Title: Broadcasting an event online
Post by: dwolfman on January 11, 2011, 10:44:47 PM
I wonder if there are any techies on the board with some suggestions.

I have an event on Saturday that a handful of friends in "foreign" want to view. They are asking me if I can set up a laptop with a webcam and a portable broadband card and let them view the event via messenger. Is that the only option available to me? Can I hook a camcorder (which I own) to a laptop and stream it that way instead? Suggestions welcome.

Via messenger is not the best way, you should use Justin.tv or Ustream.  I like justin.tv because you can have the broadcast automatically recorded.  If your camcorder is a digital camcorder it can work and will be better quality than a webcam.  If not, you would need to buy something that allows a composite hook up to the laptop, probably a TV card, to stream from the camcorder.  The most important thing is to do a few test runs before the actual event to make sure it works.

Let me know if you need my help with anything, I've done this sort of thing before.
