like the automatic goal thing, that's what the penalty supposed to compensate for (what is the save rate... not somewhere in the 20s... meaning the conversion rate in the 70s?)

I would like to see the penalty be stiffer for deliberate cynical transgressions of the rules such as this though.  Maybe lose an extra player in addition to the carded player, and add a multi-game suspension on top of it.  Either way that shit Uruguay squad will be without their leading scorer against the Dutch.

That was a most painful loss for Ghana. To be denied a goal due to cheating is heartbreaking. I feel for them, they were my African team from the beginning. They'll be back stronger than ever. Having said that, I can understand the act of the Uruguayan player who handled the ball on the goal line. He literally "took one for the team". Knowing that he would be red carded, miss the next two games, and cause a penalty. He gave his team, and by extension his country, an ever-so-slight chance at salvaging something. It paid off in a big way for Uruguay, but my beloved Ghanian team was robbed in the worse way. Still, I felt like Gyan should have converted the penalty, but such is football.

Rajevac: I'm very proud

Milovan Rajevac has hailed his Ghana players after their dramatic defeat by Uruguay on penalties in their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ quarter-final.

With the scores at 1-1 in the last moments of extra time, Dominic Adiyiah's header was stopped on the goal-line by the hand of La Celeste forward Luiz Suarez, who was consequently sent off. However, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting spot-kick before the Black Stars lost 4-2 in the shoot-out.

"There are no words to express what we feel," said Rajevac. "But I congratulate Uruguay tonight - they were the lucky ones. All I can say is that this is football. At the end we had an historic opportunity to reach the semi-final - we had a penalty. Continue..http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=1266465/index.html#rajevac+im+very+proud

Denying a GOAL, is very difFerent from DENYING A GOAL SCORING OPPORTUNITY...

Ghana's case is clear here, but again, as the game evolves and The Laws stay the same, it affects the quality of the game.

2 wrongs don't make a right.

The punishment must fit the crime and Ghana should have had that goal allowed, and Suarez should have been sent off and made to miss 5 games for this wanton act of desperate stupidity, simply because of the fact that this is the Quarter finals of the highest level of the game's ultimate competition.

This is tournament football, not some league competition, where yuh could sleep it off, and face another squad in 6 days.

This decision has cost football dear, and the thing is, if Suarez really wanted to be a keeper, he could have spent his entire career in training to become one...

F.I.F.A. continues FOOLING  INTERNATIONAL  FOOTBALL AUDIENCES

It has to stop, or the game will surely suffer...

dinho you are wasting your finger energy. Anybody that play football at a competitive level would have done the same, given the circumstances. How many times have we seen this same action in the game. The fact remains players understand the consequences, accept it and take the chance that the penalty would be saved or missed. We have seen it in this WC and in 2002 Germany vs USA, the German player deliberately handled the ball to deny USA, the referee missed it and USA were sent packing. As I said nothing new.

fifa need to make the punishment not worth the crime. Certain transgressions in sport will always go on, but as was suggested by the former post I quoted, the rules need to evolve with the game.  The culture of diving is one of the things that needs to be targeted and maybe actions like what Suarez did yesterday.......maybe handling a ball from the goal line area to prevent a goal.....maybe they should award the goal.

Read that article from the Ghana coach, i not seeing him complaining about a grave injustice done to rob his team of victory... Similarly, no outcry from the Ghana players or fans to say they were cheated out of victory. Thats a normal play in football, you know you taking a red.

Now come to think of it if the ref missed it, that woulda been a whole other story, but I still say I can't compare that play to what Henry did. I see man now even looking to come say it worse than Maradona's hand of god. The key difference is that in an attacking mode, yuh outright cheating and conning the ref to premeditatively (sp) steal what is not yours, while from a defensive mode, you looking to cheat but to instinctively protect what you already have. I dunno how else to explain this but anyone familiar with the game should understand there is a clear distinction.

I think people getting carried away by emotion and the circumstances. The laws about handball are not new.

A penalty and a sending off is the accepted punishment and long time yuh wouldn't even get the sending off.

If Gyan score the penalty nobody is complaining about the rules.

If the incident was in the 10th minute and he miss Uruguay would still be penalized by having 10 men for 90 minutes Ghana probably wins and nobody cares.

You can't change the laws because of one specific circumstance where teams are tied in the last minute of a match because a player might miss an opportunity that is almost a guaranteed goal.

