Youth football is the only semi-bright spot in the game in this country, both the boys and girls teams making the senior sides look like mooks

SKN U-17 football team off to Trinidad for FIFA Qualifiers second leg
sknvibes.com

THE St. Kitts and Nevis Under-17 football team winged out of the Federation yesterday (Aug. 16) for the second leg of the FIFA World Cup Championship Qualifiers in Trinidad.

According to head coach Al Edwards, it is the third FIFA World Cup Championship at this level and the first time his team has made it this far.

Edwards said the team has a good chance as any in qualifying for the next round.

Tomorrow (Aug. 18) they will be playing against Trinidad and Tobago at 11:00 a.m. This will be followed by a match against Bermuda on Friday, August 20 at 3:00 p.m. and another against Cuba on Sunday, August 22, also at 3:00 p.m.

Edwards said that since the team returned from the first leg in Antigua in which they were successful, the players have been undergoing some extensive training.

He said the young footballers were a part of a training day camp which began around 9:00 a.m. and ended at 8:00 p.m. at Warner Park and Basseterre High School grounds.

He also said that motivational speakers were brought in to speak to the young men and get them mentally prepared to match with their physical training.

Edwards said the team was also involved in a community outreach programme at the Children’s Home where they interacted with the children.

The team had left for the first round in Antigua on Monday, July 19 where they won two matches and drew one.

In the first match, the team drew 2-2 with Antigua and was told that they had to beat the other teams by a large margin in order to qualify.

The young ball weavers went on to play St. Maarten and Anguilla and they convincingly won both matches 7-1 and 12-nil respectively.

At a welcoming ceremony held in the VIP room at the RLB Airport, several officials, including Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Sports Lloyd Lazar and President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association Anthony Johnson, congratulated the team on its success.

Recently, the footballers were treated to a luncheon at the Football House by students of the Youth Empowerment through Skills (YES) Programme.

The team is scheduled to return to the Federation on Monday, August 23.

U-17S whip St Kitts in CFU opener.
ttffonline.com.

The opening Stage II matches of the CFU Men’s U-17 Qualifiers began with Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago’s completing convincing victories over  Bermuda and St. Kitts & Nevis respectively at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya on Wednesday morning.

Cuba kicked-off Stage II  with a 3-1 victory over Bermuda while hosts T&T toppled St Kitts/Nevis 8-0 in the second game of the double header.

Cuba dominated the first half with Daniel Saez opening their score sheet in the 18th minute while Cuban striker, Dairon Perez, scored a double in the 33rd and 44th minutes to wrap up the first-half. In the second half, the Bermuda team missed quite a few opportunities at goal, however, they did manage to capitalize on one, through Zeiko Lewis.

In the second match, T&T totally outplayed the St. Kitts and Nevis outfit  The first half was fairly even play with the locals scoring only once, early on, in the 8th minute through Kiel Pierre. St. Kitts & Nevis goalkeeper Micheal Perez was sent off in the 37th minute for dissent against the referee and his team did well to finish the first 45 minutes without giving up any further goals.

The home team maximized on its one player advantage . T&T’s Shackiel Henry proved to be too much for the St. Kitts & Nevis defence as he scored five of the eight in the 61st, 66th, 73rd, 84th and 91st minutes. Garvin Samaroo was the other scorer in the 50th minute and Glen Sutton got the other item in the 77th.

Matches will continue on Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd August at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, Trinidad at 3pm and 5pm. Tickets cost TT20.00 for adults and TT10.00 for kids under 10 years old. Match Report from person present

Ferrieira did not dress yesterday as he's carrying a little bit of a groin strain and he's more or less day to day decision, so we'll see if he's fit enough for Friday's game.

Team played very well and it was a nice confidence boost which will hopefully take them comfortably through the tournament. Cuba is a big team and has a fair bit of speed, which will provide a stronger challenge. However the Cuban defense is a bit soft and they are not a strong passing team.

Bermuda is also a fast team, but their conditioning is very poor and they rely mostly on #10 and #8...Like Cuba they do not keep possession for a long time and lack patience.