And yes it was cynical play. It hard to say what would happen if yuh playing in such a high stakes game.

It seems like people letting their emotions interfere with their ability to look at the situation for what it is. Ghana was not robbed-just because some people were and are emotionally invested in the team so now it means that Suarez should be hung and quarted? The ref applied the rule and the punishment. Like I posted before Ghana still had an opportunity to win when they went to penality kicks they failed to take the lifeline and Uruguay did. Winning is about overcoming adversity. Ghana did great to make it this far but they failed to do what they needed to do to win. I would be upset with the players who missed the damn penalties-Gyan made his!

I agree with you Dinho; even in the midst of my frustration yesterday, I never for one second faulted Suarez for what he did. What he did is of course illegal according to the rules of football, but given the match situation completely understandable.

This is the world cup we are talking about after all. As gigsy say, we should be more upset with the Ghanian players who did not score their penalties.
Buth then again, that's football.

so hold on lemme get this straight.. all ah allyuh men in Suarez situation with a whole world cup riding on allyuh back and last second of the game, and yuh telling me that allyuh would just watch the ball sail over yuh head in the name of morals?? lol

well all allyuh better than me yes. ah bet if Dennis Lawrence did it yuh woulda say he's a hero steups..

if de ball passing by my hand.. out of reflex I MIGHT.. I MIGHT chook my hand... but where dat ball was... I woulda be diving and straining all my neck muscles and head to reach it...

dat man really nasty to have the presence of mind to bat out de ball.. imo

and allyuh men does rail up about diving yes

Sense FF, Dinho, yuh surprise meh dey, ah eh guh lie, cheatin is cheatin, however yuh slice it and dice it.  FIFA needs to do someting about all dis nonsense, in dis day and age we should not be havin dese conversations bout illegaly denyin clear goal scorin opportunities etc.  But is FIFA, we grandchildren will be havin de same discussion in years to come

Fellahs, please show me where I said it was not cheating?

Cheating is part of the game unfortunately as it is a part of any game what allyuh think this is hopscotch? I feeling it more than most how Ghana lose that game, but there was a transgression, there was the punishment and then there was the result.

Allyuh acting like the ref miss it.

I totally agree- even though I was pulling for Ghana, the blame should truly be placed on everyone who couldn't step up and bring their best effort in a pressure situation (especially the one man who took his PK lackadaisically).

In retrospect, if you take your emotions out of the game and think about it- Suarez' handball was one of the smartest, most heads-up and ballsy plays I've ever seen in a football match, even though it was probably just a knee-jerk reaction to begin with. Like ah man said, if Lawrence or Edwards did the same thing to save we in a big game, men on this board would be naming their sons after him.

Remember- when teams are closely matched on the world football stage, more often than not the team with the best gamesmanship has an edge. Ask Italy's '06 team.

Luis Suarez - hero or villain?
By Paul Fletcher (BBC)

I am struggling to remember a more dramatic end to a World Cup match than Friday's classic quarter-final tie between Uruguay and Ghana at Soccer City.

Luis Suarez's goal-line handball from Dominic Adiyiah in the dying seconds of extra-time saved a certain goal but resulted in a red card for the Ajax striker and a penalty that was, literally, the last kick of the game before the shoot-out.

Asamoah Gyan, scorer of two spot-kicks already in South Africa, stood just one strike of the football from taking an African team to the last four of the World Cup for the first time.

He had an entire continent behind him, willing him to score, but heartbreakingly for the 24-year-old, his strike skimmed the crossbar and flew into the stand behind the goal.

Moments after his miss the camera cut to Suarez, who had left the field in a state of despondency but was now overcome by sheer, unadulterated fist-pumping joy.

His gamble had paid off in spectacular style.

Minutes later Gyan showed remarkable guts and resilience to score the first Ghanaian penalty of the shoot-out but Fernando Muslera subsequently saved from John Mensah and Adiyiah.

Sebastian Abreu then delivered a stunning coup de grace with an ice-cool looping penalty kick that took an age to reach the net. Stranded Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingson could only look on having already dived to his right.

Abreu, a journeyman of 17 clubs in seven countries, was mobbed by his jubilant team-mates but it was Suarez who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

Suarez explained afterwards that he knew he could not stop Adiyiah's effort with his head and so used his hand (http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-49856120100703). The huge grin on his face as he spoke to reporters indicated in the clearest terms possible that he had no regrets about what he had done.