Trinidad on their showing in training and the game should dominate. Coach Cooper is back so we'll see if there are different tactics. The weakest part of the T&T game is the goal, the defense is strong (right back is the weaker side), midfield is strong and the best players in the centre with 5 players competing for 2 positions. At this time Murkette (#8 solid passer) and Jomal (#10 talented but overplays like yesterday) are the main picks. Up front they forwards had a good game, but they can be streaky and may be tough for them against a good defense, as #9 (Henry) is more of a reactive forward and Samaroo plays with his head down.

saw a lot of under 16 games in south last year and he played for Pres (also played a few chmapionship games as well), also henry played for benedicts...they were two of the better young players in south...from tallman list it looks like sutton might be playing for vessigny this year...saw neil benjamin play once and he looked real good but one game dont make a player....however, i real hesitant to rate up men since they playing mediocre competition but these fellahs look good.

ok some play by play

67' T&T's Dwight Quintero replaces Garvin Samaroo.

Not much action in front of goal as we approach the 57th minute. Both teams are trying hard to create openings as it appears that a lone goal could turn out to be the decider in this one.

The second half has kicked  off with T&T now kicking from south to north. T&T head coach Shawn Cooper, now back in charge of the team after an overseas commitment, will be looking to see his boys take charge of  the match from here on. Among those looking on from the stands include TTFF technical director Lincoln Phillips, former T&T U-17 head coach Anton Corneal and ex-Under 20 team manager Chris De Silva. They are all in the company of current U-17 team manager Christo Gouveia .

It's half time with both teams locked at 0-0.

43' Jomal Williams fires a right footer high over bar from 30 metres out.

Some solid defending by T&T is keeping the Cubans at bay.

27' T&T's Henry gets first good opening for the hosts but fires low effort from the edge of the box which is easily claimed by the Cuban goalie.

25' T&T's Tarik Nicholls shoots weak straight to the Cuban goalkeeper from right of box

23' Cuba's Dairon Perez fires wide of the near right post from just inside the box.

17' Cuba's Saez wins a free kick on the far left side but it causes no problems at the back for T&T and the ball is comfortably cleared.

Cuba are having more possession in around the T&T box. The home side has yet to settle down and cause any problems for the Cuban defense.

11' Cuba's Daniel Saez sees his header go just wide of the right post following a mix up by T&T goalkeeper Quesi Weston and defender Dario Holmes.

Under humid conditions after an mid afternoon shower in front of just around 200 fans, both teams have started cautiously  in this match. No openings for neither side after 8 minutes. Both teams have been joined on three points by St Kitts/Nevis which defeated Bermuda 3-2 in the opening game of today's double header.

Welcome to the Marvin Lee Stadium for coverage of today's CFU U-17 qualifying match between Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba. With both teams locked on three points after first day victories and with  only the group winner advancing to the Concacaf Final Round towards the 2011 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Mexico, this game promises to be an exciting one.

77' Cuba's Perez is cautioned and Henry gets a second chance at a free kick after hitting the initial take over bar.

75' T&T's Henry made good inroads into the Cuban box and laid off neatly for Quintero but he overpushes the ball and misses out on a shooting opportunity. That could turn out to be a crucial miss as both teams give it their all in the closing 15 minutes.

70' Cuba's Javier Domelcete replaces Dairon Perez

Final whistle. That's the end of the game. Both teams have battled to a 0-0 draw and have everything to play for in Sunday's final set of matches. T&T (4 points) meets Bermuda from 5pm and St Kitts/Nevis (3 points) will face Cuba (4 points) from 3pm. Goodnight from the Marvin Lee Stadium.

The fans are urging T&T forward but the Cubans are not backing down and are looking to capitalize on T&T's lack of numbers at the back.

87' T&T's Benjamin misses T&T's best opening of the match, picking up a pass unmarked on the right of the goal but after delaying, could only manage to hit his shot into the side netting.

T&T Guardian Reports.