But was it clear-cut, blatant out-right cheating or professionalism that ought to be applauded?

I heard several angry people describe it afterwards as the sort of despicable behaviour that needed to be stamped out.

"The referee should have awarded a goal," said understandably disappointed Ghana defender John Pantsil (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/03072010/2/tearful-ghana-rue-gasp-penalty-drama.html), although I personally don't see how Olegario Benquerenca could have given anything other than a penalty if the ball did not cross the line.

Panstil added: "There is no chance that any of us Ghana players would have used our hand to stop the ball - no way."

It is difficult not to have some sympathy for Pantsil and his team-mates. They had been the better side during extra-time and could not have come any closer to a dramatic winner.

The vast majority of the 84,017 inside Soccer City were behind them, while Milovan Rajevac's team had the support of the African continent in general.

"Go BaGhana" said Friday's headline in The Citizen newspaper, a neat play on Bafana Bafana, while The Times suggested "We Ghana win it".

At one point on Friday I even heard a chant of "Ghana, Ghana, Ghana" momentarily drown out the sound of the vuvuzela.

Ultimately Ghana's exploits in South Africa have ensured a measure of respectability for the continent after a disappointing group stage that saw the other five African teams fail to qualify.

They have a young side, with seven of the starting XI in Johannesburg 25 or under, and should have a bright future. Despite his agonising Friday, Gyan is a striker of real quality, while young holding midfielder Anthony Annan looks to be a player of immense promise.

The Black Stars became only the third African side after Cameroon and Senegal to reach the last eight and came within a whisker of a place in the last four - and did so without Michael Essien, their best player.

Uruguay were not so much trying to break new ground, as emulate past glories and the victory for Oscar Tabarez's team gave them their first semi-final place since 1970

The manner of La Celeste's progression might disgust some but that should not detract from their overall form in South Africa.

They have just conceded two goals in five games and for a country with a population of 3.5 million, reaching this stage of the competition is a stunning achievement.

I saw their opening game against France and must admit I wondered how they were going to enrich this tournament. They played three in the centre of defence, packed the midfield and lacked ambition.

I had underestimated them.

They had got the point they wanted against the group favourites and played a more expansive game against South Africa, winning 3-0, and have also gone on to defeat Mexico and South Korea.

Suarez and Forlan, who equalised against Ghana with a free-kick, have scored six goals at the World Cup.

They have perhaps been the most formidable strike partnership in the tournament and the absence of Ajax striker Suarez will be a major blow when they take on the Netherlands in Cape Town on Tuesday.

"It is a pity, he made a great save today," said a clearly delighted Forlan, who rated Friday as the greatest night of his career.

"Suarez is one of the heroes. He didn't score a goal but he saved one and now we are in the semi-final."

How Suarez's actions are interpreted is a matter of culture as well as perspective.

What might be regarded in Europe or Africa as cheating is seen as cunning or exploitation of the rules in other parts of the world.

It could be seen as a moral question or an issue of sportsmanship but, despite what Pantsil said, does anybody really think that professional players all over the world would not have done the same thing?

Suarez did what was required to keep his team in the contest - and there is no doubt that if Suarez had not handled the ball his team would now be reflecting on a defeat, not the high-point in Uruguayan football for 40 years.

"I thought we were out," said Forlan of the moment when Gyan prepared to take his penalty.

"I was convinced we were going home. When I saw the ball go into the stand it was unbelievable - Suarez saved us."

This world cup exposed FIFA for the slum lords that they are, and thanx to ppl like suarez, henry, the officiating and some unethical players, brought all this controversy to light about things that should've been addressed and dealt with yrs ago..

it shows that FIFA really needs tuh put their shoulder to the wheel and clean up the sport before true fans start getting turned off from the game. in other words, FIFA needs tuh get their act together, as in now!

Suarez only put up his hand after he notice the other defender slightly in front of him fail to get his head/body unto the ball.
I don't see it as win at all costs..more as defend at all costs..if this was earlier in the game I doubt he woulda done the same.
I ent see nothing wrong 'rulewise' in the whole situation..he get sentoff and Ghana get a penalty..all according to the rules.
if the referee had missed it then that woulda been a different case, which I kinda feel Suarez was hoping for snce he went to argue with the ref
Suarez should been a man and just headed off the field.