This country’s Under-17 boys’ football team will go into their final match in the Caribbean Football Union Group E Qualifiers tomorrow needing a draw to reach the Concacaf Final Round series

They will face Bermuda at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Stadium, Macoya from 5 pm.

The Ross Russell-coached Under-17s were held to a 0-0 by Cuba in their second match at Macoya yesterday as both teams stayed on course to reach the next stage of qualifying for next year’s Fifa Under-17 World Cup Finals in Mexico.

With the point earned, both T&T and Cuba improved to four points, however, the young Soca Warriors head the table on superior goal-difference following their 8-0 win over St Kitts/Nevis on Wednesday at the same venue.

In yesterday’s first match, St Kitts/Nevis edged Bermuda 3-2 for its win to keep its hopes alive ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Cuba from 3pm.

At the end of tomorrow’s matches, the top two teams will qualify for the Concacaf Final Roound qualifiers.

Teams:

T&T: - 21.Quesi Weston, 2.Tarik Nicholls, 3.Nicholas Marcano, 4.Dario Holmes, 5.Damani Richards, 7.Neil Benjamin, 8.Karl Muckette (capt), 9.Shackiel Henry, 10.Jomal Williams, 11.Garvin Samaroo (Dwight Quintero 67th), 17.Kiel Pierre (Adan Noel 86th).

Trinidad and Tobago's Under-17 men's footballers need to win by as many goals as possible tomorrow against Bermuda to advance to the next round of qualifying for the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup after drawing goalless with Cuba last night at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

Both T&T and Cuba now lead the series on four points, however the junior Soca Warriors have a six-goal advantage following their opening 8-0 win over St Kitts-Nevis on Wednesday.

St-Kitts Nevis have three from two matches, and are still in with a chance should they upset the Cubans and T&T lose.

The series will end tomorrow at the Marvin Lee, with Cuba playing St Kitts/Nevis at 3 p.m. while two hours later, T&T meet the winless Bermudans who went down 3-1 to Cuba in their opening match. And with just one team advancing to the next round of qualifying, both Cuba and T&T first need a victory, and then to score as many goals as possible.

In the earlier match yesterday, St Kitts/Nevis bounced back from a 8-0 drubbing against T&T in their opening match to beat Bermuda 3-2.

Jair Minors gave Bermuda the lead in the second minute, before Tulmal Nesbitt pulled the scores level at 1-1 in the 20th. St Kitts/Nevis then completed the turnaround when Kyron Phillips converted a 45th minute penalty to see them leading 2-1 at the end of the first half, and Glenroy Samuel then scored in the 67th from long range to put St Kitts/Nevis further ahead.

However, Zeiko Lewis pulled Bermuda closer at 3-2 when he rounded the keeper and scored two minutes into added-on time.

The match between Wednesday's winners saw the Cubans pinning T&T back for the opening 10 minutes and they were almost gifted the lead following a mix-up between the Warriors keeper Quesi Weston and big Scarborough Secondary central defender Dario Holmes, which allowed lanky Cuba captain Daniel Saez a free header, which he turned wide.

T&T seemed to be overly dependent on captain and QRC playmaker Duane Muckette. And although the defence held solid, it took almost a half hour before T&T started to string a few passes together.

Even so, they hardly troubled Cuba keeper Sandy Mustelier, except for two weak shots from outside the box. Cuba too, hardly looked menacing but they were well-organised and so found it a little easier to get forward than than T&T.

The Cubans also started the second half aggressively. But even so, they defended in large numbers, offering little chance of the Warriors hitting on the break.

With just one qualifying spot up for grabs, the two top teams in the competition fought a protracted battle for the lead and the Cubans almost got the breakthrough when goalie Weston aggressively challenged Saez for a looping cross, then dropped the ball. A real moment of panic, but the Soca Warriors keeper sprung to life and quickly clutched the ball on the second attempt.

At the other end, Joe Public midfielder Dwight Quintero then seemed set to totally breach the Cuban defence in the 74th when running onto a pass from St Benedict's College striker Shackiel Henry, but a heavy final touch gave the ball to the Cuban keeper.