Ghana gone home..Holland go deal with Uruguay..then Spain go rest it on Holland..end of story

Just Cool yuh really sickening now..get the rock off yuh shoulder when it comes to Spanish people nah..geez

dinho you are wasting your finger energy.

Well apologies to all you professional and ex-professional footballers who dominate the forum... as ah man who only kick ball in the occasional weekend lime I could only speak for myself, I doh have to cheat like that to win.  But as I said, as a non-"competitive" footballer, I willing to concede that it easy fuh me to speak.

Ah waitin for fellas like small mag, dinho and all the other pragmatist when is TNT turn tuh take ah blow the likes of what ghana took today!! i saw ah man literally play goal keeper and stop ah ball from going in the net, and all i could hear is gyan fault and he forked up and saurez took one for the team!!

all the BS small mag talkin, i see he hero #14 blow two important penalties on two different occasions, and not one forkin word of contempt came out his mouth BUT HE HAVE THE WORLD TUH SAY ABOUT GYAN!!

no disrespect to stern, but if stern could only be half the player he/ gyan is we would be in business.

this saurez fella should be banned for ah whole yr from international football! this would send ah clear message to these spanish speakin dogs that ppl tired of the fackry.  these ppl really forkin up the game, and all allyuh could say is hard luck!!

i see in the spain protugal game where the man didn't even touch the spanish player and the man fall on the ground like somebody hit him wid ah hammer tuh head! all this is really bad for the game and ppl should show their displeasure.

for all who feel i was in ghana's corner hence the reason i fumin, quite wrong! i straight out don't support african sports men, BC they lack commitment. the teams i support in football are mainly european teams, france and england being two of them.

allyuh remember this, we have tuh compete wid central americans on the regular BC they are in our region, and allyuh dun know what they give. as selassie said in the league of nations when mussolini was attackin abyssinia and he went tuh dem for help and they blanked him , he said" TODAY FOR ME AND TOMMORROW FOR YOU!!!    ah waiting for something the like of that tuh happen to we. if allyuh thing what crouch did was awful, then allyuh eh see nutten yet, BC the best is yet to come!  ah go be here waitin for all the pragmatism!

PS:  ah have tuh big up toppa for have more balls than most ah allyuh apologist yellow belly sissies! ah rather have she as ah female in meh corner any day rather than some ah allyuh scared tuh speak the truth BC allyuh fraid tuh step on toes for fear of being seen as inapropriate!

when would we understand that these spanish ppl doh like we! even the ones that born in trini and look like spanish have the same stinkin vibe about them, and guess what? i doh give ah solitary f@ck about them and how they feel! who vex loss!

Forlan MVP of the Tourny. Fantastic team leader

Shotta,
             I agree.

Ghana miss the penalty. Yes the man hands the ball. Red card, 1 game suspension and penalty. What else all yuh want? a firing squad.

Deeks and sHOTTA, allyuh making to much sense wid allyuh simple argument, leh we continue dis and talk bout how Suarez is ah spanish speaking dog and should get ban for a year and he hates nig*%rs and all dat good stuff.

FIFA may extend Suarez match ban to the final

A handball in the box in the 121st minute of play prevented a definite goal for Ghana. A red card was shown. A top-scoring player was sent off with an automatic one-match suspension. A penalty was given to the opposing team which, if scored, would have given them victory and a spot in a World Cup semifinal.

Nine times out of 10, this scenario would have meant you'd be reading about Africa's first World Cup semifinal appearance this morning, including a passing mention of Luis Suarez's crazy, last ditch effort to save his team from certain death.

[Photos: See Uruguay's Luis Suarez in action]

Yet after Asamoah Gyan smacked the ball off the bar in the ensuing pen and Uruguay won on penalties, FIFA faced the prospect of a World Cup final featuring a player who is considered a hero by some, a criminal by others, for violating one of the elemental laws of the game in a long-shot effort to win. So now FIFA is considering extending the Suarez match-ban to include the final, should Uruguay reach it. However, FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola said on Saturday that as a matter of routine the disciplinary commission would review any offense that receives a straight red card to decide whether it merited a harsher punishment.

"As is the case for any red card, any automatic red card in any match, there's an automatic one match suspension," said [FIFA spokesperson Pekka] Odriozola.

"And also the disciplinary committee opens the case for any automatic red card in any match.