Captain Muckette then fed a wide pass to St Benedict's Neil Benjamin in the 87th, but with the crowd beckoning the player to shoot from a wide angle, he tried to dribble. No success.

We need to win and scoring a couple goals will help as it can be argued that Cuba will beat St. Kitts by a favorable margin. If we draw then Cuba will go through with 2-0-1 leaving us 1-0-2. If we win and Cuba win it will come down to goal difference with us being +5 (I think) so if we could get about 3-5 goals we will be safe.

he is to young i think..

i think he is 15 but allyuh watch some "selected" highlights including ah bunch of indoor small goal stuff and calling for him on de team...true the youth have some nice touches but dat don't mean he should be on the team....the one noticably thing i saw is the youth look real small, look like he in standard 5, i hope he is really 12 or 13 so his size would make sense.

But wait, wasn't he selected by John Branes to go to Sunderland.

Come on man, get real, out of the whole of Concacaf he was one of the 8 selected.

Matthew Woo Ling from Trinidad & Tobago; Vidal Gonzalez and Fernando Meneses from Panama; Jose Villavicencio, Bryan Landaverde and Alvaro Lizama from El Salvador; and Julio Oliva and German Mejia from Honduras were the eight most talented footballers selected by John Barnes from the Digicel Kick Start Clinics. These took place in four countries in the Caribbean and Central America during the month of July and August.

Commenting on his selection, John Barnes said: “This has been another fantastic year for the Digicel Kick Start Clinics and I’ve seen some great potential in this year’s crop of footballers. It was a tough decision to choose just eight from the 150 players which took part in the Digicel Kick Start Clinics to train at Sunderland. That said, I believe the footballers I have selected have the right amount of talent, desire and determination to have a good career in football if they continue to apply themselves. I would like to wish them the best of luck and I really hope that I come across them again in the not too distant future playing for a leading football club.”

He received a pass from 12-year-old Fatima College player Matthew Woo Ling, who is certainly a player for the future, before blasting powerfully past the Hawks custodian.

so de fellah is 12 so his size makes sense, as for him being selected doh mean he will pan out to be a great player, many others have gone on these training stints and never became anything...however as ah 12 yr old, he ahead of de curve for all 12 yr old players in tnt and most of concacaf, hopefully he makes the most out of it....but we too quick to anoint players

as for john barnes comments..u expect him to say matthew is ah shitsnake and have no talent...any coach always thinks the players he selected are the best in his opinion so doh jump on me because i not calling de fellah the enxt latas or yorke...to be honest MWL eh play any serious competitive ball and the sunderland opportunity will be a great chance for him to experience a professional environment.

Half time - T&T leads 2-0 and look set to claim the three points to top the group.

39' Goal for T&T  Williams clinically heads into the right near corner from a well floated in delivery from the left by Noel. 2-0 T&T

37' Bermuda's Albuoy has a snap shot from the edge of the box, good effort, well saved low down by T&T goalkeeper Weston.

33' T&T's Williams tries an ambitious overhead kick just atop the six yard box to an incoming left side cross, but the ball goes wide of the  left post.

29' T&T's Henry swings  a right footer well wide of the left far post from deep inside the penalty box.

The CFU has confirmed that the top two teams from this group will advance to the Concacaf final round of qualifying. This means that Cuba (5 points) from three matches and T&T (4 points) from two games will advance.

23' Goal for T&T. Williams is on spot to tap home a rebound after Noel's low shot is partially blocked by goalkeeper Dale Eve. Noel did the hard work, positioning himself  well inside the area before getting off the initial shot. 1-0 T&T.

21' T&T's Jomal Williams sees his header go just wide of the right post from an incoming right side cross.

19 ' T&T's Kiel Pierre misses a glorious chance to put his team ahead, running goalwards on the right, he shoots to the near post and the goalkeeper pushes out for a corner.

15' T&T's Xavier Rajpaul is cautioned for dangerous play.

13' T&T's Adan Noel tries his luck and goes close with a right footer from 20 metres out which goes out off the top of the net.

12' Bermudas Zeiko Lewis tries to connect to a through ball but T&T custodian Quesi Watson advances off his line to avert danger.

11' Jomal Williams brings some excitement to the crowd but his effort goes wide.

7' Bermuda's Jevon Swan is sent through on a clear path to goal but the linesman raises his flag for offside.

T&T are in all white strips attacking the goal from north to south and Bermuda in all red from south to north. After 5 minutes there have been no openings on goal for either team under humid conditions here.

Welcome to the Marvin Lee Stadium for today's CFU U-17 qualifying match between Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda.

Bermuda are trying desperately for an equalizer but are opening up at the back. Fortunately for them T&T cannot capitalize. Henry moves deep into the box, evading two challenges but over-pushes and the ball goes out for a goal kick on 60 minutes

56' Williams again misses a sitter. The number 10 somehow hits wide of the left post from point blank range. He's holding his head in disbelief

53' T&T's Richards drifts inside nicely from the right and puts a good ball into the area but Williams misses a wonderful opportunity to increase T&T's advantage, blasting way over bar from the six yard box.

51'  Bermuda's Juma Mouchette replaces Albouy

47' Bermuda's Lewis stuns the T&T backline with a shot that sneaks past goalie Weston from a right angle. It's now 2-1 .

46' T&T's Pierre has a terrible try at goal, on the run and with  clear sight of goal but fires high and wide.

LIVE UPDATES - T&T VS BERMUDA, CFU U-17 QUALIFIER       Print

Referee Wijngaarde blows the final whistle and T&T earns a hardfought 2-1 victory to finish top of the group with seven points. Both T&T and second place Cuba (5 points) will advance to the Concacaf Final round of qualifying towards the 2011 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Mexico.

90' Bermuda goes close but Weston scrambles a save and Zeiko Lewis is cautioned for a rash challenge on the T&T custodian on the follow up.

The fourth official puts up three minutes additional time. Anxious moments for both teams.

86' Bermuda almost snatch the equalizer out of nothing as Basden swings a right footer and the ball flashes inches wide of the far left post. T&T were sluggish at the back on this occasion.
We are approaching 85 minutes play and both teams, especially Bermuda are pressing for the goal. The good thing for T&T is that they are not sitting back and trying to maintain the lead but are also pressing forward looking for a third item.
.
83' T&T receives a scare as Bermuda's Zair Minors has a crack across the face of the goal and the ball takes a deflection and spins back towards the far corner, forcing Weston to make a late save.

76' T&T's Neil Benjamin replaces Nicholls

75' T&T's Dwight Quintero replaces Williams. The fans applaud and one can only guess why.

73; The fans are off their chairs in disbelief as T&T goes close on goal and you guessed it. Yes it's Williams again, cutting in nicely but fires his shot onto the crossbar from the centre of the box. This player could easily have had a beavertrick this evening

71' Bermuda 's Chikosi Basden replaces Lema

71' Williams again goes close but seems to have left home his scoring boots, hitting wide of the mark from a good position inside the box. T&T are pressing forward in numbers but their finishing has been disappointing.

Bermuda are trying desperately for an equalizer but are opening up at the back. Fortunately for them T&T cannot capitalize. Henry moves deep into the box, evading two challenges but over-pushes and the ball goes out for a goal kick on 60 minutes

teddy bear, yuh know I think you are right about the mentality thing coz in the past we suffered badly to beat the likes of Grenada,St.Kitts etc and then somebody much worse than us come and beat the same people with ease.We must change that frighten mentality, maybe we should borrow some ah that Jamaican arrogance.

Way before that. Without steady international games beforehand they dead in the water. Congrats to the coaching staff and team, but time to overs PFL and superleague competition. They should be facing teams at least as challenging as what they'll meet in the finals.

Up front they forwards had a good game, but they can be streaky and may be tough for them against a good defense, as #9 (Henry) is more of a reactive forward and Samaroo plays with his head down.

so what about noreiga ...was he on the bench ?? up to now we have not gotten the full team along with the player clubs !!!!

He had a back injury