"Which means the disciplinary committee will be looking at the incident and take a decision. We don't have any timing on when they will meet to take that decision."

Although it smacks a bit of moving the goal-posts after the fact, you can see why FIFA would want to make an example of the Uruguayan striker. Although a subsequent rash of players volleyball-spiking the Jabulani to row Z in the last minute of extra time to prevent certain goals, all in an effort to recreate Suarez's "glory," would be pretty funny. And, nine times out of 10, fairly disastrous for them and their teams to say the least.

Even so, it might be best for FIFA to allow this freakshow result to stand and let Suarez serve his minimum ban. Even if Uruguay makes it to the final, the neutrals need a pantomime villain/hero badboy to cast their hope/aversions. Plus, if Suarez scores a World Cup winner, FIFA will have inadvertantly discovered the most powerful pub-debate fuel in the history of football.

Talked like ah true jack ass! avery tackled ah player wid the intention of getting the ball in ah moment of nervousness and passion, this suarez fella intentionally save the ball wid his hands BC he didn't want tuh lose tuh ah bunch of n!ggers!

yuh think dem fellas enjoy being beaten by ah bunch ah malatos and black( brazil) every time down in south america! like yuh forget them ppl is german nazi decendents, italians who supported mussolini, racist jews and castilians spaniards or what?

Hear what, like the jackass I am,  I'll respond to you.

I personally said that I didnt know as far as Avery goes...

You ever stopped to consider that simply put, maybe Suarez didn't want to lose, point blank.

Avery was already on a yellow. I don't think he would have stayed on that field regardless.

Ok. Avery got all ball. Then he got the player on the follow through. In the past that didn't used to be a foul. Ever since Fifa started cracking down on dangerous tackles, they have been calling those...check the files.

I could have used any one of a hundred examples of "taking one for the team".
I was just giving an example that's a lot closer to home.

Futile...is this discussion.
Irresponsible...is spewing racist "antiracism" like the kind thats stinking up this thread.

World Cup 2010: Fifa may extend Uruguay striker Luis Suarez's ban for handball against Ghana
Fifa have confirmed that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez could miss the rest of the World Cup following his hand-ball against Ghana.

Suarez was given a straight red card for saving a goalbound-header on the line in extra-time, Ghana missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay went through to the World Cup semi-final after winning a shoot-out.

The striker will serve an automatic one-match ban ruling him out of the semi-final with Holland but Fifa's disciplinary committee will look at the case to see whether he should also be suspended for Uruguay's last match of the tournament - which will be either the final or the third-place play-off.

Fifa spokesman Pekka Odriozola told a media briefing: ''For automatic red cards there is an automatic one-match suspension. The disciplinary committee also opens a case and they will be looking at that incident and taking a decision.'

Fifa's disciplinary code gives the committee the option of a longer ban for ''unsportsmanlike conduct''.
Suarez is being hailed as a hero in his home country but the incident has provoked condemnation in other parts of the world.

His action is also contrary to Fifa's fair play code which states: ''Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Cheating is easy, but brings no pleasure''.

Avery john  didn't get any of the player, jed.  That "follow through" that you talk about was insignificant and all ball.  But I agree it was dangerous play.  I didn't remember that he was already on a yellow, so, you're right, if he deserved to get a second yellow then he would have been off.  I also agree with your last comment.....only thing I was pointing out was that the example you used didn't fit in to the context of the original debate.  I woulda liked to have seen you use one of your other hundred examples because we don't need to be close to home just to get a point.  Avery John wasn't in the same position making that tackle  as was suarez handling that ball.  Two totally different circumstances, stakes and consequences. :beermug:

Last kick of the game, a chance to not lose the game and risk not playing in the next game is a big decision.

Suarez to me did whatever it took to stop that ball from crossing the line, it was his decision to sacrifice himself for the team knowing fully well that Ghana could score from the spot and win the game.

Gyan should be blamed for the defeat and not some handball. Gyan wanted to break the net, everyone knows he can score penalties as he showed in the shootout but he didn't keep his cool so he closed his eyes stuck the ball with all the power he had and forgot about precision or anticipation.

I feel no sympathy for Ghana, they could of and should of scored from open play, they dominated the game. The more the game went on the more it seemed Ghana would win but they didn't, football can be cruel like that jus ask USA against Ghana.

If anyone should be upset about cheating is USA and Italy with a total of 12 bad calls combined, including atleast three disallowed goals and penalties.

You have to take responsibilities for you own failures in life and stop blaming others for your undoing to understand how to not fail in the future. Let it go, Ghana had an equal chance to win this thing even in the shootout where they failed yet again.

The better team is in the semis, they played with spirit, passion and most of all belief that they could do it.
If Ghana was in the same position to stop a goal they probably do the same thing and turn goalie.

Btw Suarez is a National hero for this and not the other way around, the question i have is.. why not header the ball.. he was in a good position.. guess he didnt want to risk missing or tired..

Point is Gyan could of scored and  Suarez would of been a villian/forgotten(how many would of remembered this if gyan had scored?) that was dishonorable to his country instead of a national hero. Gyan make him a national hero by missing that spot kick. He had no control of the outcome after but Ghana did.

Also FIFA should not extend his ban... There is no rule stating that if you handle a ball stopping a sure goal is a two match or more suspension... Gosh Ghana dont be sore losers...

Alot of managers will admire what Suarez did for his team and will pay extra for a striker who can score but is still willing to scarific himself for his team! Watch his career and wages go thru the roof now!  ;)

Nothing wrong with what Suarez did- but the shot of him celebrating the pk save was kinda rough- like it or not, part of the game or not, the deliberate hand ball was unsportsmanlike.  Holding back on his celebration of the pk save woulda been a decent move on his part.

dinho you are wasting your finger energy.

Bro,
No need to apologize. As far as I concern is only a game. But if I was in Suarez position at that moment in time, there is a strong possibility  I would have done what he did.

I misspoke when I said that there was "nothing wrong" with what he did.  It was more a loose figure of speech.  Obviously there was something wrong with it and that's why he AND his team were punished.  He was expelled from the game, suspended from the next match, and Ghana was awarded a penalty.  Other than that, that's about all we could ask for.

He cheated and he was unsportsmanlike in his actions and he was punished for it- I'm at peace with that.

Ghana missing the penalty was just a piece of footballing injustice over which the infrastructure of the game has no control. That's life.  You can't award a goal if that ball doesn't cross the line because then you're entering a world where you're making a determination of what "would" have scored, and victims of other scenarios will jump in the argument which will open officiating up to too much subjectivity... Like ah say, that's life...as we say in Trini, hard luck...

The unsportsmanlike act of openly celebrating the penalty miss is the only part of it that I don't come to grips with.  It's the same with Henry when he cheated against Ireland- the celebration rubs it in...everyone makes mistakes and in the heat of the action even a decent person can commit an intentional wrong-doing but openly celebrating it shows a lack of remorse that's just not cool.

Is only because the number 4 Fucile, in front of Suarez was a shitty goalkeeper, that Suarez was forced to
make the save

All cheaters are born equal... but some cheaters are more equal than others...

Well I'm afraid to use the words ‘ Criminal Intent ‘ in a simple enough
discussion of a football game because of it's Buzz Phrase appeal but,
There are differing degrees of separation between: A player handling
a ball to gain a ½ step or a ½ second or any manner of an Unfair
Advantage on the field of play ; As opposed to, A player Deliberately
Handling a ball in the Goal Area in an attempt to negate an Inevitable
Goal. Intuitively, there's 180 ° of Intent between the two and Punitive
action for the latter should not be equated to Punitive action for the
former in the Name and Spirit of Fair Play. One is weighted heavier than
the other, NO ? ' Discretionary ' you say ! Well think about it for a while.
There needs to be no amending of the Rules and Bylaws of FIFA because
the Penalty for a Transgression of this Magnitude is already present within.
Any goalkeeper saving a looping shot pushes the ball outwards to prevent
the ball from crossing the plane. The URU player pushed the ball forward
away from the goal plane while falling backward into the goal. Now the only
device that can put to rest any doubts about a Goal is the High Speed
Camera that FIFA been known to mount atop the goal supports. Now Where's
the Footage/Handage ? Anybody see any yet ? This behavior does not promote
the essence/ideals of the beautiful game because what this does is,make a
mockery of the unwritten and highly accepted practice of honest sportsmen
kicking the ball into touch for teammates or opponents to receive help.
What we'll begin to see because of URU's behavior is comrades suspending the
unwritten code of conduct in the name of URGENCY to further their team/country.

WTF Allyuh ! Even De F**king MAFIA have Ah Code Ah Conduct.  Now tell meh !
